Character Analysis Of The Hatchet
Character Analysis for Hatchet
Og once said, "Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough."
Thirteen–year–old Brian Robeson is on a plane to Canada to see his father because his parents are
divorced. When his pilot has a heart attack and dies, Brian does not know how to fly the plane, so he
crashes in a lake in the Canadian wilderness. With only a windbreaker and hatchet, Brian has to
fight to stay alive. Over the course of the next month, Brian is determined to survive alone in the
wilderness. He stays alive because he is courageous, stays positive, and is determined to live.
Brian stays alive because he stays positive and never gives up even when he's nervous and sad.
When Brian was sad, he thought of his teacher and how Mrs.Perpich always said to keep going and
stay positive. For example, He never gave up when he had spent weeks building his camp and a
tornado came and destroyed the entire house and all things in it, he had his fish spears, bow and
arrows, his bed which took hours to make and his walls were all lost. Also, when he drops the
hatchet in the lake trying to get the backpack out the plane he keeps trying to get it even when he
feels stupid for dropping it.
Besides being positive, Brian is determined to live and will do anything just to survive. For
example, at night he hears moving sand and walking near his camp, he wakes up in the morning and
goes outside to find tracks in the sand that lead to a mound, he digs down and fines which he
thought were snapping turtle eggs. He ate all the eggs raw even though they taste bad. Also, When
he is depressed he just tried to find something to do to get his mind off of it and it worked. When he
did not want to live anymore he found something to do like get more firewood or go hunting.
In the book, Brian's courageousness and smartness helped him to survive. An example of Brian
being courageous is when he was drinking water from the pond and a moose attacks him and broke
one of his ribs but does not run or panic he just waits till the moose lets him leave. Plus his
smartness helps him survive because he said, "if I get hurt I will not be able to hunt so I need a way
"to store food in case I can not get it. So using dead

Is The American Dream Still Alive Today?
America has long been known as "The Land of the Free", "Home of the Brave", and has established
that "All men are created equal."(US Declaration of Independence 1776) Although all of these
things are what made America a choice place to live; she has not been without her flaws. One of the
major flaws that stands in the path of the American dream today is the inequality of the sexes.
Women are treated so unjustly when it comes to economic and social equality, women are not given
the same opportunities as their male counterparts; but women should take a stand today to guarantee
equality in the future . The question that lingers in the hearts of all Americans is: is the American
dream still alive today? Or has it simply become too unobtainable that it has vanished from our
eyes? A seemingly simple question to answer, "What is the American dream exactly?" becomes
much more complex when we actually think about it. The American dream is completely different
for everyone, but a well–known dream is the "Bigger is better" mantra that many Americans tend to
want: bigger houses, bigger televisions, bigger cars, bigger handbags, and bigger savings accounts.
America has been the land of opportunity, and has stretched her arms out to all who likened to take a
trip across a sea or border. But early it was stated that the American dream is different for everyone,
so what possibly could be a dream other than working hard and getting rich? Well, what about this:
equality. Equality,

Are Humans Are Still Alive Today
As a famous evolutionary biologist Ernst Mayr once quoted "Evolution is as such is no longer a
theory for a modern author. It is as much a fact as that the earth revolves around the sun." Evolution
is the key to the human race's survival on the earth. The fact that humans have evolved so well has
made them able to become the top of the food chain, and to maintain this position must continue to
adapt and evolve better and faster than all other species. In opposition to some, most scientists
believe that evolution in humans is still happening today, and is a key element to why humans are
still alive today, without modern evolution humans might have died from malnutrition, disease, or
just been pushed down to the bottom of the food chain. Modern ... Show more content on

Martin Luther King Alive Today
In a popular tv show called, "The Boondocks", there was an episode where the main character, Huey
Freeman, speculated what would happen if Martin Luther King Jr. was alive today. In this alternate
universe, Dr. King entered a coma after his attempted assassination in 1968 and woke up thirty years
later in 2000. When he woke up, he is saddened that his dreams of peace and equality have not rung
true in the contemporary world. The 9/11 attacks, Iraq War and the current state of the African
American community caused King to become disillusioned with the world. Disappointed that the
sacrifices of the civil rights movement and his ideas of peace never impacted people, King dies
heartbroken. It is an interesting thought to speculate how historical ... Show more content on

Machiavelli was not concerned with whether a person was inherently good or bad, nor was he
concerned with whether the elites exploited the weak. He was only concerned with whether an
individual was competent or incompetent. A cruel dictator who kept his state in check would be look
upon more favorable than a weak, but good–mannered politician who is unable to secure any
influence. "Cesare Borgia was considered cruel; yet his cruelty restored Romagna, uniting it in
peace and loyalty. If this result is considered good, than he must be judged must kinder than the
Florentines..." (Machiavelli, p. 59) In Machiavelli's eyes, the end justifies the means which is the
central underlying message in his work, "The Prince." Machiavelli was one of the first to suggest the
realism of politics and that practical methods were superior to moral actions. At the time, many
people would look to religion and to the Church for guidance in state affairs. The Church's power
was great at the time because many European rulers were Catholic and would often seek to the
Church for guidance or mediation. In fact, Machiavelli disliked the immense power the Church had
and advocated for secularism in politics. Machiavelli believes that religion was holding people back
from effectively governing states and that they needed to use their own intuition instead of their own
religion and idealism. "I deem it best to stick to

Positives And Negatives Of Consumerism
Just what is consumerism, and is it beneficial or detrimental to our economy and society? Basically,
consumerism is the ideology that people must buy products and services in order to allow the
economy to function correctly, but is this line of thinking accurate? It is entirely possible that
consumerism is creating a downward slope, leading us into greed and selfishness; but it is also
argued that consumerism is merely a means to stimulate the economy and produce a better society
as a whole. There are flaws in the system of course: pollution, greed, wasted materials; but there are
also benefits to it, such as, the creation of new jobs, the growth of businesses, and even a show of
patriotism. In essence, consumerism is both a positive and a negative force in the modern world,
depending on how it is utilized and portrayed, for example: a person with a positive world value
would best consider balancing out their life so they are neither needlessly consuming nor being a

There is methods of taking it too far, such as wearing the same dress for an entire year (Holt 1–3),
but there is a way to use minimalism within reason to benefit both arguments. And while it is good
to care about the environment and not waste materials, people should not take it to extremes that
could be unhygienic or detrimental to their health. (Holt 1–3). A perfect example of a healthy
medium would be being considerate to the fact that consumers have the option to only buy
necessities and the occasional goods and/or services for entertainment or pleasure (Millburn and
Nicodemus). The idea of the healthy medium has long been since argued from even before the
1980's, when people considered the idea of "Whoever dies with the most toys wins," to today where
many are starting to think that we must "Make due with less" (Kennedy), but is either side fully

The Scarlet Letter: Themes Alive Today
Mike Esposito
Mrs. Forstrom
American Literature – 1
7 November 2012
The Themes Are Still Alive Today Ah The Scarlet Letter, whether we like it or not, it is now a book
we have all read and have most likely come to hate. Whether it be because of the old setting in the
Puritan Massachusetts Bay Colony in Boston that we cannot relate to or the old English language in
which it is written, Nathaniel Hawthorne just failed to create a novel that most teenagers of the early
twenty–first century can enjoy and appreciate. It must be pointed out that first, it's doubtful he cares,
and more importantly that this just simply should not be the case. We juniors should pay more
attention to the novel, especially with the thought that the messages ... Show more content on

One night his agony and remorse sleepwalks him to the scaffold that Hester was embarrassed on
years earlier, as Hawthorne words it, "he had been driven hither by the impulse of that Remorse
which dogged him everywhere" (144). This clearly portrays the message of hiding a sin can be too
much to handle and can destroy a person. Now that the theme of the different things sin can lead to
is discussed in The Scarlet Letter, let's relate it to our life. As the Christian religion will preach,
everyone in the entire world sins all the time. Whether the sins are small or really serious, they are a
part of our life all the time, and mostly those that are seriously poor decisions can have a great affect
on us. As is illustrated with Hester in the novel, those poor choices can be made up for and can give
us strength in our later life. For example, steroid use in baseball is a very popular issue. Ryan Braun,
outfielder in the MLB, was suspected to have used performance enhancing drugs after a failed urine
test. Clearly, taking steroids was a bad choice for him to make, and although it is not commonly
thought of as one, it is a sin. However, Braun came back the next season after the scandal and had a
career year. He recognized his mistake and came back stronger than ever, which is quite relatable to
Hester and how her sin made her bold. Also, on the other side, sins can lead people today into
having too much guilt to be able to handle, no matter how venial or

Martin Luther King Jr Were Alive Today
I initially think Dr. Martin Luther King would be speechless and overwhelmed with the change that
is manifested in our society. I know that he would be proud of the nation's first African American
president, President Barack Obama. He would find comfort to know that we have a diverse
Congress to oversee the laws that are set for our nation. If Dr. King were alive today, he would be a
witness to a new society that fulfills his dreams of unification. He would challenge our nation to
continue to overcome economic issues, financial burdens and global wars facing citizens today. He
would boldly invite us as a society to stand even taller and stronger as now a diverse nation. Dr.

Reflection Paper
I chose assessment #10: Authenticity Scale (Biswas–Diener, 2010, p. 122) for my assessment.
Between this current quarter and the last, I pushed myself beyond limits on another section of the
Appalachian Trail. On the morning of day number 3 out of 6, I snapped a selfie of myself as I
crested a ridge line on a bald (treeless ridge line with unlimited views). The photo was unique and
looked manipulated with a filter due to the glare from the sunrise burning through thin patches of
fog spilling over the ridge as if the mountain was an airfoil. That photo is now my Facebook profile
picture and titled, "Nothing artificial." I have always pushed myself to be true and authentic in all I
do. That does not mean being perfect, it means being honest with myself.
Unfortunately, this strength of authenticity (i.e., the VIA strength of honesty is further defined as
being authentic with integrity) facilitates a mindset that does not tolerate others who are not. One of
my other strengths (as tested in a spiritual gifts test) is discernment. I can usually tell when someone
is not being authentic. I strive to be authentic and I expect the same from others if they want me to
trust them.
The news is full of stories of a lack thereof in this strength of being authentic. Yesterday, Matt Lauer
was fired from NBC for misconduct outside the scope of this discussion. He most likely had been
posing for years. Posing is to affect an attitude or character to deceive or impress. My

Gender Inequality In The Media
Anderson Cooper. Don Lemon. Jake Tapper. Matt Lauer. These faces flash across our television
screens, constantly crop up in our daily conversations, and dominate the news and media. But wait,
there's something missing from the list of names above– a group constituting nearly 51% of our
population– women("Women's Health USA 2012."). Scarce are mentions of successful female
journalists. Scarce are women confidently voicing their political opinions on reputable news
channels. Scarce are truly powerful female journalists. In reality, this problem goes unnoticed by
most– in fact, despite being a news and politics aficionado, it didn't hit me until recently that women
were so blatantly marginalized in this industry. It is perfectly valid to question the relevancy of such
an obscure issue, but obscurity does not equate to unimportance. Portraying women unequally in the
media defies not only our principles, but also the nation's principles. How can we claim that we are
a nation of equal opportunity if we don't practice what we preach? We must encourage women to
increase their political awareness and take on leadership roles in the media, especially in covering
the most vital topics, because the underrepresentation of women in media encourages disparity
between the sexes.
The problem of gender inequality in media has two main aspects– the shunning of women into petty,
less important aspects of news and a clear lack of women in leadership in media. According to a
report on the

Racism : Still Alive Today
Racism: Still Alive Today If one were to drive down any random road in South Carolina today, they
might spot a Confederate Flag hanging proudly from a building or a house or even a national
monument. The ones who support the display of this flag say that it is more to do with cultural
history than racism, however, the history that this flag represents is what motivated Dylann Roof to
kill nine innocent people in a South Carolina church in 2015. In this day and age, how did
something like the Charleston church shooting massacre occur? This essay will explain how racism,
although not as common as it was in the past, still exists today and how this racism is connected to
the story of Dylann Roof. Although certain racist laws, such as Jim ... Show more content on

James Ballinger, Roof had mental illnesses such as Schizoid Personality disorder, social anxiety
disorder, Mixed Substance Abuse disorder, and depression. Roof did not know how to interact with
people in person so he "developed violent racist ideologies simply by reading white supremacist
websites rather than through real–life interactions"(Post and Courier). Since he did not address his
problems, he dealt with his mental illnesses by using white supremacy as a solution. He became
infatuated with the thought that African Americans were inferior to whites and he wanted to start a
race war with them. He found racist communities online and felt a sense of belonging with people of
his skin color.
To deal with his own mental illness, he developed a warped sociological imagination that if whites
and blacks were pinned against one another, all of the world's problems would be solved. The
Defense council for Dylann Roof stated that Roof was so lonely and depressed that he once "posted
a Craigslist Ad for someone to accompany him to take a historical tour around Charleston"(Post and
Courier). A child psychologist testified that he saw the ad and, when he had messaged Roof to get
help Roof replied saying "I am in bed, so depressed I cannot get out of bed. My life is wasted. I have
no friends even though I am cool. I am going back to sleep"(Post and Courier). However, in court

The Role Of Luck In Maus II
Luck seems to regularly influence many parts of people's lives. However, without making smart
choices at the right time, luck does not happen merely by chance. Throughout the whole story of
Maus II, the role of resourcefulness in survival is conferred repeatedly. When the author's father,
Vladek, was in Auschwitz, there were several moments where he was about to be killed. In such
circumstances, resourcefulness played much larger role than luck, and it helped him to stay alive.
Specifically, Vladek's ability to save items for the future, to find work and to trade kept him alive
throughout the Holocaust. Therefore, people who survived were mostly the resourceful ones, not the
ones who were randomly chosen or had the most luck.
Although luck does play a role in the novel, the major factor that kept Vladek alive was his
resourcefulness. Particularly, his ability to save items for the future really helped him to stay alive
during the Holocaust. When Vladek was on a crowded train, Vladek used the saved thin blanket they
had given him, and "climbed to somebody's shoulder and hooked it strong" above the other
passengers in the train. This helped Vladek to "rest and breathe a little," because he did not need to
fight for space to stand on the ground anymore (85). Moreover, the blanket allowed him to reach
snow off of the train's roof. The snow kept him hydrated, and he was able to trade it with other
captives for sugar. In addition to the blanket acting as a spatial retreat, it

Who Is Mama's Still Alive Today
The Stranger by Albert Camus was written in 1942. The main character Meursault is indifferent and
absurd, and chooses to live day by day. In this novel, Meursault commits a murder by killing an
Arab and did not have any further investigation on the crime. However, Kamel Daoud an Algerian
writer decided to write a response to Camus' book called The Meursault Investigation. This novel is
about the victim's brother that was killed in The Stranger by Meursault. Haroun tells his own version
of the story from an Arab's point of view by giving an homage to his brother Moussa. Dead man's

regime. The author also demonstrates his commitment and his affection ... Show more content on

It is also our sense of injustice, our vision of injustice, that it is good to change. Sometimes when
something unfair happens, there are two ways to look at it, the concept of injustice implies various
perspectives, such as the feeling of revolt or to adapt to society norms as with people thinking would
be acceptable. In fact, in The Stranger, the murder of the Arab on the beach didn't shock the
population although it caught the eye of Kamel Daoud. However, the revolt can turn into revenge, as
in the Meursault Investigation, the act of vengeance that he committed twenty years later, in the
early days of independence in 1962, he considers it afterwards as a necessary catharsis not so much
for himself but for his mother. Haroun says that for everyone, his brother has always been "Arab",
and nothing else. An isnnocent, a victim, killed on a beach. " The other dead man, the murder
victim, was my brother. There's nothing left of him. There's only me, left to speak in his place,
sitting in this bar, waiting for condolences no one's ever going to offer." ( Daoud, 1) He thinks about
his childhood, about his mother thirsty for revenge whom always has and treated him as a less than
nothing. Meursault was unfair towards his brother and Haroun was unfair to Joseph. To Haroun it
was unjustifiable murder because it was against a random French

The Censorship Of Singapore ( Mda )
The practise of censorship – the restriction of ideas, action or image through the control of the media
or any other medium of expression. Censorship should be practised sensibly so that it will not
restrict the development and expression of new ideas while ensuring that social and political
harmony is assured. Censorship plays a vital role in maintaining the morals of its society and
creating an economically dynamic, socially cohesive and culturally vibrant nation. (N.A, N.D) The
press exert a significant influence on the public and is partly responsible for the views and values
that many hold. Hence, it should be responsible with what it put forth to the public. Singapore has
gradually moved from film censorship to film classification and now to the focus on media literacy.
Media Authority of Singapore (MDA) plays a significant role in regulating and conducting matters
pertaining to the media. It is guided by legislation/acts such as Media Development Authority of
Singapore Act, code of practice and guideline to comply and enforce the entities. In this term paper,
we will discuss how the media handle censorship and classification related matters as well as
reviewing the Films Appeal Committee under the films act policy. In this regard, recommendations
will also be given on how to improve the clause.
The media environment has undergone major changes, driven largely by the forces of technology,
media convergence and globalisation. (Media Development Authority, 2014) As

To Build A Fire Essay
'To Build a Fire';
In Jack London's, 'To Build a Fire';, it is obvious to see that as the story progresses, the man
becomes more bestial. However at the same time the dog seems to gain the human quality of good
sense. This quality of good sense, which the dog acquires, allows it to away from the same fate of
the man. There are many examples of how this is portrayed as the story makes headway.
The first example of how the man becomes more bestial occurs after his first fire fails. After his fire
fails, his hands are too cold to allow him to pick up matches. He was trying everything in order to
warm up his hands, but nothing was working. Then he came up with a crazy and savage ... Show

These characteristics such as sense allow the dog to steer clear of the man's fate. 'But the dog knew;
all its ancestry knew, and it had inherited the knowledge. And it knew that it was not good to walk
abroad in such fearful cold...'; The dog knew that they should not be out in the extreme cold.
However, the man did not listen to anybody and insisted on proceeding in the brutal cold, which led
to his death. Nevertheless, the dog used his sense and was able to stay alive. Once its master was
dead, it knew it had to get to shelter. Thus, it immediately headed for the cabin.
Another example of the dog's turn to human characteristics comes when the man has the crazy idea
of killing the dog in order to keep his hands warm. When the man called the dog, it knew something
was wrong. The story read, 'Something was the matter, and its suspicious nature sensed danger. It
knew not what danger, but some where, somehow, in its brain arose an apprehension of the man...';
This is another example in which the dog uses its uncanny senses to avoid the fate of the man. It
seems as if the dog now has more human characteristics then the man had.
As you can see in Jack London's story, 'To Build a Fire';, as the story progresses the man's human
characteristics diminish and he seems to become more bestial.

Women as News Anchors Essay
Women As News Anchors
Women in all careers are striving to gain equality in the work force today, and female television
news anchors are definitely part of the fight. The road to television news anchoring is a rocky one,
where only a few women survive and many fail. Where progress was once thought to have been
made, there aren't many females getting ahead in the world of television news. Today, there is a very
slow, if any, gain in the numbers of women who succeed. There are many questions surrounding the
subject of women in television news, and I will attempt to answer relevant ones in this paper. How
have the women that actually make it to the top and succeed as anchorwomen, done it?
What does it take to make it? Why do those ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was relevant to my paper in answering the question of why there are certain expectations of
women in television news. The textbook, Gender, Race and Class in Media had a few chapters
relevant to my paper. Larry Gross wrote a chapter titled, "Out of the
Mainstream: Sexual Minorities and Mass Media." He discussed various stereotypes in our society
that lead to stereotypes in all areas of our lives. I found some of my sources from Oasis, and also
used a couple of magazine articles that were relevant to the subject. I focused on the questions that I
wanted to answer and drew points from the material that were relevant and provided substantial
evidence to answer my questions. I found that opinions and thoughts of women who had been
through the business were most helpful. There was one big limitation I faced if I wanted to prove
that women in television news were discriminated upon based on sex and age. Women have been
fired from their anchor positions, and it has seemed that the reasons were because of looks or aging.
But this is hard to prove. In August, Carol
Schrader, a woman anchor from KETV–TV in Omaha, Nebraska was asked to leave.

The Play Developed By The Molasses Flood
The indie game scene has blossomed in recent years as the home console market has welcomed
small developers with open arms to self–publish their titles and reach a gaming audience and
community once inaccessible to them. Indie games and their developers often take risks with game
design, and express their ideas in fresh and creative ways. The Flame in the Flood, an indie title
developed by The Molasses Flood, is one of these titles as it places the player in the role of a young
woman who is accompanied by her dog as they travel down a treacherous river and scavenge for
food and other resources.
The world in which the game takes place has become flooded, and the player must navigate their
way down river to find shelter, resources, and valuables to stay alive. One could interpret the flame
in the title as a symbol of desire and willpower, meanwhile the flood is the constant struggle and
battle that one must face. The Flame in the Flood will not appeal to everyone as the game's
atmosphere and setting is of the gloomy and isolated variety, but those interested in the survival
genre will find a challenging game that has charm buried underneath its tough exterior.
If you are in need of a lengthy tutorial or gradual means of progress, you won't find that in The
Flame in the Flood. The game starts off by placing you in a dire situation as you scavenge for
resources in the opening area, and are then immediately pushed on your makeshift boat so that you
move towards other areas to

Why Socrates Were Alive Today?
If Socrates were alive today, how must he feel about the Delphic inscription of "Know thyself"
would still be a relevant question in which our society is still trying to answer in 21st Century
living? In today's fast paced society, the individual can easily get dehumanized by their work,
technology, family commitments and the political process. A person is easily swayed by public
opinion and not be able to think for themselves in fear of retribution and conflict. Sometimes it is
easier to go with the mass than being the obstacle in the river that moves the water move in a
different direction. If one seeks to attain self–knowledge before commenting on other matters I
believe that our society today would be a more compromising and better place. Socrates wrote
nothing of his thoughts down and we rely mainly on Plato's interpretation and recollection of the
man and his teachings. Although Socrates did not see himself as a teacher and that he does not feel
that he had wisdom as bestowed upon him by the oracles (Ahbel–Rappe 6). Socrates felt that he was
not worthy of seeing himself as being wise, but what he did accomplish was that he allowed others
to begin questioning their very essence and existence. In modern society with all of the technology,
the conveniences we often find that our true inner self is blurred or cut off from actual reflection and
introspection. In fact, for one to find out who they are there must be an acceptance that there will be

Why Is Edgar Allan Poe Still Alive Today
Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer and poet born in 1809 and passing away in 1849. During
that time Poe lived a very sad and troubled life. Poe often wrote about the struggles he has gone
through and the intense emotions he experienced on a regular basis. Some of these things include
poverty, death, loneliness, heartbreak, and many other horrible things. If Edgar Allan Poe was still
alive today, he would continue to write about his experiences, as well as incorporate the struggles of
communities that surround him.
Edgar Allan Poe has always been known for his depressing and sad writings. I have no doubt that
these feelings would follow him into the present day. Poe didn't have a good family life growing up.
His parents were both absent in his childhood, and he was separated from his brother and sister to go
off and live with John and Frances Valentine Allan. Poe was always a very talented poet growing up,
but his literary passions were not supported by the household he lived in. Being suppressed as a
child probably didn't help his mental health nor did it help to cope with day–to–day life. As a young
adult, Poe went to the University of Virginia but he could not afford to pay the ... Show more

After getting back on his feet, Poe served in the U.S. Army for two years. Upon his return, he was
addressed with the news that Frances Allan, his legal guardian as a child, had passed away. I
mention these events in Poe's life because they are big factors in the reasons why he wrote the things
he wrote. All of the emotions he felt from these experiences were put into his writings. Since these
horrific things were so prevalent in his life, I have reason to believe he would continue to write
about sings such as death and misfortune. I could go on about his life and give more examples, but
with the information above, it is pretty clear the type of life Poe

Is Chivalry Alive Today Essay
Chivalry is the type of thing that would be great to have in our society but I don't believe that it
exists too much anymore in the world today. Let me break down here some of the chivalry rules
compared with the actions of the people of the current world.
One rule of chivalry is that you have to honor and respect women. Back in the days of King Arthur
this was carried out greatly but if you look at the lack of respect given to women today you see that
this rule of chivalry no longer exists. Women's right have made great strides in the past few decades
but women are just not given the respect that they deserve. Women were put in high regards back in
King Arthur's day. Now they are not as respected as they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It is seen as very honorable to give someone who asks mercy but I don't see too much honor shown
in our world today.
Another rule of chivalry is to never do battle to obtain goods. Well this is the rule that is the most
broken in our world in my opinion. I always see on the news have robberies are made and how
things are stolen. Sometimes people get hurt in the process of this and that is just not right. I wish
that the convicts of the world would take a lesson in what is right from the Knights of the Round
Table.
Now a very debatable rule of chivalry is do not do battle without cause. Now what can be justified
as proper cause. When you look at the wars that are going on today some can be justified as having
proper cause. If a country is going to cause unworthy harm to many innocent victims it is alright to
go in and send them a message. If a country is breaking a few trade sanctions or something of that
nature then another punishment can be handed down, but not necessarily war. Now when you look
at gang wars those probobly have a hidden cause that none of us see, but still that doesn't make it
right. I am sure that when the knights fought they thought that they had cause but even if they didn't
at least they thought they did. That is better than just fighting for material possessions.

Argumentative Essay: Let Brown Still Be Alive Today
In America, many people are starting to come together and bring attention to the demand that police
officer should wear body–mounted cameras these days. Police work has never been easy especially
in a society that has negative attitudes towards police officers today, and their every move examined.
One question that needs answering is that if police officer Darren Wilson, who shot Michael Brown
had been wearing a body mounted camera, would Brown still be alive today. Michael Brown, an
unarmed black teenager, was shot and killed on Aug. 9, 2014, by Darren Wilson, a police officer, in
Ferguson, Missouri. After Wilson made contact with Brown and told the 18–year–old to not walk in

Is Feminism Still Alive Today?
Reinhart 1
Brooke Reinhart
Alyson Dickerman
English 101–17–14
12 December 2014 As much as we may have progressed as a country and as a global culture, sexism
is still alive today. It affects men, women, people who don't fit our gender binary system, how we
view ourselves and how we view each other. A powerful force in combating the gender inequalities
we face today is feminism. Feminism is a social movement for gender and sex equality, and a
personal commitment to understanding and achieving gender equality in everyday life. As children
grow up, gender roles try to put girls in their place from the beginning. Right off the bat girls are
presented with baby dolls and toy kitchens that teach them that their place is to be the ... Show more

When people see a little girl the number one comment is "She's so cute!" or "You look so pretty". By
Reinhart 2 focusing on how pretty the little girls look, we teach them that that's what matters most
instead of who they are as a person. As feminists we don't encourage girls to be pretty, we encourage
them to be pretty brilliant. ("Inspire Her Mind" Youtube.) Lack of representation is an enormous
issue for girls currently. When young girls look at the list of presidents in the US, they don't see
anybody who looks like them. Women only have ¼ of stem jobs, own 7% of tv stations, and have
5% of executive positions in the media. (Diana Mitsu Klos "Status of Women in U.S. Media 2013"),
(Heather R. Human "Stem Fields and the Gender Gap: Where are the women?"). People will argue
that this is because women just have different interests and don't want to pursue those things. That
may be part of the problem, but a larger issue is that as a kid boys are pushed harder to get into
science and take on leadership roles because it's expected of them. For me it has always been the
case in school projects where if a boy took charge and led the group then he was proactive and a
leader, but if I did it I was "bossy", and that is still true today in college. It's not expected of young
girls to take charge or excel in science or government, and as a result they don't pursue those things
because it's not

Is The Death Penalty Still Alive Today?
Is the death penalty still alive today? Unfortunately, yes, the death penalty has been used as a
"punishment" in the U.S. since 1608. The death penalty is an option considered in all homicide cases
and is the most gruesome penalty available in the United States. The penalty is immensely costly, in
accurate, and causes long term family damage, therefore it should be abolished in all countries
starting with the U.S.
The death penalty is very costly in more ways than ever thought. One of the more obvious ways the
death penalty is costs so much is paying for the prisoner. They are fed three times a day which costs
money, as does the water used for them to bathe and brush their teeth. For one year to be properly
housed it costs the county anywhere from 20,000 to 40,000 dollars, an average of 30,000 dollars a
year (Hirby, 2015). If the inmate is waiting anywhere from 10–15 years, according to Madelyn
Farfan a Torrington Police Department Detective who has been in service for thirteen years, to be
officially put on death row that's anywhere from 300,000– 450,000 dollars while waiting for a final
verdict. These expenses are outrageous. The inmate is waiting this extensive amount of time when
they could have already served a full sentence of someone who previously had a clean record before
committing a murder. It is insane that all this money is being used towards a killer and will just keep
multiplying as long as the evidence against or for the defendant keeps accumulating. The

Mccarthyism : Alive Yesterday, Today, And Tomorrow
McCarthyism: Alive Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow "Want of foresight, unwillingness to act when
action would be simple and effective, lack of clear thinking, confusion of counsel until the
emergency comes, until self–preservation strikes its jarring gong – these are the features which
constitute the endless repetition of history."
Winston Churchill
Winston Churchill was correct to state that history does in fact repeat itself, and when one looks at
the past one can see that McCarthyism, the execution of making unethical claims or accusations to
restrict known differences, is a recurring theme throughout human history. Proof is shown in the
events of the McCarthy era (the intensified fear of Communists from the late 1940s and early 1950s
also recognized as the Red Scare) the burning of Jews during the Black Death, the events of the
Salem Witch Trials, and other episodes of mass hysteria. The spirit of McCarthyism continues to
plague mankind and is kept burning by people who possess post 9/11 fears about Islamist terrorists
(citation).
Characterized by widespread anxiety and panic, incoherent beliefs and/or behavior, or unexplainable
symptoms of illness, mass hysteria (a factor of McCarthyism where a varied population experience
similar frantic symptoms – either from a "phantom illness" or a specific event) has appeared a series
of times within mankind 's past and has two significant elements: Collective Delusion (CD) and

and these books have been looked upon fondly by feminists. Precarious Life was written in 2005.

We center on the first world perspective. Feelings of invulnerability lead to fantasy of omnipotence
(9). Conflation of exploration and exoneration leads to the conception of responsibility. This
includes isolating the event and conceptualizing rationality. Responsibility is the juncture of being
acted on and acting. This causes the "response." There is some basis of political community.
Violence and vulnerability can be led to the exploitation of the ties we have with one another (27).
Butler wants to say that we are always vulnerable. Butler wants to complicate the picture of
autonomy. The narrative of autonomy leads to violence and stratification which in turn leads to
dehumanization and derealation. We need to become aware of this process to understand our
relationships. When we mention the narrative of autonomy we are speaking about the body. The
body is both a site of private and public spheres. Most people see the body as only being in the
private sphere but in reality, the body is constantly being regulated an example being like what
clothes are appropriate to wear to different occasions. Butler wants to relate this to the relationships
we have with legitimate power. Butler uses Focult's idea of sovereignty and governmentality.
Sovereignty is seen as "representative." It is an individualized, concentrated power that involves
decision–making. Governmentality on the other hand revolves around the process of law.

Why Do We Need Feminism To Be Alive Today
Do we need feminism to be alive today? If you're an intelligent human being, you may be
wondering why I'm asking you such a silly question, since the answer is obviously 'yes of course,
who would think otherwise?'
You'll be very surprised then to hear about a disturbingly large number of men who (even today)
would argue that a women's purpose is solely to serve the male population: a woman's place is in the
home they argue. They tell jokes about women with two black eyes, having to be told twice. Women
are still perceived as submissive and below men, which is still far from the gender equality that
some naïve people believe we have in today's world.
Do men and women get paid the same wages for doing the same jobs? No.
Are women's accusations against men in situations of sexual and domestic assault taken seriously?
No. There have been so many inaccurate and negative definitions of feminism which have been
drilled into people's minds, so let's start with the true definition of feminism, shall we? Feminism is
the radical notion that women are people and should be allowed the same rights, power and
opportunities as men and be treated with the same respect.
Nothing more, nothing less. If you agree with this statement, then congratulations! You're a
feminist! One of the most popular false beliefs about feminism is that it's a female–only movement
with the goal of female supremacy over the age old enemy, men. This commonly used
misconception is usually heard spewing out of

Is Ralph A Good Leader Essay
What makes up a leader? In the book Lord of the Flies, whose author is William Golding, this
question wasn't well thought through before a leader was chosen. Though the main characters are
only little kids, they had a challenging choice they had to make; they had not the slightest idea that
the choice that they would make might amount to some of them losing their lives. In the Lord of the
Flies, a group of boys from an all–boys school, crash–landed on an inhabited island. Upon arriving
on the island, they had to choose who would be chief. Mostly everybody chose the same kid as a
chief. Though, only a handful of boys, the choir boys were loyal to their choir leader, Jack, voted
him as chief. Yet the result was the same, Ralph was chief. The reason behind why the kids
nominated Ralph chief was because he looked more appealing than jack and he seemed to know
what to do. Like for instance, the kids were bewildered when they saw that Ralph had the conch in
his hands and that he was not the "man with a trumpet." Then they realized that Ralph was "the man
with the trumpet" and perceived that he would make a fine leader. I say overall: his honesty, his

was made up of those things. This idea is supported in the novel where it says, "They obeyed the
summons of the conch, partly because Ralph blew it, and he was big enough to be a link with the
adult world of authority," (Golding 59). The kids see Ralph as a natural leader. He keeps order and is

Racism Is Still Alive Today

Racism in Oklahoma Everyone is different. No matter what you look like, where you came from, or
how you grew up. Race does not define a person. Racism issues have appeared throughout many
different generations. In Oklahoma, there are factors of events proving that racism is still alive
today. Racism is any negative thought or action toward members of a racial minority or any
manifestation of racial inequality. There are different types of racism: Individual racism,
Institutional racism, and Cultural racism. This essay will analyze racism and certain component
parts: causes, effects, & prevention. There are various examples of causes coming from racism.
Fraternity members at the University of Oklahoma learned a racist chant which was caught on
camera and posted online. It was not something that was a part of the tradition. "Do I think these
young men are racist in their heart? Do I think they're proud of what they did? No." said Boren.

districts have experienced racist remarks and bullying. Kids are getting bullied for all types of
reasons and racism is one of them. People think that remarks about your cultural or ethnicity are not
a huge problem. Racist slurs can sometimes be taken lightly. Two stories were shared from students
who attended schools in the Oklahoma area. "Holemant said for 2 years she has tried

The Pros And Cons Of Sexual Harassment
Sexual harassment accusations regarding public figures has been one of the most popular news we
see on social media these days. "Sexual harassment becomes a crime only when there is a
nonconsensual touching or sexual contact that can be prosecuted." (Henning, 2017). Some of the
accused individuals are admitting their guilt in some of these situations, while many are denying
these allegations, particularly those that occurred decades ago. In many of the instances, money and
other valuable considerations are being used to get documents signed that swore the party marking
the claim to silence regarding the matter, or pay back the money with interest. This probably
because it is much easier and cheaper to pay someone off than to fight this slander/libel in court.
The most recently talked about news of sexual harassment was about Harvey Weinstein, an
American Film producer and former film executive. At the beginning of October this year, many
women came forward to accuse Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment and rape including, by Rose
McGowan, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ashley Judd and many others. The humiliated producer had been fired
from his company and Manhattan district attorney is currently seeking indictment against him.
A report from The New Yorker explains that Harvey Weinstein put a lot of effort to silences
accusers, journalists, and reporters. "The former movie executive denies the new accusations and

Why Is Walden Alive Today
Published on August 9 of 1854 philosopher and essayist Henry David Thoreau wrote the book
"Walden". "Walden" was based Thoreau's time living in a log cabin in the woods for two years after
realising how much material things were ruining our lives. He saw that people weren't
acknowledging their surroundings as much as they used to or feeling music and words the way they
did before they became obsessed with material things. He thought that the only way to feel and
enjoy life was by getting away from civilization, and I don't blame him. In the world we live in
today we are to engrossed with our phones or other forms of technology that we don't appreciate
what we have around us.

alive today he would not approve of our form of communication. He believed in talking to someone
in person because it was easier and it had more meaning than a letter did. Today instead of a using
our phone to text or call our friends or family that live close by we could easily go to their house and
talk in person which always better than sending text messages. "What should we think of the
shepherd's life if his flocks always wandered to higher pastures than his thoughts?" (1100) Thoreau
is basically using the shepherd's flock as a metaphor to describe us or the people in his time
obsessed with material things. We leave a life with no worries and no technology for a life that is set
at a fast pace and full of different social media platforms that have many negatives and positives. We
leave the calm and chill life behind because we feel the need to jump on the bandwagon.
Henry David Thoreau's claims on us being obsessed with material things and the effect it has on our

we will all go mad. We are already more than halfway there

Character Analysis Of The Hatchet

  • 1. Character Analysis Of The Hatchet Character Analysis for Hatchet Og once said, "Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough." Thirteen–year–old Brian Robeson is on a plane to Canada to see his father because his parents are divorced. When his pilot has a heart attack and dies, Brian does not know how to fly the plane, so he crashes in a lake in the Canadian wilderness. With only a windbreaker and hatchet, Brian has to fight to stay alive. Over the course of the next month, Brian is determined to survive alone in the wilderness. He stays alive because he is courageous, stays positive, and is determined to live. Brian stays alive because he stays positive and never gives up even when he's nervous and sad. When Brian was sad, he thought of his teacher and how Mrs.Perpich always said to keep going and stay positive. For example, He never gave up when he had spent weeks building his camp and a tornado came and destroyed the entire house and all things in it, he had his fish spears, bow and arrows, his bed which took hours to make and his walls were all lost. Also, when he drops the hatchet in the lake trying to get the backpack out the plane he keeps trying to get it even when he feels stupid for dropping it. Besides being positive, Brian is determined to live and will do anything just to survive. For example, at night he hears moving sand and walking near his camp, he wakes up in the morning and goes outside to find tracks in the sand that lead to a mound, he digs down and fines which he thought were snapping turtle eggs. He ate all the eggs raw even though they taste bad. Also, When he is depressed he just tried to find something to do to get his mind off of it and it worked. When he did not want to live anymore he found something to do like get more firewood or go hunting. In the book, Brian's courageousness and smartness helped him to survive. An example of Brian being courageous is when he was drinking water from the pond and a moose attacks him and broke one of his ribs but does not run or panic he just waits till the moose lets him leave. Plus his smartness helps him survive because he said, "if I get hurt I will not be able to hunt so I need a way "to store food in case I can not get it. So using dead ... • 5. Is The American Dream Still Alive Today? America has long been known as "The Land of the Free", "Home of the Brave", and has established that "All men are created equal."(US Declaration of Independence 1776) Although all of these things are what made America a choice place to live; she has not been without her flaws. One of the major flaws that stands in the path of the American dream today is the inequality of the sexes. Women are treated so unjustly when it comes to economic and social equality, women are not given the same opportunities as their male counterparts; but women should take a stand today to guarantee equality in the future . The question that lingers in the hearts of all Americans is: is the American dream still alive today? Or has it simply become too unobtainable that it has vanished from our eyes? A seemingly simple question to answer, "What is the American dream exactly?" becomes much more complex when we actually think about it. The American dream is completely different for everyone, but a well–known dream is the "Bigger is better" mantra that many Americans tend to want: bigger houses, bigger televisions, bigger cars, bigger handbags, and bigger savings accounts. America has been the land of opportunity, and has stretched her arms out to all who likened to take a trip across a sea or border. But early it was stated that the American dream is different for everyone, so what possibly could be a dream other than working hard and getting rich? Well, what about this: equality. Equality, ... • 9. Are Humans Are Still Alive Today As a famous evolutionary biologist Ernst Mayr once quoted "Evolution is as such is no longer a theory for a modern author. It is as much a fact as that the earth revolves around the sun." Evolution is the key to the human race's survival on the earth. The fact that humans have evolved so well has made them able to become the top of the food chain, and to maintain this position must continue to adapt and evolve better and faster than all other species. In opposition to some, most scientists believe that evolution in humans is still happening today, and is a key element to why humans are still alive today, without modern evolution humans might have died from malnutrition, disease, or just been pushed down to the bottom of the food chain. Modern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Modern evolution is a very important process for humans to survive. • 13. Martin Luther King Alive Today In a popular tv show called, "The Boondocks", there was an episode where the main character, Huey Freeman, speculated what would happen if Martin Luther King Jr. was alive today. In this alternate universe, Dr. King entered a coma after his attempted assassination in 1968 and woke up thirty years later in 2000. When he woke up, he is saddened that his dreams of peace and equality have not rung true in the contemporary world. The 9/11 attacks, Iraq War and the current state of the African American community caused King to become disillusioned with the world. Disappointed that the sacrifices of the civil rights movement and his ideas of peace never impacted people, King dies heartbroken. It is an interesting thought to speculate how historical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Machiavelli was not concerned with whether a person was inherently good or bad, nor was he concerned with whether the elites exploited the weak. He was only concerned with whether an individual was competent or incompetent. A cruel dictator who kept his state in check would be look upon more favorable than a weak, but good–mannered politician who is unable to secure any influence. "Cesare Borgia was considered cruel; yet his cruelty restored Romagna, uniting it in peace and loyalty. If this result is considered good, than he must be judged must kinder than the Florentines..." (Machiavelli, p. 59) In Machiavelli's eyes, the end justifies the means which is the central underlying message in his work, "The Prince." Machiavelli was one of the first to suggest the realism of politics and that practical methods were superior to moral actions. At the time, many people would look to religion and to the Church for guidance in state affairs. The Church's power was great at the time because many European rulers were Catholic and would often seek to the Church for guidance or mediation. In fact, Machiavelli disliked the immense power the Church had and advocated for secularism in politics. Machiavelli believes that religion was holding people back from effectively governing states and that they needed to use their own intuition instead of their own religion and idealism. • 17. Positives And Negatives Of Consumerism Just what is consumerism, and is it beneficial or detrimental to our economy and society? Basically, consumerism is the ideology that people must buy products and services in order to allow the economy to function correctly, but is this line of thinking accurate? It is entirely possible that consumerism is creating a downward slope, leading us into greed and selfishness; but it is also argued that consumerism is merely a means to stimulate the economy and produce a better society as a whole. There are flaws in the system of course: pollution, greed, wasted materials; but there are also benefits to it, such as, the creation of new jobs, the growth of businesses, and even a show of patriotism. In essence, consumerism is both a positive and a negative force in the modern world, depending on how it is utilized and portrayed, for example: a person with a positive world value would best consider balancing out their life so they are neither needlessly consuming nor being a minimalist to a ... There is methods of taking it too far, such as wearing the same dress for an entire year (Holt 1–3), but there is a way to use minimalism within reason to benefit both arguments. And while it is good to care about the environment and not waste materials, people should not take it to extremes that could be unhygienic or detrimental to their health. (Holt 1–3). A perfect example of a healthy medium would be being considerate to the fact that consumers have the option to only buy necessities and the occasional goods and/or services for entertainment or pleasure (Millburn and Nicodemus). The idea of the healthy medium has long been since argued from even before the 1980's, when people considered the idea of "Whoever dies with the most toys wins," to today where many are starting to think that we must "Make due with less" (Kennedy), but is either side fully ... • 21. The Scarlet Letter: Themes Alive Today Mike Esposito Mrs. Forstrom American Literature – 1 7 November 2012 The Themes Are Still Alive Today Ah The Scarlet Letter, whether we like it or not, it is now a book we have all read and have most likely come to hate. Whether it be because of the old setting in the Puritan Massachusetts Bay Colony in Boston that we cannot relate to or the old English language in which it is written, Nathaniel Hawthorne just failed to create a novel that most teenagers of the early twenty–first century can enjoy and appreciate. It must be pointed out that first, it's doubtful he cares, and more importantly that this just simply should not be the case. We juniors should pay more attention to the novel, especially with the thought that the messages ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One night his agony and remorse sleepwalks him to the scaffold that Hester was embarrassed on years earlier, as Hawthorne words it, "he had been driven hither by the impulse of that Remorse which dogged him everywhere" (144). This clearly portrays the message of hiding a sin can be too much to handle and can destroy a person. Now that the theme of the different things sin can lead to is discussed in The Scarlet Letter, let's relate it to our life. As the Christian religion will preach, everyone in the entire world sins all the time. Whether the sins are small or really serious, they are a part of our life all the time, and mostly those that are seriously poor decisions can have a great affect on us. As is illustrated with Hester in the novel, those poor choices can be made up for and can give us strength in our later life. For example, steroid use in baseball is a very popular issue. Ryan Braun, outfielder in the MLB, was suspected to have used performance enhancing drugs after a failed urine test. Clearly, taking steroids was a bad choice for him to make, and although it is not commonly thought of as one, it is a sin. However, Braun came back the next season after the scandal and had a career year. He recognized his mistake and came back stronger than ever, which is quite relatable to Hester and how her sin made her bold. Also, on the other side, sins can lead people today into having too much guilt to be able to handle, no matter how venial or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I know that he would be proud of the nation's first African American president, President Barack Obama. He would find comfort to know that we have a diverse Congress to oversee the laws that are set for our nation. If Dr. King were alive today, he would be a witness to a new society that fulfills his dreams of unification. He would challenge our nation to continue to overcome economic issues, financial burdens and global wars facing citizens today. He would boldly invite us as a society to stand even taller and stronger as now a diverse nation. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream was to bring down the color barrier ... • 33. Reflection Paper I chose assessment #10: Authenticity Scale (Biswas–Diener, 2010, p. 122) for my assessment. Between this current quarter and the last, I pushed myself beyond limits on another section of the Appalachian Trail. On the morning of day number 3 out of 6, I snapped a selfie of myself as I crested a ridge line on a bald (treeless ridge line with unlimited views). The photo was unique and looked manipulated with a filter due to the glare from the sunrise burning through thin patches of fog spilling over the ridge as if the mountain was an airfoil. That photo is now my Facebook profile picture and titled, "Nothing artificial." I have always pushed myself to be true and authentic in all I do. That does not mean being perfect, it means being honest with myself. Unfortunately, this strength of authenticity (i.e., the VIA strength of honesty is further defined as being authentic with integrity) facilitates a mindset that does not tolerate others who are not. One of my other strengths (as tested in a spiritual gifts test) is discernment. I can usually tell when someone is not being authentic. I strive to be authentic and I expect the same from others if they want me to trust them. The news is full of stories of a lack thereof in this strength of being authentic. Yesterday, Matt Lauer was fired from NBC for misconduct outside the scope of this discussion. He most likely had been posing for years. • 37. Gender Inequality In The Media Anderson Cooper. Don Lemon. Jake Tapper. Matt Lauer. These faces flash across our television screens, constantly crop up in our daily conversations, and dominate the news and media. But wait, there's something missing from the list of names above– a group constituting nearly 51% of our population– women("Women's Health USA 2012."). Scarce are mentions of successful female journalists. Scarce are women confidently voicing their political opinions on reputable news channels. Scarce are truly powerful female journalists. In reality, this problem goes unnoticed by most– in fact, despite being a news and politics aficionado, it didn't hit me until recently that women were so blatantly marginalized in this industry. It is perfectly valid to question the relevancy of such an obscure issue, but obscurity does not equate to unimportance. Portraying women unequally in the media defies not only our principles, but also the nation's principles. How can we claim that we are a nation of equal opportunity if we don't practice what we preach? We must encourage women to increase their political awareness and take on leadership roles in the media, especially in covering the most vital topics, because the underrepresentation of women in media encourages disparity between the sexes. The problem of gender inequality in media has two main aspects– the shunning of women into petty, less important aspects of news and a clear lack of women in leadership in media. Racism : Still Alive Today Racism: Still Alive Today If one were to drive down any random road in South Carolina today, they might spot a Confederate Flag hanging proudly from a building or a house or even a national monument. The ones who support the display of this flag say that it is more to do with cultural history than racism, however, the history that this flag represents is what motivated Dylann Roof to kill nine innocent people in a South Carolina church in 2015. In this day and age, how did something like the Charleston church shooting massacre occur? This essay will explain how racism, although not as common as it was in the past, still exists today and how this racism is connected to the story of Dylann Roof. Although certain racist laws, such as Jim ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... James Ballinger, Roof had mental illnesses such as Schizoid Personality disorder, social anxiety disorder, Mixed Substance Abuse disorder, and depression. Roof did not know how to interact with people in person so he "developed violent racist ideologies simply by reading white supremacist websites rather than through real–life interactions"(Post and Courier). Since he did not address his problems, he dealt with his mental illnesses by using white supremacy as a solution. He became infatuated with the thought that African Americans were inferior to whites and he wanted to start a race war with them. He found racist communities online and felt a sense of belonging with people of his skin color. To deal with his own mental illness, he developed a warped sociological imagination that if whites and blacks were pinned against one another, all of the world's problems would be solved. The Defense council for Dylann Roof stated that Roof was so lonely and depressed that he once "posted a Craigslist Ad for someone to accompany him to take a historical tour around Charleston"(Post and Courier). A child psychologist testified that he saw the ad and, when he had messaged Roof to get help Roof replied saying "I am in bed, so depressed I cannot get out of bed. My life is wasted. I have no friends even though I am cool. I am going back to sleep"(Post and Courier). However, in court Roof did not let his lawyers defend him because he did not want his lawyers to ... • 49. The Role Of Luck In Maus II Luck seems to regularly influence many parts of people's lives. However, without making smart choices at the right time, luck does not happen merely by chance. Throughout the whole story of Maus II, the role of resourcefulness in survival is conferred repeatedly. When the author's father, Vladek, was in Auschwitz, there were several moments where he was about to be killed. In such circumstances, resourcefulness played much larger role than luck, and it helped him to stay alive. Specifically, Vladek's ability to save items for the future, to find work and to trade kept him alive throughout the Holocaust. Therefore, people who survived were mostly the resourceful ones, not the ones who were randomly chosen or had the most luck. Although luck does play a role in the novel, the major factor that kept Vladek alive was his resourcefulness. Particularly, his ability to save items for the future really helped him to stay alive during the Holocaust. When Vladek was on a crowded train, Vladek used the saved thin blanket they had given him, and "climbed to somebody's shoulder and hooked it strong" above the other passengers in the train. This helped Vladek to "rest and breathe a little," because he did not need to fight for space to stand on the ground anymore (85). Moreover, the blanket allowed him to reach snow off of the train's roof. The snow kept him hydrated, and he was able to trade it with other captives for sugar. In this novel, Meursault commits a murder by killing an Arab and did not have any further investigation on the crime. However, Kamel Daoud an Algerian writer decided to write a response to Camus' book called The Meursault Investigation. This novel is about the victim's brother that was killed in The Stranger by Meursault. Sometimes when something unfair happens, there are two ways to look at it, the concept of injustice implies various perspectives, such as the feeling of revolt or to adapt to society norms as with people thinking would be acceptable. In fact, in The Stranger, the murder of the Arab on the beach didn't shock the population although it caught the eye of Kamel Daoud. However, the revolt can turn into revenge, as in the Meursault Investigation, the act of vengeance that he committed twenty years later, in the early days of independence in 1962, he considers it afterwards as a necessary catharsis not so much for himself but for his mother. Haroun says that for everyone, his brother has always been "Arab", and nothing else. An isnnocent, a victim, killed on a beach. " The other dead man, the murder victim, was my brother. Censorship should be practised sensibly so that it will not restrict the development and expression of new ideas while ensuring that social and political harmony is assured. Censorship plays a vital role in maintaining the morals of its society and creating an economically dynamic, socially cohesive and culturally vibrant nation. (N.A, N.D) The press exert a significant influence on the public and is partly responsible for the views and values that many hold. Hence, it should be responsible with what it put forth to the public. Singapore has gradually moved from film censorship to film classification and now to the focus on media literacy. Media Authority of Singapore (MDA) plays a significant role in regulating and conducting matters pertaining to the media. It is guided by legislation/acts such as Media Development Authority of Singapore Act, code of practice and guideline to comply and enforce the entities. In this term paper, we will discuss how the media handle censorship and classification related matters as well as reviewing the Films Appeal Committee under the films act policy. However at the same time the dog seems to gain the human quality of good sense. This quality of good sense, which the dog acquires, allows it to away from the same fate of the man. There are many examples of how this is portrayed as the story makes headway. The first example of how the man becomes more bestial occurs after his first fire fails. After his fire fails, his hands are too cold to allow him to pick up matches. He was trying everything in order to warm up his hands, but nothing was working. However, the man did not listen to anybody and insisted on proceeding in the brutal cold, which led to his death. Nevertheless, the dog used his sense and was able to stay alive. Once its master was dead, it knew it had to get to shelter. Thus, it immediately headed for the cabin. Another example of the dog's turn to human characteristics comes when the man has the crazy idea of killing the dog in order to keep his hands warm. When the man called the dog, it knew something was wrong. The story read, 'Something was the matter, and its suspicious nature sensed danger. It knew not what danger, but some where, somehow, in its brain arose an apprehension of the man...'; This is another example in which the dog uses its uncanny senses to avoid the fate of the man. Today, there is a very slow, if any, gain in the numbers of women who succeed. This was relevant to my paper in answering the question of why there are certain expectations of women in television news. The textbook, Gender, Race and Class in Media had a few chapters relevant to my paper. Larry Gross wrote a chapter titled, "Out of the Mainstream: Sexual Minorities and Mass Media." He discussed various stereotypes in our society that lead to stereotypes in all areas of our lives. I found some of my sources from Oasis, and also used a couple of magazine articles that were relevant to the subject. I focused on the questions that I wanted to answer and drew points from the material that were relevant and provided substantial evidence to answer my questions. I found that opinions and thoughts of women who had been through the business were most helpful. There was one big limitation I faced if I wanted to prove that women in television news were discriminated upon based on sex and age. Women have been fired from their anchor positions, and it has seemed that the reasons were because of looks or aging. But this is hard to prove. In August, Carol Schrader, a woman anchor from KETV–TV in Omaha, Nebraska was asked to leave. The Play Developed By The Molasses Flood The indie game scene has blossomed in recent years as the home console market has welcomed small developers with open arms to self–publish their titles and reach a gaming audience and community once inaccessible to them. Indie games and their developers often take risks with game design, and express their ideas in fresh and creative ways. The Flame in the Flood, an indie title developed by The Molasses Flood, is one of these titles as it places the player in the role of a young woman who is accompanied by her dog as they travel down a treacherous river and scavenge for food and other resources. The world in which the game takes place has become flooded, and the player must navigate their way down river to find shelter, resources, and valuables to stay alive. One could interpret the flame in the title as a symbol of desire and willpower, meanwhile the flood is the constant struggle and battle that one must face. The Flame in the Flood will not appeal to everyone as the game's atmosphere and setting is of the gloomy and isolated variety, but those interested in the survival genre will find a challenging game that has charm buried underneath its tough exterior. If you are in need of a lengthy tutorial or gradual means of progress, you won't find that in The Flame in the Flood. The game starts off by placing you in a dire situation as you scavenge for resources in the opening area, and are then immediately pushed on your makeshift boat so that you move towards other areas to ... If Socrates were alive today, how must he feel about the Delphic inscription of "Know thyself" would still be a relevant question in which our society is still trying to answer in 21st Century living? In today's fast paced society, the individual can easily get dehumanized by their work, technology, family commitments and the political process. A person is easily swayed by public opinion and not be able to think for themselves in fear of retribution and conflict. Sometimes it is easier to go with the mass than being the obstacle in the river that moves the water move in a different direction. If one seeks to attain self–knowledge before commenting on other matters I believe that our society today would be a more compromising and better place. Socrates wrote nothing of his thoughts down and we rely mainly on Plato's interpretation and recollection of the man and his teachings. Although Socrates did not see himself as a teacher and that he does not feel that he had wisdom as bestowed upon him by the oracles (Ahbel–Rappe 6). Socrates felt that he was not worthy of seeing himself as being wise, but what he did accomplish was that he allowed others to begin questioning their very essence and existence. During that time Poe lived a very sad and troubled life. Poe often wrote about the struggles he has gone through and the intense emotions he experienced on a regular basis. If Edgar Allan Poe was still alive today, he would continue to write about his experiences, as well as incorporate the struggles of communities that surround him. Edgar Allan Poe has always been known for his depressing and sad writings. I have no doubt that these feelings would follow him into the present day. Poe didn't have a good family life growing up. His parents were both absent in his childhood, and he was separated from his brother and sister to go off and live with John and Frances Valentine Allan. Poe was always a very talented poet growing up, but his literary passions were not supported by the household he lived in. Let me break down here some of the chivalry rules compared with the actions of the people of the current world. One rule of chivalry is that you have to honor and respect women. Back in the days of King Arthur this was carried out greatly but if you look at the lack of respect given to women today you see that this rule of chivalry no longer exists. Another rule of chivalry is to never do battle to obtain goods. Well this is the rule that is the most broken in our world in my opinion. I always see on the news have robberies are made and how things are stolen. Sometimes people get hurt in the process of this and that is just not right. I wish that the convicts of the world would take a lesson in what is right from the Knights of the Round Table. Now a very debatable rule of chivalry is do not do battle without cause. Now what can be justified as proper cause. When you look at the wars that are going on today some can be justified as having proper cause. If a country is going to cause unworthy harm to many innocent victims it is alright to go in and send them a message. If a country is breaking a few trade sanctions or something of that nature then another punishment can be handed down, but not necessarily war. Now when you look at gang wars those probobly have a hidden cause that none of us see, but still that doesn't make it right. Reinhart 1 Brooke Reinhart Alyson Dickerman English 101–17–14 12 December 2014 As much as we may have progressed as a country and as a global culture, sexism is still alive today. It affects men, women, people who don't fit our gender binary system, how we view ourselves and how we view each other. A powerful force in combating the gender inequalities we face today is feminism. Feminism is a social movement for gender and sex equality, and a personal commitment to understanding and achieving gender equality in everyday life. As children grow up, gender roles try to put girls in their place from the beginning. When people see a little girl the number one comment is "She's so cute!" or "You look so pretty". By Reinhart 2 focusing on how pretty the little girls look, we teach them that that's what matters most instead of who they are as a person. As feminists we don't encourage girls to be pretty, we encourage them to be pretty brilliant. ("Inspire Her Mind" Youtube.) Lack of representation is an enormous issue for girls currently. When young girls look at the list of presidents in the US, they don't see anybody who looks like them. Women only have ¼ of stem jobs, own 7% of tv stations, and have 5% of executive positions in the media. (Diana Mitsu Klos "Status of Women in U.S. Media 2013"), (Heather R. Human "Stem Fields and the Gender Gap: Where are the women?"). People will argue that this is because women just have different interests and don't want to pursue those things. That may be part of the problem, but a larger issue is that as a kid boys are pushed harder to get into science and take on leadership roles because it's expected of them. For me it has always been the case in school projects where if a boy took charge and led the group then he was proactive and a leader, but if I did it I was "bossy", and that is still true today in college. The death penalty is an option considered in all homicide cases and is the most gruesome penalty available in the United States. The penalty is immensely costly, in accurate, and causes long term family damage, therefore it should be abolished in all countries starting with the U.S. The death penalty is very costly in more ways than ever thought. One of the more obvious ways the death penalty is costs so much is paying for the prisoner. They are fed three times a day which costs money, as does the water used for them to bathe and brush their teeth. For one year to be properly housed it costs the county anywhere from 20,000 to 40,000 dollars, an average of 30,000 dollars a year (Hirby, 2015). If the inmate is waiting anywhere from 10–15 years, according to Madelyn Farfan a Torrington Police Department Detective who has been in service for thirteen years, to be officially put on death row that's anywhere from 300,000– 450,000 dollars while waiting for a final verdict. These expenses are outrageous. The inmate is waiting this extensive amount of time when they could have already served a full sentence of someone who previously had a clean record before committing a murder. Winston Churchill Winston Churchill was correct to state that history does in fact repeat itself, and when one looks at the past one can see that McCarthyism, the execution of making unethical claims or accusations to restrict known differences, is a recurring theme throughout human history. Proof is shown in the events of the McCarthy era (the intensified fear of Communists from the late 1940s and early 1950s also recognized as the Red Scare) the burning of Jews during the Black Death, the events of the Salem Witch Trials, and other episodes of mass hysteria. The spirit of McCarthyism continues to plague mankind and is kept burning by people who possess post 9/11 fears about Islamist terrorists (citation). Characterized by widespread anxiety and panic, incoherent beliefs and/or behavior, or unexplainable symptoms of illness, mass hysteria (a factor of McCarthyism where a varied population experience similar frantic symptoms – either from a "phantom illness" or a specific event) has appeared a series of times within mankind 's past and has two significant elements: Collective Delusion (CD) and widespread panic. We center on the first world perspective. Feelings of invulnerability lead to fantasy of omnipotence (9). Conflation of exploration and exoneration leads to the conception of responsibility. This includes isolating the event and conceptualizing rationality. Responsibility is the juncture of being acted on and acting. This causes the "response." There is some basis of political community. Violence and vulnerability can be led to the exploitation of the ties we have with one another (27). Butler wants to say that we are always vulnerable. Butler wants to complicate the picture of autonomy. The narrative of autonomy leads to violence and stratification which in turn leads to dehumanization and derealation. We need to become aware of this process to understand our relationships. When we mention the narrative of autonomy we are speaking about the body. The body is both a site of private and public spheres. Most people see the body as only being in the private sphere but in reality, the body is constantly being regulated an example being like what clothes are appropriate to wear to different occasions. Butler wants to relate this to the relationships we have with legitimate power. Butler uses Focult's idea of sovereignty and governmentality. Sovereignty is seen as "representative." It is an individualized, concentrated power that involves decision–making. Governmentality on the other hand revolves around the process of law. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 117. Why Do We Need Feminism To Be Alive Today Do we need feminism to be alive today? If you're an intelligent human being, you may be wondering why I'm asking you such a silly question, since the answer is obviously 'yes of course, who would think otherwise?' You'll be very surprised then to hear about a disturbingly large number of men who (even today) would argue that a women's purpose is solely to serve the male population: a woman's place is in the home they argue. They tell jokes about women with two black eyes, having to be told twice. Women are still perceived as submissive and below men, which is still far from the gender equality that some naïve people believe we have in today's world. Do men and women get paid the same wages for doing the same jobs? No. Are women's accusations against men in situations of sexual and domestic assault taken seriously? No. There have been so many inaccurate and negative definitions of feminism which have been drilled into people's minds, so let's start with the true definition of feminism, shall we? Feminism is the radical notion that women are people and should be allowed the same rights, power and opportunities as men and be treated with the same respect. Nothing more, nothing less. If you agree with this statement, then congratulations! You're a feminist! One of the most popular false beliefs about feminism is that it's a female–only movement with the goal of female supremacy over the age old enemy, men. This commonly used misconception is usually heard spewing out of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 121. Is Ralph A Good Leader Essay What makes up a leader? In the book Lord of the Flies, whose author is William Golding, this question wasn't well thought through before a leader was chosen. Though the main characters are only little kids, they had a challenging choice they had to make; they had not the slightest idea that the choice that they would make might amount to some of them losing their lives. In the Lord of the Flies, a group of boys from an all–boys school, crash–landed on an inhabited island. Upon arriving on the island, they had to choose who would be chief. Mostly everybody chose the same kid as a chief. Though, only a handful of boys, the choir boys were loyal to their choir leader, Jack, voted him as chief. Yet the result was the same, Ralph was chief. The reason behind why the kids nominated Ralph chief was because he looked more appealing than jack and he seemed to know what to do. Like for instance, the kids were bewildered when they saw that Ralph had the conch in his hands and that he was not the "man with a trumpet." Then they realized that Ralph was "the man with the trumpet" and perceived that he would make a fine leader. I say overall: his honesty, his ability to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nicole smith writes in her article, "What Ralph represents symbolically is more meaningful to the boys at this point than his actual skills," (smith). This is true, even though the kids were not told that ralph was supposed to symbolize leadership, order, and responsibility, they saw somehow that he was made up of those things. This idea is supported in the novel where it says, "They obeyed the summons of the conch, partly because Ralph blew it, and he was big enough to be a link with the adult world of authority," (Golding 59). The kids see Ralph as a natural leader. He keeps order and is organized. The kids are satisfied that ralphs is responsible about doing his job as a proper ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dr. Wolfson is a cardiologist who now does holistic medicine and supports the anti–immunization movement. According to WebMd.com, "holistic medicine is a form of healing that considers the whole person: body, mind, spirit, and emotions, in the quest for optimal health and wellness". In his interview Dr. Wolfson called "bad mothers" who vaccinate their children without knowing or caring about what chemicals are in them. According to Dr. Wolfson, we should let children have measles, chicken pox, rubella, mumps because "these are the rights of our children to get it." Wolfson stated in his interview "Measles is not a big deal." Measles outbreak in the United States has increased tremendously since parents refuse to have their children vaccinated. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published a report, "Measles Cases and Outbreaks," that shows how the measles cases have been increase nationwide. This controversy started when "The Lancet" published a research made by Dr. Andrew Wakefield, who suggested the vaccine can cause autism. After investigation the British medical journal published an article criticizing Dr.Wakefield and accusing him of fraud. As a result "The Lancet" retracted the research. The dishonest research and violation of ethic caused Dr. Wakefield to lose his medical license. However, Dr. Wakefield's research made a big impact in the way some American parents view vaccines. • 129. Racism Is Still Alive Today Avery Matney Mr. Berkoben English IV 13 November 2015 Racism in Oklahoma Everyone is different. No matter what you look like, where you came from, or how you grew up. Race does not define a person. Racism issues have appeared throughout many different generations. In Oklahoma, there are factors of events proving that racism is still alive today. Racism is any negative thought or action toward members of a racial minority or any manifestation of racial inequality. There are different types of racism: Individual racism, Institutional racism, and Cultural racism. This essay will analyze racism and certain component parts: causes, effects, & prevention. There are various examples of causes coming from racism. Fraternity members at the University of Oklahoma learned a racist chant which was caught on camera and posted online. It was not something that was a part of the tradition. "Do I think these young men are racist in their heart? Do I think they're proud of what they did? No." said Boren. (Bidwell). 25 students have received discipline from this video coming out. Also kids from school districts have experienced racist remarks and bullying. Kids are getting bullied for all types of reasons and racism is one of them. People think that remarks about your cultural or ethnicity are not a huge problem. • 133. The Pros And Cons Of Sexual Harassment Sexual harassment accusations regarding public figures has been one of the most popular news we see on social media these days. "Sexual harassment becomes a crime only when there is a nonconsensual touching or sexual contact that can be prosecuted." (Henning, 2017). Some of the accused individuals are admitting their guilt in some of these situations, while many are denying these allegations, particularly those that occurred decades ago. In many of the instances, money and other valuable considerations are being used to get documents signed that swore the party marking the claim to silence regarding the matter, or pay back the money with interest. This probably because it is much easier and cheaper to pay someone off than to fight this slander/libel in court. The most recently talked about news of sexual harassment was about Harvey Weinstein, an American Film producer and former film executive. At the beginning of October this year, many women came forward to accuse Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment and rape including, by Rose McGowan, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ashley Judd and many others. The humiliated producer had been fired from his company and Manhattan district attorney is currently seeking indictment against him. A report from The New Yorker explains that Harvey Weinstein put a lot of effort to silences accusers, journalists, and reporters. "The former movie executive denies the new accusations and "any allegations of non–consensual sex," but said in a statement to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is a quarter after ten in the morning. The busy workers rushed through the metal automatic doors like water rushing through a dam. Huge planes took off the long moist concrete and soared up to the bright blue glistening sky. They sprung up and plummeted down. However, all was quiet. They followed each other 's paths like birds in a flock. The enormous transparent windows opened up the eyes of people and let sunlight flow in. It did not sound like a very pleasant sound. He was still groggy from his nap and was unaware that both engines had began to smoke. There was an announcement overhead. "This is your captain speaking, I am sorry to inform you all that we are having a double engine malfunction and we will have to make a crash landing. Keep your seat belts on and stay calm. Ryan was disorientated. He was on the floor looking up at the behemoth of smoke above him. People were running out of the plane desperately trying to stay alive. He felt something on his neck. It was a man. Ryan couldn't make out who it was. He was seeing somewhat blurry, but was aware enough to see that the man was seeing if he was living. The man helped him up. • 141. To What Extent Is The American Dream Still Alive Today Is the American dream still alive today? Many people's view towards this ongoing topic infers an improbable answer compared to previous years. Although many Americans argue that there is no American dream, I suggest that the American dream is improbable and cannot be achieved due to economic classes and poor infrastructure in helping the non–rich. The belief of the American dream of becoming rich in America has been impractical due to economic classes in today's modern times. An article about achieving the American dream by Michael Gonchar states, "The decks have been stacked against not only the lower class but also the lower middle class". The problems that the economic class creates in achieving the American dream is drastically notable. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With 4.7 million people waking up to Matt Lauer's face on the sunny Today Show there has been breadcrumbs about his previous sexual encounters. For some time, America's love affair with the young, handsome news reporter seemed as if he could do no wrong because we loved who he was. High–profile men like Matt Lauer must be shocked with women coming out and having any strength. Starting at the beginning of his journey at NBC news in 2001 he already had a sexual relation with an office employee. Already at the very beginning of the career Lauer was starting his sexual harassment reputation. That wasn't the only sexual encounter he has had with employees. In 2014 at the Sochi Olympics he had inappropriate conduct with another employee, yet another one. Many years later and he still proceeds to participate in inappropriate sexual behavior with his colleagues. How many instances does it take before it becomes serious? Lauer proved it wasn't a serious issue in his opinion when in 2016 Meredith Viera found sex toys in his dressing room that he gave to a woman working in his office. Having Viera find the sex toy and later having a colleague report about Lauer giving her a sex toy was proof that it wasn't just for his wife who he has been married to the whole time working at NBC News. But then again woman have no power so it's okay for men to treat them this way. For all the attention Matt ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 149. Why Is Walden Alive Today Published on August 9 of 1854 philosopher and essayist Henry David Thoreau wrote the book "Walden". "Walden" was based Thoreau's time living in a log cabin in the woods for two years after realising how much material things were ruining our lives. He saw that people weren't acknowledging their surroundings as much as they used to or feeling music and words the way they did before they became obsessed with material things. He thought that the only way to feel and enjoy life was by getting away from civilization, and I don't blame him. In the world we live in today we are to engrossed with our phones or other forms of technology that we don't appreciate what we have around us. Thoreau liked to live life one day at a time and have a clear picture ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I think that there are very few important communications made through it" (1103). If Thoreau was alive today he would not approve of our form of communication. He believed in talking to someone in person because it was easier and it had more meaning than a letter did. Today instead of a using our phone to text or call our friends or family that live close by we could easily go to their house and talk in person which always better than sending text messages. "What should we think of the shepherd's life if his flocks always wandered to higher pastures than his thoughts?" (1100) Thoreau is basically using the shepherd's flock as a metaphor to describe us or the people in his time obsessed with material things. We leave a life with no worries and no technology for a life that is set at a fast pace and full of different social media platforms that have many negatives and positives. We leave the calm and chill life behind because we feel the need to jump on the bandwagon. Henry David Thoreau's claims on us being obsessed with material things and the effect it has on our lives is definitely still relevant today as I'm sure it will for the rest of humans time on earth. If we continue with our obsession with material things rather than human interaction and communication we will all go mad. We are already more than halfway there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mark Watney was assumed dead during an extreme sand storm after sustaining life threatening injuries and damage to his space suit. The rest of the crew evacuated back to Earth, leaving Mark. However, he is able to repair his suit and return to the base, where he begins a series of scientific excursions to keep himself alive for the four or so years until the next Mars expedition, which is his only hope of rescue. Mark learns to grow potatoes in his new home, he creates water from scratch, and rebuilds various space ship equipment. This all sounds ridiculous and unrealistic, but entertaining. In case all his efforts fail, he has enough morphine for a lethal dose. Unfortunately, there is a direct parallel to this world. There are far too many real people with a "plan B" in case it gets too hard. When someone sees that as a viable alternative, it makes it that much easier to give up on the harder reality. Thankfully, Mark and plenty of real people keep working hard to survive, get help, and not give up. Intentionally or not, Andy Weir not only created an exciting and successful book, but also presented mental illness in a new way. There is no stigmatism against Mark, he did not choose his circumstances and his ability to simply stay alive is remarkable. The same is true for millions of people suffering from mental illness in similar (yet Earth–bound) situations. However, these people are seen as broken, or lazy, or looking for attention. Their ability to keep themselves alive despite all their problems is equally as remarkable, but they are not seen as brave or admirable the way Mark ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
