Wild Animals In Captivity
Most wild animals that are unable to survive in the wild are kept in zoos and animal rescues. However, when wild animals are kept in captivity for
too long it can lead to some odd behaviors and health issues. Some of the issues animals can develop in captivity are over grooming, pacing back
and forth, and zoochosis. These can cause animals to develop odd behaviors that can lead to dangerous health issues and sometimes even death. One
of the most popular behaviors that animals develop in captivity is over grooming. Some of the signs of over grooming is excessive licking or bald
spots. Animals normally over groom themselves due to boredom. It can cause an animal to lose their fur which is very dangerous for them since their fur

This is seen a lot at zoos and is normally considered an animal trying to get attention. However, this is not why animals are pacing back and forth.
In fact, it is actually a sign of stress, boredom, lack of exercise, and bad nutrition. This is mostly caused by a small exhibit or cages that do not allow
an animal to be able to run around as it would in the wild or find its own food. Kathleen N. Morgan and Chris T. Tromborg writes "In another study of
zoo–housed leopards, overall activity was suppressed when visitors were present, and large increases in visitor numbers resulted in increased
pacing (Mallapur and Chellam, 2002), a behavioral indicator of agitation or stress" (1). Pacing back and forth in animals can also lead to zoochosis.
Zoochosis is caused by animals being in cages or small enclosures, lack of exercise and ability to keep their minds active. Animals with zoochosis
will act strange, such as biting on the bars of their enclosure, hurting themselves and others. A number of symptoms can suggest that an animal is
suffering from a psychological problem however zoochosis is something a zoo keeper does not want an animal to develop. In most cases once an
animal develops zoochosis and they are unable to cure the animals they will need to put down which is why it is very important for the animal to not

Exotic Animals In Captivity
People around the world have been to a zoo and saw all the animals in their artificial habitats. Most have been told that some of the animals are not
native in the area, knowing that they've been able to see and learn about a non–native animal they would say that they are fascinated to see such a
creature. Although there are some people who would disagree with animals in captivity is wrong, which is why these pieces of evidence claim
otherwise.
Supporters of this topic believe that animals in captivity helps saves animals from extinction. Leslie–Ann Rush, an animal lover who raises exotic
animals, believes that by caring for these captive–bred creatures she is doing her part to help keep lemurs alive on Earth, and she cares for her animals
with a profound commitment that consumes her days and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some exotic–animal owners spend thousands a year on fresh meat, for carnivores that dine daily on raw steak, for primates–omnivores with complex
dietary needs for snakes, which eat rat after rat. A four–year–old was mauled by a mountain lion his aunt kept as a pet, a 55–year–old woman's face
disfigured by her friends lifelong chimpanzee, and an 80–year–old man attacked by a 200–pound kangaroo(Wild Obsession).
Although my opponents believe that exotic animals don't make good pets, this isn't valid because, exotic animals are special and are supposed to be
hard to take care of. Instead, we should let people with the knowledge to care for these animals, take care of them as pets because, like Leslie–Ann
Rush, she actually knows how to care for her exotic animals.
In the end, I believe that animals in captivity is good, because it helps fund organizations, saves animals from extinction, and helps educate people. We
all should educate ourselves on exotic animals and their needs, we should also force permits to keep/capture exotic

Are Animals In Captivity Or Inhumane?
Firstly, wild animals in captivity is inhumane. Animals in zoos are often thought of as objects instead of living beings with feelings and emotions. An
example of a situation that was inhumane and proves that zoos care more about income than animals took place at the Copenhagen zoo where an
18–month–old, healthy giraffe was killed because it was considered useless for breeding. According to an article by www.peta.org "Even large,
well–known, and popular zoos engage in unscrupulous practices, such as dumping unwanted animals or taking animals from the wild." Because
most of these animals were raised or born in captivity, they were not able to develop the necessary survival skills needed to survive in the wild.
These are a few of the multiple examples of how zoos are inhumane, and are not beneficial for animals.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One example of an animal that has proved to have a longer life span in the wild is African elephants. According to an article by National Geographic,
"For African elephants, the median life span is 17 years for zoo–born females, compared to 56 years in the Amboseli National Park population."
Another example of an animal with a shorter life expectancy in zoos than in the wild are killer whales. According to an article by
www.whalefacts.org both female and male killer whales have a reduced life expectancy in captivity. Female killer whales live to be about 70–80 years
old in the wild, but only live to about 50 in captivity. Male killer whales live to be about 50–60 years old in the wild, but only live to their 30's in
captivity. Both of these animals are only a few of the multiple animals that have longer, and happier lives when they are in the wild, and not in cages at

Imagine if you were thrown into a cage, or beat for no specific reason, or being forced to do something you didn't want to do, all for the entertain of
humans. Animals have been used for entertainment purposes in both the past and present. The total number of animals in captivity for the sake of
entertainment of humans is 751,931. There are many different types of Animal abuse. Some examples of different types of animal abuse are poor
living conditions, inhumane rearing practices or purposeful execution of violent and harmful acts against the animals, such as, dog fighting. Some
major contributors to animal cruelty around the world are, animal testing, fishing and slaughterhouses. Animals in captivity are forced to perform silly

It is very hard for zoos to replicate the natural environment that the animal is used to living in. Capturing animals is cruel no matter the reason.
Animals have their own rights, and animals have their own lives while they're out in the wild. Capturing these animals destroys their way of life.
"For example elephants travel long distances in the wild in large groups that is their way of life. When elephants are in a zoo, they can't travel long
distances, in fact, the amount they can move can barely be named as worthy of travel." (List of Pros and Cons of Zoos). Experts, scientists, and
researchers who study elephants in the wild strongly opposed a similar capture in 2003, stating, Taking elephants from the wild is not only traumatic
for them, it is also detrimental to their health. We believe the time has come to consider them as sentient beings and not as so much money on the hoof
to be captured and sold and displayed for our own use. (Zoos: Pitiful

Animals Should Not Be Held in Captivity
Animal captivity has been an ongoing debate for over 60 years. There should be no question about whether animal captivity is wrong. "Hundreds of
thousands of wild animals across the world are snatched from natural habitats, forced into captivity and subjected to abuse, both mentally and
physically, in the name of entertainment and profit." (World Animal Protection 1) Places such as the circus use abusive training methods such as,
hooks, chains, whips, electric rods, and blunt instruments. (Born Free USA 1) Animals deserve to live freely in the wild. Their freedom is taken away
the moment they are put in a cage. When animals are brought into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In captivity, dolphins are trained to beach themselves so people can pet or kiss them, but if they stay in that position too long, they will slowly crush
their internal organs. In captivity, dolphins are trained through food deprivation and are given food when they perform tricks. When dolphins wave to
you, they are hungry and expect food. (World Animal Protection 1) Animals are sometimes given little to no food and water, which are necessities for
survival! Animals are often crammed into cages for long periods of time. Them being trapped in such a small place stresses them out and can hurt them
physically. Animals in captivity are prone to stress. They show signs of stress through pacing, swaying, and unnatural behavior. One major sign that
dolphins show that is considered "unnatural behavior" would be their activities. In the wild, dolphins spend 80% of their time below the surface
playing, hunting, exploring, etc. In captivity, dolphins spend 80% of their time above water. (World Animal Protection 1)
The second reason animals should not be held in captivity is because the exhibits they live in are too small and not natural to them. Zoos do not provide
animals with the proper habitats they need to survive. The habitats are designed to imitate the animal's natural habitat, but are usually not natural. There
are large animals, such as, elephants, that do not have the large space they need. Animals that are in

Animals In Captivity
Should animals live in their natural environment, or should they live in man made environment? Some people believe animals should live in
captivity, but animals that live in the wild get to live more naturally. They should live in the wild instead of living in captivity, so they are not
tampered with by humans as much. It would keep the environment the way it should be. If you take predators out of an environment, the
environment will be over run with other animals because the other animals population will not be controlled. Animals should live in the wild and
not in captivity. Animals should live in the wild including endangered animals, instead of captivity. Some people believe animals should be taken
care of in captivity because it is to dangerous for them in the wild. Animals do not truly belong in a cage. It is not fair for the animal to live in
captivity because the animal would not be able to roam freely like it could if it lived in the wild. If an animal can not make it in the wild, it needs
to either adapt to the wild or die which is a way of the population controlling itself. Animals are meant to live in the wild. Once you put a animal in
captivity and then decide to release it, the animal will probably die because it does not know how to hunt for food, and will not be able to defend
itself against other animals. If animals do not have enough room to roam around, they can become sick and depressed.... Show more content on

Some animals will die faster in captivity than in the wild because of changes in the environment. The natural food chain in the wild will get messed up

Animals In Captivity Analysis
In this set of materials, the reading passage claims that animals in captivity will benefit and provides three reasons of support. Nevertheless, the
professor opposes the text book and says that they are serious problems to keep animals in zoos and animals' parks. Also, he refutes each of the
author's reasons. First of all, the reading passage avers that animals would obtain the health and psychological treatment in captivity, which will
improve their health. While, the professor counters this point and explains that even though animals receive care from professionals in zoos, animals
live in limited space, which leads to psychological stress. Moreover, he points out that some animals perform unexpected behavior and attack visitors,

As many know, humans are naturally attracted to animals because they give off a feeling of joy and sometimes even safety. However, there are 751,
931 animals in Accredited Institutions as of 2017, and some of these institutions can be very harmful to the animals. Animal Captivity, such as in zoos
and aquariums, prevents animals from receiving necessities they need in order to survive or live a healthy life. This cruel mistreatment can have
multiple effects on the animals such as; starvation, sham chewing, and self–mutilation. Starvation is a harsh factor that can occur for various species in

77 elephants were examined at a British zoo, and only 11 of them were able to walk correctly. It is said that advancements are being made to
improve elephant environments in captivity, but numerous zoos have shut down their elephant attractions (Smith, 2008). Many people are
attracted to keeping wild animals as pets. They believe the wild animals to be interesting and exciting. At a young age, the animals may seem
easier to tame, but the older these animals get, the more aggressive they tend to become. Many problems can develop from keeping a wild animal
as a pet. Wild animals have specific needs that have to be met, in order for them to prosper. "Only the most exceptional zoos and wildlife centers
provide a living area that somewhat resembles the natural habitat of these animals, but it is virtually impossible to provide sufficient space for
larger species"(CFHS). In captivity animals do not lose their wild instincts. They can be extremely unpredictable, and if provoked they can cause
severe harm to people. Some wild animals, such as reptiles and hedgehogs can actually carry bacteria called salmonella, which is very easily
transmitted to humans. Exotic animals can be very social, and need to have a companion of the same species living with them. If the animal is kept
isolated from its kind, then it can suffer psychologically (CFHS). Many wild animals that are kept as pets often get abandoned because the owner was
not able to meet of its needs. Others try to

Essay On Animal Captivity
Imagine families going to a zoo, children are amazed by the different kinds of animals and learning many things about each animal. The children are
having a blast and the parents are glad to see the smiles on their faces and seeing animals that could be seen at any time without it being a once in a
lifetime experience especially for the rare and exotic animals. Unfortunately, the same feeling couldn't be said for the animals. These animals are
trapped in displays and couldn't experience the wild like they used to or never experience it at all. Over time, they experience defects that made them
depressed or aggressive. Animal Captivity has been a heated debate for years and still continues to this day. Zoos have downside with the effects on the
animals and why resorts would be the best option for animals.
One reason why animal captivity isn't a good idea for animals is the mental damage it cause being a confined a one area for decades. That animal
remembers is being with their family members one minute and suddenly being taken away and put into a zoo and perform for many years. This was
the case for Tilikum, a killer white whale who had decades of being a performer at SeaWorld and been taken when he was a baby. The documentary...

Treatment Of Animals In Captivity
Have you ever felt the feeling that you are trapped, mistreated, or a slave to society. In today's world, millions of animals are feeling this way right
now, a feeling no living creature can endure. Animals are living creatures whose sole purpose in life are to survive and thrive. Whose right is it to
stop and change that for them. In captivity animals are treated badly, they have the potential to hurt humans, and they weren't originally supposed to
be in captivity in the first place. These beautiful creatures of Mother Earth should be cared for, not used as slaves. In life, people in the world may
treat animals as if they are friends, however, animals in captivity are treated much worse. In Janet M. Davis's article "A Bittersweet Bow

Why We Should Put an End to Animal Captivity
In May 2016, a critically endangered gorilla was shot dead by zoo officials after a young child slipped into its enclosure. The incident created an
uproar, with the public debating either the mother's parenting skills or the justification of killing in an emergency situation. The public outrage was of
no avail, to an incarcerated animal who had no choice but to die at a place it never belonged. It is now more crucial than ever to question the
relevancy of keeping animals captive in zoos and aquariums.
Historically, people have collected and kept various animals as status symbols. Many of these "prized collections" were later transformed into public
zoos during the 19th century. What began as a private area for zoological study, thezoo eventually became a popular destination for a picnic and
entertainment. In those days, animals were confined to small cages, an alienating environment far cry from the open wilderness. While there has been
a considerable improvement since then, with the implementation of naturalistic enclosures, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

food or run away from predators. If that were the case, given the chance, animals wouldn't have escaped from their captivity in numerous instances.

Unnatural Treatment Of Animals In Animal Captivity
Man–made environments or animals are not right and unsuitable for their living. These animals are subjected to an unnatural environment. This causes
confusion which then leads to hostility potentially sending an animal to its death when they try to rebel. Then they are mistreated for scientific
purposes or beaten to fulfill a purpose. All these horrific things can happen to an animal that is forcibly taken from its home and sent into man–made
environments. Many horrific things happen to animals while in human captivity. One of these things is the unnatural treatment of animals in captivity.

shallow and small tanks they spend more time on the surface causing skin problems. This also caused their dorsal fins on top to collapse without the
support of the ocean water gravity pulls the fins over. In the wild a dorsal fin collapse happens in approximately 1% of killer whale and in captivity all
male and most female whales experience it. Most animals are put into cages much smaller than their natural habitat restricting their natural instincts to

Animal And The Presentation Of Captivity
The panthers advocate, our observatory narrator, acts almost as a conduit. The title gives implications of a third person narrative, yet Rilke
channels the animals emotional state also, affirming how "He feels...".The speakers attempt to steal the "gaze" of the restrained feline's "misted"
vision, is convincing. Although misted, we are given a clear insight, of the monotonous and bound lifestyle of the undomesticated cat. We are
informed that the panther is so powerless behind the bars, to the point of belief that there is no freedom "beyond them..." Powerless to the point,
that even his strength has become paralysed. It is therefore apposite to examine the characterisation of the animal and the presentation of captivity
that we are challenged by. The poem is permeated by literary techniques, standing as obvious signposts planted by Rilke, which spell out captivity.
We are lured by the very first line, due to a confession that the panther "can take in nothing more." The lack of hope and signs of weakness,
immediately pull the strings in our hearts, evoking a reaction. This is formed by a very distinct device, the helpless tone used by Rilke, a tone
which longs for freedom and the reassuring of hope; Appearing also as a persuasive plea; we hear there is "nothing more" as there is "no more
world". Rilke therefore cries on behalf of the panther who cannot speak for himself. The heavy accumulation of vision brings no surprise as to why
imagery is arguably, the most effective device

The Captivity Of Wild Animals
The captivity of wild animals has been a highly debated topic for many years. Zoos and aquariums are huge attractions and can be found all over

animal rights can use these movies to push their agenda and people who oppose these films say they are forms of propaganda. The fact of the matter
is that it does not matter what side of the argument that you are on it cannot be denied that these moves spark mass discussion. The question can be
asked are animals places on this earth for our amusement and entertainment or they here that we may cohabit with all aspects of life. Science has
proven that some animals have shown signs of distress while being in captivity.
Animals have been known to control and also are able to modify their environment. An important part in doing that, animals exhibit normal behavior.
Animals that are being held in captive environments may see changes in their normal behavior that can be a result from extreme amounts of stress.
When animals start to exhibit behaviors that are considered abnormal it can be thought that the animals are unable to adjust their behavior. So what

There have been many occurrences where trainers have been either attacked or killed by an animal held in captivity. SeaWorld trainers such as Keltie

Meanwhile, Dawn Brancheau had a more tragic death. Tilikum scalped, dismembered and broke the bones of Dawn, who was then drowned

because they counldn't find a home for the lion. I think that is so wrong. Another incident was also in Denmark. A 2–year–old giraffe was killed

Animal entertainment is when you use animals to entertain people for their pleasure. It began in the 1960s, when corporations such as SeaWorld,

was the first time a worldwide audience fell in love with these amazing creatures of the ocean. However, the issue with orcas being held captive is
still an issue today. There is animal captivity all around the world, but the issue at SeaWorld, is one of many documentaries, articles and speeches,
made to fight the neglect towards orcas in SeaWorld. SeaWorld's entertainment has caused arguments and disagreements since the 60s. In Canada,
back when there was a place called Sea Land, there was a brutal method they used to capture the orcas. The first thing they did was to go out on a
boat, see a mother and her baby, then corner them. Take the calf away from the mother, then throw them in little rings, separated from each other,

crazy because the space is stopping them from doing what they naturally do, which is roaming large bodies of water. In February 2010, there was an
attack with an orca named Tilikum. Tilikum killed Dawn Brancheau, an experienced trainer. The orca drowned Dawn by grabbing her by her ponytail,
then pulling her under the water. Orcas are very large animals and too socially complex, to adjust to the space in

Persuasive Essay For Animal Captivity
For Animal Captivity
Animal captivity is a controversial topic for many people. Many ideas have surfaced about animal captivity; it is a situation that has been discussed
for a long time so there are different points of view from people's opinions. Actions have been taken and while many people agree in that animal
captivity should not be permitted, there are without a doubt, there are some benefits that can come from it. When animals are brought into a zoo they are
being protected from starvation, predators, habitat loss, poachers etc. Zoos have many good benefits for the animals and for us. One is benefit is that the
zoos offer protection from hunters. "Animals are being hunted down for a lot of reasons, including their fur, ivory, some medical benefits

Not only are these animals held captive but they are also treated poorly and subjected to suffering. The slow torturous suffering of being locked up all
day as people pass by them and watch them. These animals have been treated harshly by the people working there and in some extreme cases, they
have even been shot to death. Animal captivity has huge effects on these animals, effects that should be considered illegal. Just like how we have
rights, animals have rights too. The Animal Welfare Act was signed in 1996, it is the only Federal law in the United States that protects animals.
("Animal Welfare." USDA APHIS. Web. 22 Feb. 2016.)This act regulates the how animals in exhibition and in research should be treated. There are
also other law that regulate this but they refer back to the Animal Welfare Act. Even though this law was created, there are some facilities that don't
follow it and sometimes these laws aren't enough to protect animals in captivity. Maybe the real issue is that animals should

Wild animals are known as "wild" animals for a purpose. If wild animals were intended to be kept shut up in a jail, also known as a zoo, then what
exactly is the point of contacting them wild animals anymore? Zoo authorities use many justifications to back up their place that having wild animals
in captivity is necessary, but those justifications are neither moral nor necessary enough reasons to deny animals of their organic right to independence.
Even under the best of conditions at the best of zoos, captivity cannot even begin to evaluate up to wild animals' organic settings. At zoos, animals are
often avoided from doing most of the things that are organic and essential to them. Zoos educate individuals that it is ... Show more content on

The Importance Of Life In Captivity For Animals
Life in captivity for animals is comparable in some situations to humans living inside of a prison. The restrictions that are imposed on these animals
while in captivity are unbearable living conditions that affect the animal both mentally and physically. The animals understand that this is not their
home which leads to the breakdown of their psyche. One example of this comes from a zoo in the United Kingdom. In the year 1979, the Bristol Zoo
gained a new animal which would become one of their biggest attractions. Misha the male polar bear caught the eye of the public with his unusual and
odd behavior. Researchers that studied animal rights in the late twentieth century linked this behavior to Misha's enclosure at the zoo. Researchers
came to the conclusion that the prison–like living conditions that Misha encountered was the cause of his psychotic appearance. The public had
described him as looking like a beast who was breaking down as a result of the captivity instead of an average polar bear in a zoo. The zoo was able
to view Misha through surveillance during this entire process, similar to humans living in a prison or an asylum. According to the article by Andrew
Flack, "Following media attention from animal rights organizations and the media between 1985 and the early 1990s, Misha's 'psychotic' appearance
in a repeatedly evoked image of the prisons and asylums of the past, where surveillance, spectacle, and suffering collided to alter the natures of the

Animal Rights For Animals In Captivity
Living in a world behind bars, having no sense of freedom, no thought of living in an environment where the boundaries are set by mountains, rivers,
deserts and oceans. This is the life of an animal living in captivity. What gives us the right to take animals from their natural habitats and put them in an
environment or home that doesn't even compare to what their home is. They don't take us from our home and lock us up in cages in the jungle, so why
should we do it to them. Imagine the problems that could come from taking these animals away from their natural habitat. Always having the thought in
their head that they are never going back home. This would drive me insane and it probably drives them insane, too. Therefore, Animals should be set
free in their natural habitats, because keeping them in zoos is causing their health to go decline. Saving animals is one objective, but placing an animal
in captivity is another. The animals are aware of their surroundings and probably remember where they came from. Just because animals cannot speak,
it doesn't mean that they don't understand what is going on. So, when placing an animal in a thousand square foot cage, compared to their ... Show more

Living in these zoos, the zookeepers are feeding and taking care of these animals, which is the eradication of their self–reliance. So, animals that are
living or are born in captivity lose their instincts to survive progressively each day. In an article from National Geographic News, researcher Kristen
Jule says, "Their lack of hunting skills and lack of fear towards humans are major disadvantages" (Owen). Unfortunately, since these animals lose or
don't develop natural hunting and survival skills, they will most likely die in the wild. So, letting the animals free might pose an enormous problem,
how are they going to survive without these necessary

Animals' cages in captivity is sufficient for an animals to have the freedom that it need. Animals only have to be placed in "sufficient" cages that meet
certain regulations in disregards to the animals needs (Blanchard 93). Many animals are not given the luxury of roaming free but are subjected to a
space not qualified for their needs.
Natural instincts are a key part of an animal's everyday life. Without being in the wild animals are deprived of their ability to express their natural
instincts as they would in the wild. Animals have the natural instinct to hunt and being in a enclosed place their instincts become dormant (Kurtycz 2).

Animal Captivity Dilemma
The Dilemma of Animal Captivity Animal captivity is an extremely important, and often overlooked problem that we, as human beings, have placed on
nature and the animals that live in the endangered environment. There are groups of people worldwide who are extremely against animal captivity
because of the drastic and permanent effects it leaves on the animals. These ideas of hatred against animal captivity are expressed in small ways such
as posting a picture on Instagram that represents animal cruelty in captivity. Another way these ideas can be expressed is through large
representations such as movies. Films such as Jurassic World and Blackfish are prime examples of this. Both of these films are representing the
severe repercussions that can come from keeping large, dangerous animals in captivity. Though Jurassic World is a fictional movie, it is able to send
the message that having animals that are dangerous in captivity is something that is very dangerous. Blackfish offers a real and terrifying glimpse into
what happens to the mindset of animals who are put into captivity and the threat that those animals pose to not only other animals in captivity but also
the humans who are in charge of looking after these animals. This problem of taking animals away from their natural habitat and placing them in
captivity is a prime example of how humanity is trying to assert itself as dominant of everything else. Mankind has thought of itself as a "protector" of
the wild animals by

unnaturally. Even under the best circumstances at the best of zoos, captivity cannot be compared to their natural habitat. Animals are prevented from

(Katherine Glosser). Polar bears cover 31,000 square miles in their habitat searching for food. In a zoo they are living in an area that is one millionth
the size smaller than they belong in. Being in a small area causes the polar bear to stress and pace.(Katherine Glosser). Animals such as giraffes
and zebras were designed, and are built, to run across miles of the safari, which is something they cannot do in captivity. A whale travels up to 100
miles a day, and can go 1,000 feet deep. At SeaWorld a pool is only 27.6 feet deep. Many visitors at SeaWorld have noticed that the orcas dorsal fin
is floppy when it is supposed to be straight up. That is due to the small space and sadness the whale has. (Katherine Glosser). In captivity, these
whales can only swim in endless circles in tanks that are equivalent to bathtubs, and they don't even come close to being the space they need for any
natural behavior. They are forced to perform meaningless tricks and often taken away from family members when they're shuffled between parks. Most

Taking a family trip to the zoo with the kids generally entails a day of bright grins and exotic entertainment. Children feast their beady eyes on the
foreign animals showcased, in awe at their fascinating performances. Despite the exhilaration generated at these locations, people fail to realize the
gruesome reality that occurs behind the scenes of zoo. Although animal captivity provides amusement and is said to be educational, it remains to be a
cruel practice that should require stricter regulation because of the inhumane circumstances that zoos subject the animals to. Zoos claim to be for
educational purposes, but in actuality they only serve as a means for entertainment. The informational signs posted throughout the zoo meant to educate

Most children cannot help but jump and squeal in overwhelming joy as their parents drive them to the zoo. Since children continuously observe a
diverse, unknown world that nonetheless mesmerizes them, they would not shrug in cold apathy if they saw a large trumpeting grey elephant. As
children grow into adults, they recall the moments when their parents walked together with them in Animal Kingdom. Parents take their children to
zoos and amusement parks to provide their children an enjoyable experience. Nevertheless, the zoo is also where a few children will discover their
greatest passion. A young girl's fascination with koalas may inspire her to educate a future generation of visitors on the research developed on the
effects deforestation have on koalas. Animal activists argue that zoos exploit animals for the sole sake of entertainment, but zoos actually serve a far
more fundamental purpose in our society.
Animals that have been born in the wild but are caught and kept captivity will have difficulty adapting to their new surroundings. They are being
held captive, and they do not have the freedom they once had. This also depends on the species of the animal (some animals are not going to respond
aggressively, while some of them will respond in an undesirable way). (However, even under the best care possible, animals do not behave... Show

It makes sense to give people a glimpse into the animal world once in awhile, maybe even in hope to slow down the risk of endangerment. What
doesn't make sense and is not in any way reasonable are the use of circus animals. The reason circus animals came to be is that zookeepers realized
what a drive people have to see exotic animals. They realized how much money people would pay just to see an exotic animal in a cage, then imagined
what they could earn by making them perform. What people need to realize when they buy their tickets to the show is that these animals are not in any
way meant to perform. And even though these animals are often protected by state and local anticruelty laws, they aren't often enough. The Ringling
Brothers, for example celebrated their 146th year recently even after being accused multiple times of abuse. It has been documented that The Ringling

Essay On Animal Captivity
Jess Ramsey English 3 16 May 2017 Captive Creatures–Yay or Nay? The issue on whether or not to keep animals in captivity has been debated heavily
for a long time. With species such as the panda on the verge of extinction to mistreatment of marine mammals in theme parks such as Sea World,
keeping wild animals under the care of humans has been a struggle and a highly controversial topic. Even though many people believe that animals
should not be kept in captivity because humans are incapable of fully understanding and providing specific needs for wild animals, certain animals
can be kept happy and healthy in captivity, and these animals are an important educational tool for teaching people of all ages about biology,
biodiversity, and the ecosystems of the world. For one thing, many animals in captivity are animals that were found sick or injured, and are being
nursed back to health. Danielle Pucillo, a previous volunteer at a zoo, states, "the zoo where I volunteered rehabilitated various birds of prey,... Show

According to Savannah Miller, another author, animals born in captivity are not able to return to the wild. Miller states, "From the first minute of life,
animals born in captivity are exposed to humans and captive–animal care customs. Because of brain development patterns and learned behaviors during
infancy, captive infants do not have the ability to survive in their natural habitats. Release creates anxiety for the animal, as they cannot acclimate to the
'foreign' environment, and eventually they perish either by predation or exposure. By keeping them in captivity we save them from certain death." Of
course, this could lead to an argument against breeding animals in captivity, but many of the captive–born animals are likely born unintentionally.
Releasing captive–born animals into the wild may end with them going right back to captivity, as one of the sick or injured animals in need of

The Importance Of Animals In Captivity
Animals in captivity are denied the key elements needed to mentally grow and physically evolve as a species. Zoos are solely responsible for taking
animals from their natural habitats and placing them in small enclosures where they are not able to live healthier and fulfilling lives that they were to
live if not for being captured. Zoos are unable to provide proper habitats that replicate an animal's natural habitat, this can lead the animals to develop
harmful diseases such as arthritis due improper climates that are fatal to certain animals, or even neurotic diseases caused by deprivation. Zoos are not
suitable to fit the needs of wildlife, as they produce negative effects on an animal's physical health and jeopardize its psychological state.
The small enclosure that zoos provide to its captives lacks the ability to replicate an animal's natural habitat which threatens a species physical health.

Banning Animals In Captivity
Many people think we should ban animals in captivity, and others may think we should not ban the animals. Honestly we should not ban animals.
There's plenty of reasons why we should not ban animals from zoos and other exhibits. In "Myth And Reality" it says as long as the animals are kept in
captivity they are suppose to get treated humanly, because studies have shown that animals suffer mentally, emotionally, and even physically. It also
says that zoos claim to teach visitors about the wild life conservation and habitat protection. Its not so much that the animals aren't in their natural
habitat because the zoos make their large cages look and seem like if they are in their natural habitat. On the other hand people think we should ban the

Importance Of Animals In Captivity
Almost every human being has been to a zoo or an aquarium. Everyone has seen how the animals are in small cages and people enjoy watching
them not even caring to take into consideration how the animal may feel. But then who cares right? It is fun to go to a zoo and an aquarium and
have a family day and spend money at these institutions not caring what is really going on around them. Animals really suffer by being in a captive
environment. To be captive means to be confined to only one place, I personally would not like to be confined to one area my whole life. Although
some people may argue that zoos save endangered species by placing them in a captive environment, safe from poacher, starvation, and predators.
Animals should not be captive. Animals should be free instead of being captive for human enjoyment and profit because animals have rights,
animals in captivity suffer from stress, confinement, and boredom, and when zoos become overpopulated some zoos will outright kill the surplus of
animals. First of all, taking an animal out of their natural habitat to be held in tanks and cages is extremely cruel. Animals should have some sort of
rights. Animals should have the right to not be held captive for public enjoyment and profit. According to Bob Oraboana, " Every conscious being has
interests that should be respected. No being who is conscious of being alive should be devalued to thinghood, dominated, used as a resource or a
commodity." What Bob is saying is

Wild Animals In Captivity

  • 1. Wild Animals In Captivity Most wild animals that are unable to survive in the wild are kept in zoos and animal rescues. However, when wild animals are kept in captivity for too long it can lead to some odd behaviors and health issues. Some of the issues animals can develop in captivity are over grooming, pacing back and forth, and zoochosis. These can cause animals to develop odd behaviors that can lead to dangerous health issues and sometimes even death. One of the most popular behaviors that animals develop in captivity is over grooming. Some of the signs of over grooming is excessive licking or bald spots. Animals normally over groom themselves due to boredom. It can cause an animal to lose their fur which is very dangerous for them since their fur ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is seen a lot at zoos and is normally considered an animal trying to get attention. However, this is not why animals are pacing back and forth. In fact, it is actually a sign of stress, boredom, lack of exercise, and bad nutrition. This is mostly caused by a small exhibit or cages that do not allow an animal to be able to run around as it would in the wild or find its own food. Kathleen N. Morgan and Chris T. Tromborg writes "In another study of zoo–housed leopards, overall activity was suppressed when visitors were present, and large increases in visitor numbers resulted in increased pacing (Mallapur and Chellam, 2002), a behavioral indicator of agitation or stress" (1). Pacing back and forth in animals can also lead to zoochosis. Zoochosis is caused by animals being in cages or small enclosures, lack of exercise and ability to keep their minds active. Animals with zoochosis will act strange, such as biting on the bars of their enclosure, hurting themselves and others. A number of symptoms can suggest that an animal is suffering from a psychological problem however zoochosis is something a zoo keeper does not want an animal to develop. In most cases once an animal develops zoochosis and they are unable to cure the animals they will need to put down which is why it is very important for the animal to not develop ... • 2. Exotic Animals In Captivity People around the world have been to a zoo and saw all the animals in their artificial habitats. Most have been told that some of the animals are not native in the area, knowing that they've been able to see and learn about a non–native animal they would say that they are fascinated to see such a creature. Although there are some people who would disagree with animals in captivity is wrong, which is why these pieces of evidence claim otherwise. Supporters of this topic believe that animals in captivity helps saves animals from extinction. Leslie–Ann Rush, an animal lover who raises exotic animals, believes that by caring for these captive–bred creatures she is doing her part to help keep lemurs alive on Earth, and she cares for her animals with a profound commitment that consumes her days and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some exotic–animal owners spend thousands a year on fresh meat, for carnivores that dine daily on raw steak, for primates–omnivores with complex dietary needs for snakes, which eat rat after rat. A four–year–old was mauled by a mountain lion his aunt kept as a pet, a 55–year–old woman's face disfigured by her friends lifelong chimpanzee, and an 80–year–old man attacked by a 200–pound kangaroo(Wild Obsession). Although my opponents believe that exotic animals don't make good pets, this isn't valid because, exotic animals are special and are supposed to be hard to take care of. Instead, we should let people with the knowledge to care for these animals, take care of them as pets because, like Leslie–Ann Rush, she actually knows how to care for her exotic animals. In the end, I believe that animals in captivity is good, because it helps fund organizations, saves animals from extinction, and helps educate people. We all should educate ourselves on exotic animals and their needs, we should also force permits to keep/capture exotic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Are Animals In Captivity Or Inhumane? Firstly, wild animals in captivity is inhumane. Animals in zoos are often thought of as objects instead of living beings with feelings and emotions. An example of a situation that was inhumane and proves that zoos care more about income than animals took place at the Copenhagen zoo where an 18–month–old, healthy giraffe was killed because it was considered useless for breeding. According to an article by www.peta.org "Even large, well–known, and popular zoos engage in unscrupulous practices, such as dumping unwanted animals or taking animals from the wild." Because most of these animals were raised or born in captivity, they were not able to develop the necessary survival skills needed to survive in the wild. These are a few of the multiple examples of how zoos are inhumane, and are not beneficial for animals.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One example of an animal that has proved to have a longer life span in the wild is African elephants. According to an article by National Geographic, "For African elephants, the median life span is 17 years for zoo–born females, compared to 56 years in the Amboseli National Park population." Another example of an animal with a shorter life expectancy in zoos than in the wild are killer whales. According to an article by www.whalefacts.org both female and male killer whales have a reduced life expectancy in captivity. Female killer whales live to be about 70–80 years old in the wild, but only live to about 50 in captivity. Male killer whales live to be about 50–60 years old in the wild, but only live to their 30's in captivity. Animals have been used for entertainment purposes in both the past and present. The total number of animals in captivity for the sake of entertainment of humans is 751,931. There are many different types of Animal abuse. Some examples of different types of animal abuse are poor living conditions, inhumane rearing practices or purposeful execution of violent and harmful acts against the animals, such as, dog fighting. Some major contributors to animal cruelty around the world are, animal testing, fishing and slaughterhouses. Animals in captivity are forced to perform silly tricks under... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When elephants are in a zoo, they can't travel long distances, in fact, the amount they can move can barely be named as worthy of travel." (List of Pros and Cons of Zoos). Experts, scientists, and researchers who study elephants in the wild strongly opposed a similar capture in 2003, stating, Taking elephants from the wild is not only traumatic for them, it is also detrimental to their health. We believe the time has come to consider them as sentient beings and not as so much money on the hoof to be captured and sold and displayed for our own use. (Zoos: Pitiful ... • 5. Animals Should Not Be Held Captivity Jennifer Smith McGowen English 4 20 October 2017 Animals Should Not Be Held in Captivity Animal captivity has been an ongoing debate for over 60 years. There should be no question about whether animal captivity is wrong. "Hundreds of thousands of wild animals across the world are snatched from natural habitats, forced into captivity and subjected to abuse, both mentally and physically, in the name of entertainment and profit." (World Animal Protection 1) Places such as the circus use abusive training methods such as, hooks, chains, whips, electric rods, and blunt instruments. (Born Free USA 1) Animals deserve to live freely in the wild. Their freedom is taken away the moment they are put in a cage. When animals are brought into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In captivity, dolphins are trained to beach themselves so people can pet or kiss them, but if they stay in that position too long, they will slowly crush their internal organs. In captivity, dolphins are trained through food deprivation and are given food when they perform tricks. When dolphins wave to you, they are hungry and expect food. (World Animal Protection 1) Animals are sometimes given little to no food and water, which are necessities for survival! Animals are often crammed into cages for long periods of time. Them being trapped in such a small place stresses them out and can hurt them physically. Animals in captivity are prone to stress. They show signs of stress through pacing, swaying, and unnatural behavior. One major sign that dolphins show that is considered "unnatural behavior" would be their activities. In the wild, dolphins spend 80% of their time below the surface playing, hunting, exploring, etc. In captivity, dolphins spend 80% of their time above water. (World Animal Protection 1) The second reason animals should not be held in captivity is because the exhibits they live in are too small and not natural to them. Zoos do not provide animals with the proper habitats they need to survive. The habitats are designed to imitate the animal's natural habitat, but are usually not natural. There are large animals, such as, elephants, that do not have the large space they need. Animals that are in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Animals In Captivity Should animals live in their natural environment, or should they live in man made environment? Some people believe animals should live in captivity, but animals that live in the wild get to live more naturally. They should live in the wild instead of living in captivity, so they are not tampered with by humans as much. It would keep the environment the way it should be. If you take predators out of an environment, the environment will be over run with other animals because the other animals population will not be controlled. Animals should live in the wild and not in captivity. Animals should live in the wild including endangered animals, instead of captivity. Some people believe animals should be taken care of in captivity because it is to dangerous for them in the wild. Animals do not truly belong in a cage. It is not fair for the animal to live in captivity because the animal would not be able to roam freely like it could if it lived in the wild. If an animal can not make it in the wild, it needs to either adapt to the wild or die which is a way of the population controlling itself. Animals are meant to live in the wild. Once you put a animal in captivity and then decide to release it, the animal will probably die because it does not know how to hunt for food, and will not be able to defend itself against other animals. If animals do not have enough room to roam around, they can become sick and depressed.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nevertheless, the professor opposes the text book and says that they are serious problems to keep animals in zoos and animals' parks. Also, he refutes each of the author's reasons. First of all, the reading passage avers that animals would obtain the health and psychological treatment in captivity, which will improve their health. While, the professor counters this point and explains that even though animals receive care from professionals in zoos, animals live in limited space, which leads to psychological stress. However, there are 751, 931 animals in Accredited Institutions as of 2017, and some of these institutions can be very harmful to the animals. Animal Captivity, such as in zoos and aquariums, prevents animals from receiving necessities they need in order to survive or live a healthy life. This cruel mistreatment can have multiple effects on the animals such as; starvation, sham chewing, and self–mutilation. Starvation is a harsh factor that can occur for various species in captivity. Many say it is inhumane, or they don't believe that the wild animals could ever adapt to living as a pet. Supporters say that animals in captivity is a good thing for many reasons but three main reasons are because it saves injured and endangered animals, it is a good education opportunity, it is good for the economy. These animals can suffer severe psychological disorders from being out of their natural environment. But others argue that keeping these animals in captivity will help keep endangered species alive. It is said that advancements are being made to improve elephant environments in captivity, but numerous zoos have shut down their elephant attractions (Smith, 2008). Many people are attracted to keeping wild animals as pets. They believe the wild animals to be interesting and exciting. At a young age, the animals may seem easier to tame, but the older these animals get, the more aggressive they tend to become. Many problems can develop from keeping a wild animal as a pet. Wild animals have specific needs that have to be met, in order for them to prosper. "Only the most exceptional zoos and wildlife centers provide a living area that somewhat resembles the natural habitat of these animals, but it is virtually impossible to provide sufficient space for larger species"(CFHS). In captivity animals do not lose their wild instincts. They can be extremely unpredictable, and if provoked they can cause severe harm to people. Some wild animals, such as reptiles and hedgehogs can actually carry bacteria called salmonella, which is very easily transmitted to humans. Exotic animals can be very social, and need to have a companion of the same species living with them. If the animal is kept isolated from its kind, then it can suffer psychologically (CFHS). • 11. Essay On Animal Captivity Imagine families going to a zoo, children are amazed by the different kinds of animals and learning many things about each animal. The children are having a blast and the parents are glad to see the smiles on their faces and seeing animals that could be seen at any time without it being a once in a lifetime experience especially for the rare and exotic animals. Unfortunately, the same feeling couldn't be said for the animals. These animals are trapped in displays and couldn't experience the wild like they used to or never experience it at all. Over time, they experience defects that made them depressed or aggressive. Animal Captivity has been a heated debate for years and still continues to this day. Zoos have downside with the effects on the animals and why resorts would be the best option for animals. One reason why animal captivity isn't a good idea for animals is the mental damage it cause being a confined a one area for decades. That animal remembers is being with their family members one minute and suddenly being taken away and put into a zoo and perform for many years. In today's world, millions of animals are feeling this way right now, a feeling no living creature can endure. Animals are living creatures whose sole purpose in life are to survive and thrive. Whose right is it to stop and change that for them. In captivity animals are treated badly, they have the potential to hurt humans, and they weren't originally supposed to be in captivity in the first place. These beautiful creatures of Mother Earth should be cared for, not used as slaves. • 13. Stop Animal Captivity Why We Should Put an End to Animal Captivity In May 2016, a critically endangered gorilla was shot dead by zoo officials after a young child slipped into its enclosure. The incident created an uproar, with the public debating either the mother's parenting skills or the justification of killing in an emergency situation. The public outrage was of no avail, to an incarcerated animal who had no choice but to die at a place it never belonged. It is now more crucial than ever to question the relevancy of keeping animals captive in zoos and aquariums. Historically, people have collected and kept various animals as status symbols. Many of these "prized collections" were later transformed into public zoos during the 19th century. What began as a private area for zoological study, thezoo eventually became a popular destination for a picnic and entertainment. In those days, animals were confined to small cages, an alienating environment far cry from the open wilderness. Many people liken zoos to a paradise for animals – a blissful place where animals are not compelled to struggle for food or run away from predators. If that were the case, given the chance, animals wouldn't have escaped from their captivity in numerous instances. A series of recent events has the general pubic asking them selves if animals should be allowed to be in captivity. You can find many people on both sides I chose to talk about the positive side about putting animals in captivity. Animals should be able to live in zoos because they live longer, they live in a better environment and they get feed better. Animals should live in zoos because they live longer. • 18. Animal And The Presentation Of Captivity The panthers advocate, our observatory narrator, acts almost as a conduit. The title gives implications of a third person narrative, yet Rilke channels the animals emotional state also, affirming how "He feels...".The speakers attempt to steal the "gaze" of the restrained feline's "misted" vision, is convincing. Although misted, we are given a clear insight, of the monotonous and bound lifestyle of the undomesticated cat. We are informed that the panther is so powerless behind the bars, to the point of belief that there is no freedom "beyond them..." Powerless to the point, that even his strength has become paralysed. It is therefore apposite to examine the characterisation of the animal and the presentation of captivity that we are challenged by. The poem is permeated by literary techniques, standing as obvious signposts planted by Rilke, which spell out captivity. We are lured by the very first line, due to a confession that the panther "can take in nothing more." The lack of hope and signs of weakness, immediately pull the strings in our hearts, evoking a reaction. This is formed by a very distinct device, the helpless tone used by Rilke, a tone which longs for freedom and the reassuring of hope; Appearing also as a persuasive plea; we hear there is "nothing more" as there is "no more world". Rilke therefore cries on behalf of the panther who cannot speak for himself. The heavy accumulation of vision brings no surprise as to why imagery is arguably, the most effective device ... • 20. The Captivity Of Wild Animals The captivity of wild animals has been a highly debated topic for many years. Zoos and aquariums are huge attractions and can be found all over the world. Movies such as Black Fish and Unlocking the Cage showcase some of the troubling behaviors animals in captivity portray. Advocates for animal rights can use these movies to push their agenda and people who oppose these films say they are forms of propaganda. The fact of the matter is that it does not matter what side of the argument that you are on it cannot be denied that these moves spark mass discussion. The question can be asked are animals places on this earth for our amusement and entertainment or they here that we may cohabit with all aspects of life. Science has proven that some animals have shown signs of distress while being in captivity. So what affects could captive animals have on experiments; validity, reliability, and replicability. Validity can be affected when researchers introduce abnormal animals into the experiment. Organizations such as The Animal Welfare Institution, Captive Animals' Protection Society, ENDCAP, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals organization all help protect animal rights, abuse, cruelty, suffering and, captivity. Animals should not be held in captivity, because not only is it dangerous for humans, it can also cause animals to suffer physically and suffer psychologically. There have been many occurrences where trainers have been either attacked or killed by an animal held in captivity. SeaWorld trainers such as Keltie Byrne and Dawn Brancheau were victims of a well known Orca held in captivity named, Tilikum. Trainer Keltie Byrne was pulled to the bottom of the enclosure by Tilikum, tossed around among the three orcas, and ultimately drowned ("Over 30 Years and Three Deaths: Tilikum's Tragic Story.") Meanwhile, Dawn Brancheau had a more tragic death. Tilikum scalped, dismembered and broke the bones of Dawn, who was then drowned afterward. It began in the 1960s, when corporations such as SeaWorld, captured wild animals from their natural habitats. However, the issue with orcas being held captive is still an issue today. There is animal captivity all around the world, but the issue at SeaWorld, is one of many documentaries, articles and speeches, made to fight the neglect towards orcas in SeaWorld. SeaWorld's entertainment has caused arguments and disagreements since the 60s. In Canada, back when there was a place called Sea Land, there was a brutal method they used to capture the orcas. The first thing they did was to go out on a boat, see a mother and her baby, then corner them. Take the calf away from the mother, then throw them in little rings, separated from each other, confined in their own areas. They capture them from just being out in the open, or their taken from other places, or bred in Captivity. From that park, it got shut down, but all of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 27. The Importance Of Life In Captivity For Animals Life in captivity for animals is comparable in some situations to humans living inside of a prison. The restrictions that are imposed on these animals while in captivity are unbearable living conditions that affect the animal both mentally and physically. The animals understand that this is not their home which leads to the breakdown of their psyche. One example of this comes from a zoo in the United Kingdom. In the year 1979, the Bristol Zoo gained a new animal which would become one of their biggest attractions. Misha the male polar bear caught the eye of the public with his unusual and odd behavior. Researchers that studied animal rights in the late twentieth century linked this behavior to Misha's enclosure at the zoo. Researchers came to the conclusion that the prison–like living conditions that Misha encountered was the cause of his psychotic appearance. The public had described him as looking like a beast who was breaking down as a result of the captivity instead of an average polar bear in a zoo. The zoo was able to view Misha through surveillance during this entire process, similar to humans living in a prison or an asylum. According to the article by Andrew Flack, "Following media attention from animal rights organizations and the media between 1985 and the early 1990s, Misha's 'psychotic' appearance in a repeatedly evoked image of the prisons and asylums of the past, where surveillance, spectacle, and suffering collided to alter the natures of the 'beasts' within" ... Animal Captivity Dilemma The Dilemma of Animal Captivity Animal captivity is an extremely important, and often overlooked problem that we, as human beings, have placed on nature and the animals that live in the endangered environment. There are groups of people worldwide who are extremely against animal captivity because of the drastic and permanent effects it leaves on the animals. These ideas of hatred against animal captivity are expressed in small ways such as posting a picture on Instagram that represents animal cruelty in captivity. Another way these ideas can be expressed is through large representations such as movies. Films such as Jurassic World and Blackfish are prime examples of this. Both of these films are representing the severe repercussions that can come from keeping large, dangerous animals in captivity. Though Jurassic World is a fictional movie, it is able to send the message that having animals that are dangerous in captivity is something that is very dangerous. Blackfish offers a real and terrifying glimpse into what happens to the mindset of animals who are put into captivity and the threat that those animals pose to not only other animals in captivity but also the humans who are in charge of looking after these animals. Since children continuously observe a diverse, unknown world that nonetheless mesmerizes them, they would not shrug in cold apathy if they saw a large trumpeting grey elephant. As children grow into adults, they recall the moments when their parents walked together with them in Animal Kingdom. Parents take their children to zoos and amusement parks to provide their children an enjoyable experience. Nevertheless, the zoo is also where a few children will discover their greatest passion.
