Physical Activity The government guidelines on physical activity: Early childhood aged 5 and below – Babies should be encouraged by their parents to
be active throughout the day, such as babies should move their body, head and limbs by stretching, pushing and pulling. The baby should do these
activities before they begin to crawl. Toddlers who can walk on their own should be active for about 180 minutes per day, this activity can include

Tobacco 's Burden Of Disease Essay
1. Tobacco's "burden of disease"
Tobacco use is widespread and has a heavy "burden of disease". According to the U.S. department of Health and Human Services [HHS], tobacco use
is related to over 443,000 Americans death each year and has caused approximately 8,860,000 related illnesses (2016). Thus causing it to have a higher
mortality rate than "HIV, illegal drug use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined.Tobacco use is thus one of the Nation's deadliest and
most costly public health challenges" (HHS, 2016). Tobacco can cause the onset of multiple diseases, for example, cancer, cardiovasculardisease,
asthma, COPD, pregnancy complications, SIDS, and oral diseases (HHS, 2016). The prevalence of tobacco use has been gradually decreasing since
the nineteen sixty's, but even today tobacco use is quite common.
2. The course of the disease: the concepts of incidence, prevalence, and case–fatality.
The concepts of the course of disease are not fully relevant to the subject of tobacco, but can be examined and applied in part. The concept of
incidence is the rate of chance that a disease occurs over a period time (Riegelman & Kirkwood, 2015, p. 298). In other words, it is the rate of new
cases of a disease. For tobacco use, over two thousand teens and young adults become daily smokers each day in the United States (CDC, 2015). The
concept of prevalence in public health is the proportion of those within a population at a set period of time that are afflicted

To Smoke or Not to Smoke in Public Essay
To Smoke or Not To Smoke in Public People have strong feelings concerning smoking in public places. Whether you are in favor of or in opposition
to it, smoking in public places is a serious concern that need be addressed. I agree that it is unjust for smokers not to be allowed to smoke where they
choose, but it is even more unreasonable for non smokers to be subjected to breathing in the exhaled smoke form someone else(passive smoking). Not
to mention second–hand smoke is actually worse for someone than smoking itself. Along with the dangers second–hand smoke presents to the adults,
think about what it does not only to your children but other children around you. Smokers may argue that non smokers can just as easily walk away as

Second–hand smoke increases a person's chances of getting coronary disease by up to thirty percent. Second–hand smoke also raises the chances of
lung and other types of cancer. Each year there are approximately 53,000 deaths from lung cancer and respiratory problems and 25,000 of them are from
non smokers. Although that is a long term issue, there are more issues that present themselves instantly. Itchy eyes, runny nose, coughing, hives, and
excessive phlegm are just a few.
As parents, it is our job to protect our children and that includes the unseen dangers of second–hand smoke. Some of the dangers to children include
asthma, lower respiratory illness, middle ear infections, reduced lung growth or sudden infant death syndrome. When children are developing, and are
subjected to passive smoking (second–hand smoke), their lung and brain function can be stunted. Middle ear infections can be painful to children and if
left untreated can cause permanent damage to their hearing. Even just short exposure of second–hand smoke to children can cause lifelong illnesses for
them.
Those earlier mentioned things are just the medical reasons for not allowing smoking in public. Children should not be penalized for the bad
decisions of adults. For instance children may not be able to play sports or outdoor activities if smoking in public is not completely banned. A lot of

the suitability of different investment strategies should be driven by the client profile in terms of risk tolerance, liquidity requirements, time horizon

Essay on The Debate Concerning Secondhand Smoke
We all know that smoking poses a significant risk to our health. We can make an educated decision about whether or not to smoke, and if we do
decide to smoke, we should be willing to accept any negative effects such as lung cancer and heart disease later in our lives. But what about exposure
to secondhand smoke? At this point, we don't always have a choice in exposure to the smoke of others. The Office of the Surgeon General (OGS) has
documented a high level of exposure to secondhand smoke among nonsmoking adults and children in the United States. Blood tests of nonsmokers for
the presence of cotinine, a chemical produced by nicotine, indicate that 88% of nonsmoking Americans are exposed to secondhand smoke (US, OGS,
Clean).

The EPA determined that secondhand smoke is a Group A carcinogen, a classification of pollutants that have been proven to cause cancer. The tobacco
industry responded to the report with a well–funded advertising, public relations, and legal counterattack. Since then, controversy over the topic has
spread, both politically and socially. But what exactly are the risks associated with secondhand smoke, and how has the American public responded to
those risks?
Secondhand smoke is most harmful to young children, especially those with asthma or other respiratory diseases. The EPA notes that 43% of children
in the United States under the age of 11 live in a home with at least one smoker. Children exposed to secondhand smoke tend to have more bronchitis,
pneumonia, respiratory infections, fluid in the middle ear, and asthma. And if both parents smoke, or if the child is frequently exposed to smoke, the
child's chances of showing symptoms of these diseases increase (US, EPA, Indoor).
Infants and toddlers up to 18 months of age suffer between 150,000 and 300,000 cases of lung infections because of secondhand smoke, according to
EPA estimates. Secondhand smoke produces symptoms of asthma in an

This model is an expansion of the CAPM and it includes two additional variables, taking into account size and book to market factors, as
explanatory variables expressed within the model as SMB and HML. The Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and Fama & French's three
factors model are both models account for the expected returns for stock albeit using different variables to distinguish and add reliability to the
predictions of these estimated returns. However, the CAPM uses only one factor to determine the riskiness of the marketplace, Beta, whereas Fama
& French expands on this model, incorporate another two factors to establish the risk, Small minus Big (SMB) and High Minus Low (HML),
which take into account the relationships between market and share size. Hence, in Fama & French's findings, stocks with higher beta did not
always perform better. The Three Factor Model is indeed preferred at predicting the returns of stocks, in correlation with each models risk factor.
Moreover, although small stocks outperform large stocks in the past several years, we should not expect small stocks to outperform large stocks in the
future, because, in the future stock market, there're quite a lot uncertainty, either, we might find the situation that a small stock can only outperform a

Barbieri There are many options for buying a group of securities in one product. The most popular ones are mutual funds, segregated funds and
exchange traded funds. What they have in common is that these products are an easy way to buy a group of securities at once instead of buying
each security individually. The fund can also proportion the securities so you the individual investor does not have to. There are two main
classifications for what type of fund you can purchase in terms of costs. It is important to know how these costs work so you can avoid paying too
much for this convenience. These products differ in terms of how they are administered, access to the products and their costs. Active Versus Passive
Investing Before getting into which of the products are suitable for you, there are some aspects that need to be considered so that you understand what
the variations are among the products. Active investing is when someone (a portfolio manager) picks the stocks that are in the fund and decides how
much of each one to hold (the weighting).

Smokers in the U.K and U.S.A and the treatment of social pariahs
In recent years, antismoking campaigns has increased due to the harmful effects that are caused by smoking. People smoke not caring about the
consequences that it has not only on them, but also on other people. In the U.K and U.S.A, campaign might or might not be effective. This essay seeks
to illustrate the cause and effect of antismoking campaigns, T.V advertising, campaigns against smokers not being allowed N.H.S treatment, and the
ban of smoking in public places and also illustrating the reasons why similar campaigns will not be effective in Saudi Arabia. First, the causes of
antismoking campaigns and T.V advertising will be discussed. Then, the effects of these T.V advertising and antismoking campaigns will be
demonstrated. Finally, the reasons as to why similar campaign would not be effective in Saudi Arabia will be analysed.
There are many reasons as to why antismoking campaigns and T.V advertising are growing and expanding worldwide. Smoking does not only affect
health, but also affects the environment and non–smokers. The first cause is health. Many individuals smoke not caring about the harm and dangers
that it might do to them. Some argue that they are physically addicted to smoking and others are just ignorant about the whole thing. Smoking can
cause harm to a person's body. It can cause fatigue and worsen activities which acquire walking, jogging, and other physical activities. For example,

Biological Effects from Exposure to Second-Hand Smoke
Recently, there has been a lot of up–to–date evidence dealing with biological effects from exposure to second–hand smoke. A lot of people aren't
educated about this topic, but second–hand smoke can harm someone almost as much as someone who actually smokes, depending on how often he
/she is around it. Young children are a huge target for this subject because many biological and medical researchers have found second–hand smoke
causing lifetime damage, and many other negative effects to children as they grow. Smoking bans in certain areas around the world has caused the
number of children's hospital visits for asthma to drop significantly (Louis 1). Children are also greatly affected by second–hand smoke and some
parents do not realize the harm that they are causing to their young children. Young children are growing fast and their lungs are also growing very fast
and second–hand smoke can seriously damage their lungs temporarily or even permanently. Children can't walk away from second–hand smoke, either
because they are too young to walk or their parents won't let them. When children are riding in the back of a car and an adult decides they want to
smoke, the child or children have no other choice but to breathe in the thick, chemical filled smoky air. "16 percent of the world's population is
covered by comprehensive smoke–free laws, and 40 percent of children worldwide are routinely exposed to second–hand smoke" (Louis 2). With the

Anti Tobacco Advertisements And Effects On Quitting...
In the article "Recall of Anti–Tobacco Advertisements and Effects on Quitting Behavior: Results from the California Smokers Cohort" the authors try
to research if anti–tobacco television advertisements with personal message can be recall by the person and have a greater impact on smoking
cessation. The authors felt that this was an important topic to study because they were concern about the dangers of smoking tobacco. According to Leas
et al. (2015) "Nondaily smoking and second–hand smoke exposure can lead to the same negative health consequences that result from daily
smoking"(p.90). As a result, the authors engage in a cohort study where they use anti–tobacco advertisements to see which advertisement has a greater
recall on smokers, and haves greater effect on smoking cessation.
The authors engage in a Cohort study, because this study is being observed for a long period of time and data is being collected from a group of
people who are current smokers. The researchers are testing what happens to the person that has been expose to a particular anti–tobacco ad. There are
4 ads; Stages, Don't stop fighting, Trapped, and The Emerging Men. The specific kinds of data the authors use to answer their research questions was
the follow ups and the interviews. These data was collected through advertisement recall, quitting behavior, and covariates. The advertisement recall,

Smart Bet An Approach For Investing?
'Smart Beta' an Approach to Investing?
The term 'Smart Beta' is a catchy title for an increasingly significant approach relating to exchange traded products (ETPs). Particularly its potential
ability to outperform standard benchmark indexes has resulted in its market appeal and growth. However with its expansion warrants the necessity to
educate investors, in order to understand the suitability, benefits and limitations of this approach.
Limitations with previous approaches?
Before we analyse the foundations of smart beta approach, an understanding of why it has emerged is essential. As with all progressions and new
approaches within the financial industry, the smart beta approach has gained popularity as an alternative due to flaws ... Show more content on

It would then rebalance when needed i.e. buying and selling of stocks, to help revise weightings to reflect changes in the index over time. This result
in an adverse selection as more weighting will continue to be allocated to large companies such as CBA that have a higher price is higher.
On the other end of the spectrum choosing an active approach presents its own issues. Finding consistent performing active fund managers who can
deliver returns greater than the market is very rare. According to Standard & Poor's SPIVA Australia scorecard in 2012, approximately 69 percent of
active retail Australian equity funds failed to beat the S&P/ASX Accumulation index and 72 per cent of active international equity funds failed to beat
the benchmark. This coupled with high premiums charged for active management and lack of transparency in managing processes diminishes the appeal
of active management approach further.
Understanding Smart Beta
The 'smart beta' approach should be more accurately described as 'strategic beta' as it aims on improving the flaws of passive index based approaches.
It has become an umbrella term for alternative weighting and factor based investing. In essence you take an active approach to choosing the rules to
base your fund. But once set, the rules passively

A New Concept
IAQ is not a new concept, consider our ancestors living in caves and the impact from smoke pollutions or in ancient Egypt stonemasons working in the
open air were healthier than those working in workshop. Even Biblical scripts refer to the dangers of mould in the home. However, there have been
four fundamental developments that have occurred in the last forty–five years (Lee, et al., 1996): The increased time spent within indoor environments.
The increased dependency on artificial products (building materials and finishes, scents, furniture). The increased occupancy density (open plan offices,
reduction of working space). Advancements of energy conservation techniques (air tight buildings, re–circulated air, reduced ventilation). A growing
body of scientific evidence has indicated that the air within buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most
industrialized cities. The US's Toxic Substances Strategy Committee stated that the majority of cancers (80–90%) are triggered by exposure to
substances in the environment (Landrigan et al., 2002). According to a 5–year–study carried out by the US Environmental Protection Agency
(Greenfield, 1991), peak concentrations of 20 toxic compounds, some linked with cancer and birth defects, were 200–500 times higher inside than
outdoors. It is necessary to note that these figures are based on US values and there is a need to exhibit caution in applying them directly to the UK in

The Philosophy Of Passive Management
speaking, not true. In particular, it was assumed that the market is in the state of equilibrium (i.e. all investors have finished to complete their
portfolios), operational and transaction costs (payment of intermediaries' services, staff, information services, taxes, etc.) are insignificant, the investor
has the ability to receive and grant loans on the same risk–free rate, and so on. Nevertheless, the idea that the market portfolio is probably close to an
effective portfolio, initiated a passive portfolio management. This strategy means that when the investor prepares the portfolio, determining the
expected return, he is focused entirely on the market portfolio and he doesn't carry on to make any changes in the composition of the portfolio after
its formation. Hence is the name. The philosophy of passive management is to minimize the costs of market research and the formation of the
portfolio if there is sufficient guarantee of obtaining a stable high yield. In fact, an investor, preparing the portfolio, is focused on some reference
portfolio (benchmark portfolio), i.e. portfolio with standard yield in comparison with the actual yield of the portfolio manager. This is not necessarily
to consider as a reference only the market portfolio. There are dozens of different investment funds, called "index" funds, which focus on the
benchmark portfolio, consisting of securities, selected for a particular trait (eg: a part of any index). So, there are index funds holding

Why Tobacco Should Be Banned From The United States Essay
Consumption of Tobacco is a worldwide phenomenon. Nearly every country is planning to raise more restrictions around the consumption of Tobacco.
The awareness about its ill effects is rising through the corridors of Parliaments of many countries with the help of governmental and
non–governmental organizations. There are some internationally recognized organizations like the "World Lung Foundations" that are striving hard to
reduce the consumption of tobacco to a bare minimum. There are numerous reasons that support the argument that tobacco should be completely
banned from the United Sates.
Tobacco consumption is the number one cause of preventable deaths in the United States. In the United States, cigarette smoking is responsible for more
than 480,000 deaths per year. That is around one in five deaths annually only because of smoking. On an average, the person who smokes dies ten
years earlier than a non–smoker. These statistics are not mere numbers but speak about the gravity of the situation. The United States government
should portray a more negative view on Tabaco to save the lives of many people worldwide (Centre for Disease and Prevention, second paragraph).
America has a major debt of over twenty trillion dollars and does not need industries like Tabaco costing them more. There is a huge cost borne by the
Federal and State Governments because of the consumption of tobacco by its citizens. The cost, calculated by the Center for Disease and Prevention, is

Smoking in Public Buildings Should Be Banned
Smoking in Public Buildings Should be Banned Is it true that secondhand smoke can have almost the same health effects as smoking a cigarette? Is it
true that some countries have banned smoking in public buildings already? Is it easy to guess how those bans turned out? The countries that banned
smoking in public buildings are experiencing fewer health problems in their citizens and have had no negative economic effects due to the ban. Even
though everyone should be able to do what they want, where they want if it is not hurting anyone, smoking should be banned in public buildings
because it causes health and environmental problems. Smoking causes health problems for everyone around the world, not just people near smokers.
Most people know that smoking can cause countless health problems; a group of scientists conducted a study showing the effects of secondhand
smoke in nonsmokers. The scientists knew in 2004 that, on a worldwide scale, the health concerns created by exposure to tobacco smoke for
nonsmokers were not well known. They tested people and found the effects from worldwide exposure in children and adults, and these statistics have
probably risen in the past ten years (Г–berg, Jaakkola, Woodward, Peruga, PrГјss–UstГјn). They found that "Worldwide, 40% of children, 33% of male
non–smokers, and 35% of female non–smokers were exposed to second–hand smoke in 2004. This exposure was estimated to have caused 379,000

India 's Ban On Tobacco Advertising
India in 2001 proposed a ban on tobacco advertisement in an effort to curb tobacco use with adolescents. It was met with sharp criticism from the
tobacco industry. However, some saw it as a great move by the government in looking after the welfare of its citizens. I hope to explore in the essay
each side's voice as well as deal with the myriad of issues the government faced upon the bans proposal. Lastly I will give my opinion on what position
the government should take. One the main arguments for this proposed ban was that the tobacco industry was targeting children. In fact citing an
internal documents from the tobacco industry that referred to 14 to 24 year olds as their targets (Reynold, 2010). Recognizing this report for India
was extremely important. Due to the increased health problems of smoking by targeting a younger age bracket they would effectively increase the
weight the government had to carry when it comes to providing health care for its citizens. The government also had in its favor the fact that in all
but one case smoking use by young people had decreased when these bans where put in effect. The government's argument for banning tobacco ads

Smoking Bans Cut Number Of Heart Attacks
Smoking Bans

Smoking Bans cut number of heart attacks, strokes smoking bans quickly and dramatically cut the number of people hospitalized for heart attacks,
strokes and respiratory diseases such as asthma and emphysema. Heart attack hospitalizations fell an average of 15% after communities passed laws
banning smoking in areas such as restaurants, bars and wore places, according to the largest analysis of smoke–free legislation to date. The analysis
included 45 studies covering 33 laws in American cities and states, as well as countries such as New Zealand and Germany. Stroke hospitalizations fell
16%, while hospitalizations for respiratory diseases fell 24%, according to the study, the more comprehensive the law, the greater the impact, says
senior author Stanton Glantz, director of the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California–San Francisco. For
example, a 2002 law banning smoking only in restaurants in Olmsted County, Minn., had no effect on heart attacks, according to a study also
published Monday in the Archives of Internet Medicine. However, heart attacks fell by 33% after a 2007 law that expanded thesmoking ban to all
workplaces, including bars, according to the report, from Minnesota's Mayo Clinic How cigarettes became uncool on campus. It has been about four
months since signs went up all over Northeastern University announcing a smoking ban on school property.

The Role Of Active And Passive Portfolio Strategies And...
Discuss the general features, differences, advantages and disadvantages of active and passive portfolio strategies and their link with the theory of
efficient capital markets.
Introduction and Definitions:
Depending on whether believing in the Efficiency Market Hypothesis, portfolio strategies are classified as either active strategies or passive portfolio
strategies. Active portfolio strategy doesn't believe Efficiency Market Hypothesis, it uses available information and forecasting techniques to seek
better performance than the average market, the aim of this strategy is also known as 'beat the market'. Whereas passive portfolio strategy treats the
market as efficient and believes it is not possible to beat the market returns ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Passive portfolio strategy believes in market efficiency, which means information that affects the markets is available to all investors. Therefore those
who go with this theory accept that there is not possible to consistently beat the market averages. Passive portfolio strategy, which is called index
investing, can only take advantage of the efficient market by using index funds, directly invest in an index. Usually hold each stock in the proportion it
represents of the index, or mathematically from a portfolio of not more than a specified number of stock, which best tracks the index historically.
Rather than the index fund, returns of passive portfolio strategy can be optimized through diversification and asset allocation, and by minimisation of
investment costs and taxes.
Differenceпјљ
Iintuitionally, some difference can be concluded from the features of active and passive portfolio strategies. The objectives of the two strategies are
different. Active portfolio strategy might best be described as an attempt to apply human intelligence to find "good deals" in the financial markets.
(Steven, 2014) The strategy wants to make a profit, achieve outperforming an investment benchmark index. While believing the market efficiency, the
passive portfolio strategy is aimed to obtain a similar market investment performance.
The processes for making reruns of the two strategies are different. Active portfolio

Lung Cancer : The Devastating Disease
Lung Cancer: The Devastating Disease Lung cancer is a disgusting disease that many have died from. It is the largest single cause of cancer deaths in
America. It causes more deaths than colon, breast and pancreatic cancer combined. People shouldn't have to suffer from this disease. We have to
prevent any more cases of lung cancer. What is lung cancer? It is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells that start off in one or both of the lungs.
The abnormal cells do not develop into healthy tissue, they divide rapidly and form into tumors. As tumors become stronger and bigger it undermines
the lungs ability to produce oxygen in the bloodstream.
Now what causes lung cancer? Well the number one leading cause of lung cancer issmoking. According to www.webmd.com ,around ninety percent of
lung cancers arise because of tobacco use. The risk of lung cancer increases with the number of cigarettes over time. Pipe and cigar can also cause
lung cancer, although the risk is not as high as cigarettes. While someone who smokes one pack a day has a risk for the development of lung cancer
that is twenty–five higher than a non–smoker, pipe and cigar smokers have a risk of lung cancer that is about five times that of a non–smoker.
What are the symptoms of lung cancer? Intense coughing, shortness of breath or a change in the color of sputum are some of the many symptoms.
There is also pain in the chest, shoulder, or back unrelated to pain from coughing. Some major ones are coughing up blood,

Should Smoking Be Public Places?
The Debate about Smoking in Public Places Smoking cigarettes has been around for over two thousand years and is a debatable issue in the United
States. The issue with public smoking is the controversy between banning it and not banning it. Many non–smokers view it as a harmful bad habit,
while users view it as a choice that they are free to make. Opponents of banning smoking in public places feel that it is a choice and that it will take
away their free will. "They argue that people should have the autonomy to decide on what kind of lifestyle they will have" (3). Banning public
smoking may also decrease business at local bars, restaurants, etc. "....as for establishments which are already smoke–free, competition will be higher. It
will also be harder for them to leverage since there will be more businesses that are smoke–free" (3). Additionally, opponents say that non–smokers can
walk away if it bothers them. If a person does not like being around smokers then they can simply move away from them or kindly ask the smoker to
move. Some also argue that exhaust fumes are just as, if not more, harmful as cigarette smoke is. "Lastly, some critics contend that banning smoking in
some places just leaves smokers no choice but to do it somewhere else. They mentioned that this can even lead to increase cases of DUI fatalities
since smokers might drive to other places just so they can smoke" (3).
Plenty of information exists to validate the concerns of the opposition of smoking in

What Is The Theme Of The Moon Lady By Amy Tan Summary
To be lost is to lose all hope. To lose all your aspirations. To surrender all your dreams. Just because your lost, it doesn't mean that you will not be
found. In Amy Tan's "The Moon Lady," Ying
– Ying, the main protagonist, fights with herself and with her culture. Ying–ying is longing to be found –
to be reunited with her family – and with herself. At a youthful age, Ying–ying's childish belief in personal fate and destiny later on led to a rule of
passivity and listlessness. Ying–ying realizes that she has passed on to her daughter the same indifference and passivity that she has experienced
growing up. Just like a broken bond, Ying–ying tries to sew her life back together, but she uses her past pains to tear it again. Tan argues that just
because the strands of your life are torn, it doesn't mean that you can't sew your life together again.
Ying–Ying grew up in a society that discriminated certain behaviors between different genders. Females in her society were forced to act a certain
way; subjected to a lifetime of discrimination. Males were cherished to the family, not only for their physical, substantial, and economic ability, but also
as the carrier of the family name. In this story, Ying–ying isn't allowed to "run and chase dragonflies like a boy," but expected to "stand still so that the
dragonfly can hide in the comfort of her shadow." The words "still", "hide", and "shadow" in this quote symbolize the image that women are forced to
have. This shows how limited

This article looks at challenging behavior" in the clinical setting, and gives advice on how to develop an Action Plan for Education and Training. The
author looks at challenging behavior from more of an interactional viewpoint instead of a judgmental viewpoint. The goal is to understand what
instigated the behavior, and why certain reactions caused the situation to escalate. The key to handling challenging behavior is education and training.
The training should include different ways to deal with the staff's response to the challenging behavior as well as the environmental influences that
might influence the behavior. Through increased education and training, the staff will gain a better understanding about how the behavior affects them
personally, how the situation could have provoked the behavior, and how to prevent environmental influences from provoking a challenging behavioral
response.
The study confirms the fact that there has to be a planned educated approach to manage any difficult employee or patient situation. Taking an educated
approach instead of a judgmental approach will help promote solutions that are more effective, communication, and actions.

Let's Impose a Total Ban on Smoking in All Public Indoor...
Banning smoking in all public indoor areas has been a controversial topic in recent years. Opinions on the issue are divided. Some members of the
society have been expressing their resentment towards the ban, while some insist that such a ban is of practical necessity. In fact, a total ban on
smoking in all public indoor areas should have been imposed a long time ago.
Those criticizing the ban claim that smoking poses no immediate danger to people nearby. However, as we all know, this is far from true. Medical
evidence proving the link between smoking and many fatal diseases is readily available. Smokers, as well as passive smokers, are vulnerable to heart
attacks, strokes and cancers. Many members of the society have lost their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Business owners of catering industries and entertainment venues express their concerns that such a ban would unavoidably discourage smokers
from patronizing and they claim they should be exempted from the ban. However, the argument they make is groundless. If there is a universal ban
in all public places with no exception, there will be little effect on those businesses as long as smokers still have to dine out and still have to relax
themselves in bars, karaokes or discos. It is simply ridiculous to assume that all smokers will stop going to these places! Moreover, the ban should be
imposed on all public indoor places with no exceptions. Non–smokers are everywhere! Why should we ignore the non–smoker in any place? The health
of non–smoker in all places should by no means be neglected.
Smokers also insist that it is their freedom to smoke and it is nobody' business once they are willing to take the risks of smoking. True, they have the
freedom to sacrifice their precious lives in exchange for the short–term 'enjoyment' smoking gives them, but it is only when they do so privately, i.e. at
home! While smokers claim that they have the right to smoke, we must recognize that non–smokers also have their freedom to enjoy fresh air. Isn't it
egotistic to assume that the health of non–smokers should be expended for protecting the 'right' of smokers to smoke simply for their selfish wish for
enjoyment? Isn't it absurd for such a claim in this civilized society of

Smoking is an addiction that can lead to very serious health threats, including lung disease, cancer and stroke. The Campaign for Tobacco–Free
Children reports startling statistics regarding teen smoking: Every year more than 300,000 kids under the age of 18 start smoking. Approximately 30
percent of these new adolescent smokers will die from smoking–related causes. Understanding the influences that cause teens to smoke may help
parents find a way to approach their teens so that they won't want to begin the habit.

While the Smoke Free Arizona Act places definite restrictions on public smoking, it is not making enough progress in order to eliminate the problem
altogether.
The most prevalent issue with the lack of full restriction on public smoking is that there continues to be multiple ways for the unsuspecting passerby
to be bombarded by secondhand smoke. The hypothetical areas that are meant to separate those who would like to smoke from the rest of the
general public are not enough to sufficiently restrain the contaminants from leaking into the surrounding air. The designated 20 foot radius that
separates smoking areas from nonsmokers by no means guarantees absolute protection. The California Air Resources Board classifies secondhand
smoke as a "toxic air contaminant" that "can also travel about 20 feet in every direction and may stay around for hours" ("Secondhand Smoke"). If
smokers so much as move slightly away from their designated areas, all those going about their daily routine will be subjected to the deadly toxins.
The casual smoker does not necessarily adhere to the exact perimeter of designated smoking areas, either. There is no reason why others should be
forced to breathe contaminated air merely to allow smokers to feed their habit more frequently. Although it is a person's choice whether or not they

Democratization Of The Market Case Study
In the past, private individuals and large institutions have largely invested in actively managed mutual funds, such as Fidelity, in which fund managers
choose stocks with one goal – to surpass the market.
But after the financial crisis of 2008, investors switched to index funds, which reproduce stock indices, such as the S & P 500.
The scale of the changes is striking: from 2007 to 2016. in actively managed funds an outflow of about $ 1.2 trillion was recorded, while index funds
received more than $ 1.4 trillion.
In the first quarter of 2017, index funds raised more than $ 200 billion – and this is the highest quarterly growth.

Negative Effects of Smoking on Human Health and the Economy
Moreover, smoking particularly adversely affects women's reproductive health, and smoke exposure on children has had detrimental and some
sometimes fatal effects on children. Many studies have examined and outlined the adverse effects of maternal smoking on both the mother as well as
on the baby and/or infant ( Hofhuis, de Jongste, & Merkus, 2003 & Woolbright 1994). Many states such as Alabama required documentation on birth

Indoor Air Quality And Environmental Health Essay
Indoor Air Quality and Environmental Health Indoor air quality (IAQ) refers only to the quality of the ambient air in an interior environment. On
average, people spend well over half of their time inside, and research has shown that indoor air in buildings can be more contaminated than outdoor
air. The majority of people that work in non–industrial buildings such as offices, schools, and hospitals are exposed daily to poor IAQ. Indoor air
pollution (IAP) continually ranks among the top five environmental risks to public health. Therefore, IAP is a critical factor of the safety and
well–being of the population. This paper explores IAP in context, the health risks related to poor air quality, the burden of disease from household air
pollution, guidelines for environmental infection control in healthcare facilities, and how to improve IAP. Indoor Environmental Quality Indoor
environmental quality (IEQ), comprises the quality of a building's environment concerning the wellbeing and health of those who occupy the space.
Many factors contribute to the IEQ such as air quality, lighting, and damp conditions. People usually experience symptoms or health conditions from
exposures to contaminants while they are indoor. One of the reasons why IEQ is a primary concern is because some people that experience symptoms
while indoors usually get better when they are not in the building. Indoor environments are incredibly complex, and building occupants may be

Tobacco's Harmful Effects, Health and Economic Essay
Tobacco kills five million people yearly, which is much more then HIV/Aids, Tuberculosis, and Malaria combined, according to International Union

this seemingly harmless plant. This mutation of cells can eventually spread and the user will end up with a body full of cancer. These cancer sticks or

Health warnings along with the impact on American wallets are the main two basic reasons for eradicating tobacco use. These health warnings are not
the only reason for eradicating tobacco use, the other reason is the impact on the people's wallet. The extermination of tobacco would not only put

  • 2. Tobacco 's Burden Of Disease Essay 1. Tobacco's "burden of disease" Tobacco use is widespread and has a heavy "burden of disease". According to the U.S. department of Health and Human Services [HHS], tobacco use is related to over 443,000 Americans death each year and has caused approximately 8,860,000 related illnesses (2016). Thus causing it to have a higher mortality rate than "HIV, illegal drug use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined.Tobacco use is thus one of the Nation's deadliest and most costly public health challenges" (HHS, 2016). Tobacco can cause the onset of multiple diseases, for example, cancer, cardiovasculardisease, asthma, COPD, pregnancy complications, SIDS, and oral diseases (HHS, 2016). The prevalence of tobacco use has been gradually decreasing since the nineteen sixty's, but even today tobacco use is quite common. 2. The course of the disease: the concepts of incidence, prevalence, and case–fatality. The concepts of the course of disease are not fully relevant to the subject of tobacco, but can be examined and applied in part. The concept of incidence is the rate of chance that a disease occurs over a period time (Riegelman & Kirkwood, 2015, p. 298). In other words, it is the rate of new cases of a disease. For tobacco use, over two thousand teens and young adults become daily smokers each day in the United States (CDC, 2015). The concept of prevalence in public health is the proportion of those within a population at a set period of time that are afflicted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. To Smoke or Not to Smoke in Public Essay To Smoke or Not To Smoke in Public People have strong feelings concerning smoking in public places. Whether you are in favor of or in opposition to it, smoking in public places is a serious concern that need be addressed. I agree that it is unjust for smokers not to be allowed to smoke where they choose, but it is even more unreasonable for non smokers to be subjected to breathing in the exhaled smoke form someone else(passive smoking). Not to mention second–hand smoke is actually worse for someone than smoking itself. Along with the dangers second–hand smoke presents to the adults, think about what it does not only to your children but other children around you. Smokers may argue that non smokers can just as easily walk away as a smoker ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Second–hand smoke increases a person's chances of getting coronary disease by up to thirty percent. Second–hand smoke also raises the chances of lung and other types of cancer. Each year there are approximately 53,000 deaths from lung cancer and respiratory problems and 25,000 of them are from non smokers. Although that is a long term issue, there are more issues that present themselves instantly. Itchy eyes, runny nose, coughing, hives, and excessive phlegm are just a few. As parents, it is our job to protect our children and that includes the unseen dangers of second–hand smoke. Some of the dangers to children include asthma, lower respiratory illness, middle ear infections, reduced lung growth or sudden infant death syndrome. When children are developing, and are subjected to passive smoking (second–hand smoke), their lung and brain function can be stunted. Middle ear infections can be painful to children and if left untreated can cause permanent damage to their hearing. Even just short exposure of second–hand smoke to children can cause lifelong illnesses for them. Those earlier mentioned things are just the medical reasons for not allowing smoking in public. Children should not be penalized for the bad decisions of adults. For instance children may not be able to play sports or outdoor activities if smoking in public is not completely banned. We are asked to analyze the pertinence for TW to recommend to its clients the Research Affiliate Financial Index (RAFI) strategy over traditional indexing and over a more actively managed strategy. Moreover, consultants help pension funds satisfy their fiduciary responsibility to plan participants. Their experience and their familiarity with diverse firms' investment processes, personnel and operations provides them critical oversight and the capability to run more rigorous analysis. Therefore, consultants are able to provide clients with the most informed assistance on their asset allocation and manager selection decisions. The criteria to assess the suitability of different investment strategies should be driven by the client profile in terms of risk tolerance, liquidity requirements, time horizon and asset allocation. Nevertheless, a pension fund consultant is also interested in obtaining returns outperforming their competitors' investment strategies. Therefore, TW should not only take into account their clients' profiles (i.e. close–end and open–end funds follow different investment strategies according to their nature) but also their investment strategies performance. 2. • 7. Essay on The Debate Concerning Secondhand Smoke We all know that smoking poses a significant risk to our health. We can make an educated decision about whether or not to smoke, and if we do decide to smoke, we should be willing to accept any negative effects such as lung cancer and heart disease later in our lives. But what about exposure to secondhand smoke? At this point, we don't always have a choice in exposure to the smoke of others. The Office of the Surgeon General (OGS) has documented a high level of exposure to secondhand smoke among nonsmoking adults and children in the United States. Blood tests of nonsmokers for the presence of cotinine, a chemical produced by nicotine, indicate that 88% of nonsmoking Americans are exposed to secondhand smoke (US, OGS, Clean). In ... The tobacco industry responded to the report with a well–funded advertising, public relations, and legal counterattack. Since then, controversy over the topic has spread, both politically and socially. But what exactly are the risks associated with secondhand smoke, and how has the American public responded to those risks? Secondhand smoke is most harmful to young children, especially those with asthma or other respiratory diseases. The EPA notes that 43% of children in the United States under the age of 11 live in a home with at least one smoker. Children exposed to secondhand smoke tend to have more bronchitis, pneumonia, respiratory infections, fluid in the middle ear, and asthma. And if both parents smoke, or if the child is frequently exposed to smoke, the child's chances of showing symptoms of these diseases increase (US, EPA, Indoor). Infants and toddlers up to 18 months of age suffer between 150,000 and 300,000 cases of lung infections because of secondhand smoke, according to EPA estimates. This model is an expansion of the CAPM and it includes two additional variables, taking into account size and book to market factors, as explanatory variables expressed within the model as SMB and HML. The Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and Fama & French's three factors model are both models account for the expected returns for stock albeit using different variables to distinguish and add reliability to the predictions of these estimated returns. However, the CAPM uses only one factor to determine the riskiness of the marketplace, Beta, whereas Fama & French expands on this model, incorporate another two factors to establish the risk, Small minus Big (SMB) and High Minus Low (HML), which take into account the relationships between market and share size. Hence, in Fama & French's findings, stocks with higher beta did not always perform better. The Three Factor Model is indeed preferred at predicting the returns of stocks, in correlation with each models risk factor. Moreover, although small stocks outperform large stocks in the past several years, we should not expect small stocks to outperform large stocks in the future, because, in the future stock market, there're quite a lot uncertainty, either, we might find the situation that a small stock can only outperform a large stock in a specific period (i.e. government may promote some specific industry) or it contains ... The fund can also proportion the securities so you the individual investor does not have to. There are two main classifications for what type of fund you can purchase in terms of costs. Smokers in the U.K and U.S.A and the treatment of social pariahs In recent years, antismoking campaigns has increased due to the harmful effects that are caused by smoking. People smoke not caring about the consequences that it has not only on them, but also on other people. In the U.K and U.S.A, campaign might or might not be effective. This essay seeks to illustrate the cause and effect of antismoking campaigns, T.V advertising, campaigns against smokers not being allowed N.H.S treatment, and the ban of smoking in public places and also illustrating the reasons why similar campaigns will not be effective in Saudi Arabia. • 11. Biological Effects from Exposure to Second-Hand Smoke Recently, there has been a lot of up–to–date evidence dealing with biological effects from exposure to second–hand smoke. A lot of people aren't educated about this topic, but second–hand smoke can harm someone almost as much as someone who actually smokes, depending on how often he /she is around it. Young children are a huge target for this subject because many biological and medical researchers have found second–hand smoke causing lifetime damage, and many other negative effects to children as they grow. Smoking bans in certain areas around the world has caused the number of children's hospital visits for asthma to drop significantly (Louis 1). Children are also greatly affected by second–hand smoke and some parents do not realize the harm that they are causing to their young children. Young children are growing fast and their lungs are also growing very fast and second–hand smoke can seriously damage their lungs temporarily or even permanently. Children can't walk away from second–hand smoke, either because they are too young to walk or their parents won't let them. When children are riding in the back of a car and an adult decides they want to smoke, the child or children have no other choice but to breathe in the thick, chemical filled smoky air. "16 percent of the world's population is covered by comprehensive smoke–free laws, and 40 percent of children worldwide are routinely exposed to second–hand smoke" (Louis 2). In the article "Recall of Anti–Tobacco Advertisements and Effects on Quitting Behavior: Results from the California Smokers Cohort" the authors try to research if anti–tobacco television advertisements with personal message can be recall by the person and have a greater impact on smoking cessation. The authors felt that this was an important topic to study because they were concern about the dangers of smoking tobacco. According to Leas et al. (2015) "Nondaily smoking and second–hand smoke exposure can lead to the same negative health consequences that result from daily smoking"(p.90). As a result, the authors engage in a cohort study where they use anti–tobacco advertisements to see which advertisement has a greater recall on smokers, and haves greater effect on smoking cessation. The authors engage in a Cohort study, because this study is being observed for a long period of time and data is being collected from a group of people who are current smokers. The researchers are testing what happens to the person that has been expose to a particular anti–tobacco ad. There are 4 ads; Stages, Don't stop fighting, Trapped, and The Emerging Men. The specific kinds of data the authors use to answer their research questions was the follow ups and the interviews. On the other end of the spectrum choosing an active approach presents its own issues. Finding consistent performing active fund managers who can deliver returns greater than the market is very rare. According to Standard & Poor's SPIVA Australia scorecard in 2012, approximately 69 percent of active retail Australian equity funds failed to beat the S&P/ASX Accumulation index and 72 per cent of active international equity funds failed to beat the benchmark. This coupled with high premiums charged for active management and lack of transparency in managing processes diminishes the appeal of active management approach further. Understanding Smart Beta The 'smart beta' approach should be more accurately described as 'strategic beta' as it aims on improving the flaws of passive index based approaches. It has become an umbrella term for alternative weighting and factor based investing. In essence you take an active approach to choosing the rules to base your fund. But once set, the rules passively

A New Concept IAQ is not a new concept, consider our ancestors living in caves and the impact from smoke pollutions or in ancient Egypt stonemasons working in the open air were healthier than those working in workshop. Even Biblical scripts refer to the dangers of mould in the home. However, there have been four fundamental developments that have occurred in the last forty–five years (Lee, et al., 1996): The increased time spent within indoor environments. The increased dependency on artificial products (building materials and finishes, scents, furniture). The increased occupancy density (open plan offices, reduction of working space). Advancements of energy conservation techniques (air tight buildings, re–circulated air, reduced ventilation). A growing body of scientific evidence has indicated that the air within buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities. The US's Toxic Substances Strategy Committee stated that the majority of cancers (80–90%) are triggered by exposure to substances in the environment (Landrigan et al., 2002). According to a 5–year–study carried out by the US Environmental Protection Agency (Greenfield, 1991), peak concentrations of 20 toxic compounds, some linked with cancer and birth defects, were 200–500 times higher inside than outdoors. • 16. The Philosophy Of Passive Management speaking, not true. In particular, it was assumed that the market is in the state of equilibrium (i.e. all investors have finished to complete their portfolios), operational and transaction costs (payment of intermediaries' services, staff, information services, taxes, etc.) are insignificant, the investor has the ability to receive and grant loans on the same risk–free rate, and so on. Nevertheless, the idea that the market portfolio is probably close to an effective portfolio, initiated a passive portfolio management. This strategy means that when the investor prepares the portfolio, determining the expected return, he is focused entirely on the market portfolio and he doesn't carry on to make any changes in the composition of the portfolio after its formation. Hence is the name. The philosophy of passive management is to minimize the costs of market research and the formation of the portfolio if there is sufficient guarantee of obtaining a stable high yield. In fact, an investor, preparing the portfolio, is focused on some reference portfolio (benchmark portfolio), i.e. portfolio with standard yield in comparison with the actual yield of the portfolio manager. This is not necessarily to consider as a reference only the market portfolio. There are dozens of different investment funds, called "index" funds, which focus on the benchmark portfolio, consisting of securities, selected for a particular trait (eg: a part of any index). • 19. Why Tobacco Should Be Banned From The United States Essay Consumption of Tobacco is a worldwide phenomenon. Nearly every country is planning to raise more restrictions around the consumption of Tobacco. The awareness about its ill effects is rising through the corridors of Parliaments of many countries with the help of governmental and non–governmental organizations. There are some internationally recognized organizations like the "World Lung Foundations" that are striving hard to reduce the consumption of tobacco to a bare minimum. There are numerous reasons that support the argument that tobacco should be completely banned from the United Sates. Tobacco consumption is the number one cause of preventable deaths in the United States. In the United States, cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year. That is around one in five deaths annually only because of smoking. On an average, the person who smokes dies ten years earlier than a non–smoker. These statistics are not mere numbers but speak about the gravity of the situation. The United States government should portray a more negative view on Tabaco to save the lives of many people worldwide (Centre for Disease and Prevention, second paragraph). America has a major debt of over twenty trillion dollars and does not need industries like Tabaco costing them more. There is a huge cost borne by the Federal and State Governments because of the consumption of tobacco by its citizens. The cost, calculated by the Center for Disease and Prevention, is around ... • 22. Smoking in Public Buildings Should Be Banned Smoking in Public Buildings Should be Banned Is it true that secondhand smoke can have almost the same health effects as smoking a cigarette? Is it true that some countries have banned smoking in public buildings already? Is it easy to guess how those bans turned out? The countries that banned smoking in public buildings are experiencing fewer health problems in their citizens and have had no negative economic effects due to the ban. Even though everyone should be able to do what they want, where they want if it is not hurting anyone, smoking should be banned in public buildings because it causes health and environmental problems. Smoking causes health problems for everyone around the world, not just people near smokers. Most people know that smoking can cause countless health problems; a group of scientists conducted a study showing the effects of secondhand smoke in nonsmokers. The scientists knew in 2004 that, on a worldwide scale, the health concerns created by exposure to tobacco smoke for nonsmokers were not well known. They tested people and found the effects from worldwide exposure in children and adults, and these statistics have probably risen in the past ten years (Г–berg, Jaakkola, Woodward, Peruga, PrГјss–UstГјn). They found that "Worldwide, 40% of children, 33% of male non–smokers, and 35% of female non–smokers were exposed to second–hand smoke in 2004. It was met with sharp criticism from the tobacco industry. However, some saw it as a great move by the government in looking after the welfare of its citizens. I hope to explore in the essay each side's voice as well as deal with the myriad of issues the government faced upon the bans proposal. Lastly I will give my opinion on what position the government should take. One the main arguments for this proposed ban was that the tobacco industry was targeting children. In fact citing an internal documents from the tobacco industry that referred to 14 to 24 year olds as their targets (Reynold, 2010). Recognizing this report for India was extremely important. Due to the increased health problems of smoking by targeting a younger age bracket they would effectively increase the weight the government had to carry when it comes to providing health care for its citizens. The government also had in its favor the fact that in all but one case smoking use by young people had decreased when these bans where put in effect. The government's argument for banning tobacco ads can be summed up pretty simply. They were trying to watching out for the safety of their citizens and were working toward the betterment of India. The government had the advantage of being able to take the moral high road and being able to paint the tobacco industry as the "devil".The Nays in this case were represented ... Usually hold each stock in the proportion it represents of the index, or mathematically from a portfolio of not more than a specified number of stock, which best tracks the index historically. Opponents of banning smoking in public places feel that it is a choice and that it will take away their free will. If a person does not like being around smokers then they can simply move away from them or kindly ask the smoker to move. Some also argue that exhaust fumes are just as, if not more, harmful as cigarette smoke is. "Lastly, some critics contend that banning smoking in some places just leaves smokers no choice but to do it somewhere else. Just because your lost, it doesn't mean that you will not be found. In Amy Tan's "The Moon Lady," Ying – Ying, the main protagonist, fights with herself and with her culture. Ying–ying is longing to be found – to be reunited with her family – and with herself. At a youthful age, Ying–ying's childish belief in personal fate and destiny later on led to a rule of passivity and listlessness. Ying–ying realizes that she has passed on to her daughter the same indifference and passivity that she has experienced growing up. Just like a broken bond, Ying–ying tries to sew her life back together, but she uses her past pains to tear it again. Tan argues that just because the strands of your life are torn, it doesn't mean that you can't sew your life together again. Ying–Ying grew up in a society that discriminated certain behaviors between different genders. Females in her society were forced to act a certain way; subjected to a lifetime of discrimination. Males were cherished to the family, not only for their physical, substantial, and economic ability, but also as the carrier of the family name. In this story, Ying–ying isn't allowed to "run and chase dragonflies like a boy," but expected to "stand still so that the dragonfly can hide in the comfort of her shadow." We Must Ban Public Smoking Now Essay "Smoking has become so nearly universal among men, the few nonsmokers are practically ignored and their rights trampled upon" (John Harvey Kellogg, Hirschfelder 146) An occurrence that happens daily for many people is choking on a cloud of smoke, tasting and smelling its acidic tobacco as it swirls through their lungs. Smoking in public has been an issue that has plagued America for many decades, so commonplace by this point that it has become part of everyday life for millions of people. While the Smoke Free Arizona Act places definite restrictions on public smoking, it is not making enough progress in order to eliminate the problem altogether. The most prevalent issue with the lack of full restriction on public smoking is that there continues to be multiple ways for the unsuspecting passerby to be bombarded by secondhand smoke. The hypothetical areas that are meant to separate those who would like to smoke from the rest of the general public are not enough to sufficiently restrain the contaminants from leaking into the surrounding air. The designated 20 foot radius that separates smoking areas from nonsmokers by no means guarantees absolute protection. The California Air Resources Board classifies secondhand smoke as a "toxic air contaminant" that "can also travel about 20 feet in every direction and may stay around for hours" ("Secondhand Smoke"). If smokers so much as move slightly away from their designated areas, all those going about their daily routine will be subjected to the deadly toxins. The casual smoker does not necessarily adhere to the exact perimeter of designated smoking areas, either. There is no reason why others should be forced to breathe contaminated air merely to allow smokers to feed their habit more frequently. Democratization Of The Market Case Study In the past, private individuals and large institutions have largely invested in actively managed mutual funds, such as Fidelity, in which fund managers choose stocks with one goal – to surpass the market. But after the financial crisis of 2008, investors switched to index funds, which reproduce stock indices, such as the S & P 500. The scale of the changes is striking: from 2007 to 2016. in actively managed funds an outflow of about $ 1.2 trillion was recorded, while index funds received more than $ 1.4 trillion. In the first quarter of 2017, index funds raised more than $ 200 billion – and this is the highest quarterly growth. What can not be denied is that the "Big Three" still uses the right to vote with these shares. Therefore, they should be perceived by the owners of de facto corporate leaders. These companies have publicly stated that they are seeking to exert influence. William McNabb, chairman and chief executive officer of Vanguard, said in 2015 that "in the past, some mistakenly believed that our predominantly passive management style implies a passive attitude toward corporate governance, but that's very far from the truth." According to Warner, Hodgson and Carroll (1999), many health insurers and state governments as well as other countries have filed lawsuits against the tobacco industry as a result of increased healthcare costs induced by smoking tobacco. Many smokers within the United States depend on financial assistance from state governments through Medicaid, a healthcare system that assists low–income families. Eventually, the tobacco industry settled the various state lawsuits in Mississippi, Minnesota, Florida and Texas and agreed to pay thirty six billion dollars within a twenty–five year period (Bloch, Daynard, Roemer, 1998). The medical literature Warner, Hodgson, and Carroll (1999) examined regarding the medical costs of smoking–related ailments reveal that approximately eight percent of a person's personal medical care costs is used to treat illnesses, diseases and deadly conditions attributed to smoking, mainly lung cancer, COPD, and heart disease. These numbers, however, do not reflect the costs of other less severe ailments that result from exposing to smoking tobacco. • 41. Indoor Air Quality And Environmental Health Essay Indoor Air Quality and Environmental Health Indoor air quality (IAQ) refers only to the quality of the ambient air in an interior environment. On average, people spend well over half of their time inside, and research has shown that indoor air in buildings can be more contaminated than outdoor air. The majority of people that work in non–industrial buildings such as offices, schools, and hospitals are exposed daily to poor IAQ. Indoor air pollution (IAP) continually ranks among the top five environmental risks to public health. Therefore, IAP is a critical factor of the safety and well–being of the population. This paper explores IAP in context, the health risks related to poor air quality, the burden of disease from household air pollution, guidelines for environmental infection control in healthcare facilities, and how to improve IAP. Indoor Environmental Quality Indoor environmental quality (IEQ), comprises the quality of a building's environment concerning the wellbeing and health of those who occupy the space. Many factors contribute to the IEQ such as air quality, lighting, and damp conditions. People usually experience symptoms or health conditions from exposures to contaminants while they are indoor. One of the reasons why IEQ is a primary concern is because some people that experience symptoms while indoors usually get better when they are not in the building.
