Learning to Lead and Inļ¬uence
Flowers blossom on meeting the sunlight. Same way, the hidden
talents in us take its birth through the leadership and communication
programme in toastmasters. The continuing success of ICAT for the last
13 years is the glittering testimony of this leadership wisdom. Salute to
all our current and past leaders for creating and running a vibrant club
for Indian Chartered Accountants in Dubai.
First of all, I am thankful to Toastmaster Dharmendra Gupta, our Vice
President Public Relation, for taking up the leadership and ownership
for the task of issuing wisdom newsletter. I am also very much grateful
to all our ExCom leaders, Club mentors and members for leading ICAT club from good to great.
Several leaders are playing important role and working hard behind the screen for the success of our club.
Our meetings are full house thanks to the innovative leadership and public relation strategies of Ashit
Dugar and Dharmedra Gupta. We made signiļ¬cant progress in membership renewal and adding new
members, grateful to the eļ¬ort of Jayshree Bhat and Mahesh Agarwal. We are very professional on
circulating valuable record of our meeting, Arun Saxena is very creative and careful in issuing minutes
promptly. Our dear leader Ramakrishnan is the right example of how to be a true leader by helping in all
the logistic arrangements of our club. The club mentors DTM Velu Arumugham and DTM Dharmajan
Patteri are very focused to make ICAT a club of excellence for our fellow professionals.
We are making rapid progress in toastmastersā learning with a ļ¬ying result of achieving distinguished
club status within 3 months of this new toastmastersā year.We are the proud recipient of āLead andWinā
and āSmedlyā awards this year. By ensuring quality meetings and memberās excellence, we are on our
target to become Presidentās Distinguished club as early as possible.
With the loving support of the leadership of ICAI Dubai Chapter, we successfully conducted two
membership campaigns and that has helped many new members to get the beneļ¬t of toastmasters.
It is a truth that nowhere in the world we can get this much valuable opportunity to learn the real skill
required in our life to blossom and become successful. I got the valuable opportunity to receive triple
crown award from world champion of Public Speaking, Manoj Vasudevan. I request all our leaders to
target triple crown in this year in your path to become empowered communicators and leaders. Manoj
Vasudevanās message to the world is very clear. We can ļ¬x all our problem by mastering skill to
communicate, connect, network, lead and inļ¬uence.Together we are strong and let us improve our skill
in leading and inļ¬uencing through toastmasters.

MyToastmaster Journey
I had the privilege to do mentoring with Robert Kiyosaki team on how to
start Business and on becoming an entrepreneur, the renowned author
of Rich Dad Poor Dad. His team suggested that communication is the
key for an entrepreneurship and hence I joinedToastmaster. This is how
I also came to know aboutToastmasters International.
I googled and got to know about Toastmasters at Al Futtaim Learning
Centre Rashidiya. I went there and attended the ļ¬rst session of
Toastmasters. Later, I came to know about ICAT toastmasters.
I came and ļ¬rst attended ICAT as a guest in the last quarter of 2008. I interacted with Mr. Rajack Aslam,
the then President of ICAT.This is how my journey with ICATToastmasters started.
I have learned a lot with ICATToastmasters. I did a couple of roles in sub-committee ofToastmasters, one
of them was the fee collection. We did also a ļ¬rst-time campaign where we ensured that members of
ICATToastmasters are also the member of ICAI.
The mentoring and grooming which I got from senior members like Jayant Jain, Ramesh Taparia,
Surender Jain and Ramesh Mahalingam helped me a lot. Toastmaster gave me the conļ¬dence and
courage to become a public speaker. My ļ¬rst experience to deliver a speech to a large audience was in
ICAI where I delivered my election speech. Rest is history. I have delivered more than 8 lectures in 7
countries. Of course, you all have also seen my journey with ICAI Dubai Chapter.
I have ļ¬rm belief that to become an entrepreneur and to go to a higher level of leadership,
communication skills plays a key factor in becoming a successful leader. We can see example of Barak
Obama whose eļ¬ective communication has taken him to great heights.
I thank ICATToastmasters for grooming my communication skills. I will urge every member ofChartered
Accountants to come and joinToastmasters. Even if you are not to make it to the 10 speeches, if you are
able to attend the session once in quarter, it could help you in your journey in becoming a better
communicator.
Once again,Thank you all for guiding me and itās a privilege to be part of ICATToastmasters.

My Journeyā¦.My Reward
It was ICAI election day in Aug 2015 when my dear friend Abhishek
Gattani invited me to attend one of the ICAT toastmasters meeting.
Without expecting much I reached the venue and sat in the last row
enjoying the meeting proceedings. It was time for impromptu
speeches and the table topic master Shailesh Shenoy pointed at me
and asked me to come and speak. I froze for few seconds and
suddenly my heart started pounding as if I had just completed a 42km
marathon. I collected myself and reached the podium to speak on my
experience in Las Vegas international conference. I was shivering
while speaking and my legs were trembling. But once I ļ¬nished and
returned to my seat, I had a very strong sense of achievement which lingered on till the time I went to
bed that night. I learnt a big lesson in my ļ¬rst toastmasters meeting - the fear of speaking which lasts
for a few minutes is nothing when compared to the feeling of victory which lasts for a much longer
duration.
Toastmasters has not only given me the platform to speak but has given me a wonderful opportunity
to connect with lot of members and guests. As current VP-Education, it has also taught me to take
everything in stride and keep moving on.There will be rejections and disappointments in our way but
that only makes the ļ¬nal result even more sweeter and satisfying.
I cannot thankToastmasters organization enough because I feel giving the people the power to speak
is the best gift that can be given to them. If we can spread this gift to every person we know, we would
do a great service to the society. I once again thank Abhishek Gattani and Shailesh Shenoy for giving
me the chance to come and speak and making me what I am today.
Jai Hind.

Club Mentor - DTM Velu Arumugam
Dear ICAT members,
AsClub Mentor, it gives me a great pleasure to write this message.Ours
is a potent club that provides a platform for CAs to grow experientially
and emerge into become successful servant leaders. As rightly said by
one of our members, ICAT is a Leadership Ladder for CAs.Year after
year it has been producing many leaders and communicators whose
presence in ICAI Dubai Chapter is quite evident. In my 13 years of
Toastmasters Journey, I have had the pleasure of witnessing numerous
such ICAT members who went on to hold diļ¬erent leadership positions
of ICAI Dubai Chapter.
ICAT itself could be seen as a solid proof that amazing leaders can be made and not necessarily they have
to be born.Currently our club has executive oļ¬cers with full of energy, wisdom, care and dedication who
are so passionately working for the club and its members. They are continuously striving to make every
meeting, a memorable experience for members by maintaining its friendliness and a very high quality
meeting sessions.
The beauty of ICAT, is that it empowers its members to achieve their full potential and realize their
dreams through its well proven Leadership & Communication programs. I began my Toastmasters
Journey in 2005, which has brought a great value to both my professional and personal life. The personal
growth I have experienced both as aToastmaster and as an individual amazes me.The friendships I have
formed are priceless. As a Leader my dream is to help & create strong leaders who will stay strong against
any odds that they may encounter. In short only thing that makes me happy, which I am always striving
to achieve in my life is to make a diļ¬erence in others life, to transform people from nobody to somebody,
from ordinary to extraordinary. Rest all my activities are, only the means to this end.As part of this vision
only I have formed Achievers Gavel Club for children between the age group of 10 to 18 years.
Among all the attributes of a leader, the two fundamental and universal qualities are conļ¬dence and
communication for which, the right place for CAs is Toastmasters. With our current dedicated,
enthusiastic, energetic and supportive Leaders, led by our dynamic President TM Aravindakshan, I am
sure that ICAT cub will have another great year ahead, full of growth and excitement. With the eļ¬orts of
such passionate team, surely our club would become a reference point for all the Toastmasters clubs of
ICAI chapters for being the best.
My sincere appreciation to all the club oļ¬cers and the VP PR team, in bringing out such beautiful and
enriching newsletters. And wish all ICAT members a Great and RewardingToastmastering journey.

Mentoring Matters - DTM Dharmajan Patteri
Dear ICATians,
Mentoring is the hallmark of success in the Toastmasters program.
Members excel when helped by a more advanced member and
accomplish goals they might not otherwise reach on their own.
Mentors get a chance to give back to their club by nurturing another
memberās growth. This leads to self-reļ¬ection and beneļ¬ts both
mentor and mentee.
Mentoring is not the same as managing or coaching. A mentor is
simply somebody who has knowledge and experience mentee donāt
have. As a mentor you can reļ¬ne your skills, learn new skills and
receive recognition.
Mentee beneļ¬ts signiļ¬cantly when mentor pass on their unique
brand of knowledge, insight, perspective and wisdom where they
can develop conļ¬dence, enhance speaking skills and leadership
abilities.
To me, if you are a leader in business or
community, you have an undeniable
responsibility to make yourself available for less
experienced individuals to tap into your wisdom
and experience. In the spirit of mentoring, I hope
you will step in to eļ¬ective mentoring soon.
When you apply Toastmasters skills as you
mentor others, please keep the big picture in
mind and do it in a fun and friendly way.
Sometimes it is okay to not know an answer.
In this journey, you have an opportunity to help
someone else become a competent leader and
communicator. Are you ready to discover
mentoring possibilities in you?
Best wishes for an excellent year ahead! Let us
make this best year yet for ICAT and its members.
YoursTruly,
Dharmajan Patteri DTM
Past Area Governor, District 20
During our CA course training, there were many who
guided us from time to time, I am sure that you must have
helped many budding CAs to achieve their goals.

Discipline - Ladder to Success
You must be wondering what discipline has to do with toastmasters. Let us ļ¬rst
understand what is discipline.
Discipline is deļ¬ned as a ļ¬eld of study or is training to ļ¬x incorrect behavior or create
better skills.
Discipline is the foundation of successful and happy life.
Many believe that discipline takes away the freedom. In fact discipline gives the freedom. Some of the scenarios would
clarify this point.
Children love chocolates. What will happen if you give a box full of chocolate to your child, child will eat and fall sick. But if
you discipline your child to eat one or two chocolates a day, it is good for the health and child will enjoy chocolate.
Similarly, if you are in a traļ¬c jam and in order to reach early you break the traļ¬c rules and regulations, you might end up
in an accident or caught by the police with ļ¬nes. Do you think you will reach on time? I donāt think so.
If you take oļ¬ your hands from the car steering wheel, where will the car go?
Discipline is very important in every dayās life. In order to teach a discipline to your children sometimes parents have to be
unkind to be kind. When mama giraļ¬e gives birth to a baby giraļ¬e, mama giraļ¬e gives once kick to the baby giraļ¬e, baby
giraļ¬e ļ¬y and falls down, mama giraļ¬e continue kicking the giraļ¬e until it stands on its own feet and run. It is the love of
the mama giraļ¬e to the baby. If it does not mean that mama does not like the baby but to helping it to escape from the
predators who would devour the baby. This is not the act of hatred but it is an act of love.
Preparing the speeches:
Speeches are not just to complete the projects from basic manual or advance manuals. One has to go through the
objectives very carefully and prepare the speeches. One should satisfy himself to the contents of the speech.
Mentoring:
it is not what you write and get satisļ¬ed, the speech has to be mentored by the senior toastmasters, who can add some
value to your speech. Make changes to your speech to become more interesting and logical.
Rehearse:
Rehearse your speech several times until you are comfortable with the content. Body language and voice modulation can
be developed once you are thorough with the speech. Take the help of the mentors ask them to watch you delivering the
speech during rehearsal.
Delivery:
if you follow all the previous steps above, the delivery will go smooth. Do your best to project your speech. Winning is not
in your hand. But if you do these steps with discipline Your level of success determined by your level of discipline and
perseverance.
