3. INTRODUCTION
• Conchostracans are
commonly known as clam
shrimp belongs to class
Branchiopoda of phylum
Arthropoda.
• Conchostracans can be
distinguished from other
groups of the Branchiopoda
because their bodies are
completely enclosed within
the carapace and because
they possess comparatively
reduced abdomen. They
range in size from a few Conchostracan (clam shrimp)
millimeters to up to 0.7 - 1.7
cm).
Studies on Conchostracans
4. Conchostracans are commonly found in
temporary water bodies such as
ephemeral ponds and troughs.
In 1986 the conchostracans were divided
into five families of bivalve crustaceans:
Lynceidae, Limnadiidae, Cyclestheriidae,
Cyzicidae, and Leptestheriidae. However,
the relationships among these families
are not well understood
Studies on Conchostracans
5. There are about 200 sp. Of conchostracans
known all over he world (Belk, 1982).In India
35 Sp. Has been recorded so far (simachalan
2004).
Cyclstheria is distributed in warmer parts of
the world (Sissom 1980),The genus Lynceus
cosmopolitan but rarely distributed in the
plains of South India. This genus is recorded
at high altitude, Kodaikanal(Gurney, 1930).But
the genus Eulimnada is recorded from
various region of the India.

6. Material and Methods
STUDY SITE
In the present study survey of ephemeral and
lentic water bodies for Zooplankton have been
carried out in Koyali village (Dist-Pune). Some
specimens of the order Conchostraca were
collected from ephemeral bodies , which is
very rich in floating plants and submerged
water plants as Hydrilla, Pistia etc. the water
temp ranged from 25-28c
the pH was was slightly basic ranged
from 7.3 to 8.3
Studies on Conchostracans
7. –Sampling was done for a period of one months
Plankton samples and roots of Pistia sp.were taken
in a plastic cans of about 300 ml capacity
Plankton net of 50 um mesh size was taken and
water filtered in to the plastic cans. the cans were
immediately taken in to the laboratory. the samples
were observed for zooplankton and
conchosracans.and are fixed them in 4% formalin
with 2% glycerin
Slides were prepared some of the specimens
photographs and live videos were taken using a
Sony digital camera

8. • Identification of conchostracans
were done according to (Belk 1982)
• And the Genus is confirmed from the

9. Observations on Conchostracans
• Following are observations of
conchostracans
• Size of the conchostracans
ranges from 2-3 mm
• Body is completely enclosed
in a bivalved shell.
• Both valves of the shell are
held together by strong
muscle.
• The sessile compound eyes
are close together and
located on the forehead.
Rostrum is absent.
• Shell shows about 15 lines of
growth.

10. • The first pair of antenna is
reduced and
unsegmented. The second
pair of antenna is long and
biramous and covered
with bristles.
• The no. of thoracic
segment varies 10-15
each with a pair of leaf like
phyllopod gilled-feet).
Studies on Conchostracans
13. • In females, the
outer lobes of
several middle legs
are modified into
long, upward-
bending threadlike
outgrowths, used
to hold the eggs on
the dorsal side of
the body under the
shell.
• The body ends in a
large chitinized
telson, that is
either laterally
compressed and
bears a pair of
large hooks, or
dorsoventrally
compressed, with
short hooks.

15. RESULT AND DISCUSSION
The present species shows similar
characters to that of Eulimnda
inflecta mattox(Nair 1968). but
the present sp.of conchostraca
carries eggs in a shell which
belongs to new sp. from genus
Eulimnada. Further investigation
and taxonomy is needed.
