Name of the School : S.N.Trust H.S.S., Kollam Duration : 45 Mins
Name of the Subject : Social Science
Name of the Unit : The Earth Which Supports Man
Name of the Topic : Volcanoes
Curricular Statement : The pupil acquires knowledge about the volcanoes through observation,
Discussion and questioning.
Content Analysis
Terms : Volcanoes, Molten rock, Vent, Crater, Lava, Deccan Plateau, Active,
Extinct, Dormant, Mount Etna, Italy, Mount Fujiyama, Japan, Kilimanjaro,
Africa, Vesuvius, Volcanic eruptions, Minerals, Black soil, Cotton
Cultivation, Hot springs, Healing properties, Spas.
Facts : * Volcanoes are caused when magma flows out onto the earth’s
Surface through fissures that are caused due to the movements
Of plates.
The fissures, through which the magma comes out from the
aesthenosphere on to the crust of the earth is known as the vent.
The funnel shaped depression that can be seen on the summit of a
volcano is known as a crater.
Some volcanoes erupt the lava out with a great explosion and some
others, silently.
Deccan Plateau was formed by the lava which erupted silently in
prehistoric times.
Based on the chances of eruption the volcanoes are classified into
three – Active, Extinct and Dormant.
The areas where the eruption takes place are rich in minerals.
The black soil formed as a result of a volcanic eruption is suitable for
cotton cultivation.
The hot springs that are found on volcanic mountains have healing
properties and they are known as Spas.
Concept : Volcanoes are caused when molten rock flows out on to the earth’s
Surface through fissures are caused due to the movement of plates.
Learning Outcome
Remembering : The pupil will be able to get knowledge about the volcanoes.
Understanding : The pupil will be able to understand the causes of volcanoes.
3. Applying : The pupil will be able to apply the knowledge to learn about the volcanic
eruption.
Analysing : The pupil will be able to analyse the causes of volcanoes.
Skill : The pupil will be able to get the ability to know about volcanoes.
Attitude : The pupil shows positive attitude to know about volcanoes.
Interest : The pupil shows interest to know about the volcanoes.
Appreciation : The pupil appreciates that volcanoes are useful to human life.
Learning Aids : * Power point Presentation on Volcanoes (ICT)
Working Model of Volcano.

Classroom Interaction Procedure Pupil Response
Introduction
The teacher entered the class and made a casual interaction with the
pupil. Then the teacher said that today we are going to learn in a new
method. With the help of laptop she presents the video clipping
regarding volcanic eruption and asked the pupil to identify it.
From their responses, the teacher enters into the topic
VOLCANOES (B.B)
Pupil observed
the video and
identified it as
* Volcano
4. Presentation
The teacher informed the pupil that today we are going to learn about
the volcanoes through role play method. She randomly picked four
students and named them as Volcano, Lava, Vent and Crater. Then the
teacher informed the characters to introduce themselves to the class
as Volcano, Lava, Vent and Crater.
Hi, I’m Volcano…I’m caused
w hen molten rock f low s out
into the earth’s surf ace
through f issures that are
caused due to the movement
of plates. My main features
are Vent, Crater and Lava.
Ha ha ha…I’m Lava. I’m the
molten rock expelled by a
volcano during an eruption.
I’m made of tw o elements –
Silicon and Oxygen.
Pupil listened to
the teacher
5. Hi, I’m Volcanic Vent. I’m an
opening in the earth’s crust
through w hich molten lava, ash
and gases are ejected.
Hi, I’m Volcanic Crater. I’m
a circular depression in the
ground caused by volcanic
activity.
I hope you understood
the main features of a
volcano. Now let me
introduce the dif ferent
types of Volcanoes.
They are Active, Extinct
and Dormant.
Pupil listened to
the characters
Pupil listened
carefully
6. Hi, I’m Active Volcano. I erupt
f requently. I show signs of
eruption, or that is know n to
erupt over a period of years or
decades. Examples are
Mount Etna in Italy and Mount
Fujiyama in Japan.
Hi, I’m Dormant Volcano. I
have erupted earlier and
not active in the recent
past. But can become
active. Examples are
Kilimanjaro in Af rica.
Pupil listened
carefully and
noted down the
points
7. Hello, I’m Extinct Volcano. I’ll
never erupt again because
there is no lava or magma
supply in me.
Students, I hope now you
understood about
Volcanoes. But there is one
more thing that you must
know . Volcanic eruptions are
threats to human life, but
they are also useful in many
w ays. Let me explain you in
points.
Volcanic erupted areas are rich in minerals.
The black soil formed as a result of volcanic
eruption is suitable for cotton cultivation.
The hot springs found on volcanic mountains
have healing properties.
These places have been developed as tourist
spots.
Pupil listened
to the points
8. Activity
After the role play, the teacher divided the class into 5 groups Pupil discussed in group
(namely A, B, C, D and E) and gives the activity card. Each and presented their answer.
groups were given different questions to discuss.
Group A – What are the main features of a volcano? Group A – The main
Group B – What is an Active Volcano? Give examples. Features of a volcano are
Group C – What is a Dormant Volcano? Give examples. Lava, Vent and Crater.
Group D – What is an Extinct Volcano? Give examples. Group B – Active
Group E – How the volcanoes are advantageous to man? Volcano erupt frequently.
After the discussion, each group leaders were asked to present Eg. Mount Etna in Italy.
their answers. Group C – Dormant
Volcanoes erupted
earlier and not active in the
recent past. But can
become active. Eg.
Vesuvius in Italy.
Group D – Extinct
Volcnoes will not erupt
again. Eg. Kilimanjaro
in Africa.
Group E – Volcanic
erupted areas are rich in
minerals, black soil formed
is suitable for cotton
cultivation and hot springs
found on volcanic
mountains have healing
properties.
Codification
The teacher codifies the points by explaining that the main
features of a volcano are lava, vent and crater. There are three Pupil listened to the teacher
9. types of volcanoes – Active, Dormant and Extinct. Though and understood the points
volcanic eruptions are threats to human life, they are useful in clearly.
many ways.
Review Questions :
1) What is a Volcano?
2) What are the main features of a volcano?
3) What are the different types of volcanoes?
4) Explain Active, Dormant and Extinct Volcanoes with an example.
5) How volcanoes are advantageous to man?
Follow-Up Activity :
Prepare a model of a Volcano and write a short note on it.
