What is the Definition of a Hero?
When one thinks of heroes, names such as Ghandi, Martin Luther King, and Mother Theresa often
come to mind. These people had done a lot of favors, courage, helps, and more of things for the
people who needed them. The true definition of hero is a man of distinguished valor. Bravery,
courage, intrepidity, boldness, daring, and prowess in war are a hero's characteristics. However a
hero is understood to be different to everyone. Upon closer examination, many different qualities
than these become apparent. The definition of heroism changes with the context and time. Heroes
of the past are not necessarily heroes of present time and vise versa. A person can be a hero for

Some individuals living in poverty with a determination to succeed work hard all of their lives to
become what everybody doubted they could. Despite of their financial problems, drug and crime
surroundings, or difficulties in the language skills, their desire to triumph fuels their persistence.
Those who make it to success are the few living examples of the purest form of hero anyone can
be. They are not only their own heroes but also the heroes of the poor children who dream of
becoming like them someday.
Anyone who influences anyone else by saving or helping save his or her lives can be a hero. Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. changed the lives of millions of people by bringing justice to minorities.
Mahatma Gandhi, one of the greatest heroes, led a nonviolent revolution to free his country. Even
a parent can be a hero to his or her child by leading them in the right direction. All teachers are
heroes when they make it their job to teach a child anything that will help them in life. You don't
have to go to great lengths by risking your life to make a difference in someone else's life.
There is no discretion to become a hero. The perfect hero is one who will defy the odds. One who
will do the morally correct thing no matter how hard it is. A true hero won't let you down. A hero
will give you opportunity to worship him without regret. The hero presents himself when given the
chance, yet

2. Definition Essay: What Defines A Hero?
Hero
The definition of a hero. A person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage,
outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Another definition is the main male character in a
story, play or film. Let's think about this for a minute. What does the stereotypical hero look like?
Chiseled features and some sort of tight costume or uniform. They display qualities such as bravery,
immortality, and an undying devotion to the longevity of the human race. Oh, and don't forget their
superhuman powers; speed, strength, mind reading etc. Does a hero always have to demonstrate
physical strength? Does he always have to save the human race in a valiant act of pure courage?
What truly defines a hero in every sense of the word? I believe acts of perseverance and emotional
strength suit this word more accurately. Or, those who save the human race by teaching and
encouraging us to save ourselves.
Heroes that were defined by their perseverance could be found during WWI. In July of 1918 three
nurses were aiding the wounded when an artillery strike ensued on the front lines. Bullets flew and
explosions erupted, but they kept their composure. Their small tent was ripped to shreds and overrun
with the wounded, but they did not give up. One of...show more content...
I believe that a hero can be anyone. Hero means something different to everyone. People save
lives in many ways and often go unrecognized because they do not wear a uniform or a tight
colorful costume. The hero is not always the officer in war. Sometimes it's the nurses or doctors that
keep them alive. The hero is not always the government entity who swoops in and saves the women
and children from abuse. Sometimes it is their own emotional strength that saves them and makes
them heroes. The hero is not always Superman who saves the human race from extinction once
again. Sometimes the hero is someone who believes in you and encourages you to be strong and
persevere. Even you can be a

The media is quick to attach the word "hero" to anyone that does a good deed. I disagree with this
because, good deeds don't necessarily make you a hero, they make you a good person. Being heroic
should come naturally. Heroes are born, not made. A hero must be courageous, kind–hearted and
humble. I understand that many people have their own view on what a hero is. People label heroes by
the things they do. Some even label people heroes just because they are famous. There is a big
difference between a role model and a hero. It was expressed best in the article, What Makes A
Hero? The Impact of Integrity on Admiration and Interpersonal Judgment, "Doing the right thing is a
basis for acts of heroism and laudable accomplishment but often...show more content...
I personally think someone that puts others before themselves and puts themselves at risk to better
the life or situation of another is a hero. I also notice that our younger generation may be making
heroes out of the wrong types of people. When I think of a hero, the first thing that pops in my head
is the U.S. military. They constantly put their lives, families, and personal feelings on the
backburner for their mission. They risk their lives protecting not just a few people, but all of
America. Even though there are a lot of people who disagree with what they do, they continue to
protect our freedoms. I know there are a lot of people who won't agree with me but because they
believe what the military does is wrong no matter the reason. There are other people that I consider
heroes that are on a much smaller scale also. These heroes are firemen/women, policemen/women,
some teachers and social workers. Firemen will run into a burning house one more time just to save
someone's cat because it will make them happy. They put themselves in danger for the sake of
others. Police officers protect their cities even though they might not want to. They will save a
murderer if he/she is in danger just as they would save anyone else. Police officers have to earn
respect just like the military because people don't agree with what their orders are. Social workers
may not put their lives on the line but they wont hesitate to save children from abusive

4. Hero Essay : What Makes A Hero A Hero?
What Makes a Hero a Hero? As I have recently sat down with my grandmother, Mary, I asked her
questions about a hero and herself being a hero. My grandmother has such an impact on me in
daily life along with being a personal hero to me. She is such an inspiration to me in so many
ways that I could never think of taking for granted. I chose my grandmother as my hero because of
obstacles I have faced, she was the one to show me the love and support I was in need of at the time.
Mary shows the characteristics of being loving, caring, supportive, having open arms along with
many others, why? She shows theses traits because it is the right thing to do at all times no matter

Hearing that she was completely down to talk to me gave me butterflies. I thought that I had lost
my greatest inspiration in my life. As conversation between us continued, I realized that I could
trust her, that she was and always will be here for me. I saw how much she truly cared for and loved
me.
At first I was completely nervous about the interview because I was not sure if she would agree
to talk or just to even meet up. I had to talk myself up to do this not only for my grades but also
for a shot at better communications. As time got closer to meet up with Mary, my nerves were all
over the place. Not only did I have to tell myself to keep calm but to also think positive. This was
a plus for me but also my grandmother. During the interview there was times that I could tell that
she was standoffish on answers because she was uncertain about her standings with me. I was the
same way on asking her some of the questions just because our bond was not like it used to be, we
were on different terms. I did not want to step over into personal territory and neither did she. As
the questions were coming to an end, I could truly see how my grandmother felt. I saw in her eyes

5. Definition Essay: What Is A Hero?
"What is a hero?" The word hero can mean whatever a person wants it to mean. Many people define
a role model or person they think is a hero out of their occupations. However, a person does not
become a hero because of their occupation or what they do that we envy. A hero is a person who
takes a bold step or achievement that requires courage, bravery and a kind heart to do it, and the act
is normally done for others. Heroes are not heroes out of their occupations like a doctor. For
example, a doctor's work is to save lives, so when they do this, it is what we expect of them. If a
doctor saves a drowning child from a swimming pool, he becomes a hero. The doctor demonstrates
an act of bravery and courage for the child. So a hero can be any person with or without an
occupation, who performs a bold act for others. A hero just has to be someone to sacrifice
something for others. Heroes can come from anywhere. Heroes do not have to do action acts such
as saving a person. Heroes can even be from acts of kindness. Some...show more content...
A hero goes through many difficulties in a journey that poses so many dangers of failure. Many
people in such situations would give up and turn back. However, heroes persist on despite
challenges and difficulties. Heroes are ordinary people in difficult situations that require courage and
even raise fear in them. However, they manage to overcome their fear in order to persist on until
they accomplish their mission. The difference between those who become heroes and those who do
not is their courage to face difficult situations and never giving up until they accomplish their goal.
Their courage allows them to persist on with any challenge that comes their way, despite standing a
slight chance of winning. They take up the slim chance and manage to use it to their advantage until
they achieve what they intend to achieve for

6. Characteristics of a Hero Essay
Characteristics of a Hero
"A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself" (Campbell 1).
When we think of heroes most of us think of movie stars or professional athletes, but it's not
always about your popularity or talent it can also be about how you help society. What I think
make a great hero is someone who is able to overcome his or her obstacles in life, is highly
motivated, and has plenty of bravery.
Overcoming obstacles may be one of the hardest parts of being a hero. I think it's the hardest
because a lot of people are blocked from doing something and just quit. A great example of thistrait
is Jackie Robinson. He was discriminated against because he was African–American. Even though

In order to be a successful hero you must be a highly motivated person. Without motivation you
would not be very successful because you would have no ambition to try and make a difference
in the world. I think Rodney Dangerfield is a great example of this because he started he career at
just 15 and he died while he was in the middle of a movie. Also when his wife tried to make him
quit he just blew their many years of happiness and divorced her. In one of his quotes he stated, "At
twenty a man is full of fight and hope. He wants to reform the world. When he's seventy he still
wants to reform the world" (Dangerfield 3).
Bravery is a great trait for a hero to posses. I think bravery is a key quality because you don't always
know what lies ahead of you and you have to be brave to continue. A good example of this is
Charles Lindburgh. He was the first person to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. I believe that took a
great amount of bravery because no one had ever made it across, so he didn't know what lie ahead
of him. One of his many good quotes he said, "The most effective way to do it, is to just do it",
(Lindburgh 1).
So as you may see overcoming obstacles, being motivated and being outstandingly brave is key to
becoming a great hero.Like overcoming obstacles was very hard for

7. Hero Essay : The Definition Of A Hero
The Definition of a Hero
A hero does not have a cape draped around their neck or a whole comic book written about them.
Instead, a hero influences others to do make the correct choices in life. A hero does not give up
simply because the challenges they are face are arduous. In addition, a hero does not need
recognition for their acts. Finally, true hero's want to help themselves and other because it is the
right thing do, not because they will have a newspaper segment on them or a spot in the daily news.
Although a true hero does not receive recognition for their acts, they continue to inspire others do do
the right thing and they never back down despite the challenges.
To start, a hero inspires others to do deeds that define them as a heroic person. For instance, Ana
fought a terrible fight against cancer but continued to inspire her family to live their lives to the
fullest. In a piece by Ana's son, Adam, he wrote, "I know she is afraid, she fights this lethal
disease every moment of everyday, and does it with a smile," (An Everyday Hero). By Ana
keeping a glowing slime on her face, it made the others around her know that although she is
terrified, she is content with her condition and knows she can not change it. Ana inspired everyone
around her until the day she passed. Moreover, Moco, a dog, that had a defect in his hind–leg that

9. Defining Heroism
Heroes, despite their extraneous characteristics, have very similar values to the people that follow
them. This point of view can best be explained using three key points of focus. These points are as
follows: The similarity of a higher guidance in times of need, the similarity of the code of honor
that they live by, and the fact that no matter who the hero is, he or she is under pressure to be a
successful role model.
The similarity of higher guidance in times of need is the easiest and most direct of all the three
factors. Most heroes, but not all, live their lives in allegiance to God or another worshiped figure.
Take the story of Beowulf for example. Beowulf was without fear when he faced the monster known
as Grendel. This...show more content...
I believe the correct view on the subject is that no matter who you are, you are still God's love and
servant. This unites every class, as long as they chose to believe it.
Another communal characteristic of heroes and those who follow them is the fact that everyone
lives by a code of honor. Heroes live by a higher code of honor than those who follow them. For
heroes, their actions must either all be in accordance with the rules set by their master, or greatly
excel the expectations that are held for others. Going out of their way at every possible instance
is considered mandatory. The main point of all of this is not that they actually do all these
things, but that they proudly enjoy performing the tasks given to them. Everyday people are the
same, just less intense. Everyone has a code of honor. Some have a higher level than others. One
person may live by a code of honor consisting of no regulations at all. Another could live by the
regulations that they can't go against the bible, can't break the law, and occasionally have to try
to be nice to people. In another case, a person could see the minimum code of conduct in their life
being to live their life in the footsteps of God, obey all laws, and do every possible act of humanity
and good will that they can. The point is that no matter who the subject is, be it hero or zero,
everyone has a code of conduct that they chose to live by

Heroes are always seen in comic books, TV shows, movies, and etc. The dictionary definition of a
hero is, "a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble

intelligent, independent, or honest. However the most important traits that can be for an everyday
person is that they are human, have morals, and they are very passionate about what they do.
Although, in most cases the word hero is used almost everyday. Such as, in comic books that have

Passion is the one thing that is not commonly seen. Passion is required if you want to be a hero.
Everyday jobs are the ones that require extra passion, because it's those everyday jobs that build
the foundation for the future, and that future is in the children. People like teachers are supposed
to put passion in their work, so they can inspire and teach future generations to think, and feel for
themselves rather than being dependant on each other. Being independent is great, but teaching
people to be independent is even greater. Teaching children to put passion in their work is greater
than that too. People believe that the pay of a job highlights the importance of that job. If you
have a higher pay, then you're important, and vice versa. That may be true in some cases, but it's
not for most. People like teachers, people who pick up garbage, people who work in sewers, and
etc. all require passion too. Those are all important things that is required in society to be kept
clean, and educated. People are being told that becoming doctors, lawyers, and other generic
important jobs that parents want children to be in the future. Though, the real heroes are the ones
that do the work that nobody else wants to do, and even if they are faced with negativity for doing
work like picking up garbage, they still do it. Being human, having morals, and being passionate are
the most important traits and

When talking about a hero, some people might think of a veteran, a fire fighter, or even
superman. The definition of the word "hero" varies between different people; however, my
definition of a hero is someone who is selfless, brave, and strong. Someone who doesn't runaway
when things get hard, who gives their all just for the wellbeing of others regardless of the strain it
puts on themselves. When thinking of the word "hero" the only person who comes to my mind
is my cousin Cassy. Cassy fits my own personal description of a hero; she is selfless, brave, and
strong. She doesn't run away when things get tough and most importantly, she looks out for
others no matter what the situation is. What is a hero to you? On September 24th of 2017, my
parents, along with my sister and I, walked into my grandma's house around three o'clock in the
afternoon. My aunt Patty had told us she had very important news for us to hear that evening. As
we sat down in the living room of my grandma's small condo, everybody looked at one another
awkwardly waiting for someone to speak first. My mom started the conversation by asking how
long my aunt was going to be in town. My aunt slightly teared up as she tried to spit out her

14. Hero Essay : What Makes A True Hero Today?
A hero is not defined by what he does, but how he acts after the fact. While many people act like
heroes every day, that isn't what defines a true hero. Staying humble and kind is how you define a
true hero. Not someone that wants recognition or something special for doing something to be
called a hero. We need heroes in today's world, it's unfortunate however, we need heroes because of
all the terrorist attacks, natural disasters and just to simply help an old woman across the street with
grocery bags. There are multiple characteristics, that make them a true hero. This is how you define a
true hero in today's world.
Bravery is important today for people who are faced with challenges that can be intimidating or
scary, but face these challenges everyday head on. Just look at some people we call heroes today.
They never shied away from the situations that made them heroes, they might have been scared,
but they had bravery. Bravery is, if not one of the most important characteristics, this entirely
defines a hero in one word. The most unbelievable part of many heroes today is that many are the
normal people wanting to make a difference in where they live or possibly the world. In some
situations, bravery is not even necessary, but many heroes still have to have it. Someone with
bravery will be risky too, or bend the known rules to make things right for a group or a majority of
people. In the news video, One Girl Changing the World, an everyday person named Malala displays

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a hero is "a man who exhibits extraordinary bravery,
firmness, fortitude, or greatness of soul, in any course of action, or in connection with any pursuit,
work, or enterprise; a man admired and venerated for his achievements and noble qualities."
Throughout history there has often been a need for such a human. The epic poem Beowulf narrates
the story of a hero named Beowulf who rescues Denmark from several monsters that terrorize it:
Grendel and his mother, and later, a dragon. In doing so, he becomes a heroic figure. In addition to
his unique birth and purpose, Beowulf performs many impossible feats, and truly is devoted to

As it has been used in this context as such, it is possible that lines 943–945 are addressing the fact
that Beowulf was given as a gift from the Lord of Ages. Regardless if she is a virgin or not, it is
clear that Beowulf's life–like Christ's–was given by God.
God, however, did not grant these live without reason; indeed, both Beowulf and Christ were born
to serve a specific purpose. Beowulf is born to rescue the Danes from Grendel, who routinely attacks
its mead–hall called Heorot. In the beginning of the poem, when Hrothgar is talking to Wulfgar, he
says that the "Holy God has, in His goodness, guided him [Beouwulf] here to the West–Danes, to
defend us from Grendel" (381–383). No other but Beowulf can defeat Grendel. In Unferth's speech,
he says that, "no one has ever outlasted an entire night against Grendel" (527–528). This passage
confirms that Beowulf is the only solution to the Danes' problem. Likewise, Christ is the only
man "Who gave himself for our sin, that he might deliver us from this present evil world,
according to the will of God and our father" (Gal. 1.4). His purpose on Earth was to die on the
cross for our sins. Every human is born in sin (Rom. 3.23), and consequently, everyone is
destined to die (Rom. 6.23). God's remedy to this was to give his son, Christ, to die for the sins of
the world so that "...whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John.
3.16). His life on Earth served a greater purpose: it allowed all

Many of us thought he was a very inspiring and wonderful man because he had achieved his goal
by showing everyone that all of us are equal. If it weren't for him, there probably wouldn't be

Gandhi had stood up for his country; India. "Gandhi led nationwide campaigns to ease poverty,
expand women's rights, and build religious and ethnic amity" plus he had "spent a number of
years in jail in both South Africa and India". In other words Gandhi never gave up showing
everyone how India should be independent. Gandhi had stood out his way by leading marches to
declare independence. Gandhi had been admired for his bravery (when he was thrown in jail a
few times), his confidence (he never showed any sign of weakness) and perseverance (he had

example policemen, firefighters, nurses, lifeguards etc. are heroes everyday because they take the

always have courage. These people risk their own life to save someone else's. To be more specific

Considering that a hero is someone that is viewed differently by all people you cannot really pin too
many set qualities upon the title. One of the few universal qualities that a hero embodies is bravery,
without bravery a hero could not achieve anything above mediocre which would not qualify them
to be a hero. Another quality that a hero possesses is the ability inspire others, because in the end a

What Makes Someone a Hero Have you ever thought of a hero as someone who flies around with
superpowers and saves people from evil? Well guess what? That ain't happening. A real hero doesn't
have these things. Instead, they do good with the abilities they have. One guess about hero's qualities
