The document discusses the challenges facing families today from various societal influences and changes in cultural values. It notes both positive developments like greater awareness of human dignity and rights, as well as negative trends like rising divorces and a decline in openness to life. The Church aims to support families through pastoral care and by promoting traditional Christian values of love and service and the sanctity of marriage and family life.

The Christian Family

4. INTRODUCTION
1.The Church at the
Service of the
Family
2.The Synod of 1980
in Continuity with
Preceding Synods
3.The Precious
Value of Marriage
and of the Family
7. The Church,
conscious that
matrimony and
the family constitute
one of the most
precious gifts of
humanity, speaks out
and wants to offer
her help to all
who know the value
of the family and try
to live it fatihfully
8. 2 – The Synod of 1980
continuation of the previous synods
9. As an educational community, the family should help man discern its own vocation
and make all the effort needed to achieve greater justice, preparing its members
from childhood for intepersonal relationships, rich in justice and love.
11. God has willed matrimony and the family as part of His creation and has ordained them to
fulfill themselves in Christ. They need His grace to be cured from the wounds of sin, and
returned to their first priciple, that is, to the full knowledge and integral realization of the God’s plan.
12. We are at a time
when the family
is the target
of many powers
that try to destroy
and deform it.
The Church is conscious
that it is good for society
and in itself, and is
profoundly committed
to the promotion
of the family
14. 1. PART ONE - BRIGHT
SPOTS AND SHADOWS
FOR THE FAMILY TODAY
1. The Need To Understand
the Situation
2. Evangelical Discernment
3. The Situation of the
Family in the World
Today
4. The Influence of
Circumstances on the
Consciences of the
Faithful
5. Our Age Needs Wisdom
6. Gradualness and
Conversion
7. Inculturation
15. 4. We need
to know
the actual
situation of
the family
16. It often happens that a men and women of today, who are sincerely looking
for an answer to the serious daily problems of marriage and family life,
are offered view points and attractive proposals which actually
compromise the truth and dignity of the human person.
18. The supernatural
sense of faith
does not consist
solely in the
consensus
of the faithful.
The Church, following
Christ, seeks the truth
which does not
always coicide
with the majority’s
opinion.
She listens to her
conscience and not
to the powers that be.
She defends the
poor and scorned.
26. - the advent of a truly anti-natal mentality
27. At the root of these negative phenomena there is often a misconception
of the experience of freedom, conceived not as the capacity
to put into practise the true project of God for matrimony and the family,
but rather as an autonomous power of self-afirmation,
to the detriment of others, for one’s own selfish benefit.
28. in third world countries, families often lack
both the basic materials to survive, like food, work,
housing, medicines, and their fundamental liberty.
29. In rich countries, an excessive standard of living and consumer mentality,
paradoxically united to a certain anxiety and uncertainty for the future,
robs the couples of the generosity and courage to engender new human life.
30. And so, life is not often held as a blessing
but as a danger to be guarded against
31. 7. How this situation influences the consciousness of the faithful
32. living in this kind of world, under the pressure of the mass media,
the faithful don’t know how to defend themselves often
from the corruption of fundamental values
nor how to adopt a critical attitude to this family culture, and
how to become active constructors of authentic family humanism
33. The Synod fathers pointed out so many divorces as a worrying sign
of this phenomenon and also the recurrence of remarrying among the faithful.
34. So also the acceptance of merely civil marriages,
contrary to the vocation of baptised, “to wed in the Lord”.
38. The new emerging culture should be intimately evangelized, and recognise
the true values. They should defend the rights of men and women,
and promote justice in the very structures of society.
In this way, the new humanism will not separate men from
their relationship with God, but lead them more so to Him.
39. Science and technical applications offer new and immense
possibilities in the cosntruction of such humanism.
Nevertheless, science, as a consequence of the political options
that direct its investigation and applications,
is often used contrary to its original purpose;
the promotion of the human person.
40. All of us have to recouperate our consciousness of the primacy
of the moral values, those of the human person as such, and return
to recognising the meaning of life and its fundamental values.
This is the challenge for renewing today’s society.
42. We should convert our minds and hearts, following the crucified Christ,
renouncing our own selfishness, and oppose the injustice caused by sin,
which has penetrated profoundly into the structures of today’s world,
and frequently places obstacles for the family, contrary to the realization
of its fundamental rights . This conversion can influence society
for the better and renew its structures.
44. As always the Church accepts every culture and people, and all that better expresses
the inexhaustible riches of Christ, but keeping in mind the double principle of
compatibility with the gospel of the various cultures and of communion with the universal Church.
