the justification of the use of sex which
has been infected by sin.

āIn 1208, in the Profession of Faith
prescribed by Pope Innocent III,
marriage was accounted a true
sacrament.
āAccording to the Council of Trent, it
required that Catholic marriages takes
place in the presence of a priest,

practice of clandestine marriages.

the covenant that God has made with us

11. The Meaning of Marriage
as a Sacrament
ā¢ A Sacrament is a visible sign of Godās presence (grace)
in our lives. In marriage, oneās spouse is the sign of
Godās presence in their lives.
ā¢ The Sacrament of Marriage is actually administered by
the couple ā the priest is simply the presider.
ā¢ The Priest and the Wedding Party (particularly the Best
Man and Maid of Honor) act as witnesses.
13. There are 3 characteristics of a Sacramental
Marriage
Permanent Commitment:
the couple acknowledges that
this commitment is for life.
14. Openness to Children:Procreation
(having children) is a natural result of married
love. The Church values the family, calling
children the āsupreme gift of marriageā in its
Catechism.
āSo God created man in his own image, in
the image of God he created him; male
and female he created them. God
blessed them and said to them, āBe
fruitful and increase in number; fill the
earth and subdue it.ā (Genesis 1:27-28)
15. Humanae Vitae
- Humanae Vitae is an encyclical (a letter to the
Church from the Pope) written by Pope Paul
VI in 1968 expresses concern about:
ā¢ a āgeneral lowering of moral standardsā that
can come from sex without consequences
ā¢ the danger that women could be reduced to
ābeing instruments for the satisfaction of
desires,ā rather than be treated with the
respect that they deserve.

between a husband and wife āretains its intrinsic
relationship to the procreation of human life.ā
What does this mean?
Because of this connection between sex and life, the ādirect interruption of
the generative processā is against what the Church teaches.

marriage (and family) demands TOTAL FIDELITY (faithfulness)
from the spouses.
The Church recognizes the
difficulty of this kind of fidelity
and encourages married
people to find support in each
other and in their faith.
18. Unitive & Procreative Aspects of Sexuality in Marriage
A sexual relationship in marriage has 2 purposes:
1 - strengthens the couple and allows them to
express their love for each other in a
powerful way (unitive)
2 - leads to the creation of new life. (procreative)
20. The Marriage Ceremony
ā¢ The Marriage Ceremony usually takes place
within a Nuptial Mass. It occurs after the
homily.
ā¢ The couple is asked if they have come
freely to be married, if they will love each
other forever, and if they will be open to
children.
ā¢ Then, they say their vows to each other.
Finally, they exchange rings.

27. Blessing of the Arrhae and the Rings
- Ring, Coin and Bible bearers will
come forward assisted by the Best
Man and Matron of Honor and will
stand at the right side of the priest
- The priest sprinkles the arrhae and
the rings with holy water

- The priest takes the ring and
gives it to the Bride and Groom.
- The Groom takes the arrhae in
both hands. The Bride places her
cupped hands under those of
the Groom. He lets the arrhae
fall into the hands of the Bride.

- The male sponsor takes the cruets and gives them to the
Groom. Likewise, the lady sponsor gives the chalice and the
ciborium to the Bride. Then the Bride and Groom present them

side of the couple. A white veil is laid over the head of the
Bride and the shoulders of the Groom. Then, the cord in form

Bouquet of Flowers
This symbolizes fertility and the start
of a new life. During medieval times,
bouquets were used as a protection
from evil spirits.

This symbolizes the everlasting
love and fidelity of the couple. The
circular shape represents their
circle of love that has no
beginning or end.
Arrhae or Coins
The Arrhae or coins that the groom
place on the hands of the bride
symbolize the sufficiency of
material possessions that the
husband should provide for the
material needs of the family.

The candles to be lighted on
both sides of the couple
symbolize the presence of
Christ in their married life,
as well as the union of their
two families.
Marriage Veil
The veil placed on the brideās head
and extended to the groomās shoulder
symbolizes that as Christ is the head
of the Church so the husband is the
head of the wife.

a symbol of modesty. Usually,

grace is given to us. The love of man
