Safety Equipment
Safety is the state of being "safe" (from French sauf),
the condition of being protected against physical, social,
spiritual, financial, political, emotional, occupational,
psychological, educational or other types or consequences of
failure, damage, error, accidents, harm or any other event
which could be considered non-desirable. This can take
the form of being protected from the event or from exposure
to something that causes health or economical losses. It can
include protection of people or of possessions.
Safety Equipment is important for worker protection, as
well as for comfort in your work environment. Safety
gear is designed to suit your work environment; for example,
safety clothing can be insulated or cooling, high visibility,
flame retardant, or chemical resistant.
Md. Akhtar Hossain
Lecturer (CE) KUET

Hard hat
Md. Akhtar Hossain
Lecturer (CE) KUET
How Hard Hats Protect You
Hard hats protect you by providing the following features:
 A rigid shell that resists and deflects blows to the
head.
 A suspension system inside the hat that acts as a
shock absorber.
 Some hats serve as an insulator against electrical
shocks.
 Shields your scalp, face, neck, and shoulders against
splashes, spills, and drips.
 Some hard hats can be modified so you can add face
shields, goggles, hoods, or hearing protection
to them.
Md. Akhtar Hossain
Lecturer (CE) KUET

Hand Protection
Md. Akhtar Hossain
Lecturer (CE) KUET
In construction, exposed hands are
susceptible to physical, chemical, and
radiation hazards. Hand protection is
often the only practical means of preventing
injury from
1. physical hazards sharp or jagged
edges on materials and tools, heat, vibration
2. corrosive or toxic chemicals
3. ultraviolet radiation.
Hand Protection
Md. Akhtar Hossain
Lecturer (CE) KUET
The nature of the hazard(s), the activity,
and the length of the activity determines the
glove selection. The variety of potential hand
injuries may make selecting the appropriate pair of
gloves more difficult than choosing other
protective equipment. Take care to choose gloves
designed for the particular circumstances of
workplace. Glove manufacturers can provide
valuable assistance.
Material Safety Data Sheets also
provide information on PPE.

Face Protection
 Full face protection
 Protects face from dusts and splashes or
sprays of hazardous liquids
 Does not protect from impact hazards
 Wear safety glasses or goggles underneath
Md. Akhtar Hossain
Lecturer (CE) KUET
Eyes need protection from dust, flying debris,
chemical splashes, and foreign objects whether
working in the Construction site.
safety glasses come in as many varieties as
sunglasses but cost much less. Depending on your working
conditions, we carry clear safety glasses, safety sunglasses,
and mirror lens safety glasses. Safety sunglasses can be
like tinted safety glasses, with lenses coming in blue,
amber, green, or red-orange tints.
In a work environment with chemicals, whether in a
professional or educational laboratory, chemical
safety glasses and goggles are recommended. Chemical
safety glasses are made from highly durable frames and
are designed with side shields to protect eyes from minor
chemical splashes.
Eye Safety / Protection
Md. Akhtar Hossain
Lecturer (CE) KUET
Engineering controls should be used to reduce
eye injuries and to protect against ocular infection
exposures. Personal protective eyewear, such as goggles,
face shields, safety glasses, or full face respirators
must also be used when an eye hazard exists.
The eye protection chosen for specific work
situations depends upon the nature and extent of
the hazard, the circumstances of exposure, other
protective equipment used, and personal vision needs. Eye
protection should be fit to an individual or adjustable to
provide appropriate coverage. It should be comfortable and
allow for sufficient peripheral vision. Selection of protective
eyewear appropriate for a given task should be made
based on a hazard assessment of each activity,
including regulatory requirements when applicable.
Eye Safety / Protection

Working at height is generally
believed to be a risky occupation,
therefore anyone involved in working at
heights where there is a risk of a fall which
could cause personal injury must adhere
to strict safety measures. safety
harnesses have all the relevant safety
characteristics you would expect from a
specialist market leader along with the
comfort and freedom of movement to the
worker when using our safety harnesses.

About 1000 construction workers will be killed on
the job this year-about 33% of the fatalities will result from
falls. In general falls cause 15% of all accidental deaths,
and are second only to motor vehicles as a cause of
fatalities.
Each year, falls consistently account for the
greatest number of fatalities in the construction industry.
These types of accidents often involve a number of factors,
including unstable working surfaces, misuse of fall
protection equipment, and human error. Studies have
shown that the use of guardrails, fall arrest systems, safety
nets, covers, and travel restriction systems can prevent
many deaths and injuries from falls.
Fall Protection
Md. Akhtar Hossain
Lecturer (CE) KUET
Body Wear
Body wear is the personal
protective equipment worn by
the worker, such a full-body
harness . Most regulations
governing fall protection prohibit
the use of body belts for fall
protection due to the concentration
of fall forces on the abdomen.
Full-body harnesses distribute
fall forces throughout the body,
substantially reducing the potential
for injury. In addition, the full-body
harness keeps the worker
suspended upright in the event of
a fall and supported while awaiting
rescue.
Md. Akhtar Hossain
Lecturer (CE) KUET
Hearing Protection
In a noisy work environment,
hearing protection is a necessity. Disposable
and reusable earplugs and muffs are
widely used for hearing protection. Noise
Reduction Rating (NRR) that indicates how
powerful the plug or muff will be.
Md. Akhtar Hossain
Lecturer (CE) KUET
Protect Your Hearing
As for construction work,
there are many sources
of loud noises. For
example:
 Power saws of various
types.
 Hammers
 Cement trucks and
cement mixers.
 Power & powder
actuated hand tools
 Stapling guns
 Jack hammers and
other cement power tools
Md. Akhtar Hossain
Lecturer (CE) KUET
46
When Must Hearing Protection
be Provided?
When an employee’s noise
exposure exceeds an 8-hour time-
weighted average (TWA) sound level
of 90 dB.
Md. Akhtar Hossain
Lecturer (CE) KUET
What types of hearing protectors
are available?
Ear plugs
are inserted to block the ear canal. They may be
premolded (preformed) or moldable (foam ear plugs). Ear
plugs are sold as disposable products or reusable plugs.
Custom molded ear plugs are also available.
Semi-insert ear plugs
which consist of two ear plugs held over the ends
of the ear canal by a rigid headband.
Ear muffs
consist of sound-attenuating material and soft
ear cushions that fit around the ear and hard outer cups.
They are held together by a head band.

Construction safety equipment

  • 1. Safety Equipment Safety is the state of being "safe" (from French sauf), the condition of being protected against physical, social, spiritual, financial, political, emotional, occupational, psychological, educational or other types or consequences of failure, damage, error, accidents, harm or any other event which could be considered non-desirable. This can take the form of being protected from the event or from exposure to something that causes health or economical losses. It can include protection of people or of possessions. Safety Equipment is important for worker protection, as well as for comfort in your work environment. Safety gear is designed to suit your work environment; for example, safety clothing can be insulated or cooling, high visibility, flame retardant, or chemical resistant.
  • 2. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET The main safety equipments used during construction works are  Helmets/ Hard Hat  Hand gloves  Glasses & Goggles  Ladder stability anchor  Gas musk  Safety Boots & Shoes  Ear Plugs & Muffs  Harness  Flashlights & Lanterns Safety Equipment
  • 3. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET Head Protection Before After
  • 4. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET 4 Causes of Head Injuries  Falling objects such as tools  Bumping head against objects, such as pipes or beams  Contact with exposed electrical wiring or components
  • 6. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET How Hard Hats Protect You Hard hats protect you by providing the following features:  A rigid shell that resists and deflects blows to the head.  A suspension system inside the hat that acts as a shock absorber.  Some hats serve as an insulator against electrical shocks.  Shields your scalp, face, neck, and shoulders against splashes, spills, and drips.  Some hard hats can be modified so you can add face shields, goggles, hoods, or hearing protection to them.
  • 7. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET 7 Selecting the Right Hard Hat Class A  General service (building construction, shipbuilding, lumbering)  Good impact protection but limited voltage protection Class B  Electrical / Utility work  Protects against falling objects and high-voltage shock and burns Class C  Designed for comfort, offers limited protection  Protects against bumps from fixed objects, but does not protect against falling objects or electrical shock
  • 8. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET 8 Hand Protection
  • 9. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET In construction, exposed hands are susceptible to physical, chemical, and radiation hazards. Hand protection is often the only practical means of preventing injury from 1. physical hazards sharp or jagged edges on materials and tools, heat, vibration 2. corrosive or toxic chemicals 3. ultraviolet radiation. Hand Protection
  • 10. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET The nature of the hazard(s), the activity, and the length of the activity determines the glove selection. The variety of potential hand injuries may make selecting the appropriate pair of gloves more difficult than choosing other protective equipment. Take care to choose gloves designed for the particular circumstances of workplace. Glove manufacturers can provide valuable assistance. Material Safety Data Sheets also provide information on PPE. Hand Protection
  • 11. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET 11 When Must Hand Protection be Provided?  Burns  Bruises  Abrasions  Cuts  Punctures  Fractures  Amputations  Chemical Exposures When any of these are present:
  • 12. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET 12 What Kinds of Protective Gloves are Available? Durable gloves made of metal mesh, leather, or canvas -- Protects from cuts, burns, heat Fabric and coated fabric gloves -- Protects from dirt and abrasion Chemical and liquid resistant gloves -- Protects from burns, irritation, and dermatitis Rubber gloves -- Protects from cuts, lacerations, and abrasions
  • 13. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET 13 Butyl provides the highest permeation resistance to gas or water vapors Types of Rubber Gloves Nitrile protects against solvents, harsh chemicals, fats and petroleum products and also provides excellent resistance to cuts and abrasions.
  • 14. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET 14 Kevlar protects against cuts, slashes, and abrasion Stainless steel mesh protects against cuts and lacerations Other Types of Gloves
  • 15. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET 15 Foot Protection
  • 16. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET The employer shall ensure that each affected employee uses protective footwear when working in areas where there is a danger of foot injuries due to falling or rolling objects, or objects piercing the sole, and where such employee's feet are exposed to electrical hazards. Foot Protection
  • 17. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET Foot Protection The tougher sole offers better protection from puncture wounds from stepping on nails and other sharp objects. The more rigid sole enables you to stand more comfortably on ladders for long periods without hurting your instep. CarefulCareless
  • 18. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET 18 When Must Foot Protection be Provided? When any of these are present: Heavy objects such as barrels or tools that might roll onto or fall on employees’ feet Sharp objects such as nails or spikes that might pierce ordinary shoes Molten metal that might splash on feet Hot or wet surfaces Slippery surfaces
  • 19. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET 19 Safety Shoes Impact-resistant toes and heat-resistant soles protect against hot surfaces common in roofing and paving Some have metal insoles to protect against puncture wounds May be electrically conductive for use in explosive atmospheres, or nonconductive to protect from workplace electrical hazards

  • 23. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET Eye Safety Equipment
  • 24. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET Face Protection  Full face protection  Protects face from dusts and splashes or sprays of hazardous liquids  Does not protect from impact hazards  Wear safety glasses or goggles underneath
  • 25. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET Eyes need protection from dust, flying debris, chemical splashes, and foreign objects whether working in the Construction site. safety glasses come in as many varieties as sunglasses but cost much less. Depending on your working conditions, we carry clear safety glasses, safety sunglasses, and mirror lens safety glasses. Safety sunglasses can be like tinted safety glasses, with lenses coming in blue, amber, green, or red-orange tints. In a work environment with chemicals, whether in a professional or educational laboratory, chemical safety glasses and goggles are recommended. Chemical safety glasses are made from highly durable frames and are designed with side shields to protect eyes from minor chemical splashes. Eye Safety / Protection
  • 26. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET Engineering controls should be used to reduce eye injuries and to protect against ocular infection exposures. Personal protective eyewear, such as goggles, face shields, safety glasses, or full face respirators must also be used when an eye hazard exists. The eye protection chosen for specific work situations depends upon the nature and extent of the hazard, the circumstances of exposure, other protective equipment used, and personal vision needs. Eye protection should be fit to an individual or adjustable to provide appropriate coverage. It should be comfortable and allow for sufficient peripheral vision. Selection of protective eyewear appropriate for a given task should be made based on a hazard assessment of each activity, including regulatory requirements when applicable. Eye Safety / Protection
  • 27. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET 27 When must Eye Protection be Provided? When any of these hazards are present: Dust and other flying particles, such as metal shavings or sawdust Corrosive gases, vapors, and liquids Molten metal that may splash Potentially infectious materials such as blood or hazardous liquid chemicals that may splash Intense light from welding and lasers
  • 28. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET 28 Eye Protection Criteria for Selection  Protects against specific hazard(s)  Comfortable to wear  Does not restrict vision or movement  Durable and easy to clean and disinfect  Does not interfere with the function of other required PPE
  • 29. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET 29 Eye Protection for Employees Who Wear Eyeglasses Ordinary glasses do not provide the required protection Proper choices include:  Prescription glasses with side shields and protective lenses  Goggles that fit comfortably over corrective glasses without disturbing the glasses  Goggles that incorporate corrective lenses mounted behind protective lenses
  • 30. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET 30 Safety Glasses  Made with metal/plastic safety frames  Most operations require side shields  Used for moderate impact from particles produced by jobs such as carpentry, woodworking, grinding, and scaling
  • 31. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET 31 Goggles  Protects eyes and area around the eyes from impact, dust, and splashes  Some goggles fit over corrective lenses
  • 32. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET Dust Masks & Respirators On some jobs you may be exposed to various substances in the air that may be harmful to your health. It is important to know what they are and how to guard against them. Avoid Practice
  • 33. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET OSHA Office of Training and Education 33 Body Protection
  • 34. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET 34 Major Causes of Body Injuries  Intense heat  Splashes of hot metals and other hot liquids  Impacts from tools, machinery, and materials  Cuts  Hazardous chemicals  Radiation

  • 36. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET Fall Protection The standard stresses three types of protection to be used for fall protection. They are Guardrail Systems, Safety Net Systems, and Personal Fall Arrest Systems.
  • 38. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET Working at height is generally believed to be a risky occupation, therefore anyone involved in working at heights where there is a risk of a fall which could cause personal injury must adhere to strict safety measures. safety harnesses have all the relevant safety characteristics you would expect from a specialist market leader along with the comfort and freedom of movement to the worker when using our safety harnesses. Fall Protection
  • 39. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET Unprotected edges Fall Protection
  • 40. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET Fall Protection Avoid Practice
  • 42. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET About 1000 construction workers will be killed on the job this year-about 33% of the fatalities will result from falls. In general falls cause 15% of all accidental deaths, and are second only to motor vehicles as a cause of fatalities. Each year, falls consistently account for the greatest number of fatalities in the construction industry. These types of accidents often involve a number of factors, including unstable working surfaces, misuse of fall protection equipment, and human error. Studies have shown that the use of guardrails, fall arrest systems, safety nets, covers, and travel restriction systems can prevent many deaths and injuries from falls. Fall Protection
  • 43. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET Body Wear Body wear is the personal protective equipment worn by the worker, such a full-body harness . Most regulations governing fall protection prohibit the use of body belts for fall protection due to the concentration of fall forces on the abdomen. Full-body harnesses distribute fall forces throughout the body, substantially reducing the potential for injury. In addition, the full-body harness keeps the worker suspended upright in the event of a fall and supported while awaiting rescue.
  • 44. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET Hearing Protection In a noisy work environment, hearing protection is a necessity. Disposable and reusable earplugs and muffs are widely used for hearing protection. Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) that indicates how powerful the plug or muff will be.
  • 45. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET Protect Your Hearing As for construction work, there are many sources of loud noises. For example:  Power saws of various types.  Hammers  Cement trucks and cement mixers.  Power & powder actuated hand tools  Stapling guns  Jack hammers and other cement power tools
  • 46. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET 46 When Must Hearing Protection be Provided? When an employee’s noise exposure exceeds an 8-hour time- weighted average (TWA) sound level of 90 dB.
  • 47. Md. Akhtar Hossain Lecturer (CE) KUET What types of hearing protectors are available? Ear plugs are inserted to block the ear canal. They may be premolded (preformed) or moldable (foam ear plugs). Ear plugs are sold as disposable products or reusable plugs. Custom molded ear plugs are also available. Semi-insert ear plugs which consist of two ear plugs held over the ends of the ear canal by a rigid headband. Ear muffs consist of sound-attenuating material and soft ear cushions that fit around the ear and hard outer cups. They are held together by a head band.
