“AutoDISE is a computer model developed to simulate the use of DISE (Distribution
Illumination System, Electrical) or PDISE (Power Distribution Illumination Systems, Electrical).
(AutoDISE, 2015).” AutoDISE is one of many tools that should be incorporated during the
basecamp planning phase.
Construction Engineering Technicians should use engineering specific software when
designing anything from a concrete pad in which you would use an AutoCAD type program; to
designing power, water, and waste systems for basecamps in which you would use an AutoDISE
type program. Engineering software programs set Construction Engineering Technicians apart
from Non-Commissioned Officers or “O” grade Officers. Some of these programs also deliver a
useable final product to brief Senior Officers. This will set the Technician apart from his Officer
counterparts when delivering final information to the end user. When using programs such as
AutoDISE, the Technician can deliver “capabilities that include camp layouts to scale, required
equipment inventory lists, phase balancing, automatic connection of power distribution and
power consuming items, individual tent and shelter layouts, system analysis to include total kW,
total loads, and available kW, user defined power distribution systems and user defined loads
(AutoDISE, 2015).” With the newest version (7.0.4.3), users will also have capabilities that
include water systems, wastewater systems, photovoltaic (solar) arrays, wind turbines, and

battery bank systems. These systems also compliment certain initiatives currently being
implemented throughout the DoD, specifically Operational Energy and Net Zero.
AutoDISE will help the Construction Engineering Technician to support an Operational
Energy goal by reducing “spot” generation inefficiency. “Current power systems have severely
limited capabilities to combine onto the same distribution. This, combined by the limited amount
of materiel on the unit TOE, forces a unit to use multiple single power sources connected to one,
or more, loads (see Figure 1) (Department of the Army, 2015).”

AutoDISE will assist the Technician in developing more of a micro-grid type
configuration to ensure that the end user is receiving a final product that is more energy effective
(kWh/gal), energy efficient (approximately 80% load), and is scalable. A technician can start at a
very basic level (platoon size) and create a scalable system that could eventually reach a 5,000
man base camp (prime power, contractor power). This will also assist in supporting “The Power
Continuum” from TM 3-34.45 Figure 1-1 which shows and states, “Prime power operations are a
subset of the general engineering function of the Engineer Regiment. (TM 3-34.45, 2013)” The
below Power Continuum also shows the relationship of a basecamp going from a smaller tactical

level all the way through a large size basecamp with Commercial (LOGCAP, worldwide power
contract) power. This relationship is important for the Technician when planning a basecamp
and it is imperative that the Technician uses AutoDISE to take this into account.

AutoDISE will also assist the user with meeting Net Zero initiatives by “managing
existing energy, water, and solid waste programs with the goal of exceeding minimum targets,
where fiscally responsible, to provide greater energy and water security and increase operating
flexibility (Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy, and Management, 2017).”
When a Technician is using terms such as Operational Energy, Micro-Grid, Net Zero, or Prime
Power, Commanders will see the Technician as an asset to the force and an asset to their career.
However, behind the scenes the Technician must use tools such as AutoDISE to ensure that the
Commander’s risk is mitigated.
Construction Engineering Technicians will ensure that they are an asset by using
engineering specific software while planning projects. AutoDISE is one of many tools that
should be incorporated during the basecamp planning phase.

Test1 CW2 William Test CW3 Nicholas Fleck WOAC 001-18 20 MAR 2018 One of Many Tools “AutoDISE is a computer model developed to simulate the use of DISE (Distribution Illumination System, Electrical) or PDISE (Power Distribution Illumination Systems, Electrical). (AutoDISE, 2015).” AutoDISE is one of many tools that should be incorporated during the basecamp planning phase. Construction Engineering Technicians should use engineering specific software when designing anything from a concrete pad in which you would use an AutoCAD type program; to designing power, water, and waste systems for basecamps in which you would use an AutoDISE type program. Engineering software programs set Construction Engineering Technicians apart from Non-Commissioned Officers or “O” grade Officers. Some of these programs also deliver a useable final product to brief Senior Officers. This will set the Technician apart from his Officer counterparts when delivering final information to the end user. When using programs such as AutoDISE, the Technician can deliver “capabilities that include camp layouts to scale, required equipment inventory lists, phase balancing, automatic connection of power distribution and power consuming items, individual tent and shelter layouts, system analysis to include total kW, total loads, and available kW, user defined power distribution systems and user defined loads (AutoDISE, 2015).” With the newest version (7.0.4.3), users will also have capabilities that include water systems, wastewater systems, photovoltaic (solar) arrays, wind turbines, and
  • 2. Test2 battery bank systems. These systems also compliment certain initiatives currently being implemented throughout the DoD, specifically Operational Energy and Net Zero. AutoDISE will help the Construction Engineering Technician to support an Operational Energy goal by reducing “spot” generation inefficiency. “Current power systems have severely limited capabilities to combine onto the same distribution. This, combined by the limited amount of materiel on the unit TOE, forces a unit to use multiple single power sources connected to one, or more, loads (see Figure 1) (Department of the Army, 2015).” Multiple Consumers Cabling Distribution Panel Distribution CablingGenerator Single Source Power Configuration Multiple Consumers Figure 1: Single Source Power Configuration Example AutoDISE will assist the Technician in developing more of a micro-grid type configuration to ensure that the end user is receiving a final product that is more energy effective (kWh/gal), energy efficient (approximately 80% load), and is scalable. A technician can start at a very basic level (platoon size) and create a scalable system that could eventually reach a 5,000 man base camp (prime power, contractor power). This will also assist in supporting “The Power Continuum” from TM 3-34.45 Figure 1-1 which shows and states, “Prime power operations are a subset of the general engineering function of the Engineer Regiment. (TM 3-34.45, 2013)” The below Power Continuum also shows the relationship of a basecamp going from a smaller tactical
  • 3. Test3 level all the way through a large size basecamp with Commercial (LOGCAP, worldwide power contract) power. This relationship is important for the Technician when planning a basecamp and it is imperative that the Technician uses AutoDISE to take this into account. Figure 1-1. The power continuum AutoDISE will also assist the user with meeting Net Zero initiatives by “managing existing energy, water, and solid waste programs with the goal of exceeding minimum targets, where fiscally responsible, to provide greater energy and water security and increase operating flexibility (Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy, and Management, 2017).” When a Technician is using terms such as Operational Energy, Micro-Grid, Net Zero, or Prime Power, Commanders will see the Technician as an asset to the force and an asset to their career. However, behind the scenes the Technician must use tools such as AutoDISE to ensure that the Commander’s risk is mitigated. Construction Engineering Technicians will ensure that they are an asset by using engineering specific software while planning projects. AutoDISE is one of many tools that should be incorporated during the basecamp planning phase.
