2. OVERVIEW
A Charter Party is a contract for the carriage of goods by sea
otherwise known as a Maritime contract. Maritime Law is a
highly developed area of Nigerian Law however there are no
indigenous Nigerian legislations yet on shipping. Hence, the
carriage of goods by sea is governed by the Carriage of Goods
by Sea Act received as a statute of general application in
Nigeria. The shipping industry is plagued by unique risks that
are uncommon to any other industry globally. Strict regulatory
requirements therefore apply and this heightens the need to
properly manage the contract from negotiation stage to
delivery of the freight.
