"The Giver" by Lois Lowry describes Jonas's life in the community, where everyone, and everything
is the same. A world without conflict, or choice. Your jobs are chosen for you, your partners as well,
no one bothers to question the ways of the committee of elders. You could say that the committee of
the elders is their form of government. Every year during December, until you've reached the year of
12, there is a ceremony for each age as you pass onto the next, helping you age, for example, at age
9, you get a bicycle, it's against the rules to have a bicycle or ride one before then. At the ceremony
of Twelve, you get your predetermined lifelong jobs. Jonas gets chosen for a very important job, one
which gives you a great honor. He is chosen to be the next receiver of memories. He is chosen to
keep the memories of the past, when things were different, much different. The memories are passed
down to Jonas by the receiver before Jonas, who's now known as the Giver. The protagonist is the
main character of the story or the 'hero'. The protagonist makes the important choices and

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to live in a perfect world? In the story "The Giver" by
Lois Lowry, Jonas a 12 year old, lives in a utopian society, and is chosen to be the next Receiver of
Memory. As he goes though his training, Jonas soon learns that his world is not as perfect as it
seems. Jonas and The Giver, the old Receiver of Memory, decides that they have to change the way
the society works. So late at night, Jonas runs away with his brother Gabriel, who was supposed to
be released in the morning. As they run away, they go through many struggles, but in the end they

1. Lina Vilkas is the fifteen year old protagonist of Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys. Lina
has long, wavy, honey–colored hair and blue eyes. She is headstrong, impulsive, and outspoken,
which puts her in danger. Though it is risky, she uses her art to express her emotions and opinions.
She was accepted into art school because of her talent. Lina is protective of her younger brother, and
loves her family.
Though they clash at first, Lina and Andrius Arvydas, a seventeen year old boy she meets on the
train, fall in love. Andrius is handsome with wavy brown hair and blue eyes. He tries to take care of
Lina's family as much as possible, especially Lina's younger brother Jonas. Andrius is separated
from Lina, but they eventually find each other and get married.
Andrius' mother, Mrs. Arvydas is a pretty, dainty woman that is forced to sleep with the Russian
soldiers in order to keep Andrius alive.
Jonas Vilkas is Lina's ten year old brother. He catches scurvy, but does not die. Jonas is forced to
grow up too quickly, as he works to keep the family alive when they stay in a woman named
Ulyushka's house.
Lina's mother, Elena Vilkas, is a pretty woman that knows Russian and goes out of her way to help
everyone. Sadly, she falls ill after hearing her husband has been shot, and dies. Her husband, Kostas
is separated from the rest of the family, and is sent to a prison. Lina attempts to contact her father
multiple times, but it is unknown whether he is dead or alive.

slightest change of weather would harm the members. Though, what does the snowfall really mean
for Jonas? Jonas's experiences with his memories are intimately connected with the idea of snow,

broken leg, and finally to his real encounter with it at the novel's ending. As with many other things
that have been eradicated through Sameness, snow involves the dangers that the community chose

Imagine being trapped in a community and everyone is the exact same. Imagine feeling not special
in anyway. Everybody wears the same clothes, rides the same bike, the weather is always sunny
behind clouds, and there is no color. Well Jonas had to live in the society for many years until his
world was turned upside down. In The Giver, the Giver is the receiver of memory for the
community. The receiver of memory is in charge of the memories of the past that the community
doesn't know about. The ceremony of 12 is when the people of 12 is given there jobs picked out by
the elders. The elders are the main committee of the community, they make the decisions. Jonas was
then given the one of the highest job of the community, Reciever of memory. The job was rare and
only chosen once the old receiver is about ready to pass. The receiver of memory passes the
memories of the past that he got from the previous receiver of memory. The Giver is the receiver of
memory he gave Jonas memories he never knew about. He transferred them by putting his hand on
Jonas's back and transferring them. When his memory was gone and in the new receiver the memory
would vanish from his memory and transfer into the new receiver's memory. Until the new receiver

Just like every other young girl at the age of ten, I screamed and cried for the Jonas brothers as they
sang "Burnin up" on my living room television. But, there was someone else who intriguingly
caught my attention every night in that same living room, her name was Tricia. Tricia, the second
oldest, blonde bombshell took the center of attention every night, as she dazzled everybody away
with her college etiquette. Behind her beauty, honor roll achievements, and being the only member

Have you ever done something that you knew was wrong? If so, it was probably just before or
during high school as an adolescent, when many kids start to rebel against their parents. I guess you
could say what I did was rebellious. On that beautiful, June day, I learned that if you try something
different, like I did with my friend, Addison, it doesn't change who you are, it's just a way of

into the person I am today. I believe that music heals my life problems. I remember running around
in the Blockbuster video store my parents owned, always drawn to the music section. Although my

receive the memories of strength and courage. In the movie when Jonas was escaping from the
community he rode off in a motorcycle from one of the leaders. In the book he rode a bike. In the
book when Jonas is riding away with Gabe he has to hide behind trees and duck behind bushes so he
would not be seen by the drones. He also runs out of water so he has to drink from a pond he passes.

Here they are. The movie and the book have all of the same characters. The movie didn't add
anything or leave out any characters. The book and the movie have the same concept. Like Jonas has
been chosen to be the new receiver of memory. He gets the memories and figures something bad
out. So then he wants to leave because his "brother" is going to be killed. He has to go to
"elsewhere" to give the community all of the memories. The book says that there is no color. In the
movie it is all in black and white until the very end where he gives everyone the memories. In the
book they all have the same jobs as the movie they did not add any or take any away. The movie had
the same type of community as the book. They have the same rules and the same objects. Finally
they have the same memories. Except in the movie they have like a montage of him getting the
memories. In the book they have them all

Summary: The Giver
It was Jonas and gabe just laying in the fluffy snow. They were now way gone from their old
community and saw no brightness in the future. Gabe was now 6–7 years old. As he has gotten older
he has gotten more annoying. Jonas had been growing way too fast. He was also getting extremely
sick. Regretting the past Jonas now was looking for another community. The two of them did not
have any traits together. They both had one thing in mind though.... A new community. Both Jonas
and gabe were starving in the cold, dull winter.
A couple of days later Jonas and Gabe had found a huge house in front of them with a limo pulling
into the snowy drive that had smelt like cat food.
"Get over here harold!!!" a young man shouted.

I dont care who you are I just need you to do this job for me,"told ben the young man.
"Sorry sir I am new here,"Jonas said weakly,"I,I,I will help you though" replied Jonas.
"Ok, your little person their will help too and In reward I will give you meals each day for your
work. Also just call me ben and your name is?"
"Jonas sir, my name is Jonas and this is my little brother Gabe," Answered Jonas.
Jonas and Gabe were now living not comfortable but better than before. Ben would not let them
sleep inside the house they clean and make food for him. He was real stubborn about this. They had
now learned about Christmas in higher definition. Ben would always throw a party before the day
when Santa Claus had came to town. He needed the house to be in tip top shape. 1 week passed and
they were living better than ever. It was the day of the party and Ben had came over to talk to them.
"Hey, umm Jonas right?"
"Yes," responded Jonas.
"I have made a desion to fire you. You may never be in the sight of me again and I may never spare
you a meal for the rest of the time I am alive. On One condition I will give you one last meal if you
broadcast I did all your work and I am a hard worker," gasped Ben.
"Ok Ben,"sighed
