Lucid Dreams
For most people, dreams are mindless shows that are forgotten in the morning, and these shows
rarely affect someone's life. This is not the case for the main characters in Lucid by Adrienne Stoltz
and Ron Bass. Maggie lives her day as normal, but when she dreams, she dreams of Sloane going
about her day. When Sloane goes to sleep, she dreams of Maggie. While this is normal to them,
Lucid shows the strain it puts on each of their lives as dreams and reality blend together. In Lucid by
Adrienne Stoltz and Ron Bass, their dreams affect their identity, personality, and what they will do
next.

The first and more passive choice is that the girls do nothing and stay together. Sloane is seen to be
okay with this choice. She has a more at–least–I–have–a–better–life attitude which is seen when she
talks about the theory that she is not real. She also is less affected by their condition, and only
mentions it when someone mentions her dreams. They might also stay together as they are afraid of
disappearing. Maggie expresses fear of losing Sloane and her family, as well as her little sister.
Sloane also is afraid that Maggie would disappear, or worse, her family and herself would cease to
exist. The other option the girls have is that they could leave each other. Maggie is recommended by
her psychologist to let go of Sloane and tells Maggie that one day she might love someone but only
dream of another husband and kids. This scares Maggie as she realizes that she can't love somebody

technology, there are five steps to Lucid Dreaming. First step is to recall the dream. As soon as

Lucid Dreams : A Lucid Dream
Lucid Dreaming A lucid dream is one in which the person dreaming knows that he or she is in a
dream, does not wake from it, and feels in control of what is happening in the dream. Researcher
Paul Tholey experimented with the induction of lucid dreams in experimental subjects in the 1980s,
and wrote that he developed techniques for inducing lucid dreams that had first been tried on
himself in 1959 (Tholey 875). One of these techniques was called the "reflection technique, and his
experimental subjects were able to induce the state of lucidity in their dreams (Tholey 876). The
reflection technique basically involved the subject asking him or herself, while awake, if he or she
was dreaming; then, it was hoped, the person would be able to ask him or herself the same thing
while asleep in a dream, and thus become aware. By using his techniques, Dr. Tholey was able to
test several hypotheses concerning the content of dreams and the eye movements that occur during
the dreams. Tholey continued his experiments, and in 1989 published research in which he had
investigated the cognitive tasks that characters in a lucid dream could perform (Tholey 567).
Tholey's idea was not that the dream characters themselves were independent of the dreamer, but
that they came from parts of the brain of the dreamer. He thought that the brain processes that were

Lucid dreams are phenomena where the dreamer is conscious of dreaming and controls the dream to
bend the events to their liking. I have had a few of these as well. I prefer lucid dreams rather than
sleep terrors due to the control you have over lucid dreams, sleep paralysis represents the loss of

I awoke to the sound of a thousand sirens. It was only a dream, but it felt real enough. I've been
trying to lucid dream for a while now, and although I'm getting better at it, the more I try, the more
engrossed I get in the dream, the harder it is to wake up.
It's dark outside and it's cold. I can see the moon reflecting off the surface of a nearby lake less than
30 metres away. I'm not really used to waking up this early, but after a lucid dream there's almost no
chance I'll get back to sleep.

What is Dreaming?
Dreams are a series of thoughts, images, and sensations that occur in your mind while you sleep.
Research indicates that everyone dreams, and dreams can occur anytime during sleep. When it
comes to vivid dreams however, these occur during deep, REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, when
the brain is most active.
Some people don't remember their dreams at all – but that doesn't mean they aren't dreaming! It is
thought that most people dream between 4 to 6 times a night, with each dream lasting between 5 to
20 minutes.
There are five stages of sleep: four stages of NREM (Non–REM) sleep, also called SWS (Slow–
Wave Sleep), and one stage of REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep.
One sleep cycle is roughly 90 minutes long.
(NREM 1) The first stage is a transition state between wakefulness and sleep. This is the stage in
which hypnagogic imagery occurs. It usually passes into stage 2 within a few minutes.
(NREM 2) During stage 2, the body gradually shuts down, and brain waves become longer in
wavelength.
(NREM 3) Stage 3 usually occurs 30 to 45 minutes after falling asleep the first time. Large, slow
delta brain waves are generated.
(NREM 4) Stage 4 is often called "deep sleep" or "delta sleep". The heart beats the slowest and there
is the least brain activity. It is during this stage that sleepwalking usually occurs.
