INTRODUCTION:
 Dreams are a natural part of life for everyone, every symbol and every image
that appears in your dreams has a certain relevance, your dreams are there to
guide you and offer you emotional and psychological assistance.
 The way we conceive of dreams, is the reflection of our subconsciousness. We
all are familiar with the term “dreams” but we only consider its literary
meaning, beyond its literary meaning it is a “metaphor”.
 A dream can be defined as a vivid experience of our “subconscious mind”.
"Dreams are the touchstones of our characters."
- Henry David Thoreau
WHAT ARE DREAMS:
 Dreams are basically stories and images our mind creates while we
sleep.
 Dreams can be vivid. But most vivid dreams occur during deep, REM
sleep, when the brain is most active.
 The content and purpose of dreams are not fully understood, although
they have been a topic of scientific, philosophical and religious
interest throughout recorded history.
WHY DO WE DREAM
 Science has made great progress
in deepening our understanding
of dreaming. Still, there is no
answer to the question: Why do
we dream?
 However , there are certain
theories stating dreams are the
result or outcome of the things
we see around us or the thoughts
that we have in the back of our
mind or in subconscious mind.
DREAM INTERPRETATION
Dream interpretation is the
process of assigning meaning to
dreams. In many ancient societies,
such as those of Egypt and
Greece, dreaming was considered
a supernatural communication or
a means of divine intervention,
whose message could be
interpreted by people with these
associated spiritual powers.
SIGMUND FREUD
 The name “Sigmund Freud” gave rise to
interpretation of dreams.
 Sigmund Freud viewed dreams as “the
royal road” to the unconscious and
developed dream analysis, or dream
interpretation, as a way of tapping into
this unconscious material
 The Interpretation of Dreams is an 1899
book by Sigmund Freud, the founder of
psychoanalysis, in which the author
introduces his theory of the unconscious
with respect to dream interpretation, and
discusses what would later become the
theory of the Oedipus complex.
SOME DREAM RESEARCHES
The scientific study of dreams is called
oneirology. Dreams mainly occur in the
rapid-eye movement (REM) stage of
sleep when brain activity is high and
resembles that of being awake. However,
these dreams tend to be much less vivid
or memorable.
Carls Jung-
The basic idea behind Jungian dream theory
is that dreams reveal more than they
conceal. Instead, he suggested
that dreams are doing the work of
integrating our conscious and unconscious
lives; he called this the process of
individuation
WAYS TO REMEMBER DREAMS
There are THREE different types of dream:
 concentrate on recalling your dream .
 record your dream in your dream journal.
 increase the number of dreams you can remember
by waking up more often in the night.
 Concentrate on recalling your dream
 While you're remembering, focus your
gaze on the first object you see as you
open your eyes.
 That object will most often take the vague
recollection of your dream to a place mark
in memory where it is easier to recall
details
 A doorknob, a light bulb, or a nail in the
wall, for example, will help you to settle
into memories of what you had
experienced while sleeping.
Record your dream in your dream journal
 Write down the first thing that
comes into your mind upon
waking It may be related to the
dream in some way, and it might
trigger recollections.
 Write down how you’re feeling
when you wake up. The
emotions you experience in a
dream typically remain, at least
for a brief period.
 Increase the number of dreams you can remember by
waking up more often in the night.
 Since you usually only remember
the last dream you had, you can
remember more dreams by waking
up several times during the night.
 We go through a complete sleep
cycle approximately every 90
minutes, so you may find it
productive to set your alarm to
wake you at some multiple of 90
minutes.
ARE DREAMS MEANINGLESS!
 Dreams can be a matter of great personal
and scientific interest, or derision. There
is good reason not to be interested in
dreams: most are easily forgotten and
usually appear senseless.
 There are two widely held views about
dreams. One view is that they contain
information about our waking life, On
this view, dreams are worth examining.
 The other view is that dreaming is a
delirium, dreams are senseless and any
‘information’ in them is likely to be
misleading, having little connection to
reality: On this view, dreams are best
ignored.
TYPES OF DREAMS
 Daydreams
 Lucid dreams
 Nightmares
 Recurring Dreams
 Epic dreams
 Day Dreams
Day dreaming occurs when you
are half awake, and it is the
imagining or remembering of
images or experiences in the
past or future.
 Lucid Dreams
 Lucid dreams occur when you
realize you are dreaming.
 The dreamer can reassure
him/herself that it is only a
dream and that he or she will
soon awaken.
 Nightmares
 A nightmare is a disturbing dream that
causes you to wake up feeling anxious and
frightened.
 Nightmares may also occur because you
have ignored or refused to accept a
particular life situation
 Recurring dreams
 Recurring dreams repeat themselves
with little variation in story or theme.
 These dreams may be positive , but
most often they are nightmarish in
content.
MOST COMMON DREAM
 Falling
 Teeth falling out
 Test-taking
 Dying
 Meating celebrity
 Being chased
 Showing up late
 Flying
 Driving out of control
 It is a very common dream.
 Feeling yourself falling while you are
dreaming means that you are trying to hold
on to a situation too tightly in your real life,
but you don’t have to.
 If that is so, you should let it go, and let the
chips fall where they may.
 Falling Dream
 Flying
• If you are flying in your dream, then that
means that you have liberated yourself of
a thing that has been weighing you down.
• It also tells us how much control we have
over our lives, depending upon how
effectively or poorly the flying is handled.
 Dying
 Death is often (for obvious reasons) perceived
negatively in the world of dreams.
 It is often connected with some dramatic change
going on in your real life. Symbolically, it
represents the end of something in order to start
something new.
 Falling Teeth
 Teeth symbolizes confidence and power.
 If you dream of your teeth falling out, it
means that there is something happening in
your waking life that is crushing your
confidence.
 Taking a test
 Exams are criteria by which we and others
generally judge us.
 If you have a nightmare where you are not
prepared for any kind of exam, it means that you
are critically examining yourself in your life.
 Driving out of control
• Vehicles and our control over them represents what
path we are taking and how much control we think we
have over the path we are taking.
• If your vehicle is out of your control, it means that we
think we don’t have much control over the current
situations in our lives.
Celebrities in dreams are usually symbols for some
aspect of your personality or something about you based
on your opinions, feelings, thoughts, or memories of
that celebrity. Alternatively, a celebrity may reflect an
idea or situation that you feel is more important than
anything else in your life.
 Meating a celebrity
Being chased
Dreaming about being chased generally means that
you are "being told by your unconsciousness that
you're avoiding an issue or a person," Nicoletti
explains. In such dreams, context is important, which
includes identifying the chaser. "Who is chasing you
matters.
 Being late in a dream as a symbol of a needed
change in life or a hope of change in life.
 Dreams about being late can also symbolize
an unconscious fear of missing an
opportunity or missing out on something
critical – for example, developing your
relationship, raising a family, etc.
 Showing up late for
something
WHAT PART OF BRAIN LIGHTS UP WHEN
WE DREAM?
 The whole brain is active during dreams,
from the brain stem to the cortex.
 The limbic system in the mid-brain deals
with emotions in both waking and dreaming
and includes the amygdala, which is mostly
associated with fear and is especially active
during dreams.
 The cortex is responsible for the content of
dreams.
 we are highly visual animals the visual
cortex, right at the back of the brain, is
especially active,
Conclusion:
 Dream is a product of our imagination, the sum of all the actions taken from our
sleep, emotionally, psychologically and mentaly.it occurs in any time and in many
ways. Dreams has a lot of meaning and types.
 All in all, these ideas are being explained and studied by many facts that brain
penetrates and absorbs everything and dreams become its crop. Hopefully we were
successful in conveying the apt and useful information to the readers.
 At the end we would like to conclude by marking the statement that “a person’s
best interpreter is the person himself, as he can hide things from world but not from
himself, even he can lie to others not to himself; he is a true himself.”
“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have
within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the
stars to change the world.”
