Gender Equality in Sports
How is it fair that a men's college basketball team is able to be transported on planes and dine on
steak, while a women's team from the same college, travels in a van and eats fast food? It's not, but
this occurs often nowadays even with laws passed preventing this type of discrimination. In 1972,
Congress passed Title IX, which prohibits discrimination against girls and women in federally
funded education, including athletic programs (Kiernan 3). Many schools and colleges have not
been able to comply with the Title IX standards mostly because of money. Some of the problems in
high schools and colleges consist of insufficient scholarships for girls, not enough coaching jobs, a
lack of equipment, and a limited amount of supplies. Not only ... Show more content on

Within the next 25 years, at this rate, coaches of women's teams will be nearly gone. Even if the
opportunity is there, no one will want to take it. Another thing a true coach does not like to see is
their team being treated disproportionate to others. When it comes to scholarship money and
scholarship opportunity, women are not given a fair chance to live their dreams.

Young
girls dream of, one day, being able to play the sport they adore for the rest of their life. For many
adolescent girls this dream many not seem at all possible, perhaps because of their own financial
status at home. Scholarships are supposed to provide financial assistance to those who need and
deserve to have a superb education. Scholarships could also be used to reward students for their
outstanding achievement in the field of sports. Women received $142,622,803 less scholarship
support than their male counterparts during the 1995–1996 scholastic year (Wine 2). Women are
merely 30% of scholarship money; that leaves 70% of the scholarship money for the men to spend.
The 70% of ‘leftover' scholarship money certainly does not go to the women's equipment and
supplies.

Determining the compliance for the provision of equipment and supplies
involves evaluating six separate things. Quality, suitability, quantity, availability, maintenance, and
replacement must all be taken into accord when following a compliance policy (Compliance II–7).
Full compliance, in this area, should be

During the transition into the new millennium, a number of factors including new technology, sports
personalities, and originality of new fans, led to the media destruction of modern sports. The media
changed professional and amateur athletics into businesses rather than into moralistic entertainment
while disgracefully exploiting higher education and individuals in the sporting world. The press has
also produced a new set of ideals and attitudes in the fans and players of popular sports (Torr
49).What began in the transition to the new millennium is now an ever–occurring phenomenon that
plagues the wide world of sports. While it is true that the media occasionally broadcasts stories of
unlikely successes and cordial charity, it consistently publicizes the most shameful and less copious
actions of certain athletes and leagues. One of the most prolific examples derives from the National
Football League, which has a substantial problem with regulating touchdown celebrations and
dances. Rather than help control the problem, the media feels the need to emphasize the celebrations
more so than the actual plays. Athletes have engaged in line dances, dice rolling, fake photo shoots,
air guitar playing, and many other imprudent dances and actions. The most notable occasions
(thanks to the media) include: Joe Horn removing a cell phone from the

Turn on ESPN, and there are many female sports reporters, and many reports on female athletes.
Flip through Sports Illustrated, and female athletes are dotted throughout the magazine. Female
athletes star in commercials. Female athletes are on the cover of newspapers. Millions of books have
been sold about hundreds of female athletes. However, this has not always been the case. The
number of females playing sports nowadays compared to even twenty years ago is staggering, and
the number just keeps rising. All the women athletes of today have people and events from past
generations that inspired them like Babe Didrikson Zaharias, the All–American Professional Girls

King was one of the best tennis players ever, male or female. One of the biggest matches King
played in was the "Battle of the Sexes" against Bobby Riggs. This match was played on September
20, 1973. "The "Battle of the Sexes" turned King into arguably the first superstar female athlete in
the United States' ("Billie"). She was known around the world after this match, "30,492 fans
squeezed into the Houston Astrodome to witness the so–called "Battle of the Sexes," while an
estimated 90 million people worldwide watched on television" ("Billie"). Bobby Riggs was a great
tennis player who often made sexist comments about women. He said, "women belong in the
bedroom and kitchen, in that order", and he declared, "women play about 25 percent as good as
men, so they should get about 25 percent of the money men get" ("Billie"). Before the "Battle of the
Sexes", "Riggs hyped the contest with a slew of misogynistic comments, including that "the best
way to handle women is to keep them pregnant and barefoot," and said King could not win because
women did not have "the emotional stability" to play (Gittings). The first time Riggs asked to play,
King declined him. When King agreed to play him, she beat him 6–4, 6–3, 6–3 (Gittings). After
winning the "Battle of the Sexes," King used her platform to fight for "equal rights and opportunities
for boys and girls, men and women...That's the way I want the world to look: men and women
working together, championing each other, helping each other, promoting each other –– we're all in
this world together" (Gittings). She knew that if she was ever #1 in tennis she would use it to fight
for equal rights even from a young age. She used her power to help others that lived in her time and
the future generations. In the same year Kings defeated Riggs, she

Title IX Should Be Banned Essay
What would a parent do if their daughter came up to them and told them she was raped last semester
and the school did absolutely nothing to help her? What would a parent do if they learned that their
daughter who has the potential to be a professional athlete said the school makes them play in the
worst conditions, while the men have the best everything possible. What would a parent do if they
learned there was a law that could prevent all of this from happening and/or help once it did happen?
Those questions and statements are not farfetched or even impossible because they have happened
before. Sexual assault, rape and discrimination are the biggest issues women are facing in the world
of college and professional sports today. Some may say well there ... Show more content on

Unfortunately Title IX over the years has become less and less of a protector and more of an
argument between men and woman. In some situations Title IX has helped and prevailed in positive
outcomes, but unfortunately the negatives out way the positives. As a woman I know I have rights,
but what happens when I have children and I send them to school and they want to play sports? Am
I going to have to worry about her not being treated fairly even though there is a law that is
supposed to help prevent that? Title IX is one of those laws that should be fought hard for, equal
rights should be a birthright but because women live in a patriarchal world that is not the case. No
one should be treated like a second class citizen, no one should have to worry if they are attacked
that they won't find justice, this world needs more people who are willing to stand up and say
something is wrong and that Title IX needs to be listened to and complied with more

The Equality Of Sports And Gender Equality In Sports
Women opportunities for competitive sports were very limited, their sport was considered
recreational rather than an actual sport, due to the fact that they were not competitive and there were
less rules. Title IX required society to acknowledge women sports on an equal term to that of men.
There are students participating in university sports, and these programs make an excessive amount
of money from selling the teams merchandise and tickets. There are apparel lines primarily based on
athletic wear, advertisements that consist of athletes promoting all kinds of things to get people to
buy the company's stuff etc. Although, professional leagues do offer opportunities to female athletes,
the treatment however, of a female athlete in society today is different in comparison of their male
counterparts when it comes to media, attendance, endorsements, and wages. Equality Throughout
history, women were to be seen as ladylike and to be seen as anything else. If they were to work out,
it would only be very little so they won't get muscular because it was seen as masculinity. It took a
couple of years for women to be in on the equality of sports. Women went through hardships to be
treated equally and to be accepted and to be seen as a college and/or professional athlete. In 1972,
Congress passes Title IX for the Education Amendments Act. Title IX has improved women's rights
immensely. requires gender equality for men and women in educational funding. When the

Commodity Chain Analysis of Nike Shoes Essay
Commodity chain analysis of a Nike Shoe
Introduction
Since its creation, Nike has proven itself as a popular brand and it has created niches by selling
products such as footwear, apparels and various types of sports equipment. This paper will attempt
to trace the product development of Nike shoes from its origins in conception and design to the
manufacturing and production process located in contract factories in developing countries to
advertising and marketing of Nike as a cultural commodity and finally, the retailing of the footwear
around the world.
Conception/design The blueprint of a Nike Shoe originates from the Nike Research Lab located at
the Nike World Headquarters in Oregon. At the Nike Research Lab, researchers carry ... Show more

This further strengthens brand loyalty as consumers develop further attachment to the brand when
they are self–involved in the design of their footwear.
Production
Nike subcontracts the production process of its footwear to 900 contract factories located worldwide
with Asian developing countries such as China, Indonesia and Vietnam accounting for the bulk of
total world production. Production of the footwear is based on a vertically integrated model. In the
primary stage, raw materials such as rubber, leather and plastic are extracted from places located in
close proximity from the factories. In the secondary stage, the extracted resources are sent to the
factories or "Sweatshops" for manufacturing. It should be noted that the whole production process of
Nike footwear are being carried out by independent private contractors.
In these sweatshops, workers are generally offered low wages with little nonwage benefits. In
certain factories, workers have been denied of a "living wage" as their take–home pay have been
insufficient to satisfy basic standards of living. Typically, in these countries, the minimum wage
laws were violated and workers were weakly unionised to bargain for higher wages. For example, a
typical Chinese worker earns a wage of Rmb$250–$350 while the minimum wage was supposed to
be Rmb$350.
In addition, labour control is exercised harshly in these factories. The measures to minimise
soldering manifest itself in the

Mia Hamm: The Most Successful Women's National Soccer Team
The United States women's national soccer team is the most successful female sports team in
history. They also are the most winning team in women's national soccer organization. The team has
won three Women's World Cup titles (including the first ever Women's World Cup in 1991), four
Olympic Women's Gold Medals, seven CONCACAF Gold Cup wins, and ten Algarve Cups. Some
of the awards they won off the field are receiving U.S Olympic Committee's Team of the Year award
in 1997 and 1999, and Sports Illustrated chose the 1999 team as the Sportswomen of the Year for its

ABC news stations made comments like, "And uh, Brandi did keep her shirt on, but did take a

The 99er's: Traditional Gender Stereotypes
Society expects males and females to adopt, accept, and accommodate specific gender roles and
stereotypes that have been previously established. In western society, males are expected to be an
alpha, independent, and athletic type, whereas females are typically expected to be obedient,
nurturing, and reserved. Society demands conformity to an enforced gender order. When these
gender norms are pushed beyond its boundaries, it is common for labels to be given, questions to be
asked, and individuals to be ridiculed. While "traditional" gender stereotypes have remained fairly
constant over the past few centuries, they have also been challenged. One specific area in which
traditional gender stereotypes has been challenged is in sports. This raises ... Show more content on

In a 'Historic Decision', the Turkish Football Federation ruled that the Fenerbahce soccer team
would play two games with no supporters as a punishment after fans invaded a pre–season
scrimmage. Later, the federation rectified their decision and allowed women and children to attend
instead. One evening at a soccer match in Turkey, forty–one thousand fans showed up to support
their team to victory, however, a closer look revealed a different crowd than usual. Due to a ban on
men and teenage boys after game–related violence, only women and children were allowed to
spectate. Male fans on both teams aged over twelve were banned from attending the game, while
women, girls and younger boys were allowed in for free. Such measures were taken due to
numerous cases of extreme hooliganism among the male fans in the league last season. "This really
is a historic day. For the first time in the world, only women and children will watch a game" stated
Yasemin Mercil, a female member of Fenerbahce's executive board. The Turkish media did report
however, that at least one man made it in to the stadium, disguised under a headscarf and women's
clothing (Spiegel). This incident shows that men will do anything for soccer, just like

Even though institutions are required by law to meet one of those terms, a school rarely complies
sufficiently with Title IX. In fact, at a few schools certain opportunities have diminished for women.
Since Title IX was passed, women's teams, at some schools, have shrunk due to death of field
hockey in 1991 (Pinney 2). Although it is not required for schools to comply, funding for women's
teams have not been equal either. Money is usually a problem with many things in life, one of them
also happens to be gender equality. Colleges and universities spend an average of $1.6 million on
the men's athletics program. Yet, the women's athletic teams receive nearly half that amount
(Almond 2). Women should not be receiving half the amount that a men's team gets just because
their sports are less 'popular' than men's. A school's main objective may be to promote the men's
team first, to get out of a deficit. Then they may be able to finance the women's team with the
money they make from the men's sporting events. That is not an equal or fair solution. It would take
years to pay off a deficit and then sufficiently finance the female athletic programs. Numerical
equality would take a vast quantity of public tax money in addition to the financial assistance that
now pays for most of women's sports. Universities increased its support of women's athletics over
the years but according to Ellen Voelz,

The Main Character Change In Prodigy By Marie Lu
In the book Prodigy By Marie Lu, the main character, June, changes throughout the story due to the
events of regaining the Republic's trust, the war, working for the Patriots, and slowly finding the
truth, as she is changing from her old life. Although June goes through many changes throughout the
story, she was someone else before all of the events happened. At the same time of the change June
went through, she still was a different person before the events, as on page 64 the text says, "He
goes on, reassuring the people of our military strength and promising later announcements about
changes he wants to implement–who knows how much of it is true" (Lu). Uncertainty is the word I
would use to describe June all throughout the story, as this is a trait that she always has had. June
was used to being so loyal to the Republic, but when she started working for them, she became
uncertain of who they really were. June was always wondering why things were how they were, as
her whole life she has been lied to, and tricked on many occasions. At the same time she has always
had a certain fire, or trigger of anger in her. As she is being interrogated on page 106 the text states,
"I shove the table aside and lunge for him, even though I know I'm chained down to my chair.
Thomas jumps back. I stumble against my restraints, fall to my knees, and then grab for his leg. For
anything. You're sick. You're so twisted. I want to kill him. I've never wanted anything this much in

Women's Basketball History
The History of Women's Basketball "You can't always be the strongest or most talented person in the

Summitt. The early 1990's was both a great and not so great time for women's athletics. There were
some very athletic women who didn't get enough credit because they were judged by playing sports;
it made them not "attractive." The NBA approved the proposal to begin the WNBA in June 1997
(Valois). Many important things happened in the 90's that made the WNBA what it is today. Women

from 1989–91 the Huskies made it to the NCAA tournament game 2 times, but was never able to

Philadelphia. Wendy Basom with the Huskies had a team NCAA tournament record of 39 points,
including a game winning 3 point play on a driving layup where she was fouled with 19 seconds on
the board. Bascom was able to shoot a foul shot worth one point, to win the game 81–80. The
Huskies had their first ever NCAA tournament championship win. Three weeks later UCONN was
ranked No. 24 in the first Associated Press national poll. They defeated No. 2 team, Auburn with a
final score of 67–63 in the Connecticut Classic at Gampel Pavilion. They were within the national

The Inequality Of Female And Male Sports
"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be
denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity
receiving Federal financial assistance" (Anderson). These thirty seven words, known as Title IX,
have transformed the athletic community for both males and females over the past forty two years.
Many wonder why there is still so much talk about the inequalities of female and male sports even
after forty two years of the enactment of Title IX. Violations of this law still occur and some may be
closer to home than one thinks. In 2009, the Office of Civil Rights received a complaint for New
Hanover County being out of compliance with Title IX which initiated a full investigation of all
facilities and programs within the county (George). Soon, a list of issues found in the county was
released with proper solutions that needed to be fulfilled within a short amount of time for risk of
losing federal funding (George). Title IX is responsible for the constant maintenance and changes
being done to equalize female and male sport's programs because of the major impact sports have on
female's lives. After analyzing the current quality of athletics under Title IX, it becomes evident that
the situation needs to be improved because of the positive influences equal opportunity athletics
have on female empowerment and other aspects.
Title IX has a short, but very influential history dating

Concussions Is A Progressive Disease Of The Brain
"Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE, is a progressive disease of the brain found in athletes
who have a history of repeated brain trauma..." (Harris) CTE is closely associated with Alzheimer's,
another gradual, deteriorating brain disease that destroys the individual's ability to remember, make
decisions, and eventually takes away the ability for people to complete every day functions.
Alzheimer's is usually diagnosed around the age of 65 or older as a result of brain cell failure.

with CTE, people who are athletes are diagnosed around forty or fifty years of age. The athletes who

CTE is a problem arising among professional athletes dating back to the 1920's. (Jay Barry Harris)
Many of these athletes, mostly retired, have struggled in their later years with mental illnesses such
as memory loss, depression, substance abuse, and suicide. (Saulle and Greenwald) Concussions are
the most common occurrence in athletes with an estimated 1.6–3.8 million sport–related
concussions reported annually in America (Daneshvar et el). Concussions are the main source of
CTE, however this can be an underrepresentation of the true number because many athletes do not
seek medical attention or vocalize their symptoms. Many athletes fail to report their symptoms
because of their desire to continue playing. In a 2009 CTE review, it found that 46 out of 51
neuropathologically diagnosed cases of CTE occurred in athletes, which translates to 90% (Mckee et
el).
The NFL has not treated injured players properly. Depending on the severity of the concussions
players should sit out for a given time. This could often mean sitting out for weeks or months.
However, the "Concussion Watch Project" by Frontline stated that half of the players with a
concussion return without missing a game. The American Academy of Neurology states that within
the first ten days of the initial injury athletes are at greater risk to cause more damage or repeat the

The Role Of Concussions In Youth Sports
The popularity of soccer has continued to increase year after year due to large events such as the
World Cup and the Euro Cup. Now, fans are demanding more of a show rather than just a simple
game. Due to this demand, players have been looking for different ways to up the ante, most
specifically the way goals are scored. It has been more common to see goals scored off bicycle kicks
and headers leading to an increase of injuries such as concussions due to heading. As these types of
injuries are becoming more common, and has recently been seen in younger players as well, the
question has become whether or not heading should be removed from youth soccer. In Stanley Kay's
article "With concussion reform at forefront, should youth headers be nixed?" from Sports

increasing that calls for the banning of headers from youth leagues. This is first seen when kay

concussions in soccer come from headers. Following this kay mentions how the "brains and bodies
of children are still developing, meaning they are more susceptible to concussions" These studies
have lead to many people to start an initiative to put an end to headers in youth leagues. Many have
followed this movement including former players such as Brandi Chastain, one of the faces for
Parent and Pros for Safer Soccer. Among the opposition another argument has been that kids look at
what the pros are doing and want to do the same, but many parents believe it is more beneficial if

Brandi Chastin Research Paper
Before 1999, few people knew many of the world's best female soccer players. That all changed
thanks to the Women's World Cup, and in particular the exposure of the U.S. hero Brandi Chastain
("Brandi Chastain"). Chastain, a northern California product, was a forward on the U.S. squad that
won the inaugural Women's World Cup in 1991. Injuries began to slow her down, resulting in
changing positions from midfielder to defense. The next World Cup was in 1995, but Chastain was
cut from the team. At that point, there had been talk about Chastain's career ending during that time.
Chastain decided that her career was not over and persevered through recovery, which helped
contribute to a moment that would changer her career and U.S. Women's Soccer (Davis).
In 1999, Brandi Chastain, shot to fame brought women's soccer new levels of success. After scoring
the winning penalty in the Women's World Cup final she ripped off her shirt in a memorable and
controversial goal celebration. Rose Bowl stadium was packed and the US was one goal ahead in

Gender Equality In Sports

 • 1. Gender Equality in Sports How is it fair that a men's college basketball team is able to be transported on planes and dine on steak, while a women's team from the same college, travels in a van and eats fast food? It's not, but this occurs often nowadays even with laws passed preventing this type of discrimination. In 1972, Congress passed Title IX, which prohibits discrimination against girls and women in federally funded education, including athletic programs (Kiernan 3). Many schools and colleges have not been able to comply with the Title IX standards mostly because of money. Some of the problems in high schools and colleges consist of insufficient scholarships for girls, not enough coaching jobs, a lack of equipment, and a limited amount of supplies. Not only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Within the next 25 years, at this rate, coaches of women's teams will be nearly gone. Even if the opportunity is there, no one will want to take it. Another thing a true coach does not like to see is their team being treated disproportionate to others. When it comes to scholarship money and scholarship opportunity, women are not given a fair chance to live their dreams.

Young girls dream of, one day, being able to play the sport they adore for the rest of their life. For many adolescent girls this dream many not seem at all possible, perhaps because of their own financial status at home. Scholarships are supposed to provide financial assistance to those who need and deserve to have a superb education. Scholarships could also be used to reward students for their outstanding achievement in the field of sports. Women received $142,622,803 less scholarship support than their male counterparts during the 1995–1996 scholastic year (Wine 2). Women are merely 30% of scholarship money; that leaves 70% of the scholarship money for the men to spend. The 70% of ‘leftover' scholarship money certainly does not go to the women's equipment and supplies.

Determining the compliance for the provision of equipment and supplies involves evaluating six separate things. Quality, suitability, quantity, availability, maintenance, and replacement must all be taken into accord when following a compliance policy (Compliance II–7). During the transition into the new millennium, a number of factors including new technology, sports personalities, and originality of new fans, led to the media destruction of modern sports. The media changed professional and amateur athletics into businesses rather than into moralistic entertainment while disgracefully exploiting higher education and individuals in the sporting world. The press has also produced a new set of ideals and attitudes in the fans and players of popular sports (Torr 49).What began in the transition to the new millennium is now an ever–occurring phenomenon that plagues the wide world of sports. While it is true that the media occasionally broadcasts stories of unlikely successes and cordial charity, it consistently publicizes the most shameful and less copious actions of certain athletes and leagues. One of the most prolific examples derives from the National Football League, which has a substantial problem with regulating touchdown celebrations and dances. Rather than help control the problem, the media feels the need to emphasize the celebrations more so than the actual plays. Athletes have engaged in line dances, dice rolling, fake photo shoots, air guitar playing, and many other imprudent dances and actions. The most notable occasions (thanks to the media) include: Joe Horn removing a cell phone from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Flip through Sports Illustrated, and female athletes are dotted throughout the magazine. Female athletes star in commercials. Female athletes are on the cover of newspapers. Millions of books have been sold about hundreds of female athletes. However, this has not always been the case. The number of females playing sports nowadays compared to even twenty years ago is staggering, and the number just keeps rising. All the women athletes of today have people and events from past generations that inspired them like Babe Didrikson Zaharias, the All–American Professional Girls Baseball League, Billie Jean King, and the 1999 United States Women's World Cup ... This match was played on September 20, 1973. "The "Battle of the Sexes" turned King into arguably the first superstar female athlete in the United States' ("Billie"). She was known around the world after this match, "30,492 fans squeezed into the Houston Astrodome to witness the so–called "Battle of the Sexes," while an estimated 90 million people worldwide watched on television" ("Billie"). Bobby Riggs was a great tennis player who often made sexist comments about women. He said, "women belong in the bedroom and kitchen, in that order", and he declared, "women play about 25 percent as good as men, so they should get about 25 percent of the money men get" ("Billie"). Before the "Battle of the Sexes", "Riggs hyped the contest with a slew of misogynistic comments, including that "the best way to handle women is to keep them pregnant and barefoot," and said King could not win because women did not have "the emotional stability" to play (Gittings). The first time Riggs asked to play, King declined him. When King agreed to play him, she beat him 6–4, 6–3, 6–3 (Gittings). After winning the "Battle of the Sexes," King used her platform to fight for "equal rights and opportunities for boys and girls, men and women...That's the way I want the world to look: men and women working together, championing each other, helping each other, promoting each other –– we're all in this world together" (Gittings). • 7. Title IX Should Be Banned Essay What would a parent do if their daughter came up to them and told them she was raped last semester and the school did absolutely nothing to help her? What would a parent do if they learned that their daughter who has the potential to be a professional athlete said the school makes them play in the worst conditions, while the men have the best everything possible. What would a parent do if they learned there was a law that could prevent all of this from happening and/or help once it did happen? Those questions and statements are not farfetched or even impossible because they have happened before. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unfortunately Title IX over the years has become less and less of a protector and more of an argument between men and woman. In some situations Title IX has helped and prevailed in positive outcomes, but unfortunately the negatives out way the positives. As a woman I know I have rights, but what happens when I have children and I send them to school and they want to play sports? Am I going to have to worry about her not being treated fairly even though there is a law that is supposed to help prevent that? Title IX is one of those laws that should be fought hard for, equal rights should be a birthright but because women live in a patriarchal world that is not the case. No one should be treated like a second class citizen, no one should have to worry if they are attacked that they won't find justice, this world needs more people who are willing to stand up and say something is wrong and that Title IX needs to be listened to and complied with more ... • 9. The Equality Of Sports And Gender Equality In Sports Women opportunities for competitive sports were very limited, their sport was considered recreational rather than an actual sport, due to the fact that they were not competitive and there were less rules. Title IX required society to acknowledge women sports on an equal term to that of men. There are students participating in university sports, and these programs make an excessive amount of money from selling the teams merchandise and tickets. There are apparel lines primarily based on athletic wear, advertisements that consist of athletes promoting all kinds of things to get people to buy the company's stuff etc. Although, professional leagues do offer opportunities to female athletes, the treatment however, of a female athlete in society today is different in comparison of their male counterparts when it comes to media, attendance, endorsements, and wages. Equality Throughout history, women were to be seen as ladylike and to be seen as anything else. If they were to work out, it would only be very little so they won't get muscular because it was seen as masculinity. It took a couple of years for women to be in on the equality of sports. Women went through hardships to be treated equally and to be accepted and to be seen as a college and/or professional athlete. In 1972, Congress passes Title IX for the Education Amendments Act. Title IX has improved women's rights immensely. requires gender equality for men and women in educational funding. When the opportunities finally ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Commodity Chain Analysis of Nike Shoes Essay Commodity chain analysis of a Nike Shoe Introduction Since its creation, Nike has proven itself as a popular brand and it has created niches by selling products such as footwear, apparels and various types of sports equipment. This paper will attempt to trace the product development of Nike shoes from its origins in conception and design to the manufacturing and production process located in contract factories in developing countries to advertising and marketing of Nike as a cultural commodity and finally, the retailing of the footwear around the world. Production Nike subcontracts the production process of its footwear to 900 contract factories located worldwide with Asian developing countries such as China, Indonesia and Vietnam accounting for the bulk of total world production. Production of the footwear is based on a vertically integrated model. In the primary stage, raw materials such as rubber, leather and plastic are extracted from places located in close proximity from the factories. In the secondary stage, the extracted resources are sent to the factories or "Sweatshops" for manufacturing. It should be noted that the whole production process of Nike footwear are being carried out by independent private contractors. In these sweatshops, workers are generally offered low wages with little nonwage benefits. In certain factories, workers have been denied of a "living wage" as their take–home pay have been insufficient to satisfy basic standards of living. Typically, in these countries, the minimum wage laws were violated and workers were weakly unionised to bargain for higher wages. For example, a typical Chinese worker earns a wage of Rmb$250–$350 while the minimum wage was supposed to be Rmb$350. In addition, labour control is exercised harshly in these factories. The media devoured her up and made it headline everywhere. They took the greatest moment in female sports history, and turned her in to this sexual object. Then headline on ABC news stations made comments like, "And uh, Brandi did keep her shirt on, but did take a sweater off, during warm–ups." In western society, males are expected to be an alpha, independent, and athletic type, whereas females are typically expected to be obedient, nurturing, and reserved. Society demands conformity to an enforced gender order. When these gender norms are pushed beyond its boundaries, it is common for labels to be given, questions to be asked, and individuals to be ridiculed. While "traditional" gender stereotypes have remained fairly constant over the past few centuries, they have also been challenged. In a 'Historic Decision', the Turkish Football Federation ruled that the Fenerbahce soccer team would play two games with no supporters as a punishment after fans invaded a pre–season scrimmage. Later, the federation rectified their decision and allowed women and children to attend instead. One evening at a soccer match in Turkey, forty–one thousand fans showed up to support their team to victory, however, a closer look revealed a different crowd than usual. Due to a ban on men and teenage boys after game–related violence, only women and children were allowed to spectate. Male fans on both teams aged over twelve were banned from attending the game, while women, girls and younger boys were allowed in for free. Such measures were taken due to numerous cases of extreme hooliganism among the male fans in the league last season. "This really is a historic day. For the first time in the world, only women and children will watch a game" stated Yasemin Mercil, a female member of Fenerbahce's executive board. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though institutions are required by law to meet one of those terms, a school rarely complies sufficiently with Title IX. In fact, at a few schools certain opportunities have diminished for women. Since Title IX was passed, women's teams, at some schools, have shrunk due to death of field hockey in 1991 (Pinney 2). Although it is not required for schools to comply, funding for women's teams have not been equal either. Money is usually a problem with many things in life, one of them also happens to be gender equality. Colleges and universities spend an average of $1.6 million on the men's athletics program. Yet, the women's athletic teams receive nearly half that amount (Almond 2). Women should not be receiving half the amount that a men's team gets just because their sports are less 'popular' than men's. A school's main objective may be to promote the men's team first, to get out of a deficit. Then they may be able to finance the women's team with the money they make from the men's sporting events. That is not an equal or fair solution. It would take years to pay off a deficit and then sufficiently finance the female athletic programs. Numerical equality would take a vast quantity of public tax money in addition to the financial assistance that now pays for most of women's sports. The Main Character Change In Prodigy By Marie Lu In the book Prodigy By Marie Lu, the main character, June, changes throughout the story due to the events of regaining the Republic's trust, the war, working for the Patriots, and slowly finding the truth, as she is changing from her old life. Although June goes through many changes throughout the story, she was someone else before all of the events happened. At the same time of the change June went through, she still was a different person before the events, as on page 64 the text says, "He goes on, reassuring the people of our military strength and promising later announcements about changes he wants to implement–who knows how much of it is true" (Lu). Uncertainty is the word I would use to describe June all throughout the story, as this is a trait that she always has had. June was used to being so loyal to the Republic, but when she started working for them, she became uncertain of who they really were. June was always wondering why things were how they were, as her whole life she has been lied to, and tricked on many occasions. At the same time she has always had a certain fire, or trigger of anger in her. As she is being interrogated on page 106 the text states, "I shove the table aside and lunge for him, even though I know I'm chained down to my chair. Thomas jumps back. I stumble against my restraints, fall to my knees, and then grab for his leg. For anything. You're sick. You're so twisted. I want to kill him. • 22. Women's Basketball History The History of Women's Basketball "You can't always be the strongest or most talented person in the room, but you can be the most comparative." This was a famous saying from basketball player, Pat Summitt. The early 1990's was both a great and not so great time for women's athletics. There were some very athletic women who didn't get enough credit because they were judged by playing sports; it made them not "attractive." The NBA approved the proposal to begin the WNBA in June 1997 (Valois). Many important things happened in the 90's that made the WNBA what it is today. Women have been playing basketball for years, but it wasn't official until April 24, 1996. Women's basketball announced "We Got Next" as the NBA Board of Governors approved ... They won in 19 regular season Big East titles, 16 conference tournament championships and 7 national titles, and most of all won the Final Four tournament. This team enjoyed one winning season in the first 12 years of existence. However, from 1989–91 the Huskies made it to the NCAA tournament game 2 times, but was never able to win. In 1991 their record was 25/2, and they were at the NCAA–championship game, playing Philadelphia. Wendy Basom with the Huskies had a team NCAA tournament record of 39 points, including a game winning 3 point play on a driving layup where she was fouled with 19 seconds on the board. Bascom was able to shoot a foul shot worth one point, to win the game 81–80. The Huskies had their first ever NCAA tournament championship win. Three weeks later UCONN was ranked No. 24 in the first Associated Press national poll. They defeated No. 2 team, Auburn with a final score of 67–63 in the Connecticut Classic at Gampel Pavilion. They were within the national rankings the rest of the season. The Huskies were motivated by many things but one thing really stood out to them: their poster. In their lounge they had a poster hanging up of the 1991 Final Four in New Orleans that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 24. The Inequality Of Female And Male Sports "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance" (Anderson). These thirty seven words, known as Title IX, have transformed the athletic community for both males and females over the past forty two years. Many wonder why there is still so much talk about the inequalities of female and male sports even after forty two years of the enactment of Title IX. Violations of this law still occur and some may be closer to home than one thinks. In 2009, the Office of Civil Rights received a complaint for New Hanover County being out of compliance with Title IX which initiated a full investigation of all facilities and programs within the county (George). Soon, a list of issues found in the county was released with proper solutions that needed to be fulfilled within a short amount of time for risk of losing federal funding (George). Title IX is responsible for the constant maintenance and changes being done to equalize female and male sport's programs because of the major impact sports have on female's lives. After analyzing the current quality of athletics under Title IX, it becomes evident that the situation needs to be improved because of the positive influences equal opportunity athletics have on female empowerment and other aspects. Title IX has a short, but very influential history dating ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Concussions Is A Progressive Disease Of The Brain "Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE, is a progressive disease of the brain found in athletes who have a history of repeated brain trauma..." (Harris) CTE is closely associated with Alzheimer's, another gradual, deteriorating brain disease that destroys the individual's ability to remember, make decisions, and eventually takes away the ability for people to complete every day functions. Alzheimer's is usually diagnosed around the age of 65 or older as a result of brain cell failure. (Alzheimer's Association) CTE, on the other hand, affects individuals younger than 65. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... CTE is a problem arising among professional athletes dating back to the 1920's. (Jay Barry Harris) Many of these athletes, mostly retired, have struggled in their later years with mental illnesses such as memory loss, depression, substance abuse, and suicide. (Saulle and Greenwald) Concussions are the most common occurrence in athletes with an estimated 1.6–3.8 million sport–related concussions reported annually in America (Daneshvar et el). Concussions are the main source of CTE, however this can be an underrepresentation of the true number because many athletes do not seek medical attention or vocalize their symptoms. Many athletes fail to report their symptoms because of their desire to continue playing. In a 2009 CTE review, it found that 46 out of 51 neuropathologically diagnosed cases of CTE occurred in athletes, which translates to 90% (Mckee et el). The NFL has not treated injured players properly. Depending on the severity of the concussions players should sit out for a given time. This could often mean sitting out for weeks or months. However, the "Concussion Watch Project" by Frontline stated that half of the players with a concussion return without missing a game. The American Academy of Neurology states that within the first ten days of the initial injury athletes are at greater risk to cause more damage or repeat the injury. • 30. The Role Of Concussions In Youth Sports The popularity of soccer has continued to increase year after year due to large events such as the World Cup and the Euro Cup. Now, fans are demanding more of a show rather than just a simple game. Due to this demand, players have been looking for different ways to up the ante, most specifically the way goals are scored. It has been more common to see goals scored off bicycle kicks and headers leading to an increase of injuries such as concussions due to heading. As these types of injuries are becoming more common, and has recently been seen in younger players as well, the question has become whether or not heading should be removed from youth soccer. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kay shines light on the opposition in he introduces the idea that there is a movement that has been increasing that calls for the banning of headers from youth leagues. This is first seen when kay introduces Dr. Robert Cantu and his studies. Dr. Cantu's research has shown how 30 percent of concussions in soccer come from headers. Following this kay mentions how the "brains and bodies of children are still developing, meaning they are more susceptible to concussions" These studies have lead to many people to start an initiative to put an end to headers in youth leagues. Many have followed this movement including former players such as Brandi Chastain, one of the faces for Parent and Pros for Safer Soccer. Among the opposition another argument has been that kids look at what the pros are doing and want to do the same, but many parents believe it is more beneficial if younger players develop other important skills such as footwork rather than ... • 32. Brandi Chastin Research Paper Before 1999, few people knew many of the world's best female soccer players. That all changed thanks to the Women's World Cup, and in particular the exposure of the U.S. hero Brandi Chastain ("Brandi Chastain"). Chastain, a northern California product, was a forward on the U.S. squad that won the inaugural Women's World Cup in 1991. Injuries began to slow her down, resulting in changing positions from midfielder to defense. The next World Cup was in 1995, but Chastain was cut from the team. At that point, there had been talk about Chastain's career ending during that time. Chastain decided that her career was not over and persevered through recovery, which helped contribute to a moment that would changer her career and U.S. Women's Soccer (Davis). In 1999, Brandi Chastain, shot to fame brought women's soccer new levels of success. After scoring the winning penalty in the Women's World Cup final she ripped off her shirt in a memorable and controversial goal celebration.
