Cause Of Neuromas
What is a Neuroma? A neuroma is a painful condition, also referred to as a "pinched nerve" or a
nerve tumor. The neuroma is an overgrowth of nerve tissue, usually in the space between the third
and fourth toes. Neuromas often bring on pain, burning sensations, tingling and numbness between
the toes and the balls of the feet. In some cases, you may notice swelling in the area where the
neuroma is located, making walking or even standing difficult and painful. What causes a neuroma?
The exact cause of neuromas is unknown but excessive trauma to the foot and wearing tight shoes
that press the toes together is a factor. Neuromas are more common in women, partially because
women are more likely to wear high heels that push the toes forward

Euthanasia And Physician Assisted Suicide
People have different perspectives and views on Euthanasia or Physician–assisted suicide and how
they should or should not be legal. In some cases people feel as if the patient who are suffering from
a terminal painful disease should have the right to commit suicide in other cases people feel as if the
patient is being selfish to end their life when you have loved ones that are going to suffer because
they killed themselves. People feel it should or should not be legal because of right to die, living
wills, and Hippocratic Oath. Right to die better known as Oregon Death with Dignity Act that lets
people feel that Euthanasia and Physician–assisted suicide should be legal in all fifty states. There
are only four states in the United States of America that actually passed the act. As some people
fight for their opinions on this subject it could be touchy to some. There are argument that people it
should be legal in all fifty states because they feel that people that are dealing with a terminal
painful disease could be treated with Euthanasia or PAS which are forms of suicide. In some cases
people that deals with painful diseases feel that they have a right to commit suicide because they're
the ones that are going through. Patients that suffer from the painful illness find that suicide is the
best route to go. Although Euthanasia is where the patient refuse the medicine that could help them
where physicians gives a competent patient medication to take to commit suicide.

Spondylolysis Essay
Due to the high physical demands of the entertainment industry, dancers are prone to suffer from
many different types of injuries – many of these injuries are more commonly found in dancers than
in the general population. Among the most common of spinal injuries is Spondylolysis; this
condition can be caused by a number of dance steps and also has many different treatment options.
Spondylolysis is a very painful injury and can have many effects on a dancer's body. In this injury,
the problem is centralized in the spinal region of the body. Spondylolysis is "a defect in the normal
bony structure of the pars interarticularis that is present in 6% of adults" (Solomon, Solomon,
Minton pg. 88). This defect is typically found in the L4 or L5 and is thought to be partially
hereditary. When the defect occurs bilaterally, the "upper vertebrae will slip forward over the lower
one" (Solomon, Solomon, Minton pg. 88). Essentially, it is a break or stress fracture in one of the
vertebrae – this is one of the most common origins of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, and foremost, a dancer dealing with spondylolysis must cease dancing or any other physically
demanding activity immediately and immobilize the lower back with an "anti–lordotic brace" for a
six month period. In addition to immobilization, the affected individual must adhere to an exercise
program consisting of abdominal and pelvic strengthening exercises, and stretching exercises for the
hamstrings and lumbodorsal fascia in order to prevent atrophy, weakness, and tightness that may
result from the immobilization. In some cases, a dancer may experience healing solely due to
abstaining from painful techniques and following the exercise program alone, and may not require a
brace. In the rarest of cases, spinal fusion is required in order to alieve severely painful
spondylolysis that "interferes with dance activity despite bracing and exercises" (Solomon,

Bareth Circle Allusions In Dubliners
Thus, we find that the early stories contain but the barest allusions to the Ninth Circle, and they tend
toward foreshadowing more than anything else, portending both the general literary and
philosophical thrust of the book, and the development of the characters from childhood to maturity,
especially spiritually. The second half of Dubliners, focused on adults and adult problems, contain
the bulk of Ninth Circle allusions, and some seem so deliberately crafted around the idea of the
Ninth Circle, that one might call them homages to Dante. In "A Painful Case," we find over a half–
dozen obvious allusions to the final three canti of Inferno. James Duffy, upon learning of his former
fiancée's suicide (she deliberately steps in front of an oncoming train), finds himself in a state of
severe melancholy as he realizes that she killed herself out of a sense of betrayal, her betrayal to her
family with regard to her affair with James, and her betrayal by James with regard to his decision to
run away. James ponders all this as he makes his way through a deserted park and along a lakeshore
"frozen in the depths of a dismal December the likes of which Ireland had never before known, and
which all worried it might know forevermore" (source). Joyce writes, "James gnawed the rectitude
of his life" (Joyce 113), which puts the cogent reader in mind of Count Ugolino della Gheradesca,
one of the denizens of the Ninth Circle. Dante describes him as "gnaw[ing]" upon the head of one of

Research Paper On Gonorrhea
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a growing problem in American society as well as across
the world. These STIs are lowering the life expectancy of people all across the world especially in
poor or developing countries. The reasoning behind this is people in those countries often can not
afford the treatment necessary for the infections they contract. One example is gonorrhea, a bacterial
infection that is sexually transmitted, and is a large problem in societies all across the world. It is
estimated by the US public health service that there are "2.6 million cases annually of infection"
with gonorrhea in the United States (Yorke, 1978, 51). The pandemic of STIs (in this case
gonorrhea) is an interesting yet sad reality to me, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Paralysis In James Joyce's Dubliners
Hopefully this Essay is Slightly More Intelligible than Finnegan's Wake: Dubliners Essay "To be or
not to be, that is the question." Hamlet's famous quotation implies only two solutions: to be, or to
not be. However, there is another option that Shakespeare never explored: to remain paralyzed
between the two states, unable to commit to either. James Joyce's Dubliners is a collection of short
stories first published in 1914, that follows the inhabitants of Ireland. Published nearly a half a
century before the Republic of Ireland would be recognized as an independant country, many of
Joyce's short stories in Dubliners explore the theme of Irish paralysis, that Joyce found afflicted both
the whole of Ireland and its individual citizens. Many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the key aspect of modernism was portraying the mundane and average in an honest (and
often depressing) light, so it is unlikely Joyce would have made the choice to have a young narrator
express himself in such an advanced and unusual way. Throughout the story, the narrator seems to
have underlying animosity toward the event that took place. At the beginning of the story, the
narrator describes how his evenings were spent, "When we met in the street the houses had grown
sombre. The space of sky above us was the colour of ever–changing violet and towards it the lamps
of the street lifted their feeble lanterns. The cold air stung us and we played till our bodies glowed"
(19). Even when describing fun activities, like playing outside with neighbors, the narrator uses
negative language. Typically, a memory about a failed childhood crush would be met with a shrug,
but the narrator still has feelings of anger toward this event all these years later. This is because this
story illustrates what was likely one of the the first instances of paralysis the narrator encountered in
his life. The story has value because of the implications it has on the future of the narrator. The
negative tone of the story reflects how the narrator still feels disgust toward this event many years
later because it was the first in a

Livedoid Vasculopathy (LV)
Livedoid vasculopathy (livedoid vasculitis or LV) is a chronic, recurrent and painful disorder of the
cutaneous microcirculation. This dermatosis is relatively rare and occurs most commonly in young
to middle–aged women in whom the lesions are often located in the distal lower extremities and
feet. LV is clinically outlined by a triad of symptoms which need not occur simultaneously. These
symptoms are livedo racemose, painful ulcerations and scars called atrophic blanche. The
pathophysiology of LV is not well understood but the condition is categorized as either primary or
secondary. The primary form appears to show no association with any other diseases, whilst the
secondary form is associated with diseases characterized by a hypercoagulable state i.e.
thrombophilia. Such diseases may arise due to a fibrinolytic disorder (heterozygous protein C or S
deficiency, Factor V Leiden mutation), prothrombin gene mutation, or hyperhomocysteinemia. In
some cases of LV, there appears to be an association with connective tissue disorders such as
systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), cryoglobulinemia and Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). ...

Gonorrhea Research Paper
Neisseria gonorrhoeae, commonly known as gonorrhea, is a gram–negative bacteria found in the
family Neisseriaceae. This proteobacteria does not form spores, cannot move (have no flagellum),
are encapsulated in a bacterial capsule, and are non–acid fast. They are diplococci, found in pairs of
round kidney–bean shaped bacteria. They are small, smooth and colourless with flattened sides.
These obligate aerobes need oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other nutrient supplementation (usually
chocolate agar) to survive. They produce the enzyme β–lactamase, allowing N. gonorrhoeae to resist
certain antibiotics. There are 70 known strains of N. gonorrhoeae, and they produce colonies after
18–24 hours of incubation.
All victims of N. gonorrhoaeae are human. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Infected people take a dose of antibiotics (often a dose of two antibiotics at once) to cure
gonorrheoea. As gonorrhoeae becomes much more antibiotic resistant, the treatment options become
much more limited, meaning even those who can properly diagnose their symptoms are at risk for

Common Botox Myths
Common Botox Myths...BUSTED Botox is a very controversial cosmetic treatment for a variety of
reasons, including its surprising origin as well as some of the shocking celebrity transformations it
may have caused. However, the following myths give Botox a much worse name than it deserves.
Botox is Not Extremely Painful The idea that Botox injections are extremely painful has been spread
around the Internet for ages, probably due to the fact that it is referred to as a "neurotoxin." There's
no way that something with a name like that can't be extremely painful, right? Wrong: while any
injection will be slightly painful, Botox is rarely, if ever, more painful than any other injection. You
will probably feel a slight pain immediately after the injection, which ... Show more content on

As a result, many people have the misconception that these treatments are, more or less, the same
thing. This myth is incredibly wrong: they couldn't be more different. Botox is a neurotoxin that
relaxes the tension in the muscles that create wrinkles. Meanwhile, dermal fillers are actually bits of
soft tissue carefully inserted underneath wrinkles. They literally fill in the skin vacancy created by
the wrinkle. Botox is Not Permanent Aging people who are looking to look young forever often hold
out hope that Botox is a permanent wrinkle treatment. However, that is simply not the case: Botox
only lifts and treats wrinkles for about three to four months at a time. After that, the wrinkles will
start to reappear. That's why so many people start getting multiple Botox treatments a year,
sometimes as many as four every year. Botox Does Not Make Wrinkles Worse The non–permanent
nature of Botox treatments has caused many people to wonder whether or not Botox actually makes
wrinkles worse. This complaint usually occurs after someone has decided to stop using Botox and
allow their wrinkles to

The Jigsaw Game Thesis Statement
Religious Background According to Harvey (2013), Buddhists trust that after death reincarnation
can happen in one of the numerous possible forthcoming existences. This future existence is
normally determined by one's last thoughts the moment they die. The last though that determine
where one is reborn is normally determined buy one's actions in their lifetime. As a result, if one's
final thoughts before he or she died where about commendable actions, then the individual would
most likely find future existence in a happy setting. On the other hand, MacLaughlin 92013), asserts
that the sins one commit during their lifetime may not be the only cause of their rebirth in hell.

The jigsaw killer punishes his victims because he believes they have a flaw in their lives and need a
tough and painful lesson in order to appreciate being alive. Additionally, the punishments for sinners
in the film is for moral purposes. On the other hand, punishment in Buddhism is mainly for religious
purposes. The religion believes that evil doers need to be punished for accumulating their karma and
thereafter their lives are redeemed. The other difference between the film and Buddhism is that in
the film, the whole punishment and torture on the victim is viewed as a game that has rules in order
to survive. The victims have to play by the gruesome rules set by the Jigsaw killer in order to
complete the game. On the other hand, it is evident that punishment for sin and evil is part of the
Buddhism and all followers are required to uphold a praiseworthy life in order to acquire a positive
rebirth. Buddhist are encouraged to take life seriously and commit their lives to living praiseworthy
lives because regardless of whether one was up right or wrong one will eventually reborn in hell.

How it hurt having these memories, physically and emotionally. Obviously, a good portion of these
memories are traumatic and scarring for the Receiver who holds them. Take the case of the Giver,
who has held these memories for years and still suffers with them, is shown to be debilitated by said
memories. Rosemary, after seeing her first painful and traumatic memory changed permanently and
no longer laughed. Lastly, Jonas, who tried to make sense of these memories, but ended up
panicking because of painful memories yet still, no one understood why. In spite of the fact that
there were happy and joyous memories, the painful and traumatic ones still scarred them and made
them react as trauma survivors do. As previously stated, trauma survivors react with hypervigilance,
anger, sadness, fearfulness, numbness, etc. While these memories may have encouraged them to
comprehend certain aspects of life and how to help others, they were damaged them in ways that
resulted in them doing things that ultimately made them separated and made them feel detached
from the community. In conclusion, the Giver, in certain aspects, shows a strong connection trauma

Hume The Paradox Of Painful Art Summary
Why do ordinary, rational, human beings actively and knowingly seek out art that appears to elicit
negative emotions, especially as these same people tend to avoid such emotions in other areas of
their life? This question formally understood as the paradox of painful art is what Hume effectively
attempts to address in his essay 'Of Tragedy'. In this essay I will conclude that Hume's solution to
this paradox; that painful emotions elicited by art are converted into pleasurable ones; is
indefensible. I will first offer my reading of Hume's solution to the paradox of painful art. I will then
argue that Hume fails to give a satisfying account of the process of the conversion he proposes, I
will then go onto show that Hume's conversion theory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hume offers a viable solution to this objection by claiming that not only is our pain converted into
pleasure by the artistry but it 'swells in delight in the eloquence it raises in us' (Hume, 1757). To
explain what I believe Hume means, I ask you to imagine the scientific process where steam is
'converted' into water – condensation. The glass is already half full of water at the beginning of this
imagined experiment and the room is full of steam. By the end of the process the glass is now full,
as what was formally steam has now been 'converted' into water. There is no steam and the water
level has been enhanced by the process of 'conversion'. Similarly, Hume claims, the process of
conversion that takes place while watching painful art not only alters the nature of the painful
emotion but it eventually enhances the pleasure. According to my reading of Hume this is why we
actively and knowingly seek out painful art when more agreeable art is readily available to us –
because it offers us profound pleasure. Having given my account of Hume's solution to the paradox
of painful art I will now go onto offer objections as to why this solution is indefensible.
My first objection to Hume's conversion based solution to the paradox of painful art is that he fails
to give a satisfactory account of the process in which negative emotions such as fear, pity and
sorrow are converted into pleasure. When and how does this process occur? Despite Hume's
numerous examples of pain

Fragments of A Painful Case and Paper Pills
Fragments of "A Painful Case" and "Paper Pills"
Although James Joyce and Sherwood Anderson situate their subjects in very different milieux
(Joyce's in Dublin; Anderson's in Winesburg, Ohio), two of their subjects speak the same language
of idiosyncrasy. In Joyce's "A Painful Case," Mr. Duffy keeps on his desk "a little sheaf of papers
held together by a brass pin. In these sheets a sentence was inscribed from time to time and, in an
ironical moment, the headline of an advertisement for Bile Beans had been pasted on to the first
sheet" (Joyce 103). In Anderson's "Paper Pills," Dr. Reefy records his thoughts on "scraps of paper
that became hard balls and were thrown away" (Anderson 36). These scribbled bits of subjectivity

Mrs. Sinico becomes a willing listener to the narrative of Duffy's life, which had always "rolled out
evenly –– an adventureless tale" (105); he categorizes her as "his confessor." With "careful scorn" he
denies to her that he writes down his thoughts, but he does begin to share them with her. The trope
of the confessional is an interesting one because it implies a guarded opening of one's nature, where
a screen of distance and difference is always interposed between the speaker and listener. In A
Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Joyce captures the simultaneity of self–disclosure and
physical separation in the image of the confessional: "The slide clicked back and [Stephen's] heart
bounded in his chest. The face of an old priest was at the grating, averted from him, leaning upon a
hand" (143). The confessional shows the division between subject and other while suggesting their
potential reconciliation through the subject's confidence and contrition.
Mrs. Sinico draws Duffy closer to the moment of reconciliation where he may cease to live "at a
little distance from his own body" (104) and from the society that surrounds him. She offers him a
medium where he may thrive: "her companionship was like warm soil about an exotic...This union
exalted him, wore away the rough edges of his character, emotionalised his mental life" (107). This
"warm soil" and the emotions it may evoke, alternatively motherly and nurturing or sexually

The Conversion Theory Essay
"The central problem of the conversion theory ....is that it does not describe the way we typify our
experiences of painful art....If the overall experience of an artwork is described as painful, then the
conversion theory is simply not applicable to that work." "It would be odd to say that we enjoy
horror/tragedy." (Chapelle, 2014, p.92) Smuts also points out that Hume gives no process of the
conversion theory; he clearly states that Hume does not give an account of why the conversion
theory occurs but Hume does on the other hand give a vague explanation of how it works, although
not very descriptive. In the defence of Hume, we could state that: painful art is mysterious in the
way that it makes our experience pleasurable. Aristotle also struggled ... Show more content on

If it was not, we would not bother with it at all!" (Chapelle, 2014, p.93) Smuts also states: "If an

that: "It would be plausible to say the negative affect was instrumental to or even constitutive of for
instance, larger cognitive values." (Smuts, 2009, p.48) Hume denies F that states: "Experiences of
painful art are experiences that cause pain, not pleasure." Hume in this case, therefore accepts
normative hedonism which is described in the following declaration: "The only thing that people are
ever rationally motivated by is the prospect of gaining pleasure or avoiding pain." (Chapelle, 2014,
p.94) Consequently, Hume is of the view that as rational agents we seek pleasure and aim to avoid
pain. We would therefore seek out painful art if we find it

Cervical Arthritis Research Paper
Cervical arthritis is a condition that develops in the upper parts of the spine and neck. This is a very
painful form of arthritis that affects a number of people. This form of arthritis may develop due to
age, but it can also be the result of injury. Fortunately, there are specific treatment options for this
form of arthritis. Cervical arthritis generally occurs when the cervical vertebras within the neck
deteriorate. When this is accompanied by a deterioration of cartilage, the condition is very painful.
The disks within the neck provide support and make the neck flexible. The cartilage acts as a shock
absorber so that normal movement is not painful. Most people will experience some level of
deterioration as they age, but not everyone develops arthritis. Those who do develop cervical
arthritis will usually do so between the ages forty and fifty years old. In most cases, men have a
higher risk of developing cervical arthritis than women. On the other hand, women who are
postmenopausal also have a high risk factor. The most common cause of this type of arthritis is
injury. Car wrecks, sports injuries, and on the job injuries are the leading causes of cervical arthritis.

symptoms may not develop for years after the original injury. The most ... Show more content on

Just And Painful: A Case For Corporal Punishment
Corporal punishment has been a subject of controversy discussed in the criminal justice system for
many years. It is defined as the infliction of punishment on the body. Graeme Newman defends the
idea that corporal punishment is an effective means of discipline. He strictly argues that this form of
punishment is "the most humane punishment we have". In his book Just and Painful: A Case for the
Corporal Punishment of Criminals, Newman has two arguments that support his position: that the
punishment must be painful and that it must cast back the nature of the crime itself. Newman
received a lot of backlash and threats on his thoughts of punishment. After articulating the
arguments for this practice I can understand and defend that corporal punishment ... Show more

Some people agree the focus of punishment is deterrence. If I see someone commit a crime and they
get physically punished for it I may think twice about committing any crime which ties back to
Newman's goal of preventing future crime. Inflicting fear and pain in an offender is more effective
than sending them away to prison for a numerous amount of years attaching the crime to that
particular number of years. Prison fails at conveying the message of being wrong and also Newman
argues it's hard to control. Pain is the essential key because everyone can feel pan and has an idea of
what it entails. Prison doesn't necessarily explain what should be done but with physical discipline
(corporal punishment) it gives a chance of correction and apply it to his future. Newman believes
corporal punishment would not only save the justice system a lot of money, teach the public right
from wrong, but also show law breakers that they will be held responsible and get the acquired
punishment equipped to

The Ross Cheit Case
There are two main reasons why the Ross Cheit case and case study by Bull (1999) are considered
to important to supporting the existence of repression. Both cases demonstrate how victims of
childhood abuse are able to suppress traumatic memories of their abuse for long periods of time
from conscious awareness. In the Ross Cheit case, he states that "Two years ago, the topic of sexual
abuse was something that [he] certainly knew nothing about" (Freyd, 1996, p. 6). More importantly,
when he finally reads newspaper headlines about allegations of sexual abuse, his initial reaction to
the topic of sexual abuse was "...And certainly, why are they doing it now? This is thirty years ago.
Why are they doing this?" (Freyd, 1996, p. 6). Ross Cheit's naivete towards the concept of sexual
abuse could be argued to be a result of a mechanism referred to as "repression." The latter piece of
evidence demonstrates the long length at which this mechanism has worked to keep such painful
memories at bay from his conscious awareness. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

loss of appetite, not necessarily in that order, and that lasts to about 7 days. About 2 days after these

through contact with an infected person. This painful virus can be spread through saliva from

Most people who are infected with chicken pox will be advised by the doctor to wait for the virus to
pass through their system, since there is no cure if you are already diagnosed with the disease but
you can by some medicine to relive the itchiness of the rashes. Parents will be told by the doctors to

and relax.
The chicken pox can be prevented by having the varicella vaccine. The chicken pox vaccine

Home Caregivers And Shingles Essay
In Home Caregivers and Shingles
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of three seniors will develop
shingles, an extremely painful reactivation of the varicella zoster virus. Despite vaccinations being
widely available, nearly one million reports of shingles occur each year in the United States. The
CDC notes that "anyone who has recovered from chickenpox may develop shingles...however the
risk of shingles increases as you get older." The vast majority of cases occurs in seniors between 60
and 80 years of age.
While the same virus is responsible for chickenpox and shingles, the two ailments are not the same.
Chickenpox impacts the whole body, causing itchy blisters, or pox, to appear from head to toe.
Blisters may even appear ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The rash makes it difficult to accomplish even simple tasks like laundry, cooking, or cleaning. In
severe cases, even personal care (bathing, grooming, and dressing) may be too painful to accomplish
without assistance.
In some cases, in home caregivers may be required well beyond the scope of the rash. A condition
called postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) sometimes causes the pain of the shingles rash to remain for
weeks, months, or even years. The non–stop pain from PHN makes it hard to function in life without
assistance.
As mentioned earlier, there is a vaccination for shingles. While it is not 100 percent effective in
preventing outbreaks, if shingles does occur in a vaccinated person, the severity of the rash, pain,
and complications are dramatically and significantly moderated. The vaccination is strictly
preventative, however. It does not help if the symptoms for shingles have already started.
With the success of the shingles vaccination, your senior loved one should really consider being
immunized. In home caregivers can help them make and appointment and even provide the
transportation to and from the

Theme Of A Painful Case By Ame Joyce
ame Joyce in his short story "A Painful Case" depicts Mr. Duffy as a narcissistic and selfish man
who is so obsessed with himself that he is incapable of any deep interaction or bonding with others.
The story begins with the description that mr. Duffy "lived in Chapelizod because he wished to live
as far as possible from the city of which he was a citizen" (103). This self imposed isolation shows a
repulsion to his fellow citizens and a disinterest of interaction with them. He seems to be especially
disapproving of people who are unlike himself as he is described as having "neither companions nor
friends, church nor creed" (105) and how he "abhorred anything which betokened physical or mental
disorder" (104). This is the first glimpse into a inherited narcissism so powerful that it has directed
his actions to the point that he isolates himself to avoid any interactions with people he deems
unworthy to experience. The isolation also further enforces his self obsession because his life
consists solely of being by himself and analyzing himself. Joyce notes that during the day he always
"lived at a little distance from his body, regarding his own acts with doubtful side–glances" (). He
got to the point of self obsession where he would narrate his own day: Joyce described it as a "habit
which led him to compose in his mind from time to time a short sentence about himself containing a
subject in the third person and a predicate in the past tense" (). Judgement and narcissism are such a
large part of Mr. Duffys life that Joyce twice describes the symptoms in his analysis of him, which
he believes were only increased by his isolation. Mrs. Sinico acts as a foil to Mr. Duffy's behavior.
While he was isolated by choice, she was left on her own after her husband "had dismissed [her] so
sincerely from his gallery of pleasures that he did not suspect that anyone else would take an interest
in her" (). However she is used to highlight his selfishness, because despite their similar
circumstances, there is a large contrast in their attitudes. For example, when they meet at the
Rotunda, Mrs. Sinico remarks "what a pity there is such a poor house tonight! It's so had to have to
sing to empty benches" (105). This expression

A Painful Case By James Joyce
In author James Joyce's short story, "A Painful Case", the reader is immediately introduced to the
character Mr. James Duffy. Upon further inspection, it becomes evident that this character is easily
defined by his tendency towards misanthropy. Misanthropy, as defined by the Merriam–Webster
dictionary, is the "hatred or distrust of humankind". This trait in Mr. Duffy is demonstrated clearly in
a passage early on in the story: "His cheekbones also gave his face a harsh character; but there was
no harshness in the eyes which, looking at the world from under their tawny eyebrows, gave the
impression of a man ever alert to greet a redeeming instinct in others but often disappointed (142)."
The key statement in this passage is the second ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The pupil reasserted itself quickly, this half–disclosed nature fell again under the reign of prudence,
and her astrakan jacket, moulding a bosom of a certain fullness, struck the note of defiance more
definitely (143). What draws Mr. Duffy to her initially is her general disposition; she acts very calm
and natural, and she isn't too shy or awkward. She points out the numerous empty seats around them
in the concert hall, but makes no fuss over it whatsoever. He also detects her intelligence and
sensibility, both of which are important facets of Mrs. Sinico's personality. To him, the most
important of the traits he sees is her vulnerability. This is revealed briefly as her pupils momentarily
"swoon" into the irises, indicating that she is open to his influence in ways she has not verbally
stated. This is significant to Mr. Duffy because he knows that if she is vulnerable toward him, he can
be dominant over her. The suggested attraction she has leads him to believe later on that "he would
ascend to an angelical stature" in her eyes. He believes that this vulnerability is in fact a weakness in
her character, and that she would hold him in a much higher esteem than anyone else in her life.
Eventually, after their companionship has developed for some time, Mr. Duffy abruptly decides to
sever the connection completely. Though the true motive for this choice is unclear, the decision is
definitely rooted in the dominant status in the relationship

Lithotripsy Research Paper
Lithotripsy is a medical method in which shock waves are used to break up stones in the kidney and
the urinary bladder. After the procedure is successfully completed, the stones pass out from your
urine in the form of small molecules.
Procedure:
In this procedure, you will first have to wear a hospital gown, and lie on an examination table.
Beneath you a soft water filled cushion is placed. Pain will be managed through pain killer tablets or
injections, whatever the practitioner finds suitable for you.
In some hospitals, general anesthesia is given to the patients before the procedure so that they may

John Stuart Mill 's Version Of Utilitarianism
In the Utilitarian doctrine the consideration of pleasure and pain is constrained to ends. By this
doctrine pleasure is the only thing desirable as an end and pain is the only thing undesirable as an
end. Everything else is good or evil as it tends to promote pleasure or pain*. I will argue that pain
should be considered as a means as well as an end and show that this is consistent with John Stuart
Mill's version of Utilitarianism. Conjoining the consideration of pain as a means and the notion of
association of ideas, I will give what I hope is a unique explanation as to why higher pleasures are
so often considered superior to lower pleasures. Finally I will end with a short exposition that may
help to explain Mill's mental crisis of 1826 by using the ideas advanced in this paper.
Pain and pleasure are experienced partially relative to each other. A given experience will be
inherently pleasurable or painful, but previous experiences influence the experience of pleasure or
pain. Relevant for this essay, painful experiences tend to increase the pleasure of subsequent
experiences. I will illustrate this with an example. Relative to getting a finger jabbed in your eye, not
getting a finger jabbed in your eye is pleasurable. Relative to a state of ecstasy, a normal state in
which you are not getting your eye jabbed is painful. In both examples, the normal state of not
getting a finger jabbed in your eye is the same, except for what came prior. In the first case the prior

Gonorrhe Sexually Transmitted Infection
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection that can infect both men and women equally. The
infection is found most commonly within the youth between ages fifteen and twenty–four years old.
It can cause infections to the throat, male and female genitalia, and the rectum. Gonorrhea can be
spread through sexual contact. Oral, anal, and vaginal sex are all ways to be infected if one was to
have unprotected sex with another person.
A woman who is pregnant and becomes infected with gonorrhea can possibly infect her child if not
treated promptly. The infection can be transferred to the offspring through childbirth. One can avoid
contracting gonorrhea or any other sexually transmitted infection by not having sex and remaining
abstinent. Other ways to avoid contracting the infection are by remaining in a monogamous
relationship with a partner who has also been tested and is sure not to have the infection. One other
way is to use a latex condom properly each time one engages in sexual intercourse. ... Show more

Curative Trimming: Effective Flaw
Curative Trimming Step 4: Height difference: In the case of lameness or severe damage to a claw,
mostly the outer claw, the sole is trimmed down a lot more than the inner claw if possible. This is in
the last 2/3 part of the rear sole area (wedge). This is done to transfer the weight from the painful
claw to the healthy claw and relieve the painful claw (Annex 1, Figure 4). This increases the healing
of defects such as a sole ulcer, wall ulcer or white line defect. It is not always possible to create a
height difference by trimming. In this case a block can be applied and create an unnatural height
difference (Annex 1, Figure 5). Step 5: Loose horn and hard ridges should be removed in the inner
claw only in the last part of the heel. Often heel horn erosion by interdigital dermatitis causes the
undermining of the heel horn. In the outer claw, the part where the wedge is made (2/3 part of the
sole) and the sole is lowered (step 4), loose horn and hard ridges around the lesion should be
removed (Annex 1, Figure 6). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Theme Of A Painful Case By James Joyce
A Moment In "A Painful Case"
Dubliners by James Joyce, is a unique collection of 15 short stories that have the recurring motifs of
paralysis, the inability to move or act, and epiphany, a moment when a character comes to a sudden
realization that changes their understanding of a person, event, or situation, but also the four
categorical divisions of childhood, adolescence, maturity, and public life. As you progress through
the divisions, the main protagonists become increasingly older; from young children, to teenagers,
and ending with middle aged adults. The remarkable thing about this collection is that, with the
stories being told by a variety of ages, each individual story can give you a different perspective that

and the doubt that any good will come from the friendship. My passage connects back to the overall
theme of the work by presenting Mr. Duffy's urge to not be lonely, but not knowing how to go about

The Erotic in Joyce's A Painful Case
The Erotic in Joyce's A Painful Case The characters whom inhabit Joyce's world in "Dubliners,"
often have, as Harvard Literature Professor Fischer stated in lecture, a "limited way" of thinking
about and understanding themselves and the world around them. Such "determinism," however,
operates not on a broad cultural scale, but works in smaller, more local, more interior and more
idiosyncratic ways. That is, the forces which govern Joyce's characters are not necessarily cultural or
socioeconomic in nature, but rather, as Prof. Fischer stated, are "tiny," and work on a more intimate
level. In any case, as a result of such "forces", these stories often tend to be about something, as
Prof. Fischer said, that doesn't ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first instance of this occurs when Joyce writes, "The dark discreet room, their isolation, the
music that still vibrated in their ears united them" (111). As with the description of "mental
eroticism," (i.e. "thoughts entangling"), Joyce couches "auditory eroticisim" in physically erotic
terms as well. It is through sound, in this case "music," music which we are told "vibrates," that the
two are brought together, "united." The setting, "a dark discreet room", the way in which the music
is described, "vibrating" and the use of the phrase "united," all suggest a kind of romantic,
physically erotic union. Similarly, Joyce later describes how Duffy "seemed to feel her voice touch
his ear..." (118). By describing a voice as "touching" an "ear," Joyce again suggests a physical act of
eroticism. Unlike, however, the "touching of their hands," which Joyce says Duffy imagines as well,
the idea of a "voice touching an ear" suggests not only external "touching", but because a voice
enters one's body and soul, also connotes images of penetration. A voice, unlike hands, penetrates;
committing the most erotic act of all. It is not, however, until the end of the story that we are able to
understand not only how "sound" and "voice" functions in a "auditory erotic" fashion, but how such
eroticism is responsible for Duffy's, albeit impermanent, self–transcendence. In a passage which

Are Physician-Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia Ethical? Essay
Is Euthanasia Ethical?
Euthanasia is one of the most acute and uncomfortable contemporary
problems in medical ethics. Is Euthanasia Ethical? The case for euthanasia
rests on one main fundamental moral principle: mercy.
It is not a new issue; euthanasia has been discussed–and practised–in
both Eastern and Western cultures from the earliest historical times to the
present. But because of medicine's new technological capacities to extend life,
the problem is much more pressing than it has in the past, and both the
discussion and practice of euthanasia are more widespread.
Euthanasia is a way of granting mercy–both by direct killing and by
letting the person ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

instance, repeated cardiac resuscitation is sometimes performed even though a
patient's survival is highly unlikely; although patients in arrest are

Patients are sometimes subjected to continued unproductive, painful treatment to
complete a research protocol, to train student physician, to protect the
physician or hospital from legal action, or to appease the emotional needs of
family members; although in some specific cases such practises may be justified
on other grounds, in general they are prohibited by the principle of mercy.
Weather a painful test or therapy will actually contribute to some overriding
benefits for him or her, they should not be done.
In many such cases, the patient will die whether or not the treatments
are performed. In some cases, however, the principle of mercy may also demand
withholding treatment that could extend the patient's life if the treatment is
itself painful or discomforting and there is very little or no possibility that
it will provide life that is pain–free or offers the possibility of other
important goods. For instance, to provide respiratory support for patient in

Euthanasi Active And Passive Euthanasia
Euthanasia, also known as voluntary or assisted suicide, is used for terminally ill patients to end
their lives instead of undergoing painful treatments and torment of waiting for death. There are,
however, two different ways in which A can bring about B's death. In this essay I will present the
distinction between active and passive euthanasia as explained by James Rachels in his article called
"Active and Passive Euthanasia". I will also debate whether euthanasia is justified or not by
presenting arguments both pro and against euthanasia including pain and financial burden as
justifications for euthanasia and abuse of rights as against euthanasia.
The major distinction described by Rachels would be, simply put, killing and letting die. ... Show

Rachels argues "To begin with a familiar type of situation, a patient who is dying of incurable cancer
of the throat is in terrible pain... This fact provides strong reason for thinking that... active
euthanasia is actually preferable to passive euthanasia, rather than the reverse." (Rachels, 78)
Rachels argument is that there is no moral difference between actively killing a patient and passively
allowing the patient to die.
For example, killing Joan benefits Bill. Whether Bill kills him directly or lets him die doesn't affect
the morality of the situation. Thus, both the situations would be considered equally immoral. The
conclusion following the example above would be that there is no difference between killing (active
euthanasia) and letting die (passive euthanasia). According to Rachels, accepting that there is a
distinction between active and passive euthanasia would result in decisions about life and death
being made on irrelevant grounds. For example, autistic infants sometimes have correctable
secondary problems, such as having an intestinal obstruction; but decisions are made to forego
corrective surgery (and thus let the infant die) simply because the parents do not want the burden of
having an autistic child. In Rachels opinion, passive euthanasia may generally be preferable to
active euthanasia which doesn't seem right. Being allowed to die can be an incredibly painful
process. A lethal injection, however, is less painful. Assuming a terminally ill

Essay The Death of Mrs. Sinico in "a Painful Case"
Mrs. Sinico's character is not the main character in the story. We read the story mostly from the
point of view, thoughts and inspirations of Mr. Duffy, thus he is the main source through which we
can observe her character, along side with other sources, such as her family and after her death, from
a newspaper article and witnesses: " The deceased had been in the habit of crossing the lines late at
night from platform to platform...", "Captain Sinico, of Leoville, Sydney Parade, husband of the

From his description of her face, we get a glimpse of their entire relationship. "Her face, which must

her intellect – the base of their later relationship. He also notices the fact that "she seemed so little
awkward" (120). He notices in her eyes "a defiant note" but also "a temperament of great
sensibility" (120). The way her eyes are described, as if a battle is happening there, suggests maybe
on an uneven person, maybe a clue to what will come later in her death. We know that she is married
and has a daughter. We learn that she is alone most of the time "As the husband was often away and
the daughter out giving music lessons..." (121), and that the relationship between her and her
husband is not close: "Captain Sinico encouraged his visits... He had dismissed his wife so
sincerely" (121). From his description of their relationship in the newspaper article "had lived
happily", we understand how oblivious he was to the fact that she wasn't happy.
Mr. Duffy and Mrs. Sinico's relationship begins from an accidental meeting in the theater. Joyce
describes their relationship on two levels. Mrs. Sinico is the one who first addresses him, and Mr.
Duffy "took [her] remark as an invitation to talk" (120), and by their second meeting he "seized the

Drug Patterns In Medical Patients
The length of time it takes for the inmate to reach the point of death can be anywhere from thirty
minutes to a few hours. It can be difficult to find a vein to inject the drugs into, it can be a longer
process than needed just to find a vein in someone's arm. Inmates with drug habits can be especially
difficult to find a vein that is useable. There has been several cases where it took up to an hour just
to find a vein. This is unacceptable because there was not a proper medical doctor doing this, so it
took longer than it should have. There has also been incidents where it took two attempts to do the
execution. This, again, is from not having a proper medical doctor. Most people believe that
prisoners should die a slow and painful death.

Master Argument On Death
Death is an inevitable event that every human being will experience some time in his or her life. It is
something that most people try to avoid talking about, and avoiding in general. Some people do not
want to not die because of fear from different things, such as emotional distress on family members,
suffering, and in some cases, the fear of the Afterlife. However, as the Epicureans point out, fearing
death is not rational, since it is not bad for us. In this paper, I will be discussing how Hedonism is
not bad for an individual. I will be arguing against those who reject premise B2 from the Master
Argument on Death. My position is that death is not rational to fear. This structure of the paper is
that I will quickly introduce the Master Argument, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For premise B2, it states that there is no more suffering, just peace with oneself. Some might say
that is not true, because they might believe that in the Afterlife there will be painful punishments for
those who committed sins. In order for those who reject B2, they have to understand Epicurus's
definition of death. "Epicurus claims that death is not the process of dying. Dying is something
leading to death, but not death itself. Also, he did not mean the moment of death either." (Epicurus'
Death Argument). The moment of death is what most religious people believe is the Afterlife, and
being dead is leading up to the moment of the Afterlife when we may or may not experience that.
Once we have understood that, then we can argue against those who reject B2, by saying that the
only bad things for you are painful sensations. Quoted by Epicurus, "death is nothing to us; for that
which is dissolved is with out sensation; and which lacks sensation is nothing to us" (128). When we
are dead, we do not feel anything at all. It is just a state of non–existence, with complete and total
serenity. It is a moment in time when you feel nothing. After that moment has passed, is when the
next phase in the Afterlife begins. Therefore, death is not bad for you because it is a moment of non–
existence and is painless, and thus you should not fear

Theme Of Beauty In The Wanderer
Throughout life, one will endure hardship numerous times. It is unavoidable and inevitable;
however, positives can always be taken from the hardship. Not only can life lessons be ingrained in
the mind, but, almost always, beauty can be created from hardship. This is most definitely the case
in three elegies from The Exeter Book, titled "The Seafarer," "The Wife's Lament," and "The
Wanderer," which all share a theme of exile, even though it appears in different ways. In "The
Seafarer," it appears through the wretchedness of the narrator, in "The Wife's Lament," it appears
through the anger of the narrator, and, lastly, in "The Wanderer," it appears through loneliness and
the melancholy attitude of the narrator. Theme is not the only thing that the elegies share, through
the utilization of imagery, creating powerful feelings, or personification, all three elegies create
beauty out of a painful experience. Even though a theme of exile appears differently in all three
elegies, through utilization of these writing enhancements, each creates beauty out of a painful
experience. The first way all three elegies create beauty out of a painful experience is through the
use of imagery. In "The Seafarer" when the narrator speaks of his exile and the pain it gives him, the
aesthetic imagery creates beauty and helps the reader picture and feel what the narrator is
experiencing. The elegy states, "How wretched I was, drifting through winter/On an ice–cold sea,

James Joyce 's A Painful Case
What does the story signify?
James Joyce 's short story, A Painful Case, signifies the dramatic isolation inflicted on man by his
own human nature, which leads to a life best described as an "an adventure–less tale".
How does it signify this?
A Painful Case signifies the woes of self–inflicted isolation through the characterization of the main
character, Mr. Duffy. The short story opens by conversing Mr. Duffy 's choice to "live as far as
possible from the city of which he was a citizen... he found the other suburbs... mean, modern and
pretentious". This can be interpreted that he chooses to live far away from his true self. For the sake
of isolation he wishes to separate pieces of himself in terms of what he liked and what he didn 't,
further opening himself up to the utmost scrutiny on his own part. It can be suggested that by having
Mr. Duffy maintain such an "autobiographical habit" that he would "compose in his mind a short
sentence about himself", that he can ultimately recognize particular attributes of his character which
distressed himself into isolation.
Mr. Duffy, perceived in vivid physical description, is illustrated by words such as "harsh" and
"unamiable"; by following the notion that physical attributes can be directly evident of internal
characteristics, it can be argued that Mr. Duffy is rugged and closed off from the outside world. His
scrutiny is furthered in how his eyes relay a sense of him being "alert to greet a redeeming instinct in
others but often

See Your Podiatrist For Help With Gout Pain –These Are Some Treatments That Might Help Gout is
a very painful condition that often afflicts the joint in your big toe. While the big toe joint is usually
the first joint to show signs of gout, the condition can also eventually affect other joints in your feet
and ankles. This can make walking extremely painful and difficult. If you think you have gout, you
should see a podiatrist for an evaluation of your feet so you can get a diagnosis and proper
treatment. Here are some treatments that might help. Medications Medication may be necessary to
help an acute case of gout. Gout tends to come and go, and you may have periods where the pain is
minimal and times when the joint becomes inflamed, red, and so painful you can barely walk. Anti–
inflammatory drugs may help during a flare up by reducing swelling in the joint. Colchicine drugs
are also used to treat gout. These drugs help reduce pain in your joint. You may be put on a low
maintenance dose and then given a higher dose during an acute attack. Corticosteroid drugs may
also be given orally or injected into the joint. Steroids help reduce swelling to relieve pain. Gout is
caused by uric acid crystals accumulating in the joint. Some drugs work by decreasing your body's
production of these crystals and other drugs help your kidneys get rid of them more efficiently.

Symptoms that show a possible endometriosis are pelvic pain of significant intensity, painful periods
and also painful urination during periods, pain during sexual activity and others.

Cause Of Neuromas

  • 1. Cause Of Neuromas What is a Neuroma? A neuroma is a painful condition, also referred to as a "pinched nerve" or a nerve tumor. The neuroma is an overgrowth of nerve tissue, usually in the space between the third and fourth toes. Neuromas often bring on pain, burning sensations, tingling and numbness between the toes and the balls of the feet. In some cases, you may notice swelling in the area where the neuroma is located, making walking or even standing difficult and painful. What causes a neuroma? The exact cause of neuromas is unknown but excessive trauma to the foot and wearing tight shoes that press the toes together is a factor. Neuromas are more common in women, partially because women are more likely to wear high heels that push the toes forward ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Euthanasia And Physician Assisted Suicide People have different perspectives and views on Euthanasia or Physician–assisted suicide and how they should or should not be legal. In some cases people feel as if the patient who are suffering from a terminal painful disease should have the right to commit suicide in other cases people feel as if the patient is being selfish to end their life when you have loved ones that are going to suffer because they killed themselves. People feel it should or should not be legal because of right to die, living wills, and Hippocratic Oath. Right to die better known as Oregon Death with Dignity Act that lets people feel that Euthanasia and Physician–assisted suicide should be legal in all fifty states. There are only four states in the United States of America that actually passed the act. As some people fight for their opinions on this subject it could be touchy to some. There are argument that people it should be legal in all fifty states because they feel that people that are dealing with a terminal painful disease could be treated with Euthanasia or PAS which are forms of suicide. In some cases people that deals with painful diseases feel that they have a right to commit suicide because they're the ones that are going through. Patients that suffer from the painful illness find that suicide is the best route to go. Although Euthanasia is where the patient refuse the medicine that could help them where physicians gives a competent patient medication to take to commit suicide. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Spondylolysis Essay Due to the high physical demands of the entertainment industry, dancers are prone to suffer from many different types of injuries – many of these injuries are more commonly found in dancers than in the general population. Among the most common of spinal injuries is Spondylolysis; this condition can be caused by a number of dance steps and also has many different treatment options. Spondylolysis is a very painful injury and can have many effects on a dancer's body. In this injury, the problem is centralized in the spinal region of the body. Spondylolysis is "a defect in the normal bony structure of the pars interarticularis that is present in 6% of adults" (Solomon, Solomon, Minton pg. 88). This defect is typically found in the L4 or L5 and is thought to be partially hereditary. When the defect occurs bilaterally, the "upper vertebrae will slip forward over the lower one" (Solomon, Solomon, Minton pg. 88). Essentially, it is a break or stress fracture in one of the vertebrae – this is one of the most common origins of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First, and foremost, a dancer dealing with spondylolysis must cease dancing or any other physically demanding activity immediately and immobilize the lower back with an "anti–lordotic brace" for a six month period. In addition to immobilization, the affected individual must adhere to an exercise program consisting of abdominal and pelvic strengthening exercises, and stretching exercises for the hamstrings and lumbodorsal fascia in order to prevent atrophy, weakness, and tightness that may result from the immobilization. In some cases, a dancer may experience healing solely due to abstaining from painful techniques and following the exercise program alone, and may not require a brace. In the rarest of cases, spinal fusion is required in order to alieve severely painful spondylolysis that "interferes with dance activity despite bracing and exercises" (Solomon, Solomon, Minton pg. ... • 7. Bareth Circle Allusions In Dubliners Thus, we find that the early stories contain but the barest allusions to the Ninth Circle, and they tend toward foreshadowing more than anything else, portending both the general literary and philosophical thrust of the book, and the development of the characters from childhood to maturity, especially spiritually. The second half of Dubliners, focused on adults and adult problems, contain the bulk of Ninth Circle allusions, and some seem so deliberately crafted around the idea of the Ninth Circle, that one might call them homages to Dante. In "A Painful Case," we find over a half– dozen obvious allusions to the final three canti of Inferno. James Duffy, upon learning of his former fiancée's suicide (she deliberately steps in front of an oncoming train), finds himself in a state of severe melancholy as he realizes that she killed herself out of a sense of betrayal, her betrayal to her family with regard to her affair with James, and her betrayal by James with regard to his decision to run away. James ponders all this as he makes his way through a deserted park and along a lakeshore "frozen in the depths of a dismal December the likes of which Ireland had never before known, and which all worried it might know forevermore" (source). Joyce writes, "James gnawed the rectitude of his life" (Joyce 113), which puts the cogent reader in mind of Count Ugolino della Gheradesca, one of the denizens of the Ninth Circle. Dante describes him as "gnaw[ing]" upon the head of one of his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Research Paper On Gonorrhea Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a growing problem in American society as well as across the world. These STIs are lowering the life expectancy of people all across the world especially in poor or developing countries. The reasoning behind this is people in those countries often can not afford the treatment necessary for the infections they contract. One example is gonorrhea, a bacterial infection that is sexually transmitted, and is a large problem in societies all across the world. It is estimated by the US public health service that there are "2.6 million cases annually of infection" with gonorrhea in the United States (Yorke, 1978, 51). The pandemic of STIs (in this case gonorrhea) is an interesting yet sad reality to me, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Louis Giglio once said that "awareness creates action which leads to change, and one without the other cannot be successful. You bringing awareness to something might be the spark that someone else needs to then move to action to create change." I fully believe that the more people are aware of the dangers and risks involved in things such as sexually transmitted diseases it with spark a fire to put an end to the preventable deaths caused by such disease, and it is my goal to use this information in my life to cause ... • 11. Paralysis In James Joyce's Dubliners Hopefully this Essay is Slightly More Intelligible than Finnegan's Wake: Dubliners Essay "To be or not to be, that is the question." Hamlet's famous quotation implies only two solutions: to be, or to not be. However, there is another option that Shakespeare never explored: to remain paralyzed between the two states, unable to commit to either. James Joyce's Dubliners is a collection of short stories first published in 1914, that follows the inhabitants of Ireland. Published nearly a half a century before the Republic of Ireland would be recognized as an independant country, many of Joyce's short stories in Dubliners explore the theme of Irish paralysis, that Joyce found afflicted both the whole of Ireland and its individual citizens. Many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the key aspect of modernism was portraying the mundane and average in an honest (and often depressing) light, so it is unlikely Joyce would have made the choice to have a young narrator express himself in such an advanced and unusual way. Throughout the story, the narrator seems to have underlying animosity toward the event that took place. At the beginning of the story, the narrator describes how his evenings were spent, "When we met in the street the houses had grown sombre. The space of sky above us was the colour of ever–changing violet and towards it the lamps of the street lifted their feeble lanterns. The cold air stung us and we played till our bodies glowed" (19). Even when describing fun activities, like playing outside with neighbors, the narrator uses negative language. Typically, a memory about a failed childhood crush would be met with a shrug, but the narrator still has feelings of anger toward this event all these years later. This is because this story illustrates what was likely one of the the first instances of paralysis the narrator encountered in his life. The story has value because of the implications it has on the future of the narrator. The negative tone of the story reflects how the narrator still feels disgust toward this event many years later because it was the first in a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Livedoid Vasculopathy (LV) Livedoid vasculopathy (livedoid vasculitis or LV) is a chronic, recurrent and painful disorder of the cutaneous microcirculation. This dermatosis is relatively rare and occurs most commonly in young to middle–aged women in whom the lesions are often located in the distal lower extremities and feet. LV is clinically outlined by a triad of symptoms which need not occur simultaneously. These symptoms are livedo racemose, painful ulcerations and scars called atrophic blanche. The pathophysiology of LV is not well understood but the condition is categorized as either primary or secondary. The primary form appears to show no association with any other diseases, whilst the secondary form is associated with diseases characterized by a hypercoagulable state i.e. thrombophilia. Such diseases may arise due to a fibrinolytic disorder (heterozygous protein C or S deficiency, Factor V Leiden mutation), prothrombin gene mutation, or hyperhomocysteinemia. In some cases of LV, there appears to be an association with connective tissue disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), cryoglobulinemia and Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). ... • 15. Gonorrhea Research Paper Neisseria gonorrhoeae, commonly known as gonorrhea, is a gram–negative bacteria found in the family Neisseriaceae. This proteobacteria does not form spores, cannot move (have no flagellum), are encapsulated in a bacterial capsule, and are non–acid fast. They are diplococci, found in pairs of round kidney–bean shaped bacteria. They are small, smooth and colourless with flattened sides. These obligate aerobes need oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other nutrient supplementation (usually chocolate agar) to survive. They produce the enzyme β–lactamase, allowing N. gonorrhoeae to resist certain antibiotics. There are 70 known strains of N. gonorrhoeae, and they produce colonies after 18–24 hours of incubation. All victims of N. gonorrhoaeae are human. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In females, the organs most affected are the cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, and urethra. • 17. Common Botox Myths Common Botox Myths...BUSTED Botox is a very controversial cosmetic treatment for a variety of reasons, including its surprising origin as well as some of the shocking celebrity transformations it may have caused. However, the following myths give Botox a much worse name than it deserves. Botox is Not Extremely Painful The idea that Botox injections are extremely painful has been spread around the Internet for ages, probably due to the fact that it is referred to as a "neurotoxin." There's no way that something with a name like that can't be extremely painful, right? Wrong: while any injection will be slightly painful, Botox is rarely, if ever, more painful than any other injection. You will probably feel a slight pain immediately after the injection, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result, many people have the misconception that these treatments are, more or less, the same thing. This myth is incredibly wrong: they couldn't be more different. Botox is a neurotoxin that relaxes the tension in the muscles that create wrinkles. Meanwhile, dermal fillers are actually bits of soft tissue carefully inserted underneath wrinkles. They literally fill in the skin vacancy created by the wrinkle. Botox is Not Permanent Aging people who are looking to look young forever often hold out hope that Botox is a permanent wrinkle treatment. However, that is simply not the case: Botox only lifts and treats wrinkles for about three to four months at a time. After that, the wrinkles will start to reappear. That's why so many people start getting multiple Botox treatments a year, sometimes as many as four every year. Botox Does Not Make Wrinkles Worse The non–permanent nature of Botox treatments has caused many people to wonder whether or not Botox actually makes wrinkles worse. This complaint usually occurs after someone has decided to stop using Botox and allow their wrinkles to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. The Jigsaw Game Thesis Statement Religious Background According to Harvey (2013), Buddhists trust that after death reincarnation can happen in one of the numerous possible forthcoming existences. This future existence is normally determined by one's last thoughts the moment they die. The last though that determine where one is reborn is normally determined buy one's actions in their lifetime. As a result, if one's final thoughts before he or she died where about commendable actions, then the individual would most likely find future existence in a happy setting. On the other hand, MacLaughlin 92013), asserts that the sins one commit during their lifetime may not be the only cause of their rebirth in hell. The jigsaw killer punishes his victims because he believes they have a flaw in their lives and need a tough and painful lesson in order to appreciate being alive. Additionally, the punishments for sinners in the film is for moral purposes. On the other hand, punishment in Buddhism is mainly for religious purposes. The religion believes that evil doers need to be punished for accumulating their karma and thereafter their lives are redeemed. The other difference between the film and Buddhism is that in the film, the whole punishment and torture on the victim is viewed as a game that has rules in order to survive. The victims have to play by the gruesome rules set by the Jigsaw killer in order to complete the game. On the other hand, it is evident that punishment for sin and evil is part of the Buddhism and all followers are required to uphold a praiseworthy life in order to acquire a positive rebirth. Its symptoms include having unwanted thoughts or nightmares, feel like you're reliving it, flashbacks, emotional/physical response to reminders, avoidance of reminders/thoughts, inability to recall certain features, distorted beliefs/blaming of self and others, diminished interest, detachment, hypervigilance, sleep problems, and even dissociative symptoms. Take the case of the Giver, who has held these memories for years and still suffers with them, is shown to be debilitated by said memories. Rosemary, after seeing her first painful and traumatic memory changed permanently and no longer laughed. Lastly, Jonas, who tried to make sense of these memories, but ended up panicking because of painful memories yet still, no one understood why. In spite of the fact that there were happy and joyous memories, the painful and traumatic ones still scarred them and made them react as trauma survivors do. As previously stated, trauma survivors react with hypervigilance, anger, sadness, fearfulness, numbness, etc. While these memories may have encouraged them to comprehend certain aspects of life and how to help others, they were damaged them in ways that resulted in them doing things that ultimately made them separated and made them feel detached from the community. In conclusion, the Giver, in certain aspects, shows a strong connection trauma survivors and those with PTSD from panic attacks to diminished ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Hume The Paradox Of Painful Art Summary Why do ordinary, rational, human beings actively and knowingly seek out art that appears to elicit negative emotions, especially as these same people tend to avoid such emotions in other areas of their life? This question formally understood as the paradox of painful art is what Hume effectively attempts to address in his essay 'Of Tragedy'. In this essay I will conclude that Hume's solution to this paradox; that painful emotions elicited by art are converted into pleasurable ones; is indefensible. I will first offer my reading of Hume's solution to the paradox of painful art. I will then argue that Hume fails to give a satisfying account of the process of the conversion he proposes, I will then go onto show that Hume's conversion theory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hume offers a viable solution to this objection by claiming that not only is our pain converted into pleasure by the artistry but it 'swells in delight in the eloquence it raises in us' (Hume, 1757). To explain what I believe Hume means, I ask you to imagine the scientific process where steam is 'converted' into water – condensation. The glass is already half full of water at the beginning of this imagined experiment and the room is full of steam. By the end of the process the glass is now full, as what was formally steam has now been 'converted' into water. There is no steam and the water level has been enhanced by the process of 'conversion'. Similarly, Hume claims, the process of conversion that takes place while watching painful art not only alters the nature of the painful emotion but it eventually enhances the pleasure. According to my reading of Hume this is why we actively and knowingly seek out painful art when more agreeable art is readily available to us – because it offers us profound pleasure. Having given my account of Hume's solution to the paradox of painful art I will now go onto offer objections as to why this solution is indefensible. My first objection to Hume's conversion based solution to the paradox of painful art is that he fails to give a satisfactory account of the process in which negative emotions such as fear, pity and sorrow are converted into pleasure. When and how does this process occur? Despite Hume's numerous examples of pain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Fragments of A Painful Case and Paper Pills Fragments of "A Painful Case" and "Paper Pills" Although James Joyce and Sherwood Anderson situate their subjects in very different milieux (Joyce's in Dublin; Anderson's in Winesburg, Ohio), two of their subjects speak the same language of idiosyncrasy. In Joyce's "A Painful Case," Mr. Duffy keeps on his desk "a little sheaf of papers held together by a brass pin. In these sheets a sentence was inscribed from time to time and, in an ironical moment, the headline of an advertisement for Bile Beans had been pasted on to the first sheet" (Joyce 103). In Anderson's "Paper Pills," Dr. Reefy records his thoughts on "scraps of paper that became hard balls and were thrown away" (Anderson 36). These scribbled bits of subjectivity offer ... Mrs. Sinico becomes a willing listener to the narrative of Duffy's life, which had always "rolled out evenly –– an adventureless tale" (105); he categorizes her as "his confessor." With "careful scorn" he denies to her that he writes down his thoughts, but he does begin to share them with her. The trope of the confessional is an interesting one because it implies a guarded opening of one's nature, where a screen of distance and difference is always interposed between the speaker and listener. In A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Joyce captures the simultaneity of self–disclosure and physical separation in the image of the confessional: "The slide clicked back and [Stephen's] heart bounded in his chest. The face of an old priest was at the grating, averted from him, leaning upon a hand" (143). The confessional shows the division between subject and other while suggesting their potential reconciliation through the subject's confidence and contrition. Mrs. Sinico draws Duffy closer to the moment of reconciliation where he may cease to live "at a little distance from his own body" (104) and from the society that surrounds him. She offers him a medium where he may thrive: "her companionship was like warm soil about an exotic...This union exalted him, wore away the rough edges of his character, emotionalised his mental life" (107). The Conversion Theory Essay "The central problem of the conversion theory ....is that it does not describe the way we typify our experiences of painful art....If the overall experience of an artwork is described as painful, then the conversion theory is simply not applicable to that work." "It would be odd to say that we enjoy horror/tragedy." (Chapelle, 2014, p.92) Smuts also points out that Hume gives no process of the conversion theory; he clearly states that Hume does not give an account of why the conversion theory occurs but Hume does on the other hand give a vague explanation of how it works, although not very descriptive. In the defence of Hume, we could state that: painful art is mysterious in the way that it makes our experience pleasurable. Aristotle also struggled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Smuts, 2009, p.48) Hume denies F that states: "Experiences of painful art are experiences that cause pain, not pleasure." Hume in this case, therefore accepts normative hedonism which is described in the following declaration: "The only thing that people are ever rationally motivated by is the prospect of gaining pleasure or avoiding pain." This is a very painful form of arthritis that affects a number of people. This form of arthritis may develop due to age, but it can also be the result of injury. Fortunately, there are specific treatment options for this form of arthritis. Cervical arthritis generally occurs when the cervical vertebras within the neck deteriorate. When this is accompanied by a deterioration of cartilage, the condition is very painful. The disks within the neck provide support and make the neck flexible. The cartilage acts as a shock absorber so that normal movement is not painful. Most people will experience some level of deterioration as they age, but not everyone develops arthritis. Those who do develop cervical arthritis will usually do so between the ages forty and fifty years old. In most cases, men have a higher risk of developing cervical arthritis than women. On the other hand, women who are postmenopausal also have a high risk factor. The most common cause of this type of arthritis is injury. It is defined as the infliction of punishment on the body. Graeme Newman defends the idea that corporal punishment is an effective means of discipline. He strictly argues that this form of punishment is "the most humane punishment we have". In his book Just and Painful: A Case for the Corporal Punishment of Criminals, Newman has two arguments that support his position: that the punishment must be painful and that it must cast back the nature of the crime itself. Prison fails at conveying the message of being wrong and also Newman argues it's hard to control. Pain is the essential key because everyone can feel pan and has an idea of what it entails. Prison doesn't necessarily explain what should be done but with physical discipline (corporal punishment) it gives a chance of correction and apply it to his future. • 33. The Ross Cheit Case There are two main reasons why the Ross Cheit case and case study by Bull (1999) are considered to important to supporting the existence of repression. Both cases demonstrate how victims of childhood abuse are able to suppress traumatic memories of their abuse for long periods of time from conscious awareness. In the Ross Cheit case, he states that "Two years ago, the topic of sexual abuse was something that [he] certainly knew nothing about" (Freyd, 1996, p. 6). More importantly, when he finally reads newspaper headlines about allegations of sexual abuse, his initial reaction to the topic of sexual abuse was "...And certainly, why are they doing it now? This is thirty years ago. Why are they doing this?" (Freyd, 1996, p. 6). Ross Cheit's naivete towards the concept of sexual abuse could be argued to be a result of a mechanism referred to as "repression." • 43. Theme Of A Painful Case By Ame Joyce ame Joyce in his short story "A Painful Case" depicts Mr. Duffy as a narcissistic and selfish man who is so obsessed with himself that he is incapable of any deep interaction or bonding with others. The story begins with the description that mr. Duffy "lived in Chapelizod because he wished to live as far as possible from the city of which he was a citizen" (103). This self imposed isolation shows a repulsion to his fellow citizens and a disinterest of interaction with them. He seems to be especially disapproving of people who are unlike himself as he is described as having "neither companions nor friends, church nor creed" (105) and how he "abhorred anything which betokened physical or mental disorder" (104). This is the first glimpse into a inherited narcissism so powerful that it has directed his actions to the point that he isolates himself to avoid any interactions with people he deems unworthy to experience. The isolation also further enforces his self obsession because his life consists solely of being by himself and analyzing himself. Joyce notes that during the day he always "lived at a little distance from his body, regarding his own acts with doubtful side–glances" (). He got to the point of self obsession where he would narrate his own day: Joyce described it as a "habit which led him to compose in his mind from time to time a short sentence about himself containing a subject in the third person and a predicate in the past tense" (). Judgement and narcissism are such a large part of Mr. Duffys life that Joyce twice describes the symptoms in his analysis of him, which he believes were only increased by his isolation. Mrs. Sinico acts as a foil to Mr. Duffy's behavior. While he was isolated by choice, she was left on her own after her husband "had dismissed [her] so sincerely from his gallery of pleasures that he did not suspect that anyone else would take an interest in her" (). However she is used to highlight his selfishness, because despite their similar circumstances, there is a large contrast in their attitudes. For example, when they meet at the Rotunda, Mrs. Sinico remarks "what a pity there is such a poor house tonight! It's so had to have to sing to empty benches" (105). This expression ... Upon further inspection, it becomes evident that this character is easily defined by his tendency towards misanthropy. Misanthropy, as defined by the Merriam–Webster dictionary, is the "hatred or distrust of humankind". This trait in Mr. Duffy is demonstrated clearly in a passage early on in the story: "His cheekbones also gave his face a harsh character; but there was no harshness in the eyes which, looking at the world from under their tawny eyebrows, gave the impression of a man ever alert to greet a redeeming instinct in others but often disappointed (142)." The pupil reasserted itself quickly, this half–disclosed nature fell again under the reign of prudence, and her astrakan jacket, moulding a bosom of a certain fullness, struck the note of defiance more definitely (143). She points out the numerous empty seats around them in the concert hall, but makes no fuss over it whatsoever. He also detects her intelligence and sensibility, both of which are important facets of Mrs. Sinico's personality. To him, the most important of the traits he sees is her vulnerability. This is revealed briefly as her pupils momentarily "swoon" into the irises, indicating that she is open to his influence in ways she has not verbally stated. This is significant to Mr. Duffy because he knows that if she is vulnerable toward him, he can be dominant over her. The suggested attraction she has leads him to believe later on that "he would ascend to an angelical stature" in her eyes. He believes that this vulnerability is in fact a weakness in her character, and that she would hold him in a much higher esteem than anyone else in her life. Eventually, after their companionship has developed for some time, Mr. Duffy abruptly decides to sever the connection completely. By this doctrine pleasure is the only thing desirable as an end and pain is the only thing undesirable as an end. Everything else is good or evil as it tends to promote pleasure or pain*. I will argue that pain should be considered as a means as well as an end and show that this is consistent with John Stuart Mill's version of Utilitarianism. Conjoining the consideration of pain as a means and the notion of association of ideas, I will give what I hope is a unique explanation as to why higher pleasures are so often considered superior to lower pleasures. Finally I will end with a short exposition that may help to explain Mill's mental crisis of 1826 by using the ideas advanced in this paper. Pain and pleasure are experienced partially relative to each other. A given experience will be inherently pleasurable or painful, but previous experiences influence the experience of pleasure or pain. Relevant for this essay, painful experiences tend to increase the pleasure of subsequent experiences. I will illustrate this with an example. The Erotic in Joyce's A Painful Case The Erotic in Joyce's A Painful Case The characters whom inhabit Joyce's world in "Dubliners," often have, as Harvard Literature Professor Fischer stated in lecture, a "limited way" of thinking about and understanding themselves and the world around them. Such "determinism," however, operates not on a broad cultural scale, but works in smaller, more local, more interior and more idiosyncratic ways. That is, the forces which govern Joyce's characters are not necessarily cultural or socioeconomic in nature, but rather, as Prof. Fischer stated, are "tiny," and work on a more intimate level. In any case, as a result of such "forces", these stories often tend to be about something, as Prof. Fischer said, that doesn't ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first instance of this occurs when Joyce writes, "The dark discreet room, their isolation, the music that still vibrated in their ears united them" (111). As with the description of "mental eroticism," (i.e. "thoughts entangling"), Joyce couches "auditory eroticisim" in physically erotic terms as well. It is through sound, in this case "music," music which we are told "vibrates," that the two are brought together, "united." The setting, "a dark discreet room", the way in which the music is described, "vibrating" and the use of the phrase "united," all suggest a kind of romantic, physically erotic union. Similarly, Joyce later describes how Duffy "seemed to feel her voice touch his ear..." (118). By describing a voice as "touching" an "ear," Joyce again suggests a physical act of eroticism. Unlike, however, the "touching of their hands," which Joyce says Duffy imagines as well, the idea of a "voice touching an ear" suggests not only external "touching", but because a voice enters one's body and soul, also connotes images of penetration. A voice, unlike hands, penetrates; committing the most erotic act of all. It is not, however, until the end of the story that we are able to understand not only how "sound" and "voice" functions in a "auditory erotic" fashion, but how such eroticism is responsible for Duffy's, albeit impermanent, self–transcendence. In a passage which Professor Fischer would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Cold Injury Research Paper Non Freezing Cold Injury also known as trench foot, is a condition caused by prolonged exposure to cold, wet, and unsanitary conditions. It causes the foot to become nub, due to a lose of blood flow to the feet. Trench Foot originates back to 1812 with Napoleon's Army, however Trench Foot is most commonly associate with World War I Trench Foot is caused by prolonged exposure to cold, wet unsanitary conditions. Trench Foot can develop with less than a day in these conditions. The blood flow lessens in an attempt to keep the body temperature regulated. This reduces the amount of nutrients and oxygen to the feet, resulting in nerve and tissue damage. It is most commonly seen in builders Hiker, security guards, campers. Treatment of Trench Foot includes thoroughly cleaning and drying the feet, then gently re–warming the feet to improve circulation, after a potassium permanganate foot bath is used to draw fluid out of the affected area. In severe cases, if the first three steps do not work, amputation is needed to stop the spread of gangrene to the rest of the body. Trench Foot takes approximately three to six months to heal. • 61. Are Physician-Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia Ethical? Essay Is Euthanasia Ethical? Euthanasia is one of the most acute and uncomfortable contemporary problems in medical ethics. Is Euthanasia Ethical? The case for euthanasia rests on one main fundamental moral principle: mercy. It is not a new issue; euthanasia has been discussed–and practised–in both Eastern and Western cultures from the earliest historical times to the present. But because of medicine's new technological capacities to extend life, the problem is much more pressing than it has in the past, and both the discussion and practice of euthanasia are more widespread. Euthanasia is a way of granting mercy–both by direct killing and by letting the person ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Weather a painful test or therapy will actually contribute to some overriding benefits for him or her, they should not be done. In many such cases, the patient will die whether or not the treatments are performed. In some cases, however, the principle of mercy may also demand withholding treatment that could extend the patient's life if the treatment is itself painful or discomforting and there is very little or no possibility that it will provide life that is pain–free or offers the possibility of other important goods. • 64. Euthanasi Active And Passive Euthanasia Euthanasia, also known as voluntary or assisted suicide, is used for terminally ill patients to end their lives instead of undergoing painful treatments and torment of waiting for death. There are, however, two different ways in which A can bring about B's death. In this essay I will present the distinction between active and passive euthanasia as explained by James Rachels in his article called "Active and Passive Euthanasia". I will also debate whether euthanasia is justified or not by presenting arguments both pro and against euthanasia including pain and financial burden as justifications for euthanasia and abuse of rights as against euthanasia. The major distinction described by Rachels would be, simply put, killing and letting die. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rachels argues "To begin with a familiar type of situation, a patient who is dying of incurable cancer of the throat is in terrible pain... This fact provides strong reason for thinking that... active euthanasia is actually preferable to passive euthanasia, rather than the reverse." (Rachels, 78) Rachels argument is that there is no moral difference between actively killing a patient and passively allowing the patient to die. For example, killing Joan benefits Bill. Whether Bill kills him directly or lets him die doesn't affect the morality of the situation. Thus, both the situations would be considered equally immoral. The conclusion following the example above would be that there is no difference between killing (active euthanasia) and letting die (passive euthanasia). According to Rachels, accepting that there is a distinction between active and passive euthanasia would result in decisions about life and death being made on irrelevant grounds. For example, autistic infants sometimes have correctable secondary problems, such as having an intestinal obstruction; but decisions are made to forego corrective surgery (and thus let the infant die) simply because the parents do not want the burden of having an autistic child. In Rachels opinion, passive euthanasia may generally be preferable to active euthanasia which doesn't seem right. Being allowed to die can be an incredibly painful process. A lethal injection, however, is less painful. Assuming a terminally ill ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. Essay The Death of Mrs. Sinico in "a Painful Case" Mrs. Sinico's character is not the main character in the story. We read the story mostly from the point of view, thoughts and inspirations of Mr. Duffy, thus he is the main source through which we can observe her character, along side with other sources, such as her family and after her death, from a newspaper article and witnesses: " The deceased had been in the habit of crossing the lines late at night from platform to platform...", "Captain Sinico, of Leoville, Sydney Parade, husband of the deceased, also gave evidence... They had been married for twenty–two years and had lived happily until about two years ago when his wife began to be rather intemperate in her habits"; "Miss Mary Sinico said that of late her mother had been in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From his description of her face, we get a glimpse of their entire relationship. "Her face, which must have been handsome, had remained intelligent" (120). Her appearance is not as important to him as her intellect – the base of their later relationship. He also notices the fact that "she seemed so little awkward" (120). He notices in her eyes "a defiant note" but also "a temperament of great sensibility" (120). The way her eyes are described, as if a battle is happening there, suggests maybe on an uneven person, maybe a clue to what will come later in her death. We know that she is married and has a daughter. We learn that she is alone most of the time "As the husband was often away and the daughter out giving music lessons..." (121), and that the relationship between her and her husband is not close: "Captain Sinico encouraged his visits... He had dismissed his wife so sincerely" (121). From his description of their relationship in the newspaper article "had lived happily", we understand how oblivious he was to the fact that she wasn't happy. Mr. Duffy and Mrs. Sinico's relationship begins from an accidental meeting in the theater. Joyce describes their relationship on two levels. Mrs. Sinico is the one who first addresses him, and Mr. Duffy "took [her] remark as an invitation to talk" (120), and by their second meeting he "seized the moments when her daughter's attention was diverted to ... • 68. Drug Patterns In Medical Patients The length of time it takes for the inmate to reach the point of death can be anywhere from thirty minutes to a few hours. It can be difficult to find a vein to inject the drugs into, it can be a longer process than needed just to find a vein in someone's arm. Inmates with drug habits can be especially difficult to find a vein that is useable. There has been several cases where it took up to an hour just to find a vein. This is unacceptable because there was not a proper medical doctor doing this, so it took longer than it should have. There has also been incidents where it took two attempts to do the execution. This, again, is from not having a proper medical doctor. Most people believe that prisoners should die a slow and painful death. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. Master Argument On Death Death is an inevitable event that every human being will experience some time in his or her life. It is something that most people try to avoid talking about, and avoiding in general. Some people do not want to not die because of fear from different things, such as emotional distress on family members, suffering, and in some cases, the fear of the Afterlife. However, as the Epicureans point out, fearing death is not rational, since it is not bad for us. In this paper, I will be discussing how Hedonism is not bad for an individual. I will be arguing against those who reject premise B2 from the Master Argument on Death. My position is that death is not rational to fear. This structure of the paper is that I will quickly introduce the Master Argument, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For premise B2, it states that there is no more suffering, just peace with oneself. Some might say that is not true, because they might believe that in the Afterlife there will be painful punishments for those who committed sins. In order for those who reject B2, they have to understand Epicurus's definition of death. "Epicurus claims that death is not the process of dying. Dying is something leading to death, but not death itself. Also, he did not mean the moment of death either." (Epicurus' Death Argument). The moment of death is what most religious people believe is the Afterlife, and being dead is leading up to the moment of the Afterlife when we may or may not experience that. Once we have understood that, then we can argue against those who reject B2, by saying that the only bad things for you are painful sensations. Quoted by Epicurus, "death is nothing to us; for that which is dissolved is with out sensation; and which lacks sensation is nothing to us" (128). When we are dead, we do not feel anything at all. It is just a state of non–existence, with complete and total serenity. It is a moment in time when you feel nothing. After that moment has passed, is when the next phase in the Afterlife begins. Therefore, death is not bad for you because it is a moment of non– existence and is painless, and thus you should not fear ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. Theme Of Beauty In The Wanderer Throughout life, one will endure hardship numerous times. It is unavoidable and inevitable; however, positives can always be taken from the hardship. Not only can life lessons be ingrained in the mind, but, almost always, beauty can be created from hardship. This is most definitely the case in three elegies from The Exeter Book, titled "The Seafarer," "The Wife's Lament," and "The Wanderer," which all share a theme of exile, even though it appears in different ways. In "The Seafarer," it appears through the wretchedness of the narrator, in "The Wife's Lament," it appears through the anger of the narrator, and, lastly, in "The Wanderer," it appears through loneliness and the melancholy attitude of the narrator. Theme is not the only thing that the elegies share, through the utilization of imagery, creating powerful feelings, or personification, all three elegies create beauty out of a painful experience. Even though a theme of exile appears differently in all three elegies, through utilization of these writing enhancements, each creates beauty out of a painful experience. The first way all three elegies create beauty out of a painful experience is through the use of imagery. In "The Seafarer" when the narrator speaks of his exile and the pain it gives him, the aesthetic imagery creates beauty and helps the reader picture and feel what the narrator is experiencing. The elegy states, "How wretched I was, drifting through winter/On an ice–cold sea, whirled in sorrow,/Alone in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 74. James Joyce 's A Painful Case What does the story signify? James Joyce 's short story, A Painful Case, signifies the dramatic isolation inflicted on man by his own human nature, which leads to a life best described as an "an adventure–less tale". How does it signify this? A Painful Case signifies the woes of self–inflicted isolation through the characterization of the main character, Mr. Duffy. The short story opens by conversing Mr. Duffy 's choice to "live as far as possible from the city of which he was a citizen... he found the other suburbs... mean, modern and pretentious". This can be interpreted that he chooses to live far away from his true self. For the sake of isolation he wishes to separate pieces of himself in terms of what he liked and what he didn 't, further opening himself up to the utmost scrutiny on his own part. It can be suggested that by having Mr. Duffy maintain such an "autobiographical habit" that he would "compose in his mind a short sentence about himself", that he can ultimately recognize particular attributes of his character which distressed himself into isolation. Mr. Duffy, perceived in vivid physical description, is illustrated by words such as "harsh" and "unamiable"; by following the notion that physical attributes can be directly evident of internal characteristics, it can be argued that Mr. Duffy is rugged and closed off from the outside world. His scrutiny is furthered in how his eyes relay a sense of him being "alert to greet a redeeming instinct in others but often ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
