3. GATE
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian
Institutes of Technology (IITs at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur,
Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) jointly administer the conduct of GATE.
The operations related to GATE in each of the 8 zones are managed by a
Zonal GATE Office at IISc. or IITs. The Organizing Institute (OI) is
responsible for the end-to-end process and coordination amongst the
administering Institutes.
A valid GATE score is essential for obtaining financial
assistance during Master’s programs and direct Doctoral programs in
Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture, and Doctoral programs in relevant
branches of Science in Institutes supported by the MHRD or other
Government agencies.
Several public sector undertakings (PSUs) have, in the past,
used GATE scores for screening for providing a salaried employment. A
select few such organizations are: Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bharat
Heavy Electricals Limited, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, National
Thermal Power Corporation, Power Grid India, etc.
Benefits of Taking GATE:
A good GATE score is helpful for getting admission in to IITs, IISC,
IIITs, NITs and many other renowned institutions.
GATE qualification is also a minimum requirement to apply for
various fellowships awarded by many Government organizations.
GATE qualified candidates are also eligible for the award of Junior
Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories and CSIR sponsored
projects.
Focused GATE Preparation also helps in other prestigious PSU
recruitment examinations like CIL, AP Genco, AP Transco, NTPC,
BSNL etc
Many PSUs like HAL, IOCL, PGCIL, BARC etc consider GATE
score
4. Advantages of Gate
1. Recruiting the Best Talent
2. Advantage of a Single Exam
3. Credibility of an Online Exam
4. Dual Advantage for Students
5. Job Security, Good Package and other Benefits
Purpose
Graduate Aptitude Test (GATE) is an all-India examination
administered and conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and
seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordinating
Board - GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resource
Development (MHRD), Government of India.
Admission to postgraduate programmes with MHRD and some
other government scholarship/assistantship at engineering colleges/institutes
in the country are open to those who qualify through GATE. GATE qualified
candidates with Bachelor's degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/
Pharmacy or Master's degree in any branch of Science / Mathematics
/Statistics/Computer Applications are eligible for Master/Doctoral
programmes in Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Phar... as well as for
Doctoral programmes in relevant branches of Science. To avail the
scholarship, the candidate must secure admission to such a postgraduate
programme, as per the prevailing procedure of the admitting institution.
GATE qualification, however, is not required for candidates with Master's
degree in Engineering / Technology/ Architecture/ Pharmacy, who may be
seeking scholarship/ assistantship for relevant doctoral programmes.
Some institutions specify GATE as the mandatory qualification
even for admission of self-financing students to postgraduate programmes.
GATE qualified candidates are also eligible for the award of Junior Research
Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories and CSIR sponsored projects. Some
government organizations prescribe GATE qualification as a requirement for
applying to the post of a Scientist / Engineer.
5. GRE
The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a standardised test
that is an admissions requirement for most graduate schools in the United
States. Created and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS) in
1949, the exam aims to measure verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning,
analytical writing, and critical thinking skills that have been acquired over a
long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study. The
GRE General Test is offered as a computer-based exam administered at
Prometric testing centers.
In the graduate school admissions process, the level of
emphasis that is placed upon GRE scores varies widely between schools and
between departments within schools. The importance of a GRE score can
range from being a mere admission formality to an important selection
factor.
The GRE was significantly overhauled in August 2011,
resulting in an exam that is not adaptive on a question-by-question basis, but
rather by section, so that the performance on the first verbal and math
sections determine the difficulty of the second sections presented. Overall,
the test retained the sections and many of the question types from its
predecessor, but the scoring scale was changed to a 130 to 170 scale (from a
200 to 800 scale). A minimum score of 260/340 is awarded on attempting
the exam.
Structure
The structure of the computer-based GRE revised General Test
consists of six sections. The first section is always the analytical writing
section involving separately timed issue and argument tasks. The next five
sections consist of two verbal reasoning sections, two quantitative reasoning
sections, and either an experimental or research section. These five sections
may occur in any order. The experimental section does not count towards the
final score but is not distinguished from the scored sections. Unlike the
computer adaptive test prior to August 2011, the GRE revised General Test
is a multistage test, where the examinee's performance on earlier sections
determines the difficulty of subsequent sections. This format allows the
6. examinee to freely move back and forth between questions within each
section, and the testing software allows the user to "mark" questions within
each section for later review if time remains. The entire testing procedure
lasts about 3 hours 45 minutes.[11][12] One-minute breaks are offered after
each section and a 10-minute break after the third section.
The paper-based GRE General Test consists of six sections and
is only available in areas where computer-based testing is unavailable. The
analytical writing is split up into two sections, one section for each issue and
argument task. The next four sections consist of two verbal and two
quantitative sections in varying order. There is no experimental section on
the paper-based test.
Purpose
The GRE General Exam measures (1) verbal, (2) Quantitative, and (3)
Analytical Reasoning skills relevant to graduate study. Eligibility for
admission to a Graduate Program is usually based upon your GRE General
Score and your college GPA.
Features
The GRE is conducted solely for the purpose of scanning students for
admission in a graduation course .They come from different socio-economic
backgrounds and hence have different levels of knowledge and
understanding. The test examines them for a standard level of knowledge
which they are supposed to have at the college level. College education is
tougher than school education and colleges cannot afford to take in students
who are not competent enough to complete it. This test, in fact, serves a dual
purpose. Firstly, it helps colleges scan candidates and select only the capable
ones. The colleges can shun those who do not meet their requirements and
choose from others who have scored well in the test. Secondly, it helps
students by giving them an opportunity to show their knowledge which is
measured on a common scale and all deserving students get a fair chance of
admission to a college of their choice. The test is fair and unbiased to any
particular class of students. It is an excellent opportunity for students to
compete for admission.
7. NSTSE
NSTSE Stands for National Level Science Talent Search
Examination. It is a scientifically designed, skill-based assessment developed
in India for Indian schools, after a detailed study of the syllabi of different
central and state boards. Rather than testing rote learning, it focuses on
measuring how well SKILLS and CONCEPTS underlying the school
syllabus have been learnt by the student. The test provides information on
the strengths and weaknesses of individual students and also entire classes.
Advantage
Provides feedback on real learning & Relevant - actually tests what is
being taught
Allows student to know where she stands -
Pinpoints areas of strengths and weaknesses
Affordable, accessible to all students( through schools or individually)
Features
Skill-based
Provides benchmark for students all over India
Provides detailed analysis and feedback
Low cost
NSTSE is a diagnostic test which actually helps students improve. Unlike
regular tests which try only to find out how much a child knows (or has
memorized), NSTSE measures how well a student has understood concepts
and gives detailed feedback on the same, to help them improve. Thus
NSTSE helps each student know whether he/she has actually understood a
concept early on so that immediate action can be taken. Often students have
conceptual gaps which increase as they progress and when they reach the
higher classes, they develop a "phobia" for the subject. School tests -
including board exams - tend to be superficial, testing what children have
memorised. But the important skills like the ability to think independently
and reason logically - critical in today's world - are often not emphasised in
school tests. The focus on fundamentals is so important that when the child
finishes studies he/she will have to face the competitive world armed with
8. these fundamentals. Even while opting for higher studies, the student has to
go through a complete scan of what he/she knows and how much. Exams
like IIT-JEE, AIEEE, AFMC, AIIMS, GRE, GMAT, CAT etc., are so
designed to test the fundamental strength of student. Hence the need of the
hour is building the fundamentals base as strong as possible. This exactly is
the philosophy behind the Unified Council's NSTSE.
NSTSE is unlike other tests in many different ways. It
• has interesting questions that require thinking, not simply recall.
• provides detailed skill-wise feedback highlighting strengths and
weaknesses
• provides a benchmark of the student's performance with peers all over
the country.
Thus, NSTSE focuses on IMPROVEMENT rather than
comparison or grading. It also reduces the stress of exams by checking
UNDERSTANDING rather than FACTS National Level Science Talent
Search Examination (NSTSE ) is a scientifically designed skill based
assessment test, for students of classes II to XII, (CBSE / ICSE /all State
Board Syllabi). It is a National Maths and Science Olympiad test held for
about 4,20,000 students: 14 countries. It is the largest in the continent
National Level Science Talent Search Examination-2014. NSTSE is a
scientifically designed, skill-based assessment developed in India for Indian
schools, after a detailed study of the syllabi of different central and state
boards Unified Council is India's leading scientific assessment organisation.
NSTSE has been providing a strong foundation to the younger generation
and helping them to succeed. All competitive exams like IIT-JEE, AIEEE,
AIIMS, AFMC, CAT, SAT, GRE and GMAT etc.. are designed to test one's
fundamental strength. Around 4,20,000 students had participated in NSTSE-
2013, this shows the popularity of this exam.
