Hot Fuzz Mise-En-Scene Analysis
1. Hot Fuzz – Mise-En-Scene
Film Opening Evaluation
The first shotis an establishing shot of a man walking down the hall way of a
building which is assumed to be a police building. The next camera shotis a
close up of the main actors face therefore almost immediately we can
establish who the main actor is (Simon Pegg). We can see from the close up
shothis emotion which is seen to be angry.
The editing is fastpaced and is almost sped up for the drama and to show that
this character is busy and his life is compact. There is a montage of clips to
show the character’s life. By having a montage, it allows the audience to stay
engaged and concentrated on the film as they it is fastand ‘extreme’, because
it is so intense it shows emphasis on how hard he has worker for his job and
how important his role is and how much he has been through to get his job.
The first sounds wehear are diegetic sounds. Wecan hear emergency services
sirens going off and are very loud. We therefore can tell that this film is going
to be drama based and is going to be set around a police officer. After this we
hear a voice over of the main actor who is telling his life story and the back
story to his life. This gives the audience a bit of background to whatthis
character is like and his persona. There are somenon-diegetic sounds as well
because there is also a soundtrack behind the actor’s voice which is fastand
loud as well. The diegetic sounds show things like the car stopping and
screeching to add effect. These sounds allow the audience to feel like they
connect with the character and feel what he is feeling.
Within the scene many props are used. Such as when he is seen shooting a gun
it shows how dangerous his life is and how intense his job which allows the
audience to feel sorry for him and feel empathy for the character. In every clip,
you can see who the actor is and is always seen at the frontof the camera
which tells the audience that he is key within the film and is mostimportant. It
is set in modern day times which is shown by the police uniforms and
therefore connects with the audience. The character’s costumealso allows the
audience to feel like he is respected and a valued person due to him being In
the police force.
