2. What is Pace Work?
Based on the Accelerated Christian Education
Student-centered, Mastery-based learning
1. Level- acknowledges that all are different. The student learns
at his/her own pace
2. Goals- reflects good judgment. Set attainable goals and be
responsible for these goals. Min of 1 test/week/subject
3. Controlled -the drive for learning must be intrinsic while
guided by the supervisor as the student assimilates, uses and
experiences the material
4. Measurable- material is designed to facilitate learning. The
Pace Test is the measurement of what the student has learned.
• Self-checking the pace, self-test
• Pace test=fail/pass (80% passing rate Level 3 up; 90% 2 down)
5. Motivated- learning must be rewarded. Teacher must be
effective enough so that he/she becomes unnecessary for the
students’ learning process.
3. Vision:
We envision to produce:
1. Nationalistic and globally competitive students
2. Responsible and compassionate members of
society.
Mission:
We will attain this through:
1. The development of individualized, student-
centered, mastery-based quality curriculum
materials; enabling Philippine Educators to
provide accessible, affordable, academically
excellent, nationalistic, and transformational
education for all.
4. Definition of Terms
• Pace- a bite-sized booklet of curriculum. It is a
set of learning materials, usually 30-40 pages
long, which is a student’s textbook/workbook
– Each level has to finish xxx number of paces. Ex:
Level 1= 14, Level 2=14, Level 3=18
• Pace Test- used to evaluate how well the
student mastered the material in a Pace (min
80%; 90% on Pace for Preschool). Pace test
may be taken on paper or computer.
5. • Goal- a student will set goals every day.
– Ex: 5 pages of ArPan, 3 pages of Word Building, 5
pages of Math
– Goals should be attainable. Finished goals have
corresponding rewards/merits
• Learning Center- the term used to call the
classroom
– Each student has a cubicle where he/she studies.
This is called the “student office”
– Order should be maintained in the learning center
using flaglets (red=cr break, scoring; yellow=needs
help, asking permission)
6. How was this practiced before?
1. Bible is the sole authority.
– Daily Bible reading is a part of the curriculum
– Praying before setting the goals
– A character trait with a memory verse for each Pace
2. Everything (examples, assignments, etc.) is focused on
Christianity and the Bible
– Subject-verb agreement:
• God is holy.
• we are a loving family of God, etc.
– Science: Creationism
• God created the world. On the first day He separated light from the darkness
3. Use of the Christian Flag alongside the Philippine Flag
4. Materials are quite expensive, only for private schools
7. How will it be practiced now?
1. Generic
2. No mention of a certain religion- no biased doctrines, no
adherence to a certain faith, will openly discuss all kinds of
religions
3. Same principle of learning as A.C.E.
– Teacher as facilitator
– Setting of goals
– Learning at own pace, student-office
– Discipline (flaglets, learning center rules, character trait focus)
4. Philippine-based- it will be redesigned to fit the
demographics, culture, and environment of our country;
making a new set of materials for all the subject areas, new
computer software, and new guidelines
8. Identity Collaborators
• Pragmatism
– Student-centered, creation of new
values, principles of utility, interest,
experience, integration
• Dr. Donald Howard (School of
Tomorrow/ Accelerated Christian
Education , Inc)
9. Challenges Ahead:
1. Curriculum developers who will design a Philippine-
based curriculum/Pace Work
2. Construction of Learning Centers, complete with
student-offices
3. Training of teachers
