3. General info on what the work involves
NSW SafeWork dogging (DG) licence.
Dogging work involving:
• The application of slinging techniques, including the selection and inspection of
lifting gear, to safely sling a load, or
• The directing of a plant operator.
NSW SafeWork basic rigger (RB) licence.
Dogging and rigging work involving:
• Movement of plant and equipment
• Steel erection
• Hoists (including mast climbing hoists)
• Placement of pre-cast concrete
• Safety nets and static lines
• Perimeter safety screens and shutters
• Cantilevered crane-loading platforms
Types of Work requiring a Licence
4. NSW SafeWork intermediate rigger (RI) licence.
All basic rigging work including rigging work involving:
• Cranes, conveyors, dredges and excavators.
• Tilt slabs
• Hoists with jibs and self-climbing hoists
• Demolition
• Dual lifts -
Note: The use of a crane does not mandate the licence. The licence is based on the activity
being performed.
NSW SafeWork advanced rigger (RA) licence.
All intermediate rigging work including rigging work involving:
• Gin poles and shear legs
• Flying foxes and cableways
• Guyed derricks and structures
• Suspended and fabricated hung scaffolds

5. Care & Use
Care during use/precautions:
• Examine before use,
• do not overload or damage,
• protect from sharp edges,
• void exposure to damaging conditions
(chemicals, heat, water, sunlight etc).
Limitations for use:
• WLL Working Load Limit,
• Environmental and temperature constraints,
• Radius of bends (Wire slings).
9. Storage of Equipment
(All have common care and characteristics)
• Chain, Wire and Flat Synthetic
Webbing Slings should be stored
on properly designed racks “not on
the floor”
• Dry and well ventilated
• Away from heat and chemicals
• Out of direct sunlight and
ultraviolet light for Flat Synthetic
Webbing Slings
10. Discard Criteria
• WLL tag missing
• Ineffective safety catches
• Wear, cuts, nicks, cracks,
corrosion, heat damage,
distortion
• Signs of overloading eg visible
opening or twists in hooks
• Excessive wear on load pins
