3. PRIMARY MEMORY
- are of two types: RAM (Random
Access Memory) and ROM (Read- Only
Memory).
RAM- is also the computer’s temporary
storage area.
TWO TYPES OF MEMORY
4. ROM- is a non-erasable memory of the
computer and is a part of the primary
memory.
- These ROM chips are very useful in
computers because these are where the
operating systems are written
permanently.s
5. SECONDARY MEMORY
- is used to store data and files for
longer period of time.
Commonly used secondary memory
devices are Magnetic tapes, Hard disk
drives, floppy disks, and CD-ROMS.
6. Magnetic tapes – are slow when it comes
to reading and writing data. However,
they can hold large amounts of data and
are cheaper.
7. Hard Disk– are permanently installed
inside a hard disk drive. They have larger
storage capacities and can access data
faster than floppy disks.
8. Floppy Disk– it is made of plastic or
Mylar circular sheet and coated with
magnetic materials enclosed in a hard
plastic shell. Most floppy disks are 3.5
inches in size.
9. CD-ROM– it is also known as Compact Disc
Read- Only memory and is commonly used
for multimedia application. Each CD can
hold over 650MB of data or equal to
storage capacity of 470 diskettes.
