3. Data Communication
CHARACTERISTICS:
Delivery: The system must
deliver data to the correct
destination.
Accuracy: The system must
deliver data accurately (Error
Free).
Timeliness: The system must
deliver data in a timely
manner.
Data communication is the
exchange of data between two
devices using some form of wired or
wireless transmission medium. It
includes the transfer of data, the
method of transfer, and the
preservation of the data during the
transfer process. To initiate data
communication, the communicating
devices should be a part of an
existing communication system.

5. Components of Data Communication
Message
The message refers to the data
or information that is being
transmitted from the sender to
the receiver. It may consist of
text, images, audio, video,
graphics or pictures, etc.
Sender
The sender is a device that
creates a message and sends
it. The sender is also called a
source or transmitter or node.
Receiver
The receiver is a device that
receives a message sent by the
sender. Furthermore, the
receiver must have the ability to
accept the message.
5
Medium
It is the channel or physical path
through which the message is
carried from the sender to the
receiver. The transmission
medium can be wired or
wireless.
Protocol
The protocol is a set of rules for
exchanging information among
computers.
