A woman goes on a date with her boyfriend that is unexpectedly cut short when he breaks up with her at the restaurant. Upset, she leaves and goes to a park to process her feelings. There, she runs into a man she had smiled at earlier, who had also been at the restaurant. They feed birds together in the park and feel an instant connection, their hands touching as they both hold the bread.
1. Synopsis
She had made plans to go out with her boyfriend that day and she had specifically
checked the weather the day before and it had said no rain. Yet, she came out of her
house and was five minutes away from the restaurant where she was supposed to
be meeting her boyfriend there for a romantic lunch and it had started raining. She
had even worn a pale off-white, cream dress for the occasion. She had checked the
temperature outside and because it was going to be a little chilly she had worn her
black leather jacket. It was her faviroute jacket and she felt happy to wear it off with
her black boots. She was in a good mood, a very good mood, smiling to herself whilst
people on the road looked weirdly at her but she did not seem to care the slightest.
She even had a little bounce to every step she took, that is actually how happy she
was. She had accidentally smiled at a boy who was walking past her and had looked
confused but then smiled back. Oops, but he was cute so she didn’t mind, she
thought. Until, of course it started to drizzle. She hurriedly scurried towards the
restaurant wanting to get in there before her long black hair became wavy from all
the rain. As the restaurant came in sight, she walked towards it, fixed her outfit and
hair in a quick motion on the reflection of the door then opened it and walked
inside.
She looked round, she could see a man sitting by himself eating his lunch, another
couple who seemed hopelessly in love staring into each other’s eyes even though
their food has probably gone cold now. She looked round again and found her
boyfriend sitting at the far back in the corner, drinking water. He had not seen her
yet; she smiled and walked towards him. As she came near, he looked up and smiled
at her. He was wearing a red shirt, her faviroutecolour. It was a nervous smile that
was on his face, she could tell, probably because he was still shy from seeing her. She
smiled back and sat down. There a small silence as she looked at him expectantly but
he was looking down. She looked round, wondering what could possibly be wrong
with him, something seemed different and he was acting sheepish as if he had
something to say but did not want to. Why on earth did he look so guilty? She
thought to herself. She brushed the thought from her mind and leaned forward and
said, “Hey.” He looked up and replied, “Hi.” Something was wrong, she could tell, it
was written all over his face. He does not usually act like this; she did not seem to
understand why he looked like he was holding back. Was he hiding something? She
knew he was, he had not made any direct eye contact with her from the moment
she walked in, why on earth would he be avoiding looking at her properly if he was
not hiding something? He was usually much more confident than this yet his voice
seemed quieter than usual when he greeted her. He would have gotten up to plant a
kiss on her cheeks like he always did but this time he didn’t. She decided she was
probably being over-paranoid over nothing, there probably was another thing
bothering him and she decided to find out what. She slowly placed her hands on top
of his and asked, “Is there something wrong?” He looked even more nervous by the
fact that she had placed her hands on top of his. He also seemed squeamish in his
seat, as if he was dying to get out of there. He looked up and made direct eye
contact with her for the first time that day. After a few seconds, he looked away
again. He sighed then gulped then looked back at her. His face looked very serious
this time. His odd behaviour started to really worry her and you could see the look of
concern on her face. “We need to break up.” She froze.
2. He had looked away again but her glare was still on him. After a few seconds, he
looked at her again and was just about to say something when she removed her
hands from his sharply and scraped back the chair every so loudly and stood up. She
threw the napkin on the table in anger, she was furious; she did not even want to
hear what he had to say. She leaned forward, “Save your excuses, I don’t want to
know!” She hissed at him. He was stunned by her outrage and had gotten up too. His
face looked torn as he tried to stop her from going but it was too late. She had
turned around ready to storm out the door. Then she stopped abruptly and saw a
boy sitting on the other side of the restaurant, he looked so familiar. She tried to
remember his face. The boy seemed mortified as he had just witnessed everything,
his face was behind the menu, he had been clearly spying. She then came to the
realisation that he was the same guy that was on the streets earlier on before she
came to the restaurant, she had accidentally smiled at him. Oh no, hope he had not
taken that smile as something more. She did not have time to think as to why he was
spying on her behind a menu or even what he was doing here when he had been
going the opposite direction when she was on her way here, as she was still furious
with her boyfriend who was behind her, getting her to stop leaving. She thought, oh
probably a coincidence that this random stranger was here and marched on heading
for the door. She had left her boyfriend behind who she did not want to hear
anything from anymore. She stepped outside and took a deep breath to calm her
down. She looked up; the rain had stopped falling fortunately. She sped-walked to
the nearest park she could find, she needed some peace and quiet to gather her
thoughts. She found one with grass, benches and a little pond with ducks and
decided to sit down on a bench. She had not had time to gather what she was feeling
as she felt so confused, she had not given him an chance to explain himself but a
part of her didn’t even want to know. She felt sad inside as she was looking forward
to this day a lot but it had turned out to be a complete disaster.
An old lady wobbled over and sat down next to her. She smiled and said “Hello
dear”; she had not bothered to say anything back but gave back a half-hearted
attempt at a smile and looked towards the pond looking very depressed and sad.
The old lady got out a loaf of bread and started to throw it on the floor in small
pieces. She had no clue why the old lady was doing that but then she found her
answer. Bird-feeding. Suddenly so many birds came and milled around the small
pieces of bread on the floor. She sighed and looked back towards the pond. The old
lady noticed all the sighing she was doing so then asked kindly, “Do you want to feed
the birds, dear?” She replied back with, “No, it’s okay.” After a while, the old lady
wobbled away and had left the loaf of bread on the bench. All the small pieces of
bread on the floor were eaten but the birds were still milling round, probably hoping
for more. She reached out for the bread and cut small pieces of it out and threw it
on the ground. The birds started to scatter round for it again. After another couple
of minutes had passed, she saw a shadowy figure coming her way that was blocking
the sunlight which had magically appeared in the sky again. She looked up and was
quite surprised to see who was standing before her. It was the guy from the
restaurant. The same guy she had accidentally smiled to when she was on her way to
the restaurant. She could not believe her eyes, she was shocked indeed! This was no
coincidence; he had followed her yet again to this park. Three run-ins do not make it
a coincidence no more. “Are you stalking me?” She asked. He sat down; he smiled
3. and also laughed at what she said. “Would it make me a creep if I said yes?” He
seemed nervous and yet incredibly shy. “Yes” she replied back, slightly laughing too.
His shyness was rubbing off on her because she seemed shy now too. Her day
seemed to look up again as she smiled back at him who carried on smiling at her. His
smile was infectious. “Do you mind if I help you feed the birds?” He suddenly asked
pointing towards the direction of the loaf of bread in her hand. She completely
forgot she had that in her hands still, she shyly handed it over and when he reached
over to take it, his hand touched the top of her hands. She froze in her tracks and
looked back up at him. He noticed too, as he looked back up at her too. The loaf of
bread still between them, their hands still touching, she felt sparks flying.
