The Creation Of The Iroquois Creation Story
The Iroquois Creation Story is set before the existence of humans as we know them, but not absent
of a physical place, or other beings. The Iroquois Creation Story has a very supernatural setting with
many mythical and magical elements. The first lines of the story stated, "Among the ancients there
were two worlds in existence. The lower world was in great darkness; – the possession of the great
monster; but the upper world was inhabited by mankind." The physical setting starts out in in the
upper world, but changes to the lower world when, as stated in the story, the mattress the woman
laid on "sunk down towards the dark world." Eventually the setting changes one more time when the
mattress landed on the back of a turtle, and eventually changed in to an island. "While holding her,
the turtle increased every moment and became a considerable island of earth." The inhabitants of
these settings are just as enigmatic as the actual setting. Mankind inhabited the upper world we
know but the lower world was "the possession of the great monster". The monsters of the lower
world are never described, except we know for sure that there was a turtle where the woman came to
rest. Eventually the inhabitants of the lower world would include Enigonhahetgea and Enigorio,
who would go on to transform the setting even more. Unlike The Iroquois Creation Story, chapter III
of The Last of the Mohicans is set in a more realistic environment. There are no supernatural
elements. The author

The Great Awakening And Second Great Awakening
Many colonists came to America in order to escape the constraints of the Church of England, but
continued to establish colonies that were built on Biblical principles. Due in part to the strictness
and intolerance of the Puritan religion and differing beliefs among other religions, church
membership began to dwindle and many people in later generations were either excluded from or
decided against, joining the church. The Great Awakening and Second Great Awakening, as
described by Butler, Wacker, and Stout (2003), were religious movements that emphasized Biblical
teachings and the importance of a life changing experience through belief in Jesus Christ as well as
the importance of spreading that message to others. Through large camp meetings like the Cane
Ridge Revival, charismatic preachers brought the good news of salvation through Christ to a
multitude of people, many of whom were disillusioned with the social and political climate of the
times. This message of hope and morality is needed even more so today, in a world filled with
hopelessness, crime, hate and drugs. Of course caution has to be taken to ensure that the
emotionalism of present day religion is based on the model of Jesus, who taught sinners in a spirit of
love, and not in the method of the religious leaders of Biblical times, who were self–righteous and
condemning.
Revivals in America, known as the Great Awakening and Second Great Awakening, began with
George Whitefield in the 1730's and continued on and

Coal Craze: Need for Coal Produces Environmental Damage I sat quietly in the large van. Everyone
was quiet. We were swaying back and forth as the car rounded each bend, moving with the
mountain. The car slowly climbed up, revealing more peaks. I took in the atmosphere with every
breath. The mountain rose and fell like sand dunes. Fog blanketed the mountaintop illuminating the
green tree tops and emphasizing the dark leaves of others. The van continued in peace. As we swung
around one last corner, the silence was broken and a unified gasp filled the vehicle. Our sight was
stolen. The utopian mountaintop was replaced with flat, gray, barren land. The passengers were

It is clearly stated in the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) that
surface mining operations cause environmental and social damage "by impairing natural beauty, by
damaging the property of citizens, by creating hazards dangerous to life and property by degrading
the quality of life in local communities..." (#6). Surface mining causes more damage to the
environment than other methods. Everything ranging from air and water pollution to degrading land
and loss of biodiversity has been caused by surface mining. The Appalachian mountain region is the
most diverse forest in the world. There are a large number of salamanders and migratory birds,
along with waterways, the first link in the food chain that supports the entire forest. Valley fills,
where overburden from surface mining is dumped, can cover up streams, thus breaking the food
chain. In an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) study, it was found that a large number of
mayflies have disappeared. This may seem like a small loss, but it will affect other creatures in the
future. As more and more chains break in the food chain, the less diverse the forest is. It was also
found that the cerulean warblers, a migratory bird, has been decreasing in population. In fact, over
40 years, the cerulean warbler has decreased by 82% (McQuaid). These small creatures are vital to
the diverse ecosystem of the Appalachian mountains.

Business Study Of KFC In The Fast Food Industry

Business Studies: Fast Food Industry
KFC is the fast food franchise of my choice, it is well known for its "Finger Licken Good" chicken
food products that attract a wide target market across South Africa and many other countries. Its
well–known brand is marketed well through television, radio, billboard advertisements and many
more, but what actually attracts the customers is the original taste and variation of chicken pieces
served at all these KFC franchises. Not only, is KFC tending to the needs of the stakeholders, but it
has also been paying close attention to corporate social responsibility in the community, through its
"Add Hope" campaign. Thus making it a worthy franchise to support, however there are many

In 2009, the Sunday Times (of SA) Top Brands Awards addressed KFC in being the most dominant
restaurant brand, overtaking other South African and international brands. KFC was also the only
fast food franchise to place in the Top 10 list of brands throughout all the industries. KFC in 2014
won a number of awards from Marketing Excellence Awards and Loyalty & Engagement Awards in
Singapore. KFC won Gold for Excellence in Consumer Insights/market Research, and Silver for
Excellence in Direct Marketing category at the Marketing Excellence Awards. KFC also won Silver
for Best CRM Strategy, and Silver for Best Use of Consumer Insights & Analytics at the Loyalty &

The Hunger Games By Suzanne Collins
In the "Hunger Games", citizens in thirteen districts are subordinates to the citizens of the capital.
These subordinates were forced to work for the capital and were given no mercy – there were public
beatings for crimes and even their kids were killed on a comical television show for the capital
citizens. These ideas, which Suzanne Collins used in her book, can be traced to our own past.
Similar to the forced labor and abuse the Capital imposed on the district members in the "Hunger
Games", blacks in early United States were treated very poorly. Ironically, many people living in the
United States after the Revolutionary War were still oppressed, slavery still existed, and
discrimination was prevalent. Slavery did get banned in the ... Show more content on

The registration and bond were irregularly enforced. Many blacks got away with not registering,
however, a rapid increase of blacks caused an enforcement of the regulation. This enforcement,
resulted in over a thousand free blacks fleeing the state to Canada or other states. Blacks in Ohio
were also limited politically. They could not vote, hold office, or testify in court. In 1860, the
regulation on voting was modified some, yet only mulattoes were given the right to vote. Blacks
also could not enlist in the state militia. Socially, blacks were also at a disadvantage in Ohio. Whites
did not want to associate with blacks in the state. When a plan had been made to settle around 500
ex–slaves from Virginia in Ohio, they "threatened armed attack" (Horton et Horton 107).
Discrimination was a daily occurrence for blacks, particularly in southern Ohio, near the Ohio River,
which acted as a border between slavery and non–slavery land. Free blacks were limited in regard to
which jobs they could have. No free black could work unless they had a valid license and they were
generally offered the worst jobs available. At Cincinnati 's riverfront, "men gathered each day" in
search of jobs (Horton and Horton 110). The blacks were typically, only given "the least desirable
jobs" available (Horton and Horton 110). These jobs were temporary and were

The Kentucky Open Records Act Of 1976
Introduction
The Commonwealth of Kentucky enacted law governing open records in 1976. The law mandates
agencies release applicable records to the public upon appropriate requests. The Louisville Metro
Police Department adopted a policy to address and comply with this law. I will review and discuss
how LMPD applies its policy in order to stay in compliance with this law. I will also evaluate any
improvements to the policy for better or more efficient application.
Summary of law
Kentucky's open records laws are covered under Kentucky Revised Statutes (KRS) 61.870–61.884.
The law was enacted as a result of the Kentucky Open Records Act of 1976. In summary, the law
requires government agencies to release records for public examination. Specifically, KRS 61.871
states "The General Assembly finds and declares that the basic policy of KRS 61.870 to 61.884 is
that free and open examination of public records is in the public interest and the exceptions provided
for by KRS 61.878 or otherwise provided by law shall be strictly construed, even though such
examination may cause inconvenience or embarrassment to public officials or others." The records
include documents, photographs, recordings, and reports. The law details how government agencies
are required to respond to requests, which records are exempt, application of fees and an appeal
process for denied requests. The main source of requests comes from media sources and attorneys
however anyone can make a request.

Examples Of Stereotypes In Cold Mountain
Appalachian Literature provides a way to gain insight about the common stereotypes that are
applied to specific gender. In literature, Appalachia men are shown to be valued less than outsiders
as a result of the stereotypes applied to them. They are perceived as lazy drunks and incompetent
males, resulting in outsiders viewing themselves as superior and Appalachian males as
untrustworthy. Appalachian men attempt to prove their worth, while maintaining their pride. In Cold
Mountain by Charles Frazier, Inman, who is from the mountains of Appalachia, goes off to war and
leaves the war as soon as the opportunity presents itself. Regardless of his appearance, during the
time of the war Inman presents himself with pride about where he came from ... Show more content

Appearance is now a visual image that is introduced into the stereotypes of men in Appalachia. In
the films Lawless, The Dollmaker, and Songcatcher the men are consistently trying to prove
themselves to outsiders. In the films the men are portrayed as the stereotypical mountain man based
on their appearance and actions. There is a clear distinction between the outsider men and the
Appalachian men, simply by their physical appearance. The way the men dress in the films confirms
the stereotypical idea of how people in Appalachia dress, reinforcing stereotypical ideas that they
are untrustworthy and not equals. The majority of the Appalachian men wore overalls, dirty or torn
clothing, and had dirt on their face. In the eyes of the outsiders, the Appalachian men could not be
trusted because they looked dirty therefore were worth less than outsiders. In comparison to the eyes
of the Appalachian men, those who dressed in more formal clothing could not be trusted. In
Lawless, the Bondurant brothers dressed this way and outsiders believed they are not trustable
because they fell into the stereotype. In The Dollmaker, before the move to Detroit, Clovis dressed
the same way, as well as the other Appalachian men shown in the film. Also in the film Songcatcher,
we see the Appalachian men dress in similar ways. Once Jack Bondurant obtained money to afford
to buy new clothes, he was taken seriously and no longer threatened by the outsiders when he sold
the moonshine (Lawless). When Clovis moved into Detroit and obtained credit or money, he
changes his appearance to conform to the ways outsiders dressed therefore he no longer fit the
stereotypical Appalachian man in his appearance (The

Abraham Lincoln 's Political Legacy
In chapter eight of the book Abraham Lincoln's political legacy is looked at. It goes in depth on how
during the Reconstruction, the republican party essentially ruined the South for twelve years by
instituting puppet governments that constantly raised taxes but provided very few public benefits
(7). This chapter talks also talks about how the republican party stole money from the raised taxes. It
seems like the main goal for the government at this point was to become an empire under Abraham
Lincoln and his business supporters. "Lincoln's own Reconstruction ideas made a mockery of
democracy (227). "He believed that at least 10 percent of the southern population probably had
Unionist sympathies, and he wanted representatives of that group to be put into place by the
Republican Party as the governors, mayors, and local public officials of the Southern states after the
war" (227). Abraham Lincoln seems like he is trying to get all the power he can by taking control of
the south and making them do certain duties after the war is over. Lincoln was trying to explore
Central Government according to Richard Bensel (232).
Chapter nine describes Lincoln's economic legacy (7). Lincoln was trying to get easy votes from the
majority of the people and he knew he can do that with the northern states. The south on the other
hand did not agree with his policies and the "American System" he wanted to establish. The only
things that were standing in his way to have complete power was, the

Rhetorical Analysis Of Kentucky Fried Chicken
Kentucky fried chicken, also known as KFC, have made many commercials over time. This analysis
is on a specific old commercial, sadly of unknown age, but probably from around 1950–1960. The
commercial in question is found on YouTube, and it's made in USA. KFC is a fast food chain that
sells fried chicken, amongst other things, and is especially popular is the US.
To summarize the commercial it starts with a few women being displayed, all thinking about what to
serve for dinner. Luckily Colonel Sanders has the answer, they show a clip from one of the many
KFCs in the country and show the chicken being made. A family then sits down and happily enjoys
a meal of Kentucky fried chicken and at the end of the clip, a special two for one price is ... Show

The fact that they have a special price is great, but just putting a picture on the screen is not what we
want to see. As mentioned before, the music is suiting to the commercial, however it hasn't any
excitement to it. In the whole, the clip has an old feel to it, in a negative way. It is an old
commercial, which makes it rather obvious that it will look old, but that part is not appreciated by
everyone today.
There are a few things that could be modified to make it better, for example the special price. To
make it more interesting, it should be moving after a few seconds, for instance display someone
enjoying the two for one meal. The ancient feeling is a bit hard to remove without remaking the
entire commercial today, but maybe that's a good thing. This commercial isn't like the rest and
perhaps that's what people like about it. If I received the chance to make some small adjustments I
would probably start with finding them a catchphrase.
To wrap it all up, KFC has really succeeded with this commercial, it's convincing and looks
delicious. There is a slight problem though, I'm a vegetarian, therefore I won't buy the product. I
also happen to know the truth behind the meat industry and do not wish to support it. My opinions
however, do not have anything to do with the commercial, and if I wasn't aware of all this, I would
probably buy the Kentucky fried

I Have The Pleasure Of Teaching Maiyuki Druen Essay
I have had the pleasure of teaching Maiyuki Druen for three years; as an 8th grader in Advanced
Geometry, as a sophomore in Math 174 Dual Credit Pre–Calculus through Morehead State
University, and currently as a junior in AP Calculus. In 8th grade, Maiyuki chose to arrive at school
an hour earlier in order to take Advanced Geometry at the high school. She was by far the best
student in the class, even though she was in a class of extremely bright freshmen and sophomore
high school students. Constantly pursuing opportunities for herself, as a sophomore, she chose to
take a dual credit class designed for juniors and seniors. She requested special permission in order to
take this college level class as a sophomore, and it was granted based on her stellar academic record.
She continues to push herself academically in my AP Calculus class. She accepts the challenging
problems I assign to the class as an opportunity to further develop her understanding of the
mathematics we are studying. She often spends time analyzing the different approaches to a problem
in order to determine the best course of action, and will diligently work the solution discussing her
results with her peers. Often I will observe her having a discussion about the problem solving
process with a fellow student rather than just conferring about her solution.
While actively engaging in class discussions, she will articulate beautiful solutions in such detail
that even the most struggling students can

The Appalachian Region
The Appalachian region is one of the most valuable areas of the United States. It is rich in many
natural aspects and is home to some of the hardest working citizens in this country. Unfortunately,
Appalachia is also home to a variety of harsh social problems including severe drug abuse and a
gripping poverty facing a large portion of Appalachian citizens. The two of these issues seem to go
hand in hand in many cases, so the solution of one could also lead to the solution of the other.
Appalachians have always had a history of handling their own problems, these drastic social
problems are no different.
The entire country is facing a serious drug abuse epidemic, and Appalachia sees the effects of this
epidemic as much or more than any other part of the country. As the coal industry dies, jobs are
disappearing much more quickly than new industries are able to replace the jobs that have been lost.
This is causing many Appalachian citizens to turn to other means of producing an income, whether
they are legal or not. One of the most popular sources of illegal income in Appalachia is the drug
trade, more specifically, the trade of prescription drugs. In the 1990s, many pharmaceutical
companies began aggressively marketing their new prescription drugs such as OxyContin and other
prescription pain killers to the citizens of Appalachia for the abundance of work related injuries
from the dangerous jobs they have done their entire lives. Heroin has also recently become a drug of
choice

for creating the Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) franchise and later acting as the company's goodwill

He had a vision to share his "finger lickin' good" chicken with the rest of the world and to do so he
had to find someone who was willing to promote his chicken recipe.
This is where we see Colonel Sanders' persistence really show, as he traveled from door to door in
his neighbourhood trying to promote his idea, only to be rejected by each and every member of his
community. Later, he decided to travel by car to restaurants where he even cooked his chicken in
front of his potential investors but he faced more rejection. In fact, he was faced with rejection one
thousand and eight times to be exact. Only restaurant number one thousand and nine finally
accepted and was fully willing to listen to Sanders' idea. A deal was made between the two partners
in which it was agreed upon that for every piece of chicken the restaurant sold, Sanders' would get
one nickel and he would deliver a packet of his ready–mixed spices to the restaurant so that his
recipe would remain a secret.
Later, by 1964 there were six hundred franchises that had been selling his trademark chicken. This is
when Sanders' made the decision to sell his company for two million dollars and became the
company's Goodwill Ambassador. Colonel Sander's became and still is the world's most

The Problems With Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Essay
Although most senators, representatives and school officials support common core state standards
(CCSS), they have not received or researched the history of how CCSS introduced itself.
Furthermore, they do not understand that local control is being taken away, which results in the
eventual destruction of excellent, local schools, students, and future generations. Two private trade
organizations located in Washington, D.C, wrote the CCSS at the request of Achieve, a company
created by Bill and Melinda Gates. Thus, CCSS did not arise from the state level but of an interested

This amendment pushed Ohio into the wrong direction especially in regards to protecting a student's
privacy.
Although Ohio's governor, Ted Strickland, signed and agreed to adopt a set of national standards in
June 2009 to obtain 400 million dollars in Race To The Top (RTTT) money, he had not read or
reviewed these standards as the completed CCSS were not published until July 2009. The Standards
simply passed through the Ohio Congress without knowing the dangers. According to the article
"Myths versus Facts" written by an anti–CCSS group called Truth in American Education, most
states implemented Common Core to " be eligible to compete [in] the federal Race to Top Funding."
At the request of Achieve Inc., the National Governor's Association (NGA) and the Chief Counsel of
State School Officers (CCSSO) wrote national standards called CCSS. David Coleman, the new
president of the State College Boards, admits that he had to sell these national standards to the
governors. Although Coleman does not have any background in education, he received instruction to
rewrite the SAT and ACT to align these national tests to the Common Core State Standards. The
question remains as to whether CCSS began as a state–led initiative or were established
unconstitutionally? Did the 200 million dollars that Ohio received upon signing and the promise of
an additional 200 million dollar at the full implementation of Common Core influence the

Daniel Boone Research Paper
The famous trail blazer and frontiersman Daniel Boone spent his early childhood on what is now the
Daniel Boone Homestead. He grew up on the homestead, where he learned to love the wilderness.
In 1750, when Daniel was fifth teen years old, his parents decided to move from the homestead.
They moved to western North Carolina where they could own more land. After his family moved,
other noble families like the Maugridge and DeTurks bought the land and lived there. They built
many additions to the 579 acres of land, such as adding saw mills, barns, blacksmith houses and the
remodeling the Boone home itself. The historical site of the Daniel Boone Homestead was preserved

The Expansion Of The Western Expansion During The...
The narrative of America has always been associated with Western Expansion using bounds and
leaps starting from the East Coast until the Pacific. The acquisition of Alaska and Hawaii, though
not included in the historical literature, signified the expansion of Americans westward maintaining
the ideology of the Manifest Destiny. The Western expansion during the nineteenth century was
aided by various factors such as purchases, treaties, and wars with the Native Americans. This essay
develops the chronological events associated with the Western expansion that took place between
1860 and 1890.
According to Kinnahan (407), the 19th century in America was marked by the continuous and
tremendous expansion of agriculture and industry as well as settlement throughout the continent.
The country's population more than doubled by the 1890 census. Most of the financial progress was
concentrated in the plains, Midwest, and Northwest states. Particularly, the northwest became the
industrial periphery of the nation controlling more than 85 percent of the United States' processing
and manufacturing of raw materials in the West and Midwest. The South thrived as an agricultural
state with minimal industrial activities.
For many years prior to the Civil War, the Northern states were forced to conform to the wayward
policies instituted by the South. The South held most of the Senate but as soon as their power began
to dwindle, their unscrupulous laws were reformed. Some of the policies that

The Kentucky Fried Chicken Corporation (KFC) is the franchisor of KFC restaurants. KFC's

Good," and the portrait of Colonel Harlan Sanders. KFC grants licenses to its franchisees to use
these marks in connection with the preparations and sale of "Original Recipe Kentucky Fried

Marion–Kay filed a counterclaim, alleging violation of antitrust law. The issue in this case is
whether or not Marion–Kay acted ethically in selling its seasoning to the KFC franchisees. The rules
of law in this case are 1) the violation of the Lanham Trademark Act (which provides for registration
of trademarks and service marks to prohibit others from misusing these marks) through false
descriptions and representation of Marion–Kay seasoning products to KFC franchisees of
"Kentucky Fried Chicken" restaurants and that Marion–Kay tortuously interfered with KFC's
contractual relations with its franchisees, and 2) Section 1 of the Sherman Act which prohibits
contracts, combinations, and conspiracies in restraint of trade. The application of law was the ruling
that in a situation involving the sale of franchise items, there can be no unlawful tying arrangement
absent some proof that there has been a sale of two separate products. In this instance, the tied
product was manufactured pursuant to a secret formula, in which the trademark actually served as a
representation of the end product marketed by the franchisor to which the public expects. The Court
was precluded from finding that the trademark was a separate product from the allegedly tied item
because the trademark itself and the quality of the end product are identified as a single item.
In conclusion, Marion–Kay did not act ethically by selling its seasoning to the KFC franchisees
because it

Mountaintop Mining : The Natural Beauty And Biodiversity...
Introduction
With its rolling hills and breathtaking foliage, Central Appalachia is home to some of America 's
most beautiful views, attracting thousands of tourists to the region each year. However, Central
Appalachia is also home to vast deposits of energy resources, mainly coal. In order to extract this
supply of cheap energy, mining companies have turned to a practice called mountaintop removal
mining, or simply mountaintop mining. Mountaintop mining is a form of surface mining that
involves removing the tops and sides of a summit in order to more quickly and efficiently remove
underlying coal deposits. Although this kind of mining is cheaper than traditional subsurface
methods, its social and environmental costs are steep, making it a major source of contention in both
the Central Appalachian region and America as a whole. Elements of mountaintop removal mining
that have contributed to its controversial nature are how it affects the economies of surrounding
communities, leads to poor bodily health, and warps the natural beauty and biodiversity of the
Appalachian environment.
Background
Mountaintop removal mining, otherwise known as mountaintop mining, began in Appalachia in the
1960s as an extension of conventional strip mining techniques. In this form of mining, the top and
sides of a summit are altered or removed in order to extract underlying coal deposits. This method
allows coal mining companies to reach coal that would normally be too difficult or dangerous to

Expansionism As A Policy Of Promoting Economic Growth
Expansionism is a policy of promoting economic growth. The main concern arises when expanding
territory does not prove to be beneficial to all races, as its "growth" in territory may simply be
destruction for others. The expansionism and encroachment forced by capitalists can ultimately be
categorized as oppression and white superiority, as it resulted in the deterioration of culture, natural
rights, and mental stability for the Native Americans. The interests of the white capitalists to acquire
Western land limited the natural rights of the Native Americans. It is the beliefs of white superiority
and falsified authority that lead to the mistreatment of indigenous people like the Native Americans.
Several incidents in American history present white capitalists neglecting the opinions and rights of
Indians, for profit and expansionism, as "An estimated two million indigenous people in the United
States were reduced, through slaughter, starvation, and disease, to less than a quarter of a million
people by 1900" (Kratzer). Although the Treaty of Fort Laramie of 1868 stated that "no white person
or persons shall be permitted" to enter the Black Hills, the administration of Ulysses S. Grant
pressured the Indians to sell the Black Hills, as it was a major resource of gold (Miller). The Native
Americans adamantly refused to sell the Black Hills, as the mountain range held significant cultural
importance to them. These statements were not given for consideration by the white

There was talk about a man named Peg Leg who was helping slaves escape to freedom by following
the drinking gourd. The path to freedom was to walk up the bank of the Tombigbee river following
the dead trees. We would come to two mountains where the river stopped and continued on the other

Review on Mrs Trollope's Domestic Manners of Americans Essay
Mrs. Trollope depicts her seemingly pleasurable exploration in America with caricature which
grounded on the constantly comparison between the American domestic life with her own
experience in Europe with pretension. I have to say that to some extent, this is good travel narrative
full of exaggerated anecdotes rather than real description of Domestic manners of the Americans as
the reader expected. Mrs. Trollope amused herself largely by sneering at the system of new nation
America and its people and enjoyed her ascendency over the folly Americans. Why did she show
such scornful attitude to American style?

some poor people to show her sympathy to make herself believe that she is still leading a better life
over those wretched people. Mrs. Trollope amused herself with coming through the Phrenological
society's ephemeral fate on the 3rd day when subscriptions were expected to be paid. She shows
great contempt on Miss Wright's "ridiculous" conception on giving the blacks equal education to
prove the human are equal. "Could this fact be once fully established, she conceived that the Negro
cause would stand on firmer ground than it had yet done, and the degraded rank which they have

Mary Breckinridge: Pioneering Rural Prenatal and Birthing Care
Kescia L. Belbin
MCPHS University
Mary Breckinridge: Pioneering Rural Prenatal and Birthing Care During the early 1900's, the
healthcare system for families in rural areas was virtually nonexistent. Mary Breckinridge noticed a
need for more healthcare access in these areas, which led her to create the Frontier Nursing Service
(FNS). Through her work, Breckinridge was able to provide thousands of families with the
healthcare that they needed, while also bringing an entirely new field of study to the United States.
What led her to believe the United States needed a change? What impact did her work have on the
United States, and is it still relevant today? We will be looking at the significant impact that Mary
Breckinridge made to the field of nursing and to the overall healthcare system of the United States.
Mary Breckinridge received her degree in nursing from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in
1910. She proceeded to teach French and hygiene at a women's school, until tragedy hit her.
Following the death of her infant daughter in 1916 and the death of her 4–year–old son 1918,
Breckinridge decided to change her career path. After spending some time working as a public
health nurse in the United States, Breckinridge went to France where she worked with the American

The Pros And Cons Of Mountaintop Removal
Did you know that mountaintop removal coal provides around three percent of our countries
electricity? That does not seem like much, especially considering all the damage it causes. Large
areas of wildlife habitat have been destroyed so these mountaintop removal companies can gain and
make a profit. These companies do not care about the people in the communities they are hurting.
Companies also do not understand that animals can become exterminated from this, and they have
been. Animals that live in the mountains and streams lose their homes and can be killed. "In
September 2004, a boulder went careening off a mountaintop removal site in western Virginia. It
smashed through a mobile home, killing a three year old boy in his sleep" (McNeil). ... Show more

These explosives destroy around six hundred feet of mountain soil. According to Mountaintop
Removal 101, "More than five hundred mountains have been destroyed by mountaintop removal.
Box–cut mining, steep slope mining, cross–ridge mining, area mining, mountaintop mining and area
mining are all types of mountaintop removal. This removal process usually takes place in east
Kentucky, southern West Virginia, southwest Virginia, and in east Tennessee" (AppalachianVoices).
First, the company has to clear the area of land on the mountaintop. Second, they start blasting.
Usually this includes using millions of explosives and machines to blow up the mountaintop. Next
on the list of steps would be the digging. The leftover waste is then dumped into rivers and
contaminates the water. Coal companies are legally allowed to dump the debris because of the Clean
Water Act. The next step is the processing of the coal by chemically treating it. After the miners see
the coal, they start remove it using huge coal–moving machines and take it to a coal processing
plant. After the coal is chemically treated, the company is required to, by law, build on the flattened
land. This way the land will not be wasted. Though it is said that mountaintop removal is the most
effective and most cost effective way to operate, many people say it is harmful to the environment.
Mountaintop removal can potentially expose many locals to safety. It has been banned in many
places because of the hazardous effects it can

The Legacy Of The Abraham Lincoln
Republican Abraham Lincoln was elected president in November 1860, and would be inaugurated
on March 4, 1861. Tensions had been growing between southern slave states and northern free
states. Lincoln hailed from the Northern free state of Illinois, and made his anti–slavery views as he
campaigned. Lincoln did not receive any votes from the southern states; his name was not even on
their ballots. All of the slave states were outraged when Lincoln was elected, and feared he would
abolish slavery. As a result, South Carolina seceded from the union on December 20, 1860. This led
many other southern states to consider seceding. 100 Mississippi delegates gathered in Jackson,
Mississippi for a convention to discuss secession. An ordinance for secession was read aloud at the
convention on January 9, 1861. Most of the delegates were in favor of secession; however, there
were a small group of men who did not want Mississippi to secede. Three of these men each
proposed one *amendment* to the ordinance in order to delay or halt the secession of Mississippi
from the union.
In the first proposal, proposed by Jacob Yerger, all the slave states would gather at a convention to
"determine what amendments of the Constitution of the United States are necessary and proper to
secure the rights of the slaveholding States in the Union, and to finally settle and adjust all questions
relating to the subject of slavery in such manner as will relieve the South from the further agitation

Life for Harland David Sanders was not easy. He was born on September 9, 1890 in Henryville,
Indiana to a rather unfortunate family. He was the oldest of three children, having a younger brother

Harland was just 6 years old. His father came back from work one day with a fever, and died later

and it gave him a fairly stable income. After about a year of this job, he found that he wanted to
settle down and start a family. So in 1908, Harland married Josephine King. They had three children

What Representativeness Heuristic Is Inappropriately...
I remember and incident that the representativeness heuristic was inappropriately applied in judging
me. I was playing pickup basketball while visiting family away from my home state of Kentucky at
the time, and I was wearing a University of Kentucky tee–shirt. As I walked up a team was forming
and one of the players looked at me and said, "I'll take the guy from Kentucky", presumably basing
his decision on the popularity of the sport in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. As play progressed,
my lack of excellence in the game demonstrated clearly that fandom and stardom work quite
independently of one another.
I have made inappropriate judgments based on availability heuristic many times over the years. I can
recall one case in particular from my childhood during the early days of AIDS coming into public
view. Around the age of 10, I remember watching a particularly disturbing news report on AIDS,
and although the details of the report are lost to me now, at the time they were fighting. I had a very
limited understanding of the disease and how it was contracted, and coincidentally I woke up the
next morning not feeling well, convinced that I somehow had been infected with the dreaded
disease.

The Emergence of Appalachian Stereotypes in 19th Century...
In the world of Appalachia, stereotypes are abundant. There are stories told of mountaineers as lazy,
bewildered, backward, and yet happy and complacent people. Mountain women are seen as diligent,
strong, hard willed, and overall sturdy and weathered, bearing the burden of their male counterparts.
These ideas of mountain life did not come out of thin air; they are the direct product of sensational

These proliferated the idea of unkempt and unruly natured people, pastoral, lazy and at the same
time content to remain in a disparagingly hostile existence. These writers and illustrators were often
men who traveled through the mountain regions and spent time with the people there (McNeil, 59).
They were frequently invited to stay with families who were honored to have them as guests, and
treated to every hospitality an Appalachian family could afford. When James Lane Allen, who was a
teacher in Lexington KY for twelve years, decided to change careers in 1885, traveled to New York
to become a writer, while there he was told to "find a definite field and explore it for literacy
materials." (McNeal, 59) Deciding to return to Kentucky, Allen began publishing his works in
magazines in 1886, his work primarily focusing on Kentucky as two distinct regions, the civilized
Bluegrass Region and the rough Cumberland Mountains. In James Lane Allen's Through
Cumberland Gap on Horseback, the mention is made to the beauty of the land and that the climate
was just the same but that traveling to the mountain region was not only difficult as they had to take
a train then a wagon ride, followed by a trek on horseback, but a lengthy process. Among the
experiences recorded Allen describes the meeting of several locals and this is where his

The Creation Of The Iroquois Creation Story

  • 1. The Creation Of The Iroquois Creation Story The Iroquois Creation Story is set before the existence of humans as we know them, but not absent of a physical place, or other beings. The Iroquois Creation Story has a very supernatural setting with many mythical and magical elements. The first lines of the story stated, "Among the ancients there were two worlds in existence. The lower world was in great darkness; – the possession of the great monster; but the upper world was inhabited by mankind." The physical setting starts out in in the upper world, but changes to the lower world when, as stated in the story, the mattress the woman laid on "sunk down towards the dark world." Eventually the setting changes one more time when the mattress landed on the back of a turtle, and eventually changed in to an island. "While holding her, the turtle increased every moment and became a considerable island of earth." The inhabitants of these settings are just as enigmatic as the actual setting. Mankind inhabited the upper world we know but the lower world was "the possession of the great monster". The monsters of the lower world are never described, except we know for sure that there was a turtle where the woman came to rest. Eventually the inhabitants of the lower world would include Enigonhahetgea and Enigorio, who would go on to transform the setting even more. Unlike The Iroquois Creation Story, chapter III of The Last of the Mohicans is set in a more realistic environment. There are no supernatural elements. The author ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Great Awakening And Second Great Awakening Many colonists came to America in order to escape the constraints of the Church of England, but continued to establish colonies that were built on Biblical principles. Due in part to the strictness and intolerance of the Puritan religion and differing beliefs among other religions, church membership began to dwindle and many people in later generations were either excluded from or decided against, joining the church. The Great Awakening and Second Great Awakening, as described by Butler, Wacker, and Stout (2003), were religious movements that emphasized Biblical teachings and the importance of a life changing experience through belief in Jesus Christ as well as the importance of spreading that message to others. Through large camp meetings like the Cane Ridge Revival, charismatic preachers brought the good news of salvation through Christ to a multitude of people, many of whom were disillusioned with the social and political climate of the times. This message of hope and morality is needed even more so today, in a world filled with hopelessness, crime, hate and drugs. Of course caution has to be taken to ensure that the emotionalism of present day religion is based on the model of Jesus, who taught sinners in a spirit of love, and not in the method of the religious leaders of Biblical times, who were self–righteous and condemning. Revivals in America, known as the Great Awakening and Second Great Awakening, began with George Whitefield in the 1730's and continued on and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Coal Industry : Need For Coal Produces Environmental Damage Cassidy Selep Love AP Language 1 May 2015 Coal Craze: Need for Coal Produces Environmental Damage I sat quietly in the large van. Everyone was quiet. We were swaying back and forth as the car rounded each bend, moving with the mountain. The car slowly climbed up, revealing more peaks. I took in the atmosphere with every breath. The mountain rose and fell like sand dunes. Fog blanketed the mountaintop illuminating the green tree tops and emphasizing the dark leaves of others. The van continued in peace. As we swung around one last corner, the silence was broken and a unified gasp filled the vehicle. Our sight was stolen. The utopian mountaintop was replaced with flat, gray, barren land. The passengers were shocked and the murmurs bubbled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is clearly stated in the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) that surface mining operations cause environmental and social damage "by impairing natural beauty, by damaging the property of citizens, by creating hazards dangerous to life and property by degrading the quality of life in local communities..." (#6). Surface mining causes more damage to the environment than other methods. Everything ranging from air and water pollution to degrading land and loss of biodiversity has been caused by surface mining. The Appalachian mountain region is the most diverse forest in the world. There are a large number of salamanders and migratory birds, along with waterways, the first link in the food chain that supports the entire forest. Valley fills, where overburden from surface mining is dumped, can cover up streams, thus breaking the food chain. In an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) study, it was found that a large number of mayflies have disappeared. This may seem like a small loss, but it will affect other creatures in the future. As more and more chains break in the food chain, the less diverse the forest is. It was also found that the cerulean warblers, a migratory bird, has been decreasing in population. In fact, over 40 years, the cerulean warbler has decreased by 82% (McQuaid). These small creatures are vital to the diverse ecosystem of the Appalachian mountains. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Business Study Of KFC In The Fast Food Industry Simone Govender Gr:12.2 Business Studies: Fast Food Industry KFC is the fast food franchise of my choice, it is well known for its "Finger Licken Good" chicken food products that attract a wide target market across South Africa and many other countries. Its well–known brand is marketed well through television, radio, billboard advertisements and many more, but what actually attracts the customers is the original taste and variation of chicken pieces served at all these KFC franchises. Not only, is KFC tending to the needs of the stakeholders, but it has also been paying close attention to corporate social responsibility in the community, through its "Add Hope" campaign. Thus making it a worthy franchise to support, however there are many struggles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 2009, the Sunday Times (of SA) Top Brands Awards addressed KFC in being the most dominant restaurant brand, overtaking other South African and international brands. • 9. The Hunger Games By Suzanne Collins In the "Hunger Games", citizens in thirteen districts are subordinates to the citizens of the capital. These subordinates were forced to work for the capital and were given no mercy – there were public beatings for crimes and even their kids were killed on a comical television show for the capital citizens. These ideas, which Suzanne Collins used in her book, can be traced to our own past. Similar to the forced labor and abuse the Capital imposed on the district members in the "Hunger Games", blacks in early United States were treated very poorly. Ironically, many people living in the United States after the Revolutionary War were still oppressed, slavery still existed, and discrimination was prevalent. Slavery did get banned in the ... Many blacks got away with not registering, however, a rapid increase of blacks caused an enforcement of the regulation. This enforcement, resulted in over a thousand free blacks fleeing the state to Canada or other states. Blacks in Ohio were also limited politically. They could not vote, hold office, or testify in court. In 1860, the regulation on voting was modified some, yet only mulattoes were given the right to vote. Blacks also could not enlist in the state militia. Socially, blacks were also at a disadvantage in Ohio. Whites did not want to associate with blacks in the state. When a plan had been made to settle around 500 ex–slaves from Virginia in Ohio, they "threatened armed attack" (Horton et Horton 107). Discrimination was a daily occurrence for blacks, particularly in southern Ohio, near the Ohio River, which acted as a border between slavery and non–slavery land. Free blacks were limited in regard to which jobs they could have. No free black could work unless they had a valid license and they were generally offered the worst jobs available. At Cincinnati 's riverfront, "men gathered each day" in search of jobs (Horton and Horton 110). The blacks were typically, only given "the least desirable jobs" available (Horton and Horton 110). • 11. The Kentucky Open Records Act Of 1976 Introduction The Commonwealth of Kentucky enacted law governing open records in 1976. The law mandates agencies release applicable records to the public upon appropriate requests. The Louisville Metro Police Department adopted a policy to address and comply with this law. I will review and discuss how LMPD applies its policy in order to stay in compliance with this law. I will also evaluate any improvements to the policy for better or more efficient application. Summary of law Kentucky's open records laws are covered under Kentucky Revised Statutes (KRS) 61.870–61.884. The law was enacted as a result of the Kentucky Open Records Act of 1976. In summary, the law requires government agencies to release records for public examination. • 15. Examples Of Stereotypes In Cold Mountain Appalachian Literature provides a way to gain insight about the common stereotypes that are applied to specific gender. In literature, Appalachia men are shown to be valued less than outsiders as a result of the stereotypes applied to them. They are perceived as lazy drunks and incompetent males, resulting in outsiders viewing themselves as superior and Appalachian males as untrustworthy. Appalachian men attempt to prove their worth, while maintaining their pride. In Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier, Inman, who is from the mountains of Appalachia, goes off to war and leaves the war as soon as the opportunity presents itself. Regardless of his appearance, during the time of the war Inman presents himself with pride about where he came from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Appearance is now a visual image that is introduced into the stereotypes of men in Appalachia. In the films Lawless, The Dollmaker, and Songcatcher the men are consistently trying to prove themselves to outsiders. In the films the men are portrayed as the stereotypical mountain man based on their appearance and actions. There is a clear distinction between the outsider men and the Appalachian men, simply by their physical appearance. The way the men dress in the films confirms the stereotypical idea of how people in Appalachia dress, reinforcing stereotypical ideas that they are untrustworthy and not equals. The majority of the Appalachian men wore overalls, dirty or torn clothing, and had dirt on their face. In the eyes of the outsiders, the Appalachian men could not be trusted because they looked dirty therefore were worth less than outsiders. In comparison to the eyes of the Appalachian men, those who dressed in more formal clothing could not be trusted. In Lawless, the Bondurant brothers dressed this way and outsiders believed they are not trustable because they fell into the stereotype. In The Dollmaker, before the move to Detroit, Clovis dressed the same way, as well as the other Appalachian men shown in the film. Also in the film Songcatcher, we see the Appalachian men dress in similar ways. Once Jack Bondurant obtained money to afford to buy new clothes, he was taken seriously and no longer threatened by the outsiders when he sold the moonshine (Lawless). When Clovis moved into Detroit and obtained credit or money, he changes his appearance to conform to the ways outsiders dressed therefore he no longer fit the stereotypical Appalachian man in his appearance (The ... • 17. Abraham Lincoln 's Political Legacy In chapter eight of the book Abraham Lincoln's political legacy is looked at. It goes in depth on how during the Reconstruction, the republican party essentially ruined the South for twelve years by instituting puppet governments that constantly raised taxes but provided very few public benefits (7). This chapter talks also talks about how the republican party stole money from the raised taxes. It seems like the main goal for the government at this point was to become an empire under Abraham Lincoln and his business supporters. "Lincoln's own Reconstruction ideas made a mockery of democracy (227). "He believed that at least 10 percent of the southern population probably had Unionist sympathies, and he wanted representatives of that group to be put into place by the Republican Party as the governors, mayors, and local public officials of the Southern states after the war" (227). Abraham Lincoln seems like he is trying to get all the power he can by taking control of the south and making them do certain duties after the war is over. Lincoln was trying to explore Central Government according to Richard Bensel (232). Chapter nine describes Lincoln's economic legacy (7). Lincoln was trying to get easy votes from the majority of the people and he knew he can do that with the northern states. The south on the other hand did not agree with his policies and the "American System" he wanted to establish. The only things that were standing in his way to have complete power was, the ... • 21. Rhetorical Analysis Of Kentucky Fried Chicken Kentucky fried chicken, also known as KFC, have made many commercials over time. This analysis is on a specific old commercial, sadly of unknown age, but probably from around 1950–1960. The commercial in question is found on YouTube, and it's made in USA. KFC is a fast food chain that sells fried chicken, amongst other things, and is especially popular is the US. To summarize the commercial it starts with a few women being displayed, all thinking about what to serve for dinner. Luckily Colonel Sanders has the answer, they show a clip from one of the many KFCs in the country and show the chicken being made. A family then sits down and happily enjoys a meal of Kentucky fried chicken and at the end of the clip, a special two for one price is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fact that they have a special price is great, but just putting a picture on the screen is not what we want to see. As mentioned before, the music is suiting to the commercial, however it hasn't any excitement to it. In the whole, the clip has an old feel to it, in a negative way. It is an old commercial, which makes it rather obvious that it will look old, but that part is not appreciated by everyone today. There are a few things that could be modified to make it better, for example the special price. To make it more interesting, it should be moving after a few seconds, for instance display someone enjoying the two for one meal. The ancient feeling is a bit hard to remove without remaking the entire commercial today, but maybe that's a good thing. This commercial isn't like the rest and perhaps that's what people like about it. If I received the chance to make some small adjustments I would probably start with finding them a catchphrase. To wrap it all up, KFC has really succeeded with this commercial, it's convincing and looks delicious. There is a slight problem though, I'm a vegetarian, therefore I won't buy the product. I also happen to know the truth behind the meat industry and do not wish to support it. My opinions however, do not have anything to do with the commercial, and if I wasn't aware of all this, I would probably buy the Kentucky fried ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 8th grade, Maiyuki chose to arrive at school an hour earlier in order to take Advanced Geometry at the high school. She was by far the best student in the class, even though she was in a class of extremely bright freshmen and sophomore high school students. Constantly pursuing opportunities for herself, as a sophomore, she chose to take a dual credit class designed for juniors and seniors. She requested special permission in order to take this college level class as a sophomore, and it was granted based on her stellar academic record. She continues to push herself academically in my AP Calculus class. She accepts the challenging problems I assign to the class as an opportunity to further develop her understanding of the mathematics we are studying. She often spends time analyzing the different approaches to a problem in order to determine the best course of action, and will diligently work the solution discussing her results with her peers. Often I will observe her having a discussion about the problem solving process with a fellow student rather than just conferring about her solution. While actively engaging in class discussions, she will articulate beautiful solutions in such detail that even the most struggling students can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. The Appalachian Region The Appalachian region is one of the most valuable areas of the United States. It is rich in many natural aspects and is home to some of the hardest working citizens in this country. Unfortunately, Appalachia is also home to a variety of harsh social problems including severe drug abuse and a gripping poverty facing a large portion of Appalachian citizens. The two of these issues seem to go hand in hand in many cases, so the solution of one could also lead to the solution of the other. Appalachians have always had a history of handling their own problems, these drastic social problems are no different. The entire country is facing a serious drug abuse epidemic, and Appalachia sees the effects of this epidemic as much or more than any other part of the country. As the coal industry dies, jobs are disappearing much more quickly than new industries are able to replace the jobs that have been lost. This is causing many Appalachian citizens to turn to other means of producing an income, whether they are legal or not. One of the most popular sources of illegal income in Appalachia is the drug trade, more specifically, the trade of prescription drugs. In the 1990s, many pharmaceutical companies began aggressively marketing their new prescription drugs such as OxyContin and other prescription pain killers to the citizens of Appalachia for the abundance of work related injuries from the dangerous jobs they have done their entire lives. Heroin has also recently become a drug of choice ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Later, he decided to travel by car to restaurants where he even cooked his chicken in front of his potential investors but he faced more rejection. In fact, he was faced with rejection one thousand and eight times to be exact. Only restaurant number one thousand and nine finally accepted and was fully willing to listen to Sanders' idea. A deal was made between the two partners in which it was agreed upon that for every piece of chicken the restaurant sold, Sanders' would get one nickel and he would deliver a packet of his ready–mixed spices to the restaurant so that his recipe would remain a secret. The Standards simply passed through the Ohio Congress without knowing the dangers. The narrative of America has always been associated with Western Expansion using bounds and leaps starting from the East Coast until the Pacific. The acquisition of Alaska and Hawaii, though not included in the historical literature, signified the expansion of Americans westward maintaining the ideology of the Manifest Destiny. The Western expansion during the nineteenth century was aided by various factors such as purchases, treaties, and wars with the Native Americans. This essay develops the chronological events associated with the Western expansion that took place between 1860 and 1890. According to Kinnahan (407), the 19th century in America was marked by the continuous and tremendous expansion of agriculture and industry as well as settlement throughout the continent. The country's population more than doubled by the 1890 census. Most of the financial progress was concentrated in the plains, Midwest, and Northwest states. Particularly, the northwest became the industrial periphery of the nation controlling more than 85 percent of the United States' processing and manufacturing of raw materials in the West and Midwest. The South thrived as an agricultural state with minimal industrial activities. For many years prior to the Civil War, the Northern states were forced to conform to the wayward policies instituted by the South. The rules of law in this case are 1) the violation of the Lanham Trademark Act (which provides for registration of trademarks and service marks to prohibit others from misusing these marks) through false descriptions and representation of Marion–Kay seasoning products to KFC franchisees of "Kentucky Fried Chicken" restaurants and that Marion–Kay tortuously interfered with KFC's contractual relations with its franchisees, and 2) Section 1 of the Sherman Act which prohibits contracts, combinations, and conspiracies in restraint of trade. • 47. Mountaintop Mining : The Natural Beauty And Biodiversity... Introduction With its rolling hills and breathtaking foliage, Central Appalachia is home to some of America 's most beautiful views, attracting thousands of tourists to the region each year. However, Central Appalachia is also home to vast deposits of energy resources, mainly coal. In order to extract this supply of cheap energy, mining companies have turned to a practice called mountaintop removal mining, or simply mountaintop mining. Mountaintop mining is a form of surface mining that involves removing the tops and sides of a summit in order to more quickly and efficiently remove underlying coal deposits. Although this kind of mining is cheaper than traditional subsurface methods, its social and environmental costs are steep, making it a major source of contention in both the Central Appalachian region and America as a whole. Elements of mountaintop removal mining that have contributed to its controversial nature are how it affects the economies of surrounding communities, leads to poor bodily health, and warps the natural beauty and biodiversity of the Appalachian environment. Background Mountaintop removal mining, otherwise known as mountaintop mining, began in Appalachia in the 1960s as an extension of conventional strip mining techniques. In this form of mining, the top and sides of a summit are altered or removed in order to extract underlying coal deposits. • 55. Expansionism As A Policy Of Promoting Economic Growth Expansionism is a policy of promoting economic growth. The main concern arises when expanding territory does not prove to be beneficial to all races, as its "growth" in territory may simply be destruction for others. The expansionism and encroachment forced by capitalists can ultimately be categorized as oppression and white superiority, as it resulted in the deterioration of culture, natural rights, and mental stability for the Native Americans. The interests of the white capitalists to acquire Western land limited the natural rights of the Native Americans. It is the beliefs of white superiority and falsified authority that lead to the mistreatment of indigenous people like the Native Americans. Several incidents in American history present white capitalists neglecting the opinions and rights of Indians, for profit and expansionism, as "An estimated two million indigenous people in the United States were reduced, through slaughter, starvation, and disease, to less than a quarter of a million people by 1900" (Kratzer). Although the Treaty of Fort Laramie of 1868 stated that "no white person or persons shall be permitted" to enter the Black Hills, the administration of Ulysses S. Grant pressured the Indians to sell the Black Hills, as it was a major resource of gold (Miller). The Native Americans adamantly refused to sell the Black Hills, as the mountain range held significant cultural importance to them. These statements were not given for consideration by the white ... Review on Mrs Trollope's Domestic Manners of Americans Essay Mrs. Trollope depicts her seemingly pleasurable exploration in America with caricature which grounded on the constantly comparison between the American domestic life with her own experience in Europe with pretension. I have to say that to some extent, this is good travel narrative full of exaggerated anecdotes rather than real description of Domestic manners of the Americans as the reader expected. Mrs. Trollope amused herself largely by sneering at the system of new nation America and its people and enjoyed her ascendency over the folly Americans. Why did she show such scornful attitude to American style? The first reason I assume is that she was so eager to settle down in America to start her new life with her children there. Her real ... These companies do not care about the people in the communities they are hurting. Companies also do not understand that animals can become exterminated from this, and they have been. Animals that live in the mountains and streams lose their homes and can be killed. "In September 2004, a boulder went careening off a mountaintop removal site in western Virginia. This removal process usually takes place in east Kentucky, southern West Virginia, southwest Virginia, and in east Tennessee" (AppalachianVoices). First, the company has to clear the area of land on the mountaintop. Second, they start blasting. Usually this includes using millions of explosives and machines to blow up the mountaintop. Next on the list of steps would be the digging. The leftover waste is then dumped into rivers and contaminates the water. Coal companies are legally allowed to dump the debris because of the Clean Water Act. The next step is the processing of the coal by chemically treating it. After the miners see the coal, they start remove it using huge coal–moving machines and take it to a coal processing plant. After the coal is chemically treated, the company is required to, by law, build on the flattened land. This way the land will not be wasted. • 71. The Legacy Of The Abraham Lincoln Republican Abraham Lincoln was elected president in November 1860, and would be inaugurated on March 4, 1861. Tensions had been growing between southern slave states and northern free states. Lincoln hailed from the Northern free state of Illinois, and made his anti–slavery views as he campaigned. Lincoln did not receive any votes from the southern states; his name was not even on their ballots. All of the slave states were outraged when Lincoln was elected, and feared he would abolish slavery. As a result, South Carolina seceded from the union on December 20, 1860. This led many other southern states to consider seceding. 100 Mississippi delegates gathered in Jackson, Mississippi for a convention to discuss secession. An ordinance for secession was read aloud at the convention on January 9, 1861. Most of the delegates were in favor of secession; however, there were a small group of men who did not want Mississippi to secede. Three of these men each proposed one *amendment* to the ordinance in order to delay or halt the secession of Mississippi from the union. In the first proposal, proposed by Jacob Yerger, all the slave states would gather at a convention to "determine what amendments of the Constitution of the United States are necessary and proper to secure the rights of the slaveholding States in the Union, and to finally settle and adjust all questions relating to the subject of slavery in such manner as will relieve the South from the further agitation of ... He was the oldest of three children, having a younger brother named Wilbur and younger sister named Margaret. Their source of income was initially from a part time job that his father had, running errands for farmers around Henryville. His mother stayed home and took care of the kids while their father was working. However, this all changed in 1896 when Harland was just 6 years old. After his military days, he was on his own and had to find a job for himself. He found a job as a U.S. railway fireman, and it gave him a fairly stable income. After about a year of this job, he found that he wanted to settle down and start a family. So in 1908, Harland married Josephine King. They had three children together, 1 boy and two girls. They named the boy Harland Jr. after his father, and the girls Mildred and Margaret. They lived a happy life as a family for a while, until Harland got fired from his fireman position for insubordination. Now Harland Sanders had no source of income and a family to support. This made it too hard for the family, so Josephine decided she would leave him. She took the kids with her and just like that, Harland was on his own again. • 75. What Representativeness Heuristic Is Inappropriately... I remember and incident that the representativeness heuristic was inappropriately applied in judging me. I was playing pickup basketball while visiting family away from my home state of Kentucky at the time, and I was wearing a University of Kentucky tee–shirt. As I walked up a team was forming and one of the players looked at me and said, "I'll take the guy from Kentucky", presumably basing his decision on the popularity of the sport in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. As play progressed, my lack of excellence in the game demonstrated clearly that fandom and stardom work quite independently of one another. I have made inappropriate judgments based on availability heuristic many times over the years. I can recall one case in particular from my childhood during the early days of AIDS coming into public view. Around the age of 10, I remember watching a particularly disturbing news report on AIDS, and although the details of the report are lost to me now, at the time they were fighting. I had a very limited understanding of the disease and how it was contracted, and coincidentally I woke up the next morning not feeling well, convinced that I somehow had been infected with the dreaded disease. There are stories told of mountaineers as lazy, bewildered, backward, and yet happy and complacent people. Mountain women are seen as diligent, strong, hard willed, and overall sturdy and weathered, bearing the burden of their male counterparts. These ideas of mountain life did not come out of thin air; they are the direct product of sensational nineteenth century media including print journalism and illustrative art that has continuously mislead and wrongfully represented the people of Appalachia. These stories, written and told by outsiders, served very little purpose to Appalachian natives other than means of humiliation and degradation. They served mostly to convince readers of the ... These writers and illustrators were often men who traveled through the mountain regions and spent time with the people there (McNeil, 59). They were frequently invited to stay with families who were honored to have them as guests, and treated to every hospitality an Appalachian family could afford. When James Lane Allen, who was a teacher in Lexington KY for twelve years, decided to change careers in 1885, traveled to New York to become a writer, while there he was told to "find a definite field and explore it for literacy materials." (McNeal, 59) Deciding to return to Kentucky, Allen began publishing his works in magazines in 1886, his work primarily focusing on Kentucky as two distinct regions, the civilized Bluegrass Region and the rough Cumberland Mountains. In James Lane Allen's Through Cumberland Gap on Horseback, the mention is made to the beauty of the land and that the climate was just the same but that traveling to the mountain region was not only difficult as they had to take a train then a wagon ride, followed by a trek on horseback, but a lengthy process.
