Cultural Reflection
As i strolled down my neighborhood coming from the gym, I observed my environment and was
able to notice things i never commonly do, the more i walked the more i was able to smell the spices
and scents that made home smell like home. Some scents smelled so familiar like my own home and
mother's cooking and others unique, as a matter of fact i was able to feel the warmth from each
house like a cozy blanket welcoming me in. I listened and was able to hear the laughter and joy of
family dinners, movie nights, their own unique ways of bonding which embraced the fact that my
community had a diversity of people who had their own way of carrying their roots. Yes, indeed
they had their own ways of bonding which are different yet so similar. I concluded that many teens
who grew up in their community are introduced to their culture but accumulate the traits of their
environment which makes them question who or what they really are. In addition it is what shapes
up our lives as we grow. How different our cultures are but yet so alike in the community. We
unionize what we observe and inherit from other people and their cultures so in the end we are a mix
up cultures and is what makes us diverse to modernize our culture.
My parents Notably as i grew older is when i started to understand ethnicity, race and culture which
caused a lot of unanswered questions. I wasn't so sure what i was because i loved a lot of things
from different cultures, different to what i was introduced to.

Pollution In Los Angeles
Pollution and trash build up in Los Angeles has been accumulating and worsening for many years.
The homeless population in Los Angeles also has been at an all time high. In areas like Van Nuys,
Reseda, Downtown, and many more, there needs to be more trash cans near homeless encampments
and along with those, cameras, which will document and hopefully successfully pinpoint potential
littering suspects. The trash is not only harmful and damaging to our community but also Earth as a
whole. By setting up more trash cans of which the city would be in charge of, it would hopefully
encourage those who do frequently litter to throw away their waste properly. Besides putting up
cameras and implementing more trash cans we can also set up a plan to benefit both our homeless
citizens and the environment of our cities. The homeless give service to their city by keeping it clean
and in return they gain food and shelter. The process works by setting up trash cans in locations
where homeless tend to shelter themselves such as around freeways, the sidewalks, and within other
public places. The homeless can take the trash they find and pick up whatever other trash they see to
clean up. When the trash bags reach a certain weight, they can then take that garbage to homeless
shelter. In return, the homeless shelter allows these homeless a night or two in the shelter. The main
organizations, companies, and people we have contacted for our idea include Clean–Up Los Angeles

Encno-Tarzana Community Program Essay
Development of the Encnio–Tarzana Community Plan update involved a three year process
engaging numerous community stakeholder, advocacy and constituent groups, as well as on–going
coordination with numerous City, County and neighboring Municipal agencies. With over 8
Community outreach meetings conducted and twice that number of agency and staff coordination
meetings, outreach regarding the Encino–Tarzana Community Plan Update was both on–going and
comprehensive.
As envisioned by the Department's Executive Management in 2016, at initiation of six–year
community plan cycle, the outreach process was to involve a, "more continuous feedback loop of
public input", from previous Community Plan Update outreach efforts and toward achieving ...

Martin Bayerle Research Paper
Viewers are loving the show Billion Dollar Wreck on History. Now everyone is curious about the
fact that Martin Bayerle actually spent time in jail for manslaughter. This was years ago before the
show, but Martin's past is coming up now that he has joined a new reality show. He is the lead of the
show and Martin is trying to find treasure that he believes could be worth billions. Starcasm shared
details about Martin Bayerle's time in jail and what landed the treasure seeker behind bars over 10
years ago. Martin Bayerle was actually brought up on charges of murder, but was actually convicted
of voluntary manslaughter instead. This all went down back in 1991 when Bayerle was charged with
the murder of Stefano Robotti, Bayerle's wife's alleged lover. At the time, Martin was not with his
wife anymore, but they were not divorced yet either. This all happened after Martin tried to find
treasure the first time on the RMS Republic and only found the wine cellar. Now he is back ... Show

1991 about Martin Bayerle's trial and in a shocking twist he tried to exploit Susan Bayerle sexually.
Her lawyer testified that Martin had Susan sign a paper that said that he would give the divorce to
her, but in return he wanted "one night of unrestricted sexual pleasure." This document was signed
by Susan and said that "any reasonable, normal requests" of a sexual nature would be performed
"without restriction or reservation." History Premieres 'Billion Dollar Wreck' Tonight

City Of God Vs Goodfellas
City of God mixes with furious energy as it falls into the story of the slum gangs of Rio de Janeiro.
Spectacular and disturbing, promptly involved with its characters. City of God has been compared
with the film "GoodFellas," and holds a fair comparison due to its great story.
The movie takes place in slums constructed by the government of Rio to separate the poor people
from the city center. They have grown into places crowded with life, color, music and excitement
and also with danger, law is something that doesn't exist and violent gangs rule the streets. In the
virtuoso sequence opening the picture, a gang is holding a picnic for its members when a chicken
escapes. Among those chasing it is Rocket, the narrator of the film. A guy like ... Show more content

A note at the end says it is partly based on the life of Wilson Rodriguez, a Brazilian photographer.
We watch as Rocket obtains a stolen camera that he treasures and takes pictures from his privileged
position as a kid on the streets. He gets a job to assist on delivering newspapers, asks a photographer
to develop his film, and is frightened to see his portrait of an armed gang leader on the front page of
the paper.
The gangs are delighted by the publicity and pose as heroes for photographs with their guns and
girls. And during a major gang war, he is able to photograph the police killing a gangster, a murder
they plan to pass off as gang–related crime. These events can be seen as reality for many people in
Rio's slums.
In its actual level of violence, "City of God" is less extreme than gangs related movies but is clear
that the city is divided in two: the employed and secure, who are served by law and municipal
services, and the city of the castaways, whose alliances are born of opportunity and desperation.

INTRODUCTION
Brazil is the largest country in the South American continent, and it is amongst the 12 largest
economies of the world. It possesses vast natural resources and offers remarkable ecological
diversity, majority of its 192 million inhabitants now live in urban areas (Griffiths, A and Wall, S. p
609). The country also possesses a diversified industrial and agricultural sector and In 2001, the
contribution of the agricultural sector to GDP was 9.3%, while that for industry and services was
33.9% and 56.8% respectively (Pereira, L 2004).
At around the same time, Jim O'Neill, the head of global economic research at Goldman Sachs,
coined the acronym "BRICs" to refer to Brazil, Russia, India, and China, the emerging market ...

It was rather centred around the de–indexation of the Brazilian economy, which was accomplished
in most part by converting salaries and a number of other prices in the months preceding the
implementation of the Real Plan into 'Real Value Units' (URVs), which were then linked to the
dollar (Ferrari–Filho, F 2001). Source: www.inflation.eu
Fig. 1 Illustrates Brazil's battle with hyperinflation
These policies enabled Brazil to get monthly inflation rates down from 45% during the second
quarter of 1994 to an average of less than 1% in 1996 (Inflation.eu 2012). As a result the economy
grew by 6% percent in 1994, and by 4.2% and 2.9% in 1995 and 1996, respectively (Clements, B.
1997) as domestic demand increased fuelled by lower inflation and higher real wages. The
successful implementation of the Real Plan not only helped stabilize the economy , it also showed
real economic discipline necessary to attract the foreign capital and investment.
The combination of bringing inflation down and provoking expansion in demand in the short term
resulted in domestic savings dropping sharply to 17.9% of GDP in 1995, from 21.5%, in 1993
(Cinquetti, C 2000), this forced the government to slow the economy down by controlling domestic
credit and increasing the real's interest rate. The result of the high interest rate and capital account
liberalization was short term

Cinema In The Philippine Cinema
The Philippine cinema is a roller coaster ride of different emotions and genres that serves the
Filipino people entertainment and enjoyment. Over the past century or so, we've been filled up with
a lot different stories of characters that are relatable to the people. From the adventures of Fernando
Poe Jr.'s Ang Panday to the comedic acts of Babalu and Dolphy, we can say that the Philippine film
industry is very reputable and prestigious just like those of in the other countries. In today's
generation, personally, I think people are getting sick of movies that depict mistresses and anything
about them. I also think that one of the genres that are on the rise is the Independent films. Erik
Matti's Indie film, Honor Thy Father, brings a very different tone and story to the plate. The movie
starts off with Edgar (John Lloyd Cruz) picking up his daughter from school. The scene shifts to
their house where Kaye (Meryll Soriano), Edgar's wife, is persuading a group of friends to invest in
her father's business where everyone gets significantly rich. Edgar sits from behind, listening to how
people believe in his wife's words. The next scene shows the essential part of the story because the
movie uses religion as a device to show the irony of being projected as pure and wholesome can
hide the evilness and cruelty of a person. Edgar's family is part of this religious organization called
the Church of Yeshua but Edgar is seen staring at the money being donated by the people and

In the case of serious medical emergency, a medical evacuation is needed to transport the individual
to the closest health care facility that offers sufficient medical care, which may be located in another
country, such as Miami in the United States.
The private medical sector in Trinidad is very small comprising of four facilities which include:
St Augustine private hospital
Southern medical clinic
West shore private medical hospital
Adventist hospital
These facilities are located either in Port of Spain, San Fernando and the West Mooring area, they
are sufficient enough to treat most health problems but offer only a slightly better treatment than that
of the public health care systems. Although the private sector is considered better than the public
sector it is still incapable of handling serious illness and injuries especially those that require long
term care.
The health care system in Trinidad is not considered the best especially is seeking care at the public

Struggles of Immigrants and Native Americans
1.
The Mexican government system over the Native Americans introduced the policy of mercantilism.
In this system, merchants and the government based in Mexico partnered to make a strong political
rule over Native Americans. In the process, the colonial government backed the merchants in
exploiting the resources of the native peoples. In exchange, the government took its share in terms
of taxes and duties. The tax that the colonial government earned was used to equip the loyal navy
such that the Mexican would be safe from attacks. The army also sought to expand territories
whenever they wanted (De Montalvo 5). The significant impact of this policy was that the Native
Americans suffered under the spell of poverty as their resources were siphoned to Mexico and other
developing colonies.
The Spanish rulers, who colonized the Native Americans, implemented a policy that the colonists
found hard to follow. They wanted to create a society whereby heredity was the determinant for
ranks. When the Spanish occupied Florida, only five Spanish–born families were in the colony. As
more and more Spaniards arrived, the issue of the rank became paramount than that of the skin tone.
In the meanwhile, they forced the policy of social stratification and succeeded. They, however,
failed to connect rank with the purity of European blood, thus creating a culturally diverse society
(Muir).
Administration of the United States imposed a policy of unrewarded labor to the Native Americans.

Hispanic Immigrants In Los Angeles
According to "Immigrants in California," by Marisol Cuellar Mejia and Hans P. Johnson, California
has the most immigration than any other state, where "more than 30% of the population of seven
California counties" are foreign born. A large contributor to these statistics are Hispanic immigrants
that migrate to the United States in hope of achieving the "American Dream." Los Angeles has
become the most popular destination for these immigrants as this city alone contains 4.9 million
Hispanics, making it 9% of the nation's Hispanic population (Brown and Hugo). Although Hispanic
immigrants have settled in Los Angeles, they encounter many urban struggles as they try to adjust to
this new life style. Hispanics have settled in Los Angeles since ... Show more content on

However through urban planning and development, solutions can be discovered and put into action
to allow easier flow into urbanism. Transportation issues for example can be resolved by planning
for the future of Los Angeles and by investing in the public transportation system. An example of
this would be investing in bike paths, lanes, and routes so that people with low income, such as
Hispanic immigrants, can travel to their locations in an easier manner through biking. An investment
"to fill in gaps and complete the citywide bike plan" for this method of transportation "calls for
nearly 1,700 miles of new and upgraded paths and lanes before 2035," which can seem difficult but
possible (Laura J. Nelson). Biking as a new main method of transportation "can help reduce crashes
of all types and assist in reaching an ambitious new city goal of eliminating traffic deaths by 2025"
(Laura J. Nelson). A solution to gentrification through urban planning is to instead focus on a new
method of development called Asset Based Community Development. Through this different urban
revitalization process, an inside out approach is taken where development occurs by focusing on the
communities' assets and building upon them, unlike gentrification. When the community is
dedicated and determined to rebuild their torn down neighborhoods, it is possible to bring new life
to the neighborhood by focusing on assets such

Reflection Essay
I was born in central Los Angeles and remained there until if was five years old. Due to our growing
family and some of the concerns surrounding community violence my parents decided to move to
Van Nuys. Even within the San Fernando Valley there are areas of high community violence, gang
activity and poverty. However, I felt as sense of community support and safety due largely in part to
the *** established early on in my elementary school. Though community gatherings my mother
found a new source of social support and support networking. The ability to learn about our
neighbors and community helps to establish a sense of cohesion, trust and a real community. I
remember my mother and neighbors coming together to talk about issues within the larger
community that may have been or concern or placed children and families at risk. As I grew older
things appeared to have changed. Families moved away, businesses closed down, and again it seems
the once united community has reverted to an individualistic neighborhood. I recall being in third
grade and having a classmate sit next to me during our lunch hour. As my interest focused on
playing with friends I was always monitored to ensure I finished my lunch prior to exiting the eating
area. I quickly figured out that he was a good eater. Although I do not recall seeing him with a lunch
tray, he would come sit next to me and ask if I intended on finishing my food. I would gladly oblige
and share most of my lunch with him

Human Rights in Brazil
The population in Brazil consists of 144 million people. Brazil is one of the fastest–growing nations
in the Western Hemisphere. Its population is increasing at the rate of about 2 % a year. The

Human Activities Have Impacted Rivers Since The Birth Of...
Human activities have impacted rivers since the birth of civilization. For millennia, water from
rivers has been, used, re–used, diverted, depleted, polluted, sold, flushed, fought for, stolen, ruled,
exchanged and more. To understand what affects the quality and quantity of water for The Los
Angeles River, we must understand the water sources that charge and shape the River's watershed.
Moreover, we must also understand the Los Angeles River and its interaction with the environment.
You see, as the River moves downgradient (downhill), it interconnects with its environment, both
man–made (i.e., pavement, bridges), geologic (i.e., soil, rocks), organic (i.e., tree roots, plants),
pollutants and more. At FoLAR, we believe that understanding ... Show more content on

In other words, areas of higher elevation see a lot more rainfall than areas of lower elevation. At
higher elevations, the Los Angeles river tributaries are dominated by natural flows, which are
seasonally affected by rain and snowfall. On the lower elevations, where most of the population
lives, water to the River is supplemented by effluent and urban runoff. The latter changes the profile
of the river from a body of water that is ephemeral, to a body of water that is permanent.
Interestingly, because Los Angeles County depends heavily on imported water, water from the
Colorado River and the Eastern Sierra Nevada indirectly ends up being part of the Los Angeles
River. In the name of conquering the west, humans in the Western United States have long exerted
control of bodies of water, the Los Angeles River is yet another example. Natural water resources
for the River during rainy months flow from the following mountain ranges: Santa Susana
Mountains, the Verdugo Hills, and the Northern side of the Santa Monica Mountains. During dry
months, effluents dominate the river in the coastal plane. Recycled water is tertiary–treated effluents
that go through at least three stages of purification to remove more than 99 percent of all the
impurities to produce an effluent of almost drinking–water quality. The water reclamation plants that
provide effluent to the River

Some scholars criticise Cidade de Deus / City of God (2002) on the grounds that the film represents
violence and poverty as a 'spectacle' and fails to relate these issues to the wider socio–political

'There are...two kinds of film makers: one invents an imaginary reality; the other confronts an

Rafael Nadal Research Paper

HSE 2: Period 3

My Hero Project
"Rafael Nadal, "Rafa", is a professional tennis player who demonstrates a fascinating level of high
speed tennis against the best tennis players in the world. Nadal has already won a Career Grand
Slam, which means that he was the winner of four of the most important tennis tournaments in ATP
tour (Association of Tennis Professionals). Rafael Nadal was born in Manacor, a small city in Spain.
His uncle, Toni Nadal, has been his couch since he was four years old. When Rafa was young, he
"played soccer and tennis parallel until he won European under–12 tennis title" (Student resources
in context). From a young age, Nadal's parents were good examples of good manners for him to
follow. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to succeed in the game, Rafael Nadal consistently works on his inner values. "[Nadal] ... the
tennis player provides an example of how to cultivate values such as humility, discipline and
sacrifice so that the goal is not only to reach his highest level but to stay at one's peak without losing
perspective." (Business Lessons). Rafael Nadal is a real champion. He comes to the match with
strong self– discipline and readiness to sacrifice regardless of pain and tiredness and regardless of
how difficult and how long a match will go. When he comes to the court he is determined to one
goal, win the match! Rafael Nadal is a well–known tennis star who has a lot of fans, TV promotion,
popularity, and money. However, he is a simple man. He is a real hero because he always stays
humble, no matter how many victories he had achieved. Therefore, Nadal is considered as one of the
best examples of humbleness. Nadal is a tennis legend because he comes to every match focused to
give it his best. "Just stick to your game plan ... and never ever give up a point" (Nadal and Carlin
73). For Rafael Nadal it does not matter what opponent is on the other side of the court because he
plays first against himself. A tennis player needs to have a plan for every match in order to succeed.
By analyzing the opponent's game, a player can find out his weak sides and use them to his
advantage in order to win.

Living in Jacksonville, NC versus Living in San Diego, Ca
Compare and Contrast Final Draft
Samantha Deal As a military brat, I was born and raised in Jacksonville, North Carolina; and have
lived here for most of my life. Recently our family was stationed in San Diego, California, and the
move was a great eye–opener for me. When I moved to San Diego, I was surprised by the diversity
of cultures, the abundance of activities, and how the crowds of people never stopped. It is an
excellent place for people who enjoy being amongst other people; there is never a lack of
entertainment day or night. Jacksonville, North Carolina on the other hand, is more for people who
like a relaxed and quiet family oriented lifestyle. The city of Jacksonville, and Camp Lejeune
Marine Corps base are home to 170,000 Marines, Sailors, retirees, and civilians. There are plenty of
things to do in Jacksonville, the only problem is you have to look for them. For example, on the
Jacksonville website, there are seafood festivals to attend, crab boils, and beach events among other
things. We have deep sea fishing for blue marlin with a top prize of $1,000,000 which attracts
people from all over the country. People can join the "Clean and Green Jacksonville initiative"
which entails improving, and maintaining the parks, roadways, and landscapes. Also, the Sturgeon
City Institute is focused on bringing back the endangered Sturgeon to the New River. In addition,

Essay on Import Substitution Industrialization
Around the 1930s, Brazil and Latin American began following the process of Import Substitution
Industrialization, which lasted until the end of the 1980s. The ISI policies devaluated the currency in
order to boost exports and discourage imports, followed by adopting different exchange rates for
goods (Watkins). ISI in Brazil had an interesting effect; it created a three–prong system of
governmental, private, and foreign capital being directed at the infrastructure and heavy industry,
manufacturing goods, and the production of durable goods. The program worked at first but then
became a serious economic problem. When the 1980s came around Brazil realized that ISI policies
lead to inefficient industries because of their lack of exposure to ... Show more content on

This helped keep the inflation low and with the high interest rates, a lot of foreign capital began to
flow into the country. The government's actions in the military dictatorship made it difficult for
Brazil to attract foreign capital however; the Government under the Real Plan had a strong focus on
the balance of payments and tried to maintain a positive influx of capital into the nation by
appeasing the international public and to improve the economy (Joffe–Watt). The Real Plan helped
the economy so much that it began gaining value against the US currency, however in the late 1990s
the currency began to devaluate. For the Real Plan to keep working the currency had to appreciate
with the economy, this would assure a constant supply of foreign capital and products that
maintained the market stable.
Following the Real Plan, Brazil had a minor economic downturn but after 2002, the economy has
been increasing at a steady pace. The economy was able to grow around 4% in 2000, however the
issues in Argentina in 2001 and the uncertainty of whom the next president would be created a
confidence crisis in the economy. However in 2002 when Luis Inácio Lula da Silva (Lula) won the
election most of the issues about his presidency went thrown out because of his policies. Even

Owens Valley Summary
Kharl argues that in the case of the Sierra Nevada's Owens Valley, located approximately 250 miles
north Los Angeles, the valley's agricultural shareholders and the City of Los Angeles originally
sought an agreement that reserved sufficient water for valley residents to maintain their ranching
life–style while concurrently exporting the valley's surplus to the soon–to–be developed San
Fernando Valley. Such an agreement would allow rural users to maintain their ranches while
concurrently allowing Los Angeles to grow. In 1913, as plans for the Los Angeles Aqueduct finally
came to fruition with water flowing from the valley to the basin, years of effort ended with both
parties unable to agree to an acceptable division of those waters with the ... Show more content on

volume now flowing does not meet the amounts specified in the agreement. Under the terms of the

this will be increasingly inadequate. Absent changes in both urban and agricultural use patterns, the
deficit will only grow and further stress the state's political and economic systems. Man's mastery
will thus prove illusory and short–lived and the original problems of water supply will return in

City Of God Analysis
The Brazilian film City of God, directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund provides an insiders
look on the lives of inner–city young adults involved in organized crime as they attempt to survive
and navigate the slums in which they live. The film, loosely based on real life events, is a
commentary on the cyclical nature of violence in the titular City of God, a slum located in Rio de
Janeiro. The film chooses to document the rise and fall of crime in Rio de Janeiro that took place
from the 1960s to the 1980s and the lives of inner–city kids involved in it. It toys with themes of
cyclical and inescapable violence; suffocation; and the inexorable nature of poverty and
involvement in a life of organized crime and gang activities through the employment of several
editing techniques throughout the length of the film such as split frame simultaneous shots, quick
and violent cuts, and POV shots. Notably, these techniques are primarily used when shooting
Rocket, the main character of the film and a member of the favela. Rocket's place in the story is the
main vessel for pushing these themes in the story as the film chooses to focus on his emotions
regarding the favela. Overall these editing techniques work to provide the representation of the
favela as suffocating and small; a representation that is tied intrinsically with themes of poverty and
the certainty of violence.
Throughout the length of the film the viewers watch as the plot seemingly goes in circles, helpless to

Fernando Botero is an internationally acclaimed figurative artist and sculptor. He is one of the most
traded and recognized artists from Latin America. His art is exhibited in international museums
worldwide and follows an art–style he spent years to perfect. Fernando Botero's success began in
Columbia; he then moved Barcelona, Madrid and finally Paris where he now spends most of his
time. Botero's beginner art was frequently criticized for "lacking its own identity" as it was
influenced by the works of various renowned artists such as Diego Rivera, Pablo Picasso, Francisco

Effects Of Sylmar Earthquake On San Fernando Valley
One of the most significant earthquakes to hit the San Fernando Valley in the past was the 1971 San
Fernando/ Sylmar earthquake. On February 9, 1971 at about 6 o'clock the cities of San Fernando
and Sylmar experienced an earthquake that ruptured along the Sierra Madre Fault Zone (Oakeshott,
Gordon B). The epicenter of this earthquake was reported to be in the San Gabriel Valley Mountains
above the valley. The citizens of both cities felt tremendous shaking. The magnitude of the
earthquake was measured as a 6.6 on the Richter scale and the shaking had the intensity of a level 11
(extreme) on the Modified Mercalli system (U.S. Geological Survey). The shaking of this 6.6
magnitude earthquake lasted about 12 seconds with a very strong ground motion. The source of this
faulting was located about five miles to the north of the San Fernando valley. The surface faulting of
this earthquake was reported to be seen along the surface of the San Fernando fault zone from a
point south of Sylmar, the faulting stretched 6 miles more as far as east to the little Tujunga Canyon,
also more surface faulting was reported more east as well. In total the maximum surface rupture was
12 miles and the amount of slip was about 6 feet (U.S. Geological Survey). The type of fault

Effects of Scandal on Brazil and Investors The Petrobras scandal has definitely put Brazil back to
square one. The country has seen tremendous growth over the last two decades; however, this
scandal is occurring during a pivotal part during Olympic season. Petrobras is highly indebted,
meaning it owes a large amount of money to pay back a monetary loan. Oil companies take on large
amounts of debt, and Petrobras carries a large amount of it. In June 2014, investors faced trouble
because of two scenarios on an asset write off. During the scandal, Petrobras was carrying assets
with higher values than they deserve because of fraud. The first scenario is a 1% write off, and the
worst case scenario is a 5% write–off. A 1% write off will cause a 19% reduction in net income for
2014, whereas a 5% write–off decreases net income by 95% The short term effect of the scandal is
that it puts pressure on a weak government that has weak economic growth, whereas the long term
effect is extensive repair on the relationships of private sector companies and

some of their older models, they truly were doing their own thing. "But that was what Ferrari was

The name may not sound familiar, but Sebastian Vettel is the best Formula One driver thats driving

Coincidently, Formula One racing is a lot like NASCAR except the cars look different. Now, it is a
popular sport around the world but not as popular here in America and that's why a lot of people
here don't know a lot about this fast paced sport. In the last three years, Sebastian has won four

various titles such as the Junior Monaco Kart Cup in 2001. After he competed in the Formula

as violence, intensity, and aggression become more of a habit. It has been proven in studies that
associating with delinquent friends increases the likelihood of delinquent behaviors (Cullen, Agnew,
2011, p. 120). This explains how the children picked up on the delinquent behaviors. They learned
them through watching others. We see this theory in the younger kids that soon start to take after the
actions of Li'l Ze and his gang. Elijah Anderson explains the subculture of violence that is further
developed in the cities slumps as the "code of the street". Anderson argues that the code pressures
young males (majority of the time) in the inner city to respond to any display of disrespect with
violence (Anderson, 1994, p. 143). The core of Anderson's code focuses on the issue of respect– it is
viewed as hard–won but easily lost (Anderson, 1994, p. 145). In the City of God we know that
respect is greatly admired. For example, Li'l Ze gained a lot respect by eliminating other gangs that
competed with his business. He put fear in the eyes of anyone that crossed his path. He proved he
was not scarred and earned his respect through violence. Anderson says individuals that fall under

Analysis Of The Hood Film: City Of God
The film City of God portrays the life of the youth living in one Brazil's most dangerous favela's

genre isn't limited to America films only. According to Paula J. Massood's Black City Cinema the
genre is defined by urban visual and aural iconography, which is often engaged in dialogue with its
immediate socioeconomic, political and industrial contexts. Those contexts aren't solely American,
but as City of God presents they're Brazilian too. Hood films can be identified by several major
aspects and themes that are classically represented in City of God such as street gangs and violent
gang activity, drug use and trafficking, poverty, the problems faced by young men coming of age in
the hood and issues of

Personal Narrative Essay: A Trip To The Red Line
My mom always told me she felt comfortable in her dented–but–charming 2011 black Toyota
Camry. I've never bought into the notion that a car could be a sanctuary, but she thinks of her car as
a second home. She grew up in the San Fernando Valley of the 1980s, a mall–centric autotopia, so it
makes sense. But, at twenty years old, it's not the sort of mentality that I've grown to share.
As a self–identified and certifiable marketable member of the Millennial generation, I've come of
age during a time of political, social, economic, and environmental turmoil. Like many of my peers,
I maintain a stubborn idealism many of us will fight to the last 5–10 characters to explain. And if
there was ever a time and place for stubborn idealism, it certainly ... Show more content on

I want to get from Westwood to visit my family in the Valley without having to take the 720 bus to
the Purple Line and then transferring to the Red Line. The new Expo Line extension takes us all the
way to Santa Monica, and what an amazing improvement that has been in getting people to a city
that offers free Thursday concerts on its pier and plentiful beach access. But major rail expansions
shouldn't stop in Santa Monica. We should be able to get from the Valley to the West Side by train.
We should be able to get to LAX without having to worry about who will drive us there or whether
the Flyaway bus will end up sitting in traffic for an hour.
With Measure M up for vote this November, I very clearly see a future with greater mobility for all
Angelenos. Voting for better transit connectivity in Los Angeles, along with improving affordable
housing options surrounding major transit arterials, are necessities not only for the future of Los
Angeles but also most cities in this country. Los Angeles public transit is getting better and will
continue to improve. The shared sentiment of just about everyone I talk to about public transit in LA
is that while it isn't quite there –– we sure do want it to be and we'll do what it takes to make it

Essay On Marco Valenzuela
Sports are a form of unity all over the world. It doesn't matter what sport you play or watch but
when rooting for or against a team most always have that jaw dropping, heart skipping sensation
wishing for a team to win or sometimes even loose. Growing up in a Hispanic family sports play a
big part of my families life, more predominantly on Sundays. The whole family gets together for
carne asadas to watch soccer, football, baseball, golf, any type of sport playing at that moment on
TV and we all bet each other to see who will win. The best feeling for me is when a Latino or Latina
play a sport because it gives me so much pride knowing that someone from my country is
representing the country I live in now but they have a similar root behind ... Show more content on

Best known for his amazing time playing with the LA Dodgers Fernando has also brought so much
joy to the Mexican and Mexican American community. Being a Ethcohuaquila Mexico native
Valenzuela came to America to play for the Dodgers as a teenager not knowing an ounce of English.
During his games he had a personal Spanish broadcaster translator that would help him. Later on he
mastered the language but this brings so much joy to the Latino fan base because it shows that
someone form Mexico who came from nothing to the United States made it big. Later on Valenzuela
became a US Citizen and was proud to announce that to everyone because it is very hard even today
that a Mexican get citizen ship into the US so fast. Although, Valenzuela was very proud to be a
Mexican, before ad after games he was known to talk to the Latino Television broadcasters before
the American ones. His manager Mike Scioscia said "I think the pride he has for the opportunity he
had to play major league baseball and for everything he's established here in the U.S. is important to
him," Scioscia said, "but it will never replace the pride he has for his native country of Mexico."
(NY Times) The fan base for MLB Hispanic baseball players is already a very large one so,
Valenzuela is just one of the many great MLB baseball players that have shown their Latino pride
and have given the sport lots of

Cultural Diversity in My Neighborhood

  • 1. Cultural Reflection As i strolled down my neighborhood coming from the gym, I observed my environment and was able to notice things i never commonly do, the more i walked the more i was able to smell the spices and scents that made home smell like home. Some scents smelled so familiar like my own home and mother's cooking and others unique, as a matter of fact i was able to feel the warmth from each house like a cozy blanket welcoming me in. I listened and was able to hear the laughter and joy of family dinners, movie nights, their own unique ways of bonding which embraced the fact that my community had a diversity of people who had their own way of carrying their roots. Yes, indeed they had their own ways of bonding which are different yet so similar. I concluded that many teens who grew up in their community are introduced to their culture but accumulate the traits of their environment which makes them question who or what they really are. In addition it is what shapes up our lives as we grow. How different our cultures are but yet so alike in the community. We unionize what we observe and inherit from other people and their cultures so in the end we are a mix up cultures and is what makes us diverse to modernize our culture. My parents Notably as i grew older is when i started to understand ethnicity, race and culture which caused a lot of unanswered questions. I wasn't so sure what i was because i loved a lot of things from different cultures, different to what i was introduced to. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Pollution In Los Angeles Pollution and trash build up in Los Angeles has been accumulating and worsening for many years. The homeless population in Los Angeles also has been at an all time high. In areas like Van Nuys, Reseda, Downtown, and many more, there needs to be more trash cans near homeless encampments and along with those, cameras, which will document and hopefully successfully pinpoint potential littering suspects. The trash is not only harmful and damaging to our community but also Earth as a whole. By setting up more trash cans of which the city would be in charge of, it would hopefully encourage those who do frequently litter to throw away their waste properly. Besides putting up cameras and implementing more trash cans we can also set up a plan to benefit both our homeless citizens and the environment of our cities. The homeless give service to their city by keeping it clean and in return they gain food and shelter. The process works by setting up trash cans in locations where homeless tend to shelter themselves such as around freeways, the sidewalks, and within other public places. The homeless can take the trash they find and pick up whatever other trash they see to clean up. When the trash bags reach a certain weight, they can then take that garbage to homeless shelter. In return, the homeless shelter allows these homeless a night or two in the shelter. The main organizations, companies, and people we have contacted for our idea include Clean–Up Los Angeles City / County ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Now everyone is curious about the fact that Martin Bayerle actually spent time in jail for manslaughter. This was years ago before the show, but Martin's past is coming up now that he has joined a new reality show. He is the lead of the show and Martin is trying to find treasure that he believes could be worth billions. Starcasm shared details about Martin Bayerle's time in jail and what landed the treasure seeker behind bars over 10 years ago. Martin Bayerle was actually brought up on charges of murder, but was actually convicted of voluntary manslaughter instead. This all went down back in 1991 when Bayerle was charged with the murder of Stefano Robotti, Bayerle's wife's alleged lover. At the time, Martin was not with his wife anymore, but they were not divorced yet either. This all happened after Martin tried to find treasure the first time on the RMS Republic and only found the wine cellar. Now he is back ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 17. City Of God Vs Goodfellas City of God mixes with furious energy as it falls into the story of the slum gangs of Rio de Janeiro. Spectacular and disturbing, promptly involved with its characters. City of God has been compared with the film "GoodFellas," and holds a fair comparison due to its great story. The movie takes place in slums constructed by the government of Rio to separate the poor people from the city center. They have grown into places crowded with life, color, music and excitement and also with danger, law is something that doesn't exist and violent gangs rule the streets. In the virtuoso sequence opening the picture, a gang is holding a picnic for its members when a chicken escapes. Among those chasing it is Rocket, the narrator of the film. A guy like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A note at the end says it is partly based on the life of Wilson Rodriguez, a Brazilian photographer. We watch as Rocket obtains a stolen camera that he treasures and takes pictures from his privileged position as a kid on the streets. He gets a job to assist on delivering newspapers, asks a photographer to develop his film, and is frightened to see his portrait of an armed gang leader on the front page of the paper. The gangs are delighted by the publicity and pose as heroes for photographs with their guns and girls. And during a major gang war, he is able to photograph the police killing a gangster, a murder they plan to pass off as gang–related crime. These events can be seen as reality for many people in Rio's slums. In its actual level of violence, "City of God" is less extreme than gangs related movies but is clear that the city is divided in two: the employed and secure, who are served by law and municipal services, and the city of the castaways, whose alliances are born of opportunity and desperation. It possesses vast natural resources and offers remarkable ecological diversity, majority of its 192 million inhabitants now live in urban areas (Griffiths, A and Wall, S. p 609). The country also possesses a diversified industrial and agricultural sector and In 2001, the contribution of the agricultural sector to GDP was 9.3%, while that for industry and services was 33.9% and 56.8% respectively (Pereira, L 2004). It was rather centred around the de–indexation of the Brazilian economy, which was accomplished in most part by converting salaries and a number of other prices in the months preceding the implementation of the Real Plan into 'Real Value Units' (URVs), which were then linked to the dollar (Ferrari–Filho, F 2001). Source: www.inflation.eu Fig. 1 Illustrates Brazil's battle with hyperinflation These policies enabled Brazil to get monthly inflation rates down from 45% during the second quarter of 1994 to an average of less than 1% in 1996 (Inflation.eu 2012). As a result the economy grew by 6% percent in 1994, and by 4.2% and 2.9% in 1995 and 1996, respectively (Clements, B. 1997) as domestic demand increased fuelled by lower inflation and higher real wages. The successful implementation of the Real Plan not only helped stabilize the economy , it also showed real economic discipline necessary to attract the foreign capital and investment. The combination of bringing inflation down and provoking expansion in demand in the short term resulted in domestic savings dropping sharply to 17.9% of GDP in 1995, from 21.5%, in 1993 (Cinquetti, C 2000), this forced the government to slow the economy down by controlling domestic credit and increasing the real's interest rate. Over the past century or so, we've been filled up with a lot different stories of characters that are relatable to the people. From the adventures of Fernando Poe Jr.'s Ang Panday to the comedic acts of Babalu and Dolphy, we can say that the Philippine film industry is very reputable and prestigious just like those of in the other countries. In today's generation, personally, I think people are getting sick of movies that depict mistresses and anything about them. I also think that one of the genres that are on the rise is the Independent films. Erik Matti's Indie film, Honor Thy Father, brings a very different tone and story to the plate. The movie starts off with Edgar (John Lloyd Cruz) picking up his daughter from school. The scene shifts to their house where Kaye (Meryll Soriano), Edgar's wife, is persuading a group of friends to invest in her father's business where everyone gets significantly rich. Edgar sits from behind, listening to how people believe in his wife's words. The next scene shows the essential part of the story because the movie uses religion as a device to show the irony of being projected as pure and wholesome can hide the evilness and cruelty of a person. Edgar's family is part of this religious organization called the Church of Yeshua but Edgar is seen staring at the money being donated by the people and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Struggles of Immigrants and Native Americans 1. The Mexican government system over the Native Americans introduced the policy of mercantilism. In this system, merchants and the government based in Mexico partnered to make a strong political rule over Native Americans. In the process, the colonial government backed the merchants in exploiting the resources of the native peoples. In exchange, the government took its share in terms of taxes and duties. The tax that the colonial government earned was used to equip the loyal navy such that the Mexican would be safe from attacks. The army also sought to expand territories whenever they wanted (De Montalvo 5). The significant impact of this policy was that the Native Americans suffered under the spell of poverty as their resources were siphoned to Mexico and other developing colonies. The Spanish rulers, who colonized the Native Americans, implemented a policy that the colonists found hard to follow. They wanted to create a society whereby heredity was the determinant for ranks. When the Spanish occupied Florida, only five Spanish–born families were in the colony. As more and more Spaniards arrived, the issue of the rank became paramount than that of the skin tone. In the meanwhile, they forced the policy of social stratification and succeeded. They, however, failed to connect rank with the purity of European blood, thus creating a culturally diverse society (Muir). Administration of the United States imposed a policy of unrewarded labor to the Native Americans. Each Native ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Hispanic Immigrants In Los Angeles According to "Immigrants in California," by Marisol Cuellar Mejia and Hans P. Johnson, California has the most immigration than any other state, where "more than 30% of the population of seven California counties" are foreign born. A large contributor to these statistics are Hispanic immigrants that migrate to the United States in hope of achieving the "American Dream." Los Angeles has become the most popular destination for these immigrants as this city alone contains 4.9 million Hispanics, making it 9% of the nation's Hispanic population (Brown and Hugo). Although Hispanic immigrants have settled in Los Angeles, they encounter many urban struggles as they try to adjust to this new life style. Hispanics have settled in Los Angeles since ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However through urban planning and development, solutions can be discovered and put into action to allow easier flow into urbanism. Transportation issues for example can be resolved by planning for the future of Los Angeles and by investing in the public transportation system. An example of this would be investing in bike paths, lanes, and routes so that people with low income, such as Hispanic immigrants, can travel to their locations in an easier manner through biking. An investment "to fill in gaps and complete the citywide bike plan" for this method of transportation "calls for nearly 1,700 miles of new and upgraded paths and lanes before 2035," which can seem difficult but possible (Laura J. Nelson). Biking as a new main method of transportation "can help reduce crashes of all types and assist in reaching an ambitious new city goal of eliminating traffic deaths by 2025" (Laura J. Nelson). A solution to gentrification through urban planning is to instead focus on a new method of development called Asset Based Community Development. Through this different urban revitalization process, an inside out approach is taken where development occurs by focusing on the communities' assets and building upon them, unlike gentrification. When the community is dedicated and determined to rebuild their torn down neighborhoods, it is possible to bring new life to the neighborhood by focusing on assets such ... Due to our growing family and some of the concerns surrounding community violence my parents decided to move to Van Nuys. Even within the San Fernando Valley there are areas of high community violence, gang activity and poverty. However, I felt as sense of community support and safety due largely in part to the *** established early on in my elementary school. Though community gatherings my mother found a new source of social support and support networking. The ability to learn about our neighbors and community helps to establish a sense of cohesion, trust and a real community. I remember my mother and neighbors coming together to talk about issues within the larger community that may have been or concern or placed children and families at risk. As I grew older things appeared to have changed. Families moved away, businesses closed down, and again it seems the once united community has reverted to an individualistic neighborhood. I recall being in third grade and having a classmate sit next to me during our lunch hour. As my interest focused on playing with friends I was always monitored to ensure I finished my lunch prior to exiting the eating area. I quickly figured out that he was a good eater. Although I do not recall seeing him with a lunch tray, he would come sit next to me and ask if I intended on finishing my food. I would gladly oblige and share most of my lunch with him ... For millennia, water from rivers has been, used, re–used, diverted, depleted, polluted, sold, flushed, fought for, stolen, ruled, exchanged and more. To understand what affects the quality and quantity of water for The Los Angeles River, we must understand the water sources that charge and shape the River's watershed. Moreover, we must also understand the Los Angeles River and its interaction with the environment. You see, as the River moves downgradient (downhill), it interconnects with its environment, both man–made (i.e., pavement, bridges), geologic (i.e., soil, rocks), organic (i.e., tree roots, plants), pollutants and more. At FoLAR, we believe that understanding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In other words, areas of higher elevation see a lot more rainfall than areas of lower elevation. At higher elevations, the Los Angeles river tributaries are dominated by natural flows, which are seasonally affected by rain and snowfall. On the lower elevations, where most of the population lives, water to the River is supplemented by effluent and urban runoff. The latter changes the profile of the river from a body of water that is ephemeral, to a body of water that is permanent. Interestingly, because Los Angeles County depends heavily on imported water, water from the Colorado River and the Eastern Sierra Nevada indirectly ends up being part of the Los Angeles River. In the name of conquering the west, humans in the Western United States have long exerted control of bodies of water, the Los Angeles River is yet another example. Natural water resources for the River during rainy months flow from the following mountain ranges: Santa Susana Mountains, the Verdugo Hills, and the Northern side of the Santa Monica Mountains. During dry months, effluents dominate the river in the coastal plane. Recycled water is tertiary–treated effluents that go through at least three stages of purification to remove more than 99 percent of all the impurities to produce an effluent of almost drinking–water quality. Owens Valley Summary Kharl argues that in the case of the Sierra Nevada's Owens Valley, located approximately 250 miles north Los Angeles, the valley's agricultural shareholders and the City of Los Angeles originally sought an agreement that reserved sufficient water for valley residents to maintain their ranching life–style while concurrently exporting the valley's surplus to the soon–to–be developed San Fernando Valley. Such an agreement would allow rural users to maintain their ranches while concurrently allowing Los Angeles to grow. In 1913, as plans for the Los Angeles Aqueduct finally came to fruition with water flowing from the valley to the basin, years of effort ended with both parties unable to agree to an acceptable division of those waters with the ... It is an unfortunate reality that the terms of the Colorado Compact, the document dividing the Colorado's waters, is an unworkable document. Based on allotments formulated in an "especially wet year," the average volume now flowing does not meet the amounts specified in the agreement. Under the terms of the document, California receives the largest share, but with Southern California's exploding population, this will be increasingly inadequate. Absent changes in both urban and agricultural use patterns, the deficit will only grow and further stress the state's political and economic systems. • 105. City Of God Analysis The Brazilian film City of God, directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund provides an insiders look on the lives of inner–city young adults involved in organized crime as they attempt to survive and navigate the slums in which they live. The film, loosely based on real life events, is a commentary on the cyclical nature of violence in the titular City of God, a slum located in Rio de Janeiro. The film chooses to document the rise and fall of crime in Rio de Janeiro that took place from the 1960s to the 1980s and the lives of inner–city kids involved in it. It toys with themes of cyclical and inescapable violence; suffocation; and the inexorable nature of poverty and involvement in a life of organized crime and gang activities through the employment of several editing techniques throughout the length of the film such as split frame simultaneous shots, quick and violent cuts, and POV shots. Notably, these techniques are primarily used when shooting Rocket, the main character of the film and a member of the favela. Rocket's place in the story is the main vessel for pushing these themes in the story as the film chooses to focus on his emotions regarding the favela. Overall these editing techniques work to provide the representation of the favela as suffocating and small; a representation that is tied intrinsically with themes of poverty and the certainty of violence. Throughout the length of the film the viewers watch as the plot seemingly goes in circles, helpless to end ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

His art is exhibited in international museums worldwide and follows an art–style he spent years to perfect. Fernando Botero's success began in Columbia; he then moved Barcelona, Madrid and finally Paris where he now spends most of his time. Botero's beginner art was frequently criticized for "lacking its own identity" as it was influenced by the works of various renowned artists such as Diego Rivera, Pablo Picasso, Francisco Goya and Diego Velasquez. Through such interactions we learn how to engage in criminal activity, and other qualities such as violence, intensity, and aggression become more of a habit. It has been proven in studies that associating with delinquent friends increases the likelihood of delinquent behaviors (Cullen, Agnew, 2011, p. 120). This explains how the children picked up on the delinquent behaviors. They learned them through watching others. We see this theory in the younger kids that soon start to take after the actions of Li'l Ze and his gang. Elijah Anderson explains the subculture of violence that is further developed in the cities slumps as the "code of the street". Anderson argues that the code pressures young males (majority of the time) in the inner city to respond to any display of disrespect with violence (Anderson, 1994, p. 143). The core of Anderson's code focuses on the issue of respect– it is viewed as hard–won but easily lost (Anderson, 1994, p. 145). In the City of God we know that respect is greatly admired. For example, Li'l Ze gained a lot respect by eliminating other gangs that competed with his business. He put fear in the eyes of anyone that crossed his path. He proved he was not scarred and earned his respect through violence. Anderson says individuals that fall under the hex of the code feel they have to act tough and in doing so ...
