The Origin Of Nonverbal Communication
Whether you realize it or not, almost all of what you say doesn 't come out of your mouth. In 1967, the Journal of Consulting Psychology published a
study conducted by two researchers, UCLA professor Albert Mehrabian and Susan R. Ferris, that concluded that 93% of communication is considered
nonverbal. Nonverbal communication can be anything from tone of voice, body language, and anything that doesn 't come out of your mouth basically.
Nonverbal communication varies across cultures and sexes and is an essential part of our world. Knowing the facts about how we communicate and the
way we react to communication is important to increase trust, clarity, and add interest to your presentation and appearance. Learning how to become
sensitive to body language and nonverbal cues will help you become better at portraying your intention.
Origins
The origin of nonverbal communication in our world is not quite easy to point out. On http://www.study–body–language.com they point out two main
reasons as to why this is. One is the belief that body language evolved over time to help fill human social needs such as finding food, needing shelter,
or gathering together. Another is that there are so many different categories of nonverbal communication. They can be divided up like traits that are
universal and we are born with or traits that we learn to use through our age and knowledge. We do have roots of the types of communication we use
such as our culture, personal habits, education and

Nonverbal Communication
Part A
Ten nonverbal communication techniques to make a positive impression in a job interview are mentioned below:
1.Eye contact: It plays a major role in nonverbal communication. Eye contact should be personable. Eye contact should be made only for a few
seconds at time. It shouldn't be a stare as it is natural to look away for a few seconds. If a person is not maintaining proper eye contact, it shows that the
interviewee is not interested or is distracted by other things. Lack of proper eye contact might lower your chances of getting selected.
We choose this technique because good eye contact shows confidence, clarity and respect, as well as interest in what the interviewer is saying.
2.Handshake: It is a great nonverbal cue. It should be firm but not sticky or wimpy or crushing. It should portray confidence and professionalism. It's
always great to wash and dry hands before going for an interview. It needs to be mastered because handshake becomes first impression of the person.
We choose this nonverbal cue because it shows that the interviewee is a professional person and is being formal.
3.Good posture: Person needs to sit straight while leaning forward a bit occasionally is acceptable as it shows interest and engagement in the
conversation. But leaning back and slouching is not at all acceptable. A good posture is important because it conveys to the interviewer that you are
serious and ready to answer all the questions.
We choose this nonverbal cue because

Nonverbal Expectations
Choosing to break nonverbal expectations when interacting with others was very challenging. Although I thought both options were interesting, I
chose Option #1. I chose this option because working on communication is a skill that is a must for the career field I am pursing and I will benefit
from it on a daily basis. Communicating with others is my weakness and something I am working to become successful in. When choosing this option
I knew I was putting myself in a very uncomfortable position and possibly setting myself up for failure. Forcing myself out of my comfort zone helps
boost my self–confidence and ended up being somewhat entertaining. Below are a few things I did to break nonverbal expectations when interacting
with others.
Celebrating St. Patrick's Day and pinching a complete stranger who was not wearing green!
Helping myself to a friend's favorite drink!

Speaking loud in a conversation.

The observations that were made fit statements in the textbook regarding nonverbal communication such as the importance of nonverbal skills. It is
important to know them so you can read and respond to others nonverbal behavior. Nonverbal communication can easily be taken the wrong way. Each
culture is different, what one gesture may mean in a culture can have a totally different meaning in another. My feelings and observations in my
culture tell me in my culture we seek distance and personal space. When our personal space is invaded we may feel threatened or uncomfortable. I
have also observed that eye contact is a way to show that you are engaged in what is being said, it shows a sign of respect as well. Sharing a simple
smile is a kind gesture and speaks a thousand words without any verbal

Non–verbal Communication
Introduction Communication is an important aspect in the society. It plays a major role in our day to day activities, relationships, cultural interactions
and helps in every day conversations. Communication is the simple process of transferring information from the sender to the receiver. Communication
is grouped into different categories; verbal communication which involves words and speech, written communication, visual communication and
non–verbal communication (Knapp, Hall, Horgan, Knapp, Mark, Hall, Judith, Horgan, Terrence, 2014, p.67). The sender and the receiver play a vital
role in communication and both parties have distinct ways of communicating ranging from eye ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In most instances, they are used in hand in hand with the verbal message. While the verbal message may state a point, a repeat of the same message
using non–verbal aspect affirms the point. An example is when giving direction while pointing the direction.
Accent verbal message. Non–verbal communication can be used to stress and accent a message. A change of tone is a non–verbal cue and in most in
stances a variation of tone stresses on specific point.
Complement and supplement verbal message. In most instances, non–verbal message may complement and reinforce the message and some cases
contradict the verbal message. In the American culture, a nod reinforces while a wink contradicts the message.
Regulates conversations. It is through the non–verbal cues that the other person knows when to speak and when to let the other party speak.
Act as substitute. In some instances, nonverbal messages can substitute verbal messages. An example is the use of gestures in a situation where there is
too much noise or interruptions.
Turn taking
Non verbal cues gives signals of when the other party can join in to the conversation. Through the gestures and alteration of tones, it makes it possible
for the receiver and the sender to alternate roles during a conversation.

Nonverbal Communication And Nonverbal Behavior
Research Paper 1 – Nonverbal Communication "Nonverbal communication includes all aspects of communication other than words" (Wood, 2013).
Nonverbal Communication –– Indispensable Compliment of Oral and Written Communication Dinica's article in Procedia, Social and Behavioral
Sciences from 2014 researched how nonverbal behavior aids communication by observing how animals communicate, since humans are the only
species to use language as their main form of communication. While there were some similarities between animal's and human's nonverbal behaviors,
they discovered that thanks to language, humans have adapted to using their words to communicate information more and pick up on less nonverbal
cues. Animal communication was limited based on their body features and the range of ways they could use their bodies to communicate different
things. It talks about how children learn nonverbal communication first and learn to pick up on cues as a young kid until they become old enough to use
full sentences. This makes it so many of the nonverbal cues are learned at a young age from children watching their parents communicate. It is believed
that women have a better ability at perceiving nonverbal cues since they are often the ones communicating with young children. The article then goes
on to discuss different areas of nonverbal communication.
The first area is body language. Similar to class it mentions how facial expressions are great for communicating emotions and posture can

JOB INTERVIEW
These are ten non–verbal communicators that say a lot about your person and/or develop positive/negative first impressions. First impressions cannot
be taken back so it is important to make a good one the first time around. These are some tips you can use to make sure your interview ready and to
make sure you give off a good first impression
Clothing – The way you dress says a lot about your character, this is why people say "dress for success". If you are nicely put together in formal
clothing the interviewer is more likely to have a positive impression and take you more seriously. If someone is dressed unsavory the more likely they
are to give off negative nonverbal communication.
Facial expressions – Make sure your facial expressions match the type of outcome you want to receive. If you look unimpressed or look like you
don't want to be there, your facial expressions will show this. Try to look positive, optimistic, and like your wanting to be there. This could be as
simple as looking at the employer with a slight smile. Try not to show any negative non–verbals, even if the next question they ask you throws you off
guard.
Gestures – Gestures like nodding or agreeing ques will signal to the employer that you are actively involved in the conversation and following along.
This is important because you want to show that you are listening to what the employer has to say. However, showing too many hand gestures and
body gestures while

Nonverbal Communication Techniques for Acing Interviews
Personal Hygiene
Shower, brush your teeth, comb/style your hair, use deodorant, and avoid using excess cologne or perfume.
You want to be properly groomed in order to make a positive first impression and show the interviewer you're serious about the job. Many people are
sensitive or allergic to specific or strong scents, and not using excessive amounts of cologne or perfume demonstrates that you are aware of this.
Dress Professionally
Research the company's dress code so you can dress appropriately. If you can't find anything about a dress code (or if the company doesn't have one),
use your best judgement to determine what might be appropriate attire for the company.
How you dress says a lot about how serious you are about an interview. It's important to dress for the job you want; if your goal is to work in an office
or business environment, wearing street clothes will not help you achieve that goal.
It's important to remember that professional attire for an interview at a retail chain like Walmart or Canadian Tire would look different from one at a
bank or insurance company.
Handshaking Etiquette
Prior to the interview, keep your hands open in order to prevent them becoming overly sweaty. Keep a tissue in your pocket to discreetly dry your
hands if necessary. Sweaty hands could indicate to the interviewer that you are nervous.
Offer a greeting before and during the handshake. The

Introduction
When most of us think about communication, many of us immediately imagine ourselves talking to someone or writing them a message. Most of us do
not actively think about the equally or more likely, much more important nonverbal cues that are very much a part of how people perceive our chosen
messages. The main types of nonverbal communication cues that I focused on while I was observing my subjects were:
Kinesics, the gestures we make or how we move about when we are communicating.
Haptics, the way we interpret things physically.

He had a newspaper folded neatly in front of him.
The woman, her mostly gray blonde hair freshly styled and worm to just below her shoulders, wore a blue medium–heavy summer jacket with a very
colorful scarf wrapped around her neck. Her pants were comfortable looking jeans, and her shoes were almost new looking black flat walking shoes.
She only had a cup of tea in front of her with two bags, which she dipped up and down constantly until she pulled them out and began drinking. They
both wore wedding bands on their ring fingers. I would imagine them both to be in their late sixties to early seventies.
Relationship These two people were obviously, to me, man and wife, as they leaned toward each other and kissed on a couple of occasions during
my time observing them. In the first few minutes, I noticed that the woman would sometimes reach her hand out and rest it on the man's forearm,
smiling at him and gently patting and caressing his forearm as she did but would also appear as though she wasn't really paying much attention to
what he was saying a lot of the time. The man would constantly smile and once even took his wife's hands in his to gently kiss them before letting
them go. He would also talk, at great length, about something I can only imagine was possibly boring or had been talked about before in the
relationship. The constant eye contact while talking and occasional touching and kissing lead me to the conclusion that these were two people

The Importance Of Nonverbal Communication
1.Nonverbal rules that govern our nonverbal behavior. North Americans speak in higher volumes without lengthy pauses in their speech
(paralinguistic) People tend to stand far apart and have minimum physical contact while having a conversation, depending on a relationship
(noncontact culture) People tend to smile very often, depending on scenario (facial expression) It is very common to wear a hat everywhere and
dress casually for most occasions (physical appearance) Eye contact is used to make sure that the message was understood or to show that you are
paying attention (eye contact) Monochromic concept of time, punctuality is highly valued (time orientation) Silence is considered a negative
behavior (silence) 2.a) Last Saturday, I went to a car dealership to see the kinds of deals available. I used silence and lengthy pauses to see what
kind of reaction I would get out of the salesman. b) In most of my previous experiences, the salesman would be very talkative and ask lots of
personal questions to continue a conversation throughout the showing of a vehicle. At times, I felt uncomfortable because I could see how this person
had a hard time figuring out whether I liked anything that he was trying to sell to me. It seemed like I was gaining a reputation of a difficult customer.
c) This awkward silence made the salesman very uncomfortable; he gave out more information than other salesman did on any previous occasion. It

Nonverbal Communication
The typical teacher in a classroom environment is immensely active; The teacher is likely in continual verbal contact with students: answering
questions, asking students questions, presenting material, etc. The teacher also communicates mood and feeling as well as certain meanings through a
steady stream of physical activity; a teacher leans forward, taps, points, waves his hand, turns, smiles, frowns. This non verbal activity can be divided
into four categories: conducting, acting, wielding and personal, and increased effectiveness in these categories can produce a enriching education
process for students when complemented with verbal aspects of a classroom, even for students who have learning or mental disabilities, specifically
students with down syndrome. It is easy to observe that a teacher's nonverbal communication skills are a basic and important component of teaching
much like verbal communication, and varying effectiveness can help or hinder a student's success.
To begin with, it is important to know the four categories that a teacher's nonverbal communication can be put in: conducting, acting, wielding and
personal. First off, in conducting, a teacher uses physical motion to direct classroom involvement; a teacher attempts to "control student participation
and obtain attentive behaviour"(Hennings 43). In controlling student participation a teacher draws attention to "materials, objects, persons,or even
symbolic representations"(Hennings 43). A teacher will gesture

Examples Of Nonverbal Communication
Chapter 7 is about nonverbal communication message of Looking Out Looking In question asks to name three different types of nonverbal
communication and give a real life example of each, then show which nonverbal function it serves and discuss the level of ambiguity that is present
with each. Three types of nonverbal communication are gestures, touch, and time. The first nonverbal communication pattern listed is gestures, gestures
are the movements of hands and arms. Gestures were one of the first forms of human communication. The most used gestures are called illustrators
which accompany speech but don't stand on their own. The second most common type of gestures are called emblems which are nonverbal behaviors
that have a specific ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A real life example of touch is one time I was having a deep conversation with my mentor and he new I was having a hard time and he touched my
shoulder when he was talking with me and it was just a level of comfort and care that filled my body to know that everything will be okay and I am
cared for, so in this aspect touch was used correctly. Touch has the nonverbal function of complementing, touch complements the message and emotions
relating to the message. The level of ambiguity for touch is pretty low, I believe that the touch being used is easy to determine what is being put forth,
by the amount of pressure used, where the touch was and in what context.
The third nonverbal communication pattern listed is time, the book describes the scientific term as chronemics, the way people handle time is very
important on being aware of if a person is interested in the topic or just wants to leave right away and stick to small talk. A good real life example
of this is, yesterday when my friend/roommate got home from work we asked each other about our day, and I went to explain to her about something
that had happened, my back window broke and won't go up she didn't seem to interested just said a short yeah and went upstairs. This showed me that

The Importance Of Nonverbal Communication
Nonverbal communication also reflects and shapes the relationships that are built with other individuals. As individuals make connections with one
another, they use nonverbal communication. These include handshakes, smiles, and waves. Each of these send a message to another individual
regarding a relationship. A handshake could represent a relationship between an employer and an employee. A smile can represent a wanted
relationship between someone that an individual is attracted to. When waving to an individual it can be a way to shape a friendship.
The third function of nonverbal communication is to convey emotions. Emotions can sometimes be difficult to express. However, through nonverbal
communication it can be easier to do so. Nonverbal is more useful in expressing attitudes and feelings rather than ideas.
When in the midst of other cultures, nonverbal communication can be crucial and interpreted differently depending on who an individual is talking to
or about. Nonverbal communication is sending and receiving messages without verbal words. It can be intentional as well as nonintentional. This type
of communication can vary throughout touch, eye contact, facial expression, and body posture. Culture does influence nonverbal communication. In this
sense, findings imply that the construction of human culture may bear some resemblance to the construction of culture among some other mammals,
for whom social structure is built from non–spoken communication (Weisbuch & Ambady, 2009).
Nonverbal language is a form of nonverbal communication. It is also recognized as a cultural influence. An example of this is the volume in which
something is communicated. Depending on the culture the volume can be interpreted differently. In some cultures, such as German, high volume is a
sign of confidence. To many in the German culture this is a sign of a natural leader. However, in the Asian culture it can be perceived as anger or
arrogance. Nonverbal language is also interpreted differently among different personality types. For extroverts, a high volume means that the individual
is outgoing and personable. For introverts, this volume level can be obnoxious. Volume of the nonverbal language has similar effects if it is low. An

NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION
INTRODUCTION
On September 12, 2008, I observed two people; Person A and Person B. The observation took place at Applebee's, a local restaurant, beginning at
7:21 p.m. and ending observation at 8:06 p.m. I was serving their table for the evening, enabling myself to observe them closely. The restaurant had
died down from the dinner rush, leaving them one of three tables in the smoking section, normally filled with eight. Along with the outside light fading,
the lighting indoors was dim, making the dining experience feel more quiet and intimate. The background noise was filled with a light roar of other
group's conversations, and a jazz station played quietly from the speakers overhead.
OBSERVATIONOF PERSON A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I could observe many times of laughter, and took note of no negative expressions.
Along the lines of laughter, another observation I observed was Person A's tone. I was able to observe this closely walking by their table several
times throughout the night. Person A had a deep, gentle voice that stayed at a fairly steady low volume throughout dinner. He spoke fairly fast, but
I think he was simply excited to be with Person B; trying to fit in as much as he could. His laughter was low and hearty, but stayed near the volume
he spoke. He also used a lot of hand gestures. His stories were filled with help from his hands and arms. He was quite animated and looked excited to
be talking. At one point it looked as if he was trying to describe a house using hand gestures.
One last nonverbal observation I will mention is that of Person A's posture. He generally sat hunched over the table, rarely sitting up straight.
Combined with the other nonverbal observations, this posture suggests he wanted to be as near to Person B as possible.
OBSERVATION OF PERSON B
Person B was a female around the age of 22. She was about 5 ВЅ feet tall with a slender build and shoulder–length blonde hair. The first nonverbal
observation I made about Person B was the way she dressed. She had a knee–length black skirt paired with a light blue sweater. This outfit suggested
she was dressed up for a special event. However, her

BCOM 103: NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION ASSIGNMENT
PART A:
The following are the 10 nonverbal communication tips for my friend before attending an interview:–
1.Eye contact– It is defined as establishing an eye contact with the person whom you are talking to. This nonverbal communication is really important
for the interviewee as it shows the interviewer that you are really interested in what interviewer is saying. Also, establishing an eye contact with the
person while in an interview tells them that you are really confident on what you are saying. If we are looking at some other place while the front in
front of us is talking to us gives them bad impression that we are disinterested on what he is saying. I choose this because making direct eye contact
provides a comfort level for others to communicate in return.
2.Tone of our voice– It is defined as the volume of our speech or in other words, how loudly or slowly we are talking to others. With our tone of our
voice, we can actually communicate with other person without even speaking. Our tone can tell the other persons that how we are feeling. Are we
happy, sad, emotional, angry, and frustrated or just being sarcastic? I choose this because speaking in high pitched voice with the interviewer can make
a bad impression. So we should talk softly.
3.Facial Expressions– The expressions that can be interpreted from our face are known as the facial expressions. Our facial expressions convey our
emotions and feelings. Anger,

Nonverbal Communication
Nonverbal communication includes all intentional and unintentional stimuli between communicating parties. An example of intentional nonverbal
communication is when you observe a friend approaching, and you offer a broad smile as part of your greeting. Another example would be waving at
another person in another car who let you in their lane during heavy traffic, as a means of saying thank you. An example of unintentional nonverbal
communication is frowning because the sun is in your eyes making someone mistakenly believe you're unhappy to see him or her. Also touching
someone's hand for an extended amount of time could cause that person to think you are flirting when really it was an unintentional nonverbal
communication.
2.Give three different examples of beauty and how it is judged differently in different cultures.
1. In the United States, people tend to value the appearance of men with muscular bodies and women who are tall and slender.
2. In large parts of Africa, plumpness is considered a sign of beauty, health, and wealth, and slimness is evidence of unhappiness, disease, or
mistreatment at the hands of one's husband.
3. In some Asian cultures neck stretching is seen as a sign of beauty.
3.What are some ways posture communicates about culture?
Bowing rituals are very complicated. Lower status bows first and lowest and higher status determines how long bow should last. Slouching in Germany
and Sweden, is a sign of rudeness and poor manners. In Thailand they

Nonverbal Communication In Verbally
Although there were times that I considered myself helping to deescalate the situation between Brenda and I, I was very much a part of the problem
by being pass aggressive. Wood (2016) states that passive aggression is acting aggressively while denying feelings or acting aggressive. Verbally I
could have tried having dialogue with Brenda to understand her perspective of what she was thinking to understand how she was feeling. I should
have voiced how I felt, instead of trying to avoid the conflict, due to fear of what I might have inappropriately said. Wood states (2016), competent
interpersonal communicators are sensitive to others and their preferences and choose their words accordingly.
Furthermore, I communicated with Brenda through my actions. Though I did not say anything I still communicated with her.Nonverbal communication
focuses on the messages people send to one another that do not contain words, such as messages sent through body motions; eye contact, touch, and
vocal qualities; and the use of time, space, artifacts, dress, and even smell, according to Neuliep (2015).
As I stated earlier in this paper I am sure I unconsciously made unpleasant faces, frowned, and had aggressive body language towards Brenda. This
probably gave Brenda a perception of me being angry or upset. While Brenda ignored me, walked pass me with her head turned in the other
direction, never acknowledged me with a smile, and look at me with a frown, my perception of Brenda was that she is an unhappy negative person.
Wood (2016) states that with our faces, we can indicate disapproval (scowls), doubt (raised eyebrows), admiration (warm gazes), and resistance
(stares). The way Brenda and I reacted towards each other verbally was mirrored in our nonverbal communication. When Brenda would say things to
me I didn't like, such as "I do not have time to talk to you about the meeting". I would give out a huge sigh of annoyance. Maybe if we took the time
to listen to each other we would have avoided a lot of the strife and became more productive.

Communication is a common necessity among people. Communication is needed in order to interact with other people in almost everything within day
to day life. Communication can be viewed in two subdivisions, verbal communication and nonverbal communication. Verbal communication is based
on using words and sounds to communicate with another person. Oppositely we have nonverbal communication, which is communication through
sending and receiving wordless clues. Examples of nonverbal communication can include things like gestures, facial expressions, hugging, and shaking

696–697). Darwin believes our emotions are interlaced with our body and work as one to send signals to people. Nonverbal communication has the
ability to reveal a person's state of mind without them being aware or having conscious control over things such as facial expressions, eye movement,
and gestures. Nonverbal communication also has the ability to alter the meaning or understanding of the verbal message for example, winking at the
end of your sentence. The mid–1960's saw an outburst of research in many areas of nonverbal communication. During this period of research there was
a great deal of excitement concerning the influence of nonverbal cues. Early empirical work aimed to make the argument that nonverbal behavior
should not be discounted. Many studies were published exhibiting nonverbal communication affecting people's reactions. However, an important
element had been left out. Theoretical models and/or integrative studies were relatively uncommon, leaving behind unanswered and seemingly
unrelated information. Suddenly, an influx of scholarly volumes in psychology appeared summarizing the growing body of research. Written work was
published such as Nonverbal Communication (Weitz, 1979) and other popular books including Body Language (Fast. 1970), which focused on how to
use nonverbal communication to attract other people, and How to Read a Person Like a Book (Nierenberg & Calero, 1971) which examined nonverbal
behavior in negotiation situations.

Nonverbal Communication
Non–verbal communication:
Non–verbal communication is communication that occurs without words which is continuous. It is not what is said with words but how it is said and
expressed. There are many types of non–verbal communications like eye contact, hand movements, facial expressions, touch, gestures, etc. Non–verbal
communication is different from person to person and especially from one culture to another. Cultural background defines their non–verbal
communication as many forms of non–verbal communications like signs and signals are learned behaviour.
Eye Contact:
Western cultures generally consider eye contact to be a good gesture. It shows attentiveness, confidence and honesty. However, other cultures such as
Asian, Middle Eastern, Hispanic and Native American do not take it as a good expression, and can often be interpreted as rude and offensive.
Gestures:
Gestures such as thumbs up can be interpreted differently in different cultures. It is taken as "Okay" sign in many cultures whereas is taken as a
vulgarism in others like Latin American cultures and in Japan some even take it as money. Some cultures take snapping fingers to get the attention of a
waiter as al–right whereas some take it as disrespect and very offensive. Showing feet is taken as offensive in some Middle Eastern cultures. Some
cultures take pointing fingers as insulting too. In Polynesia, people stick out their tongue to greet people which is taken as a sign of mockery in most
of other cultures.
Touch:
Touches are taken as rudeness in most cultures. Shaking hands is considered to be acceptable in many. Similarly, acceptability of kissing, hugs, and
many other touches are different in different cultures. People in Asia are more conservative in these types of non–verbal communication. Patting head or
shoulder also has different meanings in different cultures. In some Asian cultures patting children's head is very bad signal as head is taken to be
sacred. Middle Eastern countries take touch between people from opposite genders is taken as bad character. Where and how you are touched or touch
changes the meaning of touch. So, you must be careful when you visit a new place.

The Functions Of Nonverbal Communication
1.9. Nonverbal communication:
Nonverbal communication transmits messages that are not expressed by words and can be coded by creating different meanings. Nonverbal
communication can replace, repeat, contradict, complement or enhance the message conveyed through words. It can be defined very simply as a type of
communication without words. The importance of nonverbal communication was demonstrated in 1967 by Albert Mehrabian. Following a study that
concluded that only 7% of the content of a message is transmitted through verbal communication, while 38% is transmitted through voice and 55% by
body language. (Ronald Adler 2006, 154)
1.9.1. Types of nonverbal communication:
Just as the verbal language is broken up into several categories there are different types of nonverbal communication.

Functions of nonverbal communication:
The functions of nonverbal communication relate to the intentions, motives and goals of this form of communication.
The repetition is the function that people use to points out by the use words where a street is. They also use hand gestures and signs in order to
communicate; in this case we can say that it refer to the doubling of words by signs.
The function of substitution involves replacing a word or a verbal expression with a gesture of combination of gestures.
The complementary function refers to the fact that messages are transmitted verbally accompanied by a nonverbal way of transmission of information,
which is in addition to the sent verbal message.
The accentuating function involves emphasizing verbal messages by gesturing and pointing, exactly when the word we want to emphasize is
pronounced. In a text we emphasize important words using italic or bold fonts, so the main idea will be much easier understood.
The function of adjustment refers to the fact that nonverbal communication allows us to control the flow of the verbal

Importance Of Nonverbal Communication
Proper nonverbal communication can be as effective as giving all the right verbal answers in a job interview. However, poor nonverbal
communication can hinder an interviewee's success in a job interview. Reference for Business lists an interviewee's arrival time to an interview as a
form of nonverbal communication to an interviewer. If you arrive to an interview late, you are nonverbally telling the hirer that you are irresponsible,
disorganized or not interested in the position. If you arrive on time or a few minutes early, you send a positive message. Another nonverbal form of
communication at the start of a job interview is the handshake. Psychology Today claims the best way to make a good first impression is through your
handshake. It should be strong and last between three and four seconds. You should make eye contact with your interviewer and shake her hand with a
complete grip. Depending on your occupation, you may be required to communicate messages to others on a regular basis; certain occupations –– such
as teachers, salespeople, journalists, doctors, lawyers and corporate executives –– spend a great deal of their workday communicating with others.
Using nonverbal cues can enhance how people receive your communication. Nonverbal communication indicates how a person is feeling in relation to
what they are saying, and it also reflects how people react to the message. Communicating an important message to your colleagues with excitement

As a group we decided to do our behavior symptom analysis on Jennifer Pan. At the age of 24, Jennifer Pan was charged with hiring hitman to murder
her parents. During her conviction there were three separate interrogations that police conducted, but we decided to focus on the initial interrogation by
police because it showed a large amount of deceptive and non–deceptive cues. Throughout the video our group saw deception through channels of
nonverbal communication, verbal and paralinguistics. Each group member focused on the different channels of communication and presented their
findings in this paper. Starting with nonverbal and ending with paralinguistic there are many deceptive and non–deceptive cues that helped
investigators learned the true intentions and motive behind Jennifer Pan.
Nonverbal communication is defined as communication without the use of spoken language. It includes posture, physical movements, gestures, facial
expressions, and eye contact. Nonverbal accounts for more than half of all communication. Something that needs to be done with every suspect is to
establish a baseline with them. A baseline is simply the suspect's "normal" behavior patterns. Once you have established a baseline you then can look
for changes in the baseline that might indicate deception. For nonverbal behavior, it is important to check for timing and consistency, meaning the
investigator should check before, during, and after a response for nonverbal cues. It is important to

Nonverbal Indicators of Deception: Verbal and Nonverbal...
We, as humans, have the propensity to vary in how well we encode and decode messages that are both written and spoken. This is because people
tend to range in a variety of highs and lows with regard to their verbal language abilities. This would a lot for differences in nonverbal communication
as well. Nonverbal communication refers to the exchange of information between people and an explanation or establishment of the meaning of
information by any means other than the use of spoken or written words. It includes message through a multitude of behaviors (expressive channels)
such as facial expressions, bodily movements, vocal tone and pitch, and other channels that are comprised of a variety of cues related to the encoding

Zaidel and Mehrabian hypothesized that because men engage less in emotionally expressive behavior, they are less skilled at encoding it (Infante,
Rancer, and Avtgis, 220). In an attempt to measure each sex's nonverbal decoding ability, psychologist Robert Rosenthal and his associates
developed the Profile of Nonverbal Sensitivity (PONS) test in 1979. It was found that females were higher in encoding and decoding nonverbal cues.
Such results further illustrated that the two abilities (to encode and to decode) are interrelated: if one is high in encoding, that person would also be
high in decoding; or if one is low in decoding, then that person would be low in encoding.Deception is a special form of communication that involves
much more behavioral management than other forms of communications. It is so common in today's society that it's believed that over a third of
conversations involve deception, with the average person telling two lies per day (DePaulo, Kashy, Kirkendol, Wyer, & Epstein, 1996). Although
there is no foolproof way to detect deception, there are several reliable correlates of deception. These nonverbal cues are as follows: 1) more fidgeting,
2) greater pupil dilation, 3) a higher blink rate, 4) the pressing of one's lips together, 5) more shrugs, 6) more adaptors, 7) short response length with

Verbal and Nonverbal Communication
When we are attempting to transfer our meaning to another person, we use three different modes, methods, or channels to carry our intentions. We use
these modes to tell people who we are, how we experience the world, and the meaning we attach to our experience. We communicate verbally and
nonverbally, and often with mixed signals or noise.
When two persons, A and B, are attempting to communicate with each other, theircommunication is distorted by their personalities, attitudes, values,
belief systems, biases, the assumptions they are making about each other, their experience, background, and so on. A's communication to B flows
through A's screen and through B's screen. When B responds to A, B is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are a number of forms of body language. Ambulation is a first form. We associate different meanings to different ways people carry their bodies
from one place to another. How one carries her body, whether she glides, strides, stomps, etc. tells a great deal about who she is and how she is
experiencing her environment.
Touching is perhaps the most powerful nonverbal communication form. The skin is the body's largest organ, and through the skin we take in a variety of
stimuli. We can communicate anger, interest, trust, tenderness, warmth, and a variety of other emotions very potently through touching. People differ,
however, in their willingness to touch and be touched. Some people give out nonverbal body signals that say that they do not want to be touched, and
there are other people who describe themselves and are described by others as "touchy feely." There are many taboos associated with this form of
communication. Persons can learn about their own personalities and self concepts through exploring their reactions to touching and being touched.
Eye contact is a third form of nonverbal communication. We tend to size each other up in terms of trustworthiness through reactions to each other's eye
contact. Try a little experiment with yourself. Remember the last time you were driving down the road and passed a hitch–hiker. The odds are very
high that you did not look him in the eye if you passed him up.

The Importance Of Nonverbal Communication
Throughout the world people use numerous types of communication; However, not many realize how often they use nonverbal communication.
Nonverbal communication is the act of speaking with facial expressions, eye contact, gestures, and posture (body language). This type of
communication is just as important as any other, as it can portray the wrong message. The more aware you become of nonverbal communication, the
more aware you become at noticing you are utilizing nonverbal communication and can alter your body language, facial expressions, and eyes to
portray the message you intended to from the beginning. Body language is a strong purveyor of nonverbal communication. Whether you notice it
or not, your body speaks just as loud as you do. It expresses emotions, feelings, and attitudes, sometimes even contradicting the messages conveyed
by spoken language. "Humans send and interpret such signals almost entirely subconsciously" according to Johns (2008). He attested that human
communication consists of 93 percent body language and paralinguistic cues, while only seven percent of communication consists of words
themselves. However, in many different cultures, nonverbal communication is a part of daily life and is expected. In Japan, people tend to bow
at the waist as a formal gesture expressing appreciation and respect towards a person. It can also be used as a greeting accompanied by "ohayo
gozaimasu" meaning "good morning" or "konnichi wa" meaning "hello, good afternoon". In America, service men and women salute the flag or
someone of higher power/rank as a sign of respect or admiration. This is where nonverbals contain the entire message. Nonverbal communication
also includes our posture, how we carry ourselves. Bad posture can ultimately alter the message we are creating non verbally. When you walk into a
room of people you don't know, look around at how many people are sprawled and how many are isolated. People who cross their arms over the chest
are often keeping something to themselves, or they may even be protecting themselves from something. Of course, this must be related to the situation.
If the people speaking are very comfortable with one another, the crossed arms could signify that one person is

The scene I'm going to describe is from my guilty pleasure show Crazy Ex–Girlfriend. The main character Rebecca has used lots of nonverbal
communication throughout the show. In a recent episode, her ex–boyfriend Trent returns and blackmails her into being his girlfriend again. He kept her
in her apartment for a few days and then she finally convinces him to go to her office to meet her coworkers. There Rebecca uses nonverbal
communication to let her coworker and friend Paula know she is in trouble.
The nonverbal communication Rebecca used to let Paula know she was in trouble was eye contact, gestures, facial expressions, and body movements.

Nonverbal Immediacy In The Workplace
Introduction
The workplace is not often the first place one would think that you need to convey warmth. In a professional setting, our society does not often think
about the relationships and nonverbals that express and influence behavior. A virtuous leader is one who will lead their employees to achieve desired
goals. An effective leader that provides job satisfaction is important in the workforce we have today. High job satisfaction enhances employees'
psychological and physical wellbeing (Ilardi, Leone, Kansser, & Ryan, 1983) This can in turn influence employee productivity and success for both
parties.
Supervisors can use nonverbals to connect interpersonally with subordinates. The manner in which supervisors use nonverbals to communicate with
their subordinates may be more important than the verbal content displayed between a supervisor and subordinate. This analysis will examine the issue
of subordinate emotional experience and suggest a solution to this problem by encouraging supervisors to display immediate nonverbals. (Richmond &
McCroskey, 2000b, p.195) The following paper will focus on the ways that supervisors can use nonverbal immediacy to improve subordinates
emotional well–being in and out of the workplace.
The Problem
According to etiquette expert and author Oropeza Randall, when employees feel discouraged, underappreciated, or undervalued it can lead to
disconnection and apathy which is poison to the workplace. (Gausepohl, 2017)

Nonverbal Communication
Misinterpreting someone's message while communicating nonverbal is quite common since nonverbal communication involves observing a person's
non symbolic action and inferring a meaning from that. There's many nonverbal codes but how the messages interprets is based through the political,
cultural, economic, semiotic, hermeneutic, and social dimensions of their contexts. All these components may cause confusion that's why it's important
to use the proper verbal communication when there's a misunderstanding with nonverbal communication or any sense of communication.
Last year I was in a relationship with someone who would constantly drink. As a result of him drinking I would have to deal with the consequences
of his obnoxious behavior. These behavior include verbal aggression, deception as well as nonverbal codes such as haptic and vocalic; loudness,
speech rate and their tone. Whenever I would discover that he chose to go out and drink with his friends I would get agitated. There was a time
where he wasn't allowed to consume alcohol due to some health problems and unfortunately I had to act as a parent to make sure he followed
doctor's order. I found out he went out after work to a bar and I felt defeated in a sense. Allowing my emotions to take over my thought process I
sent a text message with plenty of defensive communication and "you" language. I don't completely recalled what I exactly said but I remember
saying something like, "You're always getting drunk and it's shitty of you because you always tend to argue with me and it isn't fair." This caused
him to become frustrated since we both agreed communicating using technology wasn't the way to go with resolving anything. I realized that it's also
important what outlet you use when communicating. Explaining him in person would've probably contray outcome. As well as not using "you"
language because that made it seem that I was attacking him rather on focusing how I felt about the situation. I could've arranged a time and place
where we both calm and none of our emotions would take over us. I would say something along the lines, "I get upset when you drink because I
know it'll always end argument. I also know it's not good for your help to over drinking.

One fine afternoon there was a girl at a panda express creepily watching people and taking notes. You guessed it, that girl was me, and during my
subtle note taking on the nonverbal communications between the people at panda I witnessed just how much people rely on nonverbal
communications to get their point across. Although I witnessed several encounters of unique body language there were also a few general body
language actions that reoccurred several times in several different people. For example, when a customer would approach the counter where
employees served the food, the employee would raise their eyebrows and smile at the customer. The employee's smile, however, did not reach their
eyes meaning while it is th9er job to smile and be welcoming to the customer no one likes to serve food all day and she probably wanted to go home.
Additionally, I noticed that when customers approached the counter about 90 percent of them had their arms folded. The act of crossing your arms
means that people are trying to put a barrier between themselves and a situation that they either don't like or are uncomfortable with. This may mean
that that they were displeased with having to wait in line to get their food or are uncomfortable with making the decision of which kind of meat to get,
on the other hand it may mean nothing at all and they are simply comfortable folding their arms. Once they reached the front of the line, every
customer pointed to the food they wanted along with

Your nonverbal communication is a very important aspect when making a first impression. That's the thing with a first impression, you don't get a
do–over. You want to be convincing of your confidence and know how during a job interview; as to why the employer should choose you, over anyone
else. It's important that the messages you send with body sync with the verbal message you send. If they do not match, then that is where you get
confusion and miscommunication between people.
Below is a list of ten effective nonverbal communication tips. Review them before your interview and you should do just fine!
1)Eye contact: How interested or involved you are in the conversation is determined by the amount of eye contact you use. Eye contact is an essential
part of someone's nonverbal communications, as well as their social behavior. The amount of eye contact you use can also be received as respect,
confidence and social communication; which makes it very important to think of that in some cultures, eye contact can mean different things. In some
cultures, maintaining eye contact can be a form or disrespect, versus in North America, eye contact is a viewed as honesty.
2)Facial Expression: The human face is an essential part when it comes to expressing nonverbal communication. You face acts as a window into your
mind; it expresses countless emotions throughout the day. Facial expressions are considered to be generic through different cultures. It is important to

There are a some aspects of nonverbal communication that should be upheld and followed by all nurses and healthcare professionals. When
treating people, the results or new is not always good and there is no telling how someone will react once they are given new regarding their
health. If the news is bad, the healthcare professional tasked with giving the news should be aware of the nonverbal messages they are sending to
the message receiver. Is the sender slouched and sluggish? Are they standing up straight and smiling? Small little things like a person's posture
can completely change the tone that is delivered with a verbal message. A real situation of this is if a patient is tested to be positive for cancer, the
person tasked on giving the news would want to give off a light and even somewhat happy mood. The goal is not to get up the hopes of the patient
or to trick them but, to give them hope and let them know everything will be okay, even if there is a chance it won't be. Hope is a very powerful
tool for people and it's important to project hope through nonverbal means like body language. If a patient sees the doctor or nurse appear calm when
delivering new as serious as cancer, the tone of calmness will be sent along with the verbal message which may help the patient feel more hope and
comfort. Haptics is another aspect of nonverbal communication that is used by nurses daily. The definition of haptics is the most primitive form of
nonverbal communication, touch. Using only touch can still allow communication of feelings, control someone's behavior, and complete both ritualistic
and task–related actions. Nurses won't generally use touch to communicate their feelings when dealing with patients although there may be certain
situations where it would be appropriate but for the most part it is not very professional. Being able to control a person's behavior nonverbally could
be useful. If a patient has some sort of memory problem which causes them to get lost consistently, it may be easier for them to remember a nonverbal
command like a hand gesture over just hearing a command verbally. Almost everyone in all professions with use ritualistic actions, it is apart of the
daily life of nearly all professions

Haptics is the study of touch and the use of it. Research states that "women are more likely to touch more than men. Also, they associate touch with
warmth and expression. Women are touched more gently than men are. Men are touched more harshly and they use their touch to direct, assert power,
and to express sexual interest".
Kinesics is the study of body movements, meaning gestures, facial expression, and posture. Now this is one of the nonverbal categories that are very
much misinterpreted. Research states that "women's facial and body motions generally signal approachability, and friendliness. They tend to use less
and more restrained gestures. Women are attracted to those who smile more. They tend to use facial expression a lot to send and receive messages.
Women often tilt their head and body to the side more also. And of course their posture is more intense than males' are".

By definition nonverbal communication is generated by the speaker and the environment which communicates a potential message to the listener. The
nonverbal message may not be intentional, meaning what is being communicated may not be under control of the sender. Usually these expressions
are more pure in nature, and rarely are affected by what a person wants the listener to hear. Nonverbal communication comes from the body language,
hand motions, or posture. Although this list is not comprehensive, it provides a general understanding of how complicated nonverbal communication
can become. Despite there being countless modes by which people communicate nonverbally it is possible to make sense of the message. It
becomes necessary for a speaker to learn how to use these different methods as it is a way to deliver a stronger message and engage their audience.
The more methods a speaker uses to communicate a message the stronger the message becomes. A message reinforced by the nonverbal
communication, this results in a deeper understanding. Lastly, a speaker needs to be able to read the body language of the audience. Is the audience
confused or are they tracking the conversation. Being able to observe and adjust the communication pathway is important as it drives speak to higher
understanding. A commonly discussed topic of nonverbal communication is the facial expressions. Facial expressions are where majority of the

The Importance Of Nonverbal Communication
Communication plays a key role in every culture, but the importance or preference a culture places on verbal or nonverbal communication differs
greatly. The country of Japan is a high–context culture, which means their society places a greater importance on nonverbal communication rather than
verbal communication. In order to understand why Japan places such importance on nonverbal communication, the way they verbally communicate with
others needs to be discussed first. Many cultures outside of Japan have conveyed the thought that the Japanese are unskilled in verbal communication
because they cannot convey facts accurately or express opinions logically. However, the opposite is true because in the Japaneseculture they do not

However, due to the lack of trust involved in verbal communication and the importance of politeness when conversing with others, it is easy to grasp
why the Japanese would rather converse through nonverbal communication.
Whereas with verbal communication, the Japanese place a higher importance on implicit, nonverbal communication because nonverbal cues give
truth to how an individual truly feels about a situation. "The Japanese are able to guess at each other's feelings from facial expressions, movements
of the eyes and the slightest gestures, and their conjectures are not mistaken" (Kowner, 2002, p.341). In Japan, if two individuals hold eye contact
for a lengthy period of time, it is viewed as disrespectful and an invasion of privacy. The posture of an individual is a vital aspect of nonverbal
communication, because the Japanese believe posture shows if one is being attentive and respectful during a conversation. Another nonverbal cue is
the gestures an individual uses during a conversation, which can have several different meanings and can lead to one being offended when no offense
was meant in the first place. Perhaps one of the most important forms of nonverbal communication the Japanese uses is silence. In the Japanese culture,
silence is viewed as sign of respect because it means the listener is giving weight to what is being said and thoroughly thinking through the entire
conversation. They believe that silence has more power in a

In a romantic relationship, it is easy to have miscommunication between a man and a woman. "Most researchers agree that 70% or more of the
meaning of any message is communicated through nonverbal channels like eye contact, facial expressions, posture, hand gestures, etc." (Stinnett,
2015). Verbal and nonverbal messages are like a relationship, they work well together that way the message is sent and delivered appropriately and
that there is no miscommunication. Women have their way of expressing themselves to their boyfriend, fiancГ©, and or husband and vice versa for

Another gesture that shows that she is happy is when she smiles more at home. (Vazire, Naumann, Rentfrow, & Gosling, 2009). Facial expression
defines a lot of emotion. When someone is smiling you know that they are happy. Happy people can not help but smile, at something or someone.
Showing more affection is another sign of happiness from a woman. Any physical connection on a daily from a woman towards your man through
touch is the most common human sensations. Just a simple rub on the back, the touching of the hands, or hugging can symbolize that she loves the
status of the relationship. Physical attractive is important in a relationship if there is not a physical attraction between the two then being happy and
satisfied with a romantic relationship can be difficult.
For the male side, signs of happiness can be shown through acts of reliability or contacts. If the husband is away on business or just not able to be in
the same room as their wife, a happy husband will constantly contact or messages their significant other because he genuinely misses the presences of
his wife. Another nonverbal behavior that a man can show that they are happy in their relationship is by always presenting the status of his

Nonverbal communication contains several different forms. Paralanguage, kinesics, proxemics and chronemics, are four main types of nonverbal
communication (Frederick Lunenburg, 2010). And, they are such as,
1. Kinesics
Kinesics is the study of body movements even stance (Bowden, Furnham, Walters, 2011). It incorporates facial expressions, gestures, touching, eye
behavior and some other movement of body and limbs. The physical attributes such as body shape, posture, physique, weight, skin color, hair, height
and other are related with kinesics.
Gestures disclose how individuals are feeling. Individuals tend to gesture more when they are eager, energized, and empowered. Individuals tend to
gesture less when they are crippled, worried, apprehensive about their impression. Hand gestures are utilized to express endorsement and palms spread
outward to show perplexity, give important insights to correspondence.
Facial expressions pass on an abundance of data. The specific look on an individual's face and developments of the individual's head give reliable
prompts as to endorsement, dissatisfaction, or doubt. When individuals start to encounter a feeling, their facial muscles are activated. The six universal

By exchanging the knowledge about each other's culture, not only do you gain a lot of knowledge about it but your communication will also become

Nonverbal communication is referred to as powerful because we form an impression of people mostly through nonverbal observations about physical

been made the impact of nonverbal behavior is powerful because nonverbal behaviors seem to contradict a verbal message, the spoken words carry less

The Origin Of Nonverbal Communication

  • 1. The Origin Of Nonverbal Communication Whether you realize it or not, almost all of what you say doesn 't come out of your mouth. In 1967, the Journal of Consulting Psychology published a study conducted by two researchers, UCLA professor Albert Mehrabian and Susan R. Ferris, that concluded that 93% of communication is considered nonverbal. Nonverbal communication can be anything from tone of voice, body language, and anything that doesn 't come out of your mouth basically. Nonverbal communication varies across cultures and sexes and is an essential part of our world. Knowing the facts about how we communicate and the way we react to communication is important to increase trust, clarity, and add interest to your presentation and appearance. Learning how to become sensitive to body language and nonverbal cues will help you become better at portraying your intention. Origins The origin of nonverbal communication in our world is not quite easy to point out. On http://www.study–body–language.com they point out two main reasons as to why this is. One is the belief that body language evolved over time to help fill human social needs such as finding food, needing shelter, or gathering together. Another is that there are so many different categories of nonverbal communication. They can be divided up like traits that are universal and we are born with or traits that we learn to use through our age and knowledge. We do have roots of the types of communication we use such as our culture, personal habits, education and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Nonverbal Communication Part A Ten nonverbal communication techniques to make a positive impression in a job interview are mentioned below: 1.Eye contact: It plays a major role in nonverbal communication. Eye contact should be personable. Eye contact should be made only for a few seconds at time. It shouldn't be a stare as it is natural to look away for a few seconds. If a person is not maintaining proper eye contact, it shows that the interviewee is not interested or is distracted by other things. It's always great to wash and dry hands before going for an interview. It needs to be mastered because handshake becomes first impression of the person. We choose this nonverbal cue because it shows that the interviewee is a professional person and is being formal. 3.Good posture: Person needs to sit straight while leaning forward a bit occasionally is acceptable as it shows interest and engagement in the conversation. But leaning back and slouching is not at all acceptable. A good posture is important because it conveys to the interviewer that you are serious and ready to answer all the questions. We choose this nonverbal cue because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Nonverbal Expectations Choosing to break nonverbal expectations when interacting with others was very challenging. Although I thought both options were interesting, I chose Option #1. I chose this option because working on communication is a skill that is a must for the career field I am pursing and I will benefit from it on a daily basis. Communicating with others is my weakness and something I am working to become successful in. When choosing this option I knew I was putting myself in a very uncomfortable position and possibly setting myself up for failure. Forcing myself out of my comfort zone helps boost my self–confidence and ended up being somewhat entertaining. Below are a few things I did to break nonverbal expectations when interacting with others. Celebrating St. Patrick's Day and pinching a complete stranger who was not wearing green! Helping myself to a friend's favorite drink! Sitting next to my teen daughter in silence. Speaking loud in a conversation. Sitting right next to a person when ... It is important to know them so you can read and respond to others nonverbal behavior. Nonverbal communication can easily be taken the wrong way. Each culture is different, what one gesture may mean in a culture can have a totally different meaning in another. My feelings and observations in my culture tell me in my culture we seek distance and personal space. When our personal space is invaded we may feel threatened or uncomfortable. I have also observed that eye contact is a way to show that you are engaged in what is being said, it shows a sign of respect as well. Sharing a simple smile is a kind gesture and speaks a thousand words without any verbal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Nonverbal Communication Name Institution Instructor Non–verbal Communication Introduction Communication is an important aspect in the society. It plays a major role in our day to day activities, relationships, cultural interactions and helps in every day conversations. Communication is the simple process of transferring information from the sender to the receiver. Communication is grouped into different categories; verbal communication which involves words and speech, written communication, visual communication and non–verbal communication (Knapp, Hall, Horgan, Knapp, Mark, Hall, Judith, Horgan, Terrence, 2014, p.67). The sender and the receiver play a vital role in communication and both parties have distinct ways of communicating ranging from eye ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In most instances, they are used in hand in hand with the verbal message. While the verbal message may state a point, a repeat of the same message using non–verbal aspect affirms the point. An example is when giving direction while pointing the direction. Accent verbal message. Non–verbal communication can be used to stress and accent a message. A change of tone is a non–verbal cue and in most in stances a variation of tone stresses on specific point. Complement and supplement verbal message. In most instances, non–verbal message may complement and reinforce the message and some cases contradict the verbal message. In the American culture, a nod reinforces while a wink contradicts the message. Regulates conversations. It is through the non–verbal cues that the other person knows when to speak and when to let the other party speak. Act as substitute. In some instances, nonverbal messages can substitute verbal messages. An example is the use of gestures in a situation where there is too much noise or interruptions. Turn taking Non verbal cues gives signals of when the other party can join in to the conversation. Through the gestures and alteration of tones, it makes it possible for the receiver and the sender to alternate roles during a conversation. • 6. Nonverbal Communication And Nonverbal Behavior Research Paper 1 – Nonverbal Communication "Nonverbal communication includes all aspects of communication other than words" (Wood, 2013). Nonverbal Communication –– Indispensable Compliment of Oral and Written Communication Dinica's article in Procedia, Social and Behavioral Sciences from 2014 researched how nonverbal behavior aids communication by observing how animals communicate, since humans are the only species to use language as their main form of communication. While there were some similarities between animal's and human's nonverbal behaviors, they discovered that thanks to language, humans have adapted to using their words to communicate information more and pick up on less nonverbal cues. Animal communication was limited based on their body features and the range of ways they could use their bodies to communicate different things. It talks about how children learn nonverbal communication first and learn to pick up on cues as a young kid until they become old enough to use full sentences. This makes it so many of the nonverbal cues are learned at a young age from children watching their parents communicate. It is believed that women have a better ability at perceiving nonverbal cues since they are often the ones communicating with young children. The article then goes on to discuss different areas of nonverbal communication. The first area is body language. Similar to class it mentions how facial expressions are great for communicating emotions and posture can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Nonverbal Communication NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION JOB INTERVIEW These are ten non–verbal communicators that say a lot about your person and/or develop positive/negative first impressions. First impressions cannot be taken back so it is important to make a good one the first time around. These are some tips you can use to make sure your interview ready and to make sure you give off a good first impression Clothing – The way you dress says a lot about your character, this is why people say "dress for success". If you are nicely put together in formal clothing the interviewer is more likely to have a positive impression and take you more seriously. If someone is dressed unsavory the more likely they are to give off negative nonverbal communication. Facial expressions – Make sure your facial expressions match the type of outcome you want to receive. If you look unimpressed or look like you don't want to be there, your facial expressions will show this. Try to look positive, optimistic, and like your wanting to be there. This could be as simple as looking at the employer with a slight smile. Try not to show any negative non–verbals, even if the next question they ask you throws you off guard. Gestures – Gestures like nodding or agreeing ques will signal to the employer that you are actively involved in the conversation and following along. This is important because you want to show that you are listening to what the employer has to say. However, showing too many hand gestures and body gestures while ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Nonverbal Communication NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION Nonverbal Communication Techniques for Acing Interviews Personal Hygiene Shower, brush your teeth, comb/style your hair, use deodorant, and avoid using excess cologne or perfume. You want to be properly groomed in order to make a positive first impression and show the interviewer you're serious about the job. Many people are sensitive or allergic to specific or strong scents, and not using excessive amounts of cologne or perfume demonstrates that you are aware of this. Dress Professionally Research the company's dress code so you can dress appropriately. If you can't find anything about a dress code (or if the company doesn't have one), use your best judgement to determine what might be appropriate attire for the company. How you dress says a lot about how serious you are about an interview. It's important to dress for the job you want; if your goal is to work in an office or business environment, wearing street clothes will not help you achieve that goal. It's important to remember that professional attire for an interview at a retail chain like Walmart or Canadian Tire would look different from one at a bank or insurance company. Handshaking Etiquette Prior to the interview, keep your hands open in order to prevent them becoming overly sweaty. Keep a tissue in your pocket to discreetly dry your hands if necessary. Sweaty hands could indicate to the interviewer that you are nervous.

Nonverbal Observation Observations of Nonverbal Communications Between Two Strangers Charlie Steward University of Alaska Anchorage Fundamentals of Oral Communications Fall 2017 Professor Peyton Introduction When most of us think about communication, many of us immediately imagine ourselves talking to someone or writing them a message. Most of us do not actively think about the equally or more likely, much more important nonverbal cues that are very much a part of how people perceive our chosen messages. The main types of nonverbal communication cues that I focused on while I was observing my subjects were: Kinesics, the gestures we make or how we move about when we are communicating. Haptics, the way we interpret things physically. Appearance, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He had a newspaper folded neatly in front of him. The woman, her mostly gray blonde hair freshly styled and worm to just below her shoulders, wore a blue medium–heavy summer jacket with a very colorful scarf wrapped around her neck. Her pants were comfortable looking jeans, and her shoes were almost new looking black flat walking shoes. She only had a cup of tea in front of her with two bags, which she dipped up and down constantly until she pulled them out and began drinking. They both wore wedding bands on their ring fingers. I would imagine them both to be in their late sixties to early seventies. Relationship These two people were obviously, to me, man and wife, as they leaned toward each other and kissed on a couple of occasions during my time observing them. In the first few minutes, I noticed that the woman would sometimes reach her hand out and rest it on the man's forearm, smiling at him and gently patting and caressing his forearm as she did but would also appear as though she wasn't really paying much attention to what he was saying a lot of the time. The man would constantly smile and once even took his wife's hands in his to gently kiss them before letting them go. He would also talk, at great length, about something I can only imagine was possibly boring or had been talked about before in the relationship. The constant eye contact while talking and occasional touching and kissing lead me to the conclusion that these were two people

  • 12. The Importance Of Nonverbal Communication 1.Nonverbal rules that govern our nonverbal behavior. North Americans speak in higher volumes without lengthy pauses in their speech (paralinguistic) People tend to stand far apart and have minimum physical contact while having a conversation, depending on a relationship (noncontact culture) People tend to smile very often, depending on scenario (facial expression) It is very common to wear a hat everywhere and dress casually for most occasions (physical appearance) Eye contact is used to make sure that the message was understood or to show that you are paying attention (eye contact) Monochromic concept of time, punctuality is highly valued (time orientation) Silence is considered a negative behavior (silence) 2.a) Last Saturday, I went to a car dealership to see the kinds of deals available. I used silence and lengthy pauses to see what kind of reaction I would get out of the salesman. b) In most of my previous experiences, the salesman would be very talkative and ask lots of personal questions to continue a conversation throughout the showing of a vehicle. At times, I felt uncomfortable because I could see how this person had a hard time figuring out whether I liked anything that he was trying to sell to me. It seemed like I was gaining a reputation of a difficult customer. c) This awkward silence made the salesman very uncomfortable; he gave out more information than other salesman did on any previous occasion. • 13. Nonverbal Communication The typical teacher in a classroom environment is immensely active; The teacher is likely in continual verbal contact with students: answering questions, asking students questions, presenting material, etc. The teacher also communicates mood and feeling as well as certain meanings through a steady stream of physical activity; a teacher leans forward, taps, points, waves his hand, turns, smiles, frowns. This non verbal activity can be divided into four categories: conducting, acting, wielding and personal, and increased effectiveness in these categories can produce a enriching education process for students when complemented with verbal aspects of a classroom, even for students who have learning or mental disabilities, specifically students with down syndrome. It is easy to observe that a teacher's nonverbal communication skills are a basic and important component of teaching much like verbal communication, and varying effectiveness can help or hinder a student's success. To begin with, it is important to know the four categories that a teacher's nonverbal communication can be put in: conducting, acting, wielding and personal. First off, in conducting, a teacher uses physical motion to direct classroom involvement; a teacher attempts to "control student participation and obtain attentive behaviour"(Hennings 43). In controlling student participation a teacher draws attention to "materials, objects, persons,or even symbolic representations"(Hennings 43). A teacher will gesture ... • 14. Examples Of Nonverbal Communication Chapter 7 is about nonverbal communication message of Looking Out Looking In question asks to name three different types of nonverbal communication and give a real life example of each, then show which nonverbal function it serves and discuss the level of ambiguity that is present with each. Three types of nonverbal communication are gestures, touch, and time. The first nonverbal communication pattern listed is gestures, gestures are the movements of hands and arms. Gestures were one of the first forms of human communication. The most used gestures are called illustrators which accompany speech but don't stand on their own. The second most common type of gestures are called emblems which are nonverbal behaviors that have a specific ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A real life example of touch is one time I was having a deep conversation with my mentor and he new I was having a hard time and he touched my shoulder when he was talking with me and it was just a level of comfort and care that filled my body to know that everything will be okay and I am cared for, so in this aspect touch was used correctly. Touch has the nonverbal function of complementing, touch complements the message and emotions relating to the message. The level of ambiguity for touch is pretty low, I believe that the touch being used is easy to determine what is being put forth, by the amount of pressure used, where the touch was and in what context. The third nonverbal communication pattern listed is time, the book describes the scientific term as chronemics, the way people handle time is very important on being aware of if a person is interested in the topic or just wants to leave right away and stick to small talk. A good real life example of this is, yesterday when my friend/roommate got home from work we asked each other about our day, and I went to explain to her about something that had happened, my back window broke and won't go up she didn't seem to interested just said a short yeah and went upstairs. This showed me that she didn't really care about my window or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. The Importance Of Nonverbal Communication Nonverbal communication also reflects and shapes the relationships that are built with other individuals. As individuals make connections with one another, they use nonverbal communication. These include handshakes, smiles, and waves. Each of these send a message to another individual regarding a relationship. A handshake could represent a relationship between an employer and an employee. A smile can represent a wanted relationship between someone that an individual is attracted to. When waving to an individual it can be a way to shape a friendship. The third function of nonverbal communication is to convey emotions. Emotions can sometimes be difficult to express. However, through nonverbal communication it can be easier to do so. Nonverbal is more useful in expressing attitudes and feelings rather than ideas. When in the midst of other cultures, nonverbal communication can be crucial and interpreted differently depending on who an individual is talking to or about. Nonverbal communication is sending and receiving messages without verbal words. It can be intentional as well as nonintentional. This type of communication can vary throughout touch, eye contact, facial expression, and body posture. Culture does influence nonverbal communication. In this sense, findings imply that the construction of human culture may bear some resemblance to the construction of culture among some other mammals, for whom social structure is built from non–spoken communication (Weisbuch & Ambady, 2009). Nonverbal language is a form of nonverbal communication. It is also recognized as a cultural influence. An example of this is the volume in which something is communicated. Depending on the culture the volume can be interpreted differently. In some cultures, such as German, high volume is a sign of confidence. To many in the German culture this is a sign of a natural leader. However, in the Asian culture it can be perceived as anger or arrogance. Nonverbal language is also interpreted differently among different personality types. For extroverts, a high volume means that the individual is outgoing and personable. For introverts, this volume level can be obnoxious. Volume of the nonverbal language has similar effects if it is low. An ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Nonverbal Observation Essay NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION INTRODUCTION On September 12, 2008, I observed two people; Person A and Person B. The observation took place at Applebee's, a local restaurant, beginning at 7:21 p.m. and ending observation at 8:06 p.m. I was serving their table for the evening, enabling myself to observe them closely. The restaurant had died down from the dinner rush, leaving them one of three tables in the smoking section, normally filled with eight. Along with the outside light fading, the lighting indoors was dim, making the dining experience feel more quiet and intimate. The background noise was filled with a light roar of other group's conversations, and a jazz station played quietly from the speakers overhead. OBSERVATIONOF PERSON A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I could observe many times of laughter, and took note of no negative expressions. Along the lines of laughter, another observation I observed was Person A's tone. I was able to observe this closely walking by their table several times throughout the night. Person A had a deep, gentle voice that stayed at a fairly steady low volume throughout dinner. He spoke fairly fast, but I think he was simply excited to be with Person B; trying to fit in as much as he could. His laughter was low and hearty, but stayed near the volume he spoke. He also used a lot of hand gestures. His stories were filled with help from his hands and arms. He was quite animated and looked excited to be talking. OBSERVATION OF PERSON B Person B was a female around the age of 22. She was about 5 ВЅ feet tall with a slender build and shoulder–length blonde hair. The first nonverbal observation I made about Person B was the way she dressed. She had a knee–length black skirt paired with a light blue sweater. This outfit suggested she was dressed up for a special event. However, her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. Nonverbal Communication BCOM 103: NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION ASSIGNMENT PART A: The following are the 10 nonverbal communication tips for my friend before attending an interview:– 1.Eye contact– It is defined as establishing an eye contact with the person whom you are talking to. This nonverbal communication is really important for the interviewee as it shows the interviewer that you are really interested in what interviewer is saying. Also, establishing an eye contact with the person while in an interview tells them that you are really confident on what you are saying. If we are looking at some other place while the front in front of us is talking to us gives them bad impression that we are disinterested on what he is saying. I choose this because making direct eye contact provides a comfort level for others to communicate in return. 2.Tone of our voice– It is defined as the volume of our speech or in other words, how loudly or slowly we are talking to others. With our tone of our voice, we can actually communicate with other person without even speaking. Our tone can tell the other persons that how we are feeling. Are we happy, sad, emotional, angry, and frustrated or just being sarcastic? I choose this because speaking in high pitched voice with the interviewer can make a bad impression. So we should talk softly. 3.Facial Expressions– The expressions that can be interpreted from our face are known as the facial expressions. Our facial expressions convey our emotions and feelings. • 18. Nonverbal Communication Nonverbal communication includes all intentional and unintentional stimuli between communicating parties. An example of intentional nonverbal communication is when you observe a friend approaching, and you offer a broad smile as part of your greeting. Another example would be waving at another person in another car who let you in their lane during heavy traffic, as a means of saying thank you. An example of unintentional nonverbal communication is frowning because the sun is in your eyes making someone mistakenly believe you're unhappy to see him or her. Also touching someone's hand for an extended amount of time could cause that person to think you are flirting when really it was an unintentional nonverbal communication. 2.Give three different examples of beauty and how it is judged differently in different cultures. 1. In the United States, people tend to value the appearance of men with muscular bodies and women who are tall and slender. 2. In large parts of Africa, plumpness is considered a sign of beauty, health, and wealth, and slimness is evidence of unhappiness, disease, or mistreatment at the hands of one's husband. 3. In some Asian cultures neck stretching is seen as a sign of beauty. 3.What are some ways posture communicates about culture? Bowing rituals are very complicated. Lower status bows first and lowest and higher status determines how long bow should last. Slouching in Germany and Sweden, is a sign of rudeness and poor manners. In Thailand they ... • 19. Nonverbal Communication In Verbally Although there were times that I considered myself helping to deescalate the situation between Brenda and I, I was very much a part of the problem by being pass aggressive. Wood (2016) states that passive aggression is acting aggressively while denying feelings or acting aggressive. Verbally I could have tried having dialogue with Brenda to understand her perspective of what she was thinking to understand how she was feeling. I should have voiced how I felt, instead of trying to avoid the conflict, due to fear of what I might have inappropriately said. Wood states (2016), competent interpersonal communicators are sensitive to others and their preferences and choose their words accordingly. Furthermore, I communicated with Brenda through my actions. Though I did not say anything I still communicated with her.Nonverbal communication focuses on the messages people send to one another that do not contain words, such as messages sent through body motions; eye contact, touch, and vocal qualities; and the use of time, space, artifacts, dress, and even smell, according to Neuliep (2015). As I stated earlier in this paper I am sure I unconsciously made unpleasant faces, frowned, and had aggressive body language towards Brenda. This probably gave Brenda a perception of me being angry or upset. While Brenda ignored me, walked pass me with her head turned in the other direction, never acknowledged me with a smile, and look at me with a frown, my perception of Brenda was that she is an unhappy negative person. Wood (2016) states that with our faces, we can indicate disapproval (scowls), doubt (raised eyebrows), admiration (warm gazes), and resistance (stares). The way Brenda and I reacted towards each other verbally was mirrored in our nonverbal communication. When Brenda would say things to me I didn't like, such as "I do not have time to talk to you about the meeting". I would give out a huge sigh of annoyance. Maybe if we took the time to listen to each other we would have avoided a lot of the strife and became more productive. Nonverbal communication also has the ability to alter the meaning or understanding of the verbal message for example, winking at the end of your sentence. The mid–1960's saw an outburst of research in many areas of nonverbal communication. During this period of research there was a great deal of excitement concerning the influence of nonverbal cues. Early empirical work aimed to make the argument that nonverbal behavior should not be discounted. Many studies were published exhibiting nonverbal communication affecting people's reactions. However, an important element had been left out. Theoretical models and/or integrative studies were relatively uncommon, leaving behind unanswered and seemingly unrelated information. Suddenly, an influx of scholarly volumes in psychology appeared summarizing the growing body of research. Written work was published such as Nonverbal Communication (Weitz, 1979) and other popular books including Body Language (Fast. 1970), which focused on how to use nonverbal communication to attract other people, and How to Read a Person Like a Book (Nierenberg & Calero, 1971) which examined nonverbal behavior in negotiation situations. ... The importance of nonverbal communication was demonstrated in 1967 by Albert Mehrabian. The accentuating function involves emphasizing verbal messages by gesturing and pointing, exactly when the word we want to emphasize is pronounced. In a text we emphasize important words using italic or bold fonts, so the main idea will be much easier understood. However, poor nonverbal communication can hinder an interviewee's success in a job interview. Reference for Business lists an interviewee's arrival time to an interview as a form of nonverbal communication to an interviewer. If you arrive to an interview late, you are nonverbally telling the hirer that you are irresponsible, disorganized or not interested in the position. If you arrive on time or a few minutes early, you send a positive message. Another nonverbal form of communication at the start of a job interview is the handshake. Psychology Today claims the best way to make a good first impression is through your handshake. It should be strong and last between three and four seconds. You should make eye contact with your interviewer and shake her hand with a complete grip. Depending on your occupation, you may be required to communicate messages to others on a regular basis; certain occupations –– such as teachers, salespeople, journalists, doctors, lawyers and corporate executives –– spend a great deal of their workday communicating with others. • 26. Nonverbal Communication As a group we decided to do our behavior symptom analysis on Jennifer Pan. At the age of 24, Jennifer Pan was charged with hiring hitman to murder her parents. During her conviction there were three separate interrogations that police conducted, but we decided to focus on the initial interrogation by police because it showed a large amount of deceptive and non–deceptive cues. Throughout the video our group saw deception through channels of nonverbal communication, verbal and paralinguistics. Each group member focused on the different channels of communication and presented their findings in this paper. Starting with nonverbal and ending with paralinguistic there are many deceptive and non–deceptive cues that helped investigators learned the true intentions and motive behind Jennifer Pan. Nonverbal communication is defined as communication without the use of spoken language. It includes posture, physical movements, gestures, facial expressions, and eye contact. Nonverbal accounts for more than half of all communication. Something that needs to be done with every suspect is to establish a baseline with them. A baseline is simply the suspect's "normal" behavior patterns. Once you have established a baseline you then can look for changes in the baseline that might indicate deception. For nonverbal behavior, it is important to check for timing and consistency, meaning the investigator should check before, during, and after a response for nonverbal cues. It is important to ... This is because people tend to range in a variety of highs and lows with regard to their verbal language abilities. This would a lot for differences in nonverbal communication as well. Nonverbal communication refers to the exchange of information between people and an explanation or establishment of the meaning of information by any means other than the use of spoken or written words. It includes message through a multitude of behaviors (expressive channels) such as facial expressions, bodily movements, vocal tone and pitch, and other channels that are comprised of a variety of cues related to the encoding and the ... Zaidel and Mehrabian hypothesized that because men engage less in emotionally expressive behavior, they are less skilled at encoding it (Infante, Rancer, and Avtgis, 220). In an attempt to measure each sex's nonverbal decoding ability, psychologist Robert Rosenthal and his associates developed the Profile of Nonverbal Sensitivity (PONS) test in 1979. It was found that females were higher in encoding and decoding nonverbal cues. Such results further illustrated that the two abilities (to encode and to decode) are interrelated: if one is high in encoding, that person would also be high in decoding; or if one is low in decoding, then that person would be low in encoding.Deception is a special form of communication that involves much more behavioral management than other forms of communications. It is so common in today's society that it's believed that over a third of conversations involve deception, with the average person telling two lies per day (DePaulo, Kashy, Kirkendol, Wyer, & Epstein, 1996). Although there is no foolproof way to detect deception, there are several reliable correlates of deception. These nonverbal cues are as follows: 1) more fidgeting, 2) greater pupil dilation, 3) a higher blink rate, 4) the pressing of one's lips together, 5) more shrugs, 6) more adaptors, 7) short response length with fewer details, 8) a greater lack of ... When two persons, A and B, are attempting to communicate with each other, theircommunication is distorted by their personalities, attitudes, values, belief systems, biases, the assumptions they are making about each other, their experience, background, and so on. Ambulation is a first form. We associate different meanings to different ways people carry their bodies from one place to another. How one carries her body, whether she glides, strides, stomps, etc. tells a great deal about who she is and how she is experiencing her environment. Touching is perhaps the most powerful nonverbal communication form. The skin is the body's largest organ, and through the skin we take in a variety of stimuli. We can communicate anger, interest, trust, tenderness, warmth, and a variety of other emotions very potently through touching. People differ, however, in their willingness to touch and be touched. Some people give out nonverbal body signals that say that they do not want to be touched, and there are other people who describe themselves and are described by others as "touchy feely." There are many taboos associated with this form of communication. Persons can learn about their own personalities and self concepts through exploring their reactions to touching and being touched. Eye contact is a third form of nonverbal communication. We tend to size each other up in terms of trustworthiness through reactions to each other's eye contact. Try a little experiment with yourself. • 29. The Importance Of Nonverbal Communication Throughout the world people use numerous types of communication; However, not many realize how often they use nonverbal communication. Nonverbal communication is the act of speaking with facial expressions, eye contact, gestures, and posture (body language). This type of communication is just as important as any other, as it can portray the wrong message. The more aware you become of nonverbal communication, the more aware you become at noticing you are utilizing nonverbal communication and can alter your body language, facial expressions, and eyes to portray the message you intended to from the beginning. Body language is a strong purveyor of nonverbal communication. Whether you notice it or not, your body speaks just as loud as you do. It expresses emotions, feelings, and attitudes, sometimes even contradicting the messages conveyed by spoken language. "Humans send and interpret such signals almost entirely subconsciously" according to Johns (2008). He attested that human communication consists of 93 percent body language and paralinguistic cues, while only seven percent of communication consists of words themselves. However, in many different cultures, nonverbal communication is a part of daily life and is expected. In Japan, people tend to bow at the waist as a formal gesture expressing appreciation and respect towards a person. It can also be used as a greeting accompanied by "ohayo gozaimasu" meaning "good morning" or "konnichi wa" meaning "hello, good afternoon". In America, service men and women salute the flag or someone of higher power/rank as a sign of respect or admiration. This is where nonverbals contain the entire message. Nonverbal communication also includes our posture, how we carry ourselves. Bad posture can ultimately alter the message we are creating non verbally. When you walk into a room of people you don't know, look around at how many people are sprawled and how many are isolated. In a professional setting, our society does not often think about the relationships and nonverbals that express and influence behavior. A virtuous leader is one who will lead their employees to achieve desired goals. An effective leader that provides job satisfaction is important in the workforce we have today. High job satisfaction enhances employees' psychological and physical wellbeing (Ilardi, Leone, Kansser, & Ryan, 1983) This can in turn influence employee productivity and success for both parties. Supervisors can use nonverbals to connect interpersonally with subordinates. The manner in which supervisors use nonverbals to communicate with their subordinates may be more important than the verbal content displayed between a supervisor and subordinate. This analysis will examine the issue of subordinate emotional experience and suggest a solution to this problem by encouraging supervisors to display immediate nonverbals. (Richmond & McCroskey, 2000b, p.195) The following paper will focus on the ways that supervisors can use nonverbal immediacy to improve subordinates emotional well–being in and out of the workplace. • 32. Nonverbal Communication Misinterpreting someone's message while communicating nonverbal is quite common since nonverbal communication involves observing a person's non symbolic action and inferring a meaning from that. There's many nonverbal codes but how the messages interprets is based through the political, cultural, economic, semiotic, hermeneutic, and social dimensions of their contexts. All these components may cause confusion that's why it's important to use the proper verbal communication when there's a misunderstanding with nonverbal communication or any sense of communication. Last year I was in a relationship with someone who would constantly drink. As a result of him drinking I would have to deal with the consequences of his obnoxious behavior. These behavior include verbal aggression, deception as well as nonverbal codes such as haptic and vocalic; loudness, speech rate and their tone. Whenever I would discover that he chose to go out and drink with his friends I would get agitated. There was a time where he wasn't allowed to consume alcohol due to some health problems and unfortunately I had to act as a parent to make sure he followed doctor's order. I found out he went out after work to a bar and I felt defeated in a sense. Allowing my emotions to take over my thought process I sent a text message with plenty of defensive communication and "you" language. I don't completely recalled what I exactly said but I remember saying something like, "You're always getting drunk and it's shitty of you because you always tend to argue with me and it isn't fair." This caused him to become frustrated since we both agreed communicating using technology wasn't the way to go with resolving anything. I realized that it's also important what outlet you use when communicating. Explaining him in person would've probably contray outcome. As well as not using "you" language because that made it seem that I was attacking him rather on focusing how I felt about the situation. I could've arranged a time and place where we both calm and none of our emotions would take over us. I would say something along the lines, "I get upset when you drink because I know it'll always end argument. I also know it's not good for your help to over drinking. ... You guessed it, that girl was me, and during my subtle note taking on the nonverbal communications between the people at panda I witnessed just how much people rely on nonverbal communications to get their point across. Although I witnessed several encounters of unique body language there were also a few general body language actions that reoccurred several times in several different people. For example, when a customer would approach the counter where employees served the food, the employee would raise their eyebrows and smile at the customer. The employee's smile, however, did not reach their eyes meaning while it is th9er job to smile and be welcoming to the customer no one likes to serve food all day and she probably wanted to go home. Additionally, I noticed that when customers approached the counter about 90 percent of them had their arms folded. The act of crossing your arms means that people are trying to put a barrier between themselves and a situation that they either don't like or are uncomfortable with. This may mean that that they were displeased with having to wait in line to get their food or are uncomfortable with making the decision of which kind of meat to get, on the other hand it may mean nothing at all and they are simply comfortable folding their arms. It's important that the messages you send with body sync with the verbal message you send. If they do not match, then that is where you get confusion and miscommunication between people. Below is a list of ten effective nonverbal communication tips. Review them before your interview and you should do just fine! 1)Eye contact: How interested or involved you are in the conversation is determined by the amount of eye contact you use. Eye contact is an essential part of someone's nonverbal communications, as well as their social behavior. The amount of eye contact you use can also be received as respect, confidence and social communication; which makes it very important to think of that in some cultures, eye contact can mean different things. In some cultures, maintaining eye contact can be a form or disrespect, versus in North America, eye contact is a viewed as honesty. 2)Facial Expression: The human face is an essential part when it comes to expressing nonverbal communication. • 35. Nonverbal Communication There are a some aspects of nonverbal communication that should be upheld and followed by all nurses and healthcare professionals. When treating people, the results or new is not always good and there is no telling how someone will react once they are given new regarding their health. If the news is bad, the healthcare professional tasked with giving the news should be aware of the nonverbal messages they are sending to the message receiver. Is the sender slouched and sluggish? Are they standing up straight and smiling? Small little things like a person's posture can completely change the tone that is delivered with a verbal message. A real situation of this is if a patient is tested to be positive for cancer, the person tasked on giving the news would want to give off a light and even somewhat happy mood. The goal is not to get up the hopes of the patient or to trick them but, to give them hope and let them know everything will be okay, even if there is a chance it won't be. Hope is a very powerful tool for people and it's important to project hope through nonverbal means like body language. If a patient sees the doctor or nurse appear calm when delivering new as serious as cancer, the tone of calmness will be sent along with the verbal message which may help the patient feel more hope and comfort. Haptics is another aspect of nonverbal communication that is used by nurses daily. The definition of haptics is the most primitive form of nonverbal communication, touch. Using only touch can still allow communication of feelings, control someone's behavior, and complete both ritualistic and task–related actions. Nurses won't generally use touch to communicate their feelings when dealing with patients although there may be certain situations where it would be appropriate but for the most part it is not very professional. Being able to control a person's behavior nonverbally could be useful. If a patient has some sort of memory problem which causes them to get lost consistently, it may be easier for them to remember a nonverbal command like a hand gesture over just hearing a command verbally. Almost everyone in all professions with use ritualistic actions, it is apart of the daily life of nearly all professions ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
