Michelangelo Buonarroti was born in 1475. He was born in a small town called Caprese, in
Tuscany, Italy. Michelangelo was one of the most famous artists of the Italian Renaissance.

Michelangelo's three greatest works of his later life, were the Tomb of Pope
Julius II, the Sistine Chapel ceiling, and the Medici Chapel(37).

Chapel(Liebert 140). The ceiling is made up of 343 figures, two hundred of these figures are
between 10–18 feet tall. The subject of the ceiling deals with "...the Creation of the World, Mans
Fall, and his ultimate reconciliation with the Lord"(Janson 359). In the center of the chapel are five

The Creation of Adam
One of the most well–known images from the Sistine Chapel ceiling is 'the Creation of Adam'
created by Michelangleo. The picture depicts God reaching out his finger to present Adam with life.
The Sistine Chapel is located in the Vatican City, Italy. It is home to one of the largest art pieces
done by artist Michelangelo. The Chapel was built in the city between 1477 and 1480 by Pope
Sixtus IV (Stefaniak). The walls of the Chapel had been painted twenty years earlier, before
Michelangelo was called in to create his ceiling masterpiece (Stefaniak).
Michelangelo is one of the best artists around whose name relates to the idea of a "masterpiece".

Chapel's ceiling in 1508. Michelangelo painted the ceiling from July 1508 to October 1512. The
creation of Adam was painted in 1511. In fact, The Creation of Adam took less than three weeks to

According to www.britannica.com/art/fresco–painting fresco painting is a method of painting water–
based pigments on freshly applied plaster, usually on wall surfaces. The colors are made by grinding
dry–powder pigments in pure water. Then, the paint dries and sets with the plaster to become a
permanent part of the wall. Fresco painting is ideal for making murals because it lends itself to a
monumental style, is durable, and has a matte surface. This contributed to why Michelangelo chose

The Sistine chapel was built between the years of 1475 and 1483 in Vatican City and is named after
the pope who had the chapel built, Sixtus IV. One of the most impressive things about the Sistine
chapel and one of the most famous works of art in history is Michelangelo's painting on the ceiling
of the chapel. The project was completed using fresco. In 1508 Michelangelo was requested by Pope
Julius II to repaint the chapel. The Chapel at the time was painted with a blue sky and gold stars.
Pope Julius II original request was to have the chapel painted with the twelve Christian Apostles and
when the project was completed Michelangelo had created more than 3,000 figures. The ceiling was

The first challenge and maybe the easiest for Michelangelo to overcome was the fact that he had no
experience painting with fresco and he considered himself a sculptor. The next challenge was the
sheer size of the painting at a whopping 14 meters by 40.5 meters. That is more than 132 square
meters larger than a basketball court. Completing this large of painting was a monumental task
enough even without all the other challenges faced by Michelangelo. Michelangelo accepted this
commission regardless and would continue to face many more challenges over the next four years.
One of the most obvious challenges that stood in the way of completing this challenging work of art
was the fact that it was the ceiling that needed to be painted. A local townsman offered to
manufacture scaffolding for Michelangelo that would hang from the ceiling, but Michelangelo
refused because he did not want to leave holes in the ceiling from where the scaffolding would have
hung. Michelangelo then created his own scaffolding that could be held in place by brackets in the

Compare And Contrast The Last Judgement And The Sistine...
Both of the paintings by Michelangelo are excellent examples of Renaissance era art. These two
paintings are the Last Judgment and the Sistine Chapel ceiling. The ceiling was worked on from
1508 to 1512 and shows many themes common throughout Renaissance art. One of the most
prominent is the stunning realism in both pieces. Despite there being hundreds of figures is both
pieces each is extremely realistic. There's a huge stress on the human figure in this painting and they
look as though they could be real people. There's also a fair amount of perspective, although this
isn't one of the most important parts of the paintings.
Another interesting motif is the international influence in the paintings. Even though the paintings
have extremely Catholic origins they have some elements of other cultures. One of the biggest ways
this is shown is in the sibyls that are between some of the scenes. These sibyls have origins from
Africa, Asia, Greece, and Ionia. These paintings also show departure from traditional Catholic

It is a famous example of Renaissance art showing portraiture, realism, and some perspective. In this
painting there are four distinct characters. Each has a different expression that shows how they are
feeling. There is also more detail in the faces then in any other parts of the painting. Another

In this paper, you will read my analyzation of The Creation of Adam painted by Michelangelo. The
painting is located on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, Rome, Italy, it is in the center
of the chapel surrounded by many other paintings. The Sistine Chapel was built in 1473 but the
paintings on the ceiling did not begin until 1508 and was not finished until about four years later in
1512. You will read about what some writers thought about The Creation of Adam coming from, Art

The first writer I will review is Fredrick Hartt he wrote, Art a History of Painting Sculpture
Architecture. Hartt is kind of surprised to see that The Creation of Adam isn't like any of the other
Creation scenes from the Book of Genesis because rather than standing on earth, the Lord is floating
in the heavens. The Lord is stretching out his hand, reaching his pointer finger forward to connect
with the extended finger of Adam who is on the barren ground waiting to be charged with energy.

24 October 2016 The Renaissance painter, sculptor, and poet Michelangelo is famous not only for
his painting of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel or his sculpture of the Biblical King David, but he
also created another Biblical figure, the Hebrew Prophet Moses. The sculpture was commissioned
by Pope Julius II, in an attempt to mirror his "larger than life" reputation and personality.
Michelangelo' Moses along with other pieces of sculpture and artwork were to be enshrined in the
Pope's planned resting place, with the Moses statue placed opposite of another figure of Saint Paul.
However, it would never come to be, as the Moses sculpture would not be completed until more
than 30 years after Pope Julius' death in 1513. Pope Julius II had commissioned Michelangelo to
paint the Sistine Chapel as well as build his entire tomb, but the chapel frescos occupied all of the

This passage constantly shows the bathos of the commotion Victor
Frankenstein has made over the making of his creature, like in the quote, where he, instead of saying
how dazzling the eyes could have looked, defiles the 'monster' and says that its eyes were a 'dull
yellow'. The passage also juxtaposes light and dark, to show how something that is intended to be so
good and revolutionary can turn out terrible, like the story in the Bible where Satan attempts to
replace God.
Victor Frankenstein usurps the role of God, as well as that of women, by creating life, making the

Beck analyzes the "Vasari" biography of Michelangelo to which he makes conclusions. The first of
which is through analyzing the text where he concludes, that the Pope was quite fixated on the
completion of the painting that "the pope was strong willed and impatient, when half the ceiling was
made, the portion from the entrance, he wanted Michelangelo to unveil it to the public, even though
it was still not finished." As previously stated image was big for the Pope as he wanted it presented

are many famous works of art that are important throughout history. There is one artwork in
particular that has struck most people. Michelangelo created a magnificent piece of work on the

one thing that has remained the same. The Pieta was carved and depicted as Mary mourning the
death of her son Jesus as she was holding his limp, dead body. This piece was commissioned
originally for a grave. There was not really any politics or religious events that influenced this piece.

and sculptor from the 1400's to the 1500's. One of his most popular works is the Sistine Chapel, it
was created in between 1508 to 1512. The Sistine Chapel is among one of the most famous interior

It was known as one of the world's great masterpieces of sculpture, and it was finished when he was
24 years old. Michelangelo's "Pieta" is now displayed at the Vatican City, in St. Peter's Basilica after

Everyday, our history and the visions of artists are threatened by time. Left alone, paint will fade,
old buildings will fall and the history associated with them will perish. As time goes by the need to
preserve and restore this history becomes increasingly important. Generations to come should not
have to miss out on these priceless pieces of history simply because these artifacts were left in ruin.
When it comes to cleaning and restoring historic art, there is always the risk of altering the work
from its original state or even worse, ruining it beyond repair; yet time and the elements put these
masterpieces at risk every day. Action must be taken in order to preserve our history. The need for
restoration and conservation is strong, however, the results of restoring works of art history can
come with heavy criticism. The team selected to restore the Sistine chapel ceiling, between 1980 and

Considering, Michelangelo went on to be one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance era, it was
very beneficial to publicize his artwork, in particular his painting. He was influential in that he
inspired a whole new generation to take a greater interest in the arts, some later even becoming as
influential as Buonarroti. So this, one could say, is more than just cause to say "exploit"

The viewer watches the developing relationship between Michelangelo and Pope Julius II, but their
exchanges become repetitive. 'Literary license' has always allowed history to be changed for the
sake of plot, including the order that Michelangelo paints the ceiling as well as the age of Pope

The Controversial Restoration of the Sistine Chapel
The restoration of the Sistine Chapel in the 1980's and 90's was very controversial. This issue began
because Michelangelo, the painter of the Sistine Chapels ceiling, did the painting as a fresco. This
means that the paint was absorbed in the wall, thus becoming part of the wall itself. Like many other
walls and building, over time they began to crack and deteriorate. During the time of the
consideration of the restoration of the chapel, the fresco had been up for over 500 years. As one
would expect, there had been many cracks in the ceiling and the coloring of the ceiling was
becoming dull. The ceiling was also dusty and covered in grime from candle smoke and burning
coal. Before the newest and most major renovation of the chapel, there had been other previous
smaller ones. In some of these restorations, a type of glue was used to temporarily brighten the dark
colors. Unfortunately, the glue helped to attract more dust and grime, which took away from the
efforts of restoring it. In one attempt to restore the ceiling, wine and bread were used to clean it. I

The paintings of Michelangelo had figures that were nude and caused an uproar. The Bible states
that Adam and Eve were naked until they knew sin, then they were ashamed. The nakedness of the

calmness, along with the smooth surfaced ceiling. Though the alignments found in the image look to
be evenly separated, the Ceiling of the Sistine is an asymmetrically balance portrait with little too
few symmetric qualities. For example, if the viewer took a certain part of the Chapel, for instance
the triangular images located to the left and right, it would be labeled as symmetric because it is
evenly balanced on both sides of the triangle. The arrangement of designs seen in the image gives a
rhythmic pattern that makes the rhythm the picture flow smoothly. The proportions of the painting
were evenly made, so there is no main proportion of the image that gains main focus.

The Renaissance, "rebirth," began in the fourteenth century which spanned all the way to the
sixteenth century. This great cultural transition that spread throughout Europe was one of the most
important periods of European history as the ideas of the Medieval age shifted to a more modern
age. Throughout this period Europe experience many major achievements in literature, architecture,
philosophy, and of course art. Out of the Renaissance, Europe gained many historically important
artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Giovanni Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, but one particular man
who would come to be known as one of the greatest artist of all time is none other than
Michelangelo Buonarroti.1 Michelangelo created many masterpieces in his lifetime, but the most
astounding piece of work he has done is the fresco on the ceiling of Rome's Sistine Chapel along
with the The Last Judgment on the altar wall that was commissioned by Pope Paul III.
Michelangelo's work for the paintings done in the Sistine Chapel would be one of the most
influential frescos of his time with its patronage and ideas of the Renaissance. Michelangelo was

The Sistine Chapel ceiling is one of my favorite paintings by Michelangelo. It took him four years to
complete it. What I love about it is that he took the Bible stories and painted them onto the ceiling.
Each paint has its own story, and that can speak louder than works at times. As it tells a story, it also
tells us a little bit of what his beliefs are.
The Bible starts by telling us about Adam and Eve. How Eve took the fruit from the snake and gave
