Pitch -
By Niall Palmer, Matt Liddle, Stephen Cook
Genre - Thriller / Drama / Social realism
We have chosen to a mix of these genres as within our research we have concluded
that the best short productions include action, a griping story and for it to be
relatable to the audience.
+Short films that we looked at such as ‘unleaded’ was an inspiration when we chose
our genre. This was because it had a great concept which was backed with action,
humor and an insight into youth culture.
+ Key conventions
- Vulgar language
- Violence and gore
- Not always return to equilibrium but do in a lot of cases.
- Camera work sometimes unorthodox to create an atmosphere.
Narrative
Our short focuses on youth culture and how it collides with drugs, this is a common
stereotype of the ‘youth’ and we want to introduce this into our production. George
is a 17 year old boy and he is in a daily routine riddled with sleep, drugs and alcohol.
As he becomes stuck in this routine it takes its toll on him mentally, anxiety begins
to take over and George seems to be living every day the exact same way.
Camera and editing – to create a sense of paranoia and show how he is being
affected mentally.
Our narrative will not follow Todorovs theory of narrative as its not a short
following normal conventions and the story line does not end up back at the
equilibrium.
audience
• A typical viewer of this sort of short film production would be in the age bracket of
15-25 year old as it’s not suitable for younger ages and too vulgar for olders,
although some anomalies will occur. They will be in a range from E-C1 social class
bracket as its very raw and relatable content in certain ways, parallel with the age.
This will also link with their economic status of middle class and will certainly be a
mix of rebels and succeeders. Based on the content it will be a niche audience this
is because it’s more of an art film instead of a mainstream production.
Ideology and youth culture
• The concept of this production is focusing on stereotypes of youth culture especially
common ones such as being, ‘junkies’ and lazy.
• We want to show the different sides of these stereotypes conforming and going against
them. This links with our social realism genre as we want to give something relatable
to the audience by giving a raw representation of youth culture in todays society.
+ Stereotypes
- "Violent! Asbos! Hoodies!"
- “They are all thieving, knife-carrying, troublemakers who waste most of their time
dossing about”
- Held responsible for a lot of crime
- Not productive
Hypodermic Needle theory
is a model of communications suggesting that an intended message is
directly received and completely accepted by the receiver is relevant as most
films that have been based around Youth Culture represented teenagers
negatively.
Inspiration
• Within our research we wanted to create an understanding on what makes a short
film.
• Short films such as ‘1150’ and ‘unleaded’ are great inspirations for our production as
their concepts both are unique and interesting through their, characters, camera
shots and editing. Also the balance between action and drama is a route we would
like to take when creating our production.
• Within researching these shorts we got to see common stereotypes of youth and drug
culture especially in shorts such as unleaded and …………
Todorovs theory of narrative
• Our narrative will not follow Todorovs theory of narrative as its not a short following
normal conventions and the story line does not end up back at the equilibrium.
