Game based learning
a motivating teaching approach
for the 21st century schools
Children like to
play, they NEED to
play…
…they need a motivation to
act and learn!
Why should we use
games in school?
We can use games to let students develop and
practice their skills
We can use games to let students increase their
knowledge
We can use games to let students be reflective
and creative
We can use games to assess and evaluate
Advantages in using
games in teaching
Increased motivation towards learning
Happiness in living the learning process
Help with disabled students and pupils with
special needs
Great use of thinking skills
Disadvantages in using
games in teaching
Difficulties for teachers to integrate games into
the lessons
Lack of devices in schools to let all students play
at the same moment
Problems related to the difficulty of explaining to
stakeholders the value of games in the learning
process
Games to evaluate students’
competences, skills and knowledge
What kind of games can we use to evaluate
students’ knowledge and skills?
Are there web tools available and ready to be used
to help teachers EVALUATE?
YES !!!!!
THERE ARE MANY TOOLS YOU CAN EASILY USE TO
CREATE DIFFERENT KINDS OF QUIZ
And to evaluate their
skills?
Are games useful?
IF YOU ASK YOUR STUDENTS TO PLAN AND CREATE GAMES, YOU
CAN ALSO ASSESS THEIR SKILLS AND COMPETENCES.
CREATING A GAME, IN FACT, REQUIRES THE USE OF HIGH ORDER
OF THINKING SKILLS (HOTS) TO PLAN IT.
CREATING A GAME REQUIRES A DEEP ANALYSIS OF THE TOPIC IN
ORDER TO FIND QUESTIONS FOR A QUIZ, THE BEST SENTENCES
TO DEFINE WORDS IN A CROSSWORD OR THE INSTRUCTIONS TO
EXPLAIN THE WAY A GAME CAN BE PLAYED.
IN CASE OF DIGITAL GAMES IT ALSO REQUIRES ICT SKILLS.
IF YOU USE THE GAMES WITH PARTNERS IT IMPLY ALSO A GREAT
COMPETENCE IN COMMUNICATION IN L2.
Games to assess
What kind of games
can teachers use to assess???
If you want to use ICT to assess there are many web tools available.
They can gather the results as well and give you a report of the
answers. They can also be really funny for your pupils.
If you use https://getkahoot.com you can prepare in a few minutes
awesome assessing tests. You only need some tablets or mobiles to let
your pupils answer the questions. You can organize the test in small
groups if you don’t have lots of devices
Teachers can also use other tools like
google forms
see an example:
http://new-twinspace.etwinning.net/c/portal/layout?p_l_id=21873436
or https://it.surveymonkey.com.
They both give the opportunity to assess and gather the
results.
Another opportunity to simplify teachers’ assessment are
the VIRTUAL CLASSES.
Students can be integrated in a virtual class and can do their homework
or be assessed directly there.
In the web there are also lots of sites that
propose games to learn so why don’t use
them?
Learnign having fun is great!!!
Schools must not be boring!
https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/en/kids-games
http://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/en/fun-and-games
http://www.learninggamesforkids.com
http://www.education.com/games/
http://www.learningchocolate.com
http://www.thekidzpage.com/learninggames/
http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/web_games_menu.htm
http://primarygamesarena.com
Children can also create their materials to play with school topics and
learning.
They can create:
flashcards
Bingo cards
domino
board games
word search
crosswords
and lots of other materials that can also be printed in paper version.
Have a try with:
www.toolsforeducators.com
Watch the tutorial recorded by 8 years old students.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-CvNAp2BGU
“”The best way to learn and keep in mind knowledge is to teach what you know to
someone else”
This DOMINO
was created
by little
students
to study
food in English
with the tool
just
presented
And what if teachers want to use
games with partners?
Visit the whole project page so you can see examples of learning games with partners:
http://new-twinspace.etwinning.net/c/portal/layout?p_l_id=21272324
Playing games with partners is
exciting, challenging and
useful!
What can teachers propose in
class and in the partnership?
Teachers can:
Prepare games together with their
students or (better) ask pupils to
think about a game for their
partners and then let them create it
Share the link with partners
In the end ask students to evaluate
partners’ answers and to give them
feedback about the possible
mistakes and the right solution
It can be a game about the
language or the country
It can be a game about a
project topic
It can be a movement game
or…..what do you suggest?
What kind of game can
students create for their
partners?
Now it’s your turn.
Let’s play together with an example….
Are you ready?
It’s a GAME about my country.
Imagine we are partners in a project.
It’s a funny way to get to know each other.
Answer the questions….
1 2 3 GOOOOO!!!
Click on the link and play!!!!
http://goo.gl/forms/UCYFXAXpab
Another funny and motivating way to play with partners is
playing via videoconference…
skype…hangouts…
Visit the following page and you will see some examples
https://twinspace.etwinning.net/11200/pages/page/64072
So…do not cut out playing time in your students’ lives but
instead use games for learning purposes. Your pupils will
better in terms of
-expressivity
-creativity
-collaboration
-communication
-organization
-knowledge
-enterpreneurship
-competences in language, ICT, logic, maths, cultural
awareness,….
Let your students having fun and
have fun with them!!!
