Study the following sentences:
a. She was so upset, I felt extremely
sorry for her.
b. She’s really offended her sister.
c. I’m afraid, I’m not at all interested.
d. What on earth is he doing?
e. I strongly disagree.
f. It’s fairly interesting.
g. These students are rather noisy.
The underlined words are either
adverbs or adverbial phrases used
to strengthen the meaning of
other expressions and emphasize
them. Hence they are called
intensifiers.

Some commonly used intensifiers
include: “absolutely, completely,
extremely, highly, rather, really, so,
too, totally, utterly, very and at all”
We use ‘at all’ to give a negative
meaning.
We use ‘What on earth’ to suggest our
disapproval.
Why did I ever invite them to stay
with us? (suggests that there were
problems.)
