What is a phrase?
A phrase is a group of words that gives some
meaning.
What is a noun phrase?
A group of words that does the function of a noun is
called a noun phrase.
A noun phrase either takes the position of the
subject of a sentence or object of a sentence or
may followed by a participle.
1. She saw a bald middle-aged man walking in
through the gate.
In the underlined phrase all the words describe the
man who was walking through the gate.
Identify a few more noun phrases from the lesson.
 in his office car.
 a sudden unexpected visit.
 her eldest daughter.
Complete the sentences with noun phrases using
the words given in brackets.
I bought ___________ (beautiful/umbrella/red)
I bought a beautiful red umbrella.
We saw ____________ in the zoo.
(baby/a/elephants/of/couple)
We saw a couple of baby elephants in the zoo.
Our grandfather lives in _______ (big/house/a
/stone-built)
Our grandfather lives in a big stone-built house.
Ramya has __________ (nice/a/sari/silk)
Ramya has a nice silk sari.
Look at the sentences and observe the underlined
part in each sentence.
1. Kamala, her eldest daughter, a widow, got up
reluctantly.
2. Don’t you remember Vimala, District Collector
Nambiar’s eldest daughter?
The underlined part in the above sentence refers to
the noun that occurs before it, the underlined parts
are called Noun phrase in Apposition.
1. Don’t you remember, Vimala, District Collector
Nambiar’s eldest daughter?
In the underlined phrase all the words give some
extra information about Vimala.
1. Kamala, her eldest daughter got up reluctantly.
In the underlined phrase all the words give some
extra information about Kamala.
A noun phrase that is used to give some extra
information to a noun is called a noun phrase in
apposition.
Rewrite the following sentences using Noun Phrase
in Apposition.
Mahesh is my elder brother. He lives in Delhi.
Mahesh, my elder brother, lives in Delhi.
Sarojini Naidu is popularly known as the Nightingale
of India. She wrote many poems in English
