Day 1

2. Introduction
• Michelle Walsh – Tutor
• Course is 3 days 9:30am – 4pm
AIM – To learn what is required for receiving a
labouring CSCS card. To begin to develop awareness
of Working in Construction & Building Industries
3. Housekeeping
• COVID-19 specific information – Handwashing, social
distancing, sanitising equipment, masks
• Fire evacuation procedure
• Toilet location & use – 1 at a time – Lock door on way in
• Smoking – Away from the front door – Use cigarette bin
• Phone calls / mobile phones – On silent and to ONLY be
answered outside of the classroom, if necessary
• Waterside Code of Conduct – Groundrules
(Language whilst at the centre, use of computers,
timekeeping, under the influence of substances)
• Attendance – You need to be committed to attending on
time and for the full sessions
• Breaks – Room 3 is set up for socially distanced breaks

4. ALL - Explore and begin to submit responses for AIM Qualifications Skills for
Working in Construction and Building Industries – Section 1
5. SOME - Explore and begin to submit responses for AIM Qualifications Health
& Safety in a Construction Environment preparation – Section 2
6. Review progress against minimum expectation – What needs to be done to
ensure you can achieve? Section 1 is the minimum requirement for Day 1
Morning break = 10:30am – 10:45am
Lunch = 12:15pm – 12:45pm
Afternoon break = 2:30pm – 2:45pm
5. How this course works…
SECTION 1 of the course is;
AIM VOC - Skills for Working in Construction and Building Industries
It is;
An accredited qualification and relevant to the Construction Industry
(only fully funded for those who are unemployed, claiming an active
benefit, looking for work. Reduced cost for those working or not
claiming benefit)
It includes;
• Working in Construction & Building Industries – 4 modules
• Principles of Building Construction, Information and Communication–
7 modules
You will learn by;
Reading information, answering questions, match things up, gaining feedback
on correct and incorrect answers and then completing multiple choice short
tests at the end of each module to demonstrate your understanding.
6. How this course works…
SECTION 2 of the course is;
AIM Level 1 Health & Safety in Construction Modules
It is;
An accredited qualification, needed for anyone who doesn’t
have an NVQ Level 2 or above in a construction trade
It includes;
• 5 interactive modules and 1 sample end test
You will learn by;
Reading information, answering questions, match things up, gaining
feedback on correct and incorrect answers and then completing
multiple choice short tests at the end of each module to demonstrate
your understanding.
7. How this course works…
SECTION 3of the course is;
Preparation questions and information to provide examples of the variety of topics
to be asked in your test. Feedback to help you understand the requirements behind
the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Operatives Test.
It includes;
• 17 categories of practice questions, with learning content
• Multiple mock tests
• CITB Setting out video
You will learn by;
• Reading information and answering example questions based on a variety of
health and safety in construction topics so that you are familiar with what would
be expected of you on site and during the test
• Reviewing feedback from any incorrect responses
8. ExamsThere are 3 exams in total;
1. Section 1 - Exam for AIM Level 1 Extended Award in Skills for Working in
Construction and Building Industries (For funding purposes) (67% to pass each
module – 90 Q’s in total) – Instant result on screen – Day 2
2. Section 2 - Exam for AIM Level 1 in Health & Safety in a Construction
Environment (80% to pass – 40 Q’s) – Result available from tutor – Day 3
3. Section 3 - Exam for CITB Health, Safety and Environment Operative Test
50 questions in total – Pass mark is 45 out of 50 - 90% – Printed test results when you
leave the test room – Day 3
For each exam, full exam conditions apply – Formal
identification is required for the CITB test.
No phones, hats or personal belongings are allowed in
the room. Masks are to be worn apart from at exam
check-in on Day 3.
Lockers are provided and must be used.
9. CSCS Card
CSCS now require ALL construction workers to hold a UK qualification,
relevant to their trade and level of skills, as well as being able to pass the CITB
operative test. This change was made in October 2015.
If you already have a CONSTRUCTION related qualification at NVQ Level 2 and
above then we can order the correct card for you, once you have completed
the programme – You need to have evidence of this (certificate) and make
this clear at the start of the course.
The CSCS card takes approximately 3 weeks to be processed.
This will be sent directly to your registered address.
The card is valid for 5 years.
11. Online Enrolment
1. Switch the computer on (by pressing the button at the front of the
machine)
2. Press Ctrl on the keyboard or click the mouse to activate the log in screen
Please use the following details to login:
Username: waterside
Password: threebeforeme
Once you have logged in, please look at the icons on the desktop – There is an
icon for CSCS enrolment. Double click that and begin to fill out your details by
creating an account first and then complete the online enrolment form.
You also need to show proof of benefit – Please have this ready so I can
come and take a photo.
12. MOODLE - Step by step guide
Take a look through this to familiarise yourself…
1. Check page 1 for details on how to log on to Moodle
2. Ask me for your full username
3. Once logged in please look for the picture icon, top right.
Click the small arrow and then profile. You will see edit
profile in the middle of the page, please change the first
name and last name to your own. Do not change
anything else… scroll to the bottom and click update
4. Check the next few pages for steps about how to get to
on to the course and to Section 1 – This is where you will
start
13. Follow your guide…
Use the information in the guide to
show you what to click – Once you are
in Section 1, you can begin to work
through the modules – You are able to
keep a record of your scores on the
sheets at the back of the booklet

15. Expectations of Day 1
ALL of you will complete the AIM Level 1 Extended
Award in Skills for Working in Construction and
Building Industries and receive scores of 67% or
higher – Section 1
SOME of you will start the AIM Health & Safety in
Construction modules and receive scores of 83% or
higher – Section 2

18. What else is coming up?
Health & Safety in a Construction Environment
• These modules enable you to understand the principles of risk
assessment, safe manual handling, working at height and using
equipment, as well as the general health risks in a construction
environment. On completion, you will be able to demonstrate an
understanding of key issues affecting safe working practices on UK
construction sites.
• You will work through these independently, reading information,
answering questions and receiving feedback.
At the end of each module it will provide you with a percentage score and
feedback based on your answers.
It is important that you take notice of this feedback to help you learn and
record your scores so that you know which ones are complete and passed.

20. End of session review – How
are you doing?
• Have you achieved the minimum expectation for today?
ALL of you will complete the AIM Level 1 Extended Award in Skills for
Working in Construction and Building Industries and receive scores of
67% or higher – Section 1
SOME of you will start the AIM Health & Safety in Construction modules
and receive scores of 83% or higher – Section 2
• If you are not on track, what could you do to ensure you’re able to
achieve? Discuss this with me before leaving
21. End of session
Any questions?
• Shut down your computers - everything as it
is and it will be sanitised, ready for your
return on Day 2.
• Take your guide home with you, if you would
like to login – This would benefit those who
feel they need more time
• See you on Thursday morning – 9:30am

Above, is a picture of the CSCS card we will order, on successful completion of the programme. The qualification needed for this card is a Level 1 Award in Health & Safety in a Construction Environment, which you will take on Friday morning. This particular CSCS card allows you access to a site for labouring duties. If you have had a CSCS card before, let me know as this helps when registering your exams and applying for your new card.
