Mentioning the severity of the increasing level of sound pollution causing direct threat to the
public health, speakers on Wednesday stressed needs of taking collaborative and integrated
approach to mitigate contemporary pollution like noise.
They called for creating awareness among citizens about the severity of noise pollution and take
keep the level of noise low and to acceptable level to help public health free from sound
pollution for safety.
The Department of the Environment (DOE) observed the ‘International Noise Pollution Day
2016 to control noise pollution with collective and integrated programme in the country.
An awareness meeting on the issue was held in city’s Manik Mia Avenue Street with the
collaborative cooperation of 800 plus students, representatives from public and private sectors,
teachers, professionals and citizens from different level took part in the programme.
The Deputy Minister of Environment and Forest, Abdullah Al Islam Jakob, Director General of
Department of Environment, Md Raisul Alam Mondal, Secretary of Ministry of Environment
and Forest, Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Executive Director of Work for Better Bangladesh trust
(WBB) Saifuddin Ahmed, Deputy Programme Manager of WBB, Najnin Kabir, among others,
were present in the programme.
Speaking on the occasion Abdullah Al Islam Jakob stressed needs of awareness among citizens
and collaboration from them to make effective the noise pollution and control act 2006 in the
country.
“Government has under taken different initiatives to mitigate the noise pollution all over the
country. The citizens have to abide by the laws but their willing cooperation and practice of such
laws will help reduce noise pollution,” he said.
“Awareness needed among citizens only government alone can’t combat such pollution which
destruct lives directly,” he added.
2. “Causing excessive noise created by the urbanization, industrialization, transportations, daily
life-style are affecting the health of humans and impacting negatively the environment,” said Md
Raisul Alam Mondal.
According to them among different dimensions of pollutions, the noise pollution is in second
position in Dhaka and level of pollution has crossed the safe level of acceptance by human. High
level of noise pollution reduces hearing capacity, causing high blood pressure, distract the heart
beat rate, distort the digestive system as well develops stress in the muscles and hampers the
growth of the children. It can cause death also in extreme situation.
Heavy hydraulic horns used in the vehicles, rapid and unplanned urbanization, increase of motor
driven transports, unsafe construction work process and other industrial sources are affecting
people of the country and creating hazards with threats to public health, experts underscored.
Experts suggested the citizens and officials to be aware about noise pollution and help keep the
noise level low for the sake of public health.
