This extensive exposure enables the model to grasp syntax, semantics, common knowledge, and various patterns of language use. This creates the foundational model.

During fine-tuning the alignment with human values takes place too. This is done by means of a preference dataset (Essentially prompt samples with two answers, one better than the other). By processing these samples, the models “learns” to generalise our preferences.
