Question 3 evaluation
1. Question 3:
What kind of media institution might distribute your media
product and why?
Whilst researching into thriller films and planning my opening sequence, I looked into
the production and distribution companies overall, as well as looking at who catered
for specific thriller films.
Warner Bro’s is an American company that
produces film, music and TV entertainment. It is
one of the major film studios. This company has
several subsidiary companies such as Warner
Bros. Pictures, Warner Bros. Interactive
Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television, Warner
Bros. Animation, Warner Home Video, New Line
Cinema, Castle Rock Entertainment, and DC
Entertainment.
New Line Cinema is also an American distribution
company, founded in 1967. It later then became
an independent film studio. Then in 2008 it was
merged with Warner Bros. New Line Cinema
caters for much more of a wider audience as the
films they produce and distribute are both for
mainstream and niche audience’s.
The films above are all Thriller films by New Line Cinema.
2. Distributing my film opening
Due to my film being made by an unknown director and using
unknown actors, it doesn’t really have a unique selling point therefore
finding a big company to distribute it would be difficult. To start
distributing my media product myself, I would load it onto YouTube
and social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter as well as
submitting it to film festivals and holding showings at local cinema’s.
Showing my film through social media is a free way to gather my
target audience, as well as allowing anyone around the world to
watch it. Distributing my media product in local cinema’s and at film
festivals gathers a wider audience. Showcasing the film opening in all
of these ways will allow it to become more known, which will attract
the big distribution companies. These companies such as New Line
Cinema and Warner Bro’s will only distribute films with a big audience
as they are well known companies. If a big company distributed my
media product, not only would I get a bigger reaction from the
audience but the directors and actor’s would also become more
known which is where fan bases are created and then more directors
would want to include them in their media products.
