Malcolm Knowles (1980) popularized the concept of andragogy • Moves from dependency to increasing self directedness and can direct his/her own learning; • Draws on his/her accumulated reservoir of life experiences to aid learning; • Is ready to learn when he/she assumes new social or life roles; • Is problem-centered and wants to apply new learning immediately; and • Is motivated to learn by internal, rather than external, factors.

- Have participants watch the video and write down one question while-watching and then post-viewing. Choose a few participants to share their questions, and possible answers. Ask participants how this could be relevant to their teaching and/or professional development.
- I have been working with adult educators, both professional and volunteer in community based orgs, school systems, community colleges and now for the a state agency. I have worked with professional developers on working most effectively with instructors and faculty. The recurring themes have been the same year in and year out we need pd and continuous learning often feel isolated in the field we want time to get together and share ideas conferences are expensive and employers won’t/can’t support us we don’t have pay time or time to get together in or around teaching time we want to build a professional community of practice
- In our professional development we need to try to follow the same principles of adult learning theory as we do for our learners and how characteristics of adult learners align with traditional professional development Knowles' assumptions The need to know — adult learners need to know why they need to learn something before undertaking to learn it. Learner self-concept —adults need to be responsible for their own decisions and to be treated as capable of self-direction Role of learners' experience —adult learners have a variety of experiences of life which represent the richest resource for learning. These experiences are however imbued with bias and presupposition. Readiness to learn —adults are ready to learn those things they need to know in order to cope effectively with life situations. Orientation to learning —adults are motivated to learn to the extent that they perceive that it will help them perform tasks they confront in their life situations.

- It might be easiest to first think about resources in types: Collaborative and Gathering! Once you set this in play, taking advantage of all the resources mentioned in the video will be helpful. Let’s get started.
- Walk around and talk to at least 3 people about what they use the different applications for… if you like and they use things for purposes that might be helpful to you I would suggest connecting. To start creating your personal learning network. Note: How many followers/follows folks have for each app and how that expands you learning network ! Caveat: I keep certain applications personal and certain applications professional.
