December 13, 2010 Grammar: Understanding Verb Forms Writing: Compare and Contrast
Housekeeping Hand-in Vocabulary Paragraph using the words from “The Tell-Tale Heart.” Next class  First half:  I will assign a new short story and homework for the break Second half:  Party (food, music, games)
Understanding Verb Forms, Handout p. 69-71 Don’t get hung up on all the terminology! Focus on how the form of the verb changes in different situations. Endings may be added to the verb  ing and –ed Auxiliary (helping) verbs may be placed before the verb be, have, will
Understanding Verb Forms, p. 69-71 You can use the simple tenses in most general situations: She walks to work every day. (Simple present) She walkedto work yesterday. (Simple past) She will walk to work tomorrow. (Future)
Understanding Verb Forms, p. 69-71 Use the continuous (progressive) tenses when you want to show an ongoing or incomplete action: She is walkingto work right now. (Present Continuous) She was walkingto work when I saw her. (Past Continuous) She will be walkingto work from now on. (Future continuous)
Understanding Verb Forms, p. 69-71 Use the perfect tenses when you want to show completedactions: She has walkedto work many times, but usually she takes the bus. (Present perfect) She had walkedto work before he called to offer a ride. (Past perfect) She will have walkedto work by the time I can pick her up. (Future perfect)
A few more examples Gail has worked hard on the puzzle. (present perfect) They had finished the work before their shift ended. (past perfect) The volunteers will have worked many unpaid hours. (future perfect)
Understanding Verb Forms, p. 69-71 In writing, you will mostly use these three tenses: She walks.   (simple present) She walked.   (simple past) She has walked.  (present perfect)
Understanding Verb Forms, p. 69-71 Note:  Irregular verbs are formed differently, and you just have to learn these individually. She writes.   (simple present) She wrote.   (simple past) She haswritten.  (present perfect) If you need more practice with irregular verbs, you should study p. 454-462.
Exercise 3.2, p. 71(Handout – not text) Write the correct form of the verb for the blank.  More than one tense might be appropriate: Tanya brought [bring] her son along on the trip to the museum, and he behaved [behave] very well.
Exercise 3.2, p. 71 Write the correct form of the verb for the blank.  More than one tense might be appropriate: 2.	 Thomas saw [see] a skunk in the woods, but he avoided [avoid] it because his teacher had warned [warn] him about skunks.

Comparison  and Contrast If you have done an outline: Write a rough draft paragraph based on your outline. If you have not done an outline: Read p. 233-234. Follow the directions for Writing Assignment #1 until the bottom of p. 234.  Write an outline only.DO NOT WRITE A PARAGRAPH.   When you are done, show me your outline.
When your rough draft is complete Compare it to the “Four Bases Checklist” in the text.  Make any changes necessary to improve the paragraph Then, proofread your paragraph for the following: fragments run-ons subject-verb agreement correct use of articles correct use of prepositions clear pronoun reference pronoun agreement Finally, rewrite your paragraph on a clean sheet of paper.  Please double-space!!! Write your name on the top right-hand corner of your page. Hand in the outline, the rough draft, and the final draft (final draft on top) to me and then you are dismissed!  
Homework No homework!! Be sure to attend Wednesday’s class as we will be starting a new short story.

  • 2. Housekeeping Hand-in Vocabulary Paragraph using the words from “The Tell-Tale Heart.” Next class First half: I will assign a new short story and homework for the break Second half: Party (food, music, games)
  • 3. Understanding Verb Forms, Handout p. 69-71 Don’t get hung up on all the terminology! Focus on how the form of the verb changes in different situations. Endings may be added to the verb ing and –ed Auxiliary (helping) verbs may be placed before the verb be, have, will
  • 4. Understanding Verb Forms, p. 69-71 You can use the simple tenses in most general situations: She walks to work every day. (Simple present) She walkedto work yesterday. (Simple past) She will walk to work tomorrow. (Future)
  • 5. Understanding Verb Forms, p. 69-71 Use the continuous (progressive) tenses when you want to show an ongoing or incomplete action: She is walkingto work right now. (Present Continuous) She was walkingto work when I saw her. (Past Continuous) She will be walkingto work from now on. (Future continuous)
  • 6. Understanding Verb Forms, p. 69-71 Use the perfect tenses when you want to show completedactions: She has walkedto work many times, but usually she takes the bus. (Present perfect) She had walkedto work before he called to offer a ride. (Past perfect) She will have walkedto work by the time I can pick her up. (Future perfect)
  • 7. A few more examples Gail has worked hard on the puzzle. (present perfect) They had finished the work before their shift ended. (past perfect) The volunteers will have worked many unpaid hours. (future perfect)
  • 8. Understanding Verb Forms, p. 69-71 In writing, you will mostly use these three tenses: She walks. (simple present) She walked. (simple past) She has walked. (present perfect)
  • 9. Understanding Verb Forms, p. 69-71 Note: Irregular verbs are formed differently, and you just have to learn these individually. She writes. (simple present) She wrote. (simple past) She haswritten. (present perfect) If you need more practice with irregular verbs, you should study p. 454-462.
  • 10. Exercise 3.2, p. 71(Handout – not text) Write the correct form of the verb for the blank. More than one tense might be appropriate: Tanya brought [bring] her son along on the trip to the museum, and he behaved [behave] very well.

  • 16. Comparison and Contrast If you have done an outline: Write a rough draft paragraph based on your outline. If you have not done an outline: Read p. 233-234. Follow the directions for Writing Assignment #1 until the bottom of p. 234. Write an outline only.DO NOT WRITE A PARAGRAPH. When you are done, show me your outline.
  • 17. When your rough draft is complete Compare it to the “Four Bases Checklist” in the text. Make any changes necessary to improve the paragraph Then, proofread your paragraph for the following: fragments run-ons subject-verb agreement correct use of articles correct use of prepositions clear pronoun reference pronoun agreement Finally, rewrite your paragraph on a clean sheet of paper. Please double-space!!! Write your name on the top right-hand corner of your page. Hand in the outline, the rough draft, and the final draft (final draft on top) to me and then you are dismissed! 
  • 18. Homework No homework!! Be sure to attend Wednesday’s class as we will be starting a new short story.
