2. An atom is the smallest particle
which cannot be divided any
further.
Atoms derive from the Greek word
known as “A’tomos” which means
something that cannot be divided
any further.
Everything is made up of atoms.
Even things as thin as an aluminum
foil, has thousands of atoms.
3. An atom has three parts :-
Nucleus
Shell
Sub- atomic particles
Atom is made up of even smaller particles which I earlier
referred to as sub- atomic particles:-
Neutron: It has no charge and is found in the nucleus
Proton: It is positively charged and it is also found in the
nucleus
Electron: It is negatively charged and is found on the shells.
Because positive and negative energy react, electrons are
found in the shell and protons are found in the nucleus.
Neutrons have no charge and protons have positive charge
and they are both found inside the nucleus, so automatically
the nucleus’s charge becomes positive.
5. Some important keywords:-
Atomic mass unit: A unit of mass that describes
the mass of an atom or molecule
Proton: A subatomic particle that has a positive
charge and that is found in the nucleus of an
atom
Neutron: A sub atomic particle that has no charge
and that is found in the nucleus of an atom
Atomic number: The number of protons in the
nucleus of an atom; the atomic number is the
same for all atoms of an element
