The Message Behind The Laugh When people look at cartoons, most do not study the underlying
message, but simply find humor in the split second message they just read. Dating back to The
Golden Age, 1770–1830, a few men known as Townshend, Bunbury, Woodward, and Nixon,
transformed the art form, introducing a more playful style and a strong element of personal

are divided into sub–categories depending on their purpose, and the message the author is trying to
portray because each cartoon has a different goal the author is trying to achieve. In today's age, we
turn to expert Mort Gerberg to interpret the definition of cartoons and educate how cartoons are
utilized to express opinions using different tones. Gerberg is a professional cartoonist whose work
has appeared in publications such as The New Yorker, Playboy, Harvard Business Review, and The
Huffington Post (128). He has contributed to 43 books on the topic of cartooning during his career
and he wrote, "What Is a Cartoon," to argue that cartoons are rhetorical constructs using images and

Political Cartoons Another type of political comedy that is often undervalued today is political
cartoons. Prior to the television becoming a mainstream medium, political cartoons constituted the
majority of political comedy. This power stemmed from the fact that political cartoons were often
presented in print media, such as newspapers and magazines. As print media has fallen out of
demand, however, political cartoons ceded their position to late–night comedy shows. This is not to
suggest that political cartoons cannot exist in a TV–dominated society; rather, that a bit of its
availability and power has been transferred to other media. Political cartoons still exist and have
potential to alter viewers' perception of the current political climate. In fact, some argue that the
political cartoon has experienced a resurgence due to social media. One study phrased it like this:
"Shared on social media, these cartoons created an impression of "déjà vu", showing us the same

Not only do editorial cartoons still exist, their power has been augmented by the structure and nature

Ever since the rise of terrorism, millions of innocent civilians were forced to leave their homelands
for safety and peace. As newspapers and other media outlets expose numerous instances of
injustices suffered by the refugees to the public, people wonder: what can we do for refugees?
Michael Ramirez, an American cartoonist, gives his answer through his political cartoon "We need

The next example worth looking at is another cartoon by Bengough entitled "Renewing The Lease"
(See Fig.2). The context of this cartoon was that though John A. Macdonald had resigned, he
launched a new campaigning in the 1878 election with his signature policy platform, the 'National
Policy', which was centred on Protectionism (e.g. tariffs on American manufacturing goods) the

provide an opportunity to discuss the influence the press has in politics, not as representatives of

The background of this cartoon was that, despite the surmounting allegations of Ford's inappropriate
and potentially illegal activities, he maintained a considerably strong base of supporters known as
'Ford Nation'. Despite the size of Ford's political base, the cartoon attempts to satirize them for their
unwavering support. Indecently, the side of the cartoon they are placed on could very well be
interpreted as a subtle way of critiquing right–wing populists as a whole. With this in mind, the
couple on the left (in both senses of the word) would then represent what the cartoonist would

We have spent a semester studying the effects of globalization on the world and business from
currency exchange to trade policy. Through our discussions and readings, we have learned that
globalization is a boon to business as much as it is a curse. In business, strategic alliance agreements

Although they both exist within the context of society, government and business are two separate
entities which share a few features. Governments at even the most basic level exist to protect their

The Pulitzers have needed a hard reboot for some time. But now, the urgency is palpable. For too
many newspapers, the prize has become irrelevant as they struggle just to keep food in their
cupboards. And for the big boys, it's like shooting fish in a barrel. The Pulitzer board seemed to
have recognized the problem this year, handing prizes to an unusually large number of smaller

The State Library of New South Wales recently received a collection of original drawings by
contemporary Australian political cartoonist David Rowe. This collection, comprising 5,553
drawings in total, was donated by Rowe via the Cultural Gifts Program, a government initiative that
provides tax incentives for gifts of cultural significance. Before this donation can be acquired, it is
to be assessed by the Collection Management Committee to determine its suitability as a collection
item. The Committee will evaluate the collection based on its significance, as well as its relationship
to the Library's Collection Development Policy and other State Library of New South Wales'
collections. Despite this responsibility resting with the Committee, since the commencement of my

They are attempting to appeal to Logos, the logical side in the readers, and Pathos, the emotional
side or more specifically ability to empathize, respectively. Many cartoonists make satires and ironic
cartoons that are meant to bring something important to the artists into public knowledge, and some
just want to poke fun at some habits or traditions of other cultures and religion. However there are
those who take it too far, which is where Logos comes in. Most readers, at least the ones the
cartoons are not ridiculing, find it very easy to just laugh off an offensive joke, but as demonstrated
by Sacco, it's very easy to cross the line between a harmless, informative joke and a borderline cruel
mockery of something that is important or sacred to others. Pathos, on the other hand, is used to
appeal to the emotional side of readers by asking them to empathize with the Jews that have been
persecuted, as some believe, for simply been more successful during a time of high rates of

After the 2016 Presidential election, there have been a lot of controversies. Many political cartoons
have been created for a multitude of different issues that have been occurring within the White
House and in government. Chris Britt, a liberal cartoonist was inspired by these issues and created

unclear as to whether or not fictional media can convey meaning. When the word meaning is used in

Ideographs function to elicit emotion from the public through their association to common concepts
and their application to different societal issues. Words like "freedom" and "democracy" act as
ideographs in that they have certain connotations and that are then manipulated according to the
cultural situation. An ideograph as outlined by McGee has four critical characteristics: it is able to
warrant power or guide behavior; it is used in political discourse; it is an abstraction representing
collective commitment; and it is culture–bound (205–209). Janis L. Edwards and Carol K. Winkler
in their study "Representative Form and the Visual Ideograph: The Iwo Jima Image in Editorial
Cartoons" argue against Michael McGee's belief that ideographs are limited to verbal language
(198–212). They protest that visual images can also be used as ideographs because they fulfill
McGee's formulated features of an ideograph and are not merely icons, which are visual
representations of words that always symbolize the same concept or idea. The utilization of Mount
Rushmore in editorial cartoons functions as an example of a visual ideograph as distinguished by
Edwards and Winkler. Through an analysis of editorial cartoons with the Mount Rushmore image, I
will provide further evidence to Edwards's and Winkler's claim that visual images can exist as
ideographs by fulfilling the major characteristics of an ideograph as defined by McGee.

Attitude 2 is a cartoon done by Ted Rall that is poorly done. It is considered to be a bad comic by
the standards by the article The Art of the Funnies: An Aesthetic History by Robert C. Harvey. There
were many things that made this very poorly done. The first thing is the progression was not done
very well at all. Also the graphic variety of the cartoon was bad, showing small variety. Another
thing that was poorly done was the style of it, all seemed very similar. Lastly the main problem was
the balance of the cartoon, they all were very similar. The cartoon needed a lot more effort to make
it better. This is a cartoon that was very poorly done. One of the main things about this cartoon is the
progression, the fact that there is no progression. Progression is how time is depicted. Sequence of

was given there was no rhyme or reason for the panel placement, it was just random scenes put

Graduation Selfie Rhetorical Analysis
On graduation day, do you focus on being happy? Thinking that you are done and forgetting about
how much student debt you have? Nate Beeler, the artist of the cartoon "Graduation Selfie" captures
how that exciting day truly is. Beeler is an editorial cartoonist for the Columbus Dispatch. His work
has appeared in an abundance of news programs and other publications. Beeler has also won many
awards for his cartoons, such as the Fischetti award in 2014, and the Thomas Nast award in 2010

If the public noticed the issue in Flint earlier on the maybe one of the people that died due to the
Legionnaires' disease outbreak wouldn't have. If the public starts taking global warming seriously
maybe the future loss of life from superstorms will be prevented. Part of the reason why neither of

encapsulate complex political issues into a single picture make them highly valuable in discerning
the social and political climate of an era. Cartoonist Daniel Robert Fitzpatrick's work "You Can Stop
It In Poland, Can You, Adolf?" captured the American imagination of the German military machine
and its leader, Adolf Hitler.
This mechanical print debuted on September 10, 1939 in the St. Louis Dispatch, the major regional
newspaper in St. Louis, Missouri. Germany had invaded Poland just ten days earlier on September
1st. The cartoon depicted Hitler and a German officer riding a lightning bolt that read "Lightning
War." Fitzpatrick drew Hitler in his typical plain uniform but the cartoonist made the German officer
overweight and encumbered with medals, to the point where the speed of the lightning made some
fly off his body. These caricatures of Hitler and an elite Nazi officer represented what many

I chose to write about a cartoon from Times Magazine that focuses on Obesity in America by Joe
Heller. Obesity is a major issue that our country faces today. After analyzing this cartoon I wanted to
further my understandings to what it meant. In this article we see that the American Medical
Association (AMA) is a main variable. They stated that "moderately overweight people live longer".
That is a bold statement and what I want to know is does having extra body fat really allow you to
live longer? The Journal of the American Medical Association researchers say that being overweight
may lead a longer life. Their conclusion to this comes from detailed review from over 100 previous
published research papers that have joined body weight and morality. This confirms that obese
people (particularly those who are extremely obese) tend to die earlier than those who are at a

A Deeper Look into Indiana's Law Many thoughts should run through one's mind as they skim
through The Editorial Board of Terre Haute Tribune–Star's "It's time to expand Indiana's civil rights
law" editorial piece. This editorial presents many flaws that can be spotted with one read through.
The opinion piece is written with good intentions; however, The Board commits quite a few errors
in the delivery. Inconsistencies and appeals to an already sympathetic audience make it difficult for
this editorial to convince any skeptics to switch sides on the issues that are raised. While The Board
was obviously passionate about this writing, the editorial is not effective due to insufficient evidence
and only one viewpoint among other oversights. This piece tries to raise concerns about Indiana's
wellbeing and shortcomings that all relate back to one law, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act
(RFRA), which gives businesses the right to exercise their religious beliefs when running their
operations. Unsupported evidence is one of the major setbacks in this mission of The Board. It

Writer's statement
William Shakespeare's, Richard III explores the idea of power. It's shown how power corrupts and
controls characters throughout the play. There are many comparisons that could be drawn between
Richard III as Machiavellian leader as alluded to in the transformative piece. The main reason for
this is the extremes that Richard would go to, to assert himself in power. The transformative piece
aimed to explore how this influenced Richard's reception when elected into power. One of the main
motivations behind the characterisations of Richard in this transformative piece, is drawn from
when Richard announces in the original play, "And therefore, – since I cannot prove a lover, To
entertain these fair well–spoken days, –I am determined to prove a villain, And hate the idle
pleasures of these days." (1.1.??) From this quote the character of Richard had to be created to be
cruel with no regard for the things that make us human, this was done through how widely known
his behaviour is in the article. The Machiavellian idea is also drawn from Richard as he "cannot

incredibly determined, it acted as the driving hand behind many of Richard's brutal actions, because

In Gasoline Alley, Frank King uses closure to take an average human being, Skeezix, and place him
into a surreal world, and in doing so immerses his readers in the fantastic wonderlands they observe.
In The Superman Chronicles, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster do the opposite by using closure to take a
surreal being and place him into the real world of the readers to show how alien Superman is to
planet Earth. For clarity, closure is defined in Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics as,
"Observing the parts but perceiving the whole." Simply put, closure in comics allows the reader to
become an active participant in the story. This participation allows the reader to become fully
immersed in the world of the characters which leads to an experiential connection between the
reader and the character. In order to understand how real and surreal are to be interpreted in this
paper, they must be defined. The Merriam–Webster Dictionary defines surreal as, "marked by the
intense irrational reality of a dream," and defines real as, "not artificial, fraudulent, or
illusory...occurring or existing in actuality." The creators devise diametric plots, but the use of
closure as a mechanism to create the immersive worlds in which their readers and characters coexist

civilization when people communicate complicated ideas and emotions used to create pieces. Art
changes with society. In Egyptian times, they built pyramids that were like monuments and had their
own artistic style that was represented by hieroglyphics and human figures made of stone. This was
the Egyptians mark in time. In our modern–day society, we have buildings, paintings, and statues
that all represent the present. Things like politics or natural disasters happening to us currently can
help art flourish with expression towards these things. We have political cartoons being created to
show the outrage within the political world. There are pieces that make history and remind us of
something devastating like a hurricane or earthquake that destroyed cities and took lives. I think art

The government official describes the literal bridge they the government is trying to build to solve
the problem. In the cartoon, members of the audience comment on how the problem is bigger than
they thought and how a solution will not be found easily. The cartoon was created eleven years ago.
The digital divide is the advantage people in certain countries receive since they have access to
digital technological and digital communication. This puts others in different countries at a
disadvantage when they do not have access to this technology. North America has access to an
abundance of technology that other countries do not have. Poorer nations do not have access to
these tools. The cartoonist has created irony in the fact that the government does not understand how

themselves creatively. The cartoons are not only meant to express the view of the creator but are
also open to interpretation. Most political cartoons have a biased point of view and uses rhetoric to
persuade its audience.

The tensions that developed between Cuba and the USA almost led to a nuclear disaster during the
Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Tensions between these two countries brought about the perfect
conditions for a nuclear confrontation between the USA and Soviet Union; occurring as a result of
