Put simply, Newtonβs Second Law of Motion
means:
Pushing or pulling an object produces
acceleration - a change in the speed of motion.
You might see how this could be important for
designing a rocket car!
The equation is also quite simple:
Force = Mass x Acceleration (π = ππ)
You can use the magic formula triangle to
re-arrange it to work out mass or acceleration.
πΉππππ = πππ π π₯ π΄ππππππππ‘πππ
πππ π =
πΉππππ
π΄ππππππππ‘πππ
π΄ππππππππ‘πππ =
πΉππππ
πππ π
3. ROCKET MATHS: Newtonβs 2nd Law
We have worked out that:
π΄ππππππππ‘πππ =
πΉππππ
πππ π
We can now predict what might
happen to our rocket car if we
change its mass.
NOTE: The rocket force is always
the same. (β 11 newtons)
This team have used carbon fibre axles instead
of steel and reduced the total mass of their car
from 42g to 34g⦠around 20%!
Look at the equation. What might this change
of mass mean for the acceleration of their car?
