Allusion In Away By Michael Gow
Michael Gow's Away is a stage play about three socioeconomically varied families and their
different holiday experiences. Throughout the play, Gow alludes to many of Shakespeare's texts to
deepen the audiences' understanding of the performance. Distinct connections are shown between
Gow's Away and Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Tempest and King Lear. These
references feature through direct use of lines, characters, theatrical conventions and themes. This
essay will explore each of these methods of allusion and explain how this use of intertextuality
heightens audience comprehension. The first of the techniques Gow used throughout Away was the
use of direct quotes from the Shakespearian plays, A Midsummer Night's Dream and King Lear. The
quote "If we shadows have offended/ Think but this and all is mended/ You have but slumbered
here" spoken in Away by Tom (Away: Act 1, Scene 1/ A Midsummer Night's Dream: Act 5, Scene
1), suggests ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many kinds of love are displayed within Away, including parental love, matrimonial love and
teenage infatuation. All of these kinds of love are also displayed in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Examples of each kind include: Gwen and Meg/Titania and Indian Boy displaying parental love,
Coral and Roy/Hermia and Demitrius displaying matrimonial love, and an infatuation is displayed
between Meg and Tom/Bottom and Titania. The use of many kinds of love allows stronger
connections between kinds of characters to be made, gaining depth of understanding through the
relationship between Gow's and Shakespeare's works. Destruction is the other outstanding common
theme displaying clear intertextuality. The use of a storm in Away allows the audience to make the
connection to Shakespeare's King Lear, in which the characters face environmental adversity as well
as the adversities of others. This enhances the audiences' awareness of social tensions throughout

Compare Relationships Between Romeo and Juliet and Between...
In Two of Shakespeare's most noted plays Romeo and Juliet and Othello Shakespeare explores the
essence of tragedy. How regardless of what measures they take my the nature of the play both
relationships are doomed before they flourish, The extent in witch obsession clouds the minds of the
luckless heroes and by what extent the women seem to be more in control of the men than the other
way round.
In the plays 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Othello' by William Shakespeare, Shakespeare uses the concept
of a tragic hero to create two characters who by the nature of a tragedy are doomed to fail in their
relationships and endeavors. They conform to the basic archetype of tragic hero by; being male,
women being seen a lesser beings in Shakespearian ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Othello in turn has no control over his race and the insecurity's that stem from living in a society that
openly discriminate against him Modern audiences would be able to sympathies with this as racism
is a ongoing thing even in modern times Yet Shakespearian viewers would more than likely see him
in some sort of demonic entity enticing the pure White Women and deserving of his downfall.
Romeo and Othello are both victims of the plays in which they reside being classic tragic heroes on
which the foundation of a tragic hero is built Timeless as they are both plays are relevant to the
Shakespearian and Modern Era and will continue to be so .
Shakespeare uses the idea of obesession to bring out and develop the flaws of both Romeo and
Othello In "Romeo and Juliet" and Othello repectivly. Romeo obessesd with love inwitting gives up
his masculinaty to with the one he by the choice of fate desires "a pair of star crossed lovers take

deaths of the lovers. however the rich imagery is used well enough by Shakespeare that the audience
cannot help but hope that fate will be thwarted fate rather than being personified is given power and
substance through cosmic imagery Shakespeare also used every form of light and dark imagery

Symbolism In Shakespearian Sonnet
We can find three major character in Shakespearian sonnet. The fair youth, the dark lady and the
poet himself. From sonnets 127–152 Shakespeare mention the dark. Though there is no specific
identity of the dark lady. Some critics said that maybe dark lady's name was Lucy Nego, or Mary
Fitton, or maybe Emilia Lanier. From sonnet 78–86 represents directly poet himself. In sonnet
129,135 & 136, Shakespeare strongly allude the relationship of Shakespeare with the dark lady. But
the relationship has no approval of the society.

King Lear: Egg-as-crown Metonymy
In metonymy... the literal term for one thing is applied to another with which it has become closely
associated because of a recurrent relationship in common experience. Thus "the crown" or the
scepter can be used to stand in for a king. (Abrams' Glossary of Literary Terms, 98)
In the play King Lear by William Shakespeare, the Fool compares King Lear's Crown to an egg.
Shakespeare's use of metonymy to replace the crown with an egg implies that Lear's kingship is
fragile and brittle, on the verge of breaking at any moment. We find through the narrative of the play
that this is indeed true; King Lear's kingdom crumbles due to his foolish mistakes. King Lear's first
mistake of laziness and selfishness leads to the banishment of ... Show more content on

Then let fall your horrible please,
(III, ii, 15–20)
In this quote, Lear voices that he never treated his daughters with unkindness during his Kingship,
and believes he does not deserve the treatment he is receiving. Lear's life is filled with deceit and
bad things are to come. "Canst thou blame him? /His daughters seek his death." (III, iv, 165–166)
says Gloucester. The kingdom loses its foundation as Lear's authority slips away.
The second crack occurs when Lear loses his sanity. He loses his mind when he discovers his
daughters' betrayal and realizes the mistake he made in banishing his only true and loyal daughter.
The disgraced king appears in Act IV, Scene vi with a "crown" of wildflowers on his head. The
impromptu crown depicts King Lear's mental state, "I would not be thee, Nuncle: thou hast pared
they wit o'both sides and left nothing I'th'middle." (I, iv, 190–193). Not only does this quote
demonstrates Lears lack of sanity, but explains the scene of the quote and correlation to the flower

England. The egg, and King Lear finally shatter in half when Lear discovers that Cordelia is

The Wise Fool in King Lear
Whether or not the role of the Fool is an important one within King Lear is arguable. Although he
seems to have great insight into much of the plays main events, he seems not to have any real
influence on both the plot as well as the outcome of the play. He remains the sole character who
does not have any direct link with the events of the plot, coupled with an unusually early exit; this
raises the question of his significance. However at the very least he does certainly serve as
entertainment not only for Lear but the audience as well, with his honesty, wittiness, and clever
speeches that not only adds to the light humour but also to show us that the Fool could indeed be
perceived as being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, we can see that when the Fool becomes too close to the raw truth Lear will warn him that
he will be whipped if he goes too far. When Lear first warns him with it, he replies:
"Truth's a dog, that must to kennel: he must be whipped out, when the Lady Brach may stand by the
fire and stink."
Here the Fool warns Lear that his two daughters will have control over him due to his actions.
Although Lear doesn't want to hear the truth and therefore tries to avoid it, the Fool essentially
forces it out into the open through his speeches. He often uses comedic verses of saying to highlight
the point he is trying to put across. In addition to this, he also provides various rhymes and riddles,
taking on the role of a Chorus as a means of discussing the plays actions in a light–hearted yet
clearly stating the essence of what is happening. For example, the following quotation sees the Fool
referring to Lear's actions concerning Cordelia:
...That man makes his toe
What he his heart should make,
Shall of a corn cry woe
And turn his sleep to wake"
He refers to the way in which people may drive away those who they should love due to misplaced
affection and that this will ultimately cause a person much grief and sleeplessness. This refers to the
way he reacted when Cordelia failed to flatter him in his `love–test.' This suggest the Fool to be
quite wise to point this out, however it may be too

William Shakespeare 's The Tempest
Shakespeare's plays are divided into two categories; tragedy and comedy. Though most of
Shakespearian plays are tragedies, Shakespeare was also a magician in writing comedies. The
Tempest is one of the most popular Shakespearian comedies. Both tragedies and comedies of
Shakespeare deal with the struggle and the conflict of the protagonist and other characters with the
external environment. The characters of the tragedies have to be overwhelmed while the characters
of comedies achieve triumph and succeed in the end. The Tempest has all the attribute of a typical
Shakespearian comedy. The paper aims to analyze the attributes of Shakespearian comedies found in

The second part of the plot also introduces some major characters such as Ariel, a captive servant of
Prospero. Other active characters in this part are Alonso, Sebastian, Antonio, Gonzalo, and
Ferdinand. The complications remain in this part with the development of the sub–plot of the
alliance among Stephano, Trinculo and Caliban. Shakespeare uses comedy while handling this
subplot. The third part is full of crisis and climax where Prospero prepares magic banquet for his
enemies. The forth part is called a resolution in which the audiences are introduced about the
marriage contract of Miranda and Ferdinand. Ariel appears in the scene with the news with the
failure of Caliban plot. The final stage of the plot is the conclusion. In this part, Alonso came to
know that his son is alive and he is in love with Prospero's daughter. Prospero gets back his
dukedom and the play ends with forgiveness. The number of characters has made the plot more
complex. Shakespearian comedies have some common characteristics which are found in The
Tempest. The first characteristic of Shakespearian comedy is that there is a struggle of young lovers.
They have to go through many adversaries to achieve their love. Miranda is a passive character and
Ferdinand is also not the hero of the play. But they are the important couple of the play. Miranda is
shown as a meek lady who is very faithful to her love when she says, "I am your wife, if you will

William Shakespeare is known worldwide as the greatest author, playwright, and poet ever in the
English language. His plays are acted out worldwide. Literary devices and words the Shakespeare
used have sculpted the English language. Many schools and colleges require that students read his
novels. Despite all this, parts of his life are shrouded in mystery. Although many people believe that
Shakespeare wrote his all his masterpieces, some people suspect that Sir Francis Bacon, Edward de
Vere, or Christopher Marlowe used Shakespeare as a mask to secretly publish their own works. Sir
Francis Bacon is one of the proposed candidates as the real mastermind behind all the Shakespearian
creations. Queen Elizabeth knighted him for his intelligence

Why Is Shakespeare Relevant Today
Shakespeare is arguably the greatest playwriter that has lived and although he died more than four
hundred years ago he is able to live on through his plays and poems that continue to be performed
today. Shakespeare has a universal reach with his plays and works intended for any audience that are
entertaining but also include important lessons. There are arguments that his relevancy is no longer,
but perhaps with evidence provided people will be able to see his works are more relevant now than
ever. Without further study and only taking a Shakespearian play for face value there are already
characteristics that make his works so timeless. The setting, stories, and characters all seem familiar
when they are watched and sometimes the characters seem to reflect one's self. The story of Romeo
and Juliet, for example, is one of love and passion for two star crossed lovers who desire nothing
more than to be together. For some this may be an over romanticised fantasy, but others ... Show

More than that is the language he uses as well as the words and phrases he created that are still being
used today. Studying Shakespearian works is not only about analyzing story elements or archetypal
patterns but also learning where language that is being used comes from. A history class teaches
students how people got to Canada and what historical events have affected the way life is today. In
a very similar way the study of Shakespeare is a history lesson on literature and vocabulary. Rather
than teaching how Canadian culture was developed it is teaching how the English language was
further developed. For some students there might be a feeling of disheartenment or hot–bloodedness
when they arrive at the realization that these eventful plays must continue being studied but, in order
to understand the language they use that Shakespeare created they must look at how it is used and
where these terms came

Examples Of Shakesspearian Tragedy Othello
As with all of Shakespearian Tragedies, Othello starts as an honorable man who turns into a monster
as the story progresses. Othello was a classic and well known example of a Shakespearian tragedy.
Othello was a tragedy because, like Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and many other of his renowned
tragedies, the protagonist suffers from a fatal flaw which leads to their ultimate and unfortunate
downfall. The main character is also usually a person of great power, wealth, and influence who
then falls into absolute chaos, such was that of Othello in the Shakespearian tragedy. Another
important part of Shakespearian tragedy is the antagonist Iago, who leads Othello down the dark
path and ultimately ruins him. Together these all combine to make Othello's life a very tragic one
and mark Shakespeare's play as a tragedy.
Othello is a true tragic hero, and his demise is caused by his fatal flaw; jealousy. "Tragedy depicts
the downfall of a noble hero or heroine, usually through some combination of hubris, fate, and the
will of the gods." (www.ohio.edu/) Othello was considered a noble hero until Iago leads him to
believe that his wife Desdemona was cheating on him with his lieutenant, Cassio. Othello became

Much to Do with Deception
"Much To Do With Deception" A Critical Research Paper about William Shakespeare's Much Ado
About Nothing Much Ado About Nothing, written by William Shakespeare, is a dramatic production
that uses the tools of deception and humor under the category of comedy. As defined by Paul N.
Siegel, "A comic play is usually accepted to be a light–hearted play with a happy conclusion." Yet,
Shakespearian tragic plays often use deception as a method to damage the role of the hero. In other
Shakespearian tragedies like Othello and Richard III, deception is one of the main tools used to gain
a victory over the hero. A Shakespearian tragedy is defined to be a hero afflicted with moral or

Champion speaks of the evolution of this mature romantic comedy and describes this scene as
"transformational deception". Much Ado About Nothing begins to place drama and intrigue into
comedy while developing the characters with plot and purpose. Beatrice finally uncovers her truth
through the "dramatic interruption of deception". Robert G. Hunter labels Much Ado About Nothing
as a "Comedy of Forgiveness" and notes that Beatrice quickly changed her feelings (shows
forgiveness) toward Benedick once deception gave her the push she needed to accept him. This
mature comedy resembles tragedy in that it is supplied with a role character's intervention as a guide
to the plot. The most shocking act of deception in Much Ado About Nothing was done to Claudio
and Hero. Meredith Anne Skura mentions the utilization of what is known as "stock characters" in
comedic plays. These are normally young boys with their female partners. Our stock characters in
this play are Hero and Claudio. The two of them, unlike Beatrice and Benedick, begin their
relationship immediately. The deception begins when Borachio finds out about Don Pedro's plan to
influence Hero for Claudio cause. At the party, Borachio and Don John bump into Claudio and try to
make him think that Don Pedro is only enticing Hero for himself: "Signor, you are very near my

Research Paper On The Globe Theatre
The Globe Theatre was one of the most famous theaters of all time. It was famous for being the
main location of many Shakespearian plays, for having a unique architectural layout from other
buildings, and for being a main attraction for many people during the Elizabethan Era and the
Modern Era.
The Globe theatre was built in 1599 and is very famous for having a unique architectural layout that
was different from other buildings during the time period. It was built from oak, deal, and stolen
playhouse frames. It is a large circular structure that is three stories tall and has a straw covered roof.
It looks similar to what a football stadium looks like today because the middle of the theatre is open.
The Globe theatre was built to hold about 3,000 people. Construction of the theatre was started by
Cuthbert Burbage because the lease on an older theatre had expired. The location of the Globe
Theatre was not actually in the central part of London but rather in an outlying district called
Southwark on the Thames River.
The Globe Theatre was the main spot where Shakespearian plays were performed during the
Elizabethan Era. The first play that is known to be shown in the Globe Theatre was Julius Caesar in

were expected to behave in a passive manner, how the men's opinion was accepted over the females
and how women had to conform to men. The over–arching idea of the ideal female was that she was
passive and was accepting of her role in society. This theme is explored throughout the entirety of
the play but is highly demonstrated in Act one scene one of the play. In this scene the Audience is

Hero replies "I talk'd with no man at that hour, my lord". The use of repetition in Claudio's language
makes the situation appear direr. The repeated use of the word 'men' expresses the hatred Claudio is
feeling at that present time. Claudio is comparing Hero to a rotten orange. He is trying to suggest
that she may seem innocent and the 'ideal women' from the outside but on the inside she is disloyal.
The language and the way Claudio expressed his hatred and the fact that Claudio is the dominant

romance in Shakespeare's day, the other a not so average romance. Beatrice and Benedick's history

This all happens in the first scene, so their relationship is established from the beginning.
Hero and Claudio's relationship gets established near the beginning as well. However, this one is
much more simple. Claudio comments on how the world cannot buy a jewel as great as Hero, and
after Don Pedro woos her for him they are set to get married, without any serious problems.
The two main relationships the play focuses on are now set, and the two audiences have different
views on them. For an audience today to see Hero and Claudio decide to get married so simply
would be boring. However, a Shakespearian audience would see this relationship as ordinary, and
not be bothered that it was so simple. Although Beatrice and Benedick are not yet shown as in love,
a Shakespearian audience would not have thought it usual for a woman like Beatrice to be speaking
as she was about Benedick. However, today it is perfectly normal for Beatrice to be talking like she
is, so at the moment, the two relationships are more satisfying to the different audiences.

Julius Caesar and Other Shakespearian Tragedies
Shakespearian tragedies usually have a well–defined tragic hero. According to Aristotle, a Greek
philosopher, a tragic hero is a character of high rank and nobility, exhibits a tragic flaw, and
recognizes how his actions led to his eventual downfall. William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of
Julius Caesar incited a century old argument over who really deserves the title of "The Tragic Hero."
Many argue that Caesar is the tragic hero. However, I believe that Brutus should hold the title of
"tragic hero" because he is a noble and respected man, he holds tragic flaw of poor judgment. But
most importantly, what separates him from Caesar, is that he recognizes how these flaws and his
decision to murder his leader resulted in his own demise.
To accomplish their plan, the conspirators needed a noble man of high stature to justify their actions.
The best man for the job was Brutus. Brutus was Caesar's best friend, loved by the people, and he
loved the people back. Therefore, it only made sense for the conspirators to recruit Brutus
guarantees the support of the Roman people. Cassius admits this too, "Brutus shall lead, and we will
grace his heels / With the most boldest and best hearts of Rome" (3.1.135–136). Cassius himself
says that Brutus's credibility will lead to the success of the plan. If Brutus leads the way, then the

King Lear : A Shakespearean Shakespearian Tragedy
The play King Lear is what is known as a Shakespearian tragedy. All that this means is that it was
written by Shakespeare, possibly one of the most famous playwrights in history, and that the play is
considered to fit into the category of a tragedy. A tragedy can be simply described as a play with an
unhappy ending. Shakespeare wrote a number of tragedies, and readers of the plays debate which
tragedies were the best. King Lear is certainly a well–known tragedy, but should it be counted as
one of the best? Should it be considered one of Shakespeare's four greatest tragedies? Many people
do regard it as one of the best Shakespeare tragedies, but it generally comes down to opinion. In
order to determine the best Shakespeare tragedy, it has to be stacked up against other well–known
Shakespearian tragedies like Macbeth, Othello, Julius Caesar, Romeo and Juliet, Antony and
Cleopatra, and Hamlet in multiple ways, both objectively and subjectively. When compared to these
plays, it is evident that King Lear should not be counted as one of the top four Shakespearian
tragedies on account of three things, its popularity in relation to the other tragedies, its character
development in relation to the other tragedies, and the clarity of its overall message compared to the
other tragedies. This is not to say that King Lear is a poorly written play, just that although it is great
in its own right, it does not deserve to be in the top four Shakespearian tragedies of all time list;

Comparing Differnet Acts of Shakespearian Plays: Romeo and...
Similarity is all around us in our everyday lives. In every class we take things are compared to one
another. Many times people are quoted as saying, "Everyone is different that's what makes us the
same." This is a very powerful quote that shows in exact context that similarities are all around us.
People we meet, books we read, even the days we live all of very clear and common similarities
within them. In the texts of Romeo and Juliet and Midsummer Night's Dream they both were written
by William Shakespeare and they both have lovers. Even though they have these similarities the
things that will be focused on comparing are Acts 1–3 in Romeo and Juliet and Midsummer Night's
Dream.

One of the only things that are similar in both Act 2 is that one event in each of them will
completely turn the play upside down. This is clearly shown in Act 2, scene 6, line 37 when the Friar
says, " Till holy church incorporate two in one. " This event of Romeo and Juliet getting married
will both cause the deaths of them both, and the deaths of many others. Also in Act 2, scene 2, Puck
Oberon's mischievous assistant says this, " When thou wak'st let love forbid." This line in MSND is
where Puck has just put the juice of the flower into Lysander's eye. Both of these scenes have just
destroyed the regular parts of the play and flipped it upside down.
The third and final comparison of the plays is Act 3. Act 3 of these plays is also very different.
Romeo and Juliet have just been married when Romeo's friend Mercutio is killed Romeo kills his
killer. Then Romeo is banished and Romeo has a night with Juliet. On the other hand in MSND the
third act contains Puck making the Queen and Lysander love something they don't. Both Act 3s of
the plays do have another part of them where they are completely turned around and things go from
bad to worse. This is very well shown in Act 3, scene 1, lines 185–186 when the prince says, " And
for that offense immediately we do exile him hence. " The line for MSND is in Act 3, scene 1, when
Titania wakes up and says, " Be kind

Shakespeare's Use of Language, Imagery and Setting to Illuminate Prospero's Journey from

The Tempest opens on 'a ship at sea' caught in 'a tempestuous storm'. This setting would
immediately suggest to the Elizabethan audience, the presence of danger and evil, as they would be
familiar with other Shakespearian plays where storms have been used in this way, for example,
Macbeth and King Lear. The desperate language of the characters in the opening scene would
further reinforce the audience's sense of evil afoot. The panic of the Boatswain is illustrated when he

many new lands and cultures were being discovered. These places were surrounded by myth,
superstition and fear of the unknown. The exchange between Miranda and her father Prospero
establishes that this is no ordinary island or plot. Miranda's opening speech suggests that her father
has magical powers, 'if by your Art, my dearest father, you have put the wild waters in this roar,
allay them'. This suggestion that Prospero was responsible for the storm further reinforces the idea
introduced in the previous scene, that he is out for revenge, although the reason for his desire for
revenge is not clear at this point. The island's setting evokes ideas of magic and strange happenings
and suggests to the audience that anything can happen. Miranda's language contains much dark
imagery, which adds to the air of foreboding. Her statement that the sky 'would pour down stinking
pitch' has unnatural overtones, suggesting that this was no normal storm.

Dear Shakespearian Partisan Theatre Company Analysis
Dear Shakespearian Partisan Theatre Company, 'Tis the season of war, heroism, and honor for the
country of England and its King. This will come at a cost; the cost of thousands of innocent lives.
However, who's the one responsible for all the bloodshed of the thousands of citizens slaughtered in
another country? It would be an honor to carry out Shakespeare's initial ideas to its full capacity, but
I cannot fulfill this deed without the support from your company. With your money, cast, and

Baz Luhrmann's adaptation is perfect for teens to learn about Romeo and Juliet as there is no prior
knowledge of the play required as the film foregrounds everything. However a fair amount of prior
knowledge is required for Taylor Swift's version as it doesn't provide the same as Baz's adaptation.
Luhrmann's version foregrounds all the same themes as the original, romance, fate, love, death, love
conquers all, fighting, the forcefulness of love, revenge, love as cause of violence and the
inevitability of fate nothing like 'Love Story which only focuses on romance, love and compassion.
Another point that Taylor Swifts version doesn't foreground is the use of Shakespearian language on
the other hand Luhrmann's adaptation dialogue comprises of the Shakespearian language. A said
before that the original Romeo and Juliet was not formally intended for teenagers but Baz's remake
undoubtedly is, it targets manly older teenagers by involving love, romance, sex, drugs and alcohol
which teens are interested in. In contrast to 'Love Story' which is manly targeted at young girls in
their early teen years. All the themes throughout both 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Love Story' are
relevant to the modern audience as they are still involved in normal everyday life, love, fate, death
and romance are part of everyone's

Artistic creations can be a means for the exploration of human attitudes, feelings and behaviors. The
performing arts are an example of an artistic media that can be utilized in this way. For example, the
use of theatre and film can be applied as way to explore some of the human attitudes, feelings and
behaviors that are related to topics such as tolerance, acceptance, anger, hatred and also forgiveness.
Two such performing arts examples are The Laramie Project and Shakespeare as presented in the

anger and hatred, he was beginning the process of healing. Regarding the SHU Shakespearian

the SHU determined that Hamlet, when faced with the choice to revenge or not, must choose the

One of the stolen objects is a victrola, along with a few records. The fairies float the records in the
water and put garlands around the flower horn of the victrola. A similar instance is when Puck

him. Later, the bicycle takes the place of the creature that he rode in the beginning of the film, and
he rides it around the world. The nobles represent an aristocracy that no longer exists today as it

The Fool In King Lear Essay
In King Lear, the Fool is a very interesting character because he is ironic. In a kingdom, a fool is a
clown or jester who is ignorant and makes everybody laugh with his actions. However, in the play,
this character is very smart and gives important and intelligent advice to King Lear. In this quote the
fool makes a very accurate prediction, and William Shakespeare shows the themes of chaos and
nothingness through the prognostication. This character predicted that when the King's ungrateful
and sadistic daughters, Goneril and Regan, get his land, turmoil will follow. He also stated that the
king will have nothing after they start ruling, not even their love. After the two new queens began to

The quote relates to the authors purpose by showing how England, at the time of Shakespeare, was
degrading because of the wars it endured, and the corrupt monarchy. The author conveyed the
message that rulers only care about being wealthy and having glory, and that they do not care for the
situation of their people. The literary device in this quote is an allusion toward the famous wizard
Merlin in the Arthurian legends. The effect of the literary device on the narrative is that it
strengthens the two themes. The allusion to Merlin means that when England does indeed fall into
disarray and is in dire need, their own personal King Arthur will come and save them from the mess.
The allusion made this quote have a humungous impact because it emphasized the point that
England needs to be saved, and that one day King Arthur will return to save it like Merlin predicted,
but the fool predicted it first. The Great Chain of Being relates to this quote because the King is
supposed to be above all people, and his subjects need to respect him. As a father, he is also the head
of his family while his daughters are below him, and need to love and adore him. However, when he
gave up his power and land, his kids occupied his spot on the top, and King Lear lowered

Romeo And Juliet Comparison
Romeo and Juliet People repeatedly comment that William Shakespeare was and still is a legend. It
is amazing how Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet written centuries ago can be better than any
movie productions of Romeo and Juliet, which had much better technology to work with. Although
the films appeared more alluring and may be slightly easier to follow, they left out some major parts.
The play had better plot details and the original Shakespearian language which made it much more
interesting and by far a better representation of the story. This essay will prove why the original play
should be taught to English students over all film versions. One major difference between the play
script and the movie occurs in the plot. An example of this is in the beginning in the marriage scene
where Romeo and Juliet privately get married by Friar. In the play, Romeo and Juliet both come
across as acting very seriously, you can tell this by the language the two use. In 'Act 2, Scene 6'
Romeo says that "the Holy Words the Friar speaks can make something without an equal" which for
a young man is a very intellectual thing to say. In the same scene in each movie version Romeo and
Juliet flirt and chuckle during the entire process. This leads the viewers to believe that two lacked
maturity which is a completely different to what Shakespeare originally wanted to portray, instead it
portrays that they could not do anything the way it is normally done because they are children in

In Shakespearian plays, women were shown as the victims of men and also, women were described
as calm. Women were oppressed by men. Men were shown as violent and aggressive. "Good Night

Some people think that Shakespearian text should be taught in school because of the historic, while
others like myself think that Shakespeare should not be taught because in today society, people do

Shakespeare texts should not been taught in high school is other text with different cultural

Creative Elements In Julie Taymor's The Tempest

directors Geoff Elliot and Julia Rodriguez–Elliot attempt to turn this classic Shakespearian tragedy

aside from providing entertainment, this television series is significant in a multitude of other ways.
One of which is to reflect a pessimistic view on American politics. While Bill Clinton asserted
humorously that "99% of House of cards is accurate, the 1% that's not accurate is that you can never

face the same fate in the following season, similar to how Shakespearian anti–heroes such as

discouraging politicians from misconduct. Audiences will also have a sense of justice as this

Essay On Women's Rights In American Time
The Rights of Women in Shakespearian Time Verses Rights of Women Currently
Since Shakespearian time to the present, there has been a dramatic change in the expectations of
what women are supposed to do. In many different ways, women have started to be expected to do
quite a bit more. In terms of family management and overall authority within the family, as well
with expectations of what they are allowed to do outside the house. Since Shakespeare's time there
has been quite a few things concerning women's rights that have happened, in fact several hundred
years have passed, and a lot has changed in the world. For example, as it currently stands in the
United States of America, it is possible for a woman to become leader of our country, and several
others countries as well. Whereas in Shakespeare's time, Most countries were lead by a king, and the
thought of a woman being in charge of anything other than cooking and cleaning was laughable. The
only exception to this was in rare cases, the daughters and or wife of a noble or person of royalty,
who would sometimes be taught how to help manage the lands of the noble in order to help
whomever the daughter might marry. There are a few more examples of this in the upcoming

William Shakespeare 's A Midsummer Night 's Dream
The Unbridled Constraints of Shakespearian Romance For generations, Shakespeare's masterpieces
have remained at the peak of the ever increasing bar of literary works. A reason for this could be the
inclination of everyday people to the consistent and underlying concept of romance in each of
Shakespeare's plays and related movies. For instance, one could look at the movies A Midsummer
Night's Dream and Shakespeare in Love. The latter follows the life of William Shakespeare himself,
everything from his love affair with Viola de Lesseps to his creation of Romeo and Juliet. A
Midsummer Night's Dream, is one of the most famous plays of Shakespeare's, revolving around the
tumultuous relationships of four lovers, aided, and sometimes thwarted by the mischief of fairies.
Although Shakespeare in Love outlines a few of the characteristics, such as the triumphs over
obstacles, presence of danger, and humourous qualities that define Shakespearian romance, A
Midsummer Night's Dream provides depth into these feelings, displaying more, if not better
examples of the complex type of "love" that Shakespeare portrays. A theme that is predominant to
the concept of Shakespearian romance is the ability of the lovers to overcome barriers and obstacles
in their way, even if the outcome is not always the expected. In the movie Shakespeare in Love, Will
and Viola, the main lovers, have to face certain hindrances. When Viola recognizes that her

How Does Shakespeare Present Gender Stereotypes In Macbeth
How Shakespeare reinforces or challenges gender stereotypes–Macbeth
Shakespeare delves in to the gender expectation of characters in his plays. He tends to play with the
expectations and stereotypes of gender. He challenges and conforms to these expectations through
characters and their personalities. Shakespeare does this to provoke his audiences understanding of
what gender roles are. These gender roles are displayed through Macduff, Macbeth and Lady
Macbeth.
The gender stereotype of what constitutes a real man is displayed perfectly by Shakespeare in this
scene. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is said to be a valiant soldier that has won the battle for
them. The king congratulates him along with the army of men which also commend him on his
duties. King Duncan is told by the Captain "brave Macbeth–well he deserves that name". The
captain then says "with his brandished steel... unseamed him from the nave to the th'chops" further
complimenting Macbeth on his courageous act, King ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ross brings the news to Macduff that his wife and children had been slaughtered by Macbeth. "All
my pretty chicken and their dam at one fell swoop?" Macduff cries. Malcolm says to "Dispute it like
a man" yet Macduff continues to weep and grieve. He responds "I shall do, But I must also feel it as
a man." Stereotypically, a man is displayed as emotionless and immune to pain. They do not express
their feelings and are strong. In this scene, Shakespeare, has thoroughly challenged this. Macduff is
displayed as courageous man with no fear, this is reinforced by Duncan himself "Front to front
Bring thou this fiend of Scotland and myself. Within my sword's length set him". Here Shakespeare
is challenging the gender stereotype of what a man of integrity is, He has done this by making a man
of his stature cry, allowing him to be emotional and sensitive. Something that was not of the norms

Allusion In Away By Michael Gow

  • 1. Allusion In Away By Michael Gow Michael Gow's Away is a stage play about three socioeconomically varied families and their different holiday experiences. Throughout the play, Gow alludes to many of Shakespeare's texts to deepen the audiences' understanding of the performance. Distinct connections are shown between Gow's Away and Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Tempest and King Lear. These references feature through direct use of lines, characters, theatrical conventions and themes. This essay will explore each of these methods of allusion and explain how this use of intertextuality heightens audience comprehension. The first of the techniques Gow used throughout Away was the use of direct quotes from the Shakespearian plays, A Midsummer Night's Dream and King Lear. The quote "If we shadows have offended/ Think but this and all is mended/ You have but slumbered here" spoken in Away by Tom (Away: Act 1, Scene 1/ A Midsummer Night's Dream: Act 5, Scene 1), suggests ... All of these kinds of love are also displayed in A Midsummer Night's Dream. Examples of each kind include: Gwen and Meg/Titania and Indian Boy displaying parental love, Coral and Roy/Hermia and Demitrius displaying matrimonial love, and an infatuation is displayed between Meg and Tom/Bottom and Titania. The use of many kinds of love allows stronger connections between kinds of characters to be made, gaining depth of understanding through the relationship between Gow's and Shakespeare's works. Destruction is the other outstanding common theme displaying clear intertextuality. The use of a storm in Away allows the audience to make the connection to Shakespeare's King Lear, in which the characters face environmental adversity as well as the adversities of others. • 3. Compare Relationships Between Romeo and Juliet and Between... In Two of Shakespeare's most noted plays Romeo and Juliet and Othello Shakespeare explores the essence of tragedy. How regardless of what measures they take my the nature of the play both relationships are doomed before they flourish, The extent in witch obsession clouds the minds of the luckless heroes and by what extent the women seem to be more in control of the men than the other way round. In the plays 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Othello' by William Shakespeare, Shakespeare uses the concept of a tragic hero to create two characters who by the nature of a tragedy are doomed to fail in their relationships and endeavors. Romeo and Othello are both victims of the plays in which they reside being classic tragic heroes on which the foundation of a tragic hero is built Timeless as they are both plays are relevant to the Shakespearian and Modern Era and will continue to be so . From sonnets 127–152 Shakespeare mention the dark. Though there is no specific identity of the dark lady. Some critics said that maybe dark lady's name was Lucy Nego, or Mary Fitton, or maybe Emilia Lanier. From sonnet 78–86 represents directly poet himself. In sonnet 129,135 & 136, Shakespeare strongly allude the relationship of Shakespeare with the dark lady. But the relationship has no approval of the society. • 7. King Lear: Egg-as-crown Metonymy In metonymy... the literal term for one thing is applied to another with which it has become closely associated because of a recurrent relationship in common experience. Thus "the crown" or the scepter can be used to stand in for a king. (Abrams' Glossary of Literary Terms, 98) In the play King Lear by William Shakespeare, the Fool compares King Lear's Crown to an egg. Shakespeare's use of metonymy to replace the crown with an egg implies that Lear's kingship is fragile and brittle, on the verge of breaking at any moment. We find through the narrative of the play that this is indeed true; King Lear's kingdom crumbles due to his foolish mistakes. King Lear's first mistake of laziness and selfishness leads to the banishment of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then let fall your horrible please, (III, ii, 15–20) In this quote, Lear voices that he never treated his daughters with unkindness during his Kingship, and believes he does not deserve the treatment he is receiving. Lear's life is filled with deceit and bad things are to come. "Canst thou blame him? /His daughters seek his death." (III, iv, 165–166) says Gloucester. The kingdom loses its foundation as Lear's authority slips away. The second crack occurs when Lear loses his sanity. He loses his mind when he discovers his daughters' betrayal and realizes the mistake he made in banishing his only true and loyal daughter. The disgraced king appears in Act IV, Scene vi with a "crown" of wildflowers on his head. The impromptu crown depicts King Lear's mental state, "I would not be thee, Nuncle: thou hast pared they wit o'both sides and left nothing I'th'middle." (I, iv, 190–193). Not only does this quote demonstrates Lears lack of sanity, but explains the scene of the quote and correlation to the flower crown. • 9. foolear The Wise Fool in Shakespeare's King Lear Essay The Wise Fool in King Lear Whether or not the role of the Fool is an important one within King Lear is arguable. Although he seems to have great insight into much of the plays main events, he seems not to have any real influence on both the plot as well as the outcome of the play. He remains the sole character who does not have any direct link with the events of the plot, coupled with an unusually early exit; this raises the question of his significance. However at the very least he does certainly serve as entertainment not only for Lear but the audience as well, with his honesty, wittiness, and clever speeches that not only adds to the light humour but also to show us that the Fool could indeed be perceived as being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, we can see that when the Fool becomes too close to the raw truth Lear will warn him that he will be whipped if he goes too far. When Lear first warns him with it, he replies: "Truth's a dog, that must to kennel: he must be whipped out, when the Lady Brach may stand by the fire and stink." Here the Fool warns Lear that his two daughters will have control over him due to his actions. Although Lear doesn't want to hear the truth and therefore tries to avoid it, the Fool essentially forces it out into the open through his speeches. He often uses comedic verses of saying to highlight the point he is trying to put across. In addition to this, he also provides various rhymes and riddles, taking on the role of a Chorus as a means of discussing the plays actions in a light–hearted yet clearly stating the essence of what is happening. For example, the following quotation sees the Fool referring to Lear's actions concerning Cordelia: ...That man makes his toe What he his heart should make, Shall of a corn cry woe And turn his sleep to wake" He refers to the way in which people may drive away those who they should love due to misplaced affection and that this will ultimately cause a person much grief and sleeplessness. • 12. William Shakespeare 's The Tempest Shakespeare's plays are divided into two categories; tragedy and comedy. Though most of Shakespearian plays are tragedies, Shakespeare was also a magician in writing comedies. The Tempest is one of the most popular Shakespearian comedies. Both tragedies and comedies of Shakespeare deal with the struggle and the conflict of the protagonist and other characters with the external environment. The characters of the tragedies have to be overwhelmed while the characters of comedies achieve triumph and succeed in the end. The Tempest has all the attribute of a typical Shakespearian comedy. Other active characters in this part are Alonso, Sebastian, Antonio, Gonzalo, and Ferdinand. The complications remain in this part with the development of the sub–plot of the alliance among Stephano, Trinculo and Caliban. Shakespeare uses comedy while handling this subplot. The third part is full of crisis and climax where Prospero prepares magic banquet for his enemies. The forth part is called a resolution in which the audiences are introduced about the marriage contract of Miranda and Ferdinand. Ariel appears in the scene with the news with the failure of Caliban plot. The final stage of the plot is the conclusion. In this part, Alonso came to know that his son is alive and he is in love with Prospero's daughter. Prospero gets back his dukedom and the play ends with forgiveness. The number of characters has made the plot more complex. Shakespearian comedies have some common characteristics which are found in The Tempest. The first characteristic of Shakespearian comedy is that there is a struggle of young lovers. They have to go through many adversaries to achieve their love. Miranda is a passive character and Ferdinand is also not the hero of the play. But they are the important couple of the play. Literary devices and words the Shakespeare used have sculpted the English language. Many schools and colleges require that students read his novels. Despite all this, parts of his life are shrouded in mystery. Although many people believe that Shakespeare wrote his all his masterpieces, some people suspect that Sir Francis Bacon, Edward de Vere, or Christopher Marlowe used Shakespeare as a mask to secretly publish their own works. • 16. Why Is Shakespeare Relevant Today Shakespeare is arguably the greatest playwriter that has lived and although he died more than four hundred years ago he is able to live on through his plays and poems that continue to be performed today. Shakespeare has a universal reach with his plays and works intended for any audience that are entertaining but also include important lessons. There are arguments that his relevancy is no longer, but perhaps with evidence provided people will be able to see his works are more relevant now than ever. Without further study and only taking a Shakespearian play for face value there are already characteristics that make his works so timeless. The setting, stories, and characters all seem familiar when they are watched and sometimes the characters seem to reflect one's self. Studying Shakespearian works is not only about analyzing story elements or archetypal patterns but also learning where language that is being used comes from. A history class teaches students how people got to Canada and what historical events have affected the way life is today. In a very similar way the study of Shakespeare is a history lesson on literature and vocabulary. Rather than teaching how Canadian culture was developed it is teaching how the English language was further developed. For some students there might be a feeling of disheartenment or hot–bloodedness when they arrive at the realization that these eventful plays must continue being studied but, in order to understand the language they use that Shakespeare created they must look at how it is used and where these terms came ... • 18. Examples Of Shakesspearian Tragedy Othello As with all of Shakespearian Tragedies, Othello starts as an honorable man who turns into a monster as the story progresses. Othello was a classic and well known example of a Shakespearian tragedy. Othello was a tragedy because, like Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and many other of his renowned tragedies, the protagonist suffers from a fatal flaw which leads to their ultimate and unfortunate downfall. The main character is also usually a person of great power, wealth, and influence who then falls into absolute chaos, such was that of Othello in the Shakespearian tragedy. Another important part of Shakespearian tragedy is the antagonist Iago, who leads Othello down the dark path and ultimately ruins him. Together these all combine to make Othello's life a very tragic one and mark Shakespeare's play as a tragedy. Othello is a true tragic hero, and his demise is caused by his fatal flaw; jealousy. Much to Do with Deception "Much To Do With Deception" A Critical Research Paper about William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing Much Ado About Nothing, written by William Shakespeare, is a dramatic production that uses the tools of deception and humor under the category of comedy. As defined by Paul N. Siegel, "A comic play is usually accepted to be a light–hearted play with a happy conclusion." Yet, Shakespearian tragic plays often use deception as a method to damage the role of the hero. In other Shakespearian tragedies like Othello and Richard III, deception is one of the main tools used to gain a victory over the hero. Champion speaks of the evolution of this mature romantic comedy and describes this scene as "transformational deception". Much Ado About Nothing begins to place drama and intrigue into comedy while developing the characters with plot and purpose. Beatrice finally uncovers her truth through the "dramatic interruption of deception". Robert G. Hunter labels Much Ado About Nothing as a "Comedy of Forgiveness" and notes that Beatrice quickly changed her feelings (shows forgiveness) toward Benedick once deception gave her the push she needed to accept him. This mature comedy resembles tragedy in that it is supplied with a role character's intervention as a guide to the plot. The most shocking act of deception in Much Ado About Nothing was done to Claudio and Hero. Meredith Anne Skura mentions the utilization of what is known as "stock characters" in comedic plays. These are normally young boys with their female partners. Our stock characters in this play are Hero and Claudio. The two of them, unlike Beatrice and Benedick, begin their relationship immediately. The deception begins when Borachio finds out about Don Pedro's plan to influence Hero for Claudio cause. At the party, Borachio and Don John bump into Claudio and try to make him think that Don Pedro is only enticing Hero for himself: "Signor, you are very near my brother in his love. / He is enamored on Hero" (2.1.155–6). Though Macbeth does not reveal his plans of murdering Banquo and Fleance, the understanding between him and his wife is so perfect that she can easily read the thoughts in her husband's mind. Macbeth knows quite well of the feminine qualities of his wife. So in Act III, Scene II, he decides to protect her from the knowledge of his plans to murder Banquo and his son. It was famous for being the main location of many Shakespearian plays, for having a unique architectural layout from other buildings, and for being a main attraction for many people during the Elizabethan Era and the Modern Era. The Globe theatre was built in 1599 and is very famous for having a unique architectural layout that was different from other buildings during the time period. It was built from oak, deal, and stolen playhouse frames. It is a large circular structure that is three stories tall and has a straw covered roof. It looks similar to what a football stadium looks like today because the middle of the theatre is open. The Globe theatre was built to hold about 3,000 people. Construction of the theatre was started by Cuthbert Burbage because the lease on an older theatre had expired. The location of the Globe Theatre was not actually in the central part of London but rather in an outlying district called Southwark on the Thames River. This play demonstrates how women in Elizabethan society were expected to behave in a passive manner, how the men's opinion was accepted over the females and how women had to conform to men. The over–arching idea of the ideal female was that she was passive and was accepting of her role in society. This theme is explored throughout the entirety of the play but is highly demonstrated in Act one scene one of the play. According to Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, a tragic hero is a character of high rank and nobility, exhibits a tragic flaw, and recognizes how his actions led to his eventual downfall. William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Julius Caesar incited a century old argument over who really deserves the title of "The Tragic Hero." Many argue that Caesar is the tragic hero. However, I believe that Brutus should hold the title of "tragic hero" because he is a noble and respected man, he holds tragic flaw of poor judgment. But most importantly, what separates him from Caesar, is that he recognizes how these flaws and his decision to murder his leader resulted in his own demise. To accomplish their plan, the conspirators needed a noble man of high stature to justify their actions. The best man for the job was Brutus. Brutus was Caesar's best friend, loved by the people, and he loved the people back. Therefore, it only made sense for the conspirators to recruit Brutus guarantees the support of the Roman people. Cassius admits this too, "Brutus shall lead, and we will grace his heels / With the most boldest and best hearts of Rome" (3.1.135–136). • 32. King Lear : A Shakespearean Shakespearian Tragedy The play King Lear is what is known as a Shakespearian tragedy. All that this means is that it was written by Shakespeare, possibly one of the most famous playwrights in history, and that the play is considered to fit into the category of a tragedy. A tragedy can be simply described as a play with an unhappy ending. Shakespeare wrote a number of tragedies, and readers of the plays debate which tragedies were the best. King Lear is certainly a well–known tragedy, but should it be counted as one of the best? Should it be considered one of Shakespeare's four greatest tragedies? Many people do regard it as one of the best Shakespeare tragedies, but it generally comes down to opinion. In order to determine the best Shakespeare tragedy, it has to be stacked up against other well–known Shakespearian tragedies like Macbeth, Othello, Julius Caesar, Romeo and Juliet, Antony and Cleopatra, and Hamlet in multiple ways, both objectively and subjectively. When compared to these plays, it is evident that King Lear should not be counted as one of the top four Shakespearian tragedies on account of three things, its popularity in relation to the other tragedies, its character development in relation to the other tragedies, and the clarity of its overall message compared to the other tragedies. This is not to say that King Lear is a poorly written play, just that although it is great in its own right, it does not deserve to be in the top four Shakespearian tragedies of all time list; other ... " This event of Romeo and Juliet getting married will both cause the deaths of them both, and the deaths of many others. Also in Act 2, scene 2, Puck Oberon's mischievous assistant says this, " When thou wak'st let love forbid." This line in MSND is where Puck has just put the juice of the flower into Lysander's eye. Both of these scenes have just destroyed the regular parts of the play and flipped it upside down. The third and final comparison of the plays is Act 3. Act 3 of these plays is also very different. Romeo and Juliet have just been married when Romeo's friend Mercutio is killed Romeo kills his killer. Then Romeo is banished and Romeo has a night with Juliet. On the other hand in MSND the third act contains Puck making the Queen and Lysander love something they don't. Both Act 3s of the plays do have another part of them where they are completely turned around and things go from bad to worse. This is very well shown in Act 3, scene 1, lines 185–186 when the prince says, " And for that offense immediately we do exile him hence. Shakespeare's Use of Language, Imagery and Setting to Illuminate Prospero's Journey from Revenge to Reconciliation The Tempest opens on 'a ship at sea' caught in 'a tempestuous storm'. This setting would immediately suggest to the Elizabethan audience, the presence of danger and evil, as they would be familiar with other Shakespearian plays where storms have been used in this way, for example, Macbeth and King Lear. The desperate language of the characters in the opening scene would further reinforce the audience's sense of evil afoot. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This very active opening establishes the theme for the play and the audience is left anticipating a story of revenge and evil. In Scene II, Shakespeare introduces a contrast to the storm through the setting of the island. At the time Shakespeare wrote the Tempest, such a setting would have been significant to the audience as many new lands and cultures were being discovered. These places were surrounded by myth, superstition and fear of the unknown. The exchange between Miranda and her father Prospero establishes that this is no ordinary island or plot. Miranda's opening speech suggests that her father has magical powers, 'if by your Art, my dearest father, you have put the wild waters in this roar, allay them'. This suggestion that Prospero was responsible for the storm further reinforces the idea introduced in the previous scene, that he is out for revenge, although the reason for his desire for revenge is not clear at this point. The island's setting evokes ideas of magic and strange happenings and suggests to the audience that anything can happen. Miranda's language contains much dark imagery, which adds to the air of foreboding. Her statement that the sky 'would pour down stinking pitch' has unnatural overtones, suggesting that this was no normal storm. Prospero's expositional speech, which begins on line 36 in Scene II, ... The literary device in this quote is an allusion toward the famous wizard Merlin in the Arthurian legends. The effect of the literary device on the narrative is that it strengthens the two themes. It is amazing how Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet written centuries ago can be better than any movie productions of Romeo and Juliet, which had much better technology to work with. Although the films appeared more alluring and may be slightly easier to follow, they left out some major parts. The play had better plot details and the original Shakespearian language which made it much more interesting and by far a better representation of the story. This essay will prove why the original play should be taught to English students over all film versions. One major difference between the play script and the movie occurs in the plot. An example of this is in the beginning in the marriage scene where Romeo and Juliet privately get married by Friar. In the play, Romeo and Juliet both come across as acting very seriously, you can tell this by the language the two use. In 'Act 2, Scene 6' Romeo says that "the Holy Words the Friar speaks can make something without an equal" which for a young man is a very intellectual thing to say. In the same scene in each movie version Romeo and Juliet flirt and chuckle during the entire process. Women were oppressed by men. Men were shown as violent and aggressive. "Good Night Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet)," written by Ann–Marie Macdonald talks about women being aggressive and violent. • 56. Should Shakespearian Text Should Not Be Taught In Schools... Why Shakespearian Text Shouldn't be Taught Have you ever read a page of a book in another language and then asked why you do not understand it? That is how must high school students feel while reading Shakespearian texts like "Romeo and Juliet", "Hamlet", and "Taming the Shrew". Some people think that Shakespearian text should be taught in school because of the historic, while others like myself think that Shakespeare should not be taught because in today society, people do not speak in old English and students today do not understand the language use. One reason why Shakespeare texts should not been taught in high school is other text with different cultural backgrounds can be taught instead. While I do understand, Shakespearian text teaches much about the time period in which it was written but, this information can be taught in history class and not in an English class. In an article by The Washington Post, a teacher that talks about how there are more works of literature then Shakespeare that teach the same thing. After this the author goes on about how being taught Shakespeare expanded his vocabulary and open him to topics like mythology and philosophy and how he became a better person reading through lines of poetry and dialogue. I do agree with Mr. Holtman when he says this but if this response to text can be achieved more quickly using texts that make more sense to the readers, being high school students, while being engaging and interesting to ... • 58. Creative Elements In Julie Taymor's The Tempest In Julie Taymor's theatrical rendition of "The Tempest", Taymor successfully directs the challenging Shakespearian play drawing on personal creative elements. Throughout the entire play Taymor channels her artistic vison of the play, incorporating ideas such as mask making, lighting effects, and costume design to create her own concept production. Taymor successfully accomplishes her task of tackling a difficult Shakespeare play, interpreting the artistic values to make it her own, and setting it to a live production. As with any classical piece, especially those written by William Shakespeare, in today's theatrical world is especially difficult. • 60. Power In Julius Caesar Julius Caesar playing at A Noise Within Theatre in May 2015 was designed to exemplify, "power and the abuse of it". With secondary themes such as friendship, allegiance, and the harms of pride, directors Geoff Elliot and Julia Rodriguez–Elliot attempt to turn this classic Shakespearian tragedy into a play applicable to modern times. As emphasized by Elliot in the program guide, "Our Rome is one that moves through time" (Slooboda pg5). Furthermore, the directors set out to highlight government corruption, the ideals of Democracy, and tyranny; the play Julius Caesar, "explores what freedom is built upon" (as stated by Elliot). The story begins with Caesar's return to Rome after defeating Pompey. A soothsayer warns Caesar of upcoming danger, but Caesar ignores him and continues with his victory celebration. Cassius & Brutus, now alone and in fear of the ambitious Caesar, believe he will turn the Roman Republic into a tyrannical monarch and conspire to murder him. He is murdered, just as the soothsayer warned, at the "Ides of March". The citizens are manipulated into rooting for the conspirators by Brutus' speech and then thrown the other way (against the ... • 62. House Of Cards Research Paper Further Implications House of Cards is undoubtedly a continuation of Shakespearian tragedy tradition in a popular medium. With a 9/10 rating, the television series is a favorite amongst its many viewers, some even praising it as "the best Shakespeare adaptation of all time". However, aside from providing entertainment, this television series is significant in a multitude of other ways. One of which is to reflect a pessimistic view on American politics. While Bill Clinton asserted humorously that "99% of House of cards is accurate, the 1% that's not accurate is that you can never pass an education bill that fast", in all seriousness, the excessive treachery and murder is not an accurate depiction of everyday Washington. Political Scientist Seth Masket expresses that as an entertainment program, "very mundane things are going to be excessively dramatized". Figure 6. Political science graduate Miles Kellerman asserted that if "House of Cards proceeds in the spirit of a traditional Shakespearean tragedy", Underwood's "clutch at power will prove ultimately self– destructive." This relates to how Shakespeare's tragedies emphasize poetic justice, meaning that the antagonist would ultimately be punished, typically through death. Thus, Francis and Claire might face the same fate in the following season, similar to how Shakespearian anti–heroes such as Macbeth meet their downfall after reaching the top of the political hierarchy. If the Shakespeare trajectory of punishing the evil is followed in House of Cards, this show serves the social function of discouraging politicians from misconduct. Audiences will also have a sense of justice as this outcome of Francis reflects an ideal world where those that committed wrongdoings faces consequence, regardless of power ... • 64. The Shakespearian Authorship Controversy Analysis The Shakespearian Authorship Controversy By Hyrum Shingleton To be or not to be, is a famous question Shakespeare asked his audience in the Hamlet over 200 years ago, yet people are still asking "To be or not to be Shakespeare? That is the real question." They are like the foolish man believing he is the wise man, going around teaching a false doctrine. They believe that their favorite candidate for Shakespeare is, and always will be Shakespeare. No matter how obvious that there is no way he was ever Shakespeare. Shakespeare is the real Shakespeare because we have no proof for someone else, why wouldn't they claim it and two of the four head candidates were dead. Shakespeare is Shakespeare. • 66. Essay On Women's Rights In American Time The Rights of Women in Shakespearian Time Verses Rights of Women Currently Since Shakespearian time to the present, there has been a dramatic change in the expectations of what women are supposed to do. In many different ways, women have started to be expected to do quite a bit more. In terms of family management and overall authority within the family, as well with expectations of what they are allowed to do outside the house. Since Shakespeare's time there has been quite a few things concerning women's rights that have happened, in fact several hundred years have passed, and a lot has changed in the world. For example, as it currently stands in the United States of America, it is possible for a woman to become leader of our country, and several others countries as well. Whereas in Shakespeare's time, Most countries were lead by a king, and the thought of a woman being in charge of anything other than cooking and cleaning was laughable. The only exception to this was in rare cases, the daughters and or wife of a noble or person of royalty, who would sometimes be taught how to help manage the lands of the noble in order to help whomever the daughter might marry. There are a few more examples of this in the upcoming paragraph. In Shakespeare's time women weren't expected or even allowed to do much, they were little more than property ... • 68. Romeo And Juliet's Unlucky Relationships The iconic play of Romeo and Juliet has been widely known for years due to its portrayal of love at its absolute worst. Some may believe that Romeo and Juliet's unlucky relationship matches closely with modern day love affairs but the opposite is true, the difference between this Shakespearian tragedy and modern day relationships is as clear as day and Romeo and Juliet's tragic end and age prove this. Even how the star–crossed lovers met set them up for failure. It is common for couples to drift apart, whether it be by their own will or death's harsh toll, but it is unlikely for a relationship to end in suicide, let alone two. Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare Essay Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare First impressions of Twelfth Night can be deceiving as on a simplistic level it can be portrayed as a typical Shakespearean comedy. However, Twelfth Night is a mixture of both romantic comedy and tragedy. Also Twelfth night has unusual names such as Sir Toby Belch and Sir Andrew Aguecheek, this type of humour is also used in 'Midsummer's Night Dream' in the form of Bottom. • 72. William Shakespeare 's A Midsummer Night 's Dream The Unbridled Constraints of Shakespearian Romance For generations, Shakespeare's masterpieces have remained at the peak of the ever increasing bar of literary works. A reason for this could be the inclination of everyday people to the consistent and underlying concept of romance in each of Shakespeare's plays and related movies. For instance, one could look at the movies A Midsummer Night's Dream and Shakespeare in Love. The latter follows the life of William Shakespeare himself, everything from his love affair with Viola de Lesseps to his creation of Romeo and Juliet. A Midsummer Night's Dream, is one of the most famous plays of Shakespeare's, revolving around the tumultuous relationships of four lovers, aided, and sometimes thwarted by the mischief of fairies. Although Shakespeare in Love outlines a few of the characteristics, such as the triumphs over obstacles, presence of danger, and humourous qualities that define Shakespearian romance, A Midsummer Night's Dream provides depth into these feelings, displaying more, if not better examples of the complex type of "love" that Shakespeare portrays. A theme that is predominant to the concept of Shakespearian romance is the ability of the lovers to overcome barriers and obstacles in their way, even if the outcome is not always the expected. In the movie Shakespeare in Love, Will and Viola, the main lovers, have to face certain hindrances. When Viola recognizes that her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 74. Analyzing The Closet Scene In Mel Gibson's Hamlet The Closet Scene in the Shakespearian play "Hamlet" was viewed in three different films. The scene done by Mel Gibson was the best adaptation because it was filmed exactly how it was written in the play. Mel Gibson was successful by evoking a strong emotional response within the audience when Hamlet was shown being aggressive toward his mother, with the strong presence of the Oedipus complex. The setting in this version was true to the text–unlike Hawke's version which was very modern–as they were in an older setting which the text was in, an older time, when royalty strongly ruled different counties, and they strongly believed in religion. • 76. How Does Shakespeare Present Gender Stereotypes In Macbeth How Shakespeare reinforces or challenges gender stereotypes–Macbeth Shakespeare delves in to the gender expectation of characters in his plays. He tends to play with the expectations and stereotypes of gender. He challenges and conforms to these expectations through characters and their personalities. Shakespeare does this to provoke his audiences understanding of what gender roles are. These gender roles are displayed through Macduff, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. The gender stereotype of what constitutes a real man is displayed perfectly by Shakespeare in this scene. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is said to be a valiant soldier that has won the battle for them. The king congratulates him along with the army of men which also commend him on his duties. King Duncan is told by the Captain "brave Macbeth–well he deserves that name". Stereotypically, a man is displayed as emotionless and immune to pain. They do not express their feelings and are strong. In this scene, Shakespeare, has thoroughly challenged this. Macduff is displayed as courageous man with no fear, this is reinforced by Duncan himself "Front to front Bring thou this fiend of Scotland and myself. Within my sword's length set him". Here Shakespeare is challenging the gender stereotype of what a man of integrity is, He has done this by making a man of his stature cry, allowing him to be emotional and sensitive.
