1. STRANGERTHINGS – TV SCRIPTSTYLE – The TV show ‘Stranger Things’ is a Netflix
original which means it is distributed by Netflix
streaming services. This script follows a similar layout
to a film scripts, however much shorterdue to the
episodic series. This script begins with a sound effect
followed by a superimposed title. The locations and
descriptionsare just as detailed as a movie. However,
unlike The Girl on the Train, this script has no dialogue
until the next few pages. This is due to the long
introduction ofthe villain. As seen within the script,
there are several small scenes, shown through small
numbers on the right and left hand side, with brings
together the introduction beforethe credits and opening
sequencebegins.
CONTENT – Stranger Things has 3 season (25
episodes) and in September2019, the show was
renewed for a four season. Set in the fictional town of
Hawkins, Indiana, in November 1983, the first season
focuses on the investigation into the disappearanceofa
young boy amid supernatural events occurring around
the town, including the appearance ofa girl with
psychokinetic abilities who helps the missing boy's
friends in their search. The second season, titled
Stranger Things 2, is set one year laterin October 1984
and deals with the characters'attempts to return to
normality and the aftermath ofthe events from the first
season. The third season, titled Stranger Things 3, is set
in July 1985 and focuses on the characters growing up
amidst a new threat during the Fourth ofJuly.
NARRATIVE – Within this TV show, there havebeen
3 key stories tothe show. This is shown via each season.
Howev er,within every episode there is a new discovery or
story which fits intothe bigger picture. In the finalseason
(unknown when) theDuffer Brothers (exc.Producers) will
probably tiethe whole story together. Each season (3 act
structure) fits in with Todorous (1969) theory of
equilibrium anddisequilibrium.In addition,Stranger
Things fits in with Vladmir Propp (1928)theory of each
characters function. For example,Eleven is the hero
within the show, as she saves Mike but she alsofits in with
the ‘doner’whoadds ‘magic powers’.This is shown
through Eleven’s psychokineticabilities.
GENRE – The genre ofStranger Things is a mix between science fiction, horrorand has features ofa period drama. This is due to the connotations ofeach genre.
For instance, as the show is set in the 80s, each ofthe character wears 80s clothes, has older cars and old telephones.Furthermore, sci-fi due to the nearby Hawkins
National Laboratory ostensibly performs scientific research for the United States Department ofEnergy, but secretly does experiments into the paranormal and
supernatural, including thosethat involve human test subjects. Inadvertently, they havecreated a portal to an alternate dimension, "the Upside Down”.
TARGET AUDIENCE – The main target audience
is teenagers aged 15+ whoare within full-timeeducations.
Furthermore, their parents would be middle-aged and
based on the C2/C1 on the NRS scale reflecting being
skilful working class or lower middle class.Due tothe
main characters mostly being kids,Ibelieve thetarget
audience will be able torelate tothe characters morethan
if they werealladults. In addition,on the Young and
Rubicam’s 4C’s model,Ibelieve the target audience would
be placed within the ‘mainstream’ category. This is due to
the series being accessible only on Netflix (online
streaming service)and the show being an over-allpopular
v iewing. Also, their routinewould be mainstream totheir
specific age. The uses and gratification (1974)by Blumer,
Katzand McQuail, the target audience for Stranger
Things would fit intothe ‘diversion’ category which allows
the audiencetoescape from everyday life and their
routine.
