2. Film script – The HangoverStyle – The media is film and the institution
is warner bros pictures. The script follows
the typical format and style of film scripts
where it begins with a description setting
the scene to help the audience to
understand what is going on also
describing both the interior and exterior.
This is then followed by introducing the
first few characters through their dialogue.
The language style in this script is of a short
conversation with a lot of description of
what is also going on simultaneously in the
scene.
Content - Written on spec by writing team
Lucas and Moore (Four Christmases,
Ghosts of Girlfriends Past), this script is a
near-perfect execution of a very high
concept. Along with (500) Days of Summer,
this is probably the best screenplay to
come out in 2009. The Hangover is a series
of three American comedy films created by
Todd Phillips. All three films follows the
misadventures of a quartet of friends who
go on their road trip to attend a bachelor
party.
Narrative structure – The hangover has a
typical 3 act structure to the film which
also fits with Todorous (1969) theory of
equilibrium and disequilibrium. Within the
hangover film there is also evidence of
Vladimir Propp’s (1928) theory where
there are characters that for example play
the hero or donor/ helper etc.
Genre -The Hangover is a conventional
adolescent/adult comedy movie with
elements of documentary genre
interweaved in it. Because the film is more
suitable for more mature audiences due to
its references to drugs alcohol and sex it
has been rated a 15 by the BBFC. Within
the comedy genre bright, colourful lighting
is often used to reflect the upbeat, light
tone of the film. Audiences associate the
comedy genre with vibrance and joy. Sound
effects are stereotypically used throughout
comedy films, acting as codes or markers
and enhancing comedic effect (e.g. slapstick
sounds).
Target Audience – It has a BBFC film
certificate rating of a 15, so it is targeting
15-35 year olds, because most people
would want to watch it with their friends,
family or partners. Furthermore the target
market will depend on the scene in the
film, so within the hangover this will be a
more adult scene with strong language,
maybe some violence and drug or alcohol
references. It is also successful with both
genders. Most males who watch it will
probably be able to relate to the storyline
as it is about 4 average men. Furthermore I
think women are also attracted to it
because they will be attracted to the men
who are in the film. I think they would be
middle class males a to c1 on the nrs scale.
3. TV script – Stranger thingsStyle – The media is TV and the
institution is Netflix as it is a Netflix
original series. This script follows the
general style of TV scripts where it
begins with a description setting the
scene to help the audience to
understand what is going on then the
dialogue begins. I also tells us at the start
of each description if it is INT or EXT, the
location and if it day or night. It also
mention how the camera moves through
the scene for example it says ‘we draw
closer to the door … and closer… and …
the door explodes open’.
Content – Set In 1980s Hawkins, Indiana,
a group of young friends witness
supernatural forces and secret
government exploits. As they search for
answers, the children unravel a series of
extraordinary mysteries. In episode 1,
the main characters and their
backstories are introduced whilst also
setting the scene for the audience.
Narrative structure – Each series or
stranger things has a typical 3 act
structure which also fits with Todorous
(1969) theory of equilibrium and
disequilibrium. Within the stranger
things there is also evidence of Vladimir
Propp’s (1928) theory where there are
characters that for example play the
hero or donor/ helper etc. e.g. eleven
plays the hero and the rest of the kids
like Dustin, will and mike are the helpers.
Genre – stranger things Stranger Things is
an American science fiction horror web
television series created by the Duffer
Brothers and released on Netflix. Science
fiction horror films are a subgenre of
science fiction and horror films, often
revolving around subjects that include but
are not limited to alien invasions, mad
scientists, and/or experiments gone wrong.
This definitely fits with stranger things as
Hawkins lab is experimenting on eleven and
the demogorgans are invading from the
upside down.
Target Audience – stranger things has an
age 18-49 demographic, according to the
ratings currency company. Additionally,
361,000 people watched all nine of
“Stranger Things 2's” hour-long episodes on
the day it launched. It is both aimed and is
popular with both genders. According to
the BBFC all three seasons of Stranger
Things have either been rated 12 or 15
overall. I think that mostly teenagers of
both genders are attracted to watching this
because the main characters are of similar
age it allows them to relate to the
characters more which makes it a more
enjoyable experience or the younger
viewers rather than the older viewers who
for example are probably the parents of the
target audience.
4. Radio script – welcome to
our village (bbc)
Style – The media is Radio and the institution
is BBC. Welcome To Our Village, Please Invade
Carefully is a sitcom on BBC Radio 4, written
by Eddie Robson and produced by Ed Morrish.
The script follows the typical format and style
of radio scripts where it jumps strait into
dialogue as it is radio so therefore only audio,
and it also describes the FX that is happening
in Each scene. It also states at the beginning of
the script where the scene is set in this case
being the village hall.
content – Welcome To Our Village, Please
Invade Carefully is a sitcom on BBC Radio 4,
written by Eddie Robson and produced by Ed
Morrish. It concerns the invasion of the small
Buckinghamshire village of Cresdon Green by
an alien race called the Geonin. In the first
scene we are getting introduced to the key
characters.
Narrative structure – Each episode has a
typical 3 act structure to it structure which
also fits with Todorous (1969) theory of
equilibrium and disequilibrium. Within
welcome to our village there is also evidence
of Vladimir Propp’s (1928) theory where there
are characters that for example play the hero
or donor/ helper and villain… throughout the
show.
Genre – the radio show welcome to our village
please invade carefully is a sci-fi sit com radio show.
The codes and conventions of the sci-fi genre
include things such as nanotechnology, robots,
spaceships, aliens, new scientific principles, time
travel, dystopian/ utopian societies… Most sci-
fi films have a target audience of 18-29 year old
males. A sit com is a genre of comedy centred on a
fixed set of characters who carry over from episode
to episode. Sitcoms can be contrasted with sketch
comedy, where a troupe may use new characters in
each sketch, and stand-up comedy, where a
comedian tells jokes and stories to an audience.
Target audience – Most sci-fi films have a target
audience of 18-29 year old males . The prime
audience for sci-fi will always be ‘geeks’. As the
main characters are in their thirties people of that
age category will probably enjoy it most as they will
be able to relate to the characters the most and
they will be able to understand the jokes in the
show better than perhaps a teen or mature
audience would as it is specifically aimed at their
age category. I think they would be middle class
males a to c1 on the nrs scale.
5. Video game script – Dragon shard
Style – The media is video game and the institution
is liquid entertainment and the platform is
Microsoft windows. Dungeons & Dragons: Dragon
shard is a real-time strategy role-playing video
game, developed for Microsoft Windows by Liquid
Entertainment, and published by Atari in 2005. It
takes place in Eberron, one of the official Dungeons
& Dragons campaign settings. And it was designed
by Keith baker. The script follows the typical format
and style of video game scripts where it is
describing and telling the story to the players.
content – The game combines elements of
traditional real time strategy's gameplay with role-
playing elements such as hero units,
and questing. Dragon shard includes two single-
player campaigns, single-player skirmish maps, and
multiplayer support. The single-player campaign
follows the struggles of three competing factions to
gain control of a magical artefact known as the
Heart of Siberys.
Narrative structure – Each level of the game/
‘campaign’ has a typical 3 act structure to it
structure which also fits with Todorous (1969)
theory of equilibrium and disequilibrium. Within
welcome to our village there is also evidence of
Vladimir Propp’s (1928) theory where there are
characters that for example play the hero or donor/
helper and villain… throughout the video game
with the villains being the dragons.
Genre – Dungeons & Dragons is a
fantasy tabletop role-playing game.
Dragon shard is the video game version
of the game. Fantasy is a genre of
speculative fiction set in a fictional
universe, often inspired by real world
myth and folklore. Its roots are in oral
traditions, which then became literature
and drama. The common codes and
conventions of the fantasy genre are;
magic, wizards, knights, dragons,
mystical lands, strange creatures i.e.
unicorns…
Target audience – The target audience
for this would be young to middle aged
‘nerdy men a to c1 on the Nrs scale.
They would like tactical strategy games,
much like the board games, like the
space opera setting, and own a gaming
level PC meaning it is for people who are
already into gaming as somebody who
isn’t is not going to go out and by the
entire gaming set up just to play this
game. And the target audience for this
game are most likely to be introverts as
this is the typical person who is
associated with playing the board game
and video games.
