4. Ex-Student Testimonial
Sofia Nikolaeva (currently board member of MPI Finland Chapter) earned an
MPI Foundation scholarship to attend the 2015 World Education Congress (WEC),
which helped her find a new job, make friends with amazing people and step out
of her comfort zone.
Nikolaeva, who works in business development at Catchbox, joined MPI as a
student in 2013 after a fellow student member shared her story about receiving an
MPI Foundation scholarship.
“Her story was so inspiring and she was so excited so I thought to myself, ‘I definitely want to join this
community!’” she says. “At that time I wasn’t sure where I wanted to work or in which industry upon
graduation, even though I was studying event planning. So I joined MPI and my life has changed a
great deal since then. I’ve found my passion for the meeting and event industry thanks to MPI!”
Nikolaeva had long wanted to attend a WEC, so when she applied for and received a scholarship to the
San Francisco event, her “dream was finally coming true.”
“I was able to travel to another part of the world and attend this high-class conference along with
thousands of industry professionals,” she says. “It was an eye-opening experience for me. I’ve realized
how big the industry really is and how many interesting, like-minded people are inside it! As an MPI
member I felt at home at WEC in San Francisco even though I was thousands of miles away from my
home city. This feeling was really rewarding. I guess this is why we want to belong to professional groups
like this. It empowers you, gives you support and encourages you to make the most of your
opportunities.”
