Welcome to MPI!. New members from Canada, Mexico and the United States are joining us today.
The goal of new member orientation is to provide you with a general overview of many of the benefits offered to our members in order for you to develop a plan to make your membership experience meet your expectations.
I often like to refer to MPI as if it was a gym membership. You have to show up, participate, and continue to come back in order to see the results you desire. The more time you spend with us the better the results will be.
Meeting Professionals International begin in 1972 by Robert (Buzz) Bartlow. 159 charter members came together to share their knowledge on planning meetings and events and talk about the advancement of this profession. That same year the very first MPI chapter was established which was the Rocky Mountain Chapter. Our mission today is still very similar to the vision Mr. Bartlow had in 1972.
Today, MPI Is comprised of 18,500 members belonging to 80 chapters and clubs in 22 countries around the world. 43% of our members are planners, 46% are suppliers and the remaining are students and faculty.
QUICK POLL: Why did you join MPI?
Today’s orientation will highlight the benefits surrounding our mission of education, networking and business exchanges.

And please keep in mind… the chapter which you chose to affiliate with may provide you with MORE benefits specific to that chapter. These benefits will be listed on your chapter website and may be covered in a chapter orientation.
Our online member community is full of ways you can learn, exchange ideas, or meet other MPI members. Be sure to sign up for one or all online communities which will keep you connected to members.
Each MPI member has the opportunity to affiliate with one chapter. Our breakdown of chapters by location; 45 in United States, 7 in Canada, 13 in Europe, 2 in Latin America, and 2 in Asia, along with 18 student clubs in North America.
Additional affiliation with more than one chapter is available by contacting the chapter directly.
Many of them include additional member benefits specific to your local community. Check your local chapter site for a list of additional benefits.
Corporate Social Responsibility is important at MPI and our chapters. We encourage our members and chapters to support their local communities.
Members can post new jobs, surf jobs as they are added, or even add your own resume. It’s important to remember that if you are an MPI Member who is looking for a new position, you see jobs instantly, where as non-members see them after two weeks.
MPI Hosted Buyer is one of the premiere programs in the industry. While it’s not the largest – and we don’t want it to be – it is the most successful. Our 100% satisfaction rate from previous participants is something we take great pride in.

CMM is like a masters degree for planners. If you current have a CMP or a CMM, I would encourage you to jot down this website so you can learn about the new CMM designation. There is a great Q&A online to answer all your questions.
Part of our mission that we saw earlier was for MPI to be a prominent voice for the industry. Our grassroots campaign to inform the public about the profession was launched in early 2014 on nationally syndicated news stations like NBC, CBS, and CNN. We also shared information this campaign with 1 million house holds on North American Meeting Industry Day in 2015.
“Meetings Outlook” focuses on current and future trends that affect our profession and allows you to adjust your business before issues arise. This is one of the most watched quarterly reports used by executives and independent planners to help them prepare for the future.
Most recent edition is inside of the May 2015 edition of TMP.
The MPI Foundation fuels the growth and advancement of MPI members by providing them professional development and career opportunities through grants and scholarships. Since 2013, the foundation has given provided $1 million in grants, scholarships, and pan-industry research. For 2015, at last count we had 109 scholarships available for educational opportunities like CMP or CMM exams, conference attendance, or full degree programs (bachelors/masters).
Like I mentioned before, you must fully use your MPI membership to see the results. The more time you spend with us the more you will see the results.
