The Report Of The Mississippi River
The Report of the Mississippi River River, land and natural resources are important parts for
people's daily lives, and its configurations represent how people affected the environment over 150
years. With the improvement of technology, people are able to utilize these technologies to remold
the river levee; however, the impacts that came from people also brought some significant changes
to the area. At the beginning, the inhabitants were some wildlife, such as ducks, geese, swans and
wading birds. These animals utilized the river as a flyway and played above the river. Human beings
did not enter this area until Native Americans had battles with intruders. The upper reaches of the
Mississippi River have plenty of wetlands, which supports the basic living conditions for animals.
Furthermore, the major meaning for first inhabitants was a location to settle down near the
Mississippi river, because they were chased by the attackers. After they settled down near the
Mississippi river, they set up their own tribes in this area. In general, most rivers are the cradles of
civilization. For instance, the Changjiang river in China afforded the farmland, and people could
obtain food resources by means of cultivating. The Mississippi river also had similar functions for
the Native Americans, they had the opportunities to find the food resources, for instance, fish were
the primary choice. In the report "Native

Mississippi River Floodplains
Floodplains contribute a crucial part in the ecology of the lower Mississippi River (LMR), but due
to human interactions they have severely affected the ecological functions of the floodplains. By
researching spatial analysis, this happens when a floodplain becomes isolated from the main stem of
the river by constructing levees (in order to prevent major floods in populated neighborhoods) and
changing landscapes (for example, bulldozing forests and paving over that land with concrete). The
levees built by the federal government in the Mississippi River has influenced the floodplain by
altering the flow of water and raises the water levels that goes into the surrounding water systems
(Changnon, 1998). Wetlands act as natures sponge to absorb ... Show more content on

The levee system has been present along the Mississippi River since immigrants moved here from
Europe (Kemp, 2002). People need water to survive and grow economically and the settlers of the
Midwest found the Mississippi River, which was one of the biggest sources of fresh water. Access to
the river provided a means to transport for developing commerce and industry, water for crops, and
a source to drink. As floods swept away their livelihoods, a consensus grew that the Mississippi
River would need to be artificially controlled in order to benefit fully from its proximity without the
risks. Some levees were formed naturally by the Mississippi River's fluvial process. By building up
on these natural levees was a solution to the flood problem. Eventually the Army Corps of Engineers
(USACE) was put in control in creating and maintaining a way to prevent floods. This started the
first system of manmade levee systems along the Mississippi

East Verde River Case Study
Below the Mogollon Rim near Payson runs the East Verde River, a waterway that is supplemented
with discharge of water collected on The Rim at CC. Cragin Reservoir. According to Clay
Thompson of the Arizona Republic, the area gets its name from the mechanization of the water's
power through a metal water wheel fashioned from milk cans that was used by gold miner James
"Dave" Greer to crush ore and supply a sluice box with water.
The United States Geological Survey pinpoints the waterway's rate of flow at Camp Verde, Arizona,
60 some miles down the canyon. Median flow for June 1 hovers at 82 feet per second, though the
canyon that guides it can become a raging torrent, once funneling 481 cubic feet per second through
its rocky shoals on June 1 of 1992. Fortunately, our visit to the popular recreation area was marked
with a serene 63 cubic feet per second chattering down the river. ... Show more content on

Eassy On Bangladesh Rivers Or, The Rivers Of Bangladesh
Short Essay on Bangladesh Rivers Or, The Rivers of Bangladesh
Bangladesh is a land of rivers. The economic condition of Bangladesh is mostly connected with her
rivers. The rivers of Bangladesh are undoubtedly wide. But they shrink in size for insufficiency of
wither in dry seasons. With the heavy rainfall in the rainy season they become full to the brim and
look terrible. The Padma, the meghna, the jamuna and the karnaphuli are the principal rivers of
Bangladesh. Besides there's, there are other small rivers of no less importance. All three rivers
flowing through different districts of Bangladesh fall into the Bay of Bengal. In the rainy season
these rivers swell to the brim and sometimes overflow their banks and inundate the adjoining fields.
They then look like the vast sheet of water all around. Bangladesh is an agricultural country. Her
river makes her soil fertile by depositions the silt carried by them of the land. Paddy and jute are the
main crops of Bangladesh. Irrigation is essential for the bumper growth of these crops. So the water
of these rivers is used for the purpose of irrigation by means of power–pumps or by digging canals.
It is, therefore, evident that the economic condition of the cultivators largely depends on rivers.
Many kinds of fish are around in the rivers of Bangladesh. These rivers are an inexhaustible source
of supply of fish to her people. The fisherman of Bangladesh earns their livelihood by fishing in
these rivers. They are entirely dependent

The Flint River
The Flint River begins as a small groundwater seepage in Hapeville in west central Georgia. It
travels down the state getting wider and deeper until it reaches its final destination, Lake Seminole.
This river is 349 river miles long and has a watershed area of 8,460 square miles. Known to be very
scenic, it is one of only forty rivers in the United States to flow more than 200 miles without man–
made interference. The Flint River also is the home of a new species of fish, the Halloween Darter,
which is only found in the Flint, Chattahoochee, and Apalachicola Rivers. There are three
hydropower dams along the Flint: the Crisp County Power dam, the Flint River dam, and the Jim

The Chattahoochee River begins in the springs of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Georgia. It forms the
border between Georgia and Alabama with the final destination the same as the Flint's, Lake
Seminole. The Chattahoochee watershed area has a warm and humid temperate climate. The river
has quite a history with evidence of humans living along its shores since 1,000 B.C.E. Even up to
this day, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama fight over Chattahoochee water rights. The Chattahoochee
runs for 434 river miles and has a watershed area of 8770 square miles. Uniquely, this river is the
second southernmost trout habitat in the United States. It is also the most heavily used surface water
body in Georgia. Seventy percent of metro–Atlanta's drinking water comes from the Chattahoochee.
In fact, there are thirteen dams along the river. However, the Chattahoochee is also very polluted.
Polluted storm water is the primary cause of water quality problems. There are around 500 industrial
sites not complying with clean water laws along the river. As aforementioned, the Flint River and
Chattahoochee River both deposit into Lake Seminole. These two rivers leave the lake as one new
river, the Apalachicola

The Secret River
The core text chosen for this unit is the 2005 book The Secret River by Kate Grenville. The book is
part of a series set in early colonial Australia and follows the story of William Thornhill, a convict
colonist that settled on the Hawkesbury River in New South Eales. The book spans from William's
life in England, the voyage to Australia, convict life and settling in a new country. The text
dramatizes the British colonisation of Australia, providing perspectives on issues such as the
dispossession of Indigenous Australians from their land. The text and unit can be used to prepare
students for the HSC Standard English course such as Module B: Close Study of Test and concept

Mystic River
Mystic River
The Mystic River movie was directed by Clint Eastwood and released in 2003. The film was shot in
Boston as the director felt that it would best capture the essence of the culture in the environment
when planning the movie. The film was a true American classic and the director included this notion
in his planning. Based on a Dennis Lehane's novel by the same name, the film showed the rapid
change in diversity in the urban culture. Clint Westwood picked Boston because he wanted to bring
out the kind of living and realities people of the time had. There is a mystic river in the film, which
is highly symbolic in the story development.
The movie introduced three main characters, namely: Jimmy (Sean Penn), Dave (Tim Robbins), and

The Colorado River
We usually think of the Grand Canyon in terms of its rocks, and the story and history that they can
contain, spanning as far back as half of the Earth's age. There is more to this canyon though than the
rocks, as it is still active as a forever changing landform, due to the power of running water. The
Colorado River has carved out the Grand Canyon in just the last nine million years. In fact, the river
itself carries about half a million tons of sediment through the Grand Canyon each and every day.
There are a number of different river types that will be talked about, and how exactly they have
effected their environment and made changes in the landscapes. Valleys were once thought to have
formed independently as water flowed down a channel within the area of the valley. What is now
known, is that all rivers (located within valleys), combined with the power of mass wasting, have
formed the valleys by picking up sediment from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A delta is when the water is calm from this loss of velocity, and the sediment can build up creating
multiple dams and small river channels, in which the water and sediment can switch between which
river channel has a greater flow. This switch can vary though, as these stronger flows on different
branch–channels can last for long periods of time. Rivers have had enormous amounts of destructive
power. They have caused mass floods that have damaged towns and cities surrounding them, and
have also caused damage to families, taking lives. With all of this damage that has been caused by
rivers though, they have given back, with thriving life and people surrounding them for their beauty
and resources. One of the most important things they have done is carve out landscapes, which
create legacies to their existence. In fact, these rivers are the largest formers of the Earth's modern

Yellow River Jia
This document discusses solutions to combat the volatility of the Yellow River. In 1st Century BCE
China, the Yellow River was both an agricultural and urban necessity–but it was also a danger due to
flooding. An authority on the matter, Jia Rang, proposes multiple solutions intended to tame the
aggression of the Yellow River. He's aware of the importance of digging canals and notes three
benefits of digging: the movement of salt and silt leads to increased fertility, more rice can be
planted opposed to wheat, increasing production, and things can be reliably transported in the water.
He also notes three detriments: constant flood preventative measures exhausts people, evaporation
causes high humidity, sickness, and alkaline soil, and finally when the flood destroys the dikes,
people living nearby drown. Jia Rang made other suggestions made on his findings, but considered
the best option to be "...the building of large–scale dikes". ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

states, "Repairing old dikes by means of increasing the height and thickness would cost limitlessly,
and we would frequently encounter calamities. This would be the worst policy." He is honest but not
aggressive or passionate, which would be considered disrespectful. His comments on increased
productivity also make sense in to context of who he is talking

incased by rapids that crashed and flowed beneath the thick branches of the gnarled looking oak.
The Martens on the other hand didn't have time to turn and avoid the tree, soon enough they were
headed strait for it. All four of them hit a branch at full speed as I saw them grab a branch and hoist

To fully analyze Spring Creek, the collected samples must be representative of the depth and width
of this creek. To make sure that the width of all the samples was represented, the boat moved side to
side of the entire channel of as samples of the water surface were collected. To get samples that are
representative of the depth, the geologists sampled the upper 0.2 to 2.5m of the river using a three–
meter long tube with a diameter of five centimeters. The shores of the Spring Creek were also
sampled in order to determine if there was any deposition of heavy metals along the shores (Alpers,

The EPA used data that was collected from the SCDD by the United States Bureau of Reclamation

from dispersing throughout the Spring Creek water system. The installation of the dam allowed the

San Joaquin River Restoration Paper
People predict things all the time. The question to ask is do their predictions come true? The San

happen within the years of this restoration. What is intriguing to know is if their prediction came
true. If they did come true was it for better or for worse?
An important concept of this restoration project is the funding that went into it. "... Our federal and
state governments will spend hundreds of millions– if not billions of dollars in coming years..." (
McEween 2009) In the article 'River Plan Too Fishy for my Taste Buds' Bill McEween predicted
that our government would have spent "millions– if not billions of dollars" for this restoration

When the Canal was built towns all along the route from Buffalo to Albany prospered from the
revenue and the attraction the Canal brought with it. Whether the Canal was being used for business
people, immigrants, settlers of the region, or tourists, the border–towns all had some appeal to these
persons. After some time the state was continually asked to expand the Canal from the original route
to include connecting canal routes. However, the same towns along the route from Buffalo to
Albany had already been established along the lines of the original canal. These towns would need
to be relocated in order to obey these new requests. This presented a major problem because the
people in these towns had formed a life around the Canal and many of them made their income
based of the Canal. The inhabitants of the towns changed their mentality from not wanting the Canal
to invade on their lives, to it being an essential part of their lives they depended upon. The Erie
Canal provided an extremely fast source of transportation compared to other ones of that time. A lot
of the land that the Canal went through was uninhabited and therefore people weren't able to move

Canal also was a much cheaper source of transportation that was used by residents, tourists,

The Volga River
The Volga River is a riverine located in Europe, Russia in a federal subject of Russia, Astrakhan
Oblast. Its direct location is Longitude: 45°50′30″N Latitude: 47°58′17″E. Volgograd and Nizhny
Novgorod are important cities on the bank of the Volga. The Volga River is the largest river in
Europe in terms of length of length, discharge, and watershed. It starts in the Valdai Hills of north–
western Russia and flows approximately 3,685 km before creating this delta and pouring into the
Caspian Sea. The Volga River also contains a wide variety of flora and fauna. The river is split into
4 different sections: upper, middle, lower and the delta. The Volga basin is divided into four major
sections, including the Upper Volga, Middle Volga, Lower Volga, and delta. The delta is within the
Volga Delta–Northern Caspian Drainages ecoregion and had a length of about 160 km.
The Volga River is under investigation because dams upstream have altered the natural flow regime
of the river. Another reason is the mass amount of fishing and lastly the river is under investigation
because of the poor water quality.
The Volga River had its beginnings in the glacial Valdai Hills (225 meters above sea level), which is
located near Moscow in the northwest. During the 13th century, the southern part of the Volga River,
below Nizhny Novgorod, saw the invasion of Mongols, whose influence is evident in cities like

Bedrock River
If a river flows over bedrock, the bedrock restricts widening and lateral mobility which can distort
the shape of the bends in the river (Hooke and Yorke 2011). Substrate influences channel form at the
reach scale, with bedrock channel found to be narrower and deeper than alluvial channels
(Whitbread et al. 2015). This means that the substrate the river is flowing over does have an effect
on what the river is doing. The bedrock restricts widening and lateral mobility, which limits how fast
the river can meander. If the river is flowing over a substrate that is easily erodible, and then if it
erodes down to bedrock the river will become less sinuous.
Meandering rivers are not common in bedrock channels because bedrock channels are narrower and
deeper than alluvial channels (Whitbread et al. 2015). The alluvial channels allow the river channel
to become wide and therefore the river is able to meander because its channel is so wide. Changing
the type of bedrock can influence the width and depth of the river (Whitbread et al. 2015). The
maximum width/depth ratio decreases with increasing fracture spacing (Whitbread et al. 2015). This
is because the fractures create a weak spot in the rock that allows the river to erode into those
fractures. Adding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The substrate that the river flows over has an effect on the interaction between groundwater and the
bottom of the river. If the river is flowing over an impermeable substrate e.g. shale, mudstone, any

exist. The substrate has a major effect on the river. The substrate can determine what type of river is

Personal Essay : Overview Of The River
We carefully maneuvered our way down, and as we reached the bottom, the view opened up into a
beautiful river standing before me. I'll never forget the first time I saw that stretch of the river. The
summer sun glistened off the crystal–clear, slow–flowing water that drifted past tall hemlock–lined
banks, over and around protruding chunks of bedrock, and then sped up slightly as it splashed over a
small waterfall 20–yards downstream. For the most part, the river was between ankle and knee deep,
and as I looked across, I could see concentrations of cobblestone and many other anomalies which
provided places for gold to hide. It was the most perfect prospecting location I had ever seen, and as
I put my pack down, I wasn't sure if I was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As I slowly swirled the contents, the lighter material began to separate and flow over the edge back
into the river, leaving the heavier stuff trapped within the borders of my gold pan. I watched intently,
hoping to catch a bright yellow flash as the amount of material in my pan got smaller and smaller.
"Moment of truth" I thought to myself as I prepared to examine the last little bit of black sand that
was trapped within the riffles of my pan. As I fanned it out, I looked intently for a speck of yellow.
But, just like all the other times during my previous prospecting adventures, I was staring at a whole
bunch of nothing. "Did ya find anything" Mr. Crawford shouted across the river, to which I replied
"no sir – not a thing". "Well...that's a pretty good–looking spot, so you keep at it" he said as he
lowered his head and returned his focus towards his own pan. I appreciated his optimism, but given
my track record, all I could think was "here we go again". However, even though I was discouraged,
I knew in my heart that this spot held gold because the old man across the river from me said so.
Although I didn't know much about him at that time, one thing I could tell for sure was that he was a
man of character. Just like the gold we were hunting, character like that was hard to find but easy to
recognize when it was finally found. It was as solid as an old southern oak – deep–rooted,
unwavering, and unmovable – no matter what life throws at it.

Don River Watershed Case Study
Based on model tests, Civica will propose the modelling approach for Don River watershed. At the
proposal stage, Civica would propose two approaches. The first approach is to create two models
with different channel lengths. For small storms, the full length will be used. And for large storms,
the length of valley corridor will be used. As the calibration and validation storms are usually small
storms. The large storm model can't be calibrated. It also increase the difficulty to manage different
models. The second approach is to change the model algorithms to dynamically change to
corresponding channel length based on water level. A threshold water level could be given to each
channel element. If water level exceed the threshold water level, ... Show more content on

G. Ross Lord Dam controls the flow in West Don River. Civica will model it as storage element
with operational rules defined in "G. Ross Lord Dam Operations Maintenance and Surveillance

model calibration and validation.
3.3.9. Model Connectivity
Civica will check the model connectivity between each model component. It will be done by
overlaying model components with GIS data and check all of them from upstream to downstream.
For modelling platforms with GIS integration, the model components themselves are georeferenced
and the connectivity could be easily checked. Connectivity tools are usually available in these
modelling platforms. They could be utilized to make sure all components are connected properly.
Civica will submit the initial model to TRCA for review before proceeding to model calibration and
validation.

The Destruction Of The Ganges River In The United States
Pete Seeger sang, "sailing up my dirty stream, still I love it and I'll keep the dream ." All around the
world, rivers that are culturally and economically important are being polluted. Three examples of
this unfortunate phenomena are the Ganges River in India, the Han River in Korea, and the Hudson
River in the United States.
Hindus consider the Ganges to be the goddess Ganga personified. They believe that bathing in the
river is cleansing, resulting in the forgiveness of sins and salvation. All people, it is believed, should
experience this sacred river at least once in their life. Many important festivals take place along the
banks of this river. The Ganges River also irrigates a large area of farmland, where rice, sugarcane,
lentils and wheat are grown. Unfortunately, the Ganges River has been polluted by sewage, trash,
food, and human and animal remains, and industrial waste. Water–borne illnesses, including cholera,
hepatitis, typhoid and amoebic dysentery are widespread. Although a very important river to the
people of India, the Ganges is also a very polluted river. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Actively Meandering Rivers
Tabata et al. (2003) used hydraulic geometry to describe morphodynamics of anastomosing
Columbia river. Jain and Sinha (2004) discussed about causative factors and mechanism of fluvial
dynamics of anabranching Baghmati river system. In their study they have observed that
anabranching phenomena of Baghmati river only occurs along middle river course. The authors
suggested that inability to transport high sediment load due to gentle channel slope and dominance
of aggradation processes are responsible for anabranching of Baghmati river. Luchi et al. (2007)
investigated small alpine river to monitor morphodynamics of channel. Their study reveals that the
longitudinal variations in grain size and slope largely determine the braiding intensity of channel
thus it signifluences in channel morphodynamics. Schimitt et al. (2007) analysed morphodynamics

(2010) asserted that the channel morphological changes are not only associated with the spatio–
temporal variations in discharge and channel processes but it largely follows the episodic autogenic
feedback mechanism. Sinha and Ghosh, (2012) studied dynamics of river channel in eastern Ganga

factors of channel dynamics in the eastern Ganga plain. Nicholas (2013) overviewed

The River Of Renewal Summary
"River of Renewal" is a documentary that discusses a long–fought battle between American Indians,
pitted farmers, and commercial fisherman over 10 million–acre Klamath River Basin, which spreads
into the Oregon–California border. The documentary began by displaying graphics and videos of the
American Indians' side of the story. The Native Americans came from a humble background. They
just trying to catch enough salmon from the regional water bend. Unfortunately, the amount of water
was not enough to sustain the fish population, so the fish population declined and the Native
Americans lost a source of food as well as a part of their ceremonial culture. Then, the documentary

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of The Mekong...
As you most likely know, the Mekong river is quite essential to human and animal life in its river

these are food, water and increasingly, electricity. All of the previously mentioned needs seem
important but one clashes with the others. Hydropower is à renewable energy source which is rising
in popularity. Since hydropower is à renewable energy source it is not believed to be harmful to the

When the flow and force of à river is switched, sediment is blocked. This sediment plays à key role
in agriculture around the mekong river. Sediment is important in farming as it adds nutrients to the
soil and protects the mainland from being eroded by salt water from the sea. As salinity rates are
increasing because of the excessive dams along this river, the plants grown here are changing as
mentioned in an Al Jazeera English video on youtube. There is another natural force that is unsettled
by damming on the Mekong. This is the fish migrations as the dams block the migrating fish, many
of which are only found in this river. Four out of ten of the world's greatest freshwater fish are found
in the Mekong river, these are being threatened by dams directly as the fish that they consume are
being stopped from migrating and therefore they have à lower chance of getting their needed
amount of nutrition. This also directly affects us humans as mentioned earlier. Around 2.1 million
tonnes of fish are found on the Mekong river, these feed close to 60 million people. Approximately
600 species of fish on the Mekong river are migratory, these make up about 70% of the fish catch.

Why Do Rivers Cause Of War
While Rivers initially emphasizes his duty to his country, over the course of the novel he comes to
recognize the destruction his research has caused and continues to cause on young men. Rivers
commitment to his country first appears as Rivers "couldn't agree" more with Graves assessment
that "when you put on the uniform, in effect you sign a contract" to be loyal and fulfill one's duty to
their country (23). While Rivers was expressed his devotion to his country, he recalls an experiment
he performed where the patient stabbed River's arm in retaliation for the severe pain Rivers inflicted
upon him. Though Rivers "felt distress at the amount of pain he was causing," he still struggled in
his own internal debate between his "duty to continue the experiment and a reluctance to cause pain
(47)." Rivers' anxiety to "cause pain" develops as he realizes that by treating men like Sassoon, he
enables the British government to send men back to the source of their traumatic experiences. ...

Duty owed: While rafting down the Chilko River, Ron Thompson, a seasoned river guide with
thirteen years of experience, had his raft high side on a rock. When the raft high sided and all but
one of his guests fell out into the river. Due to the strong rapids five of the guests died. This is a
tragedy that should not have happened on the river considering it is not nearly close enough to being
one of the major rivers in Canada. The problem of where this happened on the river, Lava Canyon,
is about how long the rapids run. The water level was approximately 2 feet lower than it typically
ran. With water levels changing, rapids adjust throughout the river. When the raft hit a wake it
turned on its side and hit the rock that forced people out of the raft. Some of the people were able to

The way that the raft hit the rock forced people on the high side of the raft to fly out. The people
who were on the bottom side of the raft were washed out by the strong current of the river. Because
of Thompson being in the middle controlling the oars he was one of the first people to fly out of the
raft. Since he was thrown out of the raft, Thompson was unable to help with the situation at hand.
Injury caused by a substandard act: When the guests hit the water some were lucky enough to hit a
part of the river where they could swim to safety. Thompson was lucky enough to find an eddy in
the water, a place in the water that holds you into a spot because of a rock blocking the current.
Unfortunately, due to the length of the river, when the raft hit the rock and all of the guests went

the water constantly splashing in their face and from being pulled into the water.

The Long Profile Of A River
Introduction
In this investigation, I will be investigating the changes along the long profile of a river. In order to
do this, I will be collecting data and making observations at three different points along the river; the
upper course, the middle course, and the lower course.
The river which I will be conducting my observations would be on Bartley Water. Bartley Water is a
river going through the New Forest which is located in the south of the UK, Hampshire. The source
of the river begins from Bartley, 109m above sea level, and joins to its end at Eling, flowing into
Southampton Water. The river has a length of 27km and a catchment area of 40sqkm. It is a tributary
of the River Test. The river bed contains of a mixture of sand, silt and clay which can change as the
river behaves due to erosion, transportation and deposition.
The sites which I will be investigating on are:
Site one is at Buskett's Lawn, grid reference: 309109
Site two is at Woodlands, grid reference: 325006
Site three is at Eling, grid reference: 362124
The surroundings of these areas differ at each site. Site one is mostly rural areas whereas, when it
moves onto the last site, it becomes an urban area. These will affect on the course and direction of
the river and its characteristics.
The long profile of a river describes how the characteristics of the river vary from the upper course
to the lower course. A quicker and easier way to present this idea is through a Bradshaw Model (see

is undertaken in America; rivers play a role. Rivers offers habitat to aquatic animals and plants, the
source of water for irrigation and drinking, and other activities in the society. The rate, at which the
water in the rivers reduces, is a worrying situation, especially in the current society. What is more
interesting in this article is the rate at which humans engage in various activities which leads to the
problem of diminishing rivers. Most of the causes of the problems experienced in the river
boundaries are caused by encroachment of humans engaging in various developmental activities in

Aeration pumps have successfully been used in many rivers and dams to lower algal blooms, they
work by reducing nutrient load in the water column and mixing algae deeper into the water so that
they are deprived of light, other methods such as algaecides are also used as these are toxic to the
algae or cyanobacteria, but using algaecides can come with great risks and may cause more
problems. As a part of a redevelopment plan, the city of Adelaide has been looking at potential ways
to remove the algae and rubbish in the river, the plan is to lower the weir so that there is a flow of
water. This means that nutrients will be moving through and not concentrated in a singular spot,
reducing the likeliness of algal blooms. At the moment the most that are being done on carp is a ban
on releasing them back in the waterway, however, many people are working on an alternative. One
of these alternatives is the release of a 'carp herpesvirus' this acts as a biological agent introduced to
the waterway, wiping out large majorities of carp in one swift go. However, there are issues with this
once in the waterway it cannot be removed and carp may develop resistance and there would have to

The Battle Of The River
The river was an important avenue of approach for the Union army to reach and gain control of
Vicksburg. The Loess Bluffs bordering the Mississippi River provided excellent observation
positions for Confederate artillery to fire upon any enemy approaching via the river. Ships were
particularly vulnerable to their fire because of an oxbow north of the city's waterfront where ships
were forced to slow down to make the treacherous turn. The river approach afforded no
opportunities for cover and concealment.
The Confederate positions at Fort Hill and South Fort had clear fields of fire regarding approaching
gunboats that afforded them a great advantage.
The oxbow proved a challenging obstacle for Union approach, and was considered in the design and
placement of artillery positions by the Confederates at Fort Hill and the river batteries along the
waterfront. The Confederates placed additional obstacles in the form of explosive mines within the
waters of the river and canal to the north and south of the city. The U.S.S. Cairo sunk in the Yazoo
River Canal due to one of these mines during the winter of 1862 while on a mission to clear the river
of mines and rid the channel of Confederate batteries. The city of Vicksburg in itself was the key
terrain. This fortified city was positioned to protect the Mississippi River, and without taking
Vicksburg...the outcome of the Civil War would have completely different.

gives way to narrow inlets of muddy brown. At these thin arms, the water does not run
unaccompanied on its journey; instead, the brown body, soaked in a fleeting dream, permeated by a
notion of progress, joins as a fellow traveler. Carefully placing driftwood atop thick inner tubes, the

Whether it be a barbarian or a guerrilla, a rapist or a murderer, this militarized strip comes fully
equipped to meet them with bullets and barbed wire. If that fails to deter the brown body, than

"Guadalupe Hidalgo," that serves to sanitize, mask, and feign mutual agreement on this pernicious
partition. In reality, nothing has ever been agreed upon here besides hegemony, and that agreement
has always come at the barrel of a gun. Regardless, the norms that perpetuate this boundary are
clear. First, when Americans purchase or possess land, the plot, the acre, the square mile, and the
nation, all become part of one's body. As an extension of skin, flesh, and bone, a discourse makes
normal the vicious defense of the land as though it were sentient. When the house becomes the

The Report Of The Mississippi River

  • 1. The Report Of The Mississippi River The Report of the Mississippi River River, land and natural resources are important parts for people's daily lives, and its configurations represent how people affected the environment over 150 years. With the improvement of technology, people are able to utilize these technologies to remold the river levee; however, the impacts that came from people also brought some significant changes to the area. At the beginning, the inhabitants were some wildlife, such as ducks, geese, swans and wading birds. These animals utilized the river as a flyway and played above the river. Human beings did not enter this area until Native Americans had battles with intruders. The upper reaches of the Mississippi River have plenty of wetlands, which supports the basic living conditions for animals. Furthermore, the major meaning for first inhabitants was a location to settle down near the Mississippi river, because they were chased by the attackers. After they settled down near the Mississippi river, they set up their own tribes in this area. In general, most rivers are the cradles of civilization. For instance, the Changjiang river in China afforded the farmland, and people could obtain food resources by means of cultivating. The Mississippi river also had similar functions for the Native Americans, they had the opportunities to find the food resources, for instance, fish were the primary choice. In the report "Native ... • 3. Mississippi River Floodplains Floodplains contribute a crucial part in the ecology of the lower Mississippi River (LMR), but due to human interactions they have severely affected the ecological functions of the floodplains. By researching spatial analysis, this happens when a floodplain becomes isolated from the main stem of the river by constructing levees (in order to prevent major floods in populated neighborhoods) and changing landscapes (for example, bulldozing forests and paving over that land with concrete). The levees built by the federal government in the Mississippi River has influenced the floodplain by altering the flow of water and raises the water levels that goes into the surrounding water systems (Changnon, 1998). Wetlands act as natures sponge to absorb ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The levee system has been present along the Mississippi River since immigrants moved here from Europe (Kemp, 2002). People need water to survive and grow economically and the settlers of the Midwest found the Mississippi River, which was one of the biggest sources of fresh water. Access to the river provided a means to transport for developing commerce and industry, water for crops, and a source to drink. As floods swept away their livelihoods, a consensus grew that the Mississippi River would need to be artificially controlled in order to benefit fully from its proximity without the risks. Some levees were formed naturally by the Mississippi River's fluvial process. By building up on these natural levees was a solution to the flood problem. Eventually the Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) was put in control in creating and maintaining a way to prevent floods. This started the first system of manmade levee systems along the Mississippi ... • 5. East Verde River Case Study Below the Mogollon Rim near Payson runs the East Verde River, a waterway that is supplemented with discharge of water collected on The Rim at CC. Cragin Reservoir. According to Clay Thompson of the Arizona Republic, the area gets its name from the mechanization of the water's power through a metal water wheel fashioned from milk cans that was used by gold miner James "Dave" Greer to crush ore and supply a sluice box with water. The United States Geological Survey pinpoints the waterway's rate of flow at Camp Verde, Arizona, 60 some miles down the canyon. Median flow for June 1 hovers at 82 feet per second, though the canyon that guides it can become a raging torrent, once funneling 481 cubic feet per second through its rocky shoals on June 1 of 1992. Fortunately, our visit to the popular recreation area was marked with a serene 63 cubic feet per second chattering down the river. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The river plunges down weathered rock dotted with copses of juniper, sycamore, oak, and manzanita. Crags soar on each side of the canyon, funneling the river's flow over falls and delta–like redirections among interspersed jagged and polished rock beds. My daughters alternate between rushing ahead and falling behind as we hike the two miles to the destination falls and its accompanying pool of crystal water. The river itself alternates between barely shoe depth trickles, raging, frothy falls, and deep, crisp, and clear swimming holes that seem to be hollowed out of the living rock for the express purpose of completely immersing one's ... It is also the most heavily used surface water body in Georgia. Seventy percent of metro–Atlanta's drinking water comes from the Chattahoochee. In fact, there are thirteen dams along the river. However, the Chattahoochee is also very polluted. Polluted storm water is the primary cause of water quality problems. • 13. The Secret River The core text chosen for this unit is the 2005 book The Secret River by Kate Grenville. The book is part of a series set in early colonial Australia and follows the story of William Thornhill, a convict colonist that settled on the Hawkesbury River in New South Eales. The book spans from William's life in England, the voyage to Australia, convict life and settling in a new country. The text dramatizes the British colonisation of Australia, providing perspectives on issues such as the dispossession of Indigenous Australians from their land. Also adapted from Bartolo (2016) is the adaptation of an informal project where students create an online virtual exhibition based on the novel and their excursion to the museums. The film was shot in Boston as the director felt that it would best capture the essence of the culture in the environment when planning the movie. The film was a true American classic and the director included this notion in his planning. Based on a Dennis Lehane's novel by the same name, the film showed the rapid change in diversity in the urban culture. Clint Westwood picked Boston because he wanted to bring out the kind of living and realities people of the time had. • 19. The Colorado River We usually think of the Grand Canyon in terms of its rocks, and the story and history that they can contain, spanning as far back as half of the Earth's age. There is more to this canyon though than the rocks, as it is still active as a forever changing landform, due to the power of running water. The Colorado River has carved out the Grand Canyon in just the last nine million years. In fact, the river itself carries about half a million tons of sediment through the Grand Canyon each and every day. There are a number of different river types that will be talked about, and how exactly they have effected their environment and made changes in the landscapes. Valleys were once thought to have formed independently as water flowed down a channel within the area of the valley. What is now known, is that all rivers (located within valleys), combined with the power of mass wasting, have formed the valleys by picking up sediment from the ... In 1st Century BCE China, the Yellow River was both an agricultural and urban necessity–but it was also a danger due to flooding. An authority on the matter, Jia Rang, proposes multiple solutions intended to tame the aggression of the Yellow River. He's aware of the importance of digging canals and notes three benefits of digging: the movement of salt and silt leads to increased fertility, more rice can be planted opposed to wheat, increasing production, and things can be reliably transported in the water. He also notes three detriments: constant flood preventative measures exhausts people, evaporation causes high humidity, sickness, and alkaline soil, and finally when the flood destroys the dikes, people living nearby drown. Jia Rang made other suggestions made on his findings, but considered the best option to be "...the building of large–scale dikes". ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the same towns along the route from Buffalo to Albany had already been established along the lines of the original canal. These towns would need to be relocated in order to obey these new requests. This presented a major problem because the people in these towns had formed a life around the Canal and many of them made their income based of the Canal. The inhabitants of the towns changed their mentality from not wanting the Canal to invade on their lives, to it being an essential part of their lives they depended upon. Volgograd and Nizhny Novgorod are important cities on the bank of the Volga. The Volga River is the largest river in Europe in terms of length of length, discharge, and watershed. It starts in the Valdai Hills of north– western Russia and flows approximately 3,685 km before creating this delta and pouring into the Caspian Sea. The Volga River also contains a wide variety of flora and fauna. The river is split into 4 different sections: upper, middle, lower and the delta. The Volga basin is divided into four major sections, including the Upper Volga, Middle Volga, Lower Volga, and delta. The delta is within the Volga Delta–Northern Caspian Drainages ecoregion and had a length of about 160 km. The Volga River is under investigation because dams upstream have altered the natural flow regime of the river. Another reason is the mass amount of fishing and lastly the river is under investigation because of the poor water quality. The Volga River had its beginnings in the glacial Valdai Hills (225 meters above sea level), which is located near Moscow in the northwest. • 35. Bedrock River If a river flows over bedrock, the bedrock restricts widening and lateral mobility which can distort the shape of the bends in the river (Hooke and Yorke 2011). Substrate influences channel form at the reach scale, with bedrock channel found to be narrower and deeper than alluvial channels (Whitbread et al. 2015). This means that the substrate the river is flowing over does have an effect on what the river is doing. The bedrock restricts widening and lateral mobility, which limits how fast the river can meander. If the river is flowing over a substrate that is easily erodible, and then if it erodes down to bedrock the river will become less sinuous. Meandering rivers are not common in bedrock channels because bedrock channels are narrower and deeper than alluvial channels (Whitbread et al. 2015). The alluvial channels allow the river channel to become wide and therefore the river is able to meander because its channel is so wide. Changing the type of bedrock can influence the width and depth of the river (Whitbread et al. 2015). The maximum width/depth ratio decreases with increasing fracture spacing (Whitbread et al. 2015). This is because the fractures create a weak spot in the rock that allows the river to erode into those fractures. Adding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 57. Klamath River Basin Research Paper The Klamath River basin has been one the most productive watersheds and lake systems in the world. It houses over one–third of the world's pintail ducks and dozens of shoebird species. The basin has a plethora of salmon species and some of the largest trout in the world. The basin had four dams that offered hydroelectric power and water to the surrounding areas. This area was used to its full potential and had experienced serious distress to the biodiversity and damage to the aquatic ecosystem. In 2002, the river saw a die–off of over 33,000 adult salmon which really brought attention to the issue. The basin is dealing with low water levels that are polluted from the agriculture sector that surrounds the area. It houses 11 fish species, native ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Lava River Research Paper Duty owed: While rafting down the Chilko River, Ron Thompson, a seasoned river guide with thirteen years of experience, had his raft high side on a rock. When the raft high sided and all but one of his guests fell out into the river. Due to the strong rapids five of the guests died. This is a tragedy that should not have happened on the river considering it is not nearly close enough to being one of the major rivers in Canada. The problem of where this happened on the river, Lava Canyon, is about how long the rapids run. The water level was approximately 2 feet lower than it typically ran. With water levels changing, rapids adjust throughout the river. When the raft hit a wake it turned on its side and hit the rock that forced people out of the raft. Some of the people were able to swim for safety, including Thompson, but sadly five drowned. Duty breached: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The way that the raft hit the rock forced people on the high side of the raft to fly out. The people who were on the bottom side of the raft were washed out by the strong current of the river. Because of Thompson being in the middle controlling the oars he was one of the first people to fly out of the raft. Since he was thrown out of the raft, Thompson was unable to help with the situation at hand. Injury caused by a substandard act: When the guests hit the water some were lucky enough to hit a part of the river where they could swim to safety. Thompson was lucky enough to find an eddy in the water, a place in the water that holds you into a spot because of a rock blocking the current. Unfortunately, due to the length of the river, when the raft hit the rock and all of the guests went flying out, five were unable to swim to safety and while rolling down the river, they drowned due to the water constantly splashing in their face and from being pulled into the water. • 61. The Long Profile Of A River Introduction In this investigation, I will be investigating the changes along the long profile of a river. In order to do this, I will be collecting data and making observations at three different points along the river; the upper course, the middle course, and the lower course. The river which I will be conducting my observations would be on Bartley Water. Bartley Water is a river going through the New Forest which is located in the south of the UK, Hampshire. The source of the river begins from Bartley, 109m above sea level, and joins to its end at Eling, flowing into Southampton Water. The river has a length of 27km and a catchment area of 40sqkm. It is a tributary of the River Test. The river bed contains of a mixture of sand, silt and clay which can change as the river behaves due to erosion, transportation and deposition. The sites which I will be investigating on are: Site one is at Buskett's Lawn, grid reference: 309109 Site two is at Woodlands, grid reference: 325006 Site three is at Eling, grid reference: 362124 The surroundings of these areas differ at each site. Site one is mostly rural areas whereas, when it moves onto the last site, it becomes an urban area. These will affect on the course and direction of the river and its characteristics. The long profile of a river describes how the characteristics of the river vary from the upper course to the lower course. A quicker and easier way to present this idea is through a Bradshaw Model (see the diagram on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Trinity River has always acted as a natural barrier dividing northern and southern parts of Dallas, but this project will connect the two parts of this city that have never had a direct route to the other. Not only will these bridges join together two parts of Dallas, but it will also help to ease traffic along the busy highways of this city. The river will also be transformed into an area where different recreational activities will be held. The West Dallas Lake is long enough that boating, both competitive and recreational, can be held there for all people. The West Dallas Lake amphitheater will be an enjoyable place for the whole family to view special events like the rowing competitions as they unfold on the lake. The many trails and whitewater rafting courses will also stand as an exciting place for activity for all citizens of the city of Dallas. By creating all these new features around the Trinity River, Dallas residents will once again be drawn back down to the river. Citizens will enjoy the river that has given life to their great city for so many years. The Secret River is set in New South Whales, a penal colony in the South–East of Australia, during the 1900s. Along with British settlers, there are natives living in the forests of their colony. Throughout her novel the Secret River, Grenville uses Sal, Dickie and William Thornhill and their interactions with aborigines as a way to further investigate the aboriginal culture. Throughout the novel, Thornhill has many interactions with aboriginal people. "But the meaningless words poured over him" develops how the New South Whales natives speak a different language, foreign to British settlers. Anything coming out of their mouth is different and means nothing to the settlers. "There was the greybeard, caught in act, the spade in hand." explores how aborigines don't have a sense of what belongs to them and what belongs to the settlers. Aborigines take everything in their surroundings, as it rightfully belongs to them. The whole of New South Whales is their home and they have lived there for decades. The settlers do not understand this idea and especially William has the desire to own land, making him blind to this. He views his property as his own and does not want to share it with any one. Moreover, conversations between William and the native show how the aboriginals react to certain situations. For one, the situation above represents how aboriginals get ready to fight, when William shouts and slaps their eldest. "the spear up in his hand, poised on the balls of his feet, his face grim" portrays the natives as savage and violent. The aggressive stance presents the culture as being focused on violence and weapons. Their warfare consists of spears and hand–to–hand combat, rather than using guns, like the settlers. One can conclude that warfare and communication of the aboriginal culture is portrayed by Grenville, using William ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are three high risk flood vulnerable areas in this watershed; the Hoggs Hollow, Lower Don, and the Yonge and Elgin Mills area. A hydrological model has been established for Don River watershed and has been updated in 2004. After that, 12 years of meteorological and stream flow data has been collected and a number of significant storm events have occurred. Another hydrology update is deemed necessary to utilize the new datasets and to confirm the design requirement for a number of key projects. The hydrology update for the Don River watershed will follow the standard procedure for hydrological modelling including modelling platform selection, watershed delineation, model parameterization, model calibration and validation, and model simulation (scenario evaluation). • 73. River Torre Research Paper ONCE BEAUTIFUL RIVER GONE TO THE FISHES? If I said green, grimy and Adelaide, your mind would instantly race to the contaminated River Torrens. The River Torrens makes up a 85km stretch of the Murray–Darling Basin and is vital to the water security of Australia. But, yet it used to flow on a seasonal basis through and would have been used for leisure activities, such as swimming. If you looked at the River Torrens now you could never tell that's what it was used for, and instead, you can see the unsightly weir restricting water flow and the murky brown–green water plagued with environmental issues. Two of these such issues are algal blooms, caused by various cyanobacteria, and the introduction of carp into ecosystems. The effects of carp ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Aeration pumps have successfully been used in many rivers and dams to lower algal blooms, they work by reducing nutrient load in the water column and mixing algae deeper into the water so that they are deprived of light, other methods such as algaecides are also used as these are toxic to the algae or cyanobacteria, but using algaecides can come with great risks and may cause more problems. As a part of a redevelopment plan, the city of Adelaide has been looking at potential ways to remove the algae and rubbish in the river, the plan is to lower the weir so that there is a flow of water. This means that nutrients will be moving through and not concentrated in a singular spot, reducing the likeliness of algal blooms. At the moment the most that are being done on carp is a ban on releasing them back in the waterway, however, many people are working on an alternative. One of these alternatives is the release of a 'carp herpesvirus' this acts as a biological agent introduced to the waterway, wiping out large majorities of carp in one swift go. However, there are issues with this once in the waterway it cannot be removed and carp may develop resistance and there would have to be a massive clean–up undertaken to remove all the dead ... • 75. The Battle Of The River The river was an important avenue of approach for the Union army to reach and gain control of Vicksburg. The Loess Bluffs bordering the Mississippi River provided excellent observation positions for Confederate artillery to fire upon any enemy approaching via the river. Ships were particularly vulnerable to their fire because of an oxbow north of the city's waterfront where ships were forced to slow down to make the treacherous turn. The river approach afforded no opportunities for cover and concealment. The Confederate positions at Fort Hill and South Fort had clear fields of fire regarding approaching gunboats that afforded them a great advantage. The oxbow proved a challenging obstacle for Union approach, and was considered in the design and placement of artillery positions by the Confederates at Fort Hill and the river batteries along the waterfront. The Confederates placed additional obstacles in the form of explosive mines within the waters of the river and canal to the north and south of the city. The U.S.S. Cairo sunk in the Yazoo River Canal due to one of these mines during the winter of 1862 while on a mission to clear the river of mines and rid the channel of Confederate batteries. Deriving its name from the Nahuatl word Xochiatl, the Suchiate river is both a membrane and a vessel.
