River
1. Welcome to my presentation
My presentation is on
study of rivers; origin, history and role
of river in human civilization
2.
3. River?
A river is a running water body
Flows in the course of least resistance and from
higher to lower land.
It usually freshwater flowing towards an ocean, a
lake, a sea or another river.
Potamology is the scientific study of river.
4. Basic characteristics of Rivers:
Rivers have a wide range of water discharge.
Also have wider range of sediment discharge.
Rivers are curvy.
Rivers don't stay in one place.
5. Types of river on the continuity of follow:
a. Permanent streams:
Receive their waters mostly through seepage and springs
from subsurface water.
b. Intermittent stream(seasonal stream):
Receive their waters primarily from surface runoff. As
because the runoff seasonal, stream occurs during the wet
periods.
c. Interrupted streams:
Flow alternately on and below the surface of landmass.
6. Origin of stream :
a. By the stream itself, By runoff erosion.
b. By irregular volcanic lava flow and then finally by
the stream flow through erosion.
c. By glaciations
7. Source of stream water:
1. Precipitation (rainfall, snowfall)
Surface runoff due to precipitation is the most important
single source of water.
2.Underground water as seepage
dependent upon the climate, topography, permeability of
soils and rocks.
3. Springs
Springs in mountainous regions may become an important
source of stream water.
4. Lake or marsh
May be a source of stream water.
8. History of river:
Rivers can run for an hundreds of miles.
Begin their life high up in the mountains and hills
Heavy downpours of rain here and melting snow.
Once it begins to cut a valley it will continue to
carve out the same valley thousands of years.
The stream carries rocks, stones etc. Progressing on
its journey towards the sea, it collects more and
more water until it is big enough to be called a river.
9. Role of Rivers in human civilization:
I. Provide water, irrigation easy transportation.
II. The culture, tradition and values of the denizen
depends on river
III. The history of civilization is the history river of
such as Egyptians with the Nile .
IV.Livelihoods have always benefitted from the rivers.
V. Foundations for political centralization and
organization depends on river.
10. Gist of the topic:
Rivers are very important for fisheries resources .
Not only that we can’t imagine our advanced world
without river.
