The horror genre has become a popular genre among the movie industry. It has become a popular
genre since it has been evolving throughout the years it has been around, but one of its major climax
points was when the subgenre of zombies came into the mix. The zombie genre became very
popular in the year 1968 when it was first introduced in George Romero's film Night of the Living
Dead. Night of the Living Dead is one of the most prominent zombie films till this date especially
since it has introduced a new monster into the movie industry that nobody would have expected.
Romero's film intertwines with what Noel Carroll is telling us in his article "Why Horror?" that it is
all about the monsters that appear in the horror film. Noel Carroll's idea of the monster being the
main attraction in all horror films is somewhat true and it showed it when the audience went to
watch the film by George Romero since he introduced the zombies and it caught the audience
curiosity. As soon as he caught the audiences' curiosity with the zombies they would just be focusing

In Poltergeist, the world of ghosts that jumps at the family is not one considered ordinary or one that
would have any sort of rationale behind it. Many would not believe such a thing to be true no matter
if they had a house built on top of a graveyard or not. Ghosts and the supernatural do not exist so
this showing up in a film brings a sense of irrational thought which would likely keep the audience
of the horror film guessing for they do not know what to expect. However, in Texas Chainsaw

Within each of the films, the revenge narratives are both set around the female, as in 'The searchers',
Ethan and Martin aim to save the young girl Debbie, and in 'Unforgiven', Will, Ned and the

In Rich Schweitzer's article Born to Kill: S. Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket as Historical Representation
of America's Experience in Vietnam , he comments on the military's concern with: "how to inculcate
civilians reared in a western tradition, which emphasized the sanctity of life, with a willingness to
kill" (Schweitzer 64). Schweitzer's observation is most prominently debated in the beginning of the

stark and clinical. The recruits are all dressed in white which is a colour often associated with
innocence. The men lay on their bunks in a head to toe formation which parallels with the scene of
the mass Vietnamese grave in which the bodies are laid in the same manner and covered in white

The task was to create an effective advertising poster campaign for a specific film genre. I chose the
horror genre as I am very interested in the way they are put together and how they create an eerie
atmosphere by the technical codes (e.g. camera shots). For the primary research I created a
questionnaire that looked at all the different aspects used to create a successful horror poster. I based
my questionnaire around three different posters that were in the sub–genre that I wanted to research,
so I could see how effective the techniques were to the targeted audience. The movies were; Dark
Skies, The Blair Witch Project and Haunt. I asked specific questions about the camera shots and the
colour schemes used in the posters. The data collected from the questionnaire helped me identify the
most effective aspects of the horror posters. 90% of my sample said that they found a dark and gritty
colour scheme (generally black, grey, dirty white and blood reds) very effective as it" represented
the horror genre correctly". Another very effective technique was a contrast between light and
shadow. The audience found this effective because it created a "dark and unsettling atmosphere
throughout the poster". Everyone who completed the questionnaire said that this also complemented
the eeriness of the overall product. The questionnaire helped me identify the most prominent part of

In one scene they use high–key lighting to show more of an exciting and fantasy scene to stimulate
the audience's sense of excitement in the film. However, in other parts of the film low–key lighting
can be seen. Like when Dorothy meets the wizard for the very first time. These scenes create a
scary, suspenseful feeling for the audience. Another scene where they use low–key lighting is at the
beginning of the film when Dorothy is taken by the tornado. They use this Tanique to draw in the
adiance and make them cringe at what is going to happen next. When it comes to high key–lighting
