The Mystery of Death
William Shakespeare, the writer of Hamlet and many other well known plays, begins quickly define the weight of his death. Revealing so much of
the story in such a sort but clever way using symbolisms, imagery, and more . The rest of the soliloquy gives us much information on the play, and
readers find themselves looking back at it periodically. Just this one Soliloquy expresses the developed thought of Hamlet very well: the mystery of
death. his story with the most important speech. "Thus was I, sleeping, by a brother's hand Of life, of crown, of queen at once dispatched." (1.5.81–82)
stated by the Ghost using a hyperbole to Using an art gallery full of literary element to help open up the story, such as metaphors to define his
feelings. Even though the speech is made by the Ghost, the soliloquy is a good support to Hamlet's cause and actions. Shakespeare involves this
often repeated speech in the beginning of the book, so the audience can see the play unfold from a certain perspective. The crowd gets to first hand
understand the core of the story fully, and gets to watch the characters slowly come to knowledge of the murder of King Hamlet. Shakespeare does
this by trapping Hamlet in a corner, by giving him no proof or evidence, just knowledge. Creating an environment where Hamlet knows of the murder
but must bite his tongue as he has no proof to condemn Claudius. The Ghost's soliloquy

The Death Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare
Every action has an opposite and equal reaction. Many people believe in karma, the idea that personal actions dictate future endeavors, and do good
deeds to ensure that they live a prosperous life. The logic is that if a person commits negative actions, negative events will happen to them. A prime
example of this ideology is found in the play Hamlet. Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare, was composed in 1601 following the death of
Shakespeare's son, Hamlet. The play focuses on the prince of Denmark, Hamlet, as he discovers the truth about his father 's death and the events that
follow. Shortly after the death of Hamlet's father,Gertrude, Hamlet's mother, marries Hamlet's uncle, Claudius. Hamlet does not agree with the
marriage of his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To expand, Laertes responds to Hamlet by explaining, " in my terms of honor/ I stand aloof; and will no reconcilement/ Till by some elder masters, of
known honor,/ I have a voice and precedent of peace/ To keep my name ungored."(247–251). Laertes's tone is nothing of acceptance and disregards
Hamlet's apology. Laertes tells Hamlet that until a master or honor explains to him how to forgive Hamlet without tarnishing his name; he will not.
Laertes does not express forgiveness and plans to revenge the death of his father, which leads to his own death. If Laertes moves past the murder of
Polonius and does not plan to murder Hamlet, he would not parish. The inability of Laertes to forgive and attempt to understand Hamlet's apology
subsequently affect Laertes in the end. The idea that forgiveness and love produce positive karma while ignorance and hatred create bad karma shines
through during this scene. Ultimately, the negative actions of Laertes end in his downfall. The hostile and unforgiving tone of Laertes foreshadows the
deaths of himself, Hamlet, Claudius, and Gertrude that soon follow. Both Hamlet and Laertes can prevent their deaths, but because of their negative
actions, the equal and opposite reaction affects them and leads to their well deserved deaths. In addition to tone, irony highlights the idea of karma.
While Laertes and Hamlet fence, they

Procrastination Of His Father's Death In Hamlet, By...
Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, is a very complex play with many catechisms scholars study to this day. One such question relates to Hamlet's
procrastination for vengeance of his father's death. Confronted by the ghost of his father, Hamlet is instructed to "revenge his foul and most unnatural
murder" (Shakespeare I.v.31), yet he goes on to tarry the act for almost the entirety of the play. This brings about many ideas as to why he took such
delay and the effect it had on the characters involved and the play itself as a whole. Hamlet had promised the ghost "that [he], with wings as swift/ as
meditation or the thoughts of love/ may sweep to [his] revenge" (Shakespeare I.v.35–7). This, to an unfamiliar reader, would seem very straightforward,
yet Hamlet speaks with no cause. He procrastinates so much that, later in the play, the ghost reappears to remind him to "not forget. This visitation / Is
but to whet thy almost blunted purpose" (Shakespeare III.iv.136–7). His father literally comes back as a ghost to remind Hamlet that he is supposed to
be seeking revenge. Hamlet seems so uninterested in the idea of actually going through with avenging his father's death; rather, he dwells on it and falls
into depression, not acting on his anger or instruction whatsoever.
Hamlet himself does not recognize a reason for his dally. He is extremely upset by his inability to enact vengeance. It deeply upsets him that an actor
"in a dream of passion... should weep" (Shakespeare II.ii.579–87)

become a protector.
Protectors were always romanticised. They were heroes, they protected the nation from everything outside of it. Rex had always looked up to them
in admiration, ever since he was young. Then when he knew about the high death rate, he looked at them with even more reverence. They risked
their lives for the good of everyone. He found himself still wanting to be part of that, even after some of the fear had set in. He wanted to defend the

Paper #2 Troubled by royal treason, ruthless scheming, and a ghost, Denmark is on the verge of damage. Directly following King Hamlet 's death, the
widowed Queen, Gertrude, remarried Claudius, the King 's brother. Prince Hamlet optically discerns the joining together of his mother and uncle
as a "hasty and incestuous" act (Charles Boyce, 232). He then ascertains that Claudius is responsible for his father 's perfidious murder. His father
's ghost asks Hamlet to avenge his death and Hamlet concurs. He plans very punctiliously, ascertaining that he doesn 't kill Claudius when in he has
already been forgiven for his sins. Hamlet fortuitously kills Polonius, the King 's advisor, contemplating that it was Claudius hiding behind a curtain
spying on Hamlet and his mother. This drives Ophelia, Polonius ' daughter and Hamlet 's love interest, out of her mind. She then drowns in a
suspected suicide when she falls from a tree into a river. Laertes, Ophelia 's brother, teams up with Claudius and plots revenge on the strained prince.
Hamlet agrees to a sword match with Laertes, not realizing that Laertes will have a sharp, poisoned sword, while he will be given a blunted sword. To
make sure that their plan to kill Hamlet works, Claudius put poison in a drink to give to Hamlet,

How Does Shakespeare Present Horatio's Death In Hamlet
"Now cracks a noble heart. Good–night, sweet prince; And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest," (Act V, scene II, lines 397
–399.) Horatio, the prince
Hamlet's best friend in Shakespeare's Hamlet, spoke this to Hamlet moments after his tragic death. Hamlet itself is a tragic play that takes place in
Denmark. The play opens with the ghost of the former King of Denmark telling his son, Hamlet, how Claudius, King Hamlet's brother, killed him and
how Hamlet must now kill Claudius, who married Gertrude, King Hamlet's former wife, and took the throne. Throughout the middle section of the
play, Hamlet attempts to indict and murder Claudius through various ways. On one occasion, he is called to Gertrude's room, where Polonius,
Claudius' advisor, waits behind a facade to collect information about Hamlet's apparent madness. Hamlet mistakes Polonius for Claudius and kills
Polonius, setting the final portion of the play in action. As a result of Polonius' murder, Claudius sends Hamlet to England to be killed, but manages
to make his way back to Denmark to see his former love interest buried at her funeral due to the fact that she was Polonius' daughter and could not
deal with the trauma of his death. Laertes, Polonius' son, and Claudius hatch a plan to kill Hamlet with a poisoned foil tip and a poisoned beverage
because they want revenge for Hamlet's actions. The plan fails when Gertrude drinks the poison herself and dies. Laertes then scratches Hamlet with
the poisoned tip, while

The Death Of Macbeth By William Shakespeare
After the crowing of the new king, sickness begins to infiltrate throughout the land. What was once a healthy and strong nation suddenly becomes
stricken with terror and misfortunes. Macbeth portrays sickness throughout the play, infecting everyone who he comes in contact with. On the other
hand Edward, the king of England, preserves and strengthens those who come to seek asylum within his kingdom. Shakespeare uses the imagery of
sickness versus health to reveal the effects of evil through Macbeth and the effects of health through Edward, in his tragic play, Macbeth. The country
is slowing increasing in sickness fueled by the actions of Macbeth. Those who are still in the land describe it as, "...free from our feasts and banquets
bloody knives, do faithful homage and relieve free honors all which we pine for now..." (3.6.35–37). Lady Macduff knows of all this but continues to
reside in the sickened land saying, "To leave his wife, to leave his babes, his mansion, and his titles in a place, from whence himself does fly?...So runs
against all reason"(4.2.6–8,13).She became a part of this saddened land and holds her possessions as more important than her own life and the lives of
her children. Considering the sickness that surrounds her, she ends up defenseless when murders come to kill her. All she reverberates is, " I have done
no harm...accounted dangerous folly. Why then alas do I put up that womanly defense..." (4.2.72,74–75). Since she has no knowledge of what to do she
dies.

The Motif Of Suicide And Death In Hamlet By William...
In Hamlet's first soliloquy, he reflects upon the major motif of suicide and death while speaking to himself. Hamlet's father has just been murdered and
his mother has now married Hamlet's uncle who is the new king. This makes Hamlet contemplate suicide by saying, "Or that the Everlasting had not
fix'd his canon 'gainst self–slaughter! O God! O God!"(Shakespeare I.II.131–132) The phrase "the Everlasting had not fix'd his canon 'gainst
self–slaughter" connotes that Hamlet is mad that there are rules against suicide or "self–slaughter" which demonstrates how the motif of death and
suicide are shown. By "Everlasting", shakespeare is talking about how God has made these rules of suicide so they must not be broken. Repetition of
the "!" and "O God" shows how angry and emotional he really is about the death of his father and thoughts of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Hamlet continues to think about suicide when he says, "How weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable seem to me all the uses of this world!"(Shakespeare
I.II.133–134) All of the words "weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable" have negative connotations. Hamlet uses these words to express how he thinks this
is how his life if, showing how he thinks his life is pointless. Hamlet says "unprofitable seem to me all the uses of this world!" which denotes that
everything in the world is aimless, this results in even more thoughts about suicide and death. Also the use of the "!" again, displays how strongly he
feels about these suicidal thoughts. Hamlet then talks about how he does not like his uncle for becoming king and his mother for marrying him so

Death in William ShakespeareВґs Hamlet Essay
In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, Hamlet struggles with the abrupt death of his father at the hands of his uncle. It is in the very beginning
of the play that Hamlet voices his opinion that death would be a peaceful release. But as the play progresses his attitude begins to slowly doubt the
serenity in death. Hamlet had been surrounded by death but had yet to come face to face with it, escaping the lessons the world was trying to teach
him. It is within Act 5 scene 1 that Hamlet has a direct confrontation with death, manifested primarily through the discovery of Yorick's skull, a dear
friend from his green world childhood. It is through this experience that Hamlet realizes that death is the true equalizer, that all men are the ... Show

It is not until Hamlet stumbles upon another grave in which he finds a particular skull belonging to Yorick, the king's jester whom Hamlet admired.
He described him as a "fellow of infinite jest and of most excellent fancy." The skull or Yorick is a symbol and physical reminder of the finality of
death. By using suggestive diction like "aching bones" Shakespeare is trying to tell the reader that a significant change in character has occurred.
Hamlet, having been so impacted by the discovery reveals a growing interest with the deathly aspect of physical decomposition.
He begins imagining Yorick's face decomposing on the skull, and looking at the place where his "lips that I have kissed" used to hang. He realizes his
own mortality, and begins thinking of great leaders dying, saying "Alexander died, Alexander was buried, Alexander returned into dust; the dust is
earth; of earth we make loam and why of that loam, whereto he was converted, might they not stop at a beer–barrel?" He continues, thinking of other
great men, imagining the dust from Julius Caesar being used to "patch a wall". In Shakespeare's great tragedy, Hamlet loses his innocence and
ignorance to the reality and finality of death by witnessing the powerlessness of the person once they have

How Does Shakespeare Present The Theme Of Death In Hamlet
Death, the Main Plot of Hamlet
In 1601, shortly after the unexpected death of his son, William Shakespeare wrote the tragedy Hamlet. There are many issues that are brought up and
debated during the play. One of the key points that Shakespeare explores in depth throughout the play is death and its complex nature. The protagonist,
Hamlet, is obsessed with the idea of death and throughout the play he experiences the loss of those he loves and contemplates even his own death.
Shakespeare's theme of death throughout Hamlet begins in the opening scene. Shakespeare begins examining death, when the ghost of the Old Hamlet
shows himself. The ghost reveals to Hamlet that it was Claudius who murdered him, in order to marry Gertrude and become the king. ... Show more

In this scene Hamlet essentially is reflecting on what afterlife holds and if it will be easier to escape the world which he exists in. Hamlet decides
that the only reason that people choose to live is because of their fear of what they will find in the afterlife.
Hamlet's feeling of betrayal from his mother, Queen Gertrude, and his uncle, Claudius is what sparked the main cause of his actions. As he says, "So
long? Nay then, let the devil wear black, for I'll have a suit of sables. O heavens! Die two months ago and not forgotten yet" (3.2.117–119). Hamlet is
stating how he feels betrayed that his father died just two months ago, and his mother has already so easily moved on with his uncle. The combination
of already being upset about the death of his father and the betrayal from his mother and uncle are what cause Hamlet to become a murderer and

drive people's actions, however Death is still a mystery as the whole human race still wonders how it acts on people's lives and what is next after Death.
In the play Hamlet, Shakespeare uses the theme of Death to drive the characters actions, and portrays the tragedy through their dialogues and significant
symbols to create a tragic atmosphere.

When Polonius is alive, Ophelia is absolutely obedient and dependent on him "Ill teach you: think yourself a baby" (I.iii.110 p1338). It is possible
to say that Hamlet indirectly kills Ophelia through slaying Polonius. With her suicide, Laertes her brother is given even more reason to kill Hamlet.
In the chain of Death, the following one is Laertess. He is driven to face his fate by Claudiuss manipulation and Hamlets carelessness. Hearing the
news of Poloniuss death and his sisters going mad leading to her suicide; he goes mad and thirsts for Hamlets blood. However, just how Hamlet
avenges his fathers death with the price of his life, Laertes too will avenge his family in exchange with his youth in the grave.
Death itself is also presented through Hamlet the protagonist character. Although at first he fears Death, slowly he becomes the sword of Death;
and then he becomes a represent of Death after killing Polonius and then in the graveyard scene in Act IV (Boyce, Hamlet 1). Hamlet fully realizes
that everyone's fate is death, regardless of status or wealth. He also realizes that no matter what a person does in life, in death, that person is merely

Why Does Shakespeare Use Of Death In Hamlet
Hamlet is a play about confusion that often references death. As we know, Hamlet, kills Polonius, Laertes, and Claudius. He also plays a part in the
suicide of his love, Ophelia and the poisoning of his mother. Hell, Hamlet even dies himself. It was made clear by Shakespeare that Denmark was a
bad place. Shakespeare uses the words dead and death throughout the play, but with intentional power at the beginning as evidenced by the repetitive
manner in which the words were utilized.
The word dead can meaning no longer alive or absolute. We see this in the play with the description of aghost as "absolute quiet or still". Ironically,
when referring to the ghost, it is not completely dead. The play also spoke of the "dead hour" which for this

The author forwardly proceeds to the introduction of Death, as a personified character. According to Britannica Academic, "Personification is a

William Shakespeare 's ' The Death Of Claudius '
No surprise, this final Act of Hamlet is as mysterious, ambiguous, and controversial as those that precede it. The play begins rather straightforwardly, if
ironically, as a revenge tragedy – Old Hamlet's ghost spurs his son to revenge – and it would seem that Act Five, like the Act Fives of all major
revenge tragedies preceding Hamlet, should fulfill this initial plotline. Indeed, in Act Five Hamlet kills Claudius – finally. But he does so in such a
roundabout, half–cocked, off–hand way, we wonder whether this really counts as revenge. The death of Claudius certainly lacks the poetic justice that
vengeance seems to require. What on earth is Shakespeare trying to do with this strange play – why doesn't he give it a proper ending?
Many of the earliest extant critics of the play, those of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, found the strange and abrupt manner of Hamlet's
revenge to be as puzzling as we might. These critics often found fault with the play's lack of moral meaning. After all, if Claudius was wrong to kill
his brother and marry his brother's wife (and surely he was), shouldn't the lethal correction of these crimes feel more satisfying, more "right," than it
does in this play? Samuel Johnson, writing in 1765, voices critical dissatisfaction quite clearly: "The poet is accused of having shown little regard to
poetical justice, and may be charged with equal neglect of poetical probability. The apparition left the regions of the dead to little purpose; the

How Does Shakespeare Present Death In Hamlet
William Shakespeare's Hamlet– Signifying Death Regardless of a person's age or literary preference it is undeniable that William Shakespeare had a
flair for composing dramatic tragedies. Tragedy, when evident is a powerful underlining theme which portrays the qualities of the human capacity. In
one of Shakespeare's most brilliant plays, Hamlet, tragedy is portrayed through the protagonist's constant contemplation of suicide. Shakespeare often
alludes to powerful images of death by using pathos and bereavement in life to be inconsequential. In the play, Hamlet, William Shakespeare produces a
tragedy which illustrates the suggestion of suicide and the imagery of death as solutions to problems through Ophelia's demise, the minor ... Show more

After ending her relationship with Hamlet, and having her father killed by her previous lover, Ophelia's character begins to change. A flower can
resemble Ophelia's character; for even the most beautiful flower can be deceiving, and this is first seen in her character as a calm, delicate, and a
controlled young lady (1.3.45–51 & 136). Once her father passes away and Hamlet is out of reach her state of being becomes confused, ill, insane and
bitter (4.5.46–64). Ophelia starts wearing flowers like rosemary which is to be worn in memory (4.5.173). It is evident by the course of events that
Ophelia commits suicide and her demise results from her own actions.
Secondly, throughout Denmark inevitable justice is proficient with the minor characters that shape the reflection of death. One of the first minor
characters that play a major role to reflect death is Horatio. Horatio is the definition of a true friend. He remains a complex character that is honest and
loyal to his companion Hamlet (3.2.56–57). By the end of the play, Laertes stabs Hamlet with a poisonous sword (5.2.387–89). Dearly honoured by
Hamlet, Horatio insists on drinking what is left from the poisonous cup which killed Gertrude (5.2.330–32). In act five, scene two Horatio declares to

Shakespeare 's Hamlet
Throughout 'Hamlet' we have the images of death, decay, rottenness, and corruption embedded in the story. The imagery that Shakespeare uses in
hamlet relates directly with the plots of the play perfectly. The corruptions images are illuminated in the beginning with Claudius own actions. The
characters use metaphors of disease in the connection to sickness and rottenness. Within "Hamlet", Shakespeare makes a number of references to
Denmark 's tainted state due to the deceitfulness that lies within. Shakespeare uses death and decay to exemplify the death of the characters, and the
decay of these characters that comes with those deaths, as well as the decay and death of morals and the death and decay that comes of political
corruption of the government of Denmark. Denmark is repeatedly defined as a physical body made ill by the moral corruption of Claudius. They don
't know that Claudius isn 't legitimate throughout the play; characters draw clear links between the moral lawfulness of a ruler and the health of the
nation. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern state their beliefs that health of a country is tied to the legitimacy of the King. Because death and decay are so
prevalent throughout Hamlet, it could be said that Shakespeare intended for them to be a major theme. This is further relevant then in the graveyard
scene; the first scene, of the last act is unexpectedly takes place in a graveyard, where a gravedigger and his assistant are discovered at work. From their

The Death Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare
Imagery is an integral part of literature. The protagonist, Hamlet, his mother Queen Gertrude and her husband King Claudius, along with Hamlet's
love interest Ophelia are all affected by human sin through the evocation of sickness and rot. Sin, the driving force of the play, impacts each character,
decaying his or her mind, resulting in the emotional and physical demise of each character and the decay of the state of Denmark, which has become
"rotten" after Claudius poisons his own brother and weds his sister–in–law. William Shakespeare's tragic playHamlet has explicit imagery evoking
sickness, death, and decay. The use of death, rot, and sickness as images illustrate the sinful human nature of the characters and the corruption of
Denmark. Death as an image in Hamlet is used to present both the effects of sinning on Hamlet and Denmark's corruption. In the opening act, Hamlet
speaks to Claudius and Gertrude regarding his melancholy attitude due to his father's murder (which was committed by Claudius); when the King and
Queen leave, Hamlet says in an aside that he wishes that God had not made suicide a sin. During his speech, Hamlet says that he wishes his "too
sullied flesh would melt" meaning he wishes he could kill himself to get rid of his depression (1.2.133–134). This imagery of melting flesh is a
representation of death that shows Hamlet's pain. In addition, death imagery is seen during Laertes's speech to Ophelia regarding his concerns about
Hamlet's intentions.

and reminisce the times he had with the jester, Yorick, he saids, "Alexander died, Alexander was buried, Alexander/ returneth to dust, the dust is earth,
of earth we/ make loam–and why of that loam, whereto he was/ converted, might they not stop a beer barrel?"(5.1.189–192). Hamlet uses the allusion of
Alexander to compare to the common dust thats all around us. Shakespears is telling how deaths even for the great people, Alexander the Great that

We are die, buried, then we turn into dust. Shakespeare furthers the concept of death questioning how can that dust be Alexander, the material that
makes all of us. This makes Hamlet ponder when he picks up Yorick shull. This goes back to the idea that death is in our nature. Furthermore, the
death motif is furthered by the exchange Claudius has with Hamlet. When Claudius question Hamlet on where Polonius's body is, Hamlet
answers,"worm is your only emperor for diet. We fat all/ creatures else to fat us, and we fat ourselves for/ maggots. Your fat king and your lean beggar
is but/ variable service–two dishes, but to one table. " (4.3.23–26). Hamlet brings the concept of the cycle of life where we die to feed other so that we
can eat them. The "worms" are important because they represent decay due to the fact that they are the decomposers that give nutrients to the world.
Shakespeare wrote to tell how nature requires us to die as this is our fate. When we die, worms feed on us so that the world can feed the world. Not
only this , but Shakespeare concluded how even beggars and kings have the same fate as humans to

The Theme Of Death In Hamlet By William Shakespeare
Death can be defined as; the permanent and irreversible cessation of the vital functions that result in the end of one's life. Death itself can have many
different causes such as disease, old age or even something as gruesome as murder. In the Elizabethan era, it seems as though murder was commonly
used to solve problems as in several of William Shakespeare's plays, characters are killed so that more dominant characters can obtain what they truly
desire. In William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet death is a prominent theme that is explored in depth throughout the play. Within the play, there are
many examples of death; such as the suicide of Ophelia, the unnecessary murder of numerous characters and even Hamlet's untimely death itself. ...

Along with the severe impact the death of Hamlet's father has on him, another visible way the theme of death is revealed is through Hamlet's
developing fascination with death. When Hamlet comes across the gravediggers digging up graves in act 5 at first he is disturbed but then he slowly
becomes fascinated. Hamlet wonders how someone who once meant so much in life could be so easily forgotten to rot in the ground after their death
"–Where be your gibes now, your gambols, your songs, your flashes of merriment that were wont to set the table on a roar?"( A5 S1 L173–174). When
they come across the skull Hamlet is shocked to learn that it is that of someone he once knew, taking it in his hands and gesturing to where the lips
he had once kissed had been, hauntingly asking the lifeless bones . He is curious about how long a body takes to decay and questions the grave
diggers as the answers they provide him both intrigued and disgusted. The skull acts as a physical image and reminder of the absolute finality of
death in this scene, Similar to Hamlet's fascination, the theme of death is also shown in this play through his revelation of the finality of death. In the
fifth act of this play Hamlet witnesses death on the deepest level yet as he stares death in the face while holding the skull of Yorick. At this point
Hamlet begins to see life's impermanence "... Alexander died, Alexander was buried, Alexander returneth to dust, the dust is earth, of earth we make

How Does Shakespeare Present Curleys Wife's Death
Curley's wife's death is presented through irony; a structural choice that Shakespeare also uses to build up Lady Macbeth's death. Curley's wife's
constant require for attention, and some could even say self–obsession was her downfall, which resulted in her death. After Lennie began to forcefully
play around with her hair, Curley's wife repeatedly told him to not ''muss it up'' (mess it up), but Lennie didn't know much and ended up accidently
killing her. This is significant as Curley's wife's physical appearance was everything to her and, maybe, if she just allowed Lennie to play with her
hair for a while, after all, she did give him permission to stroke it, and not been so bothered about it being messed up a bit; then maybe she would

After the murder, Macbeth says ''will all great Neptune's ocean wash the blood clean from my hand?'' in which Lady Macbeth assures her husband
by telling him that 'a little water clears us of this deed', meaning a little bit of water will clear the blood from their hands. Shakespeare, here, uses
the blood on her hands as a metaphor for the guilt she has placed on herself. As, a few days later, Lady Macbeth begins to go totally insane over the
blood that was supposed to be washed away using 'a little water'. Shakespeare ultimately shows Lady Macbeths loss of power and also her mental
confusion when she speaks in prose, she starts to see hallucinations of the blood on her hands and screams 'out, damn'd spot! Out, I say!' which
eventually leads her to her death. This is ironic as something that she thought would never harm her was the exact thing that caused her life to end,
which is the same situation with Curley's wife and her hair. Nevertheless, Lady Macbeth is the only main character in Shakespeare's tragedies to die
whilst not speaking in verse which signified her fall from

The Death Of Antigone By William Shakespeare
When Medea poisoned and burned Jason's wife, Creon committed suicide. He tried to save his daughter, but by doing so, he also died. In the play it
states, "[Creon] moaned, and wrapped her in his arms, and kissed her, crying "Oh, my poor unhappy child, what god dishonors you? What god
destroys you? Who has taken you away from me, an old man who has one foot in the grave? Let me die with you, child (1228–1233)." From this
passage, one can assume that his child is his last thing he is living for. He claims to be dying, and he knows her death is what will kill him. Knowing
this, he decided to die with his daughter.
While Creon in Medea had nothing to live for after his daughter's death, Creon in Antigone did not decide to die after losing his entire family. When
Creon decided to kill Antigone, it started a chain of events that lead to the death of his son and his wife. Antigone, not wanting to starve to death at
the hands of Creon, decided to end her own life before she let Creon get his way. By not allowing Antigone to bury her own brother, Creon has taken
away something from Antigone that she cannot replace. She says in the play, "I may have another husband if the first should die and get another
child from a new man if I'm a widow. But my mother and my father lie in the land of death, and there is not ground to grow a brother for me now
(909–912)." Antigone had a brother taken away from her. She was not going to allow Creon to take herself away from her. She

Is Death Inevitable? By William Shakespeare
Is Death Inevitable? Every living thing must die. It is physically impossible for a living person or organism to escape the face of death. On the other
hand, one may argue that when someone or something dies their spirit and soul remains alive. William Shakespeare is a well–known poet who wrote
many poems about love and death in his time. To be exact Shakespeare perished four hundred and thirteen years ago in year 1603; however, the real
question should be ¬¬¬did Shakespeare really die? Did Shakespeare try to cheat death with his writing? He may have died about four hundred
years ago, but his poetry is very much alive in the world today. Death is imminent; on the contrary, did William Shakespeare intend to cheat death with
his writing that has been very much alive since first written. Most of Shakespeare's poem have an extremely deep meaning behind what is actually
written. It is like a code you must really analyze before you get it. For example, the couplet in Sonnet 65 reads, "O, none, unless this miracle have
might, That in black ink my love may still shine bright." Throughout Sonnet 65, Shakespeare mentions death and how nothing can escape it. Not metal,
not rock, not dirt, not water, not beauty, not anything. It will all end with time. According to Shakespeare everything will perish except the "that in
black ink my love may still shine bright." He is clearly stating that his words of love will not die and shine bright if written down. Is Shakespeare

The Death Of William Shakespeare 's Romeo And Juliet
David was not the only artist to be fascinated and inspired by historic suicides. Suicide is not an uncommon subject of paintings, or any of the arts for
that matter. On the contrary, suicide can be glorified to a certain extent, in the way that a novel or film can romanticize the act without the brutality or
consequences being addressed. Suicide can appear heroic in the face of a evil. It can appear to be a triumphant escape from a cruel world. Suicide can
even look romantic when portrayed as the conclusion to a love story, like in Romeo and Juliet, a masterpiece by the beloved William Shakespeare.
Death itself is dramatic, but there is something more to beyond the gruesome or romantic aspects of death, particularly when it comes to suicide. The
Death of Socrates manages to grip the viewer with its dramatic climax to death, yet saying something more with it 's imagery.
The Death of Socrates effortlessly channels utter despair, and yet, unwavering defiance. The painting comprises of the moments just before Socrates

his left hand high up, finger in the air in staunch defiance, all while his right hand hovers over the cup of Hemlock. The sunlight beams through a

The Death Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare
There are only a handful of experiences that everyone must practice, and one of the most provocative is death. For some, death is fearfully avoided,
but for others, it is constantly sought after. Suicide is a topic that impacts all kinds of people, so much so that it is often addressed in literature. For
real people and fictional characters such as Shakespeare's Hamlet, prince of Denmark, thoughts of self–harm are brought about by overwhelming
emotions that became almost too heavy to handle alone. For others, such as Hamlet's companion Horatio, these thoughts originate when a person
allows one singular, but extremely powerful, emotion to surround and consume him. In his play Hamlet, William Shakespeare explores suicide through

They attempt to suppress Hamlet's true emotions in order to cover up their pure guilt. All at once, Hamlet is abandoned by his father, his mother, and
his uncle and stepfather to cope with his chaotic sentiments of grief, disgust, anger, disappointment, and depression alone. This whirlwind of emotions
quickly turns into thoughts of yearning to escape the torture of a life in his circumstances, thinking to himself, "How weary, stale, flat, and
unprofitable seem to me all the uses of this world! Fie on 't, ah fie! 'Tis a weeded garden" (1. 2. 137–139). The world that Hamlet lives in is full of
nothing but evil and torturous emotions that he does not want to have. The collection of overpowering emotions can become difficult for a person to
handle, particularly when coping with little to no support system. Hamlet had suffered death of a role model, only to suffer death again, within himself.
Methods of physical self–harm are never mentioned by Hamlet but the thought of dying seems infinitely more pleasurable to him than to continue his
life under his new parents. His personal and expressive self–destruction is not caused solely by his twisted familial struggles however, as Hamlet finds
himself caught in a storm of emotions brought about by his peers as well.
Hamlet also suffers one of the greatest emotionally–destructive experiences through his passionate love for Ophelia. Overtaken with Ophelia's great

William Shakespeare's Hamlet has a multitude of not only characters, but also many different character scenarios going on as well. The play begins
with us learning of the death of Hamlet's father, King Hamlet, and the marriage of Hamlet's mother, Gertrude, to her now ex brother–in–law Claudius.
We later discover that the now king, Claudius, killed his brother and are left to question if he and Gertrude had been having an affair the entire time
and whether Gertrude had a hand in King Hamlet's death. Through two film depictions of the play, one directed by Kenneth Branagh and one starring

Gertrude of the film starring Gibson. While Branagh's Gertrude seems to play the part of a happy wife, she also looks as if all her words and
actions towards Claudius are forced, but her look upon Hamlet seems to be that of unconditional love. While both film versions depict Hamlet's
character well, Gertrude's is not. Such as in Hamlet when Gertrude is met by Hamlet in her room and he begins discussing the way of his father's
death. Gertrude is portrayed as more of a lady with questionable morals when she kisses Mel Gibson in such a way a woman kisses her husband,
which is not acted out in Branagh's version. In this scene, Hamlet says:

The Death Of Romeo And Juliet By William Shakespeare
Who is to Blame? Good Morning, members of the Jury. While it may be a popular belief that there has 'never been a tale of more woe than that of
Romeo and Juliet', the facts are less subjective. Many say that love brings peace and affection, but when taken to the extreme, it can lead to
tragedy and despair. This is shown evidently in the play Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare. Arguably the most famous love story of
all time, the play tells the tale of a boy and a girl from opposing families who meet and fall in love and after being married for 3 days, they choose
to kill themselves, rather than live without each other. It is difficult to place the blame entirely on just one person for the death of Romeo and Juliet,
because there were several aspects that played a part in their death and because their lives had been controlled, criticized, pressured and influenced by
many people. However, the people who would be most influential in the death of the 'star–cross'd lovers' would without a doubt have to be the parents
of Romeo and Juliet, Lord and Lady Capulet and Lord and Lady Montague. The first reason that the parents are to blame is because of the eternal feud
between the Montagues and Capulets which prohibits the love of Romeo and Juliet and ultimately results in their unfortunate deaths. Secondly, Lord
and Lady Capulet decided, pressurised and forcefully tried to get Juliet married to Paris, causing Juliet making rash decisions and eventually resulting

How Does Shakespeare Present Death In Hamlet
William Shakespeare's Hamlet is a revenge tragedy full of the looming of death. Prince Hamlet, solely living to avenge his late father's death,
seemingly goes mad in the process. The reader not only gets in the mind of the grieving prince, but is also let in on the multiple treacherous and
murderous plans of practically every character. In this light, we are brought on a journey of what death symbolizes. Throughout the play, Shakespeare
depicts death as impending, complex, and even frivolous.
Death is introduced in the play from the beginning. Shakespeare shows how complex death is by simply using a ghost; it confuses the characters. The

For example, the skull Hamlet found with Horatio was Yorick's, the late court jester's. It was a gruesome "ha ha" moment for Shakespeare. In Act 5
Scene 1, Hamlet recollects, "Where are your shafts of wit now, your playful tricks, your songs, your quick–witted quips that used to set everyone
roaring at the table? Not one left to mock at your own grinning? Down–in–the–mouth, are you?" (271) Shakespeare goes even further to depict death as
a joke by killing off all major characters in glib methods. Hamlet accidentally kills Polonius, Ophelia drowns, Gertrude drinks poison Claudius intended
for Hamlet, Laertes cuts himself by his own sword, Claudius is then poisoned and Hamlet dies right after getting revenge. Throughout Hamlet,
Shakespeare hones in on what death truly is. He illustrates it's nearness, it's complications, and it's facetiousness in a manner that is his own.

Meanings Behind Motiffs of Death in Hamlet by William...
Throughout the play, Hamlet is obsessed with the idea of death due to his determination for vengeance for his father and death seems to follow
wherever he goes, and his, "pursuit of an essentially immoral act of revenge killing...may result in his eternal damnation" (BOOK 2). Shakespeare uses
the motif of death to show how if one obsesses over an idea it can eventually cause the corruption of the environment around him.
The motif of death in Hamlet is used early on in the play when the ghost of Hamlet's father appears. His friends warned him about how listening to
the ghost could be a bad idea, most likely due to the fact that ghosts were seen as bad omens. With the ghost initiating Hamlet's curiosity in how his
father died, the unhealthy interest in the death of his father, "prove(s)dangerous to him, and his genius...(to exaggerate a little) become(s) his doom,"
as he starts to he meticulously plan the famous play within a play scene to expose Claudius. (BOOK 1). Even though he had successfully affirmed
that Claudius had indeed killed Hamlet's father, the side effects of his faked insanity causes his life, as well as those around him, to crumble as well.
Hamlet's irrational behavior of thirsting for revenge causes those around him to die. When Polonius is stabbed by Hamlet because of Hamlet's insane
craving for revenge on Claudius, whom he thought he was stabbing, "Hamlet, acting blindly through impulse, slays the wrong one; the result is – guilt.

The Significance of Death and Sex to William Shakespeare
The Significance of Death and Sex to William Shakespeare
In this essay, I will consider Death and Sin in Shakespearean drama and I would like to look at three of Shakespeare's tragic plays: "Hamlet", "Othello"
and "King Lear".
Shakespeare uses many themes in all his play that attract audiences throughout history. The things he wrote about are as relevant now as they were in
his time. Death and Sin were issues that are always around. In his plays, Shakespeare could comment on these things and make audiences see things
that they could not before.
In Hamlet, we can see clear examples of Death and Sin as significant to Shakespearean drama.
The first thing that points to both death and sin is the inclusion of a ghost in the play. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Claudius is the cause of a death and therefore also the committer of a sin, and having committed incest, he is guilty of two sins. The cause of the

the audience know everything about, giving cause for them to hate him, and Claudius is "Hamlets" hated Character.
Religion in the 16th Century was still a prominent issue. Religion had changed from Catholicism to Christianity, depending on which monarch was on
the throne at the time. People were expected to change religion depending on what their monarch said or face being an outcast. In Elizabeth's reign, the
religion changed from Catholicism to Protestantism. Being unsure of religions myself, the definition in the Collins pocket dictionary is as follows:
"Protestant: n 1 follower of any of the Christian churches that split from the Roman Catholic Church in the sixteenth century. Adj 2 of or relating to
such a church. Protestantism n"
In the Ten Commandments, written for the Christian faith, there are some elements that must be followed that are also relevant to Shakespeare's writing:
"Honour thy father and thy mother. Then you will live a long time in the land."
"You must not murder anyone."
"You must not be guilty of adultery."

Many themes are explored however the theme of love and death is far the most prominent throughout William Shakespeare's best known play, Romeo
and Juliet. The theme is explored through the language techniques Shakespeare used, for instance the oxymoron's and motifs, and the characterisation,
being the characters Paris and Capulet. Oxymoron's are two unlike things being compared, for instance jumbo shrimp or in act 2 scene 2 Juliet's line
'Good night, good night! Parting is such a sweet sorrow'. Shakespeare used oxymoron's to express turmoil in a character; he used the technique most
in act 3 scene 2 where Juliet finds out that Romeo killed Tybalt, she cries 'a damned saint, an honourable villain' among others in her exchange with the

The Death Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare
Death is the Key
One rotten apple spoils the whole barrel. This saying means that one awful person or event can infect others and cause them to change also. This can
be seen in Hamlet, when King Hamlet dies in the beginning of the play. Hamlet, like any other Shakespearean tradgedy, contains a series betrayal and
death. Hamlet seeks revenge when his deceased father's ghost tells him that his uncle, Claudius, murdered him. Since Hamlet's grief for his father was
expressed more than any other character, the strong bond between Hamlet and his father is clearly seen. Along the way, death finds other characters
and corruption follows. Throughout Hamlet, death becomes a catalyst to the corruption of sane characters, but death is also necessary for the
elimination of all the corrupt souls for the sake of Denmark.
Not only does Hamlet's dead father's mission for him affect Hamlet's mindset but his corrupt state affects Ophelia's fate. In act 1, Hamlet mourns
over his father's death in the beginning of the play, but when the ghost of his father appears, his mourning soon changes into a desire for revenge for
his father. With his mindset on avenging his father's death, Hamlet easily falls into a state of doubt within himself and others. It can be seen when
Hamlet says to himself, "[...] The spirit that I have seen May be the devil, and the devil hath power, T ' assume a pleasing shape; yea, and perhaps,
Out of my weakness and my melancholy, As he is very potent with such spirits,

The Slew of Death Caused by Romeo in Romeo and Juliet by...
In William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, many characters meet their tragic end as a result of a plethora of factors, from old rivalries to new love.
It is a tragic story of two lovers, destined to complete each other, but also to end a bitter feud through their deaths (Prologue.3–6). However, if the
blame had to be ascribed to one person in particular, that person would be Romeo Montague. Throughout the play, Shakespeare showcases Romeo's
irrationality and poor decision making, leading to the gruesome deaths of his loved ones. Romeo is most to blame for the tragic slew of deaths
because he is oblivious, quick to act, and too urgent in his relationship. Throughout the play, Romeo repeatedly ignores what is completely obvious. In
the beginning, he refuses to accept that there are more girls in the world than just Rosaline. This is showcased when Benvolio tells him about how
there are going to be many girls at the Capulet party, but Romeo ignores him (I.ii.4–9). This behavior shows that he is blinded by love, impairing his
logic. This behavior escalates when he fails to see how dangerous it might be to be involved with a Capulet as a Montague, brought front and center
when he goes to Juliet's balcony knowing that she is a Capulet. If Romeo had chosen the obvious choice of staying away, then their relationship would
have ended right there and then, saving both Juliet's life as well as his own. Romeo's ignorance climaxes in his final moments, when he finds Juliet's

Shakespeare's Hamlet Explores Death

  • 1. The Mystery Of Death By William Shakespeare Katsuki Clevenger Mrs. Pietrzak English 11 16 October 2014 The Mystery of Death William Shakespeare, the writer of Hamlet and many other well known plays, begins quickly define the weight of his death. Revealing so much of the story in such a sort but clever way using symbolisms, imagery, and more . The rest of the soliloquy gives us much information on the play, and readers find themselves looking back at it periodically. Just this one Soliloquy expresses the developed thought of Hamlet very well: the mystery of death. his story with the most important speech. "Thus was I, sleeping, by a brother's hand Of life, of crown, of queen at once dispatched." (1.5.81–82) stated by the Ghost using a hyperbole to Using an art gallery full of literary element to help open up the story, such as metaphors to define his feelings. Even though the speech is made by the Ghost, the soliloquy is a good support to Hamlet's cause and actions. Shakespeare involves this often repeated speech in the beginning of the book, so the audience can see the play unfold from a certain perspective. The crowd gets to first hand understand the core of the story fully, and gets to watch the characters slowly come to knowledge of the murder of King Hamlet. Shakespeare does this by trapping Hamlet in a corner, by giving him no proof or evidence, just knowledge. Creating an environment where Hamlet knows of the murder but must bite his tongue as he has no proof to condemn Claudius. The Ghost's soliloquy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Death Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare Every action has an opposite and equal reaction. Many people believe in karma, the idea that personal actions dictate future endeavors, and do good deeds to ensure that they live a prosperous life. The logic is that if a person commits negative actions, negative events will happen to them. A prime example of this ideology is found in the play Hamlet. Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare, was composed in 1601 following the death of Shakespeare's son, Hamlet. The play focuses on the prince of Denmark, Hamlet, as he discovers the truth about his father 's death and the events that follow. Shortly after the death of Hamlet's father,Gertrude, Hamlet's mother, marries Hamlet's uncle, Claudius. Hamlet does not agree with the marriage of his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To expand, Laertes responds to Hamlet by explaining, " in my terms of honor/ I stand aloof; and will no reconcilement/ Till by some elder masters, of known honor,/ I have a voice and precedent of peace/ To keep my name ungored."(247–251). Laertes's tone is nothing of acceptance and disregards Hamlet's apology. Laertes tells Hamlet that until a master or honor explains to him how to forgive Hamlet without tarnishing his name; he will not. Laertes does not express forgiveness and plans to revenge the death of his father, which leads to his own death. If Laertes moves past the murder of Polonius and does not plan to murder Hamlet, he would not parish. The inability of Laertes to forgive and attempt to understand Hamlet's apology subsequently affect Laertes in the end. The idea that forgiveness and love produce positive karma while ignorance and hatred create bad karma shines through during this scene. Ultimately, the negative actions of Laertes end in his downfall. The hostile and unforgiving tone of Laertes foreshadows the deaths of himself, Hamlet, Claudius, and Gertrude that soon follow. Both Hamlet and Laertes can prevent their deaths, but because of their negative actions, the equal and opposite reaction affects them and leads to their well deserved deaths. In addition to tone, irony highlights the idea of karma. While Laertes and Hamlet fence, they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Procrastination Of His Father's Death In Hamlet, By... Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, is a very complex play with many catechisms scholars study to this day. One such question relates to Hamlet's procrastination for vengeance of his father's death. Confronted by the ghost of his father, Hamlet is instructed to "revenge his foul and most unnatural murder" (Shakespeare I.v.31), yet he goes on to tarry the act for almost the entirety of the play. This brings about many ideas as to why he took such delay and the effect it had on the characters involved and the play itself as a whole. Hamlet had promised the ghost "that [he], with wings as swift/ as meditation or the thoughts of love/ may sweep to [his] revenge" (Shakespeare I.v.35–7). This, to an unfamiliar reader, would seem very straightforward, yet Hamlet speaks with no cause. He procrastinates so much that, later in the play, the ghost reappears to remind him to "not forget. This visitation / Is but to whet thy almost blunted purpose" (Shakespeare III.iv.136–7). His father literally comes back as a ghost to remind Hamlet that he is supposed to be seeking revenge. Hamlet seems so uninterested in the idea of actually going through with avenging his father's death; rather, he dwells on it and falls into depression, not acting on his anger or instruction whatsoever. Hamlet himself does not recognize a reason for his dally. He is extremely upset by his inability to enact vengeance. It deeply upsets him that an actor "in a dream of passion... should weep" (Shakespeare II.ii.579–87) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Death Of William Shakespeare 's ' The Great Gatsby ' Rex had no idea how to break it to them. He didn't have to tell them what he was going to choose, but he was supposed to. Everyone was supposed to at least give a clue as to what they were going to do. He decided not to, because he didn't want them to try to stop him He knew being a protecter was dangerous work, with a high fatality rate, higher than any other career. He'd known that even before last April when Edmund, an older teenager he'd actually known and talked to a few times, came back from his work as a protector in a coffin. That had certainly dampened his enthusiasm to become a protector. Protectors were always romanticised. They were heroes, they protected the nation from everything outside of it. Rex had always looked up to them in admiration, ever since he was young. Then when he knew about the high death rate, he looked at them with even more reverence. They risked their lives for the good of everyone. He found himself still wanting to be part of that, even after some of the fear had set in. He wanted to defend the people. He wanted to keep people safe, especially his family, especially the people who lived in his household. They didn't know yet. Sure, his mother, Svetla, and his grandmother, Harriet, always knew about how much he had admired the protectors, from how he went on about them when he was younger. His mother had warned him. His grandmother, a former protector herself, had encouraged him. She and his mother had both always supported him, but his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Death Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare Kristine Ross LIT 200 WY1 Professor Shepard 12/20/15 Paper #2 Troubled by royal treason, ruthless scheming, and a ghost, Denmark is on the verge of damage. Directly following King Hamlet 's death, the widowed Queen, Gertrude, remarried Claudius, the King 's brother. Prince Hamlet optically discerns the joining together of his mother and uncle as a "hasty and incestuous" act (Charles Boyce, 232). He then ascertains that Claudius is responsible for his father 's perfidious murder. His father 's ghost asks Hamlet to avenge his death and Hamlet concurs. He plans very punctiliously, ascertaining that he doesn 't kill Claudius when in he has already been forgiven for his sins. Hamlet fortuitously kills Polonius, the King 's advisor, contemplating that it was Claudius hiding behind a curtain spying on Hamlet and his mother. This drives Ophelia, Polonius ' daughter and Hamlet 's love interest, out of her mind. She then drowns in a suspected suicide when she falls from a tree into a river. Laertes, Ophelia 's brother, teams up with Claudius and plots revenge on the strained prince. Hamlet agrees to a sword match with Laertes, not realizing that Laertes will have a sharp, poisoned sword, while he will be given a blunted sword. • 6. How Does Shakespeare Present Horatio's Death In Hamlet "Now cracks a noble heart. Good–night, sweet prince; And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest," (Act V, scene II, lines 397 –399.) Horatio, the prince Hamlet's best friend in Shakespeare's Hamlet, spoke this to Hamlet moments after his tragic death. Hamlet itself is a tragic play that takes place in Denmark. The play opens with the ghost of the former King of Denmark telling his son, Hamlet, how Claudius, King Hamlet's brother, killed him and how Hamlet must now kill Claudius, who married Gertrude, King Hamlet's former wife, and took the throne. Throughout the middle section of the play, Hamlet attempts to indict and murder Claudius through various ways. On one occasion, he is called to Gertrude's room, where Polonius, Claudius' advisor, waits behind a facade to collect information about Hamlet's apparent madness. Hamlet mistakes Polonius for Claudius and kills Polonius, setting the final portion of the play in action. As a result of Polonius' murder, Claudius sends Hamlet to England to be killed, but manages to make his way back to Denmark to see his former love interest buried at her funeral due to the fact that she was Polonius' daughter and could not deal with the trauma of his death. Laertes, Polonius' son, and Claudius hatch a plan to kill Hamlet with a poisoned foil tip and a poisoned beverage because they want revenge for Hamlet's actions. The plan fails when Gertrude drinks the poison herself and dies. Laertes then scratches Hamlet with the poisoned tip, while ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Death Of Macbeth By William Shakespeare After the crowing of the new king, sickness begins to infiltrate throughout the land. What was once a healthy and strong nation suddenly becomes stricken with terror and misfortunes. Macbeth portrays sickness throughout the play, infecting everyone who he comes in contact with. On the other hand Edward, the king of England, preserves and strengthens those who come to seek asylum within his kingdom. Shakespeare uses the imagery of sickness versus health to reveal the effects of evil through Macbeth and the effects of health through Edward, in his tragic play, Macbeth. The country is slowing increasing in sickness fueled by the actions of Macbeth. Those who are still in the land describe it as, "...free from our feasts and banquets bloody knives, do faithful homage and relieve free honors all which we pine for now..." (3.6.35–37). Lady Macduff knows of all this but continues to reside in the sickened land saying, "To leave his wife, to leave his babes, his mansion, and his titles in a place, from whence himself does fly?...So runs against all reason"(4.2.6–8,13).She became a part of this saddened land and holds her possessions as more important than her own life and the lives of her children. Considering the sickness that surrounds her, she ends up defenseless when murders come to kill her. All she reverberates is, " I have done no harm...accounted dangerous folly. Why then alas do I put up that womanly defense..." (4.2.72,74–75). Since she has no knowledge of what to do she dies. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Motif Of Suicide And Death In Hamlet By William... In Hamlet's first soliloquy, he reflects upon the major motif of suicide and death while speaking to himself. Hamlet's father has just been murdered and his mother has now married Hamlet's uncle who is the new king. This makes Hamlet contemplate suicide by saying, "Or that the Everlasting had not fix'd his canon 'gainst self–slaughter! O God! O God!"(Shakespeare I.II.131–132) The phrase "the Everlasting had not fix'd his canon 'gainst self–slaughter" connotes that Hamlet is mad that there are rules against suicide or "self–slaughter" which demonstrates how the motif of death and suicide are shown. By "Everlasting", shakespeare is talking about how God has made these rules of suicide so they must not be broken. Repetition of the "!" and "O God" shows how angry and emotional he really is about the death of his father and thoughts of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hamlet continues to think about suicide when he says, "How weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable seem to me all the uses of this world!"(Shakespeare I.II.133–134) All of the words "weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable" have negative connotations. Hamlet uses these words to express how he thinks this is how his life if, showing how he thinks his life is pointless. Hamlet says "unprofitable seem to me all the uses of this world!" which denotes that everything in the world is aimless, this results in even more thoughts about suicide and death. Also the use of the "!" again, displays how strongly he feels about these suicidal thoughts. It is in the very beginning of the play that Hamlet voices his opinion that death would be a peaceful release. But as the play progresses his attitude begins to slowly doubt the serenity in death. Hamlet had been surrounded by death but had yet to come face to face with it, escaping the lessons the world was trying to teach him. It is within Act 5 scene 1 that Hamlet has a direct confrontation with death, manifested primarily through the discovery of Yorick's skull, a dear friend from his green world childhood. It is not until Hamlet stumbles upon another grave in which he finds a particular skull belonging to Yorick, the king's jester whom Hamlet admired. He described him as a "fellow of infinite jest and of most excellent fancy." The skull or Yorick is a symbol and physical reminder of the finality of death. He realizes his own mortality, and begins thinking of great leaders dying, saying "Alexander died, Alexander was buried, Alexander returned into dust; the dust is earth; of earth we make loam and why of that loam, whereto he was converted, might they not stop at a beer–barrel?" He continues, thinking of other great men, imagining the dust from Julius Caesar being used to "patch a wall". In Shakespeare's great tragedy, Hamlet loses his innocence and ignorance to the reality and finality of death by witnessing the powerlessness of the person once they have ... Hamlet decides that the only reason that people choose to live is because of their fear of what they will find in the afterlife. Hamlet's feeling of betrayal from his mother, Queen Gertrude, and his uncle, Claudius is what sparked the main cause of his actions. As he says, "So long? Nay then, let the devil wear black, for I'll have a suit of sables. O heavens! Die two months ago and not forgotten yet" (3.2.117–119). • 17. William Shakespeare 's ' The Death Of Claudius ' No surprise, this final Act of Hamlet is as mysterious, ambiguous, and controversial as those that precede it. The play begins rather straightforwardly, if ironically, as a revenge tragedy – Old Hamlet's ghost spurs his son to revenge – and it would seem that Act Five, like the Act Fives of all major revenge tragedies preceding Hamlet, should fulfill this initial plotline. Indeed, in Act Five Hamlet kills Claudius – finally. But he does so in such a roundabout, half–cocked, off–hand way, we wonder whether this really counts as revenge. The death of Claudius certainly lacks the poetic justice that vengeance seems to require. What on earth is Shakespeare trying to do with this strange play – why doesn't he give it a proper ending? Many of the earliest extant critics of the play, those of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, found the strange and abrupt manner of Hamlet's revenge to be as puzzling as we might. These critics often found fault with the play's lack of moral meaning. After all, if Claudius was wrong to kill his brother and marry his brother's wife (and surely he was), shouldn't the lethal correction of these crimes feel more satisfying, more "right," than it does in this play? Samuel Johnson, writing in 1765, voices critical dissatisfaction quite clearly: "The poet is accused of having shown little regard to poetical justice, and may be charged with equal neglect of poetical probability. A flower can resemble Ophelia's character; for even the most beautiful flower can be deceiving, and this is first seen in her character as a calm, delicate, and a controlled young lady (1.3.45–51 & 136). Once her father passes away and Hamlet is out of reach her state of being becomes confused, ill, insane and bitter (4.5.46–64). Ophelia starts wearing flowers like rosemary which is to be worn in memory (4.5.173). It is evident by the course of events that Ophelia commits suicide and her demise results from her own actions. • 19. Shakespeare 's Hamlet Throughout 'Hamlet' we have the images of death, decay, rottenness, and corruption embedded in the story. The imagery that Shakespeare uses in hamlet relates directly with the plots of the play perfectly. The corruptions images are illuminated in the beginning with Claudius own actions. The characters use metaphors of disease in the connection to sickness and rottenness. Within "Hamlet", Shakespeare makes a number of references to Denmark 's tainted state due to the deceitfulness that lies within. Shakespeare uses death and decay to exemplify the death of the characters, and the decay of these characters that comes with those deaths, as well as the decay and death of morals and the death and decay that comes of political corruption of the government of Denmark. Denmark is repeatedly defined as a physical body made ill by the moral corruption of Claudius. They don 't know that Claudius isn 't legitimate throughout the play; characters draw clear links between the moral lawfulness of a ruler and the health of the nation. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern state their beliefs that health of a country is tied to the legitimacy of the King. Because death and decay are so prevalent throughout Hamlet, it could be said that Shakespeare intended for them to be a major theme. • 20. The Death Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare Imagery is an integral part of literature. The protagonist, Hamlet, his mother Queen Gertrude and her husband King Claudius, along with Hamlet's love interest Ophelia are all affected by human sin through the evocation of sickness and rot. Sin, the driving force of the play, impacts each character, decaying his or her mind, resulting in the emotional and physical demise of each character and the decay of the state of Denmark, which has become "rotten" after Claudius poisons his own brother and weds his sister–in–law. William Shakespeare's tragic playHamlet has explicit imagery evoking sickness, death, and decay. The use of death, rot, and sickness as images illustrate the sinful human nature of the characters and the corruption of Denmark. Death as an image in Hamlet is used to present both the effects of sinning on Hamlet and Denmark's corruption. In the opening act, Hamlet speaks to Claudius and Gertrude regarding his melancholy attitude due to his father's murder (which was committed by Claudius); when the King and Queen leave, Hamlet says in an aside that he wishes that God had not made suicide a sin. During his speech, Hamlet says that he wishes his "too sullied flesh would melt" meaning he wishes he could kill himself to get rid of his depression (1.2.133–134). This imagery of melting flesh is a representation of death that shows Hamlet's pain. Hamlet wonders how someone who once meant so much in life could be so easily forgotten to rot in the ground after their death "–Where be your gibes now, your gambols, your songs, your flashes of merriment that were wont to set the table on a roar?"( A5 S1 L173–174). On the other hand, one may argue that when someone or something dies their spirit and soul remains alive. William Shakespeare is a well–known poet who wrote many poems about love and death in his time. To be exact Shakespeare perished four hundred and thirteen years ago in year 1603; however, the real question should be ¬¬¬did Shakespeare really die? Did Shakespeare try to cheat death with his writing? He may have died about four hundred years ago, but his poetry is very much alive in the world today. Death is imminent; on the contrary, did William Shakespeare intend to cheat death with his writing that has been very much alive since first written. For example, the couplet in Sonnet 65 reads, "O, none, unless this miracle have might, That in black ink my love may still shine bright." Throughout Sonnet 65, Shakespeare mentions death and how nothing can escape it. Not metal, not rock, not dirt, not water, not beauty, not anything. It will all end with time. Suicide is not an uncommon subject of paintings, or any of the arts for that matter. On the contrary, suicide can be glorified to a certain extent, in the way that a novel or film can romanticize the act without the brutality or consequences being addressed. Suicide can appear heroic in the face of a evil. It can appear to be a triumphant escape from a cruel world. Through two film depictions of the play, one directed by Kenneth Branagh and one starring Mel Gibson, we can see Gertrude being portrayed in that of a woman doing what she must and that of a promiscuous woman who is selfish. She might therefore have suspected him to be capable of murder in order to obtain her and the crown (which a marriage to her would assure him), but she has no such suspicions" (194). In Branagh's version, Gertrude plays the innocent role described by Smith much more so than that of the Gertrude of the film starring Gibson. While Branagh's Gertrude seems to play the part of a happy wife, she also looks as if all her words and actions towards Claudius are forced, but her look upon Hamlet seems to be that of unconditional love. While both film versions depict Hamlet's character well, Gertrude's is not. Such as in Hamlet when Gertrude is met by Hamlet in her room and he begins discussing the way of his father's death. Gertrude is portrayed as more of a lady with questionable morals when she kisses Mel Gibson in such a way a woman kisses her husband, which is not acted out in Branagh's version. In this scene, Hamlet says: Look here, upon this picture, and on this, The counterfeit presentment of two brothers. See, what a grace was seated on this brow; Hyperion 's curls; the front of Jove himself; An eye like Mars, to threaten and command; A station like the herald Mercury New–lighted on a heaven–kissing hill; A combination and a form indeed, Where every god did seem to set his seal, To give the world assurance of a man: This was your husband. • 31. The Death Of Romeo And Juliet By William Shakespeare Who is to Blame? Good Morning, members of the Jury. While it may be a popular belief that there has 'never been a tale of more woe than that of Romeo and Juliet', the facts are less subjective. Many say that love brings peace and affection, but when taken to the extreme, it can lead to tragedy and despair. This is shown evidently in the play Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare. Arguably the most famous love story of all time, the play tells the tale of a boy and a girl from opposing families who meet and fall in love and after being married for 3 days, they choose to kill themselves, rather than live without each other. It is difficult to place the blame entirely on just one person for the death of Romeo and Juliet, because there were several aspects that played a part in their death and because their lives had been controlled, criticized, pressured and influenced by many people. However, the people who would be most influential in the death of the 'star–cross'd lovers' would without a doubt have to be the parents of Romeo and Juliet, Lord and Lady Capulet and Lord and Lady Montague. The first reason that the parents are to blame is because of the eternal feud between the Montagues and Capulets which prohibits the love of Romeo and Juliet and ultimately results in their unfortunate deaths. Secondly, Lord and Lady Capulet decided, pressurised and forcefully tried to get Juliet married to Paris, causing Juliet making rash decisions and eventually resulting in their ... • 33. How Does Shakespeare Present Death In Hamlet William Shakespeare's Hamlet is a revenge tragedy full of the looming of death. Prince Hamlet, solely living to avenge his late father's death, seemingly goes mad in the process. The reader not only gets in the mind of the grieving prince, but is also let in on the multiple treacherous and murderous plans of practically every character. In this light, we are brought on a journey of what death symbolizes. Throughout the play, Shakespeare depicts death as impending, complex, and even frivolous. Death is introduced in the play from the beginning. Shakespeare shows how complex death is by simply using a ghost; it confuses the characters. Not one left to mock at your own grinning? Down–in–the–mouth, are you?" (271) Shakespeare goes even further to depict death as a joke by killing off all major characters in glib methods. Hamlet accidentally kills Polonius, Ophelia drowns, Gertrude drinks poison Claudius intended for Hamlet, Laertes cuts himself by his own sword, Claudius is then poisoned and Hamlet dies right after getting revenge. Throughout Hamlet, Shakespeare hones in on what death truly is. He illustrates it's nearness, it's complications, and it's facetiousness in a manner that is his own. Shakespeare brings about many questions of death through his characters, especially in the pervasive and philosophical Hamlet. Anybody could be blamed, people in the present, and our ancestors for raising their kin the way they did. You could put the blame on the person who did something horrible, or you could blame people who influenced, said person. Throughout the play, Hamlet is obsessed with the idea of death due to his determination for vengeance for his father and death seems to follow wherever he goes, and his, "pursuit of an essentially immoral act of revenge killing...may result in his eternal damnation" (BOOK 2). Shakespeare uses the motif of death to show how if one obsesses over an idea it can eventually cause the corruption of the environment around him. The motif of death in Hamlet is used early on in the play when the ghost of Hamlet's father appears. His friends warned him about how listening to the ghost could be a bad idea, most likely due to the fact that ghosts were seen as bad omens. With the ghost initiating Hamlet's curiosity in how his father died, the unhealthy interest in the death of his father, "prove(s)dangerous to him, and his genius...(to exaggerate a little) become(s) his doom," as he starts to he meticulously plan the famous play within a play scene to expose Claudius. (BOOK 1). Even though he had successfully affirmed that Claudius had indeed killed Hamlet's father, the side effects of his faked insanity causes his life, as well as those around him, to crumble as well. Hamlet's irrational behavior of thirsting for revenge causes those around him to die. • 37. The Significance of Death and Sex to William Shakespeare The Significance of Death and Sex to William Shakespeare In this essay, I will consider Death and Sin in Shakespearean drama and I would like to look at three of Shakespeare's tragic plays: "Hamlet", "Othello" and "King Lear". Shakespeare uses many themes in all his play that attract audiences throughout history. The things he wrote about are as relevant now as they were in his time. Death and Sin were issues that are always around. In his plays, Shakespeare could comment on these things and make audiences see things that they could not before. In Hamlet, we can see clear examples of Death and Sin as significant to Shakespearean drama. The first thing that points to both death and sin is the inclusion of a ghost in the play. ... The cause of the revelations on Claudius' character as revealed by the ghost make him a hated character in the play by the audience. There is normally a character that the audience know everything about, giving cause for them to hate him, and Claudius is "Hamlets" hated Character. Religion in the 16th Century was still a prominent issue. Religion had changed from Catholicism to Christianity, depending on which monarch was on the throne at the time. People were expected to change religion depending on what their monarch said or face being an outcast. In Elizabeth's reign, the religion changed from Catholicism to Protestantism. Being unsure of religions myself, the definition in the Collins pocket dictionary is as follows: "Protestant: n 1 follower of any of the Christian churches that split from the Roman Catholic Church in the sixteenth century. Adj 2 of or relating to such a church. Protestantism n" In the Ten Commandments, written for the Christian faith, there are some elements that must be followed that are also relevant to Shakespeare's writing: "Honour thy father and thy mother. Then you will live a long time in the land." "You must not murder anyone." "You must not be guilty of adultery." "You must not want to take your neighbours house. You must not want his

  • 39. How Does Shakespeare Present Death In Romeo And Juliet Many themes are explored however the theme of love and death is far the most prominent throughout William Shakespeare's best known play, Romeo and Juliet. The theme is explored through the language techniques Shakespeare used, for instance the oxymoron's and motifs, and the characterisation, being the characters Paris and Capulet. Oxymoron's are two unlike things being compared, for instance jumbo shrimp or in act 2 scene 2 Juliet's line 'Good night, good night! Parting is such a sweet sorrow'. Shakespeare used oxymoron's to express turmoil in a character; he used the technique most in act 3 scene 2 where Juliet finds out that Romeo killed Tybalt, she cries 'a damned saint, an honourable villain' among others in her exchange with the nurse. Shakespeare used this technique as it shows the main paradox in the play, that love came from hate, he does to foreshadow the ultimate death of the lovers as the happiness in the start of the play is unlike the sadness in the second half, it's bittersweet.... • 40. The Death Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare Death is the Key One rotten apple spoils the whole barrel. This saying means that one awful person or event can infect others and cause them to change also. This can be seen in Hamlet, when King Hamlet dies in the beginning of the play. Hamlet, like any other Shakespearean tradgedy, contains a series betrayal and death. Hamlet seeks revenge when his deceased father's ghost tells him that his uncle, Claudius, murdered him. Since Hamlet's grief for his father was expressed more than any other character, the strong bond between Hamlet and his father is clearly seen. Along the way, death finds other characters and corruption follows. Throughout Hamlet, death becomes a catalyst to the corruption of sane characters, but death is also necessary for the elimination of all the corrupt souls for the sake of Denmark. Not only does Hamlet's dead father's mission for him affect Hamlet's mindset but his corrupt state affects Ophelia's fate. In act 1, Hamlet mourns over his father's death in the beginning of the play, but when the ghost of his father appears, his mourning soon changes into a desire for revenge for his father. With his mindset on avenging his father's death, Hamlet easily falls into a state of doubt within himself and others. It can be seen when Hamlet says to himself, "[...] The spirit that I have seen May be the devil, and the devil hath power, T ' assume a pleasing shape; yea, and perhaps, Out of my weakness and my melancholy, As he is very potent with such spirits, ... • 41. However, if the blame had to be ascribed to one person in particular, that person would be Romeo Montague. Throughout the play, Shakespeare showcases Romeo's irrationality and poor decision making, leading to the gruesome deaths of his loved ones. Romeo is most to blame for the tragic slew of deaths because he is oblivious, quick to act, and too urgent in his relationship. Throughout the play, Romeo repeatedly ignores what is completely obvious. In the beginning, he refuses to accept that there are more girls in the world than just Rosaline. This is showcased when Benvolio tells him about how there are going to be many girls at the Capulet party, but Romeo ignores him (I.ii.4–9). This behavior shows that he is blinded by love, impairing his logic. This behavior escalates when he fails to see how dangerous it might be to be involved with a Capulet as a Montague, brought front and center when he goes to Juliet's balcony knowing that she is a Capulet. If Romeo had chosen the obvious choice of staying away, then their relationship would have ended right there and then, saving both Juliet's life as well as his own. Romeo's ignorance climaxes in his final moments, when he finds Juliet's supposedly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
